From seed to sprout to stalk to flower to harvest, that’s how flax grows. At some point long, long ago, our ancestors discovered that they could strip away the coarse outer layers of the plant’s stem and manipulate the long bast fibers therein, massaging and spinning them into thread. We’re so glad they did. We love linen, its lustrous, smooth sheen, its sturdy hand that drapes gracefully and softens over time and washing into a fabric as supple, soft, and comfortable as worn-in cotton flannel pj’s. We especially love Sparrow, our fine linen yarn, spun in Italy from linen grown organically in Belgium. The projects in this year’s Sans collection, easily knitted on slightly larger needles, are designed to show just how lovely this simple, beautiful fiber can be. And as much as we love Sparrow in color (and we do, we do), we can’t help but but admire it just as it comes from the plant. How naturally it pairs with the basic elements of summer: sun, sand, wind, and water.

Scarborough Shrug Pam Allen

I like shrugs and think of them as accessories than sweaters. They’re adorning rather than practical. And they’re so simple to make. Their simple rectangular shape makes them the perfect foil for a stitch pattern you might otherwise not use; in this case, a pretty, light and airy, somewhat spidery stitch that looks a little like crochet. Finished measurements 27¼ (29¾, 31, 33½, 34¾, 37¼, 38½, 41)" [69 (75.5, 79, 85, 88, 93.5, 98, 104) cm] armhole to armhole, 22 (22, 22, 24, 24, 24, 26, 26)" [56 (56, 56, 61, 61, 61, 61, 66) cm] from back neck to hem Shown in 27¼" [69 cm] with a 34" [86.5 cm] bust Yarn Sparrow by Quince & Co (100% organic linen; 170yd [155m]/50g) • 4 (4, 4, 5, 5, 5, 6, 6) skeins Sans 200 Needles • One 24"circular (circ) in size US 3 [3.5 mm] • One 24" circular (circ) in size US 6 [3.75 mm] • Two double-pointed needles (dpns) in size US 3 [3.5 mm] Or size to obtain gauge Notions • Tapestry needle Gauge 19 sts and 25 rows = 4" [10 cm] in shell pattern, after blocking.

Highmoor Bag Pam Allen

One can never have enough garter stitch. Or enough Sparrow. This take-it-anywhere bag is worked with 3 strands held together for umpf and durability. Line if, if you like, and add a pocket on the outside for easy access to your phone or lip balm. Finished measurements 14" [35.5 cm] high and 14" [35.5 cm] wide, 2" [5 cm] deep and 30½" [77.5 cm] shoulder strap Yarn Sparrow by Quince & Co (100% organic linen; 170yd [155m]/50g) • 9 skeins Sans 200 Needles • Two 24" circular needles (circ) in size US 6 [4mm] • One pair in size US 6 [4mm] (optional) • One straight needle in size US 6 [4mm] for 3-needle bind off Or size to obtain gauge Notions • Removable stitch marker (m) • Stitch marker • Tapestry needle Gauge 19 sts and 25 rows = 4" [10 cm] in garter stitch with 3 strands held together throughout, after blocking.

Saco Stripes Pam Allen

An easy shape lends itself to easy stripes. Next time top, I’ll add more colors or make the stripes a single row wide, pencil-thin and clean. Sparrow is the perfect yarn for an A-line shape; it drapes nicely, very fluid and swingy. Finished measurements 30½ (34, 37½, 41, 44½, 48, 51½, 55)" [77.5 (86.5, 95, 104, 113, 122, 131, 140) cm] bust circumference Sample is 30½" [77.5 cm] with 3½" [9 cm] negative ease Yarn Sparrow by Quince & Co (100% organic linen; 170yd [155m]/50g) • 3 (4, 4, 5, 5, 5, 6, 6) skeins Sans 200 (MC) • 1 skein Pigeon 209 (CC) Needles • One pair in size US 3 [3.25 mm] • One 24" circular needle (circ) in size US 2 [2.75 mm] Or size to obtain gauge Notions •Stitch holder or waste yarn •Tapestry needle Gauge 23 sts and 30 rows = 4" [10 cm] in St st, after blocking.

Casco Bay Cardi Carrie Bostick Hoge

I’m fond of garter stitch, especially worked from the top down in a breezy shape. This is the kind of cardi I’d live in. Worked in two strands of Sparrow held together, it knits up in no time. Finished measurements 35 (38½, 42¼, 46, 49½, 53, 56½, 60)" [89 (98, 107.5, 117, 126, 134.5, 143.5, 152.5) cm] at bust, buttoned Shown in size 35" [89 cm] with 1" [2.5 cm] positive ease Yarn Sparrow by Quince & Co (100% organic linen; 170yd [155m]/50g) • 8 (9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15) skeins Sans 200 Needles • One 29" circular needle (circ) in size US 7 [4.5 mm] • One set double-pointed needles (dpns) in size US 7 [4.5 mm] Or size to obtain gauge Notions • Stitch markers (m) • Stitch holders or waste yarn • Tapestry needle • Six 5/8" [1.5 cm] buttons Gauge 19 sts and 36 rows = 4" [10 cm] in garter stitch with yarn held double, before blocking. 18 sts and 27 rows = 4" [10 cm] in garter stitch with yarn held double, after blocking.

Perkins Cove Pam Allen

Wrapping yarn twice around the needle when you’re making a stitch is an easy way to add texture and interest to simple stockinette. I love how in linen the long stitches stay open and rustic looking. This pullover, worked from the top down, is relatively quick and very easy to make. The body’s slight A-line is shaped by increasing needle size twice on the way down. Finished measurements 31¼ (34, 37, 40, 43, 46, 48¾, 51, 53, 56)" [79.5 (87, 94, 101.5, 109, 116, 124, 129.5, 134.5, 142) cm] bust circumference Shown in size 34" [87 cm] with no ease Yarn Sparrow by Quince & Co (100% organic linen; 170yd [155m]/50g) • 4 (5, 5, 6, 6, 7, 7, 7, 8, 8) skeins Sans 200 Needles • One 32" circular needle (circ) in US size 4 [3.5mm] • One 32" (circ) in US size 5 [3.75mm] • One 32" (circ) in US size 6 [4mm] • One set double-pointed needles (dpns) in US size 4 [3.5mm] Or size to obtain gauge Notions • Removable stitch markers (m) • Waste yarn or stitch holders • Tapestry needle Gauge 22 sts and 32 rnds = 4" [10 cm] in stockinette stitch in the round on smallest needles, after blocking.

Shoals

Carrie Bostick Hoge Shoals features a pretty lace pattern just open enough to be airy, but filled in enough for structure. I made this tank a little longer to allow for more swing at the bottom. Side shaping is done by decreasing needle size as you work your way to the underarm. Finished measurements 30½ (33¼, 36, 38½, 41¼, 44, 46½, 49¼, 52, 54½)" [77.5 (84, 36, 38.5, 41, 44, 46.5, 49, 52, 54.5) cm] Shown in size 33¼" [84 cm] with ¾" [2 cm] negative ease Yarn Sparrow by Quince & Co (100% organic linen; 168yd [155m] / 50g) • 5 (5, 5, 6, 6, 6, 7, 7, 8, 8) skeins Sans 200 Needles • One 32" circular needle (circ) in sizes US 1 [2.25 mm] • One 32" circ in sizes US 2 [2.75 mm] • One 32" circ (circ) in sizes US 3 [3.25 mm] • One 32" circ needle (circ) in sizes US 4 [3.5 mm] Or size to obtain gauge Notions • Stitch marker (m) • Stitch holder or waste yarn • Tapestry needle Gauge 20 sts and 24 rows = 4" [10 cm] in leaf lace with largest needles, after blocking 27 sts and 28 rows = 4" [10 cm] in leaf lace with smallest needles, after blocking.

Harpswell Apron Pam Allen

Sometimes things turn out differently than you’d first thought they would. This began as a simple cardi. (Yes, hard to believe). But shaping in this drop stitch pattern is hard, to say the least. So what can one do with a simple rectangle? This breezy piece, which I happen to love. Finished measurements 31¼ (34, 36½, 39¼, 42, 44½, 47¼, 50, 52½, 55¼)" [79.5 (86.5, 93, 99.5, 106.5, 113, 120, 127, 133.5, 140.5) cm] bust circumference, buttoned, and 33 (35½, 38½, 41½, 44, 46¾, 49½, 52½, 55¼, 58)" [83.5 (90.5, 97.5, 104.5, 112, 119, 126, 133, 140, 147) cm] wide at hip, and 15½" [39.5 cm] long from top edge Shown in size 34" [86.5 cm] with no ease Yarn Sparrow by Quince & Co (100% organic linen; 170yd [155m]/50g) • 3 (4, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 5, 5, 6) skeins Sans 200 Needles • One 24" circular needle (circ) in size US 4 [3.5 mm] • One 24" circ in size US 5 [3.75 mm] • One 24" circ in size US 6 [4 mm] • Two double-pointed needles (dpns) in size US 3 [3.25 mm] Or size to obtain gauge Notions • Tapestry needle • Two 3/8" buttons Gauge 24 sts and 36 rows = 4" [10 cm] in drop stitch pattern on smallest needles, after blocking 23 sts and 35 rows = 4" [10 cm] in drop stitch stitch pattern on largest needles, after blocking.
