Dylan Humphreys Like an animal collecting trinkets of nature in a feeble attempt to retrieve solace from the realities of the day, I sit in a culture littered by imagery in the form of persuasive advertising and generally un-satiating public bric-a-brac. All I have to play with are relics, fragments of the past. Confronting the days ahead in turn also demands burrowing into the past. Fleeting the present, I am intoxicated by invasive media and stimulation, constantly evading the gruesome subject of our culture. Some call it attention deficit disorder, but I often like to think that some of my heroes would have been the same way. I’m sure if back in the day, Crumb, Kirby and Steadman all had Internet, they’d be crazier than giraffes drinking absinthe on their day off. I find comfort in the works of those individuals who expressed their present experience and or discomfort through now preciously archived media, and I know that for many of these people life was much harder to maintain the scrimmage. It is the least I can do.

In And Around Here... Thank Dog it’s
Friday
Miscellaneous observations, recommendations, issues and what-have- yous worth considering or not this week in Nelson.
Life’s a Beach ... Finally lake levels have dropped and the beaches along the north shore are back! 2 Mile, 4 Mile, 6 Mile – they’re all where we left them. Well, let me rephrase that, they are there but not fully themselves. 6 Mile spit is about halfway out of the water – enough warm sand for people to lie on but not much more (as of August long weekend). With the level still high, the bottom drops off sharply, leaving little shallow water for young children to play – keep them near you in the water. The floating dock is gone – such as it was. By the end of last summer it was half sunk with most of its boards missing and the remainder covered in bird poop. Still, it was a familiar marker - now if you’re going to challenge someone, you’ve got quite a distance to cover. Water’s darn cold. Make a run for it. I saw you: Actually, I didn’t see you, but my daughter did. You were in the new John Ward coffee shop, all chatty and casual – didn’t want to draw attention
to yourself as you emptied the cream urn into a container you had with you in your pack for that purpose. You’ve done this before, haven’t you? Probably at all the coffee shops in town. half and half cream is 97 cents at Extra Foods. No kidding. Baristas beware: if you thought you had just filled the cream container, you did. A young woman with an extreme cream craving (and no manners – leaves none for your other patrons) is either stocking her fridge or has a very fat cat somewhere. Yum: Fabulous food to check out in Nelson and area. Forgive me if I’ve mentioned this one before, and I know I’m going to misspell it – that’s two things to forgive me for, but believe me, you won’t need to forgive me when you have a Bacio Nero (pronounced like ‘macho) dessert at the Hume Hotel. It’s this chocolate-coated mocha ice cream bomb thing with Kahlua inside. Hot night/cool treat. However you spell it, they’ll know what you’re asking for. ~Paula Hudson-Lunn

A 12 Year Olds African
This week Julie’s mom Silvia checks in with Quick Shot on her and her daughter’s adventure to Africa.
We arrived in Cape Town over a week ago. It is winter here and the homebase in the suburb that we share with 30 other volunteers without central heating - I promptly got the flu and Julie went to the first day of placement by herself - she is a very courageous gal! We are driven by CCS van to Khayelitsha, a township of about 1 million black people, mostly living in shacks without bathrooms, running water or heat, approximately 30 minutes east from our homebase.

In South Africa there are 11 official languages, but English is the language of business, commerce and tourism and thus affords the greatest opportunity. Julie is the youngest volunteer they’ve ever had and she’s doing really well, not only in her volunteer work but also mixing with the group and participating in most activities such as HIV/Aids discussion, ixiXosha and Afrikaans language instruction and short excursions around town. Security is an issue much stressed here. Our homebase is electric fenced and security patrolled 24/7. We’re driven everywhere and not allowed to
take public transportation. Curfew is before sunset and we are not to go out in groups less than four during daylight. Each one of us was outfitted with a cellphone with pre-programed numbers for emergencies and also includes approved taxi companies. The children in Kayelitsha mostly speak ixiXosha, the wonderful, rhythmic and measured language of Nelson Mandela which includes three different clicking sounds as part of the alphabet. We are learning some of the language here at the homebase and it is very helpful, though very different from any other language I am familiar with. I’ll tell you more about our work with the children another time, but it is very fun to be with them! They are bright, smart, quick on the pick-up children with multiple challenges. All orphaned and many HIV infected, some with learning disabilities, few with physical handicaps. They are eager to learn, ready to smile at any time and always willing to go along with what we suggest. It is a joy to be with them. Wish you could be here to see it all too! ~Silvia Schoch

Bringing his Australian-flavou red tribal stomp for a post-festival shakedown, Ganga Giri once again returns to SpiritBar. An amazing artist with the didgeradoo, Ganga uses this ancient and primal instrument as a springboard into modern sonic times. Combining this traditional instrument with dancehall, reggae, rock, and electronic music, he has created something truly his own. No stranger to the Kootenays, he has played Shambhala many times to great acclaim, always turning the crowd into a sweaty writhing mass! His latest album Good Voodoo has tightened up his sound, with a much stronger vocal presence, as well as solidified his band; on dancehall vocals, french Guyana native Jornick Joe Lick, Dan Pearson on electronic kit, Yeshe Reiners on percussion, and indigenous tribal dancer Gumaroy. Joining him is longtime friend, and Kootenay local, Adham Shaikh for a night full of deep, earth-shaking grooves!

A former refugee from Rwanda, The Mighty Popo brings the music and celebration of his culture to stages across the world, from his new home in Canada. Sharing a Juno in 2004 as part of the African Guitar Summit (with Alpha Yaya Diallo and Madagascar Slim), Popo has received many accolades, including a segment in Bob Geldof’s Live 8 DVD. While his background and musical roots are African, a lifetime exposed to different genres has given him a unique musical expression. Tradition African rhythms and melodies are melded with rock n’ roll, blues, jazz, reggae and folk. His seventh and latest album however, Gakondo, is a return to his traditional African heritage - Popo spent months researching and learning the origins of his musical forefathers and their instruments. Lithuanian Mayor Acts on
A Wacky World... Pot For Votes
A medical marijuana shop’s offer of free pot in exchange for registering to vote appears to have gone up in smoke. Your Healthy Choice Clinic of Lansing, Michigan had been offering a half gram on its website ahead of a vote for city council seats and after the council approved capping the number of medical marijuana dispensaries within city limits and setting a $1,000 application fee. Clinic owner Shekina Pena earlier said she wasn’t trying to buy votes. ~www.msnbc.com
Kitten looks like Chaplin , or Hitler An animal shelter in England has been inundated with phone calls from cat-
lovers interested in adopting a kitten that many claim resembles Adolf Hitler and Charlie Chaplin. According to the Wood Green shelter, the six-week-old kitten, who sports a tiny patch of black hair around her nose like a moustache, has garnered the nicknames “Kitler” & “Charlie Cat-lin” since arriving at the shelter on July 22. Six-week-old Luminous, “as she prefers to be known,” according to shelter staff, “loves nothing more than getting up to mischief like any other kitten and is completely oblivious of her new found fame.” The cat will be available for adoption soon, they say. But Luminous is just one cat of many who’s been compared to the infamous German dictator. In fact, it’s become something of a web phenomenon, with sites such as CatsthatlooklikeHitler.com ~edmontonsun.com
Bad Parking
The mayor of the Lithuanian capital Vilnius has taken his frustration over motorists parking in bicycle lanes into his own hands – by driving an armoured personnel carrier over a Mercedes. Residents are reportedly tired of luxury car owners parking with impunity and have requested the local council do something about it. In a publicity stunt to reassure the public that the city authorities is addressing the issue, Arturas Zuokas jumped in an army troop carrier and drove over an old Mercedes-Benz S-Class that had been parked in a bicycle lane. “I wanted to send a message,” Mr Zuokas told the media. “I want to point out that if you have a car and more money it doesn’t mean that you can park it everywhere. Recently there’s been an increase in this type of parking violations, and it shows a lack of respect for others”. ~www.irishtimes.com
