FROM THE DESK OF Tawana Blassingame Founder & Editor in Chief

Welcome to the October 2018 issue of Queen Size Magazine. Warm weather is still amongst us but you know it’s time to start getting ready for Fall. Although I was born in the heart of summer, I am not a summer girl; I do not like the heat. Fall is my favorite time of the year because you get to enjoy the cool weather and not have to deal with those godforsaken allergies. I also look forward to pulling out my high boots and sweater dresses; my favorite fashion trend! QSM recently took a trip to Atlanta for the TCFStyle Expo. And while we were there we had the amazing opportunity to shoot with some great women. This issue is filled with a lot of our experiences there. It was the first time that I had gotten the chance to hang out with the infamous MSNICKEE and what an honor it was. She opened her home, her heart and her mind up to us. Moments like these are unforgettable as I learned so much from her on that day. This brings me to a message I want everyone to open their minds to; if you are going to go into business, it is imperative to have mentors. Please don’t think you have to figure this all out on your own. You will have long term and short term mentors. But be sure you are learning something from each of them. We hope that you enjoy what we have put together for you this month. We would love to hear your feedback. Email us at queensizemagazine@gmail.com and let us know what you like, don’t like and/or want to see in future issues. We value your opinion.

The Science of Water:

WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|OCTOBER 2018 ISSUE

THE SCIENCE OF WATER| CARLOS AND PARNELL, M.D., P.A.

What You Drink and Your Immune System Most people know that their bodies are made up of a great deal of water, but may be surprised to learn that number is about 70 percent—and yet studies show we don’t drink enough to replenish what we need. Other drinks to be sure, but water? Not even close. Emphasizing this point is a study conducted by Dr. Alyson Goodman for the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention that suggests one in 10 Americans drink no water every day. Zero. She calls these results “mindboggling.” “Water is vital for life,” says Goodman. “Many health risks decrease when you drink plain water.” Goodman believes that the non-water drinkers are getting their water from coffee, sodas, food and other sources, which might theoretically be okay, except for the calories that are associated with those other liquids. According to Dr. Theodore A. Baroody, in order for a body to function well, it must have water, and in order for it to function properly, it must continuously work to maintain a proper pH or chemical balance. To this end, the benefits of drinking water can’t be measured (preventing dehydration chief among them), however, adding alkaline water to a diet already rich in nutrient dense foods can help maintain a body’s pH balance, as well as aid in avoiding cancer, weak bones, premature aging and fatigue. “An unbalanced pH can force your body to borrow important minerals from your vital organs and bones in order to remove excess acid,” Baroody says. Water such as Alkame Water not only helps regulate these important pH balances in the body, but can boost the immune system, improve cardio-respiratory function and enhance energy levels. It even fights oxidative stress and free radicals. Unlike its tap and bottled counterparts, Alkame Water goes through a process called “micro-clustering,” in which the molecules that make up water are broken up into smaller “clusters,” allowing body cells to absorb the water much faster, and in turn hydrate you more efficiently. “If someone were to ask me, ‘What is the one thing I can do to have better health?’ Then the answer would be simple: Start drinking alkaline, ionized water,” says Dr. Robert O. Young, PhD, author of the “The pH Miracle.” Alkame Water, Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Pinacle Enterprise Inc. (OTCBB: PINS) (OTCQB: PINS). For more information on Alkame Water and its health benefits, visit www. alkamewater.com.

REASONS TO SNACK ON STRAWBERRIES (BPT) - The perfect snack needs to check off three boxes: It should be filling enough to get you to your next meal, provide nutrition that fits into your balanced diet, and satisfy cravings, whether sweet or savory. Not an easy task, but juicy California strawberries are up for the challenge. “Strawberries are an ideal snack because not only do they taste great, they’re also heart-healthy and an anti-inflammatory food,” says Manuel Villacorta, registered dietitian and author of Flat Belly 365. “I love to pair strawberries with yogurt, peanut butter on rice crackers, or cottage cheese. Strawberry smoothies are also a favorite.”

5 REASONS TO SNACK ON STRAWBERRIES

9

NATURALLY SWEET, YET LOW IN SUGAR Many people get the urge to graze around that 3 o’clock slump. By reaching for something that has natural sweetness, you can fulfill that craving without excess calories and sugar. In fact, one serving of eight strawberries has only 50 calories and eight grams of sugar.

BURSTING WITH NUTRIENTS Another reason to love strawberries? “The combination of flavonoids, antioxidants and fiber can help reduce cholesterol levels,” Villacorta says. “Plus, strawberries are full of potassium, which can help manage blood pressure and prevent strokes.” Strawberries don’t stop there; a single serving has more vitamin C than an orange.

BOOST YOUR BRAIN According to a study in the Annals of Neurology, eating strawberries at least twice per week may delay cognitive aging by two and a half years, which includes improvement in memory and motor function. Add in a daily sudoku or crossword puzzle and you’re on your way to a sharper mind!

GREAT FOR DIABETES MANAGEMENT Nutrient-packed strawberries are a great option for those with diabetes. In fact, the American Diabetes Association lists strawberries as a top superfood for diabetic meal plans. “The anthocyanins found in strawberries may help improve insulin resistance, which means you can regulate blood glucose better,” according to Villacorta.

SNACKS ANYONE WILL LOVE Both kids and adults love a good strawberry snack. Try a strawberry oat bar, peanut butter yogurt dipped strawberries, strawberry almond butter snackwich or even strawberry turkey pinwheels to switch things up in your afternoon routine. From quick and kid-friendly to fancy appetizers, visit CaliforniaStrawberries.com for snacks perfect for all ages and occasions. Snacking can be fun for the whole family with bright colors, simple recipe ideas, unexpected flavor combinations and a little creativity. And if your snacks are full of vital nutrients and health benefits, even better! What are you waiting for? Pick up some strawberries and get snacking today.

I AM RACHEL BROWN I currently reside in Charlotte, NC. I have been modeling off and on since I was 14 years old. Within this past year, I have been really investing in myself and my craft. My favorite form of modeling is Runway. I become a different person when I step onto the catwalk. Almost like an alter ego. I am sharing an inner part of myself with the audience and the designers. I was given the chance to walk during New York Fashion Week in February as well as Full Figured Fashion Week this past June.. My goal is to pursue more print work, be a featured model in a clothing campaign and sign with a national modeling agency.

The most common discussion with my clients, who are “bosses”, is their appearance. When selecting great pieces for their wardrobe or key makeup products for their routine, I usually have to remind those who have hired me that their audience buys into the look before they buy a book, a program, accessories, coaching or anything they have to offer. It seems to me that most people think that if the product or service is good enough then the buyer won’t care about the packaging and that is all wrong! The truth is that people won’t even look into a product or service without something or someone who attracts them. I know, I know, it may be a sad thing to say or admit, but it is the society we live in and have always lived in. People like what they see first and then they buy. Just think about it, what makes you walk into a store you’ve never been in to spend your hard or smart earned money? There was something in the window or website that made you believe that you will get the same exact product or service for your own pleasure and growth.

Buying any brand really means that you are buying into an experience that only that brand can provide. This can even apply to you at work. You’re the brand. Most luxury brands cost because of the name, but bigger than that, it’s the quality behind the name that helps maintain its reputation for years to come. I want you to know that you are the luxury bag people are buying into. I’m sure your prospects will value your quality, but not before they fall in love with the way you look! Presentation is key to any successful negotiation and I don’t suggest that you leave it to chance so I have a few recommendations:

BOSS OR GLOSS | CRYSTAL CARMEN

17

Stay Inspired!

Vision boards are not just for homes, cars, and Oprah. They’re for anything you’d like to come alive in your life. Take a look on Pinterest to print out your favorite pieces or grab some high profile magazines and cut them out. Don’t limit yourself to the silhouette of the clothing, but cut or print out pieces that stand out to you for just the color as well.

Clean Your Closet!

After you’ve created your board, take a good look in your closet to see whether or not the pieces you’ve selected on paper are in the same vein as the tops and bottoms hanging up. If you have nothing in your closet that is remotely close to what you’ve posted on your board, it’s time to bridge the gap asap! Just be sure to donate your current pieces as you add new pieces.

Leave It to a Professional!

Believe it or not, nothing brings your brand to life than a stylist or beauty professional who understands your personality, your insecurities, your confidence, your style, and your budget. Taking all of those things into consideration, a stylist will provide the look you need and love without the stress so that on the day of your photoshoot, all you have to do is show up for the glow up! Oh and uhh, stylists have inside connections to designer original pieces unlike anyone else on the planet; try that on for size!

Take a Makeup Lesson.

Make up and fashion go hand and hand like sisters and ensuring that you can put together a great look to set off your outfit will turn you into your brand’s icon in no time or if you’re employed and looking for a promotion you’ll be sure to be stand out from the crowd at work. The best way to do this is to hire a makeup artist for private class because it’s personalized to your needs and look.. If you can’t invest in a custom lesson try to attend a class happening in your area.

If you’re in need of a beauty or image stylist for your brand makeover look for one in your area whose style you like and get started on turning heads, breaking necks, and cashing checks for all of the right reasons! If you are in the Philadelphia area and would like to work with me.. visit www.crystalcarmen.com. All new clients who mention this article can get your next copy of Queen Size Magazine on me.

Shaquille O’Neal’s New Big and Tall Clothing Line Is Inspired by Barack Obama Basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal has teamed up with JCPenney’s to launch a clothing line for Big and Tall men. The line which is said to launch in the fall (September 12th) was inspired by the great Barack Obama. The Shaquille O’Neal Collection is about success, elegance, fun and friendly. And we all know that Mr. Obama fits those criteria to the “T”. On or off the court, the new line will offer a wide range modern fit that will be versatile. The line promises to let customers easily transition from the basketball court to the corporate world. Not only was the line inspired by Barak, but it also emerged from the challenges Shaq faced with shopping for clothing. Who would have thought that a multimillionaire would have difficulties finding clothing to wear? He explained that throughout his life he always has challenges finding clothing to fit his tall frame. As a result, he has teamed up with JCPenney to offer professional attire for men under $300! Prices for suits starts at $199.99, while sports coats start at $114.99. However, this isn’t the first time Shaq has teamed up with a major retail store to offer clothing for Big and Tall men. Shaq teamed up with Macy’s back in 2014 to offer tailed suits for Big and Tall men. Not sure what happened to that business venture, but we eagerly await the grand opening of his new collection. Head on over to JCPenney on September 12th to check out The Shaquille O’Neal Collection. Let us know what you think about the new line.

Virgo Nicole Collection

I first met Nicole at the TCFStyle Expo in August of this year. Being the Virgo that I am, her booth caught my attention so I had to go and check it out. I remember approaching the booth and saying “so who is the Virgo around here”. LOL.. It was a cool icebreaker. We chatted for a bit and discovered that not only do we share the same zodiac sign, but we actually share the same birthday. After we laughed and hugged, we got down to business. I am looking forward to placing my first order with Nicole very soon. Here is a small feature on who Nicole is and what she offers. Look out for more of Nicole in future issues. Crystal Nicole is from the small town of Scottdale, GA. She is the owner and creative director of VirgoNicoleCollection which launched January 1, 2017. VirgoNicoleCollection is a plus size zodiac swimwear collection which also includes eye catching custom slogan swimwear and apparel. Nicole originally created the custom zodiac swimsuit for herself while celebrating her 30th birthday in Miami, FL during the summer of 2016. After posting pictures on social media of herself wearing the popular Virgo swimsuit she began receiving a huge amount of inquiries from women that wanted to know how to purchase the swimwear. Seizing the opportunity, she used $350 to invest in her own equipment and thus Virgo Nicole C was born. Nicole says that her brand allows women to celebrate themselves and also make a bold statement without saying much at all. “I have hopes for Virgo Nicole Collection to grow into a nationwide well known respectable brand in the years to come.”

THE MSNICKEE MACK STORY | QSM

31

Let’s get to know MSNICKEE QSM: First things first; what DON’T you do? MsNickee: Bad Business QSM: I know that’s right! I dare not ask you your government name lol, but please do tell us about little MsNickee; what is your background, where are you from? MsNickee: I’m from Athens, Ga and I am a Southern Bell at heart. My middle name is Nichole and when I decided to go in to business for myself I legally changed my name to MsNickee because as a child of a true southern mother she always taught us that it was respectful to say yes maam, no maam, and Ms or Mr.; that stuck with me. It’s just a form of respect we sometimes have to demand for ourselves, so I always say its MsNickee One Word No Period lol QSM: Did you grow up with both your parents? Do you have siblings? MsNickee: I have 6 siblings, two of them are step-brothers and yes we were raised by both parents. QSM: I recall in one of your previous interviews where you talked about how you got into modeling at the age of 13. Can you share some of that with our readers? MsNickee: As a middle child I felt left out a lot of times so I really believe I was looking for something I could be involved in that made me feel good, and being tall got me noticed in that area. But I was always a little too plump so I knew I had to perfect my skills in order to compete. QSM: Take me back to the beginning. Where did it all start for you? What was your first endeavor outside of modeling? MsNickee: I can share a LIGHT BULB moment. I remember when I was in high school, I was in a modeling troupe and they did a show in the auditorium where I was the only plus size girl. I walked twice; once in a jumper from the store that was super tight, (I was a size 14) and an outfit my mother made for me. The crowd went wild because I looked like a real size woman, and they related to me. That’s when a teacher took a special interest in me and helped me push further with my modeling. In that moment I realized, I was there all day, went to every fitting and there were 6 scenes, everyone walked in each except for me, even the guys. My body was more developed, I was tall, and at that moment I knew I had to do something about this. Outside of modeling I went to beauty school, I am a licensed Esthetician and can beat a mean mug honey, I also used to design ECO clothing babyyyyyyyyyyy they loved it; it was hot before its time. QSM: Can we talk about the importance of mentors (your thoughts)? Who were your mentors when you were coming up in the business? MsNickee: It is always important to try and learn new things everyday and the best way to do that is to have people in your life that inspire you, people who are on another level and pushing through. People you can go to and seek advice from. They don’t have to be in your line of work just someone you respect and admire; it can change your life. Mentors are like Colleges, they are a wealth of knowledge on every level. My mentors Gwen Devoe, Joyce Smiley, Joan Scott and the one and only Margaret Mack my beautiful mother. QSM: Before you became an entrepreneur, what were you doing (career-wise)? MsNickee: Office management for Special Needs organization, travel counselor for AAA and makeup. I always had more than one job. QSM: What made you start a modeling agency? MsNickee: When someone said to me you are too big and you just can’t do that type of work; you are cute but you have to be really pretty. It hurt then but I laugh now. I also got tired of seeing two plus models in an entire show of ten scenes and only see then once or twice like more of us didn’t exist.

walk up to them and tell them they are beautiful and that strikes a conversation that leads to modeling. I remember when I had three models and I prayed to GOD asking that he help me expand my business. I would wait on him when it came to adding people and letting people go and he always shows up and shows out for me. That’s talent, as far as clients I advertise my services all the time and they hit me up but I get a lot of referrals because I absolutely try my best to always do Great business and word travels fast whether you do or don’t, so I make sure I always DO. MsNickee: I have produced my own shows in the past and hosting them throughout the beginning of my building a business journey and I was always told I have a great speaking voice girlllllllllllllll then one day someone put a mic in my hands and told me to stall for them and it was on and poppin from there. QSM: LOL I can see that. Let’s discuss this book “Your Guide to a Perfect Fashion Show Production”. What a guide it is!! Every show producer should have this book in their arsenal. What inspired you to write the book? MsNickee: I was talking to Tip Jones one day about mess shows and production and wondering why this and that wasn’t don’t, so she challenged me to write a book about it, with a deadline and all. She said that I knew a lot about the subject so she inspired me to speak it in to existence and she helped me bring it to life.

QSM: I can’t look at an ORS product without thinking of you; I guess you are doing your job. Lol. Can you tell us the back story on how you got involved? MsNickee: A beautiful young lady named Jennifer Jackson kept hearing my name being passed round the industry and she reached out. I had helped build a major hair brand in the past and she heard I was an excellent leader in that areas of business so she flew in from Chicago because she was looking for a regional manager in Atlanta and it went from there. I LOVE IT QSM: MsNickee Mack, you are an empire all on your own. Looking back fifteen years ago, did you think you would be here where you are now? MsNickee: I knew I would be in the business. GOD has been showing up and out throughout my journey and I am truly Blessed and Highly Favored to be where I am today and I still have a ways to go. QSM: What can we look out for from MsNickee The Brand next? MsNickee: BABYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY this International thing I spoke in to existence years ago is happening, and by brand is growing, expect another book, and a new level for the modeling industry to explore. All I ever wanted to do was pour in to women and young girls what wasn’t poured in to me, and give them a chance to shine in their own light. I am finally comfortable in the skin I am in and who I am and still growing to be. My desire is to crash the glass ceiling that blocks in and boxes in the Curvy girl/guy and show the world how beautiful we truly are on the inside and the outside. More platforms like this one are needed in order to hear our voices and to see our beauty. Bravo to all of the generals like you that charge ahead for us, and give us these amazing outlets. THE INTROVERT MODEL | LAWANDA “LALA FACES” SANYANG

Plus Model Shawntel Cisse considers herself a simple girl from the Bayou who happens to be an introvert. She is from Lafayette, Louisiana and traveled with the military landing her in North Carolina. Shawntel began exploring her modeling journey with a pageant audition. She placed the bet with a friend about modeling in the pageant. She did not go for the casting call but she had paid her fees and at the last minute she just decided to put something on and go model. The response was overwhelming and people began to tell her that she should look into modeling. At that point in time she did not know what it was to be a Plus Model. She did not know there was an industry for plus Models until she began to do a research. Shantel considers herself an introvert and that is a challenge for her when it comes to modeling. She has to get comfortable before she can start to warm up to people and come out of her shell. People can often interpret her introvertness as being stuck up or anti-social but actuality she faces challenges with networking with other models. There are times she does not know what to say to create the right conversation because she does not want to say the wrong thing. The industry can be cliquish. She hopes in the future that seasoned models can be more welcoming to new models offering encouraging words to new faces. Shawntel does offer tips for other models who deal with this same challenge of being an introvert. One tip is to just say hello to break the ice. The second tip is being helpful to other models during events. Most introverts are thinkers and this allows her time to think through the process, create new ideas and problemsolve. Shawntel has set very positive goals for herself in moving forward in her modeling journey. She does plan to attend more model events and seminars to meet new people. She hopes to break out of her shell and do more speaking. She continues to push herself to network and has modeled in several events such as, The Carolina Music Award, Women’s Empowerment, Sister Summit Fashion Show , The Essence Confidence Pool Party and Refinery 21. She is currently the Heiress House model and very excited for opportunity to model and travel for the Brand. You can follow her model journey on Instagram: at plusmodel_ shawntel_cisse and FaceBook: plusmodelShawntelcisse. So if you have the opportunity to meeet Shawntel just say hello to her to help get the conversation started. Beautiful Crafted, Lala Faces

5 BACK-TOSCHOOL TIPS FOR PARENTS WITH YOUNG ATHLETES by Mitzi Dulan, registered dietitian and nutrition consultant

The transition between summer and going back to school can be tough, especially for families with student athletes who are participating in fall sports. Whether your athletes are in high school or grade school, it’s difficult to balance schoolwork, practice, games, proper nutrition and rest. Mitzi Dulan, registered dietitian and nutrition consultant to professional athletes, has some great tips on how to help your child eat adequate, nutritious foods for their best performance in the classroom and on the field. “As a working mom with two daughters who play volleyball, I understand the time crunch parents are up against to prepare healthy meals and snacks for their kids,” says Dulan. “Young athletes require optimal nutrition for fueling and recovery around practice and games, in addition to a well-balanced diet as growing adults. A little knowledge and planning ahead makes all the difference during busy weeks.” Here are five tips from Mitzi for busy parents with young athletes: 1. Recover right: Immediately following a practice or competition, help your athlete refuel their muscles to optimize performance the next time they train or compete. Consuming a beverage with carbs and protein within the first 30 minutes is ideal. Chocolate milk has a great ratio of carbs and protein, making it a smart, quick and easy choice to stock up on. 2. Create a go-to grocery list: Get your athlete involved by having them help you create a go-to list of top fueling foods that you can save on your smartphone. Bring your child along for the first grocery trip to get their input and create a list of new options to

WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|OCTOBER 2018 ISSUE

replace old staples. Keeping this list handy on your smartphone will be helpful to keep their favorite foods stocked at home. 3. Set up fueling stations at home: Organize “fueling stations” with grab-and-go options such as string cheese, chocolate milk, sports drinks, protein balls, honey and more. You can also throw in whole wheat sandwich thins to make one of my favorites - an open-faced sandwich with peanut butter, banana and honey. Also keep a fruit bowl on your kitchen counter, filled with bananas, apples and other fruits. Fruit is great fuel, and kids are more likely to eat it when it’s readily available. 4. Equip yourself with the right tools: Staying connected is essential as a parent. My girls are very involved, which means there are plenty of practices and games to manage, so I rely on my smartphone to maintain it all with calendar and meal planning apps. Thankfully, Walmart Family Mobile offers Truly Unlimited talk, text and data◊ plans at 4G LTE† speeds, so I don’t have to worry about running out of data. With Walmart Family Mobile’s new family plans, I can get two Truly Unlimited lines* for less than $75 per month, making it easy and affordable for all of us to stay connected. 5. Get plenty of rest: With a hectic schedule, it’s important to recharge. Sleep is an essential step to the recovery process, and kids need time to hit reset after hitting the books and hitting the field. Make sure your athletes are getting enough sleep and have scheduled down time in between games and practices so they can let their bodies recover and build their energy back up.

46 QSM: Tell me, what does Nathaniel do for fun when he is not working? Nathaniel: There are quite a few things I like to do. One being shopping (retail therapy is EVERYTHING), second, since my weekends are always so busy I try my best to go and spend time with my God son Bobby; whom just started 2nd grade. Lastly I LOVE traveling to new places and try new foods and experience different cultures; with the world being so big why not go and explore it. QSM: When you were growing up, what did you want to be? I had this idea of becoming a teacher, but then I got tired of school. lol Nathaniel: The funny thing is I did want to be a police officer LOL oh man did that end quickly. Then I had this bright idea of being a therapist. Life can throw you some curves balls, because the therapist career never happened; however, being a hairstylist you somewhat have to be a therapist. Clients always need a listening ear. QSM: When did you realize that you enjoyed doing hair? Nathaniel: I know for a fact what I enjoy the most is bring hair back to life. There is a joy in watching and nursing that hair into a head of healthy shiny strands; and the customer’s positive response to that is awesome. When a woman looks good she feels good.

QSM: And at what point did you decide to make a career out of it? Nathaniel: It was High School my senior year to be exact. I always played around with hair but I took the idea seriously when my counselor Mrs. Cynthia Hargis told me to GO FOR and don’t look back. There was very little opportunity to advance in my hometown so I took a risk and did just what she said. QSM: Have you ever done someone’s hair and they weren’t happy with it? (if yes, how did you handle it) Nathaniel: oh YES! You know sometimes clients see styles on other women that they love and they think it would look great on them. Clients can be stubborn as they don’t always listen to my advice. I give them what they ask for and sometimes THEY HATE IT! I do the best I can to restyle the hair or just simply do it over. When clients leave the salon you want them to feel totally confident about their new look; I mean I am the professional my goal is to make sure she is getting her money’s worth. And then there are times I suggest a new look and they don’t like. My goal is try to include them in the process so they don’t feel overwhelmed. QSM: Throughout your career, you have had the opportunity to touch some pretty important heads. Tell us about your first celebrity head. Tell us about the events that lead up to that moment. Were you nervous? Nathaniel: you know I have actually had a few great opportunities come my way prior to actually accepting them. I declined them out of fear. The one I finally accepted was Erica Campbell (Mary Mary) I almost passed her on to another hairstylist because the fear started to kick in again. I felt I was just not good enough to do such a gig. I prayed about it, and God placed it in my heart “Treat her like you treat all your clients” be professional, alert and ON TIME. lol FEAR is powerful thing only if you ALLOW it to be. QSM: Allow me to congratulate you on your recent awards (one for which I was there for). How does it feel to have people honor you for your accomplishments? Nathaniel: it was sooooo overwhelming and surreal. It feels so good to have someone acknowledge your hard work. I don’t do what I do for awards or rewards but I do it because I am passionate about it. There was so much love in the room from individuals who don’t even know me but follow my career via social media. I was thankful and humbled by it all. God gets all the Glory! QSM: Tell us about one of the hardest moments of your life thus far. Nathaniel: putting my brand together and releasing it to the world. I did not have a blueprint of how to do this business thing. I asked questions, paid attention and made a few mistakes; but I took the scariest risk ever. QSM: What is THE most memorable piece of advice that you have gotten and who did it come from? Nathaniel: I have honestly gotten so much advice from many people. However, Mrs. Mary Robinson (My play aunty) simply told me “Go and do what your destined to do, sure it will get rocky along the way but it’s all for your good. “ that has stuck with me along with so many other things. Sometimes we have to look back over how far we have come and that should give the push to keep going.

QSM: You took a picture while you were holding the Pride Flag, and you talked about wanting to get more involved. What was that moment like for you and what does getting more involved look like for you? Nathaniel: you know that was a very memorable moment for me simply because it took some time and a lot of nerve to live in my truth. With that choice I lost a lot of family support and I was left to journey on by myself; and I was OK with that. Having pride goes far beyond sexual orientation, one can have pride for being a strong black woman or prideful of their culture. The Pride flag represents courage to just BE YOU no matter how uncomfortable it makes the next person. I refuse to live in fear, that’s not a good quality of life. Tomorrow is not promised we must embrace each moment God has given us. And I plan on doing that and more .

QSM: What advice can you offer other up and coming entrepreneurs? Nathaniel: stay focused on the VISION. Continue to educate yourself and don’t be afraid of change. People change every day so your business has to shift with their demands. And always keep positive, aware, loyal & honest people in your circle. Don’t be afraid to befriend someone that doesn’t look like you. QSM: What’s next for Nathaniel Jaye? Nathaniel: oh SOOO much I can’t give you all the details just pay close attention. No seriously, I am looking to do more things with hair ‘Beyond the chair” the industry is so big and I looking to explore some new things.

QSM: Have you ever modeled? Or ever wanted to become a model? Nathaniel: I am what you call a Social media model lol I never felt like I had what it takes to model; simply because of my size. However, I LOVEE fashion. And I am open to modeling; I will never close the door of opportunity. QSM: You have such an impeccable style to you. You always look well put together from head to toe. Is styling another one of your specialties? Nathaniel: Thank you sooo much I TRY!! it’s so funny I get that question all the time, I love seeing people look their best and sometimes I like to help out as much as I can; especially my big and tall community. If given the opportunity, I would love to expand my brand and experience the fashion industry. To be honest hair, makeup, clothing are all under the same umbrella. QSM: Do you currently have your own shop? (if not, any plans for that?) Nathaniel: I currently have a suite, I did at one time desire a salon and its still on my possibility list, right now I am trying branch out in some new things with hair and it will keep on the road a lot. Managing a salon takes a lot dedication and time to make sure its ran smoothly. QSM: As entrepreneurs, we get called upon to do “collaborations”. How do you balance out who will get an invoice and who you will do a favor for? Nathaniel: I have come to this point in my career that I realize doing favors does not always generate future business. I will always do collaborations however; I am limiting how many I do during the year. The Traveling, hotel expenses can be a bit much. When your self-employed you don’t get PTO, so I have to strategically make myself available for the opportunities. I always tell new hair stylist that collaborations are great for building a portfolio and great networking (which I love to do). If these people really love your work ethic and skill they will not mind paying the invoice; you have already built the relationship so they know what you’re capable of.

ON THE BIG AND TALL OF IT

The world has a new trend these days, they are called the Big and Tall. Understood and misunderstood! A few years ago, I remember sitting in a coffee shop browsing through a magazine and came across this article about Zach Miko. If you do not know, he was Target’s first Big and Tall male model in 2015 and became the first Big and Tall male model to ever be signed with a major modeling agency in 2017. The simple fact that someone who has shopped in the same clothing section I have shopped all of my life had made it was an absolute joy. Then immediately, I realized the struggle had really just begun. Just like that, the Big and Tall male model had become an unofficial trend in the society we live in. Like our female model counterparts in the Plus Industry, Big and Tall models are at a new beginning of learning. This will not be an instantly accepted thing. It will be hard to swallow for many and there will definitely be new Big and Tall models that do not understand the game fully. It is inevitable that the struggle to be fully accepted will match the fight of our Plus-Size female models. The fight for acceptance for male models starts by knowing a few key terms. “Big and Tall,” “Brawn,” and “Plus-Size,” are all terms used for the newly trending male models, but let’s explore that a bit. Each term should be approached with an open mind because each has the ability to describe a male model. I think the definitions and the composition of the words are often taken out context by society from their true meanings. Let’s start with Big and Tall. There are actually three words in the composition of this term. Big, which insinuates a male’s body growing outward, and Tall, which insinuates a male’s body growing upward, are key words in this term. However, the coordinating conjunction word of “and” is also there. Unfortunately and unfairly, the immediate thought is to think that Big and Tall in a male must always exist together. This is not true! A short male can be big and tall male can be thin, but yet both would have to shop in the same section to be fitted properly. Properly is the keyword!

About Marco Mays aka Sir Icon He is the paragon of a classy male with sophistication and style. With the combination of his love for fashion and self-empowerment, Marco has made a name for himself in events management and image development. This alone causes mental and inclusive disparities of what or who is a Big and Tall male model in the industry. Many will argue that I do not fall in that category, but I must disagree. In a 2015 Cosmopolitan article, Miko said, “I’ve struggled with self-esteem and self-image issues my entire life.” This statement speaks directly to the core of every male that shops in the Big and Tall section. The mental struggle happens first before we go shopping and then the physical struggle happens when we shop. Every man, including myself, had to deal with that one thing: finding something to fit properly! Next, let’s look at Brawn. According to the 2018 MerriamWebster dictionary, the definition is muscular strength and it is often used to compare physical strength to intelligence. Using the term to describe a Big and Tall male model could refer to how strong he is and not his physical stature. It also could suggest that strength and intelligence in that male cannot exist. l. The physical strength and intelligence of a human being does not always mandate their position or title in a career; however the strength of their intelligence always will. Every Big and Tall model should arm themselves with strong knowledge of the modeling industry. It is the mental game you must win to make it in this industry. That is the true Brawn! Finally, let’s look at Plus-Size. This term was given to the Big and Tall male model by default. It was inherited from the PlusSize female models in the industry who started the exact same way our male models are doing today. This descriptive term, Plus-Size, came from women’s clothing sections in many retail stores with the same name. However, the men’s clothing section of equal footing is called Big and Tall in retail stores. This causes many not to use the term. Some say to use this term to describe a male could possibly have a negative undertone for the Big and Tall male model because men have never been described as Plus-Size before this trend. On the other hand, the term Plus-Size has many positive meanings for the Plus Industry. Why can’t a male model use it to elevate and escalate the Big and Tall industry?
