Note from the Editor Welcome to the November 2015 issue of Queen Size Magazine. I can’t believe that I am really saying this but it is officially Fall. Where did the time go? I look around me and continue to see the same people doing the same thing they did two years ago; some longer than that. I am saddened by the fact that people still tend to think that time is on their side. I often think about what is next for me after this life; and then I slap myself. Why think about the afterlife when you still have this one to live? I pray that folks really begin to take life more serious. We are all put her for a purpose. It is time to find out what that purpose is and begin living it. I dedicate this issue to all that are living their purpose and to those trying to find theirs. To everyone who has ever supported Queen Size Magazine by purchasing a copy, sharing our page or even saying a prayer for our continued success, we thank you. ard, Jr

GETTING STARTED
..............................................
by SARAH CURVYBEAUTY
Getting Started
I’ve been battling with my weight since I was a little girl. I always wanted to lose the weight, but let’s face it- it’s hard! I decided very young that being over-weight was just how it’s going to be for me. It wasn’t until my after daughter was born, that my weight truly bothered me. After looking at a picture of me I was embarrassed, I looked at that picture and thought “that cannot be me!” In 2008 I decided to take control of my weight and I inquired about the gastric bypass, aside from being morbid obese, I had no other health issues and after carefully talking to the bariatric surgeon, we decided that the lap band would be a better choice for me. It doesn’t matter how bad you want to lose weight, if you don’t permanently change the choices that you make, you’ll only temporarily change. That’s sort of what happened with me. I’ve been maintaining my weight but I am definitely not where I want and need to be weight wise, but I am working on what size is the best size that fits me. So I am cordially inviting you to join me on continuing my weight loss journey. Let’s get started on a workout plan that’s fit for a Queen! Let’s decide that our lives matter and begin to take care of our health. I personally enjoy working out and getting into a routine, I like to dance and shake off my stress, so my routine includes loads of cardio. There are so many workouts to choose from and I am on a mission to show you as many different types of exercise as I can, so you can see what options are out there. I’ll also be interviewing personal trainers from the East Coast to the West Coast. Not only will I be conducting interviews with personal trainers, I will be posting videos to show you exactly what you can expect AND I will also be interviewing nutritionist as well as wellness healers. There is no doubt in my mind that you will get hooked on one of them and not only will you be benefiting from it by becoming a healthier version of you, I’m almost certain you’ll find the want to become the all-around best version of you! Lets’ do it!! Signing off, Sarah CurvyBeauty

GETTING STARTED| BY SARAH CURVYBEAUTY
FITNESS 101 First things first! What are your fitness goals? Have you spoken to your doctor? Are you really committed? These are just a few things you should think about before committing to your fitness goals; before starting, talk to your doctor to make sure your fitness goals and expectations are realistic and if you’re ok doing specific exercises. It’s ok to start off small and take one day at a time, don’t push yourself too hard but don’t be too easy on yourself either. Here is a few decisions you may want to make: Decide how often and how long you are going to commit to your new workout routine, decide what your workout will detail and decide if the exercises that you choose are a good fit for you. There are so many great exercises you can do, but before you start you should stretch your body to prepare it for activity it may not be used to. If you’re not sure your body can handle a rigorous workout or if you are a beginner or even if you would like to start off a little less aggressive, you can do many different exercises such as; walking and swimming. Walking and/or swimming are great cardio workouts, you can control how fast or slow you go and for how long. Eventually you’ll pick up the pace and while walking maybe add some weights. If you’re interested in maybe going a little more aggressively, you could start with a warm up to prepare your body and then begin one minute intervals: walking for one minute then jogging for one minute. Set a goal of 15 minutes but see how long you can do, you may surprise yourself! If you’re ready for a great rigorous workout and you’re ready to sweat, you can start with the intervals of walking for one minute and running for one minute for a total of 30 minute to an hour. Again, please be sure to properly stretch before starting any workouts.
Eating Healthy Eating healthy goes hand in hand with your new workout routine, there’s no point in working out if you’re not going to change your eating habits. You can always speak
with a nutritionist regarding your nutritional goals. In the meantime there are specific things that should be erased from your normal eating habits such as; fast food, sweets and sugared drinks. Don’t fight me just yet! There are plenty of substitutions that you can make yourself in place of burgers, fries, doughnuts and soda and you will be surprised how much better it taste. Give yourself a chance and change your habits for at least 3 weeks, you’ll also be surprised how you no longer crave certain foods, and you’ll want to keep up the good work! Water is essential while working out, but it’s also great to drink throughout your day. I know a lot of people complain they don’t like the taste of water, but some people prefer drinking water at room temperature while others prefer refrigerated or ice cold water. If you are craving a sugary drink placing fruit in your water is a great substitute. You can try a lemon wedge, a strawberry or two or even an orange slice. Again, give yourself a chance and explore what you like. Preparing your meals is a major benefit during this transition. Don’t give yourself the chance to think about all the food you’re trying to eliminate from your diet. A lot of times people sabotage their healthy change due to the fact of poor planning and they eat what’s familiar. If you prepare each meal for the day or even the week, I can guarantee you will have great success. Sometimes when we change our eating habits and bring water into our lives while working out, we see a dramatic change in our waist lines. If you are serious about exercising and getting healthy, there are certain things we just have to give up. Don’t completely deprive yourself of certain foods you love, you can give yourself a day to have some ice cream or whatever it is you’re craving, the key is to not over indulge. You can do this!

feel when they are eating. Not everyone is hungry when they eat, but sometimes we can develop a routine when it comes to eating and it just leads to eating out of a habit, so writing down how hungry you really are will help you out tremendously. Plus writing down what you eat will help out a lot should you gain or are unable to lose weight, you may wish to take your journal to a licensed professional who can determine what is holding your weight loss back without you even realizing what it is you’re doing. We tend to develop a pattern when we eat so jotting down what we are eating can help you get to know what you’re doing. For instance, you may have something sugary every day at a certain time without even realizing it. Your journal may help you out more than you think, especially when you are holding yourself accountable for what you eat.
OVERVIEW Deciding to maintain a healthy lifestyle is not only a very important decision, but a very smart decision. Commit to your workout decision on how often and how long, make your workout routines realistic, include healthy eating into your routine, prepare your meals and journal everything you eat as well as the workouts that you are doing. Don’t be so hard on yourself, this may be a major adjustment in life, but well worth it! Remember that a routine takes time to get the hang of it, but stick to it and the outcome will be amazing.
JOURNALING When starting off with your new lifestyle change, it’s not uncommon for people to journal what they eat throughout their day and the times they ate or even how they

“To Answer Your Question” By SHIRLEY BEALE
He’s a Freak!!! Question: Hello Shirley. My man is a straight-up freak. He’s always coming home with different ideas and things he wants to try. Sometimes I do and sometimes I don’t. He says he want to keep the fire burning but at this rate, he going to burn me out. I’m tired and sometimes I just want to go to sleep. Am I wrong for not wanting to participate in all these crazy antics? SHIRLEY’S RESPONSE: YES, YOU ARE WRONG. Your man is coming to YOU, not going in the street. I feel he should take your feelings into consideration if you are tired or not feeling well but other than that, ask yourself a few questions: One, does he provide for me and/or the family? Two, is he a great partner? Three, Do I want this relationship to last? If the answer to those questions is yes, then you’d better break out a trick bag of your own. There are plenty of women that are waiting for a man like yours and unfortunately, some are skanks that won’t have a problem trying to move in on what you have, AND THEY WILL DO IT RIGHT IN YOUR FACE !!!!! But that’s another story. I can promise you that there are PLENTY OF WOMEN WHO WISH, WISH, WISH, WISH they had your problem. Does he have a brother, uncle, cousin, dad or friend that is like him? If so, I can start running a dating site rather than an advice column. In a relationship, you have to give and take. Try and do some things that will make him happy. Get home early and rest. Before he comes home, be prepared for whatever. Remember, he is coming home to YOU. I suggest you count your blessings and enjoy the ride. If you feel it’s too much for you, I know a few “walking dead men” that may be the perfect fit. Let me know.
GETTING OVER IT Question: Hello Shirley, how do you get over losing someone? SHIRLEY’S RESPONSE: Hello. Getting over losing someone can be difficult in any situation. Whether you lost them in death or end of a relationship, I would give the same answer. First, I would continue to pray and ask God for direction and guidance. Counseling is another option to help in the healing process. If you have a solid support system, talk to family and friends whom you trust. TIME IS
WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|NOVEMBER 2015 ISSUE
REALLY A HEALER. As time passes, the hurt will begin to lessen. I wish you well in your healing process.
TATTLETALE Question: If you know someone is doing something illegal, should you tell? SHIRLEY’S RESPONSE: Well, if you know for sure, and not just speculating, I would weigh several things. One, is someone’s life or health in jeopardy? Two, will telling result in your safety being compromised? Three, What would you benefit if you do? There are too many variables to give a more detailed answer but I pray you make the correct decision
WHAT HE WON’T DO Question: Shirley, My significant other does not like to do any of the outdoor things that normal couples like to do. It’s always an excuse. I like walks on the lake. He says it affects his allergies. I like going to the movies. He said too many people. I like to sit home and cuddle. He says he doesn’t have time. I’m getting tired of the excuses and it hurts to see other couples doing it and I don’t. I’m tempted to get someone to do those things with me. Is that wrong? SHIRLEY’S RESPONSE: This is a sad situation. I would have a talk with your significant other and ask the reasons why he refuses to do these things with you. It doesn’t sound like a lot to ask unless he is doing them with someone else or have no desire to do it with you. Doing these things with someone else is not the answer unless you are talking about a platonic friend who enjoys the same things. If you desire to do these things only with your significant other, I would explain to them how important this is to you and that you only want to do it with them. Share the fact that your relationship is very important to you and it would mean a lot for him or her to make your needs and desires a priority. Life is precious and tomorrow is not promised. If these things truly make you happy, I would suggest you do them without your significant other, either with a friend or alone, but do the things that make you happy. If your significant other is not careful, you may find someone who would love to share these joys of life with you. Love yourself first and don’t deprive yourself because someone else won’t share with you.

NO JOB, NO LOVE Question: Shirely, I recently lost my job the latter part of last year. I have been diligently looking and have found nothing. It is a major pride buster to not be able to support your family. I have lost the urge for sex and everything else. When my girl wants it, I tell her I don’t feel well but actually I just don’t want it. I start a fight to leave the house and come back when she is sleep. It’s not that I’m not attracted to her. It’s just that sex ain’t on my mind when I have no money. Then people look at you like you lazy and say you can find a job but I can’t. I’m middle 40s, decent build; smart but I need a job. SHIRLEY’S RESPONSE: Hi Jobless and loveless. I understand how you feel. It is hard trying to find a job in your mid 40s or at any age for that matter. When there is no finance, many times, it can affect the romance. Instead of looking for a “job”, think about what you like to do, what you LOVE TO DO and turn that into your moneymaker. I have always believed that if you do something you love for a living, you’ll never have to work a day in your life. That means if you do what is your passion each day, you can be compensated, enjoy life and never feel like you work. Talk to your girl and share your feelings with her. Maybe there is something she can do to help you discover your true passion or maybe she can help you find a job. You hang in there. When you change your mindset, your mentality will send the signal to your body and everything will be back to normal. If your passion cannot sustain your living at the moment, explore the option to go back to school. Many schools offer programs to people returning to school to further their education. You appear to be a resourceful and caring person. Don’t give up and I’ll be praying for you. Let me know what you’ve decided.

CHRIS GRIMES Christopher Grimes is an up and coming photographer, who is of independent status. He currently lives and is based in New York City. Despite being a new presence to the industry, the talent and quality shown in his current work, exhibits an exciting potential and promise of things to come in the future. Chris’ education consists of a High School diploma and less than 3 years of Community College where his last major study was computer programming. The influence which has come to bring Chris to photography is interesting. Videogames and Japanese animation, also known as anime, is a couple of the major catalysts. He marveled at the various art styles found in these mediums, just as other fans did. One of the most attractive attributes, aside from a strong story, in Anime and videogames, are the visuals. Colors and themes are hard to miss in these entertainment mediums. Anime series such as Rurouni Kenshin, Gundam Wing and Ghost in The Shell, presented imagery which developed and fed an appreciation of art. Similarly, video games like Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid also played (no pun intended) an influential role. Sources such as these compelled Chris to attempt recreating the visual styles he observed, with real people, in his earliest photos. As his talent evolved, with the help of photographer friends he used his influences as a template towards evolving the look of his photos. Needless to say, friends and family who were closest with Chris have encouraged him to try getting involved in photography on a more professional scale. They knew it was already something he enjoyed doing as a hobby. Along the way, with tips, advise and help from other photographers, he has been learning to evolve his talent into its current form today. DIABETES HEALTH AND YOU ..............................................
by NATALIE DAWN
We have all heard someone jokingly speak on “Sugar Diabetes.” While often seeming funny to speak on while referring to sweet foods or just eating good food in general diabetes is a very serious illness that is becoming more common in modern days. Oxford Dictionary defines diabetes as “a metabolic disease in which the body’s inability to produce any or enough insulin causes elevated levels of glucose in the blood.” In other words if you have diabetes your body does not make enough insulin which causes high blood glucose (blood sugar) levels. Glucose is an important part of our heath it provides energy for our cells and helps make up our muscles and tissues. Eventually these high blood sugar levels cause problems in other areas of our bodies and can lead to serious and sometime chronic health problems. According to Centers for Disease and Control Center (CDC) diabetes is the 7th leading cause of death in the United States. More than 29 million people in the United States have diabetes and surprisingly one out of every four people is not aware they have it. CDC predicts that by 2050 one in every three people will be diabetic.
WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|NOVEMBER 2015 ISSUE
Types of Diabetes There are a few different types of diabetes that you can be diagnosed with; pre diabetes, type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes. When diagnosed with prediabetes your blood sugar level are “in between” it is above average but not high enough to be considered a full diabetic. If you are pre-diabetic exercise and diet can take your body back to normal blood sugar levels. Being diagnosed with pre- diabetes can be considered as your warning. Type 1 diabetes can develop in both adults and children but was once known as juvenile diabetes. It is cause by your body’s immune system attacking and destroying the cells that make insulin. Type 2 Diabetes tends to develop in middle age and older adults, but like Type 1 can be found in both children and adults. People who may be overweight and inactive are more at risk for having this type. With type 2 diabetes the body starts to resist insulin and as a result makes more insulin but cannot keep up with the higher demand causing those diagnosed to take insulin based on glucose levels. Gestational diabetes occurs in pregnant women. During pregnancy a woman can make hormones that are insulin resistant but this type of diabetes usually goes away after the baby is born.

Am I at Risk? How can I prevent myself from getting diabetes? Family, history, diet, race, location, weight and age are a few determining factors on whether you may be at risk of having diabetes in your life time. Diabetes can be controlled and prevented by keeping a balance. Diet plays a big role in keeping healthy glucose levels. Staying away from concentrated sweets like donuts, candy, and cake will keep you blood sugar closer to a normal range. Foods that are beneficial are fruits, vegetable, and those food that are high in fiber. Doing physical activity 10-20 minutes a day can help control your weight and blood sugar levels. Although diabetes has been known to be a cause of death, living with diabetes is not a death sentence. With the proper care diabetes can be managed and even treated. Make sure you are taking care of yourself. If you have experiencing any signs or symptoms make sure you let you doctor know and get your blood sugar levels checked. DANIEL C. MITCHELL About Daniel Daniel C. Mitchell, II is an 11 year old Brooklyn native. He lives with his Mom and Dad in Bedford Stuyvesant and his favorite subjects in school are Math and Science. He’s the Captain of his basketball team where he plays as a Point Guard. When Danny is not studying, practicing his skills on the court or creating designs for Knot Standard Bowties, he enjoys going swimming and playing video games with his cousins. Danny is also a huge Hip Hop fan! Some artists who inspire him are Jay Z, Drake, Kanye West, Janelle Monae and Bruno Mars. In the future, Danny sees himself in the NBA, being an entrepreneur and leading Knot Standard Bowties into a household name.
About Company Knot Standard is a tie company for those who dare to stand out! The brain child of Daniel C. Mitchell, II, aka “Danny Fresh”, the company was conceived from a desire to inject a bit of personality into a world of mundane uniform attire. One day Danny went to school dressed for success in his uniform and a cool football tie, only to find three other students wearing the exact same thing! He was mortified, but little did he know this was the day the tie revolution would begin. Dismayed and discouraged, he went home and told his mom the story. She offered to make him a one of a kind bowtie guaranteed to be an original. They made one by hand with a material that belonged to his grandmother who was an amazing seamstress. Danny loved the feeling of knowing he was wearing a one of a kind tie. He started to join his mom at the fabric store and helped pick out his own fabrics to make sure it matched his vision. Soon Knot Standard was born and the rest is fashion history in the making! Knot Standard ties are unisex and offer a limited number of ties in each fabric in order to ensure an exclusive fashion experience. Please wear with confidence!
Tawana: Young man, let me begin by saying that I am extremely proud of you and I am honored to have met you. You are off to an amazing start. How does it feel to be an 11 year old entrepreneur? Danny: It feels good because in the future I don’t have to have other people bossing me around. I want to make my own money and put it towards things that are important like going to college. Tawana: Do you enjoy school? You can be honest with me. Lol Danny: I do enjoy school because my school has a lot of extracurricular activities like football and basketball. I play on the football team now and the basketball team when the season starts. But my favorite subjects are math and science and I like writing. Tawana: Did you ever think that you would get involved in fashion designing? Danny: Well no not really. I started off just making ties for myself. It was my aunt who suggested that I make it into a business and I’m glad I did. Tawana: Before you began designing bowties, did you have any idea on what you wanted to do when you got older? Danny: Yes I had an idea - and I still doc I want to go to the NBA.
I get older because I like it. but I do want to go in the NBA so hopefully both. Tawana: You named a few Hip Hop artists that inspire you; is there anyone within the fashion industry that inspires you? Danny: Yes Kanye West because he balances his music with his clothing line and I want to do that too. Another thing I like about Kanye is that he made his fashion line even when other people told him that he couldn’t. Tawana: I love a man that likes to dress in suits and wears cool ties. Are ties a normal part of your school uniform? Danny: Yes! If you don’t wear a tie every day in my school you get a demerit and if you get three demerits you go to detention and I don’t like detention. Lol. I figured if I have to wear a tie every day it might as well be my own Knot Standard original Tawana: Your designs are not only for the gentlemen, the ladies can also get in on the fun as well. I think that is a brilliant and very unique idea. Who came up with the idea for the hair ties for the ladies? Danny: Well it was my mom’s idea to make the hair ties for the girls. I come from a big family and I have seven female cousins so we wanted them to be able to feel included too. Actually some of the ties are named after my cousins.
Tawana: Is fashion designing it for you? Is this where you are staying as far as your career goes? Danny? No I don’t think so. I mean I will still make bowties when

Is there a website that people can go to in order to purchase some of your designs? Danny: My website is ww.knotstandardbowties.com Tawana: Any final words that you would like to leave us with? ERICA JACKSON Hi Maintenance was born in 2000 as a jewelry company. In the early stages of the company they sold hand crafted earrings on EBay. When EBay failed the consideration of closing the business was a serious option for CEO/ owner Erica Jackson until a good friend Omar Abdullah convinced her to rethink her business strategy and a new Hi Maintenance was born; but this time selling both custom made and wholesale pieces. Ms. Jackson was so determined to make it work this time that she began selling door to door delivering pieces to customers that ordered by email, phone, and Instagram. Due to her determination and hard work it flourished, creating an amazing following considering themselves Hi Maintenance Divas; thus earning herself the name ”Ms. Hi Maintenance”. In 2013 Ms. Jackson was asked to create a custom body chain for a coordinator of Fashion Fights Aids. Upon her arrival to the event she instantly fell in love with the fashion scene. She was always an animate lover of fashion and considered herself a fashionista, so she decided right then and there she wanted to try her hand at fashion design and that is when Hi Maintenance Couture was born! In October 2013 she met with an amazing singer called Shontyce who gave her her first shot at the runway and her very first clothing line was created; it has been nothing but an amazing success ever since!! Hi Maintenance is an edgy clothing line for women that love to stand out, women who want to look and feel like a Diva. They make one of a kind pieces that really stand out from a crowd with a mixture of sexy and bold jewelry to create a look that defines their name Hi Maintenance. Hi maintenance makes clothing for all size woman, kids, and men specializing in woman’s clothing. The CEO believes in her brand and creates each piece personally and hopes that her love for her craft shows in her hard work. It was not an easy road to create Hi Maintenance but it was all worth it in the end; say hello to Hi Maintenance Couture!!

Tammie Starr is a professional Plus Size Model and TV Host with 28 yrs of experience working in the fashion industry. She currently has her own company called Starr Productions in which she is partnered with videographer James Mason. Her company teaches all people what steps it takes to become a model or a correspondent in the entertainment industry. While she is running her own company she is also hosting events representing plus size divas from across the world. Companies like OSCE entertainment, Hollywood Broker TV and Big Dream Productions has hired her to premiere on the red carpet at various events.
continue so she kept on competing in pageants and she kept on showcasing herself locally until she caught the attention of Designers Dede Allure, Los Angeles first ever plus size fashion week designer and Sharlene Borremeo the first ever designer to showcase her designers in San Diego fashion week. These women are amazing with their unique designs and they wanted the world to know that the plus size industry is rising up from under the stereotypes. These women needed Tammie to bring their designs to the forefront so they both featured her as their top model when they were showcasing their designs at fashion week.
Tammie started in the entertainment industry when she was 19 years old. She started her modeling career while she was employed with Ferror’s Fashions in Pensacola, Florida. They wanted to do a commercial to bring business to their establishment so they ask Tammie to appear in their commercial to showcase their fashions. It was there that she was recognized by designer Trinket Mallory. Ms Mallory took Tammie under her wing and helped her showcase her talents all around Pensacola. Tammie was representing all the plus size Divas in the world by competing in pageants throughout the county. Tammie actually won the title Ms Pensacola sometime back in the early 1990’s. After competing in Florida Tammie had bigger goals to pursue so she relocated to California to pursue her modeling career. After arriving in California she met Angela Rene of Purple Diva Designs; she worked with Angela to help her with her goals and Angela became so impressed on how quickly Tammie flourished that she made her the Spokesperson of Purple Diva Designs. After working with Angela she also worked with Designer Liz Russell and was the first plus size Model to showcase her designs.
Tammie continues to push open doors for women all over the world. She is going to continue to show the world how beautiful and talented she is. She is going to continue to mentor women all over the world and teach them that no matter what size you are you are beautiful and talented. She tells the world to “Keep Shining.” Don’t ever lose your focus. Tammie would also like to thank her friend and mentor Velvet, Ms Velvet is a supermodel in her own right and she was there to help encourage Tammie to keep pushing them doors open. She told her she had what it took to become who she is today. For that Tammie would always look up to her in the many years to come.
After receiving her formal training Tammie started competing in pageants in Los Angeles and San Diego. She competed in Miss Plus Size top Model for many years and she was the first Plus Host for San Diego fashion magazine. Tammie was determine to open doors for many plus size people who did not feel comfortable with their size and fell to the stereotypes that society placed on them, that Plus size people do not belong in the front of the line that they need to stay behind the scenes and keep quiet and accept that they do not have the talent necessary to make it in the fashion/entertainment industry. Well Tammie was not going to let this stereotype
Tammie Starr was born in Moline, Illinois. She grew up in Chicago and relocated to places like Pennsylvania, Florida and finally California. She is proud to say that she came from a military family. Her father was a Green Beret in the Army. She also is a loving mother of two amazing sons. Their names are Ryan and Elijah. Each son is talented in their own way. Tammie taught her sons never to give up on their dreams and always reach for their goals. Ryan is a student at University of Arizona and received a full football scholarship for his talent. He is currently majoring in Sociology and Football. Elijah is her youngest and is in the six grade. He is an honor roll student and he also is following in mom’s footsteps in pursuing a career in modeling and acting. With Tammie’s love and teaching both these boys will reach their goals. Air Brush Makeup versus Hand Brush Makeup Which Is Better? What do you prefer?
Hello to all my readers I hope all is well and everyone had an awesome and terrific summer. The fall and winter months will soon be approaching and in the makeup world this triggers a “little bell”. This is the time where I start to consider my fall/winter skin care regime and switch over to my fall colors. This also a good time to throw out expired makeup. Take the time out preview the new makeup trends for the fall. I was asked by our CEO of Queen Size Magazine to address this little topic this month. It is funny because I am often asked did you airbrush your makeup today. So now this got me to thinking HUMM? What is really better Air brush or Hand Brush? As a Makeup Artist I never gave this any real thought because I enjoy working with all methods of makeup application. I started thinking how is this difficult for the everyday woman? Is it easier to use a regular foundation brush and liquid foundation to apply your makeup in the morning? So I took a closer look.
Airbrush does have a learning curve but with proper training anyone can master it with practice. I always recommend, even to a Makeup artist, that if you plan to air brush, don’t go out and buy a huge compressor and fancy gun in the beginning of your journey. Purchase something affordable and small what will do the job. Companies like Dinair, Temptu and Luminess make good compressors and all kits come with a great air brush gun. I own all three and use them on clients and myself. Now you wonder what “the learning curve” is; application for starters. Airbrush is designed to make you appear natural and wearing a “second skin”. If you don’t apply the foundation in layers you will appear very “cakey” looking. I have airbrushed someone and they say “I can’t see it” but after it settles in and you apply the rest of your makeup the finished look is really flawless and amazing. It is also long lasting make up. I recommend that airbrush be used on long photo shoots, brides for weddings and long fashion shows. The beauty of air brush is that you can also add any other makeup product along with it. For example if you need to do a little “touch up” you can with a brush and a little foundation (make sure the colors match). The second learning curve with airbrush is the motion that you use to apply. To achieve full coverage and even coverage you need to apply in a circular motion and hold the airbrush at least 6 inches from your face. This is a repetitive motion that you need to get used to. I have often heard “my arms hurt” after using an airbrush machine. The third learning curve is product amount. When using air brush you are really using very small drops
WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|NOVEMBER 2015 ISSUE
of liquid foundation so if you spray too much too fast you will use more foundation than necessary; thus we call this “wasting product”. So with that all said what is wrong with a good old fashion makeup brush and liquid foundation? Does this method have a learning curve as well? The answer is nothing is really wrong in applying makeup this way and this has a learning curve as well. The key to using liquid foundation is a synthetic brush and a small sponge. If you don’t use the correct brush the results are a very “streaky and blotchy” look upon the face. The application, similar to air brush, is an uneven finish. Another issue with using a brush is bacteria. If you don’t clean your brushes with a brush cleaner often you are risking putting bacteria on your skin thus risking skin infections and breakouts So I guess now that you have all the information what is the best answer. For me personally there is nothing wrong with either method. Air brush or hand brush makeup both achieves the same goal. In the end it all boils down to what makes you comfortable and are you willing to learn! I also take lifestyle into consideration. If you have busy life and can afford a little extra time to airbrush your makeup in the morning, this is great. But if not, I say stick to hand method. It is much easier to correct.
AIRBRUSH VS HAND BRUSH
If airbrush appeals to you just practice until you become comfortable and proficient with the tool. Don’t be afraid of the tool. I suggest taking a class. Need some help? I am an airbrush certified MUA and teach affordable basic airbrush classes by appointment. You can e-mail me at thecolorbox69@gmail.com for bookings. If applying your makeup by hand with a brush, invest in a synthetic brush and even invest in a beauty blender sponge. Using these to tools together will actually give you an “airbrushed finish”. With both methods sanitation is key. Make sure you clean your hand brush with brush cleaner and dry properly. All brushes should dry for 24 to 72 hours brush pointing down or off the edge of the counter. Airbrush guns use a special cleaner and you need to learn how to take apart your airbrush gun to clean it if clogs or in one year for full cleaning. An airbrush gun can last you for 10 years or more if you take care of it. Finally my beauties nothing is easy! Practice/ Educate/Practice!

Every year these ladies put on a show that is talked about in the industry leading up to the next year. I know that I can speak for everyone in attendance when I say that it was very well organized and a fun time had by all. Designers such as Jordan Valois, Denise Washington of 710 Fashions, 11 year old Kid-Preneur Daniel Mitchell of Knot Standard Bow Ties, Shanon Shenone, Amitabon Boutique, Sweetie Koolture Children’s Wear and the infamous Big Girls United (B.G.U.) Traces Of My Pen By: Amanda Tucciarone
When I Was a Kid When I Was a Kid… Colors were changing quickly, And the leaves were chasing one another to the ground. The sun was shining down on me, And the birds were flying away into all these different directions, To find a new place to stay; Before winter came to play. When I was a kid, I used to jump in a pile of leaves and toss em’ high in the airWithout a care in the world. Now I’m old enough to know how gross it is, But I still do it while no ones looking. When I was a kid, I used to collect as many leaves as I could, One of each and every size, In every color they came in. Now I wish they weren’t so diverse, Because it takes me forever to clean up my yardAnd I’m not getting paid to do it anymore. Colors change, Leaves create patterns all across the ground. The sun shines just perfectly, And I can wear my brand new sweater that I bought back in June. But the best part about it being fall; The birds can no longer wake me up so earlyBecause now my alarm clock has taken over that job. When I was a kid, Fall was my favorite season of the year; And it still is.
