THE ZEDDIES' COMMITMENT TO LIFELONG LEARNING AND SERVANT LEADERSHIP GUIDES THEIR LIFE AND CAREER PATHS
JUDY ‘83 AND MICHAEL ZEDDIES
QUINCY
FALL 2023
UNIVERSITY MAGAZINE
Our alumni, no matter how long ago they graduated, tell stories of the people at QU who comforted them, challenged them, and inspired them to do more and to be more. Some of those teachers, staff, and mentors were Franciscan friars, while others were laypeople. Each made a lasting difference in the lives of students.
Today at QU, we use new methods and new technologies to make connections with our students, as part of the campus experience we call Success by Design. We want every student to have the life-changing opportunity to make a lasting and important connection with someone who is a teacher and mentor. With the support of this community, each student should grow not just in knowledge but, more importantly, in wisdom, as our mission statement proclaims.
Our beloved university has always operated at a small and human scale, where no one is a number. But no one should assume that “small” means “simple.” A modern university succeeds because great faculty and dedicated students are supported by staff completing a dizzying array of tasks. Our campus computer networks, complex software applications, beautiful campus landscape, and hundreds of thousands of square feet under roof need the constant attention of skilled professionals. The same is true for the work of our staff who answer student and family questions about financial aid, course credits, textbooks, campus dining, athletic opportunities, mental health support, and many other important necessities of campus life.
Everything we do at Quincy University requires collaboration, with each member of our team working together to make student success possible. I am deeply grateful for the ways in which our team works together, giving many long hours to make possible the transformational experience of a QU education.
If there is a theme where this issue of QUniverse is concerned, that theme is collaboration. In reading these stories, I hope you will discover many of the ways in which collaboration and teamwork make success possible for the members of this remarkable community.
In this particular year, I would be failing as president if I did comment on one enduring collaboration that has made our community so special. Beginning in 1860, the Franciscan friars of what now is the Province of the Sacred Heart founded, staffed, financially supported, and provided steadfast spiritual guidance for the institution that became Quincy University.
These Franciscans, of the Order of Friars Minor, have been admired and loved by generations of students.
Across three centuries, the friars of the Sacred Heart Province, based in St. Louis, have sponsored QU as a Christian and Roman Catholic university open to and supportive of people of all faith traditions. Whether Catholic or not, each of us at QU learns what it means to be part of a loving Franciscan community, with the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi found in our reverence for the environment, for example, and our deep commitment to hospitality.
Today, there are fewer friars in the United States than was once the case. As a result, nearly all of the friars in the United States soon will be consolidated in a single new province, Our Lady of Guadalupe Province, to be based in Atlanta, Georgia.
After 163 years, our special relationship with the Sacred Heart Province will conclude, though we will always keep alive the memory of the 18 friar-presidents and the scores of friars who lived and worked at QU. In the future, though, we will have new opportunities to collaborate more closely with Franciscans from all parts of the U.S. Beginning in October 2023, QU will be one of three universities sponsored by the consolidated province, and we will welcome the opportunity to work in new ways with St. Bonaventure University and with Siena College to continue the wonderful tradition of Franciscan higher education.
May God continue to bless the people of Quincy University. In our new collaboration with the Franciscans and in all our work together, may we follow the admonition of Psalm 133 and be sisters and brothers dwelling together as one!
Sincerely,
Brian McGee, PhD President

SPREADING POSITIVITY
by Chris Brennemann, PhD
“My work and business is what I like to do to relax and have fun. I enjoy building projects with incredible people. Throughout my short business career, I have been able to network and work with some amazing individuals who have built incredible businesses.”
- Zach Willing senior business management major at QU
Zach Willing begins his senior year this fall with some additional responsibilities and opportunities. Zach is a leader on the men’s tennis team, and he is the founder and manager of the HeyYou Project, a business designed to spread positivity and promote mental well-being.
“We started by creating products that had positive messages on the back that strangers could read behind you. The whole goal was to not only provide a cool product, but also have it impact people around those individuals wearing it.” HeyYou Project gear includes t-shirts, hoodies, crewnecks, hats, bracelets, and phone cases with messages like “The world is a better place with you in it,” and “Dear person behind me, you look good today. Lots of love, the person in front of you.”
HeyYou Project
is a brand that is dedicated to spreading positivity and promoting mental well-being through a unique range of apparel and accessories. Products are designed with uplifting messages, inspirational quotes, and affirmations that encourage people to stay positive, confident, and focused on their goals while also raising awareness for mental health and suicide prevention.
QUniverse | Fall 2023 2
QU | Student Spotlight
PROMOTING MENTAL WELL-BEING
The products are motivational as is Zach’s approach to managing the business. When asked how the project is going, Zach replied, “HeyYou Project is always doing good. The main objective of our brand isn’t about just sales and revenue; it’s about how big of an impact we can make. The brand isn’t dictated by money. It’s dictated by the good we do for other people.”
The HeyYou Project donates 15% of their net profit to mental health and suicide prevention organizations.
In the near future, HeyYou Project is looking to launch an app, board game, and eventually software that allows people to communicate with mental health doctors from anywhere in the world.
They are also focusing on enhancing their Hoodies for the Homeless by HeyYou Project, a partnership with The GiveBack Community in Miami Florida to hand out food and hoodies to the homeless.
Zach’s work ethic and commitment to positivity is also evident in his tennis game and interaction with the team. The tennis program is the primary reason Zach chose to attend QU. Zach says what he enjoys most about the sport relates to his teammates and the competitive nature of tennis.
“I am a very competitive person, both in sports and in business, so tennis gives me that opportunity to be competitive in other areas of my life and not just in business.” Zach appreciates that his teammates are from countries all over the world and that he is exposed to cultures he would not experience anywhere else.
As Zach considers his total QU experience, academically, athletically and professionally, he says he owes a great deal to his teammates. “As my path evolves, I find myself increasingly involved in managing teams of both American colleagues and individuals from various corners of the globe.”
Zach adds that the ability to comprehend different cultures and identify what may be considered offensive or uplifting to them has become very important. “Keeping a cohesive and efficient work environment relies heavily on this understanding. It is through my interactions with my teammates that I have honed my skills in facilitating effective teamwork.”

I’ve known Zach for about nine years now. The one thing that hasn’t changed is his demeanor. On and off the court, Zach holds high standards for himself and will always put in his best effort. This is the reason he has been so successful, not only on the tennis court but with his business as well. I’m proud to see Zach’s growth through his collegiate career.

Some carried flowers or balloons; a few braced for the forecast of volatile weather, toting umbrellas and cooling vests. All brought high spirits and pride in the 146 graduates and 32 master’s degree recipients honored during Quincy University’s 160th Spring Commencement.
Graduating psychology major, Crystal Middendorf, was selected by her classmates to deliver the welcome. She focused on the lessons in Franciscan values brought home to this class by their unique experience of the pandemic, which shifted the university to remote learning during the first spring break of their university careers.
Despite challenges, Middendorf said, the experience yielded renewed friendships, personal acceptance, skill in creating “mask smiles,” and completion of 100+ service hours. “That was when the definition of Franciscan values finally sank in, and I could not be more thankful for all of you during this journey as we picked up the pieces together.”
She quoted her mother, translating from the original Chinese: “ ‘bu pa man, jiu pa zhan.’ This translates to ‘be not afraid of growing slowly, only of staying still.’ In other words, if you're someone who thinks you're on top of the world, hey, fantastic. But all I ask is that you bring everyone else to your level in order to keep going. Nobody should walk alone, even if they are ahead of others.”
“The second phrase my mom taught me is ‘jiaoxue xiangzhang’ which translates to ‘both the student and the teacher learn from the lectures.’ ”
Also recognized were four honorary degree recipients: George ‘63 and Mary Nell (Frier) Meyer ‘63, John P. Shibles ’69, and Fr. Thomas Nairn, O.F.M. ’71.
In accepting their honorary degrees, the recipients added their own memories and advice. Dr. George Meyer ’63 cited Habit Four of Stephen Covey’s Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. “Think Win/Win,” he counseled. “Giving to an endowed scholarship is a triple win—a win for the students who receive the aid, a win for QU in attracting students, and a win for the donor to honor professors who have spent so much time on their behalf.”
John Shibles ’69 dedicated his honor to all his classmates of 1969. “The only thing constant in life is change. Just embrace that. Good luck, congratulations, and do it your way,” he concluded, recalling the Frank Sinatra hit song of his graduation year.
Fr. Tom Nairn ’71 reflected on the upcoming merger of the Franciscan provinces that will fold QU’s long-term sponsor, the Sacred Heart Province, into the U.S. Province of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
In such times of facing the unknown, he urged graduates to remember QU’s commitment to “knowledge that leads to wisdom.” He cited St. Francis, who called wisdom “the queen of Franciscan values. Knowledge can help us understand the what of life; wisdom gives us the why. Wisdom opens our minds and our hearts. It takes us on a journey of life-long self-discovery.”

- CRYSTAL MIDDENDORF ’23
The Commencement address was delivered by Dr. Vicky Eidson ’86, professor of accounting and a distinguished senior faculty member. She called on students to “reflect on your past, celebrate your present achievements, and dream of your future.”
Carrying a sturdy backpack, Eidson reminded the group of their arrival on campus loaded down with college essentials, both tangible and intangible, many provided by parents and mentors. As time unfolded, they removed some things and replaced them with new passions: “People may be able to describe you by looking at the contents of your backpack,” Eidson said.
“As you progressed through college, you decided what to keep in your backpack and what to remove. Look back and reflect on the ideas of what you wanted and could do--existing study habits, prejudices, biases, stereotypes.” As students encountered times of celebration and pain, “the moments that made your backpack heavier actually resulted in stronger shoulders.”
Helping a struggling friend to carry his or her backpack “equipped you with greater resilience and a stronger sense of empathy,” Eidson noted. “Did you remove things that weighed you down and take out others to share with others? What tools have you added to your backpack?”
She urged graduates to treasure the individual backpacks they carry into the future, “full of experiences, knowledge, friendships, and tools to help you to continue to grow and restock as you continue your life journey,” reminding them to always “take with you the love and legacy of Quincy University.”
As the crowd streamed out of the stadium, the small black cloud released a spring downpour, but nothing could dampen the Hawk spirit, confirmed by love and legacy.

A SEEN OPPORTUNITY.
Matt Schissel understood the challenge he created for the Quincy University baseball team would be seen as daunting by some.
He saw it as an opportunity.
The Hawks opened the 2023 season with a seven-game trip to Florida to face two perennial powers Tampa and Rollins. Rollins ranked in the national top 25 and ended up reaching the NCAA Division II World Series. Quincy’s ability to practice outside before the February departure date was limited, but Schissel had faith his players were ready to face whatever came their way.
“We go all year long and you see the same teams in the top 10 more or less,” Schissel said.
You hear about Tampa every year. You hear about Rollins. I want our guys to see, ‘Hey, we’re right there.’ is is a trip that is going to give our guys that chance to understand this is Division II baseball, you’re right there, all is good.

Hawk Talk | QU
Quincy is and will be part of national contender conversations moving forward.
The Hawks went 4-3 on that road trip, winning the seasonopening series at Tampa and setting the tone for a dazzling season that ended with a championship ring and a bevy of school records.
More importantly, for those players returning and the recruits who have committed to the Hawks, the expectation level remains high, maybe as high as it ever has been. Schissel and his staff have assembled a roster capable of meeting those expectations.
Still, it will be tough to top what the 2023 Hawks accomplished.

Quincy finished with a 47-11 record, setting the singleseason record for victories. Along the way, the Hawks won 17 consecutive games, swept their way to the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament championship and sent Northwood and Wayne State home after the Midwest Regional.
This was just the sixth team in program history to win at least 40 games, become the fifth QU team to win the GLVC Tournament title and capture the GLVC regular-season championship with a 27-5 record.
Much of the success was built around a ball-crushing offense that jacked 131 home runs, setting new QU and GLVC singleseason records. Junior catcher Luke Napleton smashed 29 home runs to lead all of NCAA Division II and break the QU and GLVC records in the process.
In fact, six different Hawks hit at least 11 home runs. In the Midwest Regional, the top-seeded Hawks outscored their three opponents 33-11 while belting 12 home runs.
Brock Boynton, Senior Center Fielder
“You have to worry about the long ball, you have to worry about the small ball, and you have to worry about one through nine. You better pray you’re not going to get what’s going to come to you out of our bullpen because it’s a scary sight.”
Napleton became the sixth GLVC Player of the Year and fourth Midwest Region Player of the Year in program history, along with earning first-team All-American honors. He was one of six QU players to be named to first-team All-GLVC and first-team All-Midwest Region.
Among those was senior first baseman Lance Logsdon, who graduated as the all-time leader in hits, doubles, RBIs and walks. Junior shortstop Gino D’Alessio set a new single-season record with 86 runs scored. Senior right-hander Spencer Walker went 9-2 and completed his career with a 24-5 record, the fourth most wins in program history.
And Schissel became the first coach at QU in the NCAA Division II era to receive a national honor when he was named the NCBWA National Coach of the Year.
Better yet, Schissel and the Hawks raised the bar to a new level, a place they want to stay for as long as possible.
They are in the conversation. That was the goal when February began.
11 www.quincy.edu
ere is a di erent atmosphere that comes when you step into QU Stadium.
No wonder the Hawks racked up an abundance of postseason honors.
We have to play the type of teams we’re facing on this trip to garner that national respect (Schissel said before that Florida trip). We’re knocking on the door. We have to take what we’ve done and keep pushing forward.

I AM THANKFUL THAT I AM A LIFELONG LEARNER
Judy Zeddies ‘83 is the director of Printmaking and Book Arts at Lillstreet Art Center in Chicago, an art school, art gallery, and artist studio space that accommodates artists working in a wide variety of media.
Judy received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Quincy University and a Master of Fine Arts in Printmaking & Drawing from Northern Illinois University. She has also studied printmaking at Chicago Printmakers Collaborative and at Ox-Bow School of Art in Saugatuck, MI.
Judy is grateful for the variety of positions she’s held and for the managerial and maintenance skills she has gained from her college classes and throughout her professional experience. As director of Printmaking and Book Arts at Lillstreet Art Center, Judy hires teachers, plans the schedule, orders supplies and makes sure the studio runs as smoothly as possible. She teaches classes including letterpress, relief, screen-printing and monotype printmaking. Judy also serves as a mentor for her department’s artist-in-residence at Lillstreet.
Judy’s journey to Quincy started with a weekend campus tour. As a Chicago native, she also visited the campuses of some larger colleges, but the more intimate size of Quincy College seemed a better fit for her.
Judy also notes that QC’s academic scholarships were key factors in choosing Quincy. She and her twin sister were first generation college students, and their widowed mother had few financial resources to offset college expenses.
QU | Alumni Feature
QUniverse | Fall 2023 14
Judy has great respect for the instruction and mentorship she received at QC and specifically through the art department. She says that while her fellow art majors enhanced her educational and social enjoyment, her favorite professor, Robert Lee (Bob) Mejer, truly stood out. She recalls several key experiences that Bob afforded to art majors including organizing groups to go to Des Moines for a biennial printmaking symposium, which gave all students a taste of larger printmaking possibilities.
As a senior, Judy sought Bob Mejer’s advice as she applied to graduate schools and was accepted at Northern Illinois University in ceramics. She was more interested in printmaking, but Bob advised
I TRUST I AM PUTTING IN THE EXTRA EFFORT FOR MY STUDENTS
that her portfolio was stronger in ceramics. Judy applied with the understanding that, once she was accepted, she could get to know the print professors and change to that concentration. “Our plan worked perfectly, and I received my MFA in spring of 1986.”
Judy initially sought her MFA hoping to teach at the college level like Bob Mejer, and although Judy does not hold a traditional college instructor position, she adds, “I trust I am putting in the extra effort for my students at Lillstreet the same way Bob does for his students.”
In addition to her education providing a strong foundation in her art practice, Judy says that she also learned to work independently and strive for goals that
seemed a bit out of reach at that time. For example, she learned the basics of using power tools in her art classes and has continued to build on those skills and the use of media types in her artwork.
“I am thankful that I am a lifelong learner.”
Judy’s consistent commitment to the pursuit of knowledge and to servant leadership is in direct keeping with the Franciscan values that are the foundation of Quincy University. She says these values have guided her life and career paths.
One defining moment for Judy, personally and professionally, was entering an art piece into the Quincy Art Center regional art competition her senior year and having that piece win a prize and be purchased. Since then, she has been accepted into hundreds of juried exhibitions and art fairs and sold thousands of works, but in her words...
“That first one was pretty special.” Judy and Michael Zeddies value giving back to their communities and good causes as a way to share some of their time and funds with not-for-profits that are doing important work for society and the environment. They often choose organizations that have an educational component.

Merger Goals
Our Lady of Guadalupe: New Franciscan Province
Contributors: Fr. John Doctor, OFM ’72,
Fr. John Eaton, OFM ’71,
Fr. Joseph Zimmerman, OFM, and Paul Brown ’65
In October, the Franciscan Province of the Sacred Heart, founder of Quincy University, will merge with five other Franciscan provinces to become Our Lady of Guadalupe Province. The merger has two goals: to re-energize the Franciscan spirit in the United States and to be more effective with its workforce.
The diminishment of members in each of the provinces was calling for a reconfiguration. For example, the Sacred Heart Province went from 800 friars in 1972 to 136 friars today. There will be under 1,000 Franciscan brothers and priests in the new province, down from over 3,250 in the U.S. in the early 1970s.
Fr. John Doctor, OFM ’72, Quincy University Vice President for Mission and Ministry, comments, “St. Francis of Assisi exhorted the friars before his passing from this life to the next: Christ has taught me what to do, may Christ teach you what you are to do. This exhortation has applied to the friars throughout the ages. When the friars of the six provinces contemplate what is ours to do in light of our times, it was obvious that the provinces could not continue to do what they have always done.”
QUniverse | Fall 2023 16 QU | Franciscan Focus
Re-energize the Franciscan spirit in the United States
Be more effective with its workforce
While members of the Sacred Heart Province may mourn the loss of being members of their own province, Fr. John says they can also celebrate a new birth of the presence of the Franciscan friars in the United States, as Our Lady of Guadalupe Province.
Franciscans of the Sacred Heart Province have delivered 163 years of service to the institution we now call Quincy University, and they have continued to provide faculty, staff, trustees, volunteers and funding. More than 300 Franciscans, working with many lay individuals, have devoted these years to the education of thousands of students who have gone on to help make the world a better place.
With the formation of the new province, there is the question of what ministries will be maintained and what new ministries will emerge in response to the needs of our times. There is agreement that higher education will remain an important ministry. The presidents of St. Bonaventure University and Siena College, both in New York state, and Quincy University have already begun working together. All three institutions will remain Franciscan and be supported by the new province.
“The friars of the Sacred Heart Province are grateful to everyone for your prayers and financial support during the 165 years that we have ministered here in the United States. Though the province’s name will change, the ministries will continue to need your prayers and support. Please grow with us into the new Our Lady of Guadalupe Province,” said Fr. John Eaton, OFM ’71, Provincial Vicar for the Sacred Heart Province.
Fr. Joe Zimmerman, OFM, added his insightful perspective, “‘It is in God’s hands’ is a pious cliché, but in the case of Catholic religious orders, it is more than a cliché. We do not know what the future holds. Our vocation right now is to stay as faithful as we can to the vision of Francis of Assisi and to see if the Lord will call us to greater changes or greater numbers. It’s happened before in the Church’s history. The Lord provides.”

INVEST IN YOURSELF AND ADVANCE YOUR CAREER WITH A GRADUATE DEGREE FROM QU
by Chris Brennemann, PhD
Quincy University offers fast, flexible, and affordable graduate programs in business administration, education, and education in counseling.
Graduates from QU's master’s programs have gone on to become entrepreneurs, teachers, school counselors, licensed mental health practitioners, directors and administrators.
QU’s Coordinator of Graduate and Professional Studies, Maranda Stumo, provides outcomes-driven responses to some key factors to consider when pursuing a master’s degree.
WHY EARN A MASTER’S DEGREE?
The career opportunities will be a lot better and more varied for you than they would be without having a master’s degree. It puts you on the fast track for success.
Another great benefit of earning your master’s degree is the versatility. You will be qualified for the niche field that your master’s degree represents. It will also qualify you for a broader spectrum of careers in that career field.
A master’s degree makes you more marketable. One of the most obvious reasons for obtaining a master’s degree is you will have higher earning potential.
QUniverse | Fall 2023 18 QU | Academic Feature
QU Master’s Programs are accredited by The Higher Learning Commission.
QU GRADUATE PROGRAMS ACCREDITATION AND AWARDS
Current graduate student, Anna Peters, says that a variety of life experiences led her to pursue a master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling. Her ultimate goal is to open a private practice.
“The MEC program has helped me hone in on the skills I have and build new ones. The instructors are very encouraging and supportive every step of the way. Classes are both large enough to have a diverse group but also small enough to make a comfortable class environment.”
WHY EARN A MASTER’S DEGREE FROM QU?
All of the QU graduate programs facilitate personal and professional growth by combining academic rigor with experiential learning and service to the community. QU provides a caring, compassionate environment that fosters growth and development so graduate students are able to reach their full potential.
QU post-graduate professors are active in their fields and incorporate real-life experience into research and applications of course material.
“Each of the master’s programs offered at QU will prepare you for high demand jobs both locally and in other areas of the country and internationally. Due to the small class sizes, master’s students get the opportunity to have close relationships with their instructors and peers as well as be part of a community that values learning and service to others,” said Maranda Stumo, coordinator of graduate and professional studies.
ARE THERE ANY MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT PURSUING A MASTER’S DEGREE AT QU?
One misconception is that the tuition is not affordable because QU is a private university. QU’s tuition is very comparable to other similar institutions. Additionally, many people think that they have to pay out of state tuition, but that is not the case. Since QU is a private university, no one pays out of state tuition.
Sometimes people assume that, since QU is a Catholic university, it is only for people of the Catholic faith. In keeping with our Franciscan values, QU respects the significance and worth of people from all walks of life. Everyone is welcome at QU.
As Coordinator of Graduate and Professional Studies, Maranda Stumo oversees all aspects of QU's graduate and professional studies and is responsible for fostering the academic strength of the program and supporting the educational and professional success of QU graduate students.
Maranda has a Master's of Education in Counseling from Southeastern Louisiana University. She has served in multiple positions in higher education for over 20 years including academic advising, teaching, counseling and directing.

NEW PROGRAMS IN DEMANDING FIELDS CELEBRATE FIRST GRADUATES
by Chris Brennemann, PhD
This spring, Quincy University recognized the first graduates of the cybersecurity and business analytics majors that were created through funding by the U.S. Dept. of Education Title III: Strengthening Institutions Program.
Cybersecurity is a career focus in computer science with strong demand today and is predicted to grow rapidly in the future as information security analysts will be needed to create innovative solutions to prevent hackers from stealing critical information or causing problems for computer networks.
Paden Lewis, Spring ’23 cybersecurity graduate, will continue his education by pursuing his master’s degree and plans to become an analyst or a technician in the cybersecurity field.
This grant enabled QU to launch two majors with new lab facilities and current professional software. Expanded undergraduate research labs, a robotics lab, and a math success program were also funded by the grant.
To succeed in the cybersecurity field, students need up-to-the-minute preparation with the latest coursework and training and the most powerful technology. Thanks to the U.S.D.E. Title III grant, Quincy University has constructed a dedicated Cybersecurity Computer Lab and a dynamic, robust curriculum.
The Quincy University business analytics program is focused on preparing Oakley School of Business students with the necessary background and skills to use business analytics and the associated technologies to solve complex problems for their clients and employers. This includes healthcare, accounting, marketing, operations managements and many other industries.
The Title III grant and support from Quincy University has allowed the program to provide the necessary resources and training so that students are enabled with the latest technology in business analytics.
Dana Walker, DMgt, highlighted some standout moments for the business analytics program which include employers seeking students for jobs in the industry even before they graduate, the rapid growth of the program, and the inclusion of ethics and Franciscan values as a key component of the program.

“My classmates and I implemented a software based firewall and then a hardware based firewall for our capstone project.”
-Paden Lewis Spring ’23 cybersecurity graduate
“The courses and the program itself focus on an experiential approach. This means the students learn by doing,” said Walker. “Students enjoy the hands-on approach and quickly gain an appreciation of the problem complexity and necessity of critical thinking, good analytical skills, and need for clear written and verbal communication skills.”
Kassidy Venvertloh graduated this May with a triple major in accounting, finance and business analytics, and she is one of the first three students to earn a degree in the university’s new business analytics major.
These three majors offered Venvertloh not only a challenge but a new perspective on the business world and on herself. While accounting looks at making financial statements, finance interprets the financial statements, and business analytics focuses on using data to make business decisions.
“It all kind of blends together. You see the business as a whole. Yes, it’s a lot of classes, a lot of homework, but pushing yourself, saying you can do it, it’s possible, you learn where your limitations are.”

I spent 20 years in television broadcast news and four years in non-profit work. This year (2023-24) will be my tenth in higher education.
I spent that time in the newsroom in almost every capacity, from reporter, producer, anchor, to assignment editor and news director. I had a front row seat to many incredible events and took my responsibility to represent the public and present the truth seriously.
need
The experience I bring to the classroom is the knowledge of how the news industry works on a day-to-day level. The ability to tell a multimedia story is valued in news organizations, but also in corporations, non-profits, churches, and any entity that has a story to tell. The connection between having done the job you are teaching and helping students realize their full potential is the most rewarding aspect of being in the classroom.

NORA BALDNER Assistant Professor

I have a decade of experience in the television industry as well as several years in public relations. I have experience as a news and live events producer, reporter, videographer, and production assistant.
In 2009, I transitioned to teaching full-time for QU. The following year I re-launched the then-defunct QUTV broadcast program. After two grants, we’ve grown from a small studio space in the basement of Friar’s Hall to a state-of-the-art media production studio at North Campus. I’ve also put my media production experience to use at QU by developing a film and new media minor.
Our programs are pre-professional in nature, and because of our backgrounds, we’re able to prepare graduates for what to expect when they leave QU. Not only are they well trained; they also have a sense of what day-to-day life will be like in their professions.
I’ve served as a full-time or part-time faculty member and administrator since 1975. In the 1980s, a student I had taught during grad school asked me for business writing advice, which led to three decades of consulting as a public relations and advertising copywriter.
Writing for clients develops a keen awareness of audience—and plenty of humility. It takes practice for students to risk writing for a world beyond the classroom, and I encourage them with stories of the many occasions when copy I considered brilliant was sent back to me swimming in oceans of rejection-red ink.
CHRIS BRENNEMANN
Adjunct professor and director of QU community relations
I’ve worked in radio, television and marketing for 35 years in a variety of roles including announcing, producing, directing, consulting and radio station management.
My years in the industry mirror my time in higher education. As a full-time university faculty member [prior to joining QU in my current role], I assisted institutions and personal clients with marketing campaigns and audio/video production. As a full-time practitioner in the media and marketing industry at WGEM/Quincy Media, I served as an adjunct at QU.
I pull industry experience into almost all lectures in relevant classes including real-life examples and case studies. Students educated by communication professors with industry experience gain real-life experience and opportunities to apply their material so they are more equipped for internships and job opportunities

For profiles of QU alums in professional life...
Adjunct professor and director of QU experiential learning
Adjunct professor and QU digital media production coordinator
I am the marketing manager at WGEM, overseeing the award-winning team of commercial and promotions producers. I am the brand manager and oversee the station's marketing initiatives.
My entire professional career has been at WGEM, starting part-time in 1989 a few weeks after I began freshman classes at QU. Upon graduating from QU with a Communication degree, I started as a radio assistant, responsible for putting sports radio announcers on the air during QU sports broadcasts. TV studio and control room duties were next, followed by writing, shooting, and editing commercials. I have been a lecturer in communication since 2001, teaching Advanced Video Production and Principles of TV Production.
As an undergrad working closely with the WGEM news staff, I was able to offer special insight that was an addition to what was being taught. As an adjunct, since they are not too far away from entering the workforce, I look at my students as potential future employees and teach accordingly.
I’ve spent 25 years in a communication field and 23 in higher education. I started my career as an admissions counselor in the St. Louis and local areas. I have spent the last 18 years helping students with Career Services, Study Abroad, and Internships.
As a Public Speaking professor, I use my career development background to help students with elevator speeches, interviews preparation, and professional presentations.
I’ve had an amazing career spanning 48 years in the broadcast industry, where I held various positions including news photographer, on-air weather and sports anchor, and production and promotion manager. Toward the end of my tenure, I served as the director of operations and engineering, overseeing a master control room hub for Quincy Media. We were innovators in many areas including the build-out of our centralized master control room facilities within the company and upgrading analog broadcast facilities to digital.
Mentoring college students during my time in the industry was a source of pride for me, and it's fulfilling. In 2009, I began teaching as an adjunct professor at QU, where I imparted my knowledge in the communications field. Through my connection with Quincy Media, we were able to design and build Quincy University’s first broadcast production studio. There are countless stories of success worth mentioning. One particularly notable example involves a graduate who has risen to become a prime-time news anchor in the St. Louis market. Numerous other alumni have made their mark in diverse roles within the industry. Two students whom I had the privilege to mentor are now employed in the professional sports world, working with organizations like MLB, the NBA, the NFL, and college sports teams.

As you may know by now, QU continued to receive record-breaking levels of support from alumni across the nation, of all ages, which allows us to continue to serve our students in a way very few institutions of higher learning are able to do.
• Thanks to you, our highest QU fund goal in our history ($1.3M) was not only met but exceeded by almost two percent. A special thanks to QU Fund Chair Jim Mooney ‘70 and his wife and new QU Board of Trustee member Mary Mooney. Their support and leadership of this successful campaign helped fund numerous items across campus, ranging from scholarships to faculty development to homecoming activities and much, much more.
• In addition to all of this, $1,199,914 was raised in restricted funds to support academic and athletic programs, student clubs and organizations, and facility improvements.
• Additionally, our number of donors giving to QU in any fashion was the highest in the past 15 years. Our faculty and staff support remained a remarkable 98% which is unique to our region and most certainly one of the highest percentages of any college or university nationwide.
My wife and I are honored to be members of the Quincy and Quincy University communities and have been privileged to meet many of you. We hope to meet many more of you in the coming months ahead. Thanks again for all you do for QU and our students and for making this such a fantastic year.

Honor Roll of Donors | 2022—2023 53 www.quincy.edu FUEL YOUR PASSIONS WITH CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITIES A charitable gift annuity is a simple contract under which a not-for-profit organization, like Quincy University – in return for a transfer of cash, marketable securities or other assets – agrees to pay a fixed amount of money to the donor for their lifetime. The donor establishes a fund which provides a current tax deduction, plus a stream of tax advantaged income with attractive interest rates. PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR HEART IS. BENEFITS FOR YOU: • Lifetime payments • Income tax deduction • No probate on donated assets • Ensure long-term stability for the not-for-profit organization TO LEARN MORE, CONTACT: MATT BERGMAN | bergmma@quincy.edu | 217-228-5221

The QU aviation program allows Anthony to obtain his pilot certification while earning a degree. Anthony adds, “This is amazing because it will help me be more of a well-rounded person continuing my career goals.”
Anthony is from the northwest suburbs of Chicago so coming to a smaller university in a city the size of Quincy was a big transition for him, but being able to recognize so many people on campus definitely make him feel more comfortable.
After graduation, Anthony plans to become a flight instructor. Once he has enough flight hours, his goal is to become an airline pilot or a private pilot for a business.

“I am very thankful to be chosen for these scholarships and to be able to continue my aviation education at Quincy University.”

“We will never forget all the FUN, education, and friends we made and continue to make at Quincy University.”
MICHAEL KIRCHNER ’74 says Quincy University was among the best four years of his youth. He adds that Father F.J. Gray, his advisor and history professor, and the other Franciscans and the non-Franciscan faculty made Quincy University so special.
Michael earned his BS in History in 1974. He met his future wife, Joanne Hettinger, in a freshman tour of the Library. JOANNE earned her BS in Elementary Education in 1974 and taught elementary school for 38 years primarily in Beardstown, Illinois. Joanne became CLOSE FRIENDS with many of her Quincy University teachers and remains close to several of her QU classmates.
Michael says that although he was a history major, Father F.J. used to tell him he should go into politics. Father F.J.’s ADVICE STUCK with Michael. He taught for close to 13 years and then was elected as County Clerk and Recorder in Cass County, Illinois, where he served for 28 years.
“We support Quincy University because we feel it is important to GIVE BACK and support our Alma Mater,” says Michael. “We want current and future Quincy University students to EXPERIENCE the Catholic education and joy of attending a special school and a town like Quincy.”
The Kirchners also support the Franciscan and faculty Scholarships, and they ENCOURAGE ALUMNI to give back financially to Quincy University and keep it such the special place that it continues to be.
“Quincy University was our HOME away from home and always will be.”
