ARTICLE TITLE | BY AUTHOR MAKING QUEEN SIZE MOVES

Note from the Editor Welcome to the October 2015 issue of Queen Size Magazine. As you all know, our October issues are always dedicated to helping to raise Breast Cancer Awareness. This issue goes out to everyone that has ever had a scare, all of the survivors, all those that have lost their lives and the support systems. The statistics of 1 in 8 are extremely scary to me. This is why we have to watch out for one another and make sure that we are all well educated; make sure that we are reminding each other to self examinate and get those mammograms. We are dying at alarming numbers; but together we can continue to raise the awareness and stress the importance of taking care of our bodies. I have a co-worker in my office that will randomly walk over to our desks and ask if we took our mammograms yet. If any one of us replies no, then she will remind us every week. As annoying as she becomes, it made me make that appointment and I appreciate it.

Alicia Nicole

Alicia Nicole, of Baltimore, MD, has always had a passion and eye for fashion. Usually standing out in crowd, due to her style and curves, she was often told that she should model! Doubting her opportunities, Alicia played it safe by being behind the scenes, sketching outfits/costumes worn her fashionette friends in her high school fashion shows (Western High School). Many of her designs also came to life and debuted at few JR/ SR proms. It wasn’t until her 27th birthday, April 25, 2010, that Alicia Nicole mustered up the courage to face an entire panel of judges for the ”Curves R Us” - A Women of Size model call. What greater gift, than to open an email saying ”CONGRATS, you’ve been chosen to model in our show!!!” Within a year of pursuing her modeling career, Alicia was chosen to be 1, of 2 models, to be the face of the curvy line for Baltimore’s own House of Descai. She stylishly graced the runways from hair shows to BET’s 2nd Annual Women Defined Summit: Fashion FunkShon Show. Catching the eyes of talented clothing and jewelry designers, fellow full-figured models and outstanding photographers, Alicia Nicole has been blessed to work with some of the best! The words of a loyal photographer once shared with her, has influenced Alicia to carry this motto: ”Aspire to Inspire, before you Expire.” WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|OCTOBER 2015 ISSUE

QUEEN SIZE MAGAZINE PRESENTS

“To Answer Your Question” By SHIRLEY BEALE

LET SLEEPING DOGS LIE OR WAKE THEM UP? Question: Hello Shirley. I have been living a lie for the last 12 years. I have been married for the last 10 years. I had an affair with one of my ex boyfriends before we got married and I don’t believe that my 12 year old daughter is my husband’s. She looks nothing like him and looks everything like my ex. My husband and I were out one day and we bumped into my ex; ironically, our daughter was with us at the time. Both my husband and my ex had this look on their face as they looked at my daughter. They both looked at me questionably and I acted as I didn’t notice. My husband was acting strange for about a week until he finally came out and asked the question that I knew was coming. “Is our daughter his”? I lied and told him that our daughter was his. I even agreed to a lie detector test without hesitation. I think the fact that I was so quick to agree kind of made him change his mind. But this is bothering me and I am not sure what I should do. Do I let sleeping dogs lie or do I fess up and tell my husband the truth; that there is a possibility that his precious angel may not be his? Signed Regretfully Confused. SHIRLEY’S RESPONSE: Well Confused, I’ve heard this situation more times than you would imagine. I know I will get just as many against my advice as those that are in agreement. Since the 3 of you think the resemblance is so strong, the possibility of your ex boyfriend being the child’s father is probably higher than you would hope. Depending on the relationship between you and your husband, I would talk to him. Tell him what you suspect, especially since seeing your ex and your daughter side by side. If your husband is fine with accepting that he may not be the biological father, then I would leave it at that and move forward. If the decision is made to have a blood test to find out who is and is not the father, I would include your husband in the decision planning every step of the way. He obviously loves this child and may continue to love her even though he may find out it’s not biological. As far as your ex boyfriend, if he is the type of man that would be willing to play a father role but still give your husband the respect of being the stepfather since the child lives with you and your husband, then you may be able to let him know if he turns out to be the bio dad. However, should your daughter turn out to be the child of your ex boyfriend, if the 3 of you cannot co-mingle and raise this child, I would keep the information to myself or give ex boyfriend visitation if he

WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|OCTOBER 2015 ISSUE

desires it. However, if you decide to let sleeping dogs lie and don’t move forward, you better hope your ex doesn’t show up at any of your family or husband’s family functions because if the resemblance of your daughter and your ex boyfriend is that obvious, then your “sleeping dogs “ will be kicked multiple times in the side. Madea will be saying, “There’s a dead cat somewhere on the line”. Uncle Bo Bo will whisper to your husband, “So you know that there chile’ look like that boy over yonder, right?” Your nieces will be playing with your daughter and if they have an argument about whose turn it is to jump rope, you just know one will blurt out, “It’s my turn to jump rope”. Your daughter will say, “No. It’s mine”. Your niece will say, “Fine. Take your stupid turn. That’s why that ain’t yo real daddy no way”. And lastly, your husband’s brother who probably always liked you may say, “you mean I could hit that but you let dude hit it?” Bottom line, keep ex away if you want your sleeping dogs to stay asleep.

MOMMA’S BOY CAUGHT BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE Question: Hello Shirley. My mom has been living with me in my two bedroom apartment for the past 5 years. Everything has been fine until my fiancé’ moved in. The two of them don’t agree on anything at all. My mom wants my fiancé out of the house and my fiancé wants us to move elsewhere. I don’t want to move and I feel bad telling my mom to leave. I try not to take sides and when I don’t, they both tell me that I am. I just want peace in my house; how am I supposed to make them both happy? Signed, Momma’s boy. SHIRLEY’S RESPONSE: Momma’s Boy, Grow up. I can completely understand you are caught between your mom and your fiancé however you can never have two women of the house no matter how large the house is. If you choose your fiancé’s side, your mom will be hurt and we should never want to hurt mom. If you choose your mom’s side, the “hard place” I spoke about in the title may be the only “hard” thing you experience for awhile. I’m just sayin’. Since your house is an apartment, you definitely have problems. I will offer you a few suggestions. Since you are in an apartment, I would rent another apartment in the building so that you and your fiancé can have the privacy you need as a couple and she can be the woman of that house and then you can visit your mom as often as you wish where she can have her son and be the woman of her

TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION | BY SHIRLEY BEALE

own house at the same time. You are in the same building but different places with the two women you love. Each woman needs her space and time with you. If you choose to stay in the same apartment with both women, then your fiancé should be understanding and realize that you love your mom and just try and get along. Additionally, your mom has to realize that you are a grown man and that you have your own separate life and a woman that wants and needs you also. If you don’t feel that either situation will work, then I say PUT YOUR FOOT DOWN. Tell your mom and girlfriend that the next time they argue, you will put them both in a time out because you will not tolerate it. Tell them both to SHUT UP, SIT DOWN, ACT MATURE OR YOU WILL SLAP THE TASTE OUT OF THEIR MOUTHS!!!!!. After you do that, please let me know what hospital you are in so I and the staff of Queen Size Magazine can send you a Get Well card and flowers. (I don’t advise you take the last suggestion. :) )

If that doesn’t wash, then come up with a new dish that you know is Kick-Behind-Delicious and soon they may forget about your signature dish that really wasn’t yours anyway. As far as your husband is concerned, I’m sure you can find “many” ways to make him forget about the dish that you won’t be preparing any longer. Happy Cooking.

WHEN IS ENOUGH ENOUGH? Question: How do you know when enough is enough? When you’ve had all you can take? When it’s time to take your marbles and go home? Signed: Cup Running Over? SHIRLEY’S RESPONSE: How do you know when you’ve had enough? Answer: When the solutions to your problem are not legal and could land you in jail. !!!!!

COOKING UP A LIE Question: Shirley, Please help me. I have been taking the same dish to my husband’s family gathering for years. I let them assume that I cooked it but I actually had someone to fix it for me. Now that person has moved out of town and they are expecting me to bring the dish. I can’t tell them that I had not been preparing the dish all these years. My husband doesn’t even know I haven’t been cooking this dish. What should I do? SHIRLEY’S RESPONSE: I would say you’ve got yourself in a pot of hot water. You have two choices. You can come clean and tell them that because of your schedule, you had someone else to prepare the dish and that person has moved away. OR you could ask the person for the recipe along with step by step instructions. Practice it over and over until you get it right. If it doesn’t come out the way you want, tell everyone at the family gathering you substituted an ingredient for a healthier choice but it tastes different. That will give you more time to practice it before the next gathering.

WORKING ON A BETTER YOU ..............................................

by NATALIE DAWN

Usually when January 1st comes around we all have goals we tend to work on and work towards for the New Year, and most of us fall off our goals about 3 months into the New Year. I challenge you to a “PreNew Year resolution.” Ask yourself what goals do you want to accomplish before the end of the year? What projects have you started and not finished? Do you have any weight loss goals? Give yourself something to work towards. Get your pen and paper and get ready to write. We are going to come up with a plan to work on becoming a “Better YOU” and pick up where we left off with some of our New Year resolutions; we still have time to work on or fulfill those resolutions. Sometimes we need daily reminders, so if you need to prepare yourself to set an alarm, write post it notes or leave reminders in regularly visited places like the car, bathroom or bedroom. This guide is to give you 10 ideas to start working towards an improved you. Let’s get started!

WORKING ON A BETTER YOU | BY NATALIE DAWN

15

What are some goals you would like to accomplish before the year is over? Think about the goal and work backwards what are the steps needed to reach these goals?

What steps can you take to be in a better mental, physical and emotional state?

How can you “give back”?

What is your purpose? Have you figured it out yet? If not take some time to work on learning about yourself.

Who is on your TEAM? Who are people who really support you and love you? (Make sure you show them your appreciation for them)

What is one thing you can do every day to help better yourself?

Learn as much as you can about your craft, hobby or even something that interest you.

Feed your mind with positive thoughts. There are so many ways to do this nowadays, positive quote apps, support groups, church, positive people in your life, find a mentor, YouTube videos, streaming inspirational stations, the list goes on.

Find an accountability partner. Someone who can let you know when you’re of track or who can help you get back on track and vice versa.

Take some time during the day that is just dedicated to you to just relax, debrief, and let your brain rest; pray, clear your thoughts or whatever it may be for you. It could be time not disturbed by your children, family or friends. Take a moment to just breathe. The greatest asset we have in life is time. Once it is used it cannot be taken back or returned. Sometimes we get consumed or distracted by the thousands of things going on around us and never spend enough time to even take a moment to just breathe, enjoy the sun, smell the air, or admire the sky. Our well-being is important to be able to efficiently do the task before us. So take care of yourself and spend time on YOU, You deserve it! WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM| OCTOBER 2015 ISSUE

INTERVIEW WITH TRACEY RHYMES | BY TAWANA BLASSINGAME

Tawana : Tracey, when I laid eyes on this product I was in awe because I have never seen anything like it. Pure brilliance. How did you come up with such an idea? Tracey: In late 2013 I began experiencing something that all women experience, my shoes slipping off of my feet, this was happening daily with every pair I wore. Tawana: I foresee this product being a HUGE hit with women. How long have you been sitting on the idea and what steps did you take to get started? Tracey: Yes I agree it is becoming very popular, Well I must go back a little, after my shoes began to fall off of my feet, I took about 50 pairs of shoes to the shoe maker for him to sew straps on and they were hideous, that’s when the idea hit and it hit hard, I went and purchased some leather and some jewels and began the measuring process, the hardest part of this idea was what to use to hold the shoes securely on the foot. Tawana: You mentioned that these straps help prevent women from slipping and sliding in their shoes; how does that work? Tracey: The shoe straps are clip-ons that I have had modified in a way so that they will securely hold the shoe on. Tawana: Tell me about life as an entrepreneur. Many people are uncomfortable taking the step. They think that you have to sign over your life and your first born for collateral. Can you share some advice on how one can get started? Tracey: Life as an entrepreneur is great, it is not as hard as one may think, if God has given you an idea, go for it he will not lead you down the wrong path. It doesn’t take money because I didn’t have money but I had an idea. I’ve learned to listen to that small voice that says, Tracey go make shoe straps, I’ll be with with you, and I knew that to be true and I believed it and had the faith to move forward without the fear that holds us back. Do be afraid to chase your dreams. Tawana: Where do your funds come from to produce your products? Tracey: My funds came from tax returns and my 401k, I realized early on if you want it bad enough you will do whatever it takes to get you started. Tawana: Your product is now available in a very popular store now; congratulations on that. Can you share the name of the store and where it is located for the readers? How did you make that possible? Tracey: Yessss, my product is now in Konstantine fur shop, one of the worlds largest fur manufacture in the world, you can find

21

Konstantine on 29th Street and 7th Avenue in the fur district in New York City. My journey into getting into Konstantine was easy, you have to network and meet like minded people, I became friends with Angela Stokes, Angela is called the fur lady here in New York, she made a call, we meet with the owner and history was made, one of the exciting meetings I have ever had and the results were “put the straps in the window” they will also be incorporating SAPHYA shoe straps on some of the furs, what a blessing. Tawana: Are you in anymore stores or working out any deals? You have to be because all you have to do is slap this product on a table and it will sell itself. Tracey: Yes, I am working out some deals now to get into some upscale shoe store, so watch out for us were coming. Tawana: How many different styles and colors do you offer? Tracey: I have 24 different styles and 4 different colors, I just made two additional colors, purple and metallic beautiful. Tawana: What do you do for a living Tracey? Tracey: I am an administrative assistant at the largest beverage company in the world. Tawana: I am in love with these shoe straps and I encourage everyone to purchase them to dress up their shoes. Where can people purchase your shoe straps? Tracey: I am online @www.saphya.com Tawana: What can we look forward to from you Tracey? Tracey: I am working on some new straps, and new uses for these straps so look out for that. Also you will see me in New York Fashion Week in September 2015. Please check out my facebook to see where SAPHYA will be next. FB: Saphya Shoe Straps Instagram @saphya_shoestraps, I also have a gofundme.com/saphyashoestraps, please donate as I am trying to take my company to the next level and helping women of domestic violence, my passion is to not only help women with their shoes but with their life. Tawana: Good luck to you and I know I will be seeing you around. Tracey: I would like to thank you guys for your support and your kind words, many blessings to you all.

CHEAP SHOES EXPENSIVE ISSUES By Tawana Blassingame

I know you all read that topic and said to yourselves, where is she going with this. Well I am going where no one has gone before; to the truth about cheap shoes. When people hear cheap shoes they automatically think of price and that is not the case. You are talking to someone who knows how to shop on a budget. I don’t care how much money I have, there is a certain high that I get when I get things on sale; and when I can use some additional coupons on top of that sale, oh I am in sale heaven. But this article is not about sales so let’s get back on topic. When I say cheap I am referring to the quality of the shoe. This is written especially for but not limited to the models in the industry. First and foremost I am going to just go on record and say that wearing heels are just bad for us; they cause all sorts of foot problems; especially heels over 3 inches. If you really think about the logistics of it you will understand that you are hyper extending your foot and putting all of your weight on the ball of your foot. Imagine what that is going to do to you over time. Have you ever heard of Achilles tendinitis? When the heel is frequently in a high-heel shoe, it can cause the Achilles tendon (which connects the calf muscle to the heel bone) to tighten. When you kick off your shoes and the heel comes down to the floor at the end of the day, the extra stretching of the tendon can lead to a condition called Achilles tendinitis. This is quite painful and will make you ask yourself is it even worth

it. As models and even fashionable women, some would say yes because of the age old saying “beauty is pain”; I beg to differ in this case because there is nothing worse than having your feet hurt. It leads to a whole domino effect of issues such as back pain, neck pain, leg pain, finger pain; ok that was an exaggeration but if you have ever had some real foot pain then you understand that everything hurts right along with it. It’s almost as if everything is connected to your foot at that time. You really want to make sure that you are buying and wearing comfortable shoes. If your shoes do not come with arch protection then you need to make sure that you invest in some shoe pads with arches. You do not want that pain in your life, trust me. I know many women who have lost the arches in their feet because of this and the pain they describe is unbearable. I am no podiatrist but I can read. I read on different sites that it is recommended to those that want to wear heals to try to even out the weight on your foot as much as possible. That’s where the heels with platforms come into play; take a look at this pretty pink shoe. That’s a nice shoe isn’t it? Take notice of how high the heel is and ask yourself this; what if that platform wasn’t there? Imagine how much you have to extend your foot to get into that shoe, imagine all that weight going to the front of your foot. After a while it has to feel like you tip toeing on concrete all day.

CHEAP SHOES, EXPENSIVE ISSUES

Here are a few tips that I have learned when searching for comfortable shoes. 1. Your shoes should have some flexibility. You want to be able to bend the shoe a little to ensure that it will bend with you when you walk. Stiff shoes hurt. 2. IF you are going to buy those pointy toed shoes make sure that you have enough room for your toes and that they are not squashed together. You should not have to buy your shoes extra big to accomplish this. If you do then put those shoes back on the shelf because they obviously were not made by someone who knows shoes. 3. Your shoe should have some cushion or padding in the ball area. Otherwise you are going to feel like you are walking on the ground. 4. Although the prices sound pretty nice, you want to try to avoid the synthetic shoes. Invest in the leathers, suedes and/or fabric uppers. These materials breathe and lesson the chances of your feet blistering.

You can certainly look beautiful without killing your feet. Of course there is really no way to avoid pain in your feet altogether because no matter what you wear, if you are on your feet all day your feet will more than likely hurt; even in sneakers. However, you should be trying to take care of your feet as much as possible because you never know how important they are until you can’t use them.

Traces Of My Pen By: Amanda Tucciarone

It seems like just yesterday summer had began, Although it’s all packed up and ready to leave againAllowing Fall to work its magic on the world. No more Sun tans and pool time, Ice cream every night; T-shirts and denim shorts, And no more sleeping in late because schools approaching quickly. Goodbye warm windy nights, And hello cooler days. Adios to those worn out, ruined flip flops, And hello tennis shoes and sneakers; Oh my… Summer has come to an end. The leaves are changing colors again, And the animals are playing hide instead of seek. The sun is going to bed earlier, And birds are sleeping in a little longer as they search for their new homes; Summer has come to an end. The temperature is dropping slowly at a time, And the ice cream man is riding around in that giant truck of love to finish up the season. Now we can go back to wearing our blue jeans and sweatshirts, And those brand new boots and hats we just had to have; Summer has come to an end. Its time to get back on a regular schedule: Shop for new crayons and pencilsAnd pens and paper. Empty the pool and put away the toys, But don’t leave behind those glow-in-the dark goggles you won… Because summer has come to an end. And for all of those who are as excited as I am, Its time for school again! The kids go back, The younger siblings go back… Leaving all the good food, still in the fridge waiting for you. Isn’t summer just as fun when it ends, as it is when it begins?
