“I hooked a salmon on the Bandon at Cork, but I’d been fishing for trout and had on the lightest tackle imaginable. Three flies on the thinnest gut. As soon as the salmon took me I knew I was in trouble but, after his first rush, I thought I had a chance. He shook his head, made a second run and leaped clear of the water. Ten pounds I thought. The fight continued. I saw his silver flank in mid-stream. He was tiring, but then, unbelievably, I saw the ghostly shadow of another salmon just behind the hooked fish. Almost at once I realised what was about to happen – and happen it did. The second fish took one of my other flies and set off in the opposite direction to the first fish. Miraculously, for a few seconds I was aware of both fish still on the line, then, inevitably, they were gone. No one I spoke to in the long years after that incident could ever recall a similar occurrence.”

Angling Disasters

Great

Angling Disasters Great Angling Disasters is a wonderful collection of fishy tales from the past two hundred years that will have the reader caught hook, line and sinker. Stories of record breakers that got away, to boats that sank, rods that broke and pike and salmon that ran amok. It is the ultimate chronicle of those less than triumphant days on the riverbank.
