FROM THE EDITOR Tawana Blassingame Founder & Editor in Chief
Welcome to the October 2017 issue of Queen Size Magazine. At this point everyone should have already shopped the fall trends. Y’all know this is my favorite time of the year; sweater dresses and boots. These never go out of style for me. Prints made an appearance this summer and it looks like it is sticking around through the fall as well. I just scored some amazing floral sweater dresses from The Avenue, which by the way has become one of my favorites. In this issue we have featured some fall trends from Torrid and Charlotte Russe so be sure to check them out, and be sure to let us know what your favorite fall trends are by tagging #queensizemagazine and #iamqueensize in those photos. As always, thank you all for your support. We are six years in and still going strong; all thanks to you. We would love to hear your feedback. Email us at queensizemagazine@gmail. com and let us know what you like, don’t like and/or want to see in future issues. We value your opinion.

MEDITATION: The purpose of meditation is to create inner peace, a centered being, focus, achieving enlightenment, and mindfulness. Usually when we think of meditation the image that comes to mind is someone sitting in lotus pose, in complete silence. While this is a great way to meditate it is not the only way. There are active and alert forms of meditation like walking meditation, Zen meditation, guided meditation, and Koans. With walking meditation, the goal is to be mindful and aware of our experiences. Generally walking meditation is slow paced, taking small non-exaggerated steps. Find a place that allows you can take at least 10-15 paces. After 10-15 steps, stop and take deep breaths. Take in the atmosphere and connect with where and who you are in that moment. In Zen meditation, a common practice is to sit with your eyes half open, starring at a white wall, the goal of this type of meditation is just sitting or ‘being’. This type of meditation can be difficult, due to looking around and finding distractions. The ultimate goal of Zen meditation is complete enlightenment.

getting in tune with your inner and higher self Guided meditation is a great way for beginners to become comfortable with meditating. Guided meditation is done with the assistance of a teacher or practitioner. Most commonly your guide will vocally assist your mental journey into a meditative state. Koans uses story telling or complex questions. Koans are questions that provoke a great state of doubt or perplexing thought that will cause you to reach a higher vibration mentally and create new insights. One of the greatest Koans is ‘Who am I?’. Imagery is another great form of meditation, especially if you have difficulty clearing your mind or focusing on one thought. Progressive imagery is a method I use to dive deeper into my mind, without worry of distraction. I will begin by picking an object or item like a mountain, a flower, or the earth. Going from the outer most parts or from the pinnacle down to the inner most or base. With each piece, I bring focus to; the more centered I become. Becoming comfortable and confident in meditation can be a difficult task. Building strong mental focus takes time. Remember to not be hard on yourself if it seems impossible at first. Start with shorter sessions, focusing for 5-10 minutes, and gradually increase the time you spend meditating or how frequently you meditate. Some things that are important for good meditation are: ● The environment. Find a place that is calm and peaceful. And eliminate distractions by leaving your phone in another room, turning off all TVs and other electronics. ● Timing. Pick a time of day or night, a length of meditating that works well for you. I like to meditate when I wake up in
the morning to get me centered and focused for the day. I also like to do a reiki session on myself at night, I consider reiki a form of meditation because it creates a space of well-being and self-awareness while also promoting a calmness for me. Others prefer to meditate in the middle of the day as a way to destress or to help not become overwhelmed by a particular task. ● Posture. Make sure you are in alinement whether sitting or lying down. You want to be comfortable, relaxed and at ease. ● Eyes. Eyes opened or closed doesn’t matter. In the beginning choose the form in which you are most relaxed. ●Breath. Focused breathing is one of the most important aspects of meditation. In the beginning your normal breath is fine. But a slow focus breath is ideal while meditating. ● Focus. Start with focusing on your breath. Become one with your breath as it goes in and out, and let all other thoughts and stress fall away as your mind clears. ● Mind. If your mind wanders while you’re meditating bring your focus back to your breath until you are centered once again. Whatever way, you meditate is fine. Doing something that challenges you will cause growth and resilience. Meditation promotes wellbeing and a calmer presence. It can bring your being to a higher vibration and create a space for you to connect with your higher self. HACKS Makeup can be very expensive, so to make sure you get the most bang for your buck here are a few Beauty Hacks you can try to extend the life of your makeup. Have you ever dropped your favorite blush or eyeshadow and it just scattered to pieces and you thought you had to throw it away? Well here’s a simple beauty hack to save your product. Collect as many pieces as you can and press it back into the original pan. Take a small amount of alcohol and pour a small amount on top to moisten and press it back together. Take a dry paper towel and press it in pan to get all of the moisture out of the product and let it sit overnight and your favorite product is good as new. Have you ever bought an eyeshadow and it just did not give you the color payoff you were hoping for? Apply NYX White milk jumbo eyeshadow pencil as the base and simply apply your shadow on top and that will make the eyeshadow color pop. Another good beauty hack for dry and clumpy mascara is to take a small amount of contact solution, add a couple drops to the product and that will help moisten and loosen it up; you’ll get much more wear out of your mascara. Last but not least skip out on buying expensive makeup wipe remover and opt for sensitive skin baby wipes. They are gentle to the skin and will remove all the makeup, dirt and oils from the skin. Hope you enjoyed these hacks to help you save products and keep a few bucks in your pocket.

Hello Beauty Ladies and Gents I feel so blessed to be coming to you once again to share my knowledge and wisdom with you. I still wake up every day reading, researching and going to trainings that allow me to stay informed and stay ahead of, what is trending in the beauty industry. My topic this month is CLIENT CONSULTATIONS I am still in disbelief when I have a new client question me and my team as to why are we making them fill out a new client consultation form. When we go to a Cosmetology School, this is the most important part of the curriculum that we are made to study. I became a Licensed Cosmetologist to become a trusted professional. To be that person that my clients can rely on to provide them with a great service, and make them feel good on the inside and out. I have a passion for good hair care because I believe that your hair is your crown and glory. As they told us in school, we will be personally involved in our clients’ lives because of the questions we have to ask you; we are just like your Doctor or Dentist because we have study and trained and passed the test to become your Medical Hair Care Provider. So first of all, make sure you are going to a Licensed Professional. If they don’t do a consultation or have a license, run. We will talk about YouTube University and having your mother’s cousin sister, best friend doing your hair at another time.

This is what I do in our Salon: Once you make an appointment or if you are a walk-in, you will be greeted by our lovely receptionist and given a Client Consultation Form. I will list some of the questions that we ask on our form, just to give you an idea. Our form is three pages long. 1. 2. 3.
When was last salon visit? In the past year, have you had any services either in or out of a salon? Are currently taking any prescribe or unprescribed medication? (please be honest with your stylist, I can tell if you are using street drugs and how many cigarettes you smoke a day, because it will show in your hair. Our hair is used in DNA testing. ) 4. Have you ever been treated by a doctor for hair loss or scalp problems? 5. How much water do you drink a day? 6. Are you currently taking any vitamins or hormones? 7. Any Allergies? 8. What are your expectations for your hair services today? 9. List all of the products that you use in your hair on a daily bases? 10. Tell me about your life style on a daily bases?
I will stop there, but coming to a salon should feel like when you are meeting your doctor or dentist for the first time. Next, we sit down and go over each question, so we can form a relationship and avoid any misunderstanding. Your stylist needs to have good listening and communication skills. I am also taking notes and placing them on the form as we talk so I will be able to give you the best advice and recommendations for your hair care. I then escort you to the shampoo bowl and now we come to the most important part; the hair analysis. This is where we examine, study, survey, inspect and investigate your hair. This is where we become the Hair police, Hair FBI, but most of all we become a specialist and a professional at what we do. My job is to now protect the clients and myself because I will be checking for, lice, sores, and dandruff, any hair or scalp disorders. I am also checking for the type, texture, thickness or thinness and your hair follicles; I can touch your scalp and should see the blood flowing in your scalp. You will always hear me tell the clients that where the blood flows, the hair will grow. After the Analysis I will discuss my advice and recommendations on what products, treatments, equipment, style and future services that will be best for you and your journey to maintain your healthy hair. The most important part that I love is making sure that my new client and everyone that sits in my chair is satisfied with the end result; that’s when I turn them around and they look in the mirror and they say I SAY YES. Don’t for get to Drink Your Water and take your Vitamins, we carry the vitamins in our Salon. In addition, Mallory was invited to participate in her first international showcase for Malia Indio’s Toronto Plus Size Fashion Show in July. This is has been a worldwind of a year for her career in Fashion production, Runway, Print, and Spokes modeling, not to mention her leadership and influence in charitable efforts on behalf of Beaucoup.

22 QSM: Mallory, you are becoming a frequent flyer in our publication. But I am not complaining lol. You are always doing something new and we love it. Before we get to the upcoming stuff, let’s talk about Full Figured Fashion though! Uhhhh BIG DEAL!!!! I remember when I saw your entry, I was like YESSSS!!! What made you enter? Mallory: Thank you so much! Queen Size Mag has felt like family from the very beginning of my relationship with this incredible organization, therefore, I am truly honored to be deemed worthy of frequent flyer status lol. I decided to submit to serve as the Face after I attended the 2016 Model Casting Call in Tampa. Although, I didn’t make the cut, I was intrigued by the professionalism, overall appeal and growth of the production and mostly, its ability to withstand for nearly a decade! That is huge; I was fascinated and wanted to know more. After expanding my modeling brand further, doing more research and listening in to your interview alongside Crystal Carmen with Ms. Devoe, I knew this was IT! It was my way to be a part of an international brand, grace the runway and provide an additional platform for another form of my craft, Spokes Modeling! I love to talk and engage people, this role allowed nothing short of the opportunity to build notable relationships and enhance my resume by working directly for “the” mogul in curvy fashion history, Gwen Devoe. QSM: Seriously though, did you think you were going to win though? I was super excited for you. Mallory: You know what…. I went in hungry and positive. I wanted this more than any other opportunity that had been presented during the course of my lifetime. I knew I had to give it my all. Being the first American Indian Face, additionally the First Face from North Carolina, and a fashion production connoisseur myself, I was ready to represent, and learn more than anything! I honestly planned to give everyone a run for their money, but here is the thing, I am always poised, even in competition mode. I just wanted to be my fabulous self, and I wanted the world to see that through my video, guess what… it worked! That is who I am truly, and to know that a group of industry panelist connected to that and felt I was the best fit was breathtaking. QSM: You had to have felt like a super star during that week though. I felt like a star being next to you lol. I am beginning to sound like a groupie here I think. Lol Mallory: I absolutely did! Gwen, Sharon, and the entire production team as well as the attendees of FFFWeek 2017, all made me (and my mother) feel incredibly loved and supported. There wasn’t a moment I went without anything essential I needed to perform my role effectively. I am eternally grateful for this incredible opportunity, it changed my life, and I don’t say that lightly, it’s truly heartfelt. Meeting young aspiring women who are much like me…. looking for a way into the industry, trying to develop, wanting to work and keeping humble at the same time…. felt like looking in the mirror. I had never been approached by people that were so willing to share their story and get emotional when just talking with me…. that, that was powerful. Little did many of them know I am much like them; Human, Curvy, a woman determined to find her fit in the world and Plus Community. QSM: We know about your responsibilities, but tell us about the perks. We wanna hear the good stuff. Mallory: I was afforded a stipend as a part of my winnings as the 2017 Face of Full Figured Fashion Week. I later discovered that was something the production team came up with as an additional “perk” for the recipient to offset expenses during her stay in the Big Apple. Also, admittance to all events for myself and a designated guest, on-going advertising of my brand on the FFFWeek website, social media platforms, and printed marketing during the event. I also was afforded airfare for myself and guest plus lodging for our stay in New York.

FEATURED STORY | MALLORY RICHARDSON QSM: What has being the Face of Full Figured Fashion Week done to your career? And what are you doing to keep that momentum going? Mallory: After being awarded the 2017 Face title of FFFWeek, I have been contacted by several industry professionals in an effort to collaborate business initiatives, campaigns, modeling, and speaking engagements, as well as afforded additional opportunities to travel and represent the brand throughout the year of my reign, and reposted, interviewed and captured for additional local support of developing fashion organizations in a consulting capacity. I will remain busy. I am keeping momentum by continuing to be reflective, compassionate and hardworking. Setting new goals while still serving in this capacity has been a must. Staying relevant and involved is vital to progression and further development of my career; THAT I recognize clearly. Brand strategy and execution efforts are being outlined for the next two years considering the aggressive need to further expand my brand following this platform are underway. QSM: Are you allowed to enter again next year? Mallory: I hope so! I don’t think that was outlined in the rules on the official fffweek site, if Gwen would allow me… I absolutely would submit again to celebrate 10 years with her, as the takeover of NY will be incredible! QSM: Either way, I am sure we will see you again next year. Mallory: I will absolutely be in NYC during FFFWeek 2018. I feel it’s my duty to pass the torch in person to my incumbent Face and make her feel celebrated as she takes on this phenomenal moment in life. I wouldn’t miss the 10 year anniversary celebration for anything. QSM: Crusade of Curves; tell us about how and why you birthed that. Mallory: In short, North Carolina NEEDS celebratory means to enhance the plus fashion and small business arena. We don’t have a fashion week to date that incorporates these two major contributors to our state’s economic growth and development. I have the insight, relationships, and passion for production, all things curves, fashion and business… so I created it. Several times over, ladies and gentleman are told NO in life…. No at their jobs, no in their aspiring goals in fashion, no in extracurricular activities, however… this I said YES to! I wanted to create an opportunity like none other for the citizens of this state. We house so much talent in all areas but due to poor major brand representation for our curvy community, we have been forced to constantly travel and take work and our money to other places, which isn’t always necessary… especially when Crusade of Curves was created to celebrate our community, on OUR home turf. QSM: Beaucoup; what was the inspiration behind the name? Mallory: My boyfriend lovingly nicknamed me that way early in our relationship. As Beaucoup represents bountiful and plentiful, larger than life… in French. I have an affinity to the language as my name is French and the sound/branding, would make a splash… because it’s unique. Since I like to go against the grain, no being such a template to other groups/ businesses…. I ran with it! The name alone is a conversation starter!
25
QSM: Also, what inspired you to form the non-profit organization? Mallory: I decided to create a nonprofit organization in my mind, years before Beaucoup was ever truly conceptualized. I planned to be involved in the nonprofit sector during middle school. As I developed a niche, learned more about myself and underwent graduate studies in nonprofit management, the vision became clearer. After my involvement in the first Ms. Full Figured NC pageant in 2015, I knew what the need was! Not all ladies are interested in pageantry, some just want to be a part of something… a sisterhood, a casual organization with purpose, and some … wanted support in modeling/fashion development for career pathing. I additionally felt a need to embrace wellness, thus my creation of Beaucoup. QSM: Sooooo a question I know the guys are going to want me to ask is; is Mallory spoken for? Lol Mallory: I am! LOL. I am in a beautiful courtship with a fellow NC entrepreneur. We have amazing fun, support each other through the chaos and share with one another during the peak and pitfall moments. That is the great part about us both being such go-getters… we relate. Want the entire world for ourselves and each other… we are fearless, I wouldn’t want anything different in a partner. QSM: Tell us something about Mallory that most will find hard to believe. Mallory: Despite what people think…. I don’t wake up with make up on :) I actually have spent the majority of my life without it. Natural beauty was always a practice in my home growing up. As I am a self made creative… and fashionista, I explored! I like color, fashion, the camera and all things glam but in my day to day life, I keep a clean or natural beat if any. I enjoy celebrating the skin on my natural face and the rest of my body without feeling a need to constantly have a full face. People probably don’t realize I am a Carolina girl to the core. I cut my own grass, tend my own home, can get super athletic when needed, and most importantly despite my polished/ professional/business exterior, I have mess up, learn lessons the hard way, and have overcome extreme emotional distress and hardship. I have a story to tell, that is for another platform, another day... QSM: Mallory, I simply adore you and I thank you for just being you 100% of the time. Please tell people where they can find you and learn more about all the great things you are doing. Mallory: I am so blessed. God has been beyond gracious in my life. I have accomplished so much in such a short period of time, and the crazy thing… I know he isn’t done with me just yet. Cheers to life, success and impact and service to others. You can keep up with my movement at www. malloryb.com, Facbook: Mallory B. Richardson and Instagram @Malthemodel @CrusadeofCurves @LargerthanLifeStyling and @Beaucoup919, whew…. yes, Im busy :). Beaucoup will be launching a website in the fall of 2017, so stay tuned on ways to get involved with the movement.

NATASHA “CRYS” NATAL| MODEL SPOTLIGHT
31
My name is Natasha ’Crys’ Natal and I am a Petite Plus Model from Jersey City, New Jersey. I am still fairly new to the Modeling industry, having fully commit myself to it for almost a year now, but I have been a part of some great projects and events thus far and have witnessed the Plus world continue to flourish and thrive. I’ve always been Plus Size, my heaviest being a size 18-20, and I’ve never tore myself down about that. Yes, like most ladies, we have our moments if a pair jeans won’t zip up after last night’s nachos, but I always still felt beautiful, I didn’t feel like my weight took away from that. Due to my love for challenge and change, I decided to become a healthier me, and made sure that that was my only reason for losing weight. Like that, modeling became something I never thought about doing before; it’s exciting and I gravitated to it so strongly. It gives me purpose. Anything else I’ve ever done never quite fit for me (like those jeans). I’ve never thought of myself as a model as a little girl growing up... I am not your typical story of it being my dream specifically. I am someone who stumbled upon something more amazing than imagined; a world of differential beauty. I am someone who takes pride in being me. I am a woman who believes she can share all the beauty within herself to make a difference, impact whom it may and spread what it means to truly self-love, through anything. These are the things I want to contribute to every woman. Thus far, I’ve attended as many modeling classes as I can to continuously polish my craft; as well as participated in contests such as The Face of Kurvacious 2017, making it in the top 10 finalists, which isn’t too bad for a ”first-timer”. These opportunities have opened up even more doors and have connected me to amazing people, which is what I want to continue to do to achieve my goals.

Life can throw curve balls at any time but so can you. You can unintentionally encounter some of the best things even with just a little confidence, like I’ve discovered. I want those who need to know most that the only expectations that matter are those you have for yourself.

GETTING TO KNOW NATASHA QSM: Reading through your story, that had to be one of the most honest stories I have ever read. Kudos to you for just taking a leap of faith. Tell us about your first experience as a model. Natasha: Thank you! My first experience was finding out about the Life Of A Working Model Boot Camp (hosted by Liris Crosse) on social media. I was already thinking of ways to get into the modeling industry and I began following a lot of models on Instagram, with Liris being one of them. I remember watching a live video of her discussing the boot camp, it was so late at night and I was in bed, and I remember saying I want to do this, I need to be there. She was hosting it in Baltimore, and I packed my bags and took a road trip there for the weekend. It helped tremendously and was probably one of the best ways I’ve could’ve started my journey. QSM: You mentioned challenge and change when you talked about your weight loss. Natasha: Yes, it was literally a random day when I decided to challenge myself to do something solely for me; not because of any opinions around nor because of a New Year’s resolution, but to truly change my lifestyle because I wanted to. Ever since, I’ve been stepping out of my comfort zone with my life, whether it’s business or personal related instances, and constantly surprise myself with what I do. It was and continuously is incredibly freeing to choose to evolve into a better version of me. QSM: You went from a size 18/20 to a what? And what are some of the things that you have done to help you become healthier? Natasha: I am now a size 10/12. I definitely did not follow a specific plan, count carbs or anything extremely complex. I cut out things I ate or drank that I knew wasn’t the best, like soda. I watched my sugar intake and my portions as well and became acquainted with healthier food alternatives to what I normally ate or drank; all while finding exercises I truly enjoyed at the gym, like Zumba or even walking on the treadmill. You’d be surprised how big an impact such little changes can make. I’ve DEFINITELY strayed, I am NOT perfect and I LOVE food. But when it matters most, I think of how far I’ve come and that I do not walk backwards in my life…those reminders have always helped me to get right back on the horse. QSM: There are a lot of talks about body shaming these days. What are your experiences and thoughts? Natasha: The body shamers literally have nothing better to do with their life which is why they’re focused on others. Honestly, people are going to talk about you no matter how beautiful, skinny, or fat you are… (people still talk badly about Beyoncé and she’s Beyoncé!). At the end of the day though, those people are not obligated to like or love you just like you are not obligated to care about the negativity or let it slow you down. I’ve had my fair share of interactions with those people and it doesn’t faze me. Again, people are going to have positive or negative opinions about you forever, but they’re just that, opinions. Keep doing what you think is best for your own self, that is the only opinion that matters.

QSM: Who are your favorite top three models in the plus size fashion industry? Past or present, and why? Natasha: That’s not easy to answer…I really like Tess Holiday, there’s no filter with her, she loves who she is (and is not) and embraces it every chance she gets, I love the confidence she possesses. Denise Bidot is pretty awesome to say the least, having become the first Plus Size Latina to walk at Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week…uh ‘nuf said! I kind of want to give the last slot to any current male Plus Model because they are really on the rise! I love a well-dressed man doing their thing and they are all that and then some. They are ALL my favorite lol! QSM: What are your ultimate goals for yourself as a model? In other words, when you can no longer model anymore, what are some things that you would have hoped to accomplish in your career? Natasha: Wow, there’s so much but I’ll summarize…I want to not only put my own stamp on the modeling world through print, runway, and even through some designs of my own, but to also help others recognize and rise to their full potential. My contribution to the industry means everything to me and I want to be someone who shows the Plus Modeling world in a different light; bringing new roles to fashion and breaking all rules. I’m going to take this industry by storm. QSM: Are you for or against the term plus size? What’s your stance on it? Natasha: I am not exactly against it. To extent, I understand those who are and may not like the labeling. However, it is who we are. We are Plus Size women. Above all, I do believe we are currently witnessing that title being redefined more and more every day in a great way.
QSM: Ok, let me leave you alone lol. What advice could you offer to someone who is looking to get into this industry? Natasha: Always network and be open-minded. I am very much comfortable with being an introvert, (my past motto was to be to myself, with myself, by myself); but I really had to break free of that mindset. Of course, it’s not easy just to be so outspoken and forthcoming especially with people you don’t know yet but again, I challenge myself to come out of my comfort zone a little more every day. And because of that, I’ve met some amazing people. More so, those people get to see me for who I am as soon as we meet rather than them having to meet me 3 or 4 more times to get to know the real me. You are marketing yourself a lot so you want your presence to be known and to leave a great impression with anyone you cross paths with; you never know what it’ll lead to. From my experience, mostly everyone I’ve met has been so welcoming and has connected me to someone else. Your resources are always important and useful somehow. QSM: Tell people where they can find you and see more of your work please. Natasha: Please follow me on Instagram @natasha_crys_ and Facebook @Natasha Crys and please like my personal modeling Facebook page @NatashaCNatal. I’d love to connect with anyone within the industry to work on new things and I always post current and upcoming events for myself and other aspiring models so, stay tuned! Xoxo
QSM: If you had the ability to change two things about the industry what would they be? Natasha: There would be no rules and everyone was welcomed through all fashions and walks of life. I know people who have already told me how they’ve considered modeling before but are “too punk rock” or “too short” or “too” anything to even try. The modeling industry appears to be so harsh that the world can be missing out on some amazing talent, all because there’s so many requirements and standards. Modeling is about reaching a broad audience and that cannot be done if you only have a handful of specific types of people. I do believe the barriers are being broken down a little more each day but there are still some ways to go. All I can hope for is ongoing progression in the industry. QSM: Time to dig all up in your personal life. Lol. Tell us something about you that people would be shocked to hear. Natasha: I don’t want kids, people are ironically shocked to hear that, I prefer pets lol I also have 3 nieces and 3 nephews (with lucky number 7 on the way!) and they are all the kids I need with the beautiful option of sending those precious babies back to their parents ;) QSM: Are you single? Natasha: I am not single, I just moved in with my boyfriend actually (pray for me lol).

What can we actually do to become confident and what in the world does etiquette have to do with it? We all know that person that radiates with the “wow” factor. Their magnetism and presence originated somewhere, but where? Wouldn’t it be nice to avoid feeling awkward? Here’s the secret, it comes from knowing that what you say and do are within acceptable codes of conduct an behavior. We become confident by practicing etiquette. The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines that “Confidence is faith or belief that one will act in a right, proper, or effective way. The definition of etiquette is defined as “The conduct or procedure required by good breeding or prescribed by authority to be observed in social or official life.” Knowing that etiquette is the foundation for confidence gives us good reasons to mind our manners. The following are tips you can use right now to start the confident ball rolling. Stand up straight and tall, keep your head level One way to use etiquette to project confidence is through body language. Body language tells our story before we even speak. Slouching with our head down tells others that we want to be left alone. The opposite is true when we walk tall have good posture and smile. Make eye contact There is no better way to show you are confident than by making eye contact. Looking down sends the signal you are unsure. Give a firm handshake A handshake conveys emotions and intent. Giving a limp handshake shows you are unsure. Sweaty palms are a sign of nerves and feeling anxious. Confidence is cultivated over time. You must practice very deliberately everyday until it becomes part of you and your personal style. In time it will become natural and not come across forced. Plan to start with the first person you connect with during the day. Pick your chin up, make eye contact and give a firm handshake. The modern day translation of etiquette is “ticket” as your ticket in. Confidence is your ticket to opportunity!

My name is Onzetta Roberts and I live in the state of Georgia. I’m a plus size published model I’ve walked in fashion shows from Atlanta Georgia to New York City. I’m an aspiring model that took the leap of faith and started this journey into fashion. I aspire to be model, because I want to give the world and the fashion industry a real view of your everyday woman. To show the world that you can be a size 16 and be fierce, beautiful, fashionable, and be able to rock the runway.

QSM: Now THIS has been a long time coming. I love your work; you are beautiful and versatile. I think I may have told you that about a million times already. But what was your starting point for this modeling journey? Onzetta: I would go to church every Sunday with my face made up and wearing clothes that were my own style. Everyone kept telling me that I should be a model. There’s a movement in Atlanta called, Curve Appeal. It’s a movement for curvy women to change the view that society has about us. I drove four hours to one of their casting calls and I never looked back. I would do photo shoots and fashion shows with the ladies in this movement; and that’s how my journey began. QSM: What makes you the everyday woman? Onzetta: I’m a mother of four children and a wife for the past 22 years to my loving husband. I have a career in the aerospace industry I work a 40-50 hour week. I don’t wear makeup everyday I wear t-shirts and jeans; I’m the girl next door. QSM: Drop the Plus or Keep the Plus; what is your stance? Onzetta: Keep the plus, because it sets us apart, it puts us in our own lane. Plus in math is equated to more and hunny it’s more of us to love, more of us to be fabulous, more of us to command the attention when we walk in a room. I embrace my plus size and I love all of me. QSM: Have you ever been body shamed? Onzetta: I actually was body shamed by other plus size women (a twist from what one may have thought about this question). I’ve gone to casting calls and other plus size woman of a larger build would openly ask me why was I there. Said things like you’re not plus size, rolled their eyes and all. These were very hurtful moments for me my body shape and size 16 deserves to also be represented in the plus size community. QSM: In addition to being a model, you are also the mom of a real superhero. Tell us about Jason. Onzetta: OMG this boy is a miracle. Last year at age 11 years old he had two strokes one on both sides of his brain. We were told by two hospitals in two different cities they’ve never seen so much brain damage without finding the cause. We were told he wouldn’t make it through the night but God said otherwise. He spent three months in ICU on a ventilator, he had other major health issues while in ICU. The only way to get him off of the ventilator was to have a tracheotomy put in. Through it all my husband and I never loss hope because we believe in the God we serve. Jesus in the 21st century is still working miracles. We were told he would have no quality to life he would be a vegetable. My husband retired early and I work to support our family. We brought our baby home and in two days he started moving his right side. Today his brain is still healing and he has left every doctor, nurse, and therapists in complete amazement of his recovery. He no longer has a trachea, he talks, and he just started eating a little. He’s in special needs class in school, we for now take care of him like a baby. It’s been a horrific journey to go from your child running around being a normal kid to not being able to walk. He’s relearning everything, he has a long way to go. But I’ve never loss faith that God won’t do what he says he will do. I believe my son is already healed and made whole. God is faithful!!!!
QSM: What’s in the future for you superstar? Onzetta: To be a cover model!!! (By faith) QSM: Where can people follow you? Onzetta: I’m always posting on FB and IG. I post makeup looks I have well over 100 wigs so I’m constantly posting my various looks. I want to inspire women to get out of your comfort zone. I’m 46 years old and a size 16 and I want women of all races to know you are BEAUTIFUL AND PHENOMENAL!!! Don’t allow life to live you; no you live life. Sometimes it takes me five hours to create a look to post on FB and IG while I’m taking care of Jason by myself. He has a feeding tube in his stomach and he gets his medicines through that tube. So in between me putting on makeup I’m giving him medicine, he wears briefs (adult pampers) so I change him etc. Please I pray my story inspire someone to not lay down and die in your situation, but stand firm and choose to LIVE and be FABULOUS!!!! Onzetta Roberts is how you can find me on FB and IG. Queen Size thank you for this amazing platform to encourage other plus size women to be BOLD, BEAUTIFUL, AND BLESSED!!!!
QSM: Jason is not your only child right? Tell us about your other children. Onzetta: I have a 28 year old son that lives in Macon, Ga. My 22 year old son just left today to start his career in being a truck driver. And my only daughter is 16 years old, smart and beautiful. And of course my 13 year old miracle Jason. QSM: As a model, you do a lot of traveling right? How has Jason’s health affected your career? Onzetta: I for a year and a half stopped modeling all together to focus on Jason. But once he finally got to a more stable place in his recovery, my husband and I decided to get back to living. I wasn’t sure if I would get back to modeling then a local photographer reached out to me about 3 months ago and I’ve been moving forward since then. I still don’t travel much, but every chance I can I do. QSM: What do you do for a living? Onzetta: I design 2d engineering drawings and 3d models of the interior and exterior of business jets. QSM: How in the world do you manage all of this? Onzetta: If it had not been for God on my side I would probably be dead. Honestly speaking what I’ve watched my son go through, I on many occasions thought about suicide. But my faith in God is stronger than any thought the enemy would try and tempt me with. You can’t go through and continue to go through my day to day life without the strength of God. My morning starts with helping to get my 140 pound 13 year old son ready for school before I get ready to go to work. Through it all I tell people God didn’t stop all of things my son has gone through, but he did stop death!!!

BEHIND
THE LENS
”I truly believe there is a point when a photograph becomes more than an image; it becomes a vision. In this vision I am able to promote curiosity, narrate and evoke emotion by means of planning and setup, technical skill and heavy use of creative imagination. These elements combined with my love for art unify into what I call not a photo…..but a Photo-Graphic.” Marco Nunez
In October 2015, Marco had a doctor’s appointment that would change the course of his life forever. He went to the doctor for chronic joint pain and swollen lymph nodes. and discovered that he had Stage 3 Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia. Additionally, he discovered his particular type of cancer was a rare kind that only 5% of people with Leukemia contract. It is extremely rare, aggressive and resistant to treatment. Most people that are diagnosed with it, particularly as late as he was, have a 10-month prognosis. In the last 22 months, he has endured three rounds of chemo, each round more aggressive than the next. He was in remission for a short time in 2016, but the cancer returned. Currently, while not in remission, his cancer is being controlled with medication, and his mission is to live life to the fullest, doing what he loves and was born to do...photography.
MARCO NUNEZ Marco Nunez is a 47 year old Chicago photographer, who for the past five years has used his artistic eye and penchant for perfection to create beautiful imagery and capture some of the most important moments in people’s lives. Whether you’re a novice, agency model, a celebrity or simply IG famous, Marco treats every person that stands in front of his lens with the same amount of respect. He’s been quoted as saying that every person has an “It” factor, it’s up to then to let it be seen, and he’s made it his job to give you the platform to flaunt your gifts. His gifts extend beyond photography, he is also a very accomplished graphic artist. Graphic design was actually his first love, and what he thought he wanted to do. After teaching himself how to use PhotoShop, he decided to attend Chicago’s Art Institute to further his education in Graphic Design. After taking a mandated photography class, he fell in love with the camera. The freedom that came with capturing live imagery, as well as the nuances that could be created with lighting and shadows, spoke to him in a way that graphic design didn’t, and just like that, he changed his major, and decided to pursue photography. In addition to his freelance work, Marco is also the Creative Director for Endee Magazine, one of the leading Urban online magazines, as well as Chicago Plus Size blog, Curvy Fabulosity. He has also been a staff photographer for Hinsdale Magazine, a local magazine serving the Illinois upscale community and surrounding areas. He has worked with National organizations such as the National Black MBA Association, and is the preferred photographer for the Chicago Chapter of Project Curve Appeal, an organization that caters to the empowerment of Plus Size Women.

In his journey, Marco has encountered many people fighting this terrible disease. Some are winning their battle, and unfortunately, some have lost. He’s formed special bonds with women survivors especially. He understands the effects that chemo and radiation has on the body and how it changes your appearance, as he himself dealt with complete hair loss, extreme weight loss, skin changes, etc. Feeling unattractive he became reclusive and depressed. He came to realize that if as a man the changes in his appearance could make him feel this way, it had to be ten times worse for women, given the societal standards of beauty and what is considered acceptable in that realm. The artist in him wanted to find a way to both further Cancer awareness and the search for the cure, while also embracing the beauty of those affected. Marco has decided to honor the people who battle this disease by showing their beauty and strength in the best way he knows how...through beautiful imagery. He has chosen to profile 20 survivors and create a coffee table book, titled “I Will” that will be made available for purchase later this year, with a portion of the proceeds going to the American Cancer Society to aid with their advances in cancer research. When asked what keeps him going and motivated in the era of iPhones, Androids and where any Johnny Push Buttons with a QVC camera bundle can call themselves a photographer, he simply states “love of the game….I love what I do.” To that he adds, “you get what you pay for...you can go anywhere and get good, even great photos, but they’ll never be Severe”. You can check out more of Marco’s work and contact him for bookings via his website severephotographics.com

Tanisha Cadet Meet Tanisha, who began her modeling career in her hometown of Boston, MA and set to make a lasting name for herself in the industry. Tanisha’s love for modeling began while attending Suffolk University and taking part in a student organization’s annual fashion show during her freshman year. After graduating, she began to attend castings for fashion shows featuring local designers from her hometown. This continued to spark her interest and drive and became the deciding factor for her to pursue modeling in New York. Her first featured show was during Couture New York Fashion Week where she was the only plus size model. This became a stepping stone for her to begin her breakout work in print modeling, where she became the annual “Face Model” for another well-known New York based magazine and winning the monthly prize for Cynthia Bailey’s Curvy & Fabulous
photo contest. Tanisha continues to work with designers and boutiques in New York as well as being an in-house model for Queen Size Magazine, including being featured in 3 different issues so far. Tanisha does not plan to slow done her modeling career in print and runway anytime soon! Her experiences have gone so far to inspire her to want to take on acting and hosting as well, following in the footsteps of her model inspirations Ashley Graham and Toccara Jones. Modeling is something that always brings me to my “happy place”. Looking at my work so far just inspires me to branch out and do more in any positive way I can. The connection I have to the camera or in front of an audience makes me feel great and truly lets me bring out my confidence.

TANISHA CADET | MODEL SPOTLIGHT
49
QSM: Tanisha, what do you love the most about modeling? Tanisha: Modeling is truly my inner comfort zone and at the same time allows me to express myself through the work I’m doing.
Growing up I always identified myself as a Haitian-American. I travel to Haiti and other islands whenever I get the chance. Most recently I went to Barbados and experienced my first international carnival experience.
QSM: Now tell me what your biggest pet peeve is when it comes to modeling. Tanisha: I would say the mis-representation or judgement the plus size/curvy industry gets whether its size standards or what others consider “beautiful” to look like.
QSM: What made you choose NY to pursue a modeling career? Tanisha: I’ve always seen NY as the go to place to be for modeling. This is the place to be for fashion and making the best connections. The fast pace city gives me the drive and motivation to want to see everything that is out there to offer.
QSM: I am pretty sure you get the looks and comments about “how small you are” and that you are not plus size. What are your thoughts and where do you think you fit in into this industry? Tanisha: Yes, I understand everyone may have a different opinion of what plus size looks to them or what size number a model needs to be for this industry. But to ME, I’ve always considered myself a curvy plus size model. When I look at myself in the mirror, my built and look is unique but it works in line with what I am going for. At the end of the day, if I see a casting or submission contest and I meet the requirements I am attending and applying and will continue to get chosen for what is meant for me. QSM: Tell me about life growing up for you. Tanisha: Growing up my life has always been family oriented. I’ve always had great support systems which has truly made me the woman I am today. Being around people who love you and positivity makes you want to best person you can be daily and return the love back. QSM: Have you always been into fashion? Tanisha: Yes, starting at a very young age thanks to my mom and her love of fashion too, lol. When I was a baby she would dress me up daily in these cute fancy outfits whether we were just going to the store or for a walk (my baby pictures are so extra lol). From then on I always paid extra attention to my outfit choices or spent more time than needed getting ready. Looking the best I can be important to me; I feel like I can do or accomplish anything in a nice outfit. QSM: I’ve noticed that you are an island lover. Do you have any background from any of the islands? Tanisha: Island lover indeed! 90-degree weather, palm trees and a coconut or mango in my hand is my type of relaxation. I was born in the U.S. but both my parents are from Haiti.
QSM: What do you do for a living and do you have any intentions on doing modeling full time? Why or why not? Tanisha: I am currently a Financial Funding Specialist for one of the largest healthcare providers in New England. I most definitely would pursue modeling full time. I believe life opportunities always happen in its right moment and when the time comes for modeling to become my full-time path then there will be no turning back for me. Till then I plan on continuing both career paths the same dedication. I can never give up on something I love doing. QSM: Where do you see the plus size modeling industry in the next five years (and what do you think it will take to get us there)? Tanisha: In the next five years, I see the plus size industry being accepted as a “standard” and not in its own separate category. The average size woman in America is a size “12” so seeing more and more woman of different shapes and sizes should be seen as the norm. This in itself will create even more opportunities for plus size models to be used and featured for products and Ads you don’t see today. I think model unity and trend setting as we are currently doing will get us there. What I love about the plus size fashion industry is that we not afraid to take risk regardless of measurements and sizes. We believe in representing fashion in the best way we know how. QSM: Thank you for your time. Please tell people where they can follow you and see more of your work. (Any final thoughts you can add) Tanisha: Follow all my social media handles FB/Twitter/ Snapchat- @iamtanishac. Thank you QSM for the opportunity and feature!
