QUINCY UNIVERSITY

DO WHAT IS NECESSARY, THEN DO WHAT IS POSSIBLE. THEN SUDDENLY, YOU’LL BE DOING WHAT YOU ONCE THOUGHT WAS IMPOSSIBLE. At QU, I had the opportunity

LINDA MOORE ’81
“At Quincy University, we are determined to provide students with the resources they need to consider many possibilities, explore their passions, and make big life decisions.”
“So, what do you want to do for the rest of your life?”

Like many university presidents, my career began as a faculty member. I taught my first courses and began the wonderful work of advising students nearly 35 years ago.

Long before there was sophisticated computer software to help with the task, part of my job was to make sure students registered for the right courses and made steady progress towards completing their degrees. More importantly, though, good advising also helps students discern their personal and professional goals and make a plan for achieving those goals. The best advising moments always feel like a great conversation, which the student hopefully leaves with new insights about an exciting future.

As an advisor, I soon discovered that asking the hard question – what do you want to do for the rest of your life? – usually turned into a good discussion about goals and how to form them and pursue them. To help students answer this question, on their own timetable and in their own way, is one of the best reasons to join the faculty ranks.

At Quincy University, our generations of students have had tremendous opportunities to make wonderful connections with assigned advisors and with all the faculty and staff who have always made this place so special. Over and over again, alumni tell me stories about life-changing moments, when a meeting with a friar or some other member of the QU community led someone to alter all previous plans for the future.

In this issue of QUniverse, we have several examples of alumni and others linked to Quincy University who took the road less traveled. Whether we consider Dr. Linda Moore’s time in leadership at ESPN or Fr. Dentino’s journey from drummer to priest, a QU alumna or alumnus always has the opportunity to chart the unexpected course or take the surprising turn. Others, like Dr. Luaders, make an early decision and pursue their one, true passion, whether for a few years or for many decades.

President McGee speaks here to the graduates and parents at the 2024 commencement. Woe to the new graduate who doesn’t attempt to sing

the alma mater.

At Quincy University, we are determined to provide students with the resources they need to consider many possibilities, explore their passions, and make big life decisions. For us, our Success by Design program is intended not just to support students when they take their most challenging courses, but also to choose the right path for their own future. The resources we provide our students include courses taught by great faculty, along with advising, mentoring, and coaching, and an abundance of opportunities outside the classroom provided by faculty and staff. For many students -- and at least one president -- time spent in the beautiful QU chapel and in prayerful reflection may be part of the religious and spiritual journey needed to answer life’s most fundamental questions. Ephesians 4:1-16, after all, speaks to God’s expectations for a life’s journey.

Our students are best prepared for their own bright futures when they try new things at QU, as the members of our dance team might suggest. (See their story elsewhere in this QUniverse.) We will keep giving our students innovative ways to explore and to challenge themselves at QU. We will keep adding new programs and renovating the beloved buildings on our campus. But, our commitment to the transformation of student lives, one conversation at a time, will never change.

So, alumni, friends, Hawks: Whatever your age, what do you want to do for the rest of your life?

Sincerely,

Brian McGee, PhD President

“QU has given me a place where I am able to reach my full potential in becoming a teacher. The education program is so amazing. All of the professors want to see me succeed, and they work with me to get to that point.”

MORGAN WIDMER

Dancing INTO EDUCATION

hen Morgan Widmer transferred to Quincy University, the QU dance team and head coach were instrumental in drawing her to campus.

“When I was trying to figure out which school to transfer to, I received a phone call from Brenna Phillips, head coach of the dance team, and we started talking about the dance team, which ultimately led to my decision on picking QU.”

Morgan’s been dancing since she was two years old when her mom put her in a dance class, and in Morgan’s words, “I ended up loving it!” She did competitive dance for two years at a studio and then moved to a non-competitive studio. After high school, she was on the dance team at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville for one season, and now Morgan is on the Quincy University Hawkettes dance team.

“When I heard Morgan was wanting to come to Quincy, I immediately got ahold of her and worked out the details,” said dance coach Brenna Phillips. “I knew her energy and determination was just what the team needed. She has exceeded my expectations as a Hawkette dancer. Morgan is such a light, and her presence on the team has made us stronger as a whole.”

Not only does Morgan love the sport of dancing, she uses dance as a stress reliever and is grateful for the friendships she is building through dance. “Because of this sport, I have found my best friends and something I am passionate about.”

In addition to performing at halftime at QU basketball games, the dance team participates in competition dances. Last season, they competed in three competitive dances and made it to the national dance competition, placing in all three dance categories.

HER WHY

While the opportunity to be on the dance team brought Morgan to QU, the education degree program keeps her here. Morgan is an elementary education major. She credits the education professors for helping her reach her full potential in becoming a teacher.

“Being a student athlete isn’t always easy, but the professors here know what we are going through and are always there with a helping hand.”

Morgan appreciates all the instructors in the education program, but she says that Dr. Christina Priebe really stands out. “She is the most kind and influential woman I have ever met and has been the most helpful with getting me where I need to go at QU. She is always there to talk and help me with whatever I need.”

Dr. Christina Priebe, Director of Teacher Education and Assistant Professor of Education, says Morgan is an outgoing and passionate teacher candidate. “Her strong connections within the community and her desire for first-hand experiences have allowed unique opportunities to be incorporated into our classes. You can never be upset as a professor when you have Morgan in your class. Her passion for teaching lights up the room!”

2023 MISS ADAMS COUNTY FAIR QUEEN

“I started off doing pageants when I was 7 years old. I won Little Miss Quincy in 2011. I have learned so many life skills that I use in my everyday life such as public speaking, interview skills and so much more.”

CELEBRATING THE CLASS OF ’24

THE 161ST SPRING COMMENCEMENT CELEBRATED 168 GRADUATES, INCLUDING 145 EARNING BACHELOR’S DEGREES AND 23 GRADUATE DEGREE RECIPIENTS.

The QU Baseball Hawks were on the road for a postseason game on Commencement day as fellow graduates gathered on their home field before entering QU Stadium on the morning of May 11, 2024.

Selected by his peers to deliver the official welcome, graduate Jesse Mose reminded the group that their experience of learning during the pandemic had prepared them to deal with uncertainty.

“Choose the path and pursue the goal that gives you the most peace of mind, and everything else will fall in line,” he said.

“The first step to living a smashingly successful life is to be open to new ideas and perspectives. Second, hold true to your beliefs and morals. Treat others as you would like to be treated. Lastly, be yourself. You deserve a life filled with things that make you happy.”

DELMER MITCHELL ECHOES JESSE'S THOUGHTS

I URGE YOU TO START EACH DAY BY TREATING IT AS A GIFT FROM GOD. I CAN ASSURE YOU THAT IT WILL CHANGE YOUR ENTIRE OUTLOOK AS TO HOW YOU TREAT EACH DAY AND HOW YOU USE IT.

speaker Delmer Mitchell, honorary degree recipient and chair of the QU Board of Trustees from 2018 to 2023.

Mitchell advises, “Try to live each day with passion for the purpose of making a positive difference for those around you and for God's Kingdom. Start each day by praying for wisdom and guidance. Regardless of how smart we might be or wise we might think we are and how much we think we have it all together, we can use divine guidance and wisdom.”

“Also, if you start each day with a prayer of thanks for what you have, it will help you have a greater awareness and give you a greater appreciation of life.”

He encouraged the graduates to “treat others with politeness, kindness, consideration, and respect. The flip side of this is don't be envious, jealous, unforgiving, selfish or hateful. This will be excess baggage and will pull you down.

“Be willing to prepare and work toward your goals. Pursue what catches your heart, not what catches your mind. Find what you love to do, learn to do it well, and in all likelihood, things will turn out very well for you, and you will be happy doing it.”

INSPIRING GUIDANCE FROM “CADET MAXIM”

EXCELLENCE CAN BE ATTAINED IF YOU:

CARE MORE THAN OTHERS THINK IS WISE, RISK MORE THAN OTHERS THINK IS SAFE, DREAM MORE THAN OTHERS THINK IS PRACTICAL, AND EXPECT MORE THAN OTHERS THINK IS POSSIBLE.

Recalling his own experience, Mitchell urged students to seek good mentors. “Not only will they provide you with their wisdom and knowledge, but the mentors will provide support and encouragement.”

“In addition, work towards developing strong friendships. Friendships are invaluable to a happy and successful life. I encourage you to put forth the effort to keep some of the friendships you have made during your time here at Quincy University. Friendships are worth the effort that it takes to keep them.”

With those words in mind, the graduates stepped into their futures carrying a formula for daily satisfaction and durable success.

The Baseball Hawks were victorious on the road that day, and back home the stadium was filled with winners.

TAKING GAME DAY TO THE NEXT LEVEL

STUNT & CHEER VARSITY PROGRAM

Quincy University is starting a STUNT & Cheer varsity program this academic year, combining Cheerleading with STUNT.

The fastest-growing female sport in the country, STUNT focuses on the technical and athletic components of cheer. USA Cheer created the sport as an opportunity for colleges, universities and high schools to meet the Title IX requirements of a sport.

STUNT expands participation opportunities for the over 500,000 high school cheerleaders in the U.S. by providing an avenue for female athletes to use their cheerleading background in a new format. QU took advantage of the interest in cheerleading to build their STUNT & Cheer team. For the inaugural season, there will be 32 athletes competing on the team.

QU STUNT & Cheer athletes participate in traditional sideline cheerleading at football and basketball games. During home games, the team showcases the routines they are working on for competition which creates a more lively game day atmosphere.

STUNT competitions are held from early February through early April. QU’s STUNT & Cheer team will primarily compete in March after the home basketball season is over in a tournament format, playing multiple teams. QU will compete in 12-15 games in the first season with many of those being tournaments.

As a competitive team sport, STUNT is formatted into a four-quarter game. Teams go head to head performing compulsory routines. The team that executes the best gets the points for that round, with points based on precise technical scoring. The four quarters of play are partner stunts, pyramids and tosses, jumps and tumbling, and team routine which makes STUNT an exciting sport to play, watch and coach.

The STUNT & Cheer head coach is Diane Shoemaker who also serves as Assistant Director of Student Engagement. Diane was a high school cheerleader and cheered at the University of Missouri. She spent summers in college working as a Universal Cheerleaders Association Camp Instructor.

I’m looking forward to creating a balanced strength of schedule where we will be able to level up and see the wide variety of skill levels within this emerging sport.
Diane

Practice will be similar to other QU NCAA sports with daily afternoon practices and some early morning practices as they approach competition season. The athletes will participate in a rigorous strength training program as well as conditioning and drills at practice. The team will have 32 routines to memorize. Diane explains that the practice format will be a “combination of working through perfecting our sideline cheers and dances for game day plus building on skills to showcase new stunts and tosses at QU football and basketball home games.”

With the team roster filled, Diane is working on recruitment for next year. They will maintain a local focus while reaching out to experienced STUNT and cheer athletes as the program grows. Diane’s goals include recruiting stronger talent each year, specifically in tumbling. Diane adds, “I'm excited to extend my recruiting reach nationally as we develop this program and create a reputation as a power program in the sport.”

HAWKETTES REACH SIGNIFICANT MILESTONES

While STUNT & Cheer are initiating a new varsity sport for female athletes, QU’s Competitive Dance team, the Hawkettes, reached significant milestones in the spring of 2024 heading into their inaugural competitive dance season in the 2024-2025 school year.

Under the direction of head coach Brenna Phillips and assistant coach Hannah Pugh, the Hawkettes competed in jazz, hip-hop, and pom at the DTU College Classic Nationals in April of 2024 in Orlando, Florida.

The Hawkettes brought back three national titles. They placed 4th in the nation for D-2 Hip-Hop, 9th in the nation for D-2 Jazz, and 14th in the nation for D-2 Pom.

The competitions are judged by a panel of dance judges from all over the country. The judging is based on category breakdowns such as overall performance, technique, costumes, creativity, execution, and difficulty.

COMMITTED TO INTENSE TRAINING

I could not be more proud of the amazing women who make up the Quincy University Hawkettes Dance Team. Being the first dance team in our school's history to compete has been an amazing experience for us. Being our first time competing and bringing home not one, not two, but three national titles is a dream come true.”
Brenna Phillips, Dance Team Head Coach

The Hawkettes were committed to intense training and preparation of the three routines that brought them national titles. They have a full competitive season this year and look forward to building the program.

Entering her third year as competitive dance coach, Brenna is new to the recruiting process, but she’s assertive. She attends high school games to watch dance performances and contacts multiple studios around the Quincy area. The Hawkettes held a Dance Combine this year and invited studios/schools to come dance and perform with them. Brenna also attends many IDTA (Illinois Drill/Dance Team Association) competitions throughout the season.

It definitely takes a lot of commitment to be a part of the competitive dance program, but the coaches make it manageable for the dancers to balance time between school and dance. With five to six practices a week, they work on many dance techniques, learn routines for basketball and football performances, clean and perfect their competition routines, and participate in multiple team bonding activities to keep the Hawkettes working as a team.

This is just the start of what the future is going to hold for this program. I am eager to watch the team grow even more as a competitive program. We have high goals set for our competitive team this year and plan to achieve them!
Brenna Phillips, Dance Team Head Coach

GET TO KNOW BRENNA PHILLIPS

Brenna Phillips earned her Bachelors of Fine Arts in Dance from the University of Kansas in 2022.

In addition to being QU’s head dance team coach, she is also a dance instructor at Heinze Dance Academy.

Brenna started dance at the age of three at Jazz Etc. in Quincy. She moved to Heinze Dance Academy when she was six and performed with the Heinze Dance Troupe as a teenager.

She was on the Quincy Notre Dame cheerleading team and Pom team, winning two 1st place state titles during her time on the Pom squad.

AN ONGOING LEGACY OF EXCEPTIONAL LEADERSHIP

FEATURING LINDA MOORE ’81

Linda Moore ’81 has a Management degree from QU, a master’s degree in Sport Management from the United States Sports Academy, and a Doctor of Business Administration degree from the University of Phoenix. She uses her education and training to maintain a remarkable career devoted to servant leadership.

Linda’s a Quincy native who started her career in higher education as an admissions counselor and athletic

recruiter. She continued her career in college athletics as the Associate Commissioner for the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and later as the Assistant Athletic Director at St. Louis University. Linda managed or consulted several professional sport and Olympic projects including the St. Louis Steamers, St. Louis Cardinals, U.S. Cycling Federation, Demetrious Johnson Foundation, and the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games.

DO WHAT IS NECESSARY, THEN DO WHAT IS POSSIBLE. THEN SUDDENLY, YOU’LL BE DOING WHAT YOU ONCE THOUGHT WAS IMPOSSIBLE.

In 1996, Linda joined ESPN Productions Inc. where she led the X Games franchise. From participant services and management to event planning and original programming production, as Sr. Director of Business Operations & Planning, Linda led the financial, legal, and business aspects of the franchise until she retired in 2016 to come back to Quincy to spend time with her elderly parents.

Linda did not intend to go back to work, but when she was offered the opportunity to serve as the Quincy City Treasurer, she decided it was a good way to give back to her hometown.

While Linda’s career accomplishments are striking, she credits her time at QU for preparing her to pursue and excel in all her endeavors. Her experience with sports and with QU faculty and staff shaped her career direction. Linda’s work with Bob Kivisto, Frank Longo,

and Judy Gengenbacher (Yeast) was instrumental in teaching her the ropes of sports information. Frank got her involved in keeping stats at the Mart Heinen Basketball Tournament and assisting with media and stats for women’s basketball and men’s soccer.

Linda traveled with many of the teams, but she wanted more and so did other female student athletes. They petitioned the administration to start a women’s soccer program. Linda explains, they “shot us down the first time, but we kept asking.” Natalie Slater (Cornwell), Pam Callahan, Julie White (Regner) and Linda kept pushing until they got a “yes, but…” answer.

After the ladies secured a faculty sponsor, raised the money they needed, and got permission to play on the men’s field, the team became the Lady Hawks Soccer Club with Dr. Bill Postiglione as their faculty sponsor/coach.

Linda’s drive to be involved in sports continued during the summer. She worked as the Assistant General Manager for the Quincy Rivermen Baseball team and had the privilege of working with Coach Jim Finigan and top-notch players like Kirby Puckett who became a professional baseball player with the Minnesota Twins.

While Linda’s determination to be involved in athletics led to her leadership roles with the X Games and ESPN, she emphasizes that QU laid a great foundation for her career. “My biggest takeaway from QU is the need for developing and maintaining relationships. As Frank Longo taught me –find the need and fill it.”

Linda assessed situations and followed her instincts to get access to people who were gatekeepers of those in charge. Whether they were assistant coaches, administrative assistants, head coaches or VPs, Linda invested in and respected everyone.

IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO HAVE
ATTENDED QU WITHOUT GETTING MORE IN RETURN. WHETHER IT'S AN EDUCATION, A CAREER, FRIENDSHIPS, OR YOUR

SPOUSE – QU GAVE

YOU SOMETHING

GREATER THAN YOURSELF.

- LINDA MOORE ’81

This approach also stemmed from the Franciscan values instilled in Linda throughout her time at QU, which include reverence for the unique dignity of all people, servant leadership, inclusiveness, diversity, accountability and pursuit of knowledge. Linda says these values are the foundation of everything she’s done.

“While each of us is different, respecting the dignity of each person, from the

janitor to the CEO, is the basis for all relationships. Respect leads to trust, trust leads to collaboration, collaboration leads to creativity, creativity leads to problem solving.”

Service to others has been a foundation for Linda. As she explains, “No one succeeds alone. We all need others, and we all go through a time when we need a ‘hand up.’ If we can be that hand that lifts someone else, we’ll succeed together.”

SERVICE IS A FOUNDATION

“No one succeeds alone. We all need others, and we all go through a time when we need a ‘hand up.’ If we can be that hand that lifts someone else, we’ll succeed together.”

Lifting others up is also what stands out to Linda about the faculty and staff at QU who impacted her as a student and throughout her career. These QU leaders include Fr. Gabriel Brinkman, Paul Brown, Jim Mentesti, Pam Sherman, Jack and Sharon Mackenzie, Frank and Suzie Longo, John and Joanne Ortwerth, Brother Clete Van Ackeran, Fr. Joe Zimmerman, Fr. FJ, and Fr. JJ Lakers.

As Linda reflected on some defining moments in her career, working in the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta and leading the X Games franchise were definitive highlights, but she noted that graduating from the Betsy Magness Leadership Institute marked a pivotal turning point for her. This premier leadership development program for senior-level women across media, entertainment and technology focused on developing critical leadership competencies.

Linda was also selected for the Women’s Campaign School at Yale Law in 2013. This intensive leadership program was her first encounter inside the political world. “Working with 72 other women from around the world, regardless of party affiliation, was a great example of how government should work –people working together to find win-win solutions.” Linda says this program is what gave her the background to serve as Quincy’s treasurer for seven years.

While her work has led to many successes in business and sports media,

Linda’s philanthropic efforts top the list of her greatest achievements. From raising $1 million for the V Foundation for Cancer Research through the ESPY Celebrity Golf Classic to chairing the fundraising committee to build Legends Stadium at Quincy University, Linda believes in giving back.

“If others before us had not given their time, talent and treasure to QC or QU, we might not have had the opportunities we had. Now it’s our turn to pay it forward by helping the next generation by making contributions to QU.”

Linda adds, “People have helped me along the way. I just think we owe it to others to help them along their way. Our journeys are all interconnected. You never know whose path you might cross in the future so it’s always better to build pathways rather than burn bridges.”

In addition to many roles over the years, Linda served QU as a member of the Board of Trustees and has been chair of the Sports Hall of Fame Selection Committee for the past nine years.

FR. DARREN DENTINO

FR. DARREN DENTINO ‘89 is a priest at the Missionaries of Charity in Nairobi, Kenya, pursuing a doctorate degree, but his path to the priesthood was unconventional.

Fr. Darren had no idea at a young age that God was calling him to the ordained ministry. He earned his BA in history at QU in 1989 and was working as a full-time musician/drummer in a popular Illinois band at the time of his calling.

Fr. Darren had set his sites on becoming a drummer on a late-night TV show, but God had other plans, and the unexpected happened. Fr. Darren fell in love. Placing someone else as more important than himself and his personal plans turned his value-hierarchy upside down and, unbeknownst to Fr. Darren at the time, disposed him to hear Jesus’ call.

“My call took place in April 1992. Jesus confronted me with a choice: Listen and act on what he is showing me in the depths of my heart at that moment or pretend that I don’t hear/feel him and simply continue with life and my career trajectory as I had so stoutly determined.”

LIVING OUT THE WORDS OF MOTHER TERESA,

Fr. Darren accepted God’s calling to enter the priesthood. “Once I made this choice, the rest was simple – even if difficult.” He had no relationship with the Church at that time so he did not know where to turn. He sought out the pastor from his dad’s childhood parish, Fr. Ted Hochstatter who also had a Quincy connection as a 1972 QU alumnus who then served with the Missionaries of Charity (MC). LET ME PREACH YOU WITHOUT PREACHING, NOT BY WORDS BUT BY MY EXAMPLE.

"COME AND SEE"

Fr. Ted directed Fr. Darren to the Missionary of Charities Fathers, the priestly branch of Mother Teresa’s religious congregation who had their community in Tijuana, Mexico. Fr. Darren planned his trip to Tijuana to experience the MC way of life, what the MC’s call a “Come and See” experience. “My Come and See ended on August 10, 1992, after which I came home, sold my car and my drums, cleared all my debts, and returned to Tijuana twelve days later. I had found my home.”

Fr. Darren was ordained in Nairobi in 2004 and has served in three countries – Mexico, Italy, and Kenya – for about ten years each. He has returned to Nairobi and is a Novice master of their Institute, a one-year program of intensive preparation for profession of the vows.

Fr. Darren’s greatest task as Novice master is to teach the men how to pray, since “it is only in prayer that one finds the strength needed to serve the poor both joyfully and perseveringly.”

Fr. Darren adds, “It is this solitude of heart –belonging exclusively to God – which makes the priest both the richest of men as well as poorer than the poor whom he has the privilege of serving.”

One of the greatest gifts God has given Fr. Darren has been the immersion into other cultures which has enriched how he lives and transmits the Catholic faith. His Midwestern roots have been transplanted to exotic soils, and he has learned that the deepest desires of the human heart are indeed common to all peoples: the desire to be seen, to be appreciated, to love and to be loved.

FR. DARREN SEEKS TO LIVE the Franciscan heritage by doing good to others in a pre-emptive way and to exercise uncritical goodwill toward strangers. He has leaned on the words of St. Francis of Assisi to “make me an instrument of your peace,” to defend those in harm’s way and to be protected from those who would do harm.

Fr. Darren has a wide range of people he considers mentors in his life. In his formative years, the most influential figure was Neil Peart, the drummer of the rock band Rush. After his conversion, Fr. Darren embraced the teachings and service of Mother Teresa and her patroness Thérèse of Lisieux. He’s grateful for the mentorship of his parents and for the support and encouragement of his cousin Bill Crowley who was involved in fundraising for QU at the time Fr. Darren was a student.

In his free time, Fr. Darren loves playing guitar and recording music. He enjoys sports and exercises regularly. He considers himself a theological junkie and loves reading books about religion, philosophy, politics and social psychology.

Fr. Darren was on the QU football team throughout his college career, a time filled with friendship, fond memories, and brotherhood, and he still maintains contact with some of his “old football buddies.”

At QU, entrepreneurship programs help a student think about creating a job, not just finding a job.

Quincy University’s Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation serves as a resource for faculty and students and provides experiential learning opportunities beyond the classroom. The Center also provides interdisciplinary programming and offers professional development, seminars, events, and courses for alumni and the local community.

The Director of Entrepreneurship, Roger Leenerts, is responsible for the operation of the Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation and for developing the ecosystem of entrepreneurship on campus, in the community and beyond. He plays an integral role in the development of student-led businesses and leads QU's Collegiate Entrepreneurs Organization (CEO).

“I am very excited to grow and lead entrepreneurship activities at Quincy University,” said Roger. “Entrepreneurs tend to be self-motivated, enthusiastic, and optimistic. This is a great opportunity for students, faculty, alumni, and even our local community to take ideas and transition them to successful businesses.”

The Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation is not about a physical space; it’s about a culture of entrepreneurship. This includes coaching and support for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the community. In the future, a physical space on campus will be selected and utilized as the Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation. This space will provide opportunities to enhance the CEO Club, offer additional entrepreneurial courses, and host ideation competitions.

“We are excited that Roger has agreed to serve as our founding Director of Entrepreneurship,” said Dr. Sarah Vordtriede-Patton, provost and vice president for academic affairs. “In this role, he will continue to teach courses in the Oakley School of Business and bring his vast experience and creativity to larger audiences of students in majors across the University, both inside and outside of the classroom.”

Roger earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Bradley University and a MBA from the Keller Graduate School of Management. He most recently served as the Facilitator of the Adams County CEO program. His previous work experience includes serving as the Director of Manufacturing for Quincy Compressor and as the President/Owner of H&B Quality Tooling and the Leenerts Group, LLC. Roger is involved in the community as a board member for Junior Achievement and the Quincy Rotary Club. He has also been active with Toastmasters and Boy Scouts and as an advisory board member for JWCC, QHS and QU. Additionally, Roger serves on the board of the Quincy Business and Technology Center.

“Roger is the perfect person at the right time to lead entrepreneurship efforts at QU,” said Tony Crane, Quincy Business and Technology Center Board Member and former QU trustee. “His vast business experience will help mold future entrepreneurs that will positively impact our region for generations to come.”

The Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation advances the University’s approach to focus on the resources that allow students to succeed. Entrepreneurial thinking is for all majors, not just those focusing on a business degree.

When new businesses are created, new jobs are often created. When students create something here in the Quincy community, there is a good chance they will stick around and call this ‘home’.
- ROGER LEENERTS | Director of Entrepreneurship

Quincy University student entrepreneur Emily Klinner started Klinner's Bakery on spring break of her sophomore year. She has a booth at the Quincy Town Center Farmers Market on Saturday mornings from June to October, and she fulfills many baking orders.

“I have always loved to bake. When I was younger, I would bake with my grandparents, and we would play “Klinner's Bakery”! I would tell my grandparents that when I got older I wanted to start a real Klinner's Bakery, and the spring break of my sophomore year I did.”

The Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation is made possible by a major gift from QU alumni Mike ’72 and Carole (Hughes) ’73 Hennessy.

“We have been supporting entrepreneurship and selfemployment education for quite some time,” said the Hennessys. “Some of the most impactful programs have been at smaller Liberal Arts schools like QU. We have been having very productive discussions with QU and are in the process of helping make strong connections to the entrepreneurial ecosystem. It’s very encouraging!”

During the developmental stage of the Center, Roger is identifying a core group of partners and consultants, assessing successful entrepreneurship programs, and creating an advisory committee.

To get her business going, Emily created a logo and obtained her food protection manager's license and cottage foods registration. Emily maintains a spreadsheet with all ingredients and costs. She runs her bakery social media pages and utilizes word of mouth for marketing.

Emily’s grateful to have started a small business while in college as this adds experience and networking to her career path while she completes her degree. Emily is a senior with double majors in Marketing and Management, and she is active in the CEO Club.

She has a strong connection to QU. Her mom is a QU alum, along with two aunts and an uncle. Emily’s 96-year-old great grandfather was the Class of 1949. Her great grandfather's brother was not only an alum, but also a professor, and as a student at Quincy College, he was part of the civilian pilot training program.

DEGREES IN THE SCIENCES IN THE SCHOOL OF

SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

contributors: Joe Coelho, PhD, Lee Enger, PhD, Kimberly Hale, PhD, and Faten Shaeib, PhD

“The whole of science is nothing more than a refinement of everyday thinking.”
- Albert Einstein

QU’s Departments of Biology/Biological Sciences and Chemistry provide basic concepts in scientific knowledge and method, build critical thinking and logic skills, develop scientific writing skills, and offer experiential learning opportunities in labs and undergraduate research.

“With the support of the liberal arts, we prepare students with a strong foundation in the sciences and math for graduate school, professional school, or the career force.” said Lee Enger, Dean of the School of Science & Technology.

QU students are exposed to broad concepts in the first-year courses, build on those concepts in upper-level courses, and have opportunities to examine some topics in great depth. The curriculum offers both theoretical knowledge and practical laboratory work.

Joe Coelho, Professor of Biology, adds that the department’s approach to science education has increasingly focused on undergraduate research. “This experience provides our students with excellent preparation for graduate and professional school.”

“We always offer our students the opportunity to engage in hands-on research projects under our faculty supervision, which supports the students pursuing careers in academics and research,” said Faten Shaeib, Assistant Professor of Biology.

Considering what makes QU’s approach distinct in training and preparing students for careers in these fields, Lee Enger explains that since QU course sizes are comparatively small to other institutions, students are given easy access to their professors to develop skills they will use in future academics and careers.

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING A SIGNIFICANT GIFT

A SUCCESSFUL PROGRAM

Students also have access to experiential learning supported through the QUEST Center, Quincy University Experiential Study Center, and QUEST Cash, a program where students apply for funds to offset the costs associated with experiential learning activities that complement academics and service learning.

“Having access to the support of the QUEST Center and QUEST Cash, whether academically in research and study abroad programs or through community service, invigorates students and instills a life-long interest in pursuing meaningful experiences that continue to feed the inquiring mind,” said Enger.

Biology and Chemistry professors noted several stand-out moments for the science degree program. Due to a significant gift in 2012, the Center for Science at North Campus was revitalized. This included the renovation of the science labs and the creation of new learning and study spaces for students, updated HVAC, and new lighting and classroom seating.

With the Department of Education Title III grant, state-of-theart research equipment was provided, including instruments that are necessary for undergraduate research in the sciences, which also gives students access to equipment that they may encounter in future academic and career pursuits.

The Academic Symposium has been a strong addition to the sciences. It gives students motivation to focus on their research studies and gives them practice in organizing and presenting their results. “This experience simulates life as a working scientist,” said Coelho.

“QU’s foundation in the liberal arts is a key to students being successful. A broad exposure to many disciplines helps develop the whole intellect of a student. It brings the humanities to

the sciences and the sciences to the humanities.”

90% PLACEMENT RATES

To put the growth of the science degree programs into perspective, twenty years ago, there were two full-time biology faculty and one adjunct. Now there are six full-time faculty. The student enrollment in biology has approximately doubled.

The quality of education and undergraduate research, coupled with experiential learning and faculty access and investment in students, provides the foundation for a successful program. According to Kimberly Hale, Assistant VP for Academic Affairs and professor of Biological Sciences, placement rates of QU students who are successful in the programs are over 90%.

Many alumni have continued their education beyond their bachelor’s degree, and others have entered directly into careers across the spectrum. Alumni pursue postgraduate degrees and certifications in a variety of biological and chemistry fields to advance their careers and to teach in primary or secondary education and at the collegiate level.

Beginning Fall 2024, QU launches the Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering major degree programs as part of the School of Science & Technology. The programs will prepare students to become engineers in such fields as automation, autonomous systems, computer assisted design, electronics testing and manufacturing, and artificial intelligence. In the near future, QU will begin offering doctoral degree programs in the health sciences.

QU chemistry professor Scott Luaders says teaching chemistry is still his dream job.

“Each class of students coming in is a new experience, and I still love it.”

Q&A: Scott Luaders

What led you to serve in this role at QU?

Scott has been at Quincy University since 1994, serving as a chemistry professor for 30 years. He teaches General Chemistry and a variety of upper level chemistry courses, and he advises chemistry and pre-professional students (pre-medical, pre-dental, pre-optometry, etc.) on their academic schedules and on plans to achieve their goals.

Initially, I thought I would be a football coach and math teacher, but after taking chemistry with Dr. John Brodmann at Culver-Stockton College, I knew I wanted to be a chemistry professor at a small university. QU was my first choice of job opportunities due to its location in proximity to my family in St. Louis, the university’s Catholic Franciscan heritage, and the job itself.

What are some of the most rewarding moments in your work with students?

Many of my former students have gotten their ideal careers after starting here at QU. I have taught students who are now doctors, optometrists, chiropractors, professors, dentists, teachers, industrial chemists, nurses, and researchers. I find it very rewarding to help students achieve their goals.

What are some principles you want to instill in students?

I love our mission statement that talks about treating everyone with kindness and respect. That is one of the most important things I want for my own kids as well as for our students. I also want them to have a lifelong love for learning and love of life. I realize that students are going through a lot of different things so I am motivated to always be kind to them. I have been looking out for the well-being of students since I got this job. There are things that are much more important than chemistry and grades. I have also found that building a relationship with students makes them better students.

What life lessons shaped your values in how you interact with your students?

I think it was tutoring in graduate school that helped me learn how to interact with students. I had so much fun helping kids learn chemistry, and I was the most popular tutor back then. I learned how to understand how students think and how to get through to them. Those experiences translated to teaching as the professor.

Who has been the most important person in your life?

Well there have been many different important people in my life, but the most important is my wife, Rochelle.

What is one of the most defining moments in your life?

There are many important moments in my life, like going to college, meeting my wife, having all of our kids and all of the moments associated with our family. But I'm going to go with meeting Dr. Brodmann at CSC because he really affected the trajectory of my life.

How has your work and research influenced your career and your faith?

My work in chemistry is my career. I could have gone into research or something else with my degree, but I wanted to teach, so being a professor at QU was the perfect match for me. My interests are in chemistry education. I enjoy doing demonstrations for my own students as well as younger students, which makes them interested in science. My faith is being lived every day in my work and my family. I hope to be a good example for my students.

What are your hopes for the Science department?

I always hope to have more students interested in majoring in science and willing to work hard to achieve their goals. The world needs scientists of all types.

Share some success stories from alumni in your department.

There are too many to list. Pretty much every student who graduates with a chemistry degree from QU gets a job that they want. I love when students keep in touch with me to let me know what they are doing.

Mary Nell (Frier) Meyer, 81, of Quincy, Illinois died on Thursday, April 4, 2024. She was born in Hannibal, Missouri on August 16, 1942, the daughter of William and Gertrude Zimmerman Frier.

Mary Nell earned a history degree from Quincy College in 1963. While at QC, she met the "love of her life," George Meyer, also a QC student. Mary Nell and George were married one week before they began their teaching careers at Quincy Junior High School.

After four years of teaching, Mary Nell decided to be a stay-athome mom following the arrival of their first-born son, Timothy Michael. In 1971 Edward (Ted) William was born, followed by Susan Elizabeth in 1977.

Mary Nell returned to teaching by working as the coordinator with the homebound students at Blessing and St. Mary Hospitals for fourteen years. She was an outstanding teacher who was highly respected by her students. She built strong relationships with her students from all walks of life, and many of them came back to visit with her after they became adults.

volunteer teacher in the religious education classes. For years, Mary Nell and George delivered meals for the Meals on Wheels program and firmly believed in the mission of helping those in need.

Mary Nell was a friend to everyone she met and never missed an opportunity to help others.

She gave her time, talents, and treasures to her family and her community. Despite the progression of Alzheimer's, up until her last days, she maintained her social graces and was quick with a compliment and a smile for all she encountered.

Mary Nell and George received the Alumni of the Year Award in 2018 and were awarded Honorary Degrees of Doctor of Humane Letters in 2023.

June 2023—May 2024

Iam privileged to thank you again this year for the generosity you have shown to Quincy University. As you may know, QU received record-breaking levels of support from alumni across the nation, which allows us to continue to serve our students in a way very few institutions of higher learning are able to do.

Thanks to you, our total funds raised for the last fiscal year were $8,251,937. This represents the third largest one-year amount raised in the history of the university and includes endowment and restricted funds.

A special thanks to QU Fund Chairs Chuck Davis ’02 and Bill Davis ’04 from Springfield, Illinois. They generously invested in this year’s annual drive, including hosting an alumni event at their office, making personal fundraising calls, helping author appeal letters, and providing valuable advice and counsel for this year’s fund.

The Davises' support and leadership was instrumental in raising $1,436,505 for the QU Fund, exceeding its goal by 3%. This marks the 14th year in a row that the annual fund has topped $1M. The QU Fund is comprised of unrestricted giving and gifts for academic departments, student clubs and organizations, and the athletic department.

Additionally, our number of donors investing in QU was the highest in the past 14 years.

My wife and I are honored to be members of the Quincy University community and have been privileged to meet many of you. Thanks again for all you do for QU and our students and for making this truly a record-breaking year.

It is, indeed, a great day to be a Hawk!

Quincy University’s National Alumni Board invites you to nominate a fellow alum who has achieved professional accomplishments and service to their communities and/or to the university.

Nominations for all awards are solicited annually from faculty, staff , alumni, and friends of the university, specifically in the fall of each year. However, we accept award nominations throughout the year. We encourage nominations to be kept confidential. Submitted nominees are reviewed by Alumni Services and the final selection is made by a committee of the NAB.

The nomination deadline for the 2025 awards is October 31, 2024. Submissions after October 31 will be considered for the following year. Self-nominations will not be accepted.

The winners will be announced in the spring and highlighted in the spring edition of QUniverse. Awards will be presented at the 2025 Homecoming Dinner.

“Your generosity allows me to break through my financial limitations and really focus on what’s important to me. I am so grateful for kind people like you and hope that I will be able to positively impact someone like you have me.”

Alanna Edgecomb’s love for music began in elementary music classes and grew with the opportunity to join band in the sixth grade and to compete with advanced bands in high school.

Her skill level and passion for music has evolved into Alanna being a performer who genuinely loves sharing her music with others, but she was convinced that she would not be able to form a career around music.

“These scholarships allow me to focus less on ‘how’ I’m going to build a career and more on the ‘why’.”

After earning her degree at QU, Alanna says she wants to go to graduate school and earn a doctorate in performing arts, but she would love to join a band first and is considering auditioning for a military band.

“Having received these scholarships, I am now capable of studying music and making it my life.”

Alanna Edgecomb is the recipient of the Thomas P. Daly Scholarship and the Gary K. & Sue Ann Winking Scholarship.

“To me, QU was like a small, TIGHT-KNIT FAMILY. I gained relationships there that still endure.”

Dr. Stephen Liesen ’84 values the STRONG ACADEMICS of QU and the Franciscan values woven throughout the entire QU experience. He credits QU’s pre-medical science program for providing the education he needed to advance through dental school. Stephen has maintained a rewarding dental practice in the small town of Barry, IL for 36 years.

Stephen says it was the work ethic and determination engrained in the course work that solidified the FRANCISCAN WAY OF LIFE that is the foundation of QU and that was an instrumental part of his upbringing.

Both of Stephen’s parents graduated from Quincy College in 1957. Stephen and eight of his siblings attended QU. Both of the Liesen’s sons are QU alum – Weston a 2013 graduate and Clayton a 2014 graduate.

“QU has been the ‘CENTERPIECE’ of generations of our family tradition and development.” Stephen married his high school sweetheart and “Rock” in his life in the QU chapel. Life-long friend Fr. Jim Wheeler, OFM ‘62, married them. Stephen’s great, great grandfather, Henry Brinks, built part of the QU chapel.

Stephen doubted he could make it through his last two years of college financially. It was then that “God and QU awarded me the Bonaventure Academics Scholarship. This taught me to PAY FORWARD for what I was freely given.” Since earning his dental degree, Stephen has donated to the annual QU Fund Drive, and he provides free dental work to a local health department and works with Alcoholics Anonymous.

Among those ENDURING RELATIONSHIPS built at QU, Stephen mentions Fr. Aaron, Dr. Jon Natalini, Dr. George Schneider, Dr. Al Pogge, and Fr. Jim Wheeler as instructors/mentors who influenced his life.
