Welcome It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Urinetown, performed by our 2nd year Musical Theatre students. The students have worked incredibly hard over the trimester to bring you this beautiful production. In addition to thanking the students for their commitment to the rehearsal process, I would like to thank the many people that have contributed to today’s performance including Penny Farrow, Heidi Loveland, Dan Venz, the Queensland Academy of Excellence in Musical Theatre teaching and admin staff, and the technical crew. This group of students has continued to grow and mature in the creation of this workshop performance, and I am sure that you will enjoy following them through the story of Urinetown. Finally, I would like to thank you for your support, and I very much look forward to seeing you again at our future events. Please enjoy our production of Urinetown.

Professor Paul Sabey Director Queensland Academy of Excellence in Musical Theatre

From the Director For a show about urination this is a sophisticated show. It’s a sharp satire lampooning capitalism, corruption, politics, populism and policy. It parodies some of the biggest Broadway musicals, all the while being transparent about its devices. It’s all quite Brechtian. Yep, Threepenny Opera was also an influence. The more you dig into Urinetown the Musical, the cleverer you realise it is. It is self-aware, unapologetic in its silliness, and deliberately derivative. How many musical parodies can you spot? Working on this show, with this production team, and with these students, has been a joy—you can’t take yourselves too seriously when you spend your days talking about weeing. Like all second-year productions, Urinetown is a workshop production. This means the focus is on process rather than the final product. That is not to say the final product is not important, rather that the process of how to rehearse is paramount at this stage of the students’ learning. The aim in workshop is for students to start making the connection between daily class work and the rehearsal room, and to begin cementing their personal process. We thank the department teachers for all the work that has come before (and during) this period – it’s their day-to-day work the cast is utilising and extending. As always, there are many people I need to thank: Heidi and Dan – I owe you my gratitude for your vision, the care and passion you have given this project, and the support you unwaveringly give me. Elise – your generosity as you shine those voices is boundless. Thanks must go to our administrators Cathy and Dominique, who are always there when you need them. And thanks, of course to the tech team, who come in during the final stages to assist in polishing the product: Izzy, Keith, Andy, Amy, Tobi, Helen, Stu, Erin, Caleb, and Dylan. As always, thank you to Professor Paul Sabey, who is unwavering in his support of his staff and the students. It is his wish for each student to reach their full potential; Urinetown shows us they are all well on their way to this goal. Penny Farrow Director
