FROM THE DESK OF Tawana Blassingame Founder & Editor in Chief

Welcome to the September 2018 issue of Queen Size Magazine. Let’s talk about support. If you follow me on social media then you may have seen the long debate on my fb page in regards to support. One of the questions I asked was we supporting people or are we supporting an industry. Many of us won’t support another person who may be hosting an event simply because they “don’t care for” the person. We all have our reasons for doing or not doing something. But I do think that it is important to try and look at the BIG picture; we are an industry looking to succeed. And while I firmly believe in brand protection, that you should not attach your brand to everything; I also believe in not being judgmental. I truly believe that if it is a person’s passion that they will figure it out; we all started from somewhere. So unless there is a detrimental reason why an event should not be supported by others, let’s try not to blast each other on social media. If it’s not for you then keep it moving. As with every issue, I truly thank each and every person that had a hand in making Queen Size Magazine possible. And on behalf of myself and Queen Size Magazine, I would like to thank all of our readers; without you we would not still be here. We would love to hear your feedback. Email us at queensizemagazine@gmail.com and let us know what you like, don’t like and/or want to see in future issues. We value your opinion.

Funny how times flies, whether you are having fun or not. One minute you are celebrating your child’s first birthday and then the next minute you are sitting in an admissions office registering him for college. WAIT… that one was personal; but you get it. It is so easy to get caught up in our everyday lives. We spend a majority of our time working, coming home to care for the family and if you have a significant other they too need some of that time. The weekends are spent running errands and other things. But what about you? When do you DO YOU? That is always the million dollar question with me. I had a conversation with a friend recently and it really made me think to myself; what about me. When we lie in bed and say “I need a vacation”, do we actually take one? Some of you might, but I cannot remember the last vacation that I took for me. One that was spent with me getting some down town. When do I have the time? I know quite a few people that religiously take vacations and I often ask myself and them, how? When? But the answer is always the same. We make time for everyone but ourselves. Life is so short and we have to stop running ourselves into the ground. Life can take such a physical and emotional toll of us. So it is important to have fun and enjoy live. I polled some people on social media and was surprised at how people actually get in that ME time. Not everyone takes vacations because people enjoy different things. Self care simply means taking care of self. Be sure to get those annual checkups, and take care of your mind, body and soul. You can’t take care of everyone else if you are not taking care of yourself. Eventually it will catch up with you. Here are some helpful tips that I got from my social media friends; hopefully it is something that you can adapt for yourself as a way to take care of you.

1.

Binge watch some of your favorite shows that you don’t normally have time to watch. I do this sometimes as well. No work, just me and the TV. 2. Pick up the sticks and play video games. A lot of people (not just men) enjoy spending their downtime playing games. Don’t knock it. I love me some GTA! 3. Catch up on some much needed rest. There is nothing wrong with just sleeping in once in a while. Our bodies and minds need it sometimes. 4. Take a nice long bubble bath with some candles and just relax yourself. Some people like to read a good book while they are in there as well. Go for it! Just don’t fall asleep in the bathtub and drown yourself please. 5. Prayer and meditation was another suggestion. 6. Have a spa day just for you. Go get yourself pampered! Get your hair done, nails and feet done, a massage and/or facial, hang out in the sauna; whatever you like to do at the spa. 7. Take yourself out on a date. Go to a movie and dinner. Why not? 8. Yoga… This is definitely on my to do list. 9. Go hang out on the beach by yourself and enjoy the calmness of the water. Don’t forget your sunscreen and maybe a good book. Or perhaps take you a couple of issue of Queen Size Magazine to read. (shameless plug) 10. Treat yourself to a nice concert. I love music; it is so very soothing to me. Whatever it is that you decide to do, just do it and do it for you. Leave everything behind and just do it with no regrets. We deserve to enjoy OUR lives.

7 FOODS THAT CAN BOOST A MAN’S SEX LIFE

WATERMELON Watermelon contains L-Citrulline which is an amino acid that can help make your erection harder. L-citrulline converts to L-arginine once it’s in your body and stimulates the production of nitric oxide; which then increases blood flow to the penis, strengthening erections. Much like Viagra does.

SPINACH Olive Oyl (from Popeye) was on to something. I guess we now know why she was really with him. All that spinach made his muscles strong alright. Studies have shown that spinach helps fuel erections. The secret to its penis-enhancing power lies in its high arginine content. It’s the same principle as watermelons; when the amino acid hits your system, it converts to nitric oxide, which helps initiate and maintain erections.

BLACK RASPBERRIES According to Dr. Keesha Ewers, founder and chief medical officer of The Academy For Integrative Medicine with a Ph.D. in Sexology, black raspberries boost your libido and increase sexual stamina.

AVOCADOS Avocados aids in heart health for men’s erectile function and aids in blood flow for women’s sexual pleasure. Double pleasure; feed her some too.

FOODS TO BOOST A MAN’S SEX LIFE | QSM

FIGS Studies have proven that figs are associated with boosted fertility. They also contain magnesium and an amino acid which have been linked to sex hormone production and improved circulation.

9

OYSTERS This one comes as no surprise, I’m sure. Oysters have long been considered the most common of all the aphrodisiacs. Oysters contain zinc, which plays a key role in the creation of hormones. So if you like Oysters, eat up and enjoy the benefits. I’m sure she will.

ALMONDS Almonds have been known to act as a sexual stimulant and aid with fertility. Almonds are rich in minerals that are important for sexual health and reproduction, such as zinc, selenium, and vitamin E. Zinc helps enhance libido and sexual desire.

MARCO MAYS | QSM

25 QSM: Marco, let’s take this thing from the top. Tell me about life growing up for you. Marco: Well, it started on the great day of October 16, 1971, in Tuskegee, Alabama with the coming of Marco Antony Mays. I am the grandson of sharecroppers from the deep south, son to Bob and Lonnie Mays but Sir Icon to the world. Growing up was quite an interesting experience as a Black Gay Male in the Bible Belt region of the country. My family was always loving and supporting of me being the best person I could be on this earth. I was taught to always treat others, no matter who they are, the exact same way I wanted to be treated even if they did not treat me the same. I was always the tallest and the skinny awkward kid in the group which made me an extreme introvert. I immediately turned to books, fiction and non-fiction, to create my worlds to get away. Knowledge was my best friend most of the time! I graduated high school as Valedictorian and went directly into college at Auburn University at Mont-gomery. Two years later and a “D” in a Philosophy class, I joined the Navy. After six years in the Navy, I discharged to work in the Intelligence Field supporting classified government contracts for agencies like INS, FBI, CIA, IRS and etc. QSM: Tell us something about Marco that most people would be surprised to learn. Marco: I think that most people would be surprised to know that I know how to operated just about any big machinery and tractor trailer truck. In between growing up on the farms in the summer and working with my Father in his lumbering company, a boy had to learn how to get around. Driving tractors, caterpillars, and backhoes were pretty common. It has been a minute but I know I still can do it. Oh and I love driving big vehicles. Especially on the highway! QSM: Yessss. I know that’s right! Let’s talk about this modeling career of yours. When and how did that journey begin? Marco: I started modeling in local fashion shows in Montgomery, AL while in college with my cousin in the 90’s; we were just having fun! I was super intrigued by male models in the “International Male” magazine and felt that I could do what they did. My dreams to pursue modeling were somewhat squashed when my mother jokingly said to me one day, “You don’t have the body to model!” Remember, I was still in my introvert skinny and thin phase. Then in 1996, I was walking across the street in Washington, D.C. headed to brunch with one of my best friends when this guy yells to me to come over. He asked me to model in his fashion show and that was my first runway show. That show fueled the fire to do more! I started freelance modeling in fashion shows in DC, Baltimore, New Jersey and New York. Most of my career in modeling was freelance but it took me across the country and I learned a lot. I was doing shows in Atlanta, Chicago, Miami, Texas, and Florida. When I moved to New York in 2009, I finally signed to a modeling agency, Model Management. I was only signed with them for about a year, which was mostly the development board with one casting under my belt. Back to freelancing I went. Since that point, I would model or walk runway shows only when asked. Again, I was blessed with work throughout these years from runway shows, magazines, and TV commercials. I still love the camera and it still loves me. I think when you know the basic model etiquettes, the skill renews instantly when put back in the front of the camera.

WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM| SEPTEMBER 2018 ISSUE

26 QSM: When was the business version of Marco born? Tell us about that moment. Marco: I think the business version has always been in me, to make or create something needed to help yourself or others. As a young introvert, I used my imagination to create environments to help me. I think that was when it was born, so to speak! I use that same creative tactic to this day in my current business. QSM: As a business man, what was your first endeavor? Marco: My first endeavor with business was in 2008. I opened my first company, Eye 4 Details. It was a Lifestyle Management company. I learned so much about being in business for yourself while still working for someone else. A lot of hard choices were made to make it work. People often think working for yourself is easy, but it is the total opposite! Managing clients that often were trying to take advantage of my newness in the career field was most definitely a huge factor in learning the importance of self worth from a business, financial, and personal perspective. My second company, INUR Image, was a merger of my company Eye 4 Details and Tiffany Rashel’s Dra-ma Free Tea Company. We focused on Lifestyle Management from the image development and life coach perspective. This company was an immediate segue to my current company, M2. M2 focuses on image development and events management. QSM: Pretty dope Marco…. Let’s talk Full Figured Fashion for a moment. You are the Front End Opera-tions and Hospitality Coordinator. How long have you had these positions? What are your responsibili-ties? And how did this opportunity even fall in your lap? Marco: Yes, I have been a part of the Full Figured Fashion Week’s staff since 2012. The two positions actually are one position; it just makes it easier to say them together....LOL! My responsibilities range from first welcoming a guest to an event, to saying goodnight to each guest upon exiting an event. I also manage, with the help of the amazing Martha Hunter, on average of about 150 volunteers who usually sign up for the FFFWeek events. Then there is security, step and repeat walls, photographer’s pit, FFFWeek’s promotional vending table, and seating guest at each event. Oh and I managed the lists for all VIPs, Media, Sponsors, and Staff. I have attended FFFWeek since conception in 2009. So, I fully supported the Plus Industry and Gwen DeVoe’s vision for FFFWeek. There came an opening for this position and Events Management was my thing. Gwen said she needed me and I simply said yes. It was a no brainer! The simple request she gave me was, “I want each guest that attend FFFWeek to feel like a VIP because they are!” The rest is history and I absolutely love my FFFWeek Family. QSM: There is just so much to Marco that is not even in your bio. You also have your own unisex fra-grance. I’ve smelt it and it smells amazing. Tell everyone about that please. Marco: That only means you will need to interview me again...LOL! Yes, Trebor! It is a unisex fragrance oil with a smooth, rich and intoxicating blend of exotic woody musks, floral bouquets and sparkling citrus nuances. It is for that person who wants their scent to evoke an emotion. Yes, Trebor! Shameless plug! Purchase on www.marcomays.com! I had worn this scent for years until one day on travel in the Chicago O’hare Airport this lady suggested that I sell it. The

WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|SEPTEMBER 2018 ISSUE

FEATURED STORY branding started immediately and the fragrance was named after my father, Robert. I simply spelled his name backwards as Trebor. Growing up my Dad always liked to smell good, even if he was going to cut lumber in the woods. He still does it today! So I thought it would be a great idea to honor him with his name on my signature fragrance. QSM: When did you get the idea to do the brunch? Marco: “The Brunch with Marco Mays” idea actually had dual starting places. The first idea and name of the brunch was “Brothers Who Brunch” came from a group of local Montgomery gentlemen and we simple wanted to make a difference in the community. The group was dragging its feet with everyone having a busy schedule. So, my imagination kicked in again and I absorb it! That was the first starting place. The second starting place happened while helping a friend setup for a book signing in a downtown Montgomery hotel. This gentleman who was sitting in the lobby watching me setup came over and asked if he could speak to me for a second. He proceeds to tell me that he feels that I am a “people collector.” That I was a conduit that attracted people to help them with their greatness and I would need to start an event to do just that. Of course, I was like “oh ok,” but then it hit me immediately. Since “Brothers Who Brunch” did not come to life, I would make the brunch come to life by putting my name on it. Thus, “The Brunch with Marco Mays” was born. That gentleman’s name was Pastor Rudy Rasmus of St. John’s Church in Houston, Texas. He told me I had an open invitation to his church whenever I am in Houston. When I googled him, I was even more in amazement. He is Beyonce and the Knowles family Pastor! Get out right! QSM: I know that’s right!!!! For people who don’t know what the brunch is all about, can you explain? Marco: “The Brunch with Marco Mays” is a platform to bridge people together through social interac-tion while discussing universal topics. It is the perfect combination of networking, dining, and empow-erment. The intimate environment of about 20 people creates a comfortable judgement-free zone to speak your opinion about any topic matter that is on the lesson plan of that day. The goal of each guest is to leave with the challenge to inspire others from the inspiration they have gained from guests at the brunch. Be that authentic you! QSM: Let’s get personal. People see the glitz and glamour; they see that fame but don’t have any idea of the struggles that happened to get to this point. Tell us about some of your struggles. Marco: Yes, society, especially in social media, has a way of creating this false reality that there is no struggle. I have been homeless; suffer from depression, experienced substance abuse, and the ultimate struggle of all... I am human! I feel extremely blessed on all the accomplishments I have achieved in my life thus far, but I am even more excited about the blessings that are to come. God allows us to experience things in life so that we have reference points for when they arise again. They are like road markers on a trip to know that you have been that way before.

MARCO MAYS | QSM

27

We as human often ignore those markers and find ourselves riding in a loop. Doing the same thing over and over will always get you the same results! I am humble and respectful to no ends to every living thing on this planet. You never know what someone is going or been through, so I accept them at what I have been through. My homelessness fueled my depression and substance abuse at that time in my life. It was a dark place and hard. To know my own self worth was my key out of it! Once a human being experiences those types of things in life, it always stays with you. So, I embrace the light and positive energy at all cost from each person I encounter simply because I know struggle exist. QSM: WOW!!! Now while we are getting personal (clears throat)……. Are you single? Marco: Here we go! I knew it was coming! I am OFFICIALLY SINGLE at the moment. I enjoy life to its fullest at all times and trust that that person will come along at the time they are supposed to. Bache-lor’s life is fun, but married with kids sounds inviting also. Until then, party party party! QSM: What are some major mistakes that you have made during your journey? Ones that you have learned the most from. Marco: Not trusting myself would be the biggest major mistake I feel I made along my journey. At that point in my life, I could not trust myself to make the best decisions for the best choices for my own life. I look back now and say, “How was I even at that place?” but life happens to each and every one of us. I experienced it. I got my reference point. I moved on! Another major mistake early on in business was trusting people to keep their word because I always keep my word. It was a hard lesson to learn that I had to be the backup to the backup to what I wanted accomplished. Ironically, people still try to do it but the blessing of discernment is on my side now. I think it is sad for other individuals to cipher off of other’s accomplishments. QSM: How do you find the clients that you’re currently working with in regards to brand development? Marco: I have been blessed since being in business to never have to find clients or leads. They always found me. I would say at least 80% of my clients are by word of mouth or referrals. The other 20% may have simply asked me what I do and said they would like my help. QSM: Without giving away too much, what are some of the lessons that you go through/over with your clients? Marco: I start every single client with a mirror. In order to present your brand in certain way, lets first exam how you present yourself. This process helps me analyze clients from a personal perspective and gain great insight into who they are as a person. I take those details to actively and imaginatively create goal paths with realistic suspense dates. Ironically, it also becomes this self journey for the client by opening up channels of thoughts they may have never thought about. I absolutely love using my imagination to help others!

When you enrolled in college, did you do so with your current career path in mind? Marco: No and Yes! My first attendance to Auburn University at Montgomery in 1990 was to be an Accountant. I discovered about two years in that was not for me. I knew that sitting at a desk pushing numbers was not going to be enough excitement. Fast forward to 2013 where I returned to Auburn University at Montgomery. This time I achieved graduation with a degree in Communications with concentration in Public Relations in 2016. I feel this degree matches my career path perfectly.

up. I would love to have you. You can also find me on all social media channels under the name Marco Mays or @iamsiricon. Thanks again for this journey!

QSM: Who and what inspires you? Marco: I am inspired tremendously by life itself. Life is actually really easy to live when you are com-pletely transparent with yourself. It is not an easy task by no means, but it is a rewarding task. I have learned to respect knowledge on all levels and from all sources. I am always open to receive it and al-ways open to share it. I believe that God created it just that way to help us along our destiny’s walk. That path is designed exclusively for each individual all the way down to those swirly lines on your little toe. No other foot can fit into your footprint! If I had to list who inspire me, I would definitely start with infants and the elderly. The newness of knowledge and the experience of knowledge that they both have excites me about life. My parents are another huge inspiration to me. I love them to no limit because I am who I am because of them. LOL...not just a good gene pool, but a good heart pool! My extended family across the country also inspires me. Some of the immediates that come to mind are Sharon Quinn, Gwen DeVoe, Charles Wilson, Tiffany Rashel, Theo Lassister, Pastor Rudy Rasmus, Icon Robinson, and Ken Williams (Ken Like Barbie) to name a few. QSM: What can we look for from you next Marco? I feel like you are just getting started here, even though you have done so much already. Marco: There is a huge re-branding of Marco Mays coming soon as I transition to completely being a Lifestyle Influencer. I will focus on food, travel, and style. It is kind of a no brainer, since I already do it but I will be dedicating the needed time to do it properly now. Super excited about that! New logo! New colors! Website revamp! The works! A little birdie also told me that something dedicated exclusively for the Big and Tall Male is in the works. Yes, I speak to the animals as well! LOL! Looks like I will be getting back into the modeling/acting world! I will keep you posted! QSM: We appreciate you and all that you do Marco. Keep up the amazing work. Let everyone know where they find/follow you at. Marco: No, the thanks are to you Queen Size Magazine. I was absolutely honored to be interviewed because I am such a fan of your publication. Oh my gosh, it just hit me! I have known just about everyone that has ever been in your magazine. Now I am in it, get out! Sure thing! CAMOUFLAGE YOUR FLAWS By Meesha Ann

As women, we have areas on our bodies that we struggle with. More than often, most of us use our clothing to camouflage these “problem areas”. To correct this problem in the olden days we would wear baggy and/or black clothing. Those days are long gone. Welcome to the twenty-first century of wearing clothes that complement our full figure. Here are some tips in dealing with our “problem area” or what I like to call the “work-in-progress” areas.

ARMS If you have problems showing your arms, I oftentimes would recommend an attire with sheer or lace on the arm or slit in the arm attire. Camouflage your flaws.

STOMACH I often struggle with this and in the past, I would try to correct this by wearing body shapers. Epic fail!! I like feeling comfortable in my clothing, Thank You!! Instead I would recommend wearing outfits that has decoys around the waistline. Camouflage your flaws.

LEGS A nice pair of pants and/or skirt with a split in it can fix “work-in-progress” on your legs. Camouflage your flaws.

Jessica “JMarie” White Thanks to an opportunity from Honey’s Child Boutique, (a Saint Louis based boutique specializing in fashion apparel for plus size women), JMarie fell in love with modeling. Plus size top model, JMarie has been non-stop since gracing her presence on the runway 3 years ago. She works as a print, commercial and runway model in the US. Born and raised in the Midwest, she has a huge passion for flaunting her God-given curves in magazine spreads, newspapers, online, on television and of course, down the catwalk. She’s been featured in The Saint Louis Post Dispatch, Saint Louis American Newspaper, Saint Louis Best Bridal, I AM ESTL Magazine, Fox2 News (Saint Louis, MO), Coverings Magazine, Miss October in the Miss Diva Kurves 2018 Calendar, and on Honey’s Child Boutique, Ashley Stewart, Bjuled Couture, and Sydney’s Closet social media pages.

JMarie has worked with talented powerhouses such as Qristyl Frazier Designs, Liza B handbags, Mia Grace Bridal, and many others. She has had the opportunity to model for the following productions: Full Figured Fashion Week (2018), Pulp Fashion Week Paris (Paris, France) (2017), The Women’s Closet Exchange (2017), The Curvy Fashionista Style Expo (2017), Saint Louis Fashion Week (2016), Saint Louis Natural Hair and Black Culture Expo (2016) and Phat Girl Fresh Life Styled (2016), just to name a few. Always eager for new opportunities to diversify her portfolio, and to continue to bring awareness to the public to include curves on all media platforms, Jessica is constantly seeking to work with new clients and photographers. May the doors and windows of opportunity continue to open for this 5’11” brickhouse.

BUSINESS

A

shley M. Walker Biography My name is Ashley Walker (aka Msbeyoudoyou on all social platforms). I am a mother of one daughter, a public school teacher, and a financial advisor. I always tell people that I am a model, fashion blogger, and motivational speaker part time, but with a full time attitude. I am fortunate to have a great support system that allows me to work between family, careers and my businesses with my best efforts. I am a published, petite plus size model who promotes self-love and body positivity. I began modeling while encouraging myself and others to Love and Live Life Our Way; and through that I found my sole purpose! I began my modeling career October 2016 and credit my photographer and manager Alfred Beverly II, of Charis Solutions Photography for me being able to hit the industry by storm and gain so much experience in such a short period of time. I’m doing more than just walking runways and taking pretty photos; I am touching and empowering others with my work and fulfilling my purpose to help others see that they can do exactly what they want to do and be absolutely beautiful inside and out while doing it. I am also a published Fashion and Lifestyle blogger; I launched my own blog January 2017. Msbeyoudoyou. com provides my followers with doses of fashion, modeling tips, and encouragement to always “Walk Beyond the Standard” for their goals and dreams. I am not just a model and fashion blogger, I am someone who has found passion in aiding in the success and happiness of others. I’m here to empower, uplift, inspire, promote self-love, exude body positivity, innovate, transcend beauty standards, while fueling you to simply be you and do you as you Live and Love every minute of life!!!! Through my efforts from motivational speaking I feel there is a need, so I am launching Fortify Talent; a consultation agency which will be a place where people of the Golden Triangle here in Texas, can come out to get resources and tools to cut their learning curve in half when working to build in the industry by first building themselves from the inside out. I have been fortunate enough to grace the pages of BTFL Magazine, a magazine based in Baltimore Maryland, Snap Model Magazine, a California based magazine and walk stages for Ashley Stewart in New York, The TCFStyle expo in Atlanta, 1426 Curves Fashion Week in Florida and Houston, National Curves Day Honors in Washington DC, was crowned Miss Fashion Week Plus Model of the year in Miami, District of Curves in Washington DC, shot with Lane Bryant and of course, Queen Size Magazine. I also volunteered for Full Figured Fashion Week 2018 in NYC. I hope to expand across international waters very soon further expanding my brand and voice to reach and empower as many souls as I can.

42 QSM: Who is Ashley? Not model or blogger Ashley; but the Ashley not found in your bio? Ashley: Ashley is the single mother working hard each day to provide the life for her teenage daughter she feels she deserves; Ashley is a successful woman today who was that teenage mother where life could’ve gone either way. With a strong support system, discipline, and hard work I am the Ashley you see today, a mother, a teacher, a daughter, a sister, your everyday woman working hard to be great.

requirements on the flyer. Of course, my body didn’t quite fit within the stats listed. I was the right size, but I did not meet the height requirement. I mulled over if I should go or not go, because I didn’t want to waste their time and mine but something kept eating at me to go. Last minute, I decided to show up. I walked in and gave the items listed to bring and they talked a bit amongst themselves then asked me to walk. After I was done, they told me that I was casted. They said when I walked in, they said, “man she’s short but it’s something about her” and I’ve been showing up ever since.

QSM: Can you share what you do for a living when you are not modeling and blogging? Ashley: When I’m not modeling and blogging, I am an elementary special education teacher and a financial professional. I spend my days teaching my amazing students with autism all subjects and how to function in everyday life, then in the evenings I teach adults how to make money work for them through different avenues of financial planning.

QSM: What made you want to get your feet wet with modeling? Ashley: I actually didn’t start off wanting to be the person doing the modeling. I did some favors for a friend in taking some pictures in her clothes for her site, and then a boutique who saw those photos contacted me. I then did them a favor and took some photos in their clothes too. We used to find interesting ways to merge fashion with our financial services business to get catch their attention and get resources to those in financial distress at the same time so we had mixers like, “Fashion and Finance”. From this and the power of social media, people thought I was modeling professionally and begin inquiring how they could do it too and if we could help them. I didn’t realize there were as many people in my small area that really wanted career in this industry as there are, without a ton of resources and ways to make that happen. I then decided to become that resource, but knew I couldn’t help anyone unless I did it myself and the rest is history. I have been on this journey ever since.

QSM: Pretty interesting. Tell us more about your Financial Services business. Ashley: I am a licensed financial professional at WalkerFinancials. I am affiliated with World Financial Group where I received some of my training. I assist with debt management, life insurance, wills and trusts, 401k’s, annuities, and health insurance. I educate my clients to be able to learn how money works so they can essential make decisions about their finances on their own and I assist them with the vehicle to carry it out. No one knows your families wants and needs better than you do, so you should be the one In charge of your plan. Ashley: You are doing a heck of a lot. But they say all millionaires have multiple streams of income. WalkerFinancials is your own company? Ashley: That’s right, 6-7 streams of income is the suggested target to maintain to sustain wealth that can be transferred to generations so that’s what I’m working for. Yes, once I got trained and licensed with WFG I started WalkerFinancials which is my own business in the financial industry. QSM: Awesome. I love it. You also do public speaking correct? How did you get into that? Tell us about that first time. Ashley: Thank you so much. Yes, from the beginning I knew my purpose in my journey was to encourage and empower others while empowering myself to love myself first and not be afraid to live life my way. A part of that is of course showing others your journey and allowing them to travel with you, but it’s also important to take the time to speak life into others as well. Like you asked earlier, “who is Ashley outside of modeling and blogging”, and I feel it is just as important for others to hear the real me and what it really takes to deliver all that they see. Motivational speaking not only helps others, it builds you and makes the journey that much more rewarding. WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|SEPTEMBER 2018 ISSUE

QSM: Tell us about your first speaking engagement. How it came about, how you felt and what you spoke on. Ashley: My first speaking engagement was to a group of girls between the ages of 9-19 from a local organization called the Nakid Foundation. I was contacted by them and asked if I could be a speaker because my brand and what I represented was aligned with everything the Foundation stood for, promoted, and poured into the girls of the community. I was honored to be asked and very humbled for the amazing duty I had been charged with. I automatically knew I would speak on the significance of “Self Love” in order to build a happy and successful life. I feel so passionate about this because self love is the foundation for the best choices and decisions that will determine the condition of our lives as adults, and it all starts when we are children. Many adults today don’t really know what self love looks and feels like and I was one of those adults some years ago, so that’s why mentorship is so important to me today. QSM: Now how did you get into blogging? Ashley: Early on when I set out to learn about the industry to be able to help others I knew that I would have difficulty with my reach because I am from a small town in Southeast Texas that most people in key places of the industry’s have never heard of let alone traveled to or even through so I needed another vehicle to make myself visible. I didn’t even know what blogging was until I started training at my modeling academy and they suggested a start following others to increase my following. At this time I had IG and FB only and I may have had 300 followers with 3 images on there since I had been on social media. As I got familiar with IG, I noticed that many of the successful and well known people working in the industry, not just models, but MUA’s influencers etc had separate websites. At this point I still didn’t know the difference of a model/ influencer and a blogger or how they can be intertwined to build and even better platform. I first decided to simply use my website as another tool to show my professionalism, my body of work, and just to showcase what I was doing and how I was getting it done for a quick and easy way for people to learn and get ideas and in turn do it too if they wanted to. Little did I know that that was a form of blogging and that it’s what I had become. Over time my direction for the blog has developed more and I’ve become more strategic which of course came with time and experience, but the bases is the same. Through blogging I am able to empower and inspire other by showing them how a regular everyday person can make a dream that seemed unobtainable a reality and how to live and love life their way, free from judgment while looking absolutely fabulous while doing it. QSM: I remember being with you when someone said to you “I know who you are; I follow your blog”. How do those moments make you feel? Ashley: Those moments are absolutely surreal and they keep me humbled because like I said, I am a country girl from a small country town who always had a thirst for more and to have an impact on others. I used to joke and say “I’m gonna be famous and I was meant to be rich”, lol!! These days, those words are far from a joke to me, but have taken on a very different meaning. Yes, I will be famous and rich lol, but I want to be known by others for doing good for others, the community, people I know and people I don’t know all the same. If on my journey I get rich I want to turn around WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|SEPTEMBER 2018 ISSUE

BUSINESS

and utilize those resources to continue to help and empower other, just on a whole new level. So when I hear those words, they are a confirmation that I am not working in vain, I am on the right path, and if I just remain consistent, I will serve my purpose and make God and others proud. QSM: What you say are three of the most important traits that one must possess to be successful? Ashley: Three of the most important traits one must possess to be successful are 1. Optimism, one thing that can kill a dream fast is negativity so keep it far away, 2. Resilience, because we can never know success without failure so you have to be able to persevere and pick yourself up after a fall to get right back to whatever it is you’re working for, 3. Humility, we must always remain humble at what we stage we are at on our journey to always remain a student of the lesson for the higher you reach, the harder you can fall. QSM: Let’s talk about Fortify Talent for a second. (Another stream; got it. lol). I know it is going to be a consultation company, but is this model based, financial based? What? Ashley: Lol!!!! Yes!!! Fortify Talent of course is what started this entire journey. I set out to learn and gain the tools necessary to come into my community and provide a place for others wanting to get their footing in the entertainment industry, resources to do just that. It is a consultation hub because I will not be anyone’s manager or agent or anything like that lol, that’s too time consuming and would take me away from fueling my other streams of income. It’s for people wanting to get started in the entertainment industry as a whole, not just focused on models. It’s for models, designers, MUA’s, Hairstylist photographers, dancers, choreographers, singers, rappers, producers etc. On my continued journey I have made it a point and will continue to focus on my relationships and growing those authentically to be successful at networking and gaining knowledge and experience, partnerships and collaborations that can I turn help others in all walks of the industry. Competition is dead and Collaboration is key in this and I learned that very early. Now a little healthy competition now and then isn’t bad, but should be kept in perspective. The foundation of Fortify Talent is to help grow the “Whole Person”, resources for fitness, healthy lifestyles, maintaining budgets, retirement for business owners and entrepreneurs etc will all be made available at Fortify Talent for that very purpose. QSM: You rock on so many levels girl. I love and admire your drive; keep up the great work. Any final thoughts to leave the readers with? Ashley: Awwwe thank you so much Queen, but it’s truly amazing people like you that make things possible by being a voice when others can’t get the word out so I honor and appreciate you. I would like to leave them with how important it is to have someone or a few special people behind you, in your corner, rooting for you because this industry is tough and not built for the weak. If it weren’t for my manager, photographer, confidant, and friend Alfred Beverly of CharisSolutions Photography, I could not be where I am today. There is no MsBeYouDoYou without him and he is my partner with Fortify Talent. So, it can be done alone but a lifeline or someone to help cushion your falls a bit will be helpful.
