In 2010, we introduced Sparrow, our dainty organic linen yarn. The flax fiber used in Sparrow is grown in Bel-
gium, home to the finest linen in the world, and it’s spun in Italy. A few years later, we introduced Kestrel, spun from the same fiber, but a very different yarn from Sparrow. It’s spun as a knitted tube and one of the pleasures of Kestrel is that it knits up on a larger needle, anywhere from size US 8 to 10½, depending on the effect you’re after. In this collection, Melissa LaBarre uses the yarn in her relaxed cardigan Jessamin, with spacious openwork borders and center front bands worked in garter stitch. These simple stitches take on an interesting character when knitted in a ribbon-like yarn, as you can see in the photo opposite. In Adelaide (page 6), Cecily Glowik MacDonald worked a classic, top-down raglan pullover to which she added a bold diamond-lace panel front and center. In a finer yarn, this lovely sweater would have a very different feel, more delicate and romantic. (I’d love to see it in Sparrow.) Here, in Kestrel, the piece is fresh and modern. Bristol Ivy’s Bridie (page 14), takes advantage of Kestrel’s propensity to drape. For her generous cocoon shrug, she knitted repeating purl-texture motifs that stand out on the stockinette stitch background. Finally, Tamsin (page 18), designed by Dawn Catanzaro, couldn’t be simpler or more wearable. Her swingy tank in reverse stockinette stitch is a perfect match for a drapey yarn whose flat structure makes the most basic of stitches a matter of interest.
