hat is stress? Stress is a state of mental or emotional strain or tension, resulting from adverse or very demanding circumstances. While experiencing stress our bodies produce hormones such as cortisol, adrenocorticotropic hormone, oxytocin, epinephrine, and endorphins. Cortisol and other hormones produced because of stress are not harmful in small amounts, and are needed periodically. However, if high levels are produced for prolonged periods this can be very damaging. There are several ways we can be affected by stress. I want to start off by mentioning that if you are not at ease, you open yourself up to Dis-EASE. When we are overly stressed it weakens the body mentally. Chronic stress can affect us emotionally and physically, and can lower our immune system; making you more susceptible and prone to certain diseases and ailments. For instance, research done by Johns Hopkins University found that children exposed to chronic stress are more likely to develop a mental illness, if they are genetically predisposed. Also, stress has been linked to an increase in illnesses such as cancer, lung disease, cirrhosis of the liver, heart disease, heart attacks, and suicidal depression.

Stress can affect your personality Being over stressed can cause us to be more irritable, respond more aggressively to things that annoy us, and can make someone just all around cranky.

Stress can affect your libido and sexuality. High levels of cortisol and/or stress can negatively affect weight, a man’s testosterone levels, sexual desire. With men, it can also lead to performance anxiety, and impotence. In women, it can suppress sex hormones, lower the libido, and lessen the quality and enjoyment of sex. WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|NOVEMBER 2017 ISSUE

LET’S TALK STRESS| COURTNEY K. PENNINGTON Stress can have an impact on the body’s natural functions and the endocrine system. The endocrine system is made up of and controls several glands and organs including the hypothalamus, pineal gland, pituitary gland, thyroid, thymus, pancreas, adrenal gland, ovaries, testicles, and the placenta during pregnancy. Amenorrhea is a stress related ailment affecting the ovaries that causes a female’s period to become irregular or temporarily stop menstruation. Stress can impact fertility and high levels of stress during pregnancy can cause behavioral and developmental issues in the child after birth.

Premature aging can be a result chronic stress. Research from the University of California found that stress shorten structures on the end of chromosomes called telomeres. As a result, new cells cannot grow as quickly. Lacking sufficient cell growth leads to wrinkles, weak muscles, loss of collagen, and a more noticeable appearance of cellulite.

Now for the good news…

There is a lot you can do to decrease your stress, and there are a number of ways to destress on a daily and regular basis.

Don’t over load yourself with more than you can handle.

7

Make time to relax. Drinking (black) tea can lower post-stress cortisol levels. Taking a bath is a great way to relax, and the damp heat and stream are great for relieving muscle tension. Get a massage, let’s really talk about relieving muscle tension. Besides just taking some “you time”, massage may help with stress short term, but longer lasting effects can occur with regular massage. I usually recommend getting a massage every 3-6 week to maintain healthy muscle tissue. Visit some sites like massagebook. com, soothe.com (they also have an app), UaHanSon.com, Thumbtack.com, and AMTAmassage.org, to make finding a massage therapist near you a little easier.

Show yourself some love. Hugging can lower your stress level and blood pressure. Kissing releases hormones that combat hormones released during stress like cortisol. Having sex can relive the physical symptoms caused by stress. The effects of stress can be very damaging to the body and mind and let’s face it, stress feels horrible. Thankfully, some of the best remedies are good for you and feel great too, like getting a massage, hugging someone you love, or having some wine and hanging out with friends. Remember to take care of yourself first, so you can continue to conquer the world.

Women can do it all. All of us are ‘Wonder Woman’, we can do anything we set our minds to, able to take on anything that comes our way. But just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. It’s okay to need help, and asking for help doesn’t make you a weaker person. Being able to delegate task to others is a great way to prevent yourself from taking on too much.

Knowing when enough is too much. We all have probably felt like our to-do list is a million items long, and there aren’t enough hours in the day. Knowing how to manage your time and writing down your tasks, will help you organize what you must get done. Being able to cross items off your list will also help you feel accomplished. Breaking the big to-do list down into a list of smaller tasks will make everything you have to tackle seem more manageable. Don’t be so hard on yourself or worry about getting everything done in one day. Take care of the most immediate and time sensitive tasks first and don’t procrastinate. Leaving things to the last minute can make you feel rushed and even more stressed.

Getting some exercise is a great way to relieve stress. The endorphins released in your body from your workout will lower your stress level.

Try Yoga, visualization, or meditation. Deep, centered breathing and focusing the mind will help to release stress.

Hello Queen, let’s talk skincare WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|NOVEMBER 2017 ISSUE

It is very important to have a skin care routine. As we go about our day-to-day routine our skin is exposed to the various toxins in the air, also things such as smoking, hydration and, dietary routines can play a factor on the appearance of your skin. Canvas ready skin is simply having a smooth base that is ready for makeup application. Because you love the skin you are in so take care of it. To choose the best skin care products and routine it is recommended you visit an esthetician to learn more about how to properly care for your skin, particular if you have problem areas you would like to address. Always seek a professional’s advice before you start to dump tons of money into products, save yourself the headache. But here are some quick tips for a basic skin care routine.

TIP 1 CLEANSE. Make sure you are properly cleansing your skin especially if you wearing makeup. It is important to clean all of the dirt and oils of the makeup. Makeup wipe removers are not enough to get all of the product off of your skin. Make sure are using a cleansing foam or a cleansing bar. TIP 2 MASK ON. Now that your face is clean it’s time to use a gentle face mask. This can help eliminate black heads that can build up on the skin and also reduce the appearance of pores. Limit using a face mask to no more than one a week.

TIP 3 IT’S TIME TO TONE. Pick your favorite toner and apply to remove even more dirt and oils from your pores. TIP 4 MOISTURIZE. Moisturize is essential this can help to rehydrate the skin. Make sure that you are moisturizing your skin twice a day, some companies offer day and night moisturizer. Now that you have the tips you can determine what products works well for your skin type and have that Canvas ready skin for your next Makeup session. Tazah Richardson is more than just a plus size model. She is a daughter, a spouse, a dance coach, an HR manager, an MUA, a mentor, a motivator and an inspiration; not just to the women in her family and not just to the women in her community but also thanks to social media she is an inspiration to women who look like her all across the globe! “I am them and they are me! We all share a lot of the same struggles.” Every time she walk the runway with confidence or strike a pose in front of a camera with poise, she is proving to everyone that beauty doesn’t just come in a size zero. Tazah’s mission in life is not just to succeed but to see those around her succeed as well. She wants to promote body positivity across all sizes because she is a woman before she is full figured. According to Tazah “we all have insecurities about our bodies, no matter the dress size. If I’m winning, then we’re all winning.”

Tazah: The word “Queen” is very powerful to me. It means unequivocally owning your femininity and projecting it onto the world in your own unique way. Leaving everyone around you infatuated with your presence. QSM: Most people will look at you and say that you are absolutely beautiful, so when you talk about struggles, what are some of the struggles that you face? Tazah: Just because you’re pretty doesn’t mean that you don’t have struggles in life. Lots of people are physically appealing. I dealt with serious self esteem issues when I was younger. I have always been a thick girl, I don’t have one of those “back when I use to be skinny” stories lol. I got teased a lot growing up and I wasn’t that popular with the boys either. I was told that I couldn’t be a majorette in my junior high school marching band because (I quote) “You can’t fit the uniform”. I was passed over for a leading role in my high school musical because the character was one of a starving mother and I didn’t physically fit the character’s profile. I also get the famous “you are cute for a big girl” as if I’m not just cute PERIOD! I struggle to maintain my weight. Cancer and diabetes run in my family so it’s always a thought in my head to make sure that I eat right and live right to maintain my health. I lost my grandparents in 2015 and 2016 as a result of unhealthy living habits and I wish every day that I had more time with them.

QSM: Tazah, how long have you been modeling and how did you get started? Tazah: I have been modeling professionally for about 9 years now. It’s been quite the journey. I started when I came home from college. I saw Sharon Quinn win “Monique’s Fat Chance” and after seeing myself represented on TV in a positive light I knew that I wanted nothing else for myself. I was on a mission to become a model! Then I saw BET’s “Rip the Runway” and they had models on tv that looked like me! This further confirmed what I had to do. So, I took to “MySpace” to find out how to make it happen. Six years later I appeared on BET’s “Rip the Runway”! One of the biggest accomplishments of my life! QSM: One of the things that I have noticed about you through watching you is that you don’t just talk about motivating, you do it. Why is this so important to you? Tazah: Motivating is so important to me because I wouldn’t be in the position to chase my own dreams if it were not for the Queens in my life that motivated me. My mother, aunt and grandmother have all played such a major part in my self confidence. I grew up in a rough neighborhood in NW DC. There weren’t a lot of incentives for doing well in school or anywhere else for that matter. This is why I volunteer my free time to coaching dance, because I can be to others what was rare in my neighborhood growing up. A good influence.

QSM: If you could change some things about the industry you work in, what would they be? Tazah: The first thing I would change about the fashion industry would be the false depiction of what the standard “plus size” woman is. A size 8 is NOT “plus size”. The average woman in this country is between the size 12-16 now. The second thing I would change would be the idea that a “plus size” model should be tall, busty with a small waist and wide hips. If we are truly going to give a voice to every body type in the spectrum through fashion we have to remember that not all women are busty or have big hips or flat stomachs for that matter. I for one am not busty and I am often looked over as a model because of it. If the fashion industry says they are going to be inclusive then let’s really do it. Women are literally killing themselves out here with plastic surgery trying to look like these celebrities that call themselves “thick”. The last thing I would change would be people’s opinions of what sexy is. Why is it that in today’s society the optima of sexy is a thin Victoria Secret model walking down a runway of crushed crystals and glitter with angel wings while if you equivocate sexy to thick you think of some “BBW” on the front of King magazine? Why do we only see intimacy between “physically fit” people in magazines, movies and on TV shows? It’s because today’s society has deemed majority of the country NOT sexy and we fell for it. The industry has tricked us into only having sex with the lights off, shying away from lingerie and being uncomfortable having sexual conversations. We are sexy in the same ways that thinner people are sexy and so much more. Sexy doesn’t always have to mean “BBW” for us. We can be sophisticated and sultry, sensual and seductive, stimulating and submissive without looking like a stripper. We should be promoting that and helping people to own their sexiness through what we produce in main stream media.

QSM: When you hear the word Queen, what does that mean to you?

WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM| NOVEMBER 2017 ISSUE

BUSINESS

14 QSM: You recently made an appearance on TV as a featured model during a segment where they discussed Plus Size Fashion being included in NYFW this year. Tazah: Earlier in my modeling career I appeared on Good Day Philadelphia wearing Torrid (spring/summer). Last year while in Baltimore for Curves Rock Fashion Week I had the opportunity to model Ashley Stewart on Good Morning DC ABC. Most recently as you mentioned I was granted the opportunity to work with celebrity stylist Tamara Lee @boutiquehush for the NYFW segment on Good Day DC where I got to wear my favorite retailer Fashion to Figure! I most certainly have to mention again my appearance on BET’s Rip the Runway the last year that it aired because that is still a very major highlight of my career. To once be inspired by the show and then go on to actually “Rip the Runway” in a Shanda Freeman gown no less, was just mind blowing for me! QSM: You have graced the runways of many fashion shows; do you still get nervous before you hit the runway? Tazah: I actually don’t get nervous before fashion shows because I love the attention lol. I went to a performing arts High school and I have been performing in front of crowds since I was in elementary school. As weird as it sounds, when I’m up on that runway all my insecurities go away. I become who I wish I could be all the time. The Tazah that could care less about what people are thinking and only cares about the fact that she is slaying the house down at this very moment! I must admit that there was a small exception for Full Figured Fashion Week. Sharon Quinn is something like a big deal to me so having her in the wing watching me walk made me the most nervous I have ever been for any show but for that very same reason I had to turn it out because it meant everything to me to make her proud.

designers, models, writers, musicians, singers, dancers, artist, photographers and actors. My vision is that the children that attend these classes are trained to make it in the industry and get hands on training from masters in their art. I want to provide to other children what I was lucky enough to have coming up, an opportunity. QSM: What do you look for in a photographer before booking a shoot with them? Tazah: I look for a lot of things when choosing a photographer. I look at who else they’ve shot. If they have shot with professional models (freelance or agency) that usually means they are pretty good. I look to see if the photographer shoots every model the same. I don’t want my pictures to look anything like anyone else’s. Can they shoot in studio and outside. Variation is something that I look for. Last, I look for pricing lol. Remember you get what you pay for. If the rates are too good to be true and I haven’t seen work from the photographer I will usually pass. You have to invest in your portfolio as a freelance model and I don’t have money to waist. QSM: I thank you for your time. Please provide your final thoughts and/or encouraging words. Please also provide your contact information for anyone wanting to learn more about you or possibly do some work with you. Tazah: I want to just say thank you! Magazines like this give me hope that we are actually making progress in the industry. Real women are being inspired by this publication and owning their Queendom. Remember you are beautiful, you are sexy and you’re a QUEEN! I can be found on Instagram at @ tazahthemodelvixen and Facebook as “Plus Model Tazah Richardson”.

QSM: What three models would you say you aspire to be like? Tazah: Christina Mendez is the first model that comes to mind when I think of models I aspire to be like. She has spent majority of her career as a freelance model and she has been quite successful at it. I am also a freelance model and I have learned from her that it is not always the best decision to get signed to an agency and you can get quality work on your own. Liris Crosse is second on my list because she is seriously making waves in the fashion industry right now with her appearances on Project Runway along with another one of my favorites Monique Robinson. Liris is the queen of staying relevant and models of all sizes can take a few pages out of her book on the subject. The model that I most aspire to be like has to be Tyra Banks. She has become so much more than just a model. She embraced a variety of body types and nationalities on ANTM and was unapologetic about her own weight gain. She has taught me that you can use this platform as a model to impact other peoples’ quality of life in a positive way. Modeling doesn’t have to always be so shallow. QSM: What is your end goal here? Is it to make modeling a career or is it to promote body positivity? Tazah: My end goal is using my platform to open an after school facility that perfects children’s talents in a variety of arts. This facility will be for young MUA’s, hairstylist, WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|NOVEMBER 2017 ISSUE

QSM: What makes you beautiful? Tazah: I’d have to say what makes me beautiful is my ability to see greatness in others and impulsively wanting to nurture and encourage it instead of attempting to snuff it out because of fears that others will out shine me. I have an educator’s spirit. I love to motivate others to be passionate about their talents. I guess that’s why I enjoy coaching so much.

Can stress cause hair loss?

Yes it can, stress and hair loss can be related. Three types of hair loss that can be associated with high stress levels are: • Telogen effluvium. In telogen effluvium (TEL-ojun uh-FLOO-vee-um), significant stress pushes large numbers of hair follicles into a resting phase. Within a few months, affected hairs might fall out suddenly when simply combing or washing your hair. • Trichotillomania. Trichotillomania (trik-o-tilo-MAY-nee-uh) is an irresistible urge to pull out hair from your scalp, eyebrows or other areas of your body. Hair pulling can be a way of dealing with negative or uncomfortable feelings, such as stress, tension, loneliness, boredom or frustration. • Alopecia areata. A variety of factors are thought to cause alopecia areata (al-o-PEEshe-uh ar-e-A-tuh), possibly including severe stress. With alopecia areata, the body’s immune system attacks the hair follicles — causing hair loss.

Stress and hair loss don’t have to be permanent. If you get your stress under control, your hair might grow back. Stress management gives you a range of tools to reset your alarm system. It can help your mind and body adapt (resilience). Without it, your body might always be on high alert. Over time, chronic stress can lead to serious health problems. Don’t wait until stress damages your health, relationships or quality of life. Start practicing stress management techniques today. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle will help you manage stress and hair loss. Eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly and get enough sleep. Make a conscious effort to spend less time in front of a screen — television, tablet, computer and phone — and more time relaxing. Always speak and have a relationship with your stylist. If you notice sudden or patchy hair loss or more than usual hair loss when combing or washing your hair, talk to your doctor. Sudden hair loss can signal an underlying medical condition that requires treatment. If needed, your doctor might also suggest treatment options for your hair loss. And as always DRINK YOUR WATER AND TAKE YOUR VITAMINS!!!!

FEATURED STORY

Blessing Tate

B

lessing Tate, a native of New York City and mother of two beautiful daughters, Heaven and Skye. Not only does she have one of the toughest jobs in the world (being a mom), she is also a Navy Veteran, a Student, a retired Football Player, a Master Barber/ Loctician, she’s a Makeup Artist and a Model.

As a US Navy Veteran having served her country for over five years in the areas of Navigation and Transportation, Blessing had the opportunity to see so much of the world, and it has definitely shaped her as an individual. Upon completing her military service, she found it difficult to adjust to civilian life and had longed to be a part of something bigger than herself. This desire led her to be enthusiastically involved in Woman Professional Football, where she played for over fourteen years. This year Blessing has retired from the sport; she says she is happy that she’s embarked on that journey because it has kept her young and has given her more of a competitive edge. After serving her country, she chose to intern in the areas photography, hair, and makeup; this is where her love of helping people feel good about themselves became a passion. She is now a Master Barber Stylist, Loctician, and Makeup Artist. Weirdly enough, after five years in the military, fourteen years of football, and running a barber shop, a woman can only look herself in the mirror and want to feel more like a lady, this is where the modeling came into play. “I mean if you don’t invest in yourself, you’ll never see the return!” Blessing’s love for the fashion side of the runway began in Houston, Texas. Although she has a background in modeling hair shows and competitions, she felt like a bit of an outsider since her ”cat walk” was different, not bad just different. She casted for her first major fashion show, Big Girls Rock II a little over a year ago, she says it was a great feeling being on the runway, but she still felt like the underdog. Her thoughts looking at the other women were that they were beautiful, they had grace, and she wanted to be them. But she knew she had her work cut out for

her. She practiced and practiced, at least until she made it look easy anyway. She gained redemption walking in the next few shows which included Fashionable and Thick, National Curves Day 2016, and on several occasions as a Unique Blend Models DIVA led by CEO and Model Coordinator Ms. Andrene Williams. All this upon moving to NYC, and from there you couldn’t keep Blessing away from the runway. Since then her passion for this industry has grown tremendously. She strongly believes that it’s more than just fashion or the runway, but about the movement; THE CURVY MOVEMENT. Her hopes are to put a small dent in this movement by organizing to make a difference, perhaps being a role model for the next generation, since they seem to be the most affected by society’s stereotypes in thinking that one size fits all. Confidence is contagious; this is something that we need to spread, with the hope of making a change. Every day is a learning experience for Blessing, from model training with Aushia Smith of the The Rѐussir School in DC, to networking and building professional relationships. This new-found love of self is what empowers her. Doubt has been replaced with confidence, the same confidence that enabled her to compete in and win the 2017 Face of Kurvacious Model Competition. “It felt like I won the super bowl to be honest.” Though they were guided with ease by Ms. Tiff Scott and her team of industry experts, Blessing says that it still was not easy, but feels that having the self-assurance that all of the contestants all possess already made them all winners in her book.

QSM: Where do we start here? What haven’t you done yet? You definitely are every woman. Take me back to your younger years. How and where did you grow up? Blessing: Unfortunately, I can’t say my life as a child was a picket fence. My father died when I was 5 and my mom at 11. I was adopted by my aunt and from there my life was an uphill battle. I experienced so much of life even at a young age...I was born in Brooklyn, and raised BTW the upper west side and Bronx. QSM: What stimulated your desire to join the Navy? Blessing: Actually the Air Force was my first choice. I decided on the Navy because I love to travel and I knew I would get to see more of the world. QSM: What was your experience like as a woman in the Navy? Blessing: In any male-dominated industry, women have to work extra hard to prove themselves. As a woman in the Navy every day for me was a struggle. QSM: How old are your daughters and did they come before or after your Navy days? Blessing: I have two girls, Heaven and Sky. Heaven is 15 and sky is 3. Heaven was born upon leaving the military. QSM: Let’s go back to when you left the Navy. Why did you leave? And you talked about finding it difficult to adjust to civilian life when you left; what was so difficult about it? Blessing: I left the Navy right after 9/11 because I was pregnant and a soon-to-be mother. I found it difficult to adjust to civilian life because, the civilian workforce lacked discipline and work ethic. QSM: I am sure I speak for everyone when I say that we salute you for protecting our country. Let’s talk about football. Football Blessing? Lol. How? Why? Lol Who did you play for? Blessing: Yes, Football lol. Tell me about it... when I started playing I had no idea WHAT I was doing. I actually started playing in Miami in 2004, and after my very first season I came home to NYC where I then played for the NY sharks, and the rest was history.

QSM: Reading your story, I see so much progression in you as a person. You are definitely not afraid of change. When you decided to step into modeling did you do so to help you feel more lady-like, or did you really want to become a model? Blessing: I would have to say both. I was into hair shows before fashion...and we both know they’re not the same. So when I got into fashion it became a passion and I actually felt differently, I definitely felt more like a lady. QSM: Did you think you’d make it this far? Blessing: Honestly the only thing I ever thought is if I worked hard at it, something would come out of it. QSM: Who taught you how to do makeup? You are a beast with those brushes! Blessing: I began my career in the areas of makeup, hair, and photography while working at Glamour Shots...this is where my passion began.

31

QSM: In your opinion, how does one find that confidence? Blessing: Confidence is like a seed that needs to be planted. All of us within the curvy community need not only think about ourselves, but about those that we inspire. I’m a firm believer that confidence is contagious. If our peers along with our next generation bear witness to all the positive things, than perhaps maybe they will see that’s it’s okay to be curvy and beautiful!!! QSM: I don’t know that there are anymore untapped markets out there for you left, but what is next for you Blessing? Blessing: I’m currently pursuing my BS in Environmental Science @ Medgar Evers. Stay tuned! QSM: I see so much potential in you. Please keep up the great work and remain humble.

QSM: Is there anyone that inspired you to get into modeling? Which models do you look up to? Blessing: Yes, his name is Armani Davon, hair Stylist, barber, model, and my mentor. As far as models, I look up to; it would have to be...Petite Curvy Model, Designer, and Model Coach Jeannie Ferguson. As far as being A model, designer and coach, she is the epitome of hard work, determination and professionalism. I learned this while working with her during training for the Face of Kurvacious model competition 2017. QSM: I have talked with a few models who have revealed their stories of body shaming. Has this ever happened to you? Blessing: I can honestly say that I have never gone through body shaming as an adult, although as a young adult in Junior High School I was teased by my peers. They talked about my nose and my full lips, which I now considered to be my more fabulous features..lol QSM: So Ms. Kurvacious, you felt like you’d won the super bowl? Lol. Was this your first competition as a model? Blessing: Yes, it was my first model competition, but I will not say it will be my last. QSM: This is a question that I usually ask most people; what are three changes that you would like to see change in this industry... Blessing: First, more community outreach amongst the plus/curvy community. Second, and third, we need to continue making strides in the change regarding industry standards and the plus and or curvy community.

WHO IS ANDREA BLASSINGAME? QSM: Well hello Ms. Blassingame. Let’s just clear the air (again); are you related to the Editor in Chief? Andrea: LOL! While I always think it a compliment, there is no blood relation that we are aware of. I would love to have those bragging rights; however, there is no proof that we are. QSM: Let’s talk pageantry and modeling. How do they differ or are they one in the same? Andrea: Pageantry and modeling certainly are two different entities, however, because both fields share the same outcome (to articulately represent a brand fiercely and beautifully), the two go hand-in-hand most cases. The trainings for both may be quite similar at times, and one may lead to the other, as in my case. QSM: Which one came first for you? Andrea: Pageantry came first for me. I was encouraged to compete in 2014 and won my very first title as Ms. Blessed Bold & Beautiful 2015. As a prize, I was automatically entered into the Big Beautiful Women Pageant International of 2015, so I’d decided to continue to compete. The trainings were certainly geared toward modeling industry success, and I’d decided to pursue that as well. Through rigorous workshops in preparation for the Miss Full-Figured USA Pageant 2015, and the connections that were being made for contestants with fashion and modeling industry professionals, I was confident that I could possibly be successful at it. I’d quickly developed a love for modeling and have decided to make it a career choice. You see, as a beauty pageant contestant and Queen one must be poised and graceful, willing to work and serve, and show a bright and engaging personality while connecting with all types of people, and of course be able to walk a runway fiercely. The same is required of models as we represent various designer wares and brands both on the runway and editorially. QSM: Normally I meet models that do acting or pageantry, but you do all three. How do they all tie into each other? Or do they? Andrea: Modeling, acting and pageantry all connect in wonderful ways. Through public appearances and brand recognition, to stage presence and presentation the overlap between the three is significant. Once I’d learned that I could pursue each of my passions simultaneously, I’d began to feel fulfillment like never before. Normally, you would meet people who would do either or. Please note, I am NOT normal; and I prefer it that way! QSM: AND you are a makeup artist! You are doing a lot over there Ms. Lady. But they do say that all millionaires have multiple streams of revenue. I have seen your work as an MUA and you do great work. What inspired you to get into doing makeup? Andrea: Well, thank you, thank you! I absolutely LOVE being a makeup artist! I have “been into it” since my senior prom and into college, however, I have been freelancing officially for two years now. After a life changing accident in 2014 I had a great deal of free time and chose to study makeup artistry in preparation for my first pageant competition. Others began inquiring about my services and I decided to begin to take it seriously as a business. I am fulfilled and continue to learn and grow. I am hopeful to add celebrity clients and major events and publications to my credits.

QSM: Congratulations on the launch of your The Literacy Empowerment Initiative. Please tell everyone a little about the initiative and how they, too, can be a part of it. Andrea: Thank you so much, it means a great deal to be able to bring awareness to something I have been passionate about and have dreamt of for years. The Literacy Empowerment Initiative is an intergenerational endeavor incorporating a photo campaign, literacy fair, and oratory contest aiming to promote reading and writing in the urban community. Photos from our photo campaign will be compiled into a 2018 calendar and arrangements are also being made to have several of them featured in various store fronts throughout the Philadelphia area. By partnering with a few non-profit organizations locally, the initiative is also incorporating a literacy workshop for families hoping to roll out a curriculum before the end of this year. Whether you are from the Philadelphia area or another urban community, you are welcome to connect with us and be featured in one of our upcoming photo shoots for future campaign endeavors. Please like our page on Facebook and Instagram @LiteracyEmpowerment, and be sure to visit our website for updates and volunteer opportunities (www. literacyempowerment.weebly.com). Anyone who has photos of themselves, reading, writing, or publically speaking, we’d love to share them on our social media and website for the campaign. Just tag us and be sure to use the hashtags #IREAD #WEREAD #LITERACYEMPOWERMENT.

Plus 2018 Queen at the Lehigh Valley/Philadelphia modeling competition in August 2017, and am preparing now to compete for the national title in December 2017. I am learning to build relationships and connect with various photographers and modeling groups to grow and expand my portfolio every day. So, stay tuned!

QSM: Why was this so important to you? Andrea: Dealing with a growing rate of illiterate adults in both the fashion and visual arts fields, I knew something needed to be done. Many don’t realize that they have a problem and others simply ignore it. I wanted people to know that there are plenty of resources to help overcome this issue and help is available. I have always appreciated reading and writing and excelled as a child. I’ve earned my bachelors degree from Albright College majoring in Political Science and English because I knew I wanted to firm foundation for my professional career. While you don’t have to be as passionate about it as I am, it is necessary for a professional career, and in everyday life.

QSM: final thoughts. Andrea: I am truly excited for the professional development I am personally experiencing right now. I am making changes in my life that will help me to focus on my enterprise and all I have to offer as a model, actress, makeup artist, and civic servant. Andrea Enterprises will officially launch in 2018! #staytuned.

QSM: As an aspiring model, please tell us about some of the shows you have had the pleasure of walking in and some of the people you have been blessed to work with. Andrea: Well, I’d actually had my first modeling experience as an actor and model as part of The Legends on the Red Carpet, Black History Month production and service in Philadelphia in 2015. I am honored to have been selected as an honorary model for Top Line Divas at a show in New York in the fall of 2015, as well. In the beginning of 2016 I officially became an independent model with Queen Size Model Management and am so grateful for the opportunity to be trained by and work with such a phenomenal organization. My very first magazine features may be found in fashion articles featured in Queen Size Magazine September and December 2016 issues. In February 2017 I was featured as a model in The Philadelphia Black Diamond Extravaganza, orchestrated by Jazzo Williams – The Media King. I am proud to have modeled for several designers at that event including Stephanie Cain (Zinman Furs), Sharon McTyson (Jade Couture). After an extensive boot camp training program, I was also featured as a model and makeup artist in the Royal Fashion Show produced by The Sisterhood Project, LLC., in April 2017, and continue to work with the group. I was afforded the opportunity to serve as a makeup artist during Full Figured Fashion Week, and hope to return in 2018. Most recently, I was crowned the Miss Fashion Week Philadelphia

QSM: When I say Queen what does that mean to you? Andrea: Queen is not simply a title, but a state of mind! A Queen is not perfect, yet she strives for perfection each day. A Queen is not the best at everything, but she gives her best at everything. A true Queen is poised, kind, considerate, approachable, friendly, humorous, charismatic, confident, consistent, intelligent, strong, creative, humble, and free. She is stylish, well groomed, and stands out in a crowd. It is my goal to be a Queen in every area of my life, to show such characteristics in all I do and to all whom I come in contact with. As I learn her every day, I adopt #QUEENSTATUS = a Queenly state of mind.

QSM: You have been in this modeling game for a little while now. What changes have you seen from when you started to now? Tanisha: Changes I’ve seen since I started modeling over five years ago are plus size models being represented in main stream media, plus size models walking the runway during NYFW, and plus size models on Project Runway. QSM: What got you started? Tanisha: My family and friends always commented on how I had such a pretty smile and someone put the idea in my head I should model. At first I laughed because I thought I’m not skinny or light enough to be a model because that’s what I see. When I started to do my research I saw how wrong I was and was introduced to an industry that I didn’t know existed and it ignited something in me. I wanted to see more women who liked like me in mainstream media so my journey started. QSM: If my memory serves me correctly, you also are a pageant Queen? Tanisha: You are correct I was Miss New York Plus USA in 2014. QSM: Now what made you entered into a pageant? I have noticed that this is the big thing now with models. Tanisha: I saw it as an opportunity to expand my platform and thought that it would advance my career as a plus size model. QSM: You’re pretty modest in your bio missy. You have had some major successes in your journey. Tell us about some of these TV appearances and campaigns. Tanisha: LOL! Ok so for a bit I did quite a bit of background work. I’ve been an extra in movies like The Amazing Spiderman and Top 5. I’ve done television shows like The Breaks, Law & Order, The Following, and Quantico. I’ve modeled on Curvy Brides and did an infomercial for Genie Hourglass Waist Trainer. Last year I shot with photographer Bruna Lacerda for her I Choose Me campaign and she displayed her work this year at an Art Gallery in Hoboken which was an amazing experience. QSM: I have also seen you on the cover of some novels. Tell us a little about that because I don’t think that is an area that models really think about tapping into. Tanisha: I’m a freelance model so I’m always looking for opportunities. I came across a post a few years ago looking for an African American plus size model for a book cover. I got connected with Taria Reed and from there I’ve been immersed into the world of romance novels. It was an area I wasn’t familiar with and as with anything I do my research. Romance novels is a booming industry and there are many successful authors. There is a genre for plus size heroines however authors sometimes have trouble finding models for their covers so you’ll see a lot of covers that don’t depict the character correctly so there is definitely a need there.

QSM: You trying to hold back on us Tanisha. Are you this modest with your dancing too? Lol. Am I correct when I say you do praise dance at your church? How long have you been in dance ministry? Tanisha: Lol! I love to dance I’ve been dancing since around the age of 6 or 7 but yes I praise dance at my church. I’ve praised dance at my church for about the past 20 years. Wow! That’s a long time lol! QSM: Praise dancing is my soft spot; that gets me in the spirit each and every time. I may have to pay you a visit and see what you about over there. Lol Tanisha: LOL! Please do. QSM: PCOS; why is this so dear to you? Please elaborate Tanisha: PCOS is dear to me because I was diagnosed with it around the age of 20. I’m not as vocal about it as I would like to be but when I have the chance I use my platform to promote awareness and educate. I let my diagnosis defeat me in the beginning my mind was plagued with so many questions: will I get diabetes? Can I have children? If I can’t have children who will marry me? If I can help a woman or teen not go through that and let her know there’s hope and she’s not alone then my job is done. That’s why it’s so dear to me. QSM: You dropped out of the model scene for a little while; why? Tanisha: Honestly, I dropped out the scene for a while because I started second guessing myself. The plus size industry has come a long way however the most successful models look a certain way body type wise. I don’t have a small waist, wide hips, I’m brown skin, and I don’t have any exotic features that would cause me to stand out. I thought to myself who am I kidding so I shifted my focus into finishing school and trying to work on my career ,so I put modeling on the back burner and just focused on that. By doing that though I kind of “let myself go” I put on a few pounds and that was like icing on the cake; I thought “you can’t model now, you don’t even look like you do in your pictures”. What got me out of that funk was just learning to love myself inside and out again which is still a task and picking my dream up off the shelf. I’ve still got a few good years left in me lol!

QSM: Well I am glad to see you back and look forward to seeing more of you. Tell everyone where they can find you please. Tanisha: I would just like to say when I was ready to give up I entered the 2017 QSM House Model Search on a whim. I actually didn’t think I would win but when I did it helped me keep my pulse on the modeling world and it helped bring me back so I want to publicly thank you again for this opportunity.
