First hike

Just about five miles outside of Quincy, you will find the Quincy Lakes area hosted by Washington State Fish and Wildlife.

At the entry to Burke Lake, there is a Boat launch and trails on either side of the lake. In Burke Lake, you will find rainbow trout. The opening day for fishing there is March 1.

Evergreen reservoir contains bluegill, bass, crappie and other fish. If neither spot fits your fancy, other lakes in the area are Stan Coffin, Quincy Lake, H Lake and Dusty Lake.

Quincy Lake has rainbow trout. Stan Coffin has bass and blue gill. If you are up to a hike, you need to travel down to Dusty Lake. This hike is steep and a little challenging for some, plus, rattlesnakes have been spotted in the area. Dusty Lake has rainbow trout and has German Brown trout.

Martha Lake, just north of George, is good early during the summer. The lake is a little shallow and there definitely are some big fish there. Make sure to use bait like worms or crayfish. The fish on Martha Lake don’t seem to bite much on store-bought bait. This is what WDFW says about Martha Lake on their website. “Martha Lake is located just north of George. This lake is one of Region 2’s most popular March 1st Opener lakes. Anglers fishing Martha Lake experience excellent fishing during tasting. It is best to make Martha Lake an early season fishing stop rather that late in the season. Upper Caliche Lake is just south of George. Upper Caliche Lake contains rainbow trout, and the lake offers access to boat and shore fishing..

the first month of the season. After the opener fishing is good to fair. Both boat and shoreline fishing are very effective at Martha Lake”. It is true fishing is not great after May or early June at Martha. The water level goes down and the fish can be a bit muddy

Bridge, from p. 30 Wanapum Tribe, welcomed the crowd and gave a land acknowledgement for the new bridge. The Wanapum have been the caretakers of the land and have inhabited the area for thousands of years. The first to speak was Johnny Buck.

“I want to acknowledge the land itself and also the river,” Johnny said. “These are important natural landscapes that we have. The resources that these provide are also very important to us. This land and this river take care of a lot of things that are important to us. I also want to acknowledge our ancestors who were the original caretakers of these lands and these waterways for thousands of years,”

Johnny Buck’s speech was followed by Clayton Buck’s. Clayton is

the coach for the Wahluke High School varsity basketball team in Mattawa. Bridge, from page 33 the occasion.

“Remember, as you cross that bridge and you go down those trails that you are on Indian land,” said Lela. “The Wanapum of Priest Rapids gathered and occupied the land up and down this river.”

Former Secretary of State, Ralph Munro (who served between 1980-2001) spoke on the history of the Beverly Bridge.

“This is an important segment,” Monroe added. “The idea is a trail to the Pacific Ocean, an Idaho line to the Pacific cross-state trail.”

State Sen. Judy Warnick said, “Today is is an excellent day for opening the bridge, opening the trail to Eastern Washington and Western Washington.”

The development of two historic railroad trestles these past two years have made it possible to cross from Kittitas County into Grant County from Ellensburg across the Columbia River to Beverly on bike, foot or horse and wagon. Motorized vehicles are not allowed on the new crossing bridges.

The main entry to the bridge is located on the Kittitas side: from I-90 Take the Huntzinger Road south past the Wanapum Dam. Continue as you pass the Wanapum State Park and just about a few miles down there is a road to the left just before the bridge. It is not a paved road. Continue until you come to a large open gravel area before the bridge. You
