Welcome
We are delighted to welcome you here for the performance of WorkingLocalised.
This is our first production in the Cremorne Theatre since QPAC became our home earlier this year. I would like to thank John Kotzas AM, CEO, and his entire team at QPAC for making us all feel extremely welcome.
Based on Studs Terkel’s best-selling book of interviews with American workers, Working paints a vivid portrait of the workers that the world so often takes for granted: the school teacher, the phone operator, the waitress, the millworker, the mason, and the housewife, just to name a few. This version gives the audience the opportunity to hear real stories from the Australian community and for the performers to share these ‘localised’ stories with you.
Working is the second musical theatre production in our 2023 performance season. Further productions for this year include Cry Baby, the Acting and Musical Theatre Showcase and Urinetown, as well as Oresteia and Common Ground from the Bachelor of Acting students.
We have all been thrilled to welcome back Elise Greig to the Queensland Conservatorium to direct this production of Working
The students performing tonight; Elise Greig, the Director; Heidi Loveland, Musical Director; John Clarke, Choreographer, musicians, and all the technical team have worked tirelessly to bring you this wonderful version of Working.
As well as thanking the students, Elise, Heidi, John and the technical team, we would like to thank you for supporting us and very much look forward to welcoming you again to our future performances.
Please enjoy our production of Working - Localised.
Professor Paul Sabey Head of Performing Arts Program Director - Bachelor of Musical TheatreFrom the Director
Everyone does it, whether it’s paid, unpaid, part-time, fulltime, casual, or volunteer. Work is a part of life. It’s everywhere we look, but how often do we take the time to celebrate those who work and the work they do?
The original production of Working was based on the 1974 Studs Terkel book of interviews, Working: People Talk About What They Do All Day and How They Feel About What They Do. In 1977 these interviews were used as the stimulus for Working, a musical with book by Stephen Schwartz and Nina Faso, music by Schwartz, Craig Carnelia, Micki Grant, Mary Rogers, and James Taylor and Susan Birkenhead. Working has since been updated and ‘localised’ and that’s what we’re sharing with you in this production. A localised version of Working that incorporates voices from our community. Over the summer break, the students interviewed friends, family, and strangers about the work they do. These interviews have since been woven into the fabric of the text, reminding us that behind every job there is a person with a story to tell. In our production, the interviews are supported by images and footage of the people we interviewed.
When Professor Paul Sabey approached me to adapt and direct Working, I was thrilled by the opportunity to explore this excellent piece. I am very grateful to Paul for trusting me to localise and contemporise this insightful and important work of music theatre. Embracing the challenge of adapting the work to suit an ensemble of 23 emerging performers has been a creative joy. Throughout the process we’ve laughed, cried, celebrated, and rejoiced because when you ask someone what they do for work, you learn so much more about them than just their job title. We can’t thank our intrepid interviewees enough. To each and every person who agreed to tell us their story – you’re a champion. Your contribution has been invaluable.
I have adored working with this terrific cohort and I couldn’t be prouder of them for their openness, commitment, and willingness to explore. As they take to the stage at their new home, I’ve reflected more than once that I performed at the opening of QPAC more than 38 years ago. My desire to pursue a career in the arts was consolidated right then and there. It feels like a full circle moment to find myself directing a company of young artists as they prepare to launch their own careers in this very building.
I’d like to thank Professor Paul Sabey for his exemplary leadership and support, and the fabulous Heidi Loveland for her splendid musical ability, John Clarke for his fancy footwork and Amy and her team, including Keith Clark, Steve Thornely and Lachlan Paterson, for realising the technical aspects of the production. Thanks also to our excellent band, and of course, where would any of us be
without Domi and Cathy in admin. When a new piece of work is being created, that photocopier works overtime, and so do they.
And finally, to you, our audience - you are indispensable to our creative process. We can’t thank you enough for joining us and if you were one of the people who shared their story… we hope you like what we’ve done with it.
