FALCONRY

James McKay is a zoologist with a keen professional interest in raptors (birds of prey and owls). Having been given his first hawk – a Eurasian kestrel – as a reward for passing his 11 Plus examination, James has since gained extensive practical experience of many aspects of falconry. He has trained and flown many species of hawk, falcon, buzzard and owl. James is director of the UK’s prestigious National Falconry School, where over fifty raptors are maintained, bred and trained. The School gives displays of falconry throughout the UK and Europe, and runs a wide range of raptor related courses. It is an approved training centre for the UK’s Lantra Awards in falconry, and James is both an assessor and an external verifier for Lantra.

PRACTICAL

FALCONRY Falconry, the art of using trained birds of prey, such as hawks, eagles and falcons, is an ancient practice dating back almost two thousand years. In this book, the author pays tribute to that long history, but brings the sport of falconry up to date with the latest equipment and practices. Using his long and extensive experience, spanning over forty years, James McKay looks at the history of the sport of falconry, the birds used in the twenty-first century, and the latest equipment available. He gives practical tips on how best to train the birds and use the equipment, as well as how to achieve success when flying the birds in the field. The book covers all aspects of modern falconry from selection of birds, to their general day-to-day husbandry. Equipment, housing, training, the use of ferrets and dogs to enhance a day’s sport, first aid and veterinary treatment of hawks are all covered. A section on captive breeding helps point the modern falconer in the direction of establishing self-sustaining captive populations of birds of prey, both for the sport of falconry and for conservation of these magnificent birds. Suitable for beginners and experienced falconers, Practical Falconry presents a very straightforward, modern approach to the ancient and noble art of falconry.
