FROM THE EDITOR Tawana Blassingame Founder & Editor in Chief

Welcome to the May 2016 issue of Queen Size Magazine. I was so excited about putting this issue together; I know I say that a lot. LOL. But I am so very passionate about what we do for you all. In honor of Mother’s Day; in this issue we decided to highlight some fierce mother/daughter modeling teams. In this issue you will also find a recap on the NY Full Figured Fashion Week Casting. In addition to the recap, you will also get some tips on how and when you should prepare yourself for the casting. Make sure you also check out the editor’s article on the things that models expect photographers to photoshop. HA! You are either going to love or hate me for that one. Our beauty editor also exposed some beauty myths; these are going to surprise you. Now you see why I had some much fun with this issue, because it is packed with some great articles that are helpful to all of us no matter what corner of the fashion industry you are in. Pick up your copy and tell us what you think. Thank you all who continue to support me and the Queen Size brand.

A Queen’s Diet for Longevity

by Darshi N. Shah Nutritional Therapist & Health Coach

Life is good for all of us royal readers! And when life is good, we all want more; so how does one get longevity, or a longer than average lifespan? Why do some live longer than others? The longest living woman resides in Japan. She just celebrated her 115th birthday. What secrets could she share with us? There have been many studies on this fascinating subject. Is it environmental? It is nutritionbased? Or is it genetic coding? The latest thoughts on the subject are that longevity can be influenced by genetics (10%), environment (50%), and diet & exercise (40%). What this means is that although we can’t control our genes, it can’t determine our fates either. The things we can control have a greater say in our longevity. In addition to diet, other controllable factors include our choices of smoking/alcohol, residence location, stress, radiation, socio-economic status, education, occupation, beauty & cosmetic products, BMI, physical activity, medications, and intra-uterine conditions. In this article we are going to investigate a NUTRITIONAL strategy that many centenarians share that scientists agree adds to longevity. G-Bombs. This is the powerful acronym used to detail out the food types we should strive to eat more varieties from. G-Bombs stand for Greens, Beans, Onions, Mushrooms, Berries, and Seeds.

GREENS are no surprise on this list as there are so many phytonutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals in our plant-based

nutrition. Also there are so many varieties and tastes to accommodate even the selective eaters. Add some kale or spinach to your meal today!

BEANS are a term used to describe all plant-based proteins, including dals, legumes, pulses, and peas. They are the tiny seeds of life to a plant, and consist of good proteins. Red lentils are my favorite.

ONIONS are protective alliums, and when combined with garlic become ideal remedies for cold and flu infections. People who consume onions and garlic regularly can have up to 56% reduction in their risk of colorectal cancers.

MUSHROOMS are a category of fungus with many different varieties, shapes, sizes, and flavors. They are shown to be potent

anti-cancer nutrition as women that regularly eat mushrooms have a 64% reduction with risk of breast cancer. Think about that the next time you grill a Portobello!

BERRIES are powerful antioxidants which protect the body from cells going rogue, not to mention a great source of vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients. They also boost brain function and immunity. My smoothie is not complete without a handful of colorful berries.

SEEDS are the last category which include tasty complementary proteins and fats when combined with other plant-based foods. Seeds have great omega fatty acids which satisfy and complete proteins that aid in immune protection. I enjoy eating pumpkin seeds in cereals, salads, and even smoothies.

When G-Bombs are consciously consumed in a regular diet, one’s immune system becomes stronger and better protects against ailments. So the next time you are choosing what to eat, think G-Bombs for your health! Other things that can help …Don’t smoke, eat more plants, reduce meat consumption, exercise, avoid prolonged and direct exposure to sunlight, and limit alcohol. For customized guidance and health support, visit www.darshishah.com and schedule a nutritional breakthrough consult.

QUEEN SIZE MAGAZINE PRESENTS

“To Answer Your Question” By SHIRLEY BEALE

MR. RIGHT OR MR. WRONG Question: Hello Shirley. I met a man who (on paper) seems to be Mr. Right. He’s divorced, no kids, has his own place and has a Phd. When we met, he lived nearby. He recently accepted a prestigious position at a college in another state about four to five hours away. Thus, the relationship will be long distance. He opens doors, takes me to nice restaurants and we have nice quiet evenings at home as well. He’s three years older, financially secure and has the height I love; over six feet tall. The problem is he doesn’t have a clue how to be there for me on an emotional level. Recently I’ve experienced some health issues and when I bring it up he listens attentively but has no response. Whenever I’ve criticized him, he says he’ll try to do better. We’ve dated three months and while I appreciate us taking time to know each other, the sexual tension has been intense. Well, when approaching the subject, I discover there is an “issue” with him. I still have a sexual appetite which makes this problematic. So I guess my question is: Is this relationship worth pursuing?

SHIRLEY’S RESPONSE: I think the relationship is worth pursuing. He has all the great qualities one would look for in a mate. Where he is lacking, it appears to be in areas that can be improved. For instance, he accepted a prestigious position in another state but if it’s only four to five hours away, the two of you can meet half way and have romantic weekend getaways. Or you can take turns driving or flying to each other each weekend. Depending on how deep your commitment is, I say you should give it more time. The only person that can teach someone how you want to be treated is you. Depending on his upbringing, family history or bad experience, maybe he does not know how to be emotionally supportive. Talk to him about it; s how him what it means to be in a partnership of a loving relationship. As far as his “issue” regarding sex, if it’s a size issue, that can be fixed. In today’s society, what you aren’t born with, you can purchase or have implanted. If it’s a technique issue, teach, tell and enjoy (if he’s a willing student). According to you, he has a lot of great qualities you love. Build on those, improve the areas that need and the result will be the total package, designed by you exactly the way you want and need it to be. Hope this helps.

MANAGEMENT WITH POOR COMMUNICATION SKILLS Question: Hi Shirley. Why do people in management have poor communication skills with employees but have good communication skills with customers. Employees spend more money than customers on everything do but customers get more respect than employees. Customer service skills with employees is an F. Customer service skills with customers is an A+.

SHIRLEY’S RESPONSE: Not everyone in management has the proper communication skills. The same holds true for anyone, management or not. The best thing to do is to be the best YOU can be. Hopefully your communication skills will be noticed and you will be promoted to management and be a role model for those who may lack in the communication area. Don’t be frustrated. Just continue to be your own STAR and let your own light shine.

KEEPING ME A SECRET FROM THE KIDS Question: My Significant Other won’t introduce me to his kids. We’ve been dating for about three years. When we were a year and a half into the relationship, I met one of the kids because I forced the issue and showed up at the house on one of his weekend visits. His son knew nothing about me. I haven’t seen him since despite my request for all of us to do dinner or a movie or anything so he can get to know me. My man always says cool, good idea but never makes it happen. What do you read into this? Signed Ms. Maxine

SHIRLEY’S RESPONSE: Hello Ms. Maxine. It’s hard to see the big picture when you are in the portrait. Your guy appears to be hiding something; whether it’s his true feelings, another relationship or fear, he is clearly not being 100 with you. If he is serious about you, you clearly should have met the family and kids by now. If you are really serious about this guy, I would have a

heart-to-heart talk with him. Let him know AGAIN how important it is for you and the health of your relationship to meet his kids. I would ask how old the kids are but there are pros and cons to meeting the kids at any age. If they kids are young, they can adapt quite easily to dad or mom’s new relationship particularly if it is a person that is consistent; and 3 years is consistent. On the other hand, the young age of the kids can also result in them being easily persuaded to dislike the other party’s significant other. The same holds true for older kids. They are old enough to judge whether their parent’s “friend” is good or not but can also create a problem if they are jealous of the attention their parent is giving to this person. How did the visit go when you met the son? Was the son accepting of you? If he was and the two of you seemed to hit it off well, that is a great thing. How has your guy reacted since the meet? This is an important issue and it should be addressed now. You are three years into this relationship. If he is a good guy but has issues to work out, ask him to allow you to help him work it out. If he keeps blocking you out, you have to make the decision to deal with it or walk away. My belief is that you are too valuable to spend your time making someone a priority when they treat you like an option. To hang in there for three years demonstrates you have made him a priority for that amount of time. It SHOULD BE RECIPROCATED. You deserve that. I believe that you stuck it out this long because you love the man but you must love yourself more. If he doesn’t want to include you in the important things of his life, then exclude him from the important things of your life: Namely, You!!! Good luck, Ms. Maxine.

SEXY IS AGELESS Question: Shouldn’t a woman be able to feel sexy at any age?

SHIRLEY’S RESPONSE: Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes. Sexiness has no age. It is a state of mind, not the number of birthdays you’ve had. Each day, regardless of what is going on in your life, regardless of your situations and circumstances always do your best to dress, feel, smell and look like you’re a million dollars. When you look good, you feel good. Keep your personal grooming in check. It’s not how much you spend on your grooming but the care you take in making your grooming look good. Recite daily affirmations that speak into your spirit, soul and innermost thoughts. Don’t just tell yourself you are beautiful and sexy, BELIEVE that you are and will always be. I repeat my opening thought: Sexiness is a state of mind, not the number of birthdays you’ve had. Be Blessed.

WAYS THAT WOMEN CAN MAKE EXERCISING MORE FUN by Sarah Novello, Project Manager at Lose It! http://blog.loseit.com

2

PICK THE FUN STUFF FIRST No-one says you have to chain yourself to a treadmill – your exercises are your choices. Music your thing? Turn workouts into the time you listen to your favorite playlists. When you’re feeling stuck, browse through Lose It! exercises to get ideas (we even have kickball). Sign up for an event like Warrior Dash, Color Run, or even a regular 5k race – just make good of the study results by telling yourself it’s an adventure or fun-run so you don’t spoil your burn at your post-race brunch.

1

TRY THE NAME-CHANGE GAME Make a list of activities you like and those you dislike. For the ones you like, cross out the name and call it something that excites you. Cheesy as it sounds, “chasing the sunset” sounds way cooler than “going for a run.” Next time you’re hitting the gym, just tell yourself you’re going to “play, throw stuff, and climb on things” for an hour. Like video games? You can even call it “gaming hour.” Fitness trackers are great toys for turning exercise into a goal-oriented points system.

3

OWN IT My tip: I used to say “I HAVE to get up” for my morning yoga and cardio sessions. One day, I decided to call workouts MY hour, and to be grateful for the time to myself. With a flip of phrasing, getting up in the morning has become something I look forward to because I choose it. Claim your personal “happy hour”: take time for yourself each day to feel great and get fit at the same time.

4

MAKE IT SOCIAL Whether online or in person, working out with people can make it a motivating, fun, and rewarding time for you. People who are connected to friends on Lose It! lose more weight than those who aren’t, so join a group or challenge. Outside the internet, group fitness trends are aplenty and waiting for members near you. Attendees of November Project (NP), a national fitness movement that started in Boston, would be the last to dread their workouts. They’ve mastered the art of #1 above, naming daily workouts as #destinationdeck or #hillsforbreakfast, and hyping each other up on Twitter. With “NP tribes” in seventeen cities, you might even have a grassroots group nearby. Another awesome movement is Black Girls Run!, a community who travels together to complete races. Check out meetup.com for social fitness near you or to start a group of your own.

CONCEPT ONE _______________________________________________ Colors are fun to play with when styling your apparels, but you have to be careful not to go overboard with your colors. If you plan on wearing a multi-print outfit, it’s recommended that you stick with one solid color for your accessories. No colored jewelry!! Gold or silver would be just fine.

Summer Shopping is one of my favorites! Not that I don’t like shopping every fashion season, (for those that know me, would say that’s the biggest understatement of the year) but it’s the only time a year that the department stores carry bright colored clothing. I take full advantage of that. Photography | PDrew Photography Model/Stylist | Meesha Ann

CONCEPT TWO _______________________________________________ Mixing colors are risky, but that’s what fashion is about. You can get away with this if your base color is neutral. Try taking a black, grey and/or white outfit and adding a mixture of your favorite colors.

NATURAL BEAUTY MYTHS

BEHIND THE GLAM By CRYSTAL CARMEN

D E T S U B

IF YOU CAN’T PRONOUNCE IT, IT MUST BE BAD FOR YOU

THIS COULDN’T BE FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH. FIRST WE HAVE TO ACCOUNT FOR THOSE WHO MAY HAVE DIFFERENT READING ABILITIES. OF COURSE, WHEN THAT IS ACCOUNTED FOR, WE ALSO HAVE TO TAKE IN LITTLE KNOW FACT THAT NATURAL INGREDIENTS HAVE INCI (INTERNATIONAL NOMENCLATURE OF COSMETIC INGREDIENTS) NAMES THAT A FAIR SHARE OF PEOPLE COULDN’T GET ON A FIRST TRY IF THEY WANTED TO. LET’S TRY A MATCHING GAME WITH NATURAL INGREDIENTS, MATCH THE NATURAL PRODUCT TO IS INCI NAME. BETA VULGARIS

BUTYROSPERMUM PARKII EXTRACT

CITRUS MEDICA LIMONUM

SHEA BUTTER

LEMON

BEET POWDER

BY NOW YOU UNDERSTAND NATURAL DOESN’T MEAN THE NAME WON’T APPEAR FOREIGN TO YOU. THERE IS A STANDARD FOR COSMETIC INGREDIENT NAMES CREATED IN THE INCI. THESE INCI NAMES ARE LATIN BASED AND ALL SOUND WELL A BIT LIKE SPEAKING IN ANOTHER LANGUAGE BEFORE YOU’VE LEARNED IT.

TITANIUM DIOXIDE IS AWFUL

TITANIUM DIOXIDE CAN BE HARMFUL IF THE MICRONIZD VERSION POWDER FORM OF IT WERE LURKING IN YOUR LOOSE MINERAL MAKEUP. WHEN USED IN LIQUIDS SUCH AS FOUNDATION AND SUNCREENS THERE IS LITTLE TO NO CHANCE OF INHALATION. UNLESS OF COURSE YOU FIND A GOOD REASON TO PUT LOTION UP YOUR NOSE. VERY FEW BRANDS USE THIS ANYMORE DUE TO THE CONCERNS. CHECK YOUR PRODUCT LABELS OR CONTACT THE MANAFACTURER IF YOU CAN’T FIND IT ON THE JAR.

NATURAL SOAPS DON’T SUDS AS MUCH SO IT MUST NOT BE MAKING ME CLEAN

REAL NATURAL SOAP DOES NOT HAVE TO SUD TO BE EFFECTIVE THE DESIRE TO SEE SUDS IS PURELY A PHYSCOLOGICAL THING. AS HUMANS WE FEEL SATISFIEDL BY FEELING OR SEEING SOMETHING HAPPENING. BUBBLES OR SUDS ARE REALLY JUST SOAP MOLECULES TRAPPED AIR IN SPHERE SHAPPED POCKETS. TRAPPED AIR DOESN’T DO ANY CLEANING. THE SOAP MOLECULES IN THE WATER IS WHAT CREATES THE CLEANING EFFECT. IN FACT, BECAUSE OF THE PHYSOCLOGOCIAL FACTOR MANY COMMERCIAL AND SOAP MANUFACTURERS WILL ADDD SYNTHETIC CHEMICALS SPECIFICALLY TO GET A SUDSY APPEARANCE THROUGHOUT WASHING, SO THAT PEOPLE CAN FEEL SURE THEIR BODY IS BEING WASHED.

D E T S U B

IF IT’S ALL NATURAL, I CAN’T BE ALLERGIC TO IT

NATURAL DOES NOT MEAN FREE OF ALLERGENS. THE FACT IS THAT NATURAL PRODUCTS ARE LIKELY TO CONTAIN MORE ALLERGENS THEN COMMERICAL PRODUCTS. AVOCADO, SHEA BUTTER, ALMOND OIL ARE JUST SOME OF COMMON ALLERGENS FOUND IN NATURAL BEAUTY AND HAIR CARE PRODUCTS. I CREATED A HAIR STRAIGHTENING AND CURLING CREAM (HAIR WHIP). UNFORTUNATELY, AS PRETTY AS IT MAKES MY HAIR LOOK, I CANNOT USE IT. I HAVE A TOPICAL ALLERGY TO SHEA BUTTER. YES,. ALL NATURAL SHEA BUTTER. I WAS UNAWARE OF MY ALLERGY UNTIL I NOTICE THAT MY SYMPTOM OF PAINFUL BUMPS ON MY HAIRLINE AND JAWLINE APPEARED THE MOST WHEN I USED IT. I ALTERED THE RECIPE AND CREATED A VERSION WITHOUT SHEA BUTTER AND WAS ABLE TO USE IT PROBLEM FREE. WHEN SWITCHING PRODUCTS, TAKE NOTE OF ANY UNUSUAL CHANGES IN YOUR SKIN OR SCALP. N’bodi for You

This designer knows how to dress any women any size with her wide variety of clothing style. The word sexy, elegant, classy and unique are just a few words that come to mind when describing this beautiful line of clothes. Keisha Thompson’s work has been featured in several shows across North Carolina and even been featured in Curve Nation Expo 2015. What an honor and privilege to be able to interview with one of North Carolinas own. I introduce to you Ms. Keisha Thompson owner, and self taught designer of N’bodi Clothing!

Natalie: Tell the readers about yourself? Keisha: My name is Keisha Thompson originally I’m from a small city Wilson, NC, where I attended school, shortly after I moved to Virginia Beach, VA where I spent what seems an eternity there but now I currently reside in Raleigh, NC where I’ve been for nearly 5 years. I’m a Dominate Alpha female which to me simply means that I have a strong desire to succeed. I’m very outgoing with a bubbly personality to match. Natalie: How did N’Bodi come about? Keisha: Well after stumbling upon a niche, I first attempted to make myself a pair of gloves, next it was a skirt, then a dress, which quickly gravitated towards making items for my friends and now various clients so needless to say I’m a Self Taught Designer. N’Bodi was founded in June 2012, shortly after a previous joint venture buckled. I took part of the previous company’s name and added my own spin to it N’Bodi has been reaching new heights since then. Natalie: Amazing! Very inspiring an exciting. I am so glad you did not stop and continued despite your experience. What inspires you as a designer? Keisha: I would say everything and anything, Just last week I was in a nail bar and I was just thumbing through some pages of a nail art book and came across a unique nail design that I instantly feel in love with, I quickly sketched up 2 designs. Natalie: What is your best seller? Keisha: My best seller right now is my one piece romper with an oversized sleeve and crop pants. Natalie: What advice do you have for anyone who is an inspiring to be a designer?

Keisha: Do extensive research on the market that you’re going after, whether it’s size 0-8 or Plus sizes, keep in mind color, material and patterns should play a huge part in your decision making process. Then think outside of the box and be creative,” What makes your designs different from anyone else’s”? Natalie: Do you have any upcoming events for this year that you are interested in sharing with our readers? Keisha: April 23rd, Diva’s on Fire, being recognized as Fashion Designer of the Year, Raleigh, NC April 30th, Back to the Future Fashion Show, Raleigh, NC June 25th, New York Summer Fashion Explosion, Brooklyn, NY September 10th, Down East Awards, nominated for Fashion Designer of the Year, Wilson, NC Other dates TBA Natalie: So what’s next for the N’Bodi Brand? Keisha: I’ll be expounding my Couture Designs in hopes of landing on someone’s Red Carpet. Natalie: Do you have anything else you would like to share? Keisha: I give credit to my success to God, my parents and my two daughters who instilled strong morals, values and work ethics. Natalie: How can people connect with you or find you? Keisha: Facebook: Facebook.com/NBodi5 IG@ Nbodi1 Twitter: @ Nbodi1 www.Nbodi.net Thank you so much for your contribution to the fashion world! I am a true fan of N’bodi and look forward to seeing what the future had in store for you! Much Success to you and the N’bodi brand.

YOU CAN PHOTOSHOP THAT RIGHT? You are also taught the basic fundaments like how to pack a model bag. But there are many things that I have noticed on sets of photo shoots and backstage in the dressing rooms; things that seem so obvious but yet go unattended to. When you are modeling to sell an item, whether it is clothing, accessories, glasses, etc…. yes it is all about the product you are selling but at the same time you cannot forget about you. Yes people are looking at the product you are selling but understand that people are also very critical; they are looking at you too. When you clock in to work for that shoot or for that show, you have to be 100% on point; don’t’ skip steps because it will show in your images. In this brief article I am going to share with you the top eight things that as a model you should never leave unattended. Keep in mind that this is a judgment free zone so don’t try to come for me! SHAVE THOSE ARMPITS Posing takes a lot of movement and I don’t know many models that do all their posing with their hands down. Don’t you want to lift your hand up and run it through your hair during a shoot to give you that sultry seductive look? Of course you do! Let’s face it, many models turn that seductive switch on and give their photographers a show. I don’t mean that in a sleezy way, but you want to get loose and feel sexy during your shoot; it allows you the flexibility (literally) to do different poses other than the normal hands on hip and in the hair. Now speaking of which, how are you going to do those poses with unshaved underarms? Now granted if you are modeling a long sleeve top you would be able to get away with it. But doesn’t hairy armpits make you sweat? Anyway….. As models you should shave those armpits. If your religion forbids it then I respect it, but if you are just too lazy to do it then I can’t. WHITEN THOSE PEARLY WHITES As a model, showing your pearly whites are essential. No one ever co-signs on showing your yellow mellos. (SMH did I just way that?) We have been taught to brush our teeth twice a day and/or after meals, but if you are not using a good whitening toothpaste then you are going to need to invest in some care that can help in that area. Just because your teeth are clean does not mean that they are white. If you are a heavy coffee drinker, tea drinker, smoker, or eat foods that will stain your teeth then make appointments to see your dentist to keep your smiles bright and not dull. Just as an FYI, here some foods and drinks that are notorious for staining your teeth. Coffee, tea, berries, red wine, curry, beets, colored sodas, candies and juices. POLISH THOSE NAILS Unless you are a face or feet model, it is extremely difficult to keep your hands out of your photo shoot. This is the number one thing in my opinion that models tend to neglect. I am in no way shape or form suggesting that models need to pop on six inch acrylic nails with outlandish nail decorations and colors. But at the very least, you r nails should be groomed; evenly cut, clean and a coat of polish that won’t take away from the garment you are wearing. There is nothing worse than seeing dirty or chipped nails in a photo. Well maybe there are some things that are worse, but it’s still not good. The same rule applies to those toenails too ladies.

YOU CAN PHOTOSHOP THAT RIGHT | TAWANA BLASSINGAME

LOTION UP Do I even need to go here? Yup, I’m going. Lotion the whole body and not just the parts that you think people can see. In a fashion show you will likely not know what you will be wearing, and if you are lucky you will get to wear multiply outfits. Walking on stage with ashy body parts is not sexy at all. Even when doing a photo shoot, don’t waste your money with photos that are not going to be usable just because your ash is showing. The photographer’s job is not to photo shop your ash just because you were too lazy to lotion up. PANTYHOSE ARE YOUR FRIEND I don’t need to remind you that we are plus size, and most of us have those cellulite legs; I know I do, there is no shame here. Most models don’t have a clue how much work goes in the editing process. This is why most photographers like to schedule a consultation before the shoot to go over wardrobe, hair and the little details. They want to edit as little as possible. Your job is to help them with that; help them help you. Pantyhose work very well in covering up those less than perfect legs. You won’t have to worry about asking the photographer to photo shop them, unless you have a run. In that case replace them because nobody got time for that! TOUCH UP THAT HAIR No photographer is going to photo shop your out of place hair or new growth. Make sure you come fresh. Way too often I see young ladies with braids or weaves that look like that have been in for a little too long. Now ladies I know we like to hold on to our protective styles; this is cool for your everyday look. But when you are doing a shoot or a show then you have to go and freshen up that hair. Your hair should be freshly done for those photos; no exceptions. INVEST IN A STEAMER I strongly dislike seeing a model take really nice photos in wrinkled clothing. This goes for designers as well. You can get a really good steamer for under $30; I know because I have one. You can’t expect to shake your clothing out of a bag or bin and then be ready to show it to the public. It is just not going to do the garment any justice. Get you a steamer or iron before you leave and place in a good garment bag until you are on set. PLUCK THOSE FACIAL AND CHEST HAIRS For those of us that have those pesky little hairs growing on visible areas like the face and chest, make sure you get you some tweezers and get to plucking before you step on set. These lenses will magnify everything. Having to photo shop those things can get very tedious.

In parting, my advice to everyone is to do your part and come correct so you won’t be left asking the photographer “You can photo shop that right”.

NEW YORK FFFWEEK 2016 CASTING

NY FFFWEEK CASTING RECAP | STEPHANIE BRUMSEY

“I came to slay!” Walking into a room with hundreds of beautiful full figured hopefuls, the declaration and resounding responses of “yes, honey!” seemed completely correct. These women, hoping to be the next Ashley Graham or Tess Holiday, had indeed come to slay. Full Figured Fashion Week casting directors and their corporate sponsor, Fit For Me by Fruit of the Loom, wrapped up their 5-city casting tour in New York City. The ground breaking fashion experience had once again taken the show on the road in search of “the fiercest catwalk divas”; women from across the United States and Canada who could earn the opportunity to walk in the highly anticipated plus-sized week-long fashion event. The women will strut their stuff under the watchful eye of the casting team - casting director, host of Model Behavior and the Original Runway Diva, Sharon Quinn, along with executive producer and founder Gwen DeVoe. At the end of the process, only 50 women will be chosen out of the thousands of hopefuls who travelled to the auditions. FFFW also adds to its unique premise by casting plus-size petites; meaning models can be shorter than five-foot-eight — if they’ve got the right look and personality. “It’s not just about a pretty face,” Quinn explains. “It’s the look, the walk and the personality. I’m looking for the total package.” “We chose open casting calls because we feel that it’s a fairer forum,” DeVoe says. “There’s untapped talent out there. This gives women, who may be in some of the smaller cities a fair shot to be part of something big.” Big is just one word that could be used in reference to the event that has become an industry game changer. Now in its eighth year and celebrating its seventh anniversary, FFFW has grown from ”a bold step to support the plus size fashion movement” to a flagship event in one of the fashion capitals of the world. The event has hosted hundreds of industry professionals, appeared in publications like Vogue and The New York Times, and discovered models such as Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition 2016 cover model Ashley Graham, who was FFFW’s 2014 model of the year. “I’m never around people who are the same size as me,” says Jayna Tapia, 21, aspiring actress and model. “I walked into the room and all I could think was how beautiful these women were, and that goes such a long way in body positivity. You seeing it more now, in the media as plus-sized models cover mainstream magazines. But seeing it in the flesh; beautiful women, in beautiful clothes and are confident in themselves, I want to be a part of that.”

Holly is another model, from Washington D.C., similarly happy for a chance to proudly represent “team curvy”. “I think we’re starting to see ourselves,” says Holly Wiggins, 40, a model. “It was a struggle to feel beautiful at every size I was at; I didn’t feel beautiful or pretty. This movement, it helps you celebrate yourself. It took me most of my 30’s to grow and recognize that I should and could celebrate who I am. That’s why I’m here celebrating who I am today, I want to share that.” Its stories like these and DeVoe’s own experience that helped bring this event to the masses. “It was time,” DeVoe commented. “FFFW was started because I attended a NY Fashion week show, and after I left the show, I was underwhelmed. Here I am, the show was great, the clothing was beautiful, but I wasn’t able to purchase anything. Not because I couldn’t afford it, but because it didn’t come in my size, and the rest was kind of history.” FFFW has been a hit with consumers looking for something more than the loose and often ill-fitting dark clothing that was often offered as their only options. The week of diverse clothing presented on models that represent the clientele, has made a huge impact on the industry and how fashion is geared towards the average plus-sized woman. “Over half the women in America are size 14 and plus,” says style expert and Fit for Me ambassador Denise Caldwell. “We really just want to empower them right now. There’s so much out there right now about women and their bodies. That’s why Fit for Me is such a great fit with Full Figured Fashion Week because we want to empower women, from their clothing to what you can’t see underneath.” ”The more we do this and the more we get the word out, it’s only good for the industry,” DeVoe says. ”All I’ve ever wanted is for the industry to grow and for the fashion industry to recognize that the plus-size consumer dollar is a strong one. There is definitely a gap in the market, and we’re here to fill it.”

TIP FFF S TO WE PR EK’ EP S C ARI AS NG TIN FO GC R ALL

Hey Queens! The last time we met, I (dramatically, as per usual) went over how my preparation for the much anticipated plus-size casting call of the year, 2016 Full Figured Fashion Week, went over for me.

So, it wasn’t the model walk of the year, but I learned a thing or two about a possible formula for being a frontrunner in that category next time around.

You’re probably thinking, “This girl is crazy! The casting already happened, why is she giving us tips NOW?” Well, I’ll answer that for you. Yes, I am definitely crazy, but I’m writing these now because that’s how high the bar is set for this particular casting call. You have to be over prepared and which, in turn, will help you be ready and less stressed. So, get that head start now for 2017’s casting call!

1 year 6 months prior

● Research - You know that device that is glued to your hand and consumes your life? Get on it, go to FFFWeek on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram and their official website to get in the know with the brand. Read over previous year’s tips and tricks as a guideline for expectations on the next casting. FFFWeek’s blogger Maui Bigelow writes incredibly helpful articles about FFFWeek... READ THEM! One of the judges herself, Ms. Sharon Quinn, has a very informative talk show and will talk FFFWeek casting tips...watch it! This is a good guideline for any casting! #ModelHomework is too real. ● Training - Just because you watched every season of Project Runway (or if you’re fun like me, RuPaul’s Drag Race), doesn’t mean you’ve mastered the art of a model walk. Take runway classes and model workshops from working models or well known contributors to the fashion industry. The best way to learn is through individuals that have lived it and who actually book work. Now, everyone is different and what works for them might not work for you, but they are obviously doing something right! You never know until you try. Some classes and workshops will have a registration fee, others won’t. Don’t miss the one’s that do not have a fee and include reputable speakers! Like the prior tip, do your homework and research what the class entails, who is speaking and get yourself a cute Five-Star notebook to take notes for days. ● Practice - According to DigitalTrends.com, In 2015 Americans spent an average of 4.7 hours a day on

their smartphone looking at Facebook or double tapping on Instagram. Is admiring what your friends had for brunch going to make your model walk stronger? Nope. Spend quality, uninterrupted time practicing your model walk. In any situation, you will always default to how you rehearse. When you are practicing daily, your walk will become second nature and seem effortless every single time. Also, we are in the prime of technology so take out your cameraphone and record your model walks. The camera never lies...EVER. ● Health - Take. Care. Of. Your. Body! I cannot even stress the importance of this preparation tip. Drink plenty of water daily, eat clean, and stay active. If you have ever been in a fashion show of this caliber, you know how physically demanding they can be. Healthy and plussize can co-exist! I promise. ● Mentor - I was super lucky to find individuals passionate about helping others and that continue to always be open, honest and help me grow not only as an individual, but as a human being (they’re pretty spectacular and again, are the real stars of this magazine). Research reputable model management companies or even model mentors. Social media has the ability to connect people through Facebook groups, Hashtags on Instagram or Twitter and professionals on LinkedIn. Browse and do your #ModelHomework. It’s too real, remember? And yes, you read the timeline correctly. Start this EARLY.

● Composite (Comp) Card - I can always appreciate a good selfie, but when you’re competing against hundreds (possibly thousands?) to be one of 50 women chosen for FFFWeek, you’re going to need a fierce set of photos that show your body and face in the best lighting. Research photographers that specifically shoot models. Look at all their work, ask questions and make sure you do not compromise quality for quantity. Just because your neighbor’s friend of a friend has an awesome camera and will give you a discount on some photos, doesn’t mean you’ve scored a deal. You are your business therefore investments need to be made. Also, prior to your shoot, get all your ducks in a row - a makeup/hair artist, a variety of outfits that have purpose and flatter your body and your shoes for each outfit. Remember, modeling isn’t about you. It’s about the product and your responsibility is to do justice to the designer and sell the item for your client. Make sure you’re proving that in the photos as well as slaying the look! ● Practice - 2 - 3 times a week for at least 30 (uninterrupted) minutes will go a long way.

● Grooming - Go to your waxing appointments, get those nails in check and make sure you are fully stocked on the makeup you plan to wear on casting day. FFFWeek recommends a light “beat” to your face so do not go bare faced or like you’re about to hit the nightclub. A full face, light eyes and soft lips should do the trick to helping you stay fresh and looking fabulous in the casting room. ● Outfit - This is not the typical casting call where it’s expected to show up in the black tights, black/white tank and black or nude heels. FFFWeek instructs the ladies to attend with a fashionable outfit, which is great because this is an opportunity to let your personality shine! But, keep in mind you are, in a sense, going for a job. A job that would be a milestone in your modeling career. A job that thousands of curvy beauties want. That being said, find something that is fashionable, flatters your figure, and is tasteful. Do not forget about wearing body foundation! This is recommended by the FFFWeek website. Steam or iron the outfit, hang it and store it somewhere safe. ● Registration Forms - The required forms are usually on the FFFWeek website a few weeks prior to the first casting call date. Print them, fill them out accurately and pack them in your bag. ● Transit - This is especially vital to all the New York beauties! I’m sure you can all relate to showing up to your usual train only to find that it’s running local AND on an alternate line (I’m looking at you N train, that likes to go local on the weekends in Brooklyn). Check your local news for transit updates because the line for FFFWeek will usually start forming before the slated time. ● Practice - Oh, how did this bullet point get here again? That’s right! Because practice goes a long way, ladies!

● R & R - Get that beauty rest! Try to refrain from binge watching your favorite Netflix series until 3 a.m. or Candy Crushing all night. It will be there after the casting, I promise! Instead drink some tea, take a bath, put the latest Adele album on (let out a good cry because everyone in the world can relate to her lyrics) and get in bed early. Don’t forget to double check your makeup bag, outfit, shoes, comp card, and registration forms!

● Transit - Double check your route to the casting location. Smart phones now tell you the estimated time of arrival to your destinations based on your current location. Maybe in a few years, the smartphones will actually order cars for you or show you when the train is near...oh wait! It does that already. #NoExcuses ● Breakfast - Eat a light breakfast like oatmeal, an omelette, or some fruit. Be sure you have something in your system because depending how many models are in front of you when you arrive, the wait time will vary and can get lengthy. ● Arrive early - As the saying goes, if you’re early, you’re on time. If you’re on time, you’re late! ● Have fun - If you’re not having fun doing it, then no one is having fun watching you. Be confident, trust yourself and own the runway. Cue me screaming on the sidelines for you, “YASSSSSS QUEEN!”

There are instances in this industry, and in life, that you have to do more than want it. It’s as simple as this - dreams don’t work unless you do. Work leads to work. And if you are not willing to put in the work, do not complain about the results. Full Figured Fashion Week is a fierce competition for us full figured divas, but it can happen to those ladies who put in the work. So as the great RuPaul says, “You betta WERK!”. Good luck, beauty queens! See you all at the 2017 casting! Alexandra Castro is an actress, producer, plus-model, body positive enthusiast, avid brunch-goer and San Antonio Spurs lover. She was lucky enough to grace the cover of Queen Size Magazine’s February 2016 issue. Did we miss a good preparation tip? Feel free to connect with her on www.alexandra-castro.com and let us know!
