What’s a Chap To Do? SHOOTING
Anguished Letters to the Shooting Gazette Wise Words from Uncle Giles Giles Catchpole
A
n entertaining and instructive collection of letters observing the eccentricities, etiquette and issues of the shooting sportsman and woman from Shooting Gazette magazine's columnist, ‘Uncle Giles’. There are many excellent books to advise the novice shooter on proper gun handling, safety and accuracy. However, no manual can hope to address every problem that might arise in the shooting field or, indeed, beyond it. Being British, there are many such issues which we would never dream of mentioning, let alone actually discussing. A pursed lip or a raised eyebrow may be as far as many chaps are prepared to go in addressing some of these important matters. But these gestures are open to misinterpretation and misunderstanding, with possibly disastrous consequences. A few words of advice, a reassuring hand on the shoulder that just puts a chap’s mind at rest and sets him comfortably back on the straight and narrow are whatʼs needed. ‘Uncle Giles’ is just the chap and his wise words have been clarifying these matters for readers of the Shooting Gazette for a number of years. A selection of these concerns – and resolutions – are now shared with a wider public.

T
he Labrador Theory grew out of Cheever Hardwick’s long-held theory that the human male (Labradoribus Verticalus) and the much-beloved Labrador (Labradoribus Horizontalibus) are similar in all but upholstery and vocabulary. He believes that if this can be recognised, understood and well-managed by the opposite gender, an enormous amount of unpleasantness, outrageous legal fees and divorce settlements can easily be avoided. Full of perceptive, trenchant and witty observations of the distinct similarities between man and dog, this book hilariously defines that very special relationship to perfection and it will bring a broad smile to many faces.
C
heever Hardwick, born in New York City, graduated from Washington and Lee University, Virginia, with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Journalism and later received a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Colorado Law School. He spent a great deal of his teenage years travelling in Europe and his working life almost entirely in South America and Mexico. Now retired, he spends his time between Wiltshire and the Algarve, usually surrounded by various dogs, cats, sheep, chickens and, even sometimes, pigs.
Key Features • A truly hilarious book likening men in their middle years to well-fed Labradors • Will appeal to both male and female as a tongue-in-cheek look at modern-day relationships • Full of entertaining snippets on how the male psyche works • A superb gift for anyone with a sense of humour • Beautifully illustrated throughout with cartoons by Alasdair Hilleary, author of the bestselling Loon (978-1-85310-598-2) 5

T
fascinating book on the life of Brian Mitchell and his philosophy towards gamekeeping and countryside management – his once controversial views on pheasant rearing and cover crops are now accepted worldwide. The book covers his early working life on the Sherborne Estate through to Miltons where Brian saw the potential of the shoot to produce the now renowned Exmoor high bird. It discusses the challenges he faced at Castle Hill and the development of the shoot over 25 years. Mishaps and successes are chronicled and each chapter is littered with anecdotes – many of them humorous – and laced with the names of characters from the world of shooting.
his BASC Handbook is an addition to the BASC Handbook series, particularly aimed at the new entrant and novice shooter, covering a brief background history of sporting shooting, the law appertaining to the possession of firearms including storage and security, matching the correct weapon to the sport, and the mechanics of different types of sporting firearms. For the more experienced, it provides a valuable guide to the care and maintenance of both sporting shotguns and rifles – routine cleaning, stripping a firearm and checking for wear/ faults, as well as how to carry out simple repairs and alterations such as stock/rust removal and spot blueing.

A
fascinating and comprehensive book on the history of gamekeeping from the inception of the profession in the late seventeenth century to the present day. Covering all aspects of the history of gamekeeping it not only contains a large selection of historic illustrations, depicting the gamekeeper’s work, but also draws on oral and written testimonies from gamekeepers collected by the author.
avid S D Jones has been an archivist and historian for the National Gamekeepers’ Organisation for over a decade and has written extensively on the subject of gamekeeping over the past thirty years, contributing numerous articles to all of the major British sporting titles. In addition, he owns the Gamekeeping Photographic Archive. He is the author of the widely acclaimed Sporting Estates of the Outer Hebrides – Past and Present and Sporting Lodges – Sanctuaries, Havens and Retreats (978-1-84689-168-7) with J C Jeremy Hobson.
It provides a unique insight into gamekeeping and has been written in order to provide an accurate record of gamekeeping in times past, something often neglected by other authors who have painted a much rosier picture of the gamekeeper’s life in bygone days, rather than a truthful one based on hard facts.
Key Features • A fascinating and comprehensive book on the history of gamekeeping • Aimed at gamekeepers, sportsmen, shooters and anyone with an interest in country life or countryside history • Invaluable work of reference for the gamekeeper, the history student, the social historian, and those interested in life on the country estate • Includes snippets from tape recordings of the gamekeepers’ community, contemporary newspaper clippings and extracts from historic documents • Beautifully illustrated throughout with previously unpublished photographs 7

Becoming an English Country Squire GENERAL
D’Arcy Henry
D
’Arcy Henry has written this light and amusing but heartfelt memoir about how he came to acquire and then manage one of the few essentially original, historic English country estates remaining in private hands – and lived to tell the tale. His lifestyle is idyllic, but the author is not a materialist and in some ways the book is a gentle semi-morality tale. The subject and treatment appealed to Annie Tempest, who chose to put her famous Tottering-by-Gently stamp on it, by producing the jacket design and illustrating the text. It will not only appeal to Downton viewers – and these include American travellers and Anglophiles – but also Country Life readers and those who love Annie Tempest’s characters and humour.

The Lucky Marketeer
BIOGRAPHY
Amelia Opie
Golden Days of the Drinks Trade Tim Ambler
The Quaker Celebrity Ann Farrant A comprehensive and award winning biography of Amelia Opie, poet and novelist (1769 - 1853) – the first since 1937. Her long and interesting life deserves to be retold, with the inclusion of hitherto unpublished material from archive and private sources. Flirtatious and lively, she moved easily in literary and artistic circles, had many high society friends and was greatly influenced by, and involved with, the Gurneys of Earlham – whose good works included the prison reforms of Elizabeth Fry (nee Gurney) and the anti-slavery campaign of Thomas Fowell Buxton. Under the influence of Joseph Gurney, incomprehensible to her admirers, she became a Quaker at the age of 55.
A fast moving and often hilarious record of Tim Amblerʼs life from his early years at prep school through to his joining International Distillers and Vintners, academia and retirement. What singles out this book is that, although vastly amusing and irreverent, it covers serious ground. He masterminded the famous Smirnoff advertising campaign as well as the launches of Baileys, Malibu, Piat dʼOr and a host of other brands. His international experience, his enthusiasm for marketing and his teachings at the London Business School have enlightened students and company boardrooms as well as government. ‘Britainʼs Greatest Marketeerʼ – attributed to the author at his retirement by Marketing Magazine.

DEER Gift Choice Deer: Artists’ Impressions
Foreword by HRH The Prince of Wales Introduction by Graham Downing Ashley Boon, Ben Hoskyns, Ian MacGillivray, Rodger McPhail, Martin Ridley, Jonathan Sainsbury, Keith Sykes and Owen Williams
‘... many of the pictures draw their inspiration from the red deer of the Scottish highlands. They are truly spectacular, reflecting the misty loch, the cloud swirling in an autumn corrie, the charcoal grey and white of the snowbound mountains or the brilliant, intense blue of the winter sky contrasting with the whiskeycoloured grass of the hill.’ British Deer Society
‘Following on from previous Artists’ Impressions of grouse and woodcock this magnificent volume brings together the work of eight of our foremost wildlife artists. There are stunning images in contrasting styles of painting, pencil drawing and scraper board, while the accompanying words give a fascinating insight into the world of the artist and the deer... every one of the scores of images is like a fresh discovery.’ BASC Shooting and Conservation

GENERAL INTEREST Farm Fatale
Recommended
Paul Heiney
In the early 1990s Paul Heiney set aside his broadcasting career and swapped it for a life on the land. He shunned modern intensive methods and reverted to a system of farming that his great grandparents would have known – ploughing, sowing, reaping and mowing with carthorses rather than tractors. This book, with a great deal of humour, paints an unforgettable portrait of a man in determined pursuit of a dream. 198 x 129 mm, 208 pages, black & white illustrations casebound, 978-1-900318-44-0, EP

rthur Kottas was accepted as an Eléve (trainee) in the Spanish Riding School of Vienna in 1960; he rose rapidly under the tutelage of Colonel Alois Podhajsky to become the youngest ever First Chief Rider in the history of the School. He became an Assistant Rider in 1964, a Rider in 1969, Chief Rider in 1981 and in 1983, Riding Master. From 1995 until retiring from the School in 2002 he was First Chief Rider. Kottas is a rider and trainer of the highest international repute and has successfully trained many horses and riders up to Olympic standard. His previous Quiller title was Kottas on Dressage (978-1-905693-05-4).
ressage Solutions offers advice on the correct way to introduce work on the gaits, exercises and movements, together with in-depth analysis of common problems and ways to correct them. The author makes the point that many errors are rooted in faulty posture or aiding on the rider’s part. Constant emphasis is placed on the need to be mindful of the horse’s mental and physical ability to cope with what is being asked of him. Dressage Solutions takes the reader through many stages of training, from ensuring that the basic gaits are correct, introducing the lateral exercises, developing the canter, reinback, piaffe and passage, to a final chapter that explains some of the long-established movements of the High School. This is a journey that will provide much food for thought, and a great deal of invaluable advice, for all riders who have progress and their horse’s well-being at heart.
