Nelson Ford Reverse Beard Off Outdoor SkatePark Fundraiser Shave Off Thursday, August 25 SpiritBar Doors 8 p.m. Event 9 p.m. sharp

After over nine years, Nelson is finally getting an outdoor skatepark, but with at least $400,000 dollars needed, it does seem as though the hard work is just getting started. The Nelson Ford Reverse Beard Off might end up being just the drop in the bucket of what’s needed. The fur is ready to fly all in the name of the cause so these kids can finally have a place to call their own. The Beard Off is a rather simple idea. Eight guys have committed to growing beards throughout the summer (although councilor Robin Cherbo has had his beard for over 30 years) and will be shaving them off at SpiritBar on Thursday, August 25. The “why” is pretty simple; nobody we talked to has ever heard of anything like this being done and if you want to raise funds these days you have to be creative.

Miscellaneous observations, recommendations, issues and what-have- yous worth considering or not this week in Nelson.

Theatre isn’t reopening any time soon. However Nelson does have a new movie mini-theatre worth checking out. Reo’s has opened a 12-seat mini theatre in its renovated upstairs. Talk about ‘sit back and enjoy the show’ - comfortable theatre seating for up to 12 people, surround sound and a 50” screen (why do we still talk big in inches?). The mini-theatre is available to book for whatever event you have in mind – movie clubs, birthday parties, games nights. Pass the popcorn! Contact Reo’s Video on Front Street for rental details. Unimpressed Just

in case you didn’t realize it, that music blasting out of every square inch of your vehicle doesn’t impress the girls (or anyone else for

that matter). If you’re wanting to attract attention, you’re succeeding, but did you really want everyone to notice you for being a self-absorbed jerk (not to mention your taste for bad music)? Yum: Fabulous food to check out in Nelson and area. CAKE!!! Did

someone say cake? Welcome to Nelson’s newest bakeshop. Lucky Cupcakes just opened in the 500 block of Baker Street. If you’ve been to the markets you’ll know it was high time the sell-out cupcake queen set up permanent shop. You won’t be disappointed she did. Cupcakes have gained huge followings in recent years – there’s even a reality TV shows about a cupcake shop. No need for TV, Nelson’s now got its own cupcake hook up. August 29 - September 5 Nelson

Featuring a series of events for the whole family this year’s pride week promises to be fun for all stripes. After fifteen years we’ve finally gotten past that awkward stage and this year we’re coming out bigger and better than ever. We’ve heightened the atmosphere of awareness and acceptance of the diversity within our community and the integral part we play in the culture of the Kootenays. NEW this year will be our first ever Family Day. For the kids: balloon popping fun, magician, face painters, potato sack races, three legged costume racing and more! Lots of free prizes and stuff! For everyone: live music, and entertainment. Vendors, food, crafts and mer-

chandise by The Cottonwood Farmer’s Market (West Kootenay Eco Society). 3-6 p.m. Saturday, September 3. This event is absolutely free and guaranteed to be a fun afternoon. Baker Street will once again be festooned in rainbow flags as the street merchants compete vigorously to win the best dressed window award. Little Sisters, the legendary Davie Street book store will be sending a whole contingent out from the coast. They will have a table at Family and at the Rally. For more information visit:

Retallack - the world acclaimed backcountry catskiing destination, and Riley McIntosh have teamed up to offer a unique backcountry mountain biking experience. You’ll be able to access descents of up to 5,000 vertical feet via a combination of off-road vehicles and helicopters. Luxury food and accommodations will be provided at Retallack’s 11,000 square foot lodge - located in the heart of the Selkirk Mountains. “I can’t wait to share the flowing trails, with nothing but miles of winding single-track separating them from a fully stocked bar, gourmet dinner, hot tub, sauna and massage waiting at the bottom – all for a package value that is comparable to what you’d spend on a typical bike park trip,” McIntosh said, who has been at the forefront of backcountry mountain biking for more than a decade. In that time, his talent for building mountain biking trails has earned him a level of respect from his fellow trail builders and freeriders that is second to none. He is the previous founder of Rilor Wilderness that specialized in backcountry mountain biking tours. He has architected numerous legendary intermediate and advanced trails, including Powerslave (recently featured in the movie “Life Cycles”), and has helped to build many others throughout the Kootenay region in British Columbia. Retallack general manager, Phil Pinfold, said that the company’s first priority is to build on Retallack’s reputation for outstanding terrain by providing exceptional service to both new and existing customers. Packages and trails will be geared towards both intermediate and advanced riders.

Retallack director, Kevin Arcuri, said that its owners and management team were thrilled to be pioneers in the guided backcountry mountain biking industry and that its summer mountain biking operations would mirror the professionalism and safety standards of its winter backcountry ~Freeskier Magazine catskiing operations. “We are dedicated to providing the highest quality backcountry experience to our customers. Retallack is 100% owned by expert skiers, snowboarders and mountain bikers – including legendary freeskiers Seth Morrison and Tanner Hall. All of our decisions are thus made by riders, for riders,” he said. Retallack is the first cat or heli-skiing operation to be awarded four green keys from the Hotel Association of Canada’s Green Key Eco-Rating program, meaning that it has been judged as showing “national industry leadership and commitment to protecting the environment through wide-ranging policies and practices.” Retallack was recently ranked as “The best cat or heli-skiing operation in the world” by Freeskier Magazine in both industry and reader polls. Racing For

7 Days

Fernie to Canmore A local cross country/ marathon bike racer by the name of Travis Hauck just returned from a seven day race called the Trans Rockies. The Trans Rockies starts in Fernie, BC and ends in Canmore, AB. This race draws competitors from all over the world and since this was the 10th year anniversary, it was quite special. In this race you have to team up with a partner and ride together. After riding over 400 km, spending 23 hours spread out over the seven days, Travis and his partner Brian Cooke (from Canmore, AB) finished in third place in the men’s open category. Travis

would like to thank the Nelson District Credit Union and Gerick Cycle for helping him out with race fees and bike parts. Once again I would like to remind everyone about the upcoming Fat Tire Festival. The event will be held August 26-28th with lots of activities and tons of prizes. The organizers hope to attract all ages and all skill levels of cyclists out for the bicycle celebration. Pre-register for the events at Gerick’s or Sacred Ride. Thanks for reading, ~Anonymous Cyclist.

A Wacky World...

“Hello 911,

TOTAL NETWORK CARE PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE ON DEMAND AND EMERGENCY IT SERVICES TRAINING INDEPENDENT ADVICE AND CONSULTATION

Yes, they’re asking me to do housework” A boy of 11 called a German police emergency line to complain of “forced labour” after his mother told him to help clean the home. Police say the boy spoke to an officer complaining “I have to work all day long. I haven’t any free time.” His mother told the officer the boy had kept threatening to call them, having repeatedly complained of having to do housework during the school holidays. A transcript of the conversation, printed in local newspapers, revealed the officer asking

the boy to describe the kind of “forced labour” he was doing. The boy replied that he had to clean the home and terrace, it said. Asked if he knew what forced labour was, the boy said he did, and the police officer asked to speak to his mother, who at that stage was standing next to him. She explained he had called after being asked to pick up paper from the floor, adding: “He plays all day long and when told to tidy up what he’s done, he calls it forced labour.” ~www.bbc.co.uk

Distracted Police spotted David Secker, 34, holding one handset to his right ear as he appeared to use a second telephone in his left hand to send a text message while driving in Blofield in Norfolk, east England. An officer said that once he had stopped the jobless driver, he was kept waiting while the suspect finished his conversation before he would talk to the police patrol, The (London) Times reported. Secker denied that he had been steering his car with his knees, causing it to swerve across the road. At an earlier hearing, Secker, was found guilty of using a

mobile while driving, having no insurance and not being in a position to have proper control of his vehicle. He received eight penalty points for driving without insurance, three points for not being in proper control and a further three points for mobile phone use. In addition to a year’s ban, he was fined £150 ($245). Road safety groups were furious at the sentence. “Yet another example of someone who has repeatedly committed offences that pose a significant threat to human life being let off with a slap on the wrist.” ~www.news.com
