FROM THE DESK OF Tawana Blassingame Founder & Editor in Chief
Welcome to the September 2019 issue of Queen Size Magazine. THE KING SIZE ISSUE It is all about the Big and Tall Men in this issue. This is not the first issue that we have dedicated to our Big and Tall models but since it was so well received previously, we are giving it to you again. Queen Size Magazine initially started out as an all-women’s fashion magazine but of course, we had to show our love and support to male models. As of January 1st of 2018 we’ve officially gone co-ed. It was a pleasure to sit down and talk with all of the men about how fashion has played a huge part in their lives. We have learned that we as women are not alone in our struggles. Our Big and Tall men are experiencing the same issues with finding clothing to fit our bodies. I have recently learned of a bigger issue when it comes to our men wanting to dress up. If they are stepping out stylish, their selections become scarcer. This issue is addressed in some of the interviews with the male model spotlights. In this issue, our cover model, Chris Perez, discusses how he fell into the big and tall modeling industry. He shares his thoughts on the good and the bad. I’d also like to briefly touch on an image from our previously issue that was not received well by some. After consulting with professionals on the matter, it is understood how the model’s image would have been offensive. The information provided to us was not known at the time; but now that we are aware we wanted to offer our sincere apologies for publishing it. The images have been removed. As with every issue, I truly thank each and every person that had a hand in making Queen Size Magazine possible. And on behalf of myself and Queen Size Magazine, I would like to thank all of our readers; without you we would not still be here. We would love to hear your feedback. Email us at queensizemagazine@gmail.com and let us know what you like, don’t like and/or want to see in future issues. We value your opinion. Photo by PDrew Photography

Summer weekends are all about the barbecue. Grilling has become an American staple, and many home grill masters yearn to take it to the next level, impressing their friends and families with tasty, mouthwatering smoked beef. Smoking is a timeless technique that elevates the beef people crave by delivering rich flavor and tenderness. What do you need to become a pit master? Here are the basics from the Beef, It’s What’s For Dinner. National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Culinary Center, funded by the Beef Checkoff. WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|SEPTMEBER 2019 ISSUE
SMOKING BASICS FOR MASTERING THE ART OF DELECTABLE BEEF | BRANDPOINT
SELECTING YOUR BEEF Large cuts, such as brisket, roasts and ribs, are prime candidates for smoking, but even a beef burger can benefit from a hint of smoke. Some of the most popular cuts of beef for smoking are: * Back ribs - A barbecue must, these ribs are flavorful and a great value. * Brisket - This smoking classic is a fan favorite - sliced or shredded, can’t go wrong here.
CHOOSING A SMOKER Your smoker should fit your space, budget and preferred heat source. Here are a few options to consider: * Kamado or ceramic smokers use lump charcoal and are very versatile, providing great heat retention and consistent high temperatures.
* Rib-eye steak - Rich and juicy, ribeye is known for exceptional taste and generous marbling.
* Pellet smokers use an electricpowered auger to feed wood pellets into the smoker. They have a grilling area big enough for large cuts of meat.
* Tri-tip roast - Boneless and fairly tender, this rising star is growing in popularity.
* Electric gas smokers are great for beginners, making it easy to select and gauge temperatures.
Regardless of the cut you select, always remember that time, patience and practice pay off - don’t be afraid to tweak your technique to suit your tools and tastes.
* Charcoal smokers are favored for the low, slow cook many pit masters prefer. They offer a more natural flavor, but also need more temperature monitoring.
PICKING THE RIGHT WOOD Once you’ve selected your smoker, you can further customize your smoking experience with different types of wood. Some variations to choose from include: * Hickory is popular for smoking due to its strong, hearty flavor. * Mesquite offers a very smoky flavor, great for cooking smaller cuts for shorter periods. * Oak has a subtle flavor that’s great for larger cuts of meat. * Apple smoke provides a sweeter taste. * Pecan has a rich, sweet, nutty flavor. * Cherry offers a hint of fruitiness. * Maple leads to a sweet, mild smoky flavor. Experimenting with different types of wood allows you to put your signature twist on beef’s craveable flavor profile.
7
DECIDING ON A RUB Next up is creating a rub to complement the flavors provided by the beef and smoke. There are two main types of rubs to consider: * A dry rub typically starts with a base of sugar and salt and incorporates a variety of bold spices and herbs to create a flavorful crust on the outside of the meat. * Wet rubs contain wet ingredients, such as oil, vinegar, citrus juice, Worcestershire sauce or even molasses, combined with dry herbs and spices. One benefit of a wet rub is that the seasonings can have an easier time adhering to the meat. When creating your rub, keep in mind your beef should always be the star of the show. Rubs play a supporting role by enhancing the great taste beef innately brings to a smoker.
Ready to put your skills to the test? Try this recipe for Classic Smoked Beef Brisket from the chefs at the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, a contractor to the Beef Checkoff, who develop recipes for BeefItsWhatsForDinner. com. Classic Smoked Beef Brisket Ingredients * 1 whole beef brisket (approximately 12-13 pounds) * 1/4 cup granulated garlic * 1/4 cup sweet paprika * 1/4 cup cracked black pepper * 2 tablespoons kosher salt Directions Add wood chunks, chips, pellets or charcoal to smoker according to manufacturer’s instructions. Preheat smoker to 225°F. Combine spices in small bowl. Press spices into brisket on all sides and edges. Tip: Brisket may require trimming fat to ensure the rub makes contact with the beef. Place beef on rack in smoker. Set timer for 12 hours. Tip: To prevent dryness and accelerate the cooking process, try the “Texas Crutch” - wrap aluminum foil around the meat along with a little liquid, such as water, juice or beer. Carefully remove beef from smoker after 10 and 1/2 to 11 hours or when temperature reaches 195°F for beef that slices easily. For beef that can be shredded or chunked, carefully remove from smoker at 12 hours or when temperature reaches 205°F. REFRESH YOUR SUMMER WITH DELICIOUS, HEALTHY MOCKTAILS WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|SEPTMEBER 2019 ISSUE
REFRESH YOUR SUMMER WITH DELICIOUS, HEALTHY MOCKTAILS | BRANDPOINT There’s nothing better on a hot summer day than kicking back and relaxing with a cold, tasty and refreshing beverage - and there are so many great options to choose from. But why not add a little excitement to your summer by choosing something to drink that’s fun and colorful, super healthy and delicious, too? You can skip the dehydrating alcohol, artificial flavorings or unhealthy refined sugar and opt to serve up a natural, fruit-based drink - a “mocktail” when you’re planning your next summer soiree, or to enjoy with friends and family of all ages anytime the weather heats up. A mocktail not only replenishes your vital fluids, hydrating you and providing important nutritional content your body needs, but it’s yummy, fun and festive to drink. When you add a super food like a Chiquita banana to your mocktail, you’re adding vitamins and minerals, including vitamin B6, which helps muscles function, boosts your immune system and helps with formation of red blood cells. Chiquita bananas are also a great source of potassium, which can help level out your blood pressure, among other positive benefits. They provide fiber, protein, antioxidants, vitamin C, magnesium and other nutrients to your diet. Another plus? Bananas come in their own handy, naturally biodegradable, portable and easy-to-peel package! No matter what kind of delectable mocktails or fruit smoothies you want to create this summer, adding bananas to the mix will provide a bonus of sweet flavor and a creamy texture to your beverage. Bananas will balance out the flavors of the more tart or acidic fruits you’re using in your recipe, while they also boost the overall nutritional content of your drink. Another great thing about mocktails? They are super easy to prepare, taking only about 10 minutes of prep time. All you need is a blender and the ingredients of your choice! Serve each mocktail over crushed ice or ice cubes in a fun decorative glass and add a tiny umbrella or a small fruit skewer with berries and banana slices for a festive and delicious party presentation. Try one of these vegan, gluten-free and lactose-free recipes for delightfully refreshing, yummy mocktails:

EUSTACE COLLENS JR. QSM: Eustace, welcome back. You were recently featured on the cover of one of our previous issues. What have you been up to since? Eustace: What have I been up to? Hmmm…. I’ve been grinding trying to get a seat at the table to bring awareness to big and tall models, silver fox models (men and women) and our queen size models. I do this to inspire others and for the passion of fashion and not for the money. I am an established man who have no problem speaking out against promoters, designers, and magazine editors who still don’t practice size and age inclusiveness in fashion. I have challenged them to put their money where their mouth is. I don’t have to be in their show, magazine, or clothing, my bills will be paid. I am trying to bring awareness to the industry to let them know that all the above are relevant and marketable in this fashion industry. This is what the industry needs if you are going to call your show diverse. I’ve been doing a lot of photo shoots with different models and photographers to show diversity. I’ve been published 16 times; 4 of them covers. I am now signed with 2 agencies and I am a Brand Ambassador for Miguel Wilson collection @MIGUELWILSONCOLLECTION; the number one men’s store in Atlanta. I am now being sought by different designers and flown out of state to do shows. Several of my runway shows have gone viral. Big shout out to (PCW Images) Paul Williams who made my first video go viral. My viral runway show has even caught the attention of Gospel Great Bebe Winans who even posted it on his instagram page. This only shows that older models are marketable and there is an audience for them. QSM: Remind people how long you have been modeling please. Eustace: I have been modeling since J.H.S. I am now 55 years old, do the math. Lol!

QSM: When you are on set and in front of the camera, you exude such confidence. Have you always been a confident man? Eustace: Believe it or not I am always nervous before a shoot. I take each photo shoot very seriously. I approach it strategically because it’s a job. I do a complete dress rehearsal in the mirror. I have a folder of magazines and newspaper clippings of models that I made to my personal manual of modeling. I study my poses in the mirror with my outfits on to get a preview on how I look. Photographers love when you come with your own ideas and poses which is a good recipe for a great photo shoot.

QSM: Where did you get your model training? Eustace: Back in the 80’s there was Barbizon School of Modeling for the privilege. Then there was a workshop for minorities of color run by a gentleman name Cedric Jose Washington. It was more than a workshop it was home. He taught us self-confidence and how to be appreciative and humble, not like these new young models who feel a sense of entitlement or that they are divas or stars with self-made titles. I was taught the basics, just like a boxer. I learned techniques and then I execute them; and most off all combinations. Example full turn into a reserve turn. I watch the European style of walking which is the standard form of walking in 95% of current shows. Then was fortunate to experience The Ebony Fashion fair shows which was catered to the minorities. These shows were more free, artistic and soulful which is missing now in today’s shows QSM: You are known for bringing props (and props) to the runway and to your photoshoots. Where did this idea come from? Eustace: I use to be an exotic dancer in my younger days. I wasn’t a local or state to state dancer. I was internationally known. I went under the stage name SIZZLELEAN. I used props in my show and fused it with fashion. So now the props I use in my exotic days are now being used in fashion. Lol. I am teaching models to bring more accessories to shows. I remember posting a picture of me wearing a custom made suit. I got about 60 likes, then I posted a picture of me wearing a plane t shirt that said BROOKLYN on it. That got close to 400 likes. Why ? Accessories! I had added a hat, shades, bracelets and a pipe which gave the t-shirt life. It’s all about presentation. When I wear an outfit I want you to remember the clothing and myself.

QSM: You spend a lot of time now mentoring other male models in the industry. Are most receptive to the advice you offer? Eustace: Older guys are very receptive to my advice about fashion. Most older men are hardworking people who just want to look great also when they clean up. They are happy to someone like myself representing them. Men are visual they have to see what you are talking about QSM: Now here is an exclusive for everyone reading this because we have not even announced it. You have recently been named fashion lead for the male division. What are some fresh ideas that people can expect to see added to the magazine for the men? Eustace: Damn! Fashion lead men’s division? You play too much, no seriously? Man I am humble pie, very grateful and appreciative.. What fresh ideas am I going to bring? I like to think of myself as the bridge between the streets and fashion. Whenever there is a casting everyone comes to a room dressed in black. I want to see people for who they are. I want to showcase people who are fashionable that would not be seen and give them a shot to showcase their style of fashion. I am networking with up and coming designers to pay attention to the men of size and showcase their collection. I am in the streets and not behind a desk so I get to see what corporate people don’t. I look forward to the challenges and ideas. You can find on Instagram @collensjr and Facebook Eustace Collens JR. QSM: It is always a pleasure when we get to work with you Eustace and welcome to the team.

MEET RAPHAEL “RALPHY” LOPEZ
My name is Raphael Lopez but I go by Ralphy. I am a 31 year old a licensed Commercial Pilot, a Certified Flight Instructor and I work as an Airport Operations Supervisor at John F. Kennedy International Airport. I’ve been on the control wheel of an airplane since I was 13 years old when I started my flight lessons through my high school program. However, I’ve loved airplanes since I was a young toddler growing up in the Dominican Republic. So you can say, that I was destined to be around airplanes for a career choice. My main career is working as an Airport Operations Supervisor. My duties varies but I mostly supervise security guards around the airport. As a Certified Flight Instructor, my duties is to help students obtain various licenses. These licenses include: Private Pilot, Instrument Rating, Commercial Pilot and Certified Flight Instructor. As an instructor, it is rewarding to see a student of mine start with zero flight hours to flying for an airline. That’s what I love about it. When I teach I am teaching in small propeller airplanes like the Piper Warrior, Piper Arrow or Cessnas. As a commercial pilot, the furthest I’ve personally flown from New York is Florida. The most amazing things about flying to me is the sense of freedom, being able to travel from place to another and being able to see the world below me.

If I was told two years that I would be modeling, I wouldn’t believe it. I started modeling in April 2018 when I did my first runway, District of Curves in Washington, DC. My best friend, Orlando, told me about the show and how they needed more men to model. I was all in. My thought at the time was that it will be fun to do something that I’ve never done before. Fast forward to now 2019, I’ve walked in Full Figured Fashion Week, New York Fashion Week, and National Curves Day and had photoshoots for MVP, SOS Denim and other brands. Who would have thought? A tech geek like myself, who knows nothing else but aviation is starting something new for the fashion industry to see. I am still learning and navigating this industry to find my niche and footing. But what’s most appealing about modeling is that it’s showcasing the Big & Tall man. It’s showing that men of size can be proud of who they are. That a big & tall man can grace the covers of magazines and still be stylish.
MODEL SPOTLIGHT| RAPHAEL “RALPHY” LOPEZ

QSM: Can you tell us how and why you got into the big and tall modeling game? Ralphy: Absolutely! First off, modeling has never been on my radar or something that I thought I could do. About a year ago my best friend, Orlando, told me about the FFF Week audition. The last audition was being held in NYC and he was going to go audition. He wanted me to come with him. The day of the audition, I took a couple pictures from my Facebook and Instagram and printed it out at a local CVS. I walked for Ms. Gwen DeVoe and Ms. Sharon Quinn. About a month later, I walked for District of Curves in DC after my friend Orlando said that they needed more male models. QSM: You also won a calendar contest for the SOS Denim brand. Congratulations! That much be exciting for you. Can you share the details on that with is? Ralphy: Thank you very much! Yes, as part of my win of the calendar contest I am Mr. Handsome 2019. The win includes a feature with Queens Size Magazine, cash prize and being able to walk in the next National Curves Day fashion show. QSM: For someone who just got started you have walked in some major runway shows. Let’s talk about your first time hitting that runway. What was that feeling like for you? Ralphy: When I first walked on that runway, it felt exhilarating. I thought that I would be nervous but I wasn’t. QSM: What are your favorite brands to shop? Places that you know that you are going to find something with no problem. Ralphy: Some of my favorite brands to shop are Target, DXL and Burlington. Every time I go into those stores I have no issue finding clothing in my size. QSM: Give us one thing that you love about this industry and one thing that you don’t. Ralphy: What I love about the industry is the creativity. I love the designs from local designers, the concepts of photo shoots. The one thing that I don’t like and I would like to see more is more events catered to the big and tall man. QSM: Nudity in fashion; what are your thoughts? And would you do a nudity shoot? Ralphy: Hmmmm. I have no issue with nudity in fashion, as long it is done in a creative/artistic way. In this day in age, a lot of people see nudity in the plus size industry as a fetish and that’s something that I don’t agree with. I’m not sure if I would do a shoot nude. It would depend on how the shoot will take place. QSM: Who inspires you in this industry? Someone you know you can go to for info and they won’t steer you wrong or hold back? (yes, you can name more than one) Ralphy: I have a couple people in this industry that inspires me. Dangelo from Designs by D’Angelo is one of my best friends. If I have any questions he’s my go to guy. Kirklan from XLTribe, another best friend of mine, is such an amazing person. If I have a question about lighting or social media he’s definitely the guy that I talk to.
QSM: What word of advice would you offer to anyone who approaches you and want to get into the modeling industry? Ralphy: Just take pictures. Find something fashionable in your closet, find a friend with the latest camera phone, find a dope place to shoot and SHOOT! If you don’t have any type of social media, I recommend getting an Instagram, start posting and use hashtags. Lastly, make sure to follow fashion pages! QSM: Thank you Ralphy. Please let everyone know where they can find you. Ralphy: No Thank you! You can find me on Instagram @ iamrelopez and on facebook: Raphael Lopez. Thank you very much to Ms. Tawana Blassingame and the rest of the Queens Size Magazine team.

Chris is a brawn/plus male model based in Brooklyn, New York. He was born on December 26, 1989 and raised in Queens, New York, to Rene Perez Jr. And Isolina Alballay Perez. He is of Puerto Rican, Haitian, and Chilean descent. He has one older brother (Ruben), one younger sister (Laurin), and an 8-month-old niece (Valeria) whom he adores. He is also engaged to his amazing fiancé Joanne. He recently obtained his Master’s Degree in Higher Education Administration from Baruch College. Chris had no intentions or expectations when venturing into the world of fashion and modeling. He simply wanted to participate in a professional photoshoot so that he would have fresh content to start his instagram account. His friend and colleague Sandy agreed to help him accomplish this. She and Chris met up in late January 2019 and shot fifteen looks in the Dumbo area of Brooklyn, New York. Her support and encouragement are what really inspired Chris to start a modeling page on instagram. In early February 2019, the Curvy Art + Fashion Experience event Chris attended solidified his love for this industry. He was mesmerized by all the love, positivity, and great ensembles put together by the show’s curators and designers. He received so much love and support it was breathtaking. He was even given the opportunity to walk the runway, an impromptu moment, generated by a supportive community during one of the show’s intermissions. It was a fantastic experience filled with great energy and passion from others that made for a memorable night.
Chris hit the ground running in the modeling world. He attended as many castings and photoshoot opportunities as he could. His instagram account (@beardedchrisperez) quickly gained a large following as well. In late February 2019, a gentleman named Ronald Byrd (based in the DMV area) reached out to Chris in hopes of signing him to his modeling agency called Proof. Elated by this offer and after discussing logistics, Chris became the face of Proof X (a plus male division of the Proof modeling agency). Chris is quickly becoming a rising star in the plus fashion world who has modeled for productions such as Fashion Week Brooklyn (2019) and The New Old School Fashion Show (2019). He has a select number of shows coming up in the Fall 2019 season. He is also honored to be on the ballot for the “Emerging Male Model of the Year” category at this year’s Full Figured Industry Awards (November 2, 2019). He hopes to inspire others in the fashion world while simultaneously increasing support and awareness for the body positive movement. He feels that plus-sized individuals are here to say that “we are here to stay. We exist in this realm too. Deal with it.” Chris has openly acknowledged several individuals who have influenced him greatly such as Zach Miko, Ady Del Valle, Jay, Brandon, Joshua, and his entire XXL family. Additionally, he has always exhibited his great appreciation for everyone who has showed him love and support. He only wishes to pay it forward for as long as he can do so. He and his plus-sized colleagues bring a completely different and unique version of what the “general aesthetic” of a fashion model looks like. Chris has aspirations of opening his own modeling agency in the future that is exclusively available to plus/big and tall/brawn/curvy models.

QSM: WOW Chris! Looking at all that you have accomplished, one would never know that you just got started. But let’s rewind the clock for a minute; before all the modeling. Tell me about Chris as a child. Chris: Thank you so much! The grind is real! Chris as a child loved food, wrestling, video games, and playing outside with friends. I used to follow (and annoy) my older brother around as well. My schedule as a kid was pretty standard (go to school, do homework, and relax without a care in the world). I also dealt with a great deal of bullying growing up. I sort of forced myself to become the class clown so I could avoid being made fun of at all costs. QSM: If you could have a conversation with your younger self what would you tell him? Chris: I would tell younger Chris to never be afraid of putting yourself out there. I was extremely afraid of rejection or things not going as I imagined they would. I would simply say “go for it!” I would also do my best to convince my younger self that all the fat jokes and bullying were only temporary. Additionally, those individuals perpetuating these wrongdoings are going through their own issues. That is the reason why they are projecting their negative remarks and/or feelings onto you. Most of them will not be in your life for very long and their insensitive words mean absolutely nothing! QSM: Have you always been a fashionable guy? Chris: Absolutely not! I definitely did not come from a financially wealthy family so it was all about the clearance rack for back to school shopping. As an adult, I LOVE putting together great outfits without breaking the bank (thank you for educating me on this MOM). I use to love wearing sweatpants and T-shirts. I do not even remember wearing jeans in middle school. I would say that I was not too fashionable at all. I kind of just threw on what I had in my drawers and/or closet. Now I am in love with experimenting with different styles, textiles, and looks. I have no fear of wearing anything that my old self may have thought was too weird to throw on. QSM: Have you always been plus? Chris: Yes, I have. From my childhood until now, I have always been overweight by medical standards. I have lost close to sixty pounds since November of 2017 but I still consider myself as plus size. QSM: What magazines were you reading in JHS and did you ever imagine seeing yourself in them? Chris: I use to love Highlights (who did not love to complete the hidden pictures section?). I also used to read Sports Illustrated (or SI) a bunch. I have always been into sports so that was my main interest growing up. I used to read some wrestling magazines here and there, but not too often. I never thought I would ever be in Sports Illustrated or anything linear to that kind of publication. Since SI first created the Body Issue in 2009, I have always wished to be included in something like that.

QSM: Let’s chat about clothing options. Where do you normally shop for your clothing? And what stores can’t you go wrong with when shopping for yourself? Chris: I generally shop online for my clothing. I frequent ASOS, Nike, and Nordstrom Rack a ton when online shopping. In person, I tend to shop at JC Penney, Macy’s, Burlington Coat Factory, and DSW (whenever they have my shoe size). My personal favorites are ASOS and JC Penney. I can always find quality clothing that fit my body frame from those stores. QSM: What would you say are some valuable lessons that you have learned while working as a model so far? Chris: Stay humble! It does not matter if someone is just starting out or has been in the industry for quite some time, I have seen both these types of individuals acting too good for anything or anyone. I have also learned that there will always be people who try to let you know that you do not belong in this industry (whether inadvertently or blatantly). Just stay the course of your path and keep grinding. Additionally, make sure that when people mention your name in any conversation, that they can only say positive things about you. I hope when anyone talks about me that they will say “he is efficient, hardworking, and a pleasure to work with.” I also learned that there are so many individuals who truly support plus size models. I am fortunate to have made several personal and professional connections with people in the realm of fashion.
QSM: In the short time that you’ve been doing this, what changes would you like to see happen in an effort to make the plus size industry better? Chris: It is already sort of happening, but I would love to see more productions that showcase true diversity. I want to see a show that has plus size models, people of color, people with disabilities, people of all ages and walks of life. Fashion has long been this cutthroat industry of exclusivity. I want to bring all the inclusivity that I can possibly bring. Additionally, I would love to see more agency opportunities for the plus size modeling community. QSM: As a big and tall model, what are some things that you would like to see offered to you guys that the ladies seem to get? Chris: Editorial modeling opportunities! I applaud publications such as yours, Obvious Magazine, and the few others who really provide a platform to showcase men who have body types that are similar to my own. QSM: Can you share something about yourself that most people would be shocked to hear? Chris: There are so many! I will give you a few: - I have been singing since I was like three years old and my undergraduate major was Voice-Opera (yes I sang opera). I have performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and Shea Stadium. - I love reality television. I am a fan of Bad Girls Club. - I LOVE to cook WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM| SEPTMEBER 2019 ISSUE

QSM: Let’s talk runway! Tell us about your first time hitting the runway. Chris: It is insane because it seems so long ago but it was only a few months ago. My first runway experience was with Fashion Week Brooklyn (April 2019). I walked for the Beyond XL collection created by Pete Hanley (who is a fantastic designer and an overall great guy). The collection was managed by Catherine Schuller (a household name in Fashion and an amazing individual) and her colleague Sarah (who is such a sweetheart and a fellow plus size model as well). I loved talking and working with each of them. I modeled two pieces for that show. One was a worn looking black leather jacket and the other (my personal favorite) was this brown moose leather trench coat that I believe stole the show. It was such a great experience interacting and being around other individuals who all had different aesthetic looks. I loved this experience and I believe it was a perfect way to start my runway experience. QSM: What are your thoughts on the progress of the plus size industry thus far? Chris: All progress is good progress. That being said, I do feel that in regards to the plus size industry, progress is moving at a snail’s pace. I cannot wait to see when we are finally accepted as a major part of the fashion world as opposed to the anomalies.
FEATURED STORY the time to shoot and chat with us Chris. We wish you much success in your career and in your upcoming nuptials; congrats again on that by the way. Any final thoughts you want to leave us with before you go? (please include your social media info) Chris: Thank you so much! I have nothing but love, support, and appreciation for you and everything you have a hand in. Much love to you, Queen Size Magazine, and the Full Figured Industry Awards. Thank you for allowing me to shed some light on my story. Hopefully it will inspire someone to come into this industry guns blazing like I have. Keep a lookout for me! I have some shows coming up in the fall and I am by no means too good enough to respond to anyone who has a question or comment for me. Shoot me a message and I will get back to you. I wish everyone who is already a part of or looking to get into this industry much success, notoriety, and happiness. Shout outs to my Proof Modeling family! Thank you again for having me. QSM: If you had the opportunity to sit down and pick the brain of one person who would it be? And what would you ask them? Chris: At this point in time, I would say Billy Porter. He is the perfect example of resilience and style. I would just like to ask him: What keeps you moving forward in spite of the naysayers and their negativity? What inspires your impeccable style? What is the toughest loss you have ever endured? What makes you happy? What do you like to do in your down time (assuming you ever get any)? How is it being a part of such a phenomenally groundbreaking show like Pose? QSM: You seem to have a pretty supportive family; how important is that to you? Chris: My family is everything to me. I have always been interested in the arts and my family has never tried to steer me towards practicality. They have always encouraged me to pursue my interests and passions. Seeing my family present at my second show was such a heartwarming feeling. They bring me such joy and peace. QSM: Where do you see yourself in the next three years? Chris: I hope to continue making waves in the fashion world. I would love to be a part of a mainstream ad campaign. I would like to be a part of anything that can give someone the belief that regardless of their aesthetic, they are good enough to be in this industry. I would also like to create a platform where people can showcase their talents and/or appreciation for the arts. I am thinking of putting on a show where we will have live music, a fashion show, and some great food. It will be open to all ages, races, genders, sizes, etc. QSM: I simply adore you and your energy. SIR JOHN X LUMINOUS COSMETICS We all remember how fascinated we were by the movie The Lion King. Celebrity artist Sir John has partnered with Luminous Cosmetic Company and they have developed the Disney limited edition Lion King Makeup Collection and it is highly trending. Sir John known for his iconic work as Beyonce Knowles makeup artist brings the Disney characters to life. Luminess Cosmetics Company was well known for their airbrush foundations, and this is definitely an exciting partnership. The Collection can be found at Ulta Beauty, the collection ranges from $24 to $42 retail price. I would say this is very affordable for a Disney inspired makeup collection. The Collection includes a highlighter palette, eyeshadow palette, a sculpting palette, lip balms and lipsticks. There you have it, be on trend and stop by your local Ulta and swatch a sample today. QSM: Hi Kevin, Please tell us about yourself. Kevin: My name is Kevin Reed and I am a father of two from Queens New York. I am also a full time entrepreneur. QSM: Ooohhhh entrepreneur... Tell me more about that. Kevin: I’ve been in the security business for 20 years and decided to take a chance on myself. So I opened up KFR SECURITY CONSULTANTS 8 YEAR AGO. I provide armed executive protection for celebrity clients and corporate events. At the company, we also teach security and training. QSM: Did you see yourself doing armed security when was younger? If not, what was your dream job? Kevin: No I didn’t see myself doing this kind of work. I used to be supervisor of a group home with adolescent children. But the pay was horrible. My dream job was to be an airline pilot but I wasn’t going to the Air Force. Lol! QSM: I was chatting with one of the other models and asked him the same thing; where do you find your suits and do you think male suits in general are hard to find? Kevin: I get 90% of my suits custom-made. The things that I buy off the rack would be Blazers made by INSEARCH It is extremely hard to find something for big and tall gentleman with style. QSM: In general, where do you find your clothes period? What’s your favorite brand? Kevin: I purchase most of my casual clothes from a store in Jamaica Queens call Sports in effect the brands that I wear are AKOO VDAL JEANS Cult of individual jeans vintage Polo
Mitchell & Ness QSM: From what I understand, you are just starting out in this industry as a model. Where do you see yourself going and what do you hope to achieve? Kevin: Yes I am just starting out in this modeling business. I look forward to many more opportunities. My Ultimate Dream is to be in an AD in someone’s magazine. QSM: Can we one day see you walking on someone’s runway? Or is print work your thing? Kevin: I think I’m more interested in print work right now but I would definitely walk the runway one day. QSM: What are some of the other male models that you follow? Kevin: I am currently following and learning a lot from Eustace Collens @collensjr who I think is the #1 model in NYC. QSM: Where would you like to see the big and tall fashion industry in the next five years? Kevin: That’s a great question. I think that the first major brand that takes a chance on Big & Tall is going to change the industry in the next five years and other brands will follow. We are just beginning to make some noise in this industry QSM: Where can people follow you? Kevin: I can be followed on Instagram @mister_ haberdashery1 Facebook Kevin Reed Email Mrreed1970@yahoo.com

Late one Saturday evening I am screaming, “Sean hurry and get dress we’re going to be late to…!” Immediately my mouth is wide open. Sean comes rolling down to my disbelief he has on a pair of rip, torn jeans with a plain washout faint blue shirt and dusty brown boots in which we are to attend a friend’s engagement. How many women can contest that your man’s fashion never correlates with a proper function or just always wearing the same style in the different ways. The story of my life! Men fashion has grown tremendously over time from their loose cuts pants, to men’s’ accessories, to more colorful flattering outfit. Men’s fashion has gone from being bored to WOW, BAM, OMG type of gestures! When looking for men’s style one has to know what he will look good in and be more receptive of wearing. Men fashion is so easy to obtain when comparing decades ago. I’ve stated a few men’s styles of fashion for all men should have in case of an event to occur or come up so you both or he won’t be caught of guard. A stunning bomber jacket~ Fall is quickly approaching and seeing a man in a bomber jacket or flight jacket is such a signature look for the season. The bomber jacket has come a long way from being plain hunter green to more vibrant colors, designs, and fitted look. The bomber jacket comes in so many styles that it is a great look with simple or distress jeans. The bomber jacket is nice to have to when attending a simple, casual function. A taste of color~ The “today’s men” has lost the stigma of wearing colors. All men should have something of color in their closet. Color is what makes a simple top go from boring to eye staring. Yes, the list of colors is long, but a man should have a color polo top that matches the season. The fall season is a great time to splurge into mustard yellow, mocha brown and pumpkin orange that are warm, but still have a spark of color. Men should never want to gear away from colors, because it is what gives the styles that look and spice to a man’s wear. Photo by Marcelo Chagas from Pexels
A stylish slack~ A man wardrobe should consist of a navy and or black slacks. In some cases may call it trousers. The moment will arise where they are needed and there is no time to get a pair in a timely manner. That pair of slack can come in handy when attending a function of a friend’s house warming, dinner with your wife or girl, and or a simply outing that will require more than jeans. Just note, we were late to our friend’s engagement, but Sean look much cleaner attending the event. Moral of this story make sure you communicate to your significant other whose has no fashion sense and prepare him for the “type” of event!

Vince Georges
a model growing up? What did you want to be in school? Vince: I never even though about being a model because I played football and was always a big kid. I wanted to play football professionally. I got drafted but got hurt in a car accident so that stopped that dream. But I used my college education, started working with kids in the jail systems and been doing and loving it for 35 years. If I can save one kid I did my job!! Not everyone wants to be saved. My youngest sister has been modeling she was since 16. Now she’s a stylist to very high end clients. I always admired her skills on the runway. It’s not a walk, it’s a determined attitude of excellence to strut your stuff. QSM: Oh great so you have some guidance in the family. What I have found recently that while men of size are getting more options in terms of dressing, there is still is a lack of options when you want to dress up in suits. Do you also have that issue and where do you find your options? Vince: At one point I did, but not anymore. Once I found my tailor and found out I can dress like the skinny guys in the magazine I was happy. QSM: Does your tailor make your clothing or do you buy the suits from somewhere and your tailor does the alterations? Vince: My tailor makes the suits and I get my shirts from a designer name Steve Land. Very rarely can I get stuff from certain stores. QSM: Just my point. And that is the issue I have found. So when do we get to see you grace someone’s runway sir? Vince: What I don’t like about some Big & Tall places to shop is their clothes have no swag or grace to it. I’ve done some runway modeling already. I look forward to gracing runways where I can show America that black men of size matter too.
QSM: Vince, tell us a little bit about who you are and what you do for a living. Vince: My Name is Vince Georges. For the last 35 years I have worked for New York Juvenile Justice Department. I have a lovely wife and 3 adult children. I am also a Promoter of Clubs, Parties, Boat Rides, and Major Concert Events. I’m also an armed New York licensed bodyguard that does Executive Protection. I Love fashion which got me into modeling. I have always hated when I walked into a store and they didn’t have anything in my size. So I found me a wonderful tailor and stared getting my suits and clothing custom made. I love the response I got from people. It made me feel good about myself. QSM: Are you New York born and raised? You have such a southern hospitably demeanor to you. Vince: No, I am a born native of the beautiful St. Thomas V.I. I am a proud west Indian. QSM: Ahhhhh that makes sense. Did you ever see yourself as WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|SEPTMEBER 2019 ISSUE
QSM: In terms of male modeling, what are some things that you would like to see offered to you guys that are usually readily available to women? Vince: Well first and foremost I would like to see all plus size models get the same recognition as all other models males and female. QSM: What is your usual everyday style? Vince: My everyday style is casual depending on my whereabouts. QSM: What do you feel like you personally have to offer to the big and tall industry? Vince: I feel I bring a very strong dress code for big guys. Reason stating is when I go out, men and women both ask me do I have a stylist. They ask where I got my outfit from. I get plenty of complements from both sexes. QSM: Where can people follow you Vince? Vince: People can follow me on FB: Vince (TheinfamousBigDaddy) Georges. And on IG and Twitter: @ TheinfamousBigDaddy.

QSM: Tell me about Franklin. Where are you from originally? Franklin: I was born in Georgia while my father was in the Army. I moved to New York when I was three; I lived there until 22 years old. And I lived in New Jersey ever since. QSM: I heard through the grapevine that you are into martial arts. Do tell! Franklin: Yes, I practiced for 37 years. I started boxing early in the boys scouts then went to karate, and then kickboxing. I moved on and then studied Wing Chun. This is a skill that has been passed down; 13th generation of descendants. QSM: WOW! Remind me not to get on your bad side ok! LOL. You also played football and basketball right? Franklin: LOL... My mother was a single parent raising two boys. We moved a couple of times so I started out playing baseball and was good at it; I’m talking little league and all. Then we moved to a block where the kids there didn’t play baseball, they played football. So I had to learn how to play football. Some years later we moved yet again. This time the kids on the block played basketball. The problem is with these kids were they were good. So I had to practice because I had a lot to learn. I went from being picked last to being picked first. When I got to college I ended up playing all three sports. I went to the college of Staten Island and then graduated from Wagner College on Staten Island. My street basketball name was Bernard King because they said I had the same scoring game as him. QSM: A man that knows how to adapt to his environment. I like that. How did you end up working in the NBA and what did you do there? Franklin: Now this is funny. Just like every kid, I wanted to play basketball for the NBA. Growing up in the hood the NBA is all we knew. After working down on Wall Street after college I started my own business; Davis Consultants Inc. While I was working for Chase Bank in the IT department as an IT manager, I used to contact consultant companies to hire IT consultants when we had extra projects. I ended up becoming good friends with a couple of consultant companies and started learning the business and how much money I could make. This lead me to starting my on computer consultant company and I began sending out my own consultants to other companies for projects. The money got so good that I quit and did it full time. One day I received a call from one of my clients. He told me the NBA was looking for some consultants. At the time I didn’t have anyone available so I took on the lead position. The President and CEO love me so much that they offered me a manager’s position and they brought out my contract. I worked there for 28 years until I became a director.

QSM: WOW that is some story. Let’s talk modeling; which is completely different from what you have been doing all of these years. Did you ever see yourself as a male model? Franklin: LOL! Well I have to be honest and say that I get this from my mother. She’s modeled most of her teen years. So as a kid I would see her in fashion shows; I used to mimic her or the guys I would see walk. Because I’m a big guy I’d have to say no I never saw myself as a model but knew I was a bad mother F**** (Laughing). My friend call me SHAFT. You know the saying, “I’m a complicated man but no one understands me but my women”. I’ve been called this since my days of working on Wall Street. In college they called me Ebony for two reasons. I used to always have the newest ebony magazines in my looker, and I used to be a DJ on the radio. I have always had swag and loved clothing; my mother will tell you. When she took us shopping for clothes (I can remember this from as early as about 8 years old) I didn’t want to dress like everyone else so I never really wanted her to buy me clothes. She told me that when I can afford to buy my own clothing that I can wear whatever I wanted to wear. To earn money to do so, I would sell Sunday papers in the projects. She taught me how to make pillowcases to carry the papers, so I would go around the building taking orders and delivering them. Using the money I earned, I would save up enough money to buy my own clothing. QSM: What has your experience been like so far and where do you see yourself in the next five years as a model? Franklin: Wow, that would be a dream... One that I haven’t digested yet. I’m sitting here laughing. I couldn’t even imagine that yet, but it’s something to think about. Listen GOD has been good to me. I worship him like nothing else. It has already been a blessing working with you guys. Eustace is my brother and I will always thank him for this opportunity. I will go where my blessings take me but will always be humble QS: Where can people follow you? Franklin: Instagram: @Platinumteddybear, @ mrdavisproductions. Facebook: Franklin “Shaft” Davis and Mr. Davis Productions, Inc. QSM: Thank you so much for your time and we look forward to working with you again Franklin: Thank you so much I am very very happy I met you guys. I look forward to it

WHY DADS SHOULD GET INVOLVED IN PLAYTIME Experts say that it’s just as important for dads to provide emotional comfort to their kids as moms, and that playing is one of the best ways for dads to serve as role models and strengthen bonds. It all starts with finding the time. “There are so many distractions taking us away from playing with our kids -- from technology to work commitments to household chores,” says Dr. Erik Fisher, psychologist and expert contributor to TheGeniusofPlay.org. “But unstructured play is crucial. No matter what the age, kids learn valuable lessons from this time spent together.” What’s more, studies suggest that playtime with dads may also be beneficial to children’s health. Those families where fathers had increased involvement with childcare -- particularly with such physical tasks as playing with kids, taking them for walks outside, bathing or dressing them -- experienced a decreased likelihood of childhood obesity from age 2 to 4, according to a 2017 study published in the research journal “Obesity.” The good news is that incorporating play into your family schedule does not need to be a daunting task. Check out these fun ideas for dads from The Genius of Play, a national movement providing families with information, inspiration and hands-on ideas to make play an important part of their child’s day. distraction. Practice sitting still, with eyes closed, and focus only on your breathing. Using deep, controlled breaths, try to steer your thoughts away from negative and stress-inducing thoughts. Stretch. While the most health-conscious person may opt for a morning sweat-a-thon, working in some stretches can also be beneficial. When you awake, think about oft-used muscles and extend each one for 15-30 seconds. Activate. Give your brain some fuel in the morning while also doing something nice for your mind. For example, journaling is a gentle way to ease into your morning and get your brain firing. If you can’t think of a topic, simply write down a few affirmations for the day, revisit a pleasant memory from your past or scribble down a goal for the week. Journaling can be an uplifting way to engage the mind and express gratitude for the day ahead.
