Al centro della fabbrica intelligente

Macerie ovunque, interi paesi rasi al suolo, gente disperata, sguardi persi. No, non è lo scenario di guerra che ci arriva da qualche zona remota del mondo, a cui siamo tristemente abituati. È la forza devastante del terremoto che ha colpito, e continua a farlo, il nostro Centro Italia. Una faglia che si è estesa per cinquanta chilometri, una ferita su quelle terre che non si potrà più rimarginare. L’Italia è scossa, fisicamente e mentalmente; schiaffeggiata dalla mano della natura che a volte sa essere molto dura nella sua inarrestabile forza. Eppure il nostro paese risulta essere nelle prime posizioni per quanto riguarda l’utilizzo di tecnologie antisismiche nelle nuove costruzioni. Cosa succede allora? Alessandro Martelli, Presidente del Glis (Isolamento sismico e altre strategie di progettazione antisismica), ha dichiarato che “Oltre il 70% dell’edificato italiano attuale non è in grado di resistere ai terremoti che potrebbero colpirlo”. Il problema pertanto è la sicurezza delle costruzioni più datate, e di un immenso patrimonio storico e culturale famoso in tutto il mondo, fatto di chiese, monumenti, palazzi storici, emblema di un passato grandioso che ha visto protagonisti i più grandi artisti e ingegneri di tutti i tempi. Il tema della sicurezza degli ambienti in cui viviamo e lavoriamo, più volte trattato dal nostro giornale e a cui le nostre imprese pongono molta attenzione, ritorna così alla ribalta in un frangente – purtroppo non l’unico negli ultimi anni - tanto eclatante quanto drammatico. Dalle pagine de L’Ammonitore abbiamo rivolto molti inviti al settore manifatturiero italiano a investire in tecnologie produttive innovative per continuare a essere competitivo, e questa volta ci sentiamo di invitare tutti a investire sulla propria sicurezza, lo Stato a salvaguardare la vita dei cittadini intervenendo significativamente sulle strutture pubbliche e sul nostro prezioso patrimonio artistico, perché il futuro non si prevede, men che meno un terremoto, ma si prepara.

Via libera alla finanza innovativa, quali risposte alla stretta del credito?

Macerie ovunque, interi paesi rasi al suolo, gente disperata, sguardi persi. No, non è lo scenario di guerra che ci arriva da qualche zona remota del mondo, a cui siamo tristemente abituati. È la forza devastante del terremoto che ha colpito, e continua a farlo, il nostro Centro Italia. Una faglia che si è estesa per cinquanta chilometri, una ferita su quelle terre che non si potrà più rimarginare. L’Italia è scossa, fisicamente e mentalmente; schiaffeggiata dalla mano della natura che a volte sa essere molto dura nella sua inarrestabile forza. Eppure il nostro paese risulta essere nelle prime posizioni per quanto riguarda l’utilizzo di tecnologie antisismiche nelle nuove costruzioni. Cosa succede allora? Alessandro Martelli, Presidente del Glis (Isolamento sismico e altre strategie di progettazione antisismica), ha dichiarato che “Oltre il 70% dell’edificato italiano attuale non è in grado di resistere ai terremoti che potrebbero colpirlo”. gni campo dell’architettura e dell’ingegneria nel senso più ampio del termine ha fatto progressi, ha modificato modalità, metodologie, tecnologie, mezzi e strumenti, fatto ricerche e scoperte. Le idee sono progredite, sono mutate, si sono evolute; si sono adeguate alla società o hanno modificato modi e stili di vita. Nessuno si è mai posto il problema se fosse giusto o sbagliato; la cultura del “fare” ha privilegiato la sperimentazione e ha insegnato che dagli errori si può imparare, crescere, progredire e migliorare. Non è mai stato chiesto ai professionisti se fossero d’accordo con un “SI” o con un “NO”. È stato dato semplicemente per scontato che il cambiamento fosse insito nella natura dell’uomo e nel nostro caso dei professionisti, nella loro ricerca di miglioramento e progresso per il bene comune. Ci sono stati “si” e “no” dettati da successi e insuccessi; il buon senso e la competenza hanno sempre fatto da guida nelle scelte e quindi nell’evolversi delle professioni. Per la politica evidentemente è diverso; ma ciò dimostra solo uno scollamento fra i problemi pratici della quotidianità dell’individuo e l’incapacità della politica ad adeguarsi. Il buon senso non fa da guida; un referendum che fa contento/scontento la metà dei cittadini resta un problema non risolto. Il cambiamento è necessario e la civiltà parla da sola a tal proposito; ma il cambiamento dovrebbe godere della fiducia e della certezza di tutti i cittadini quando si parla di politica. Se tutti quanti noi quando attraversiamo un ponte o saliamo sulla cima di un grattacielo diamo per scontato di poterci fidare di chi ha pensato il progetto, forse non vuol dire che i professionisti potrebbero insegnare e dire il loro pensiero con più forza alla politica? n

The European Cleaning Industry trend report

T

he cleaning industry experienced an impressive growth over the last 20 years. The industry’s turnover tripled to 107 billion Euro and employment increased by 80%, currently employing over 3.9 million people. These numbers are even more impressive when compared to the overall market, the European GDP doubled and employment grew by 20% in the same period. This excellent performance is caused by the fact that cleaning industries tend to diversify their activities and, moreover, they also include facility services. This report has been developed by hkp/// RemuNet in cooperation with EFCI and incorporates statistical improvements as compared to the annual survey reports. The results are derived from data provided by the EFCI member associations together with 10

impacted the industry although the effects were limited: 2009 was still 0.7% higher compared to 2008. Despite the remarkable growth in some countries (e.g. Poland turnover increased tenfold), the top 5 countries of 1995 remain unchanged and account for 69% of the European industry’s turnover in 2016, compared to 71% two decades earlier. Of these countries, Spain and the United Kingdom showed the strongest growth.

El número de empresas de limpieza se ha más que duplicado en los últimos 20 años, superando las 277 mil empresas en 2016, lo que corresponde a un aumento medio de 8 mil empresas por año en Europa. La facturación del sector se ha triplicado hasta los 107 mil millones de euros y el empleo se ha incrementado en un 80 %, de tal manera que actualmente se superan los 3,9 millones de personas empleadas. Estas cifras son aún más impresionantes que en el mercado general, el PIB europeo se ha duplicado y el empleo ha crecido un 20 % durante el mismo período. Este excelente desempeño se debe al hecho de que las industrias de limpieza tienden a diversificar sus actividades y también incluyen servicios de instalaciones. La penetración en el mercado global ha aumentado, pasando del 61 % en 2003 al 66 % en 2016. Con la excepción de Portugal e Italia, las tasas de penetración del mercado nacional alcanzaron niveles más altos para todos los países en 2016 en comparación con 2003. Este informe fue desarrollado por hkp /// RemuNet en colaboración con EFCI e incorpora mejoras estadísticas en los informes de las encuestas anuales. A higher diversity of market segments is observed in 2016 as compared to 1999 due to the incorporation of new activities, such as Shops & Commercial sites. Other cleaning services, for instance Schools & Leisure and Service for Individuals, expanded their activities whereas Services in Offices reduced their share in the market from 52.7% to 45% in this period. MARKET PENETRATION

Market penetration is defined as the share of global cleaning services that are contracted out to specialized cleaning companies with the remaining difference being performed by internal services. In order to observe the development of the industry in different countries, it is essential for the cleaning industry to analyze market penetration. Market penetration data submitted by the EFCI members is estimated based on sales statistics provided by manufacturers of cleaning products and machinery. In the infographics depicted below, the global market penetration of the cleaning industry increased from 61% in 2003 to 66% in 2016. Except for Portugal and Italy, national market penetration rates reached higher levels for all countries in 2016 as compared to 2003. France observed the most significant increase in market penetration, climbing from 60% to 80% and positioning the country at the highest market penetration percentage in Europe. The outsourcing of services also increased considerably in the United Kingdom, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. The first quartile of the European market penetration ranking remained similar over the period, with the exception of France pushing Spain out of the top 5 after climbing 5 places. The United Kingdom also reported a spectacular progression from the 15th to the 7th position. Belgium

and Poland lost their place in the second and third quartiles at the expense of Denmark and Norway. COMPANIES

The number of cleaning companies more than doubled over the last 20 years, exceeding 277 thousand companies in 2016, corresponding to an average increase of 8 thousand companies per year in Europe. Despite the decrease observed in 2009, following the global crisis, and in 2015 due to a significant decrease of selfemployment in France, the number of companies in the cleaning industry increased with annual rates higher than 3% over the last 10 years. The number of companies increased significantly between 1995 and 2016, especially in France, Germany and Spain, leading the share of Italian cleaning companies in the European market to almost halve over the period. EMPLOYEES

The cleaning industry employs close to 4 million people - at more than 3.9 million in 2016. This is a considerable increase over the 2.16 million employed in 1995, and corresponds to an average addition of 87 thousand employees per year in Europe. The number of employees in the cleaning industry increased with annual rates higher than 2.7% before the crisis. In 2009, 2012 and 2015, employment stagnated due to the economic situation in various countries. Employment increased in the top 5 countries between 1995 and 2016. However, the development of the cleaning industry in smaller countries moderately reduced the share of the top 5 countries in the European market. TURNOVER PER COMPANY

The turnover per company provides an indication of the concentration in the cleaning industry. In spite of increasing overall between 1995 and 2016, it remains below 2007 levels, depi12

sand. Companies with more than 10 employees had moderate increases over the last 20 years. Self-employed people were excluded from this analysis. Due to the general increase in the sizes of all companies, the distribution of companies per number of employees remained constant in the market for the last 20 years. Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) represented 98% of the market when excluding the self-employed. If self-employed are included, SMEs represent 52% of the market. Among SMEs, almost 3 in 4 companies had less than 10 employees, whereas 1 in 4 companies had between 10 and 249 employees. cting a less concentrated industry. Before the 2008 crisis, the turnover per company sustained annual increases with rates up to 6.4%. Small countries such as Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg and Switzerland concentrate their cleaning industry turnover amongst fewer companies - in contrast to larger countries such as Germany and France which have a more competitive sector. TURNOVER PER EMPLOYEE

The average turnover per employee was 27.4 thousand Euro in 2016, corresponding to a productivity almost twice that of 1995. This evolution is primarily due to the faster increase in turnover than employment. Employee productivity significantly accelerated between 1998 and 2002, with annual growth rates up to 6.7%. However, since 2003 the realized turnover per employee comprised periods of growth and slowdown, except for 2006, 2008, and 2013 which saw slight contractions. In Europe, productivity increased by 69% between 1995 and 2016. The surge was particularly significant in Norway and the United Kingdom, whereas turnover per employee in Greece dramatically decreased from 112 thousand to 14 thousand Euro. The growth of the number of companies in the European market has been driven by the significant increase in companies between 2 and 9 employees. In 1995, there were 43 thousand companies with less than 10 employees across Europe, whereas in 2016 there were more than 93 thou14

trast, companies below 50 employees observed a somewhat smaller increase in turnover. Self-employed people were excluded from this analysis. The companies with more than 250 employees represented almost half of the total turnover of the cleaning industry, whereas the other half was produced by SMEs. Among them, those between 50 and 249 employees accounted for 20% of the total turnover. The turnover generated by companies between 2 and 9 employees decreased from 16% to 13% of the cleaning industry total turnover. The distribution remained constant over the last 20 years. EMPLOYEES OF COMPANIES PER WORKFORCE SIZE

The number of employees doubled in small companies, between 2 and 49 employees, over the last 20 years, whereas companies with more than 50 employees increased their workforce by more than 60%. Companies over 250 employees employed more than 2 million people across the countries covered by this report. Companies with more than 250 employees represented 55% of the total number of employees in the cleaning industry. Another 21% of the employees worked in midsize companies - between 50 and 249 employees. The rest of the employees worked in small companies. Companies between 10 and 19 employees represented 6% of the total workforce. The distribution of employees of companies per workforce size remained stable over the last 20 years.

The emergence of big companies in smaller countries slightly reduced the weight of the top 5 countries in the industry. The number of employees working in cleaning companies over 250 employees steadily increased from 1.19 million in 1995 to 2.02 million in 2016, corresponding to an average growth rate of more than 3%. Employment growth in large companies is sometimes interrupted with short periods of stagnation or recession. Annual growth rates of employees in large companies were somewhat lower after 2008. The number of employees in big companies increased across all countries over the last 20 years, with the exception of the Czech Republic and the United Kingdom. The shares of France, Italy and Spain significantly increased.

COMPANIES WITH MORE THAN 250 EMPLOYEES

The number of cleaning companies with more than 250 employees reached 1.97 thousand in 2016, showing a good recovery of the cleaning industry after a moderate downturn due to the global economic crisis in 2008. As demonstrated in the below chart, the annual growth rate of companies with more than 250 employees was negative between 2009 and 2012, suggesting that large companies were adversely affected by the economic context in Europe. The number of large companies increased in most of the European countries over the last 20 years. However, France, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom were noticeable exceptions. The total turnover of cleaning companies with more than 250 employees increased from 16.2 billion Euro in 1995 to 48.9 billion Euro in 2016, corresponding to an average growth of 1.6 billion Euro per year. The turnover of large companies reported significant growth rates during the first decade of this review, up to 12.9% in 2000. Since 2008, annual growth rates in turnover 16

NUMBER OF SELF-EMPLOYED

The number of self-employed contractors almost tripled between 1995 and 2016, from 53.8 thousand to 145.4 thousand. Self employment surged after the global crisis, suggesting that many people viewed it as a solution against unemployment. The annual growth rates of self-employment range from 0.5% up to 12.3%, over the last 20 years, showing the volatility of this segment, regardless of the economic context. Self-employment decreased in 1996, 2009 and 2015. The number of self-employed increased significantly over the last 20 years, especially in France, the Netherlands, Poland and Spain. As in 1995, Germany and the United Kingdom only accounted for a small share of self-employment in 2016. TURNOVER OF SELF-EMPLOYED

5.2 billion Euro in 2016, corresponding to a five-fold increase compared to the realized turnover of 1.8 billion Euro in 1995. The annual growth rates of self-employment turnover range from 1.3% up to 20%, over the last 20 years. The high volatility of this segment is represented by the successive 20% increase and 10.1% decrease between 2008 and 2009. Self-employment turnover increased significantly over the past 20 years, especially in France, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland and Spain. In contrast, it dramatically dropped in Greece from 513 million to 29 million Euro. WAGES AND SALARIES

Wages in the cleaning industry moderately increased between 2002 and 2016, reaching 12.2 thousand Euro per year. The turnover per employee in the cleaning industry increased 30% over this period, whereas salaries increased by 20%. Wages in the cleaning industry had two periods of increase. Between 2004 and 2007, salaries increased with a rate up to 3.4%, and between 2010 and 2015 the rates reached higher levels up to 5.4%. Salaries in the cleaning industry increased across almost all countries, with a few exceptions such as Croatia, Greece and Malta. The evolution of wages is comparable to other European industries, where the same periods of growth can be identified. PART-TIMERS

The ratio of part-timers in the cleaning industry decreased between 1995 and 2016, from 74% to 68%. Since 1996, the downward trend in employment of part-time employees

was momentarily interrupted in 1998 and between 2003 and 2006. The number of part-timers in the cleaning industry fluctuated during the early 2000s, with annual growth rates up to 2.2% and declines down to -3.5%. After 2007, part-time employment somewhat progressively declined until 2015. Part-time employment in European industries increased considerably over the last 20 years from 17% to 22%. The percentage of part-time workers in the cleaning industry compared already outstandingly high, with almost 7 out of 10 staff working part-time in 2016. WORKING PERIODS

Cleaning services were predominantly performed outside the premises’ usual periods of occupation. This is particularly true for office cleaning, but it also applies to commercial premises or buildings with public access. The below graph shows that Europe had a moderate shift in working periods between 1998 and 2016; early morning and evening remain, however, the classic working shifts. There are some noticeable exceptions such as Finland, where daytime cleaning represents 75% of the working periods. In contrast, 18

night time cleaning increased in Spain from 13% to 25% of the working shifts. DURATION OF WORK

Between 1998 and 2016, the average duration of work per week remained relatively low in the European cleaning industry, only increasing from 22 hours to 23 hours. At national level, different results can be observed for the same period. On one hand, the number of weekly hours considerably increased in: Finland 23 to 30; Italy 20 to 30; Spain 20 to 28 and Sweden 24 to 28 hours. On the other hand, the duration of work moderately decreased in: Belgium 21 to 19; Germany 20 to 15 and the United Kingdom 17 to 13 hours. Finally, Portugal faced a severe drop in weekly working hours, from 35 to 20. WORKFORCE STRUCTURE

The distribution of employees per category varies greatly among countries. In most cases, the workforce structure results from complex classification systems defined by collective agreements. For simplification purposes, this study focuses on four categories: blue-collars, technical staff, administrative employees and executives.The majority of the workforce is by far, constituted by blue-collar cleaners operating at clients’ premises. The average percentage of this segment in Europe increased from 88% in 1998 to 90% in 2016. In the same period, there was a reduction of technical, administrative and executive ratios across most countries. GENDER

Female employment in the cleaning industry decreased from 75% in 1995 to 71% in 2016, demonstrating progressive incorporation of male employees into the workforce, despite the short upward trend between 2003 and 2008. After the significant downturn in the ratio of women in the cleaning industry between 1995 and 2003, female employment stabilized at 72% with very small fluctuations. This ratio decreased for all countries during the last decade. In contrast, the ratio of women employed in other industries increased from 41% to 46% over the last 20 years, which is explained by the continuous expansion of female employment and their access to position traditionally reserved to males. DIVERSITY

The high proportion of employees from migrant workers is a singular characteristic of the cleaning industry. The graph below depicts an estimated ratio of these employees over the industry’s entire workforce. These numbers must be cautiously interpreted insofar as, in most countries, it is either difficult or illegal to collect data related to ethnic origins, except for nationality information. The share of migrant workers in the European cleaning industry increased from 20% in 1998 to 30% in 2016. The surge in migrant employment is monumental in Luxembourg (from 14% to 96%), the Netherlands (from 15% to 49%) and Norway (from 10% to 60%). SEPTEMBER 2019 |

The figures of Pulire 2019 The international trade fair dedicated to professional cleaning, which reflects a constantly growing market with an eye on the environment, was held at Veronafiere from May 21 to 23

ulire 2019 recorded more than 17 thousand visitors from 111 countries and, with numbers up compared with the previous edition (+6%), is confirmed as an international reference event for operators in the machinery, technology, products and services sectors for professional cleaning. With great satisfaction, Toni D’Andrea, Managing Director of Afidamp Servizi, said: “We are very happy with the brilliant final outcome of this edition. A result that rewards the work of Afi-

damp carried out with care and attention over many months and above all rewards the trust of the exhibitors who invested in Pulire 2019. In fact, exhibitors increased from 300 in 2017 to 312: 71% Italian exhibitors and 29% foreign exhibitors. An important foreign presence that gives shape to this increasingly international edition, also thanks to the recent operation at associative level that led to ISSA becoming part of Afidamp�. Más de 17 mil personas procedentes de 111 países se registraron en Pulire 2019 que, con el aumento de sus cifras en comparación con la edición anterior (+ 6 %), se confirma como un evento de referencia internacional para operadores en los sectores de maquinaria, tecnología, productos y servicios para la limpieza profesional. Los expositores aumentaron de 300 en 2017 a 312, de los cuales el 71 % eran expositores italianos y el 29 % expositores extranjeros. Hubo una importante presencia extranjera en esta edición, cada vez más internacional, gracias además a la reciente operación a nivel asociativo que ha visto la definición de la entrada de ISSA en Afidamp. La nueva empresa, llamada ISSA Pulire Network, es 50 % propiedad de AfidampFAB y 50 % de ISSA. La internacionalidad y la innovación son los puntos fuertes de Pulire 2019. Entre las innovaciones en términos de productos, máquinas, soluciones de limpieza, etc., muchos apuntan a la facilidad de uso, ergonomía, atención al medio ambiente, control inteligente del consumo de agua, etc. También son interesantes las máquinas de limpieza de suelos con baterías de litio, el plástico de segunda vida, el sistema de control remoto para el consumo de productos, los robots, las soluciones de limpieza integradas, el Internet de las cosas, los carritos multifuncionales, el papel higiénico absorbeolores, las lavadoras de ozono, las máquinas barredoras que reconocen y siguen al usuario.El debut del “Premio al producto del año” quería recompensar los esfuerzos de las empresas por encontrar soluciones eficientes. Los valores en los que se basa la adjudicación del premio son la calidad, la fiabilidad, la compatibilidad ecológica, la eficiencia ergonómica y la rentabilidad. The total number of visitors to Pulire was 17,108, of which 11,859 from Italy and 5,249 from abroad. 75% of foreign visitors came from Europe, 18% from Asia, 4% from America, 2% from Africa and 1% from Oceania. First in terms of European presence were Germany (8.38%), Slovenia (7.40%) and Spain (6.64%). For the non-European countries, the presence of the Russian Federation (16.30%) and Israel (10.81%) was noteworthy, in addition to that of China, South Korea and the United Arab Emirates. On the other hand, Chile, Argentina, Ecuador, the United States and Uruguay led visitors from the Americas. South Africa, followed by Egypt and Tunisia, stood out among the top 5 from Africa. 41% of the total number of visitors was made up of commercial companies, 30% service companies, 19% manufacturing companies, 7% distributors, 2% customers and the remaining 1% institutions. A success in terms of numbers and attendance for an event of great international scope and of particular prestige. “The continuous presence of visitors in the corridors,” commented D’Andrea, “and the feeling of optimism in the air showed that there is still the will to think about the future, the market, new opportunities”.

Product of the Year PULIRE 2019

The international trade fair dedicated to professional cleaning, which reflects a constantly growing market with an eye on the environment, was held at Veronafiere from May 21 to 23 Loredana Vitulano

O

rigo2 from Vileda wins the “Product of the Year Pulire 2019” award. The new Award established by the organisers of the Verona Pulire 2019 international trade fair recognises the research carried out by companies operating in the sector of professional cleaning and the effectiveness of products placed on the market. Toni D’Andrea, Paul Goldin, Michel de Bruin, Tibor Ritz, Virna Re and Cássia Almeida are the members of the prestigious international Jury. The three finalists were announced at the awards ceremony: in addition to Vileda’s winning Origo2 trolley, the other two were the floor cleaning system erGO! clean Unger and the green-Effective Performance Calculator system of Werner & Mertz. The first edition of the new award attracted the attention of all product categories: 9 candidate products belong to the Machines category, 6 to Equipment and 7 to Products and Accessories for the environment, 5 are Products for cleaning, maintenance and disinfection, 3 for IT Services, 2 for Components and finally 1 candidate among Accessories. For a total of 33 products (18 of Italian companies and 15 of foreign companies). The products

belong to 25 companies - 14 Italian and 11 foreign (Germany, China, USA, Netherlands, Slovakia) - which participated in the Pulire 2019 event as exhibitors and co-exhibitors. “These numbers confirm the intuition behind the idea of establishing the award, giving voice also to the market. Because today just looking at the innovation of a product is limiting, if not seen in the implications of use and satisfaction”, underlines Toni D’Andrea, managing director of Afidamp Servizi, the company that created the Award. Pulire was one of the first events to offer an award that recognises the efforts and progress made by manufacturing companies on the innovation front, taking the Innovation Award forward for twenty years in the last ten editions. “The great novelty of ‘Product of the Year’ lies in the exclusive recognition of an article, (machine, product, equipment, system) that has achieved consensus and success on the market over the last year in relation to its performance qualities”. The values on which the award is based are quality, reliability, eco-compatibility, ergonomic efficiency and cost-effectiveness, different but equally important, as they represent the characteristics sought by customers.

he breathtaking pace with which technology is evolving has definitely changed the world of shopping. If, in fact, until a little over ten years ago, to buy a product it was necessary to go to the point of sale, nowadays purchases are more and more often carried out sitting comfortably in the living room of the home and browsing the multiple online purchase platforms, which most often - offer products and prices that are difficult to find in traditional stores. To keep up with increasingly pressing technology, therefore, companies not only have to worry about creating an e-commerce site (whose main purpose - it should be remembered - is 52

not so much to sell online, as to send new customers to the physical point of sale), but also to “satisfy” and “pamper” the customer in the store. Offering an in-store customer experience through a good WiFi network will allow buyers not only to stay online even during the shopping experience, but above all to spend more time in the store. The WiFi network has now become an indispensable service that users expect to be able to find anywhere. WIFI AS A PRIMARY GOOD

In particular, to understand how customer-user behaviour is changing due to the availability or otherwise of the “signal”, we present the results of a survey that Ruckus Networks commis-

sioned from The Harris Poll. The survey, carried out in August 2018 on a sample of over 1,500 US adults between the ages of 18 and 64, showed that most respondents would like WiFi in bars (69%), restaurants (64%) and stores (62%). Furthermore, 49% would negatively judge a store that advertises free WiFi access but is unable to offer an easy and stable connection. Two adults out of five (43%) would reduce the time spent in the store itself. 60% of the sample declared their willingness to provide their e-mail address in exchange for free access to the network; this percentage approaches that of users (70%) who provide their data in exchange for customised offers. The research shows that, when connected to a sto-

Connectivity is considered fundamental also as regards payment transactions: 82% would like to complete purchases without having to wait in line, paying a salesperson with a mobile POS. 79% would like to be able to pay in-store purchases with an app, without interacting with a salesperson (the percentage rises to 87% between the ages of 18 and 34). BUILDING CUSTOMER LOYALTY THROUGH WIFI

But how to use the WiFi connection to communicate with customers and

build their loyalty? To achieve the desired result it is not enough - in fact it is potentially dangerous - to create an open and free WiFi connection in the store. It must above all be managed through the use of a hotspot, that is a wireless network that works with an access control software able to “see” individual connections and intercept users before they start browsing. Thanks to this tool, customers need to create their own account to connect to the internet in the store. This is what makes the difference and allows retailers to obtain sensitive user data (for example: name, e-mail, mobile number, etc.) and consent to be able to contact them for promotional purposes. In this way it is possible to obtain a complete address

Para comprender cómo está cambiando el comportamiento del cliente-usuario debido a la disponibilidad o no de la “señal”, presentamos los resultados de una encuesta que Ruckus Networks encargó a The Harris Poll. La encuesta, realizada en agosto de 2018 en una muestra de más de 1 500 adultos estadounidenses con edades comprendidas entre los 18 y 64 años, mostró que cuando están conectados a la red Wi-Fi de una tienda, el 42 % busca descuentos y promociones, el 30 % usa la aplicación de tienda, el 29 % compara los precios con los de otras tiendas, el 45 % revisa el correo electrónico y el 40 % usa las redes sociales. constantly evolving market is increasingly bringing attention to materials and products. A commitment that goes hand in hand with a design that is also increasingly sought after, so that each order ends up corresponding to an increasingly specific request, with a good deal of customisation on the product itself and with a specific expectation of results. In practice, therefore, tastes change, styles and trends change, materials evolve, technologies are updated and,

consequently, productive activities must also adapt. To cope with this evolution, in fact, there are those who try to expand the range of products by enriching it with types and finishes, according to those that have managed to capture new tastes for new trends. But there are also those who prefer to organise themselves according to the specific request received, either by customising production with the help of subcontractors, obviously ready because pre-alerted, or by directly establishing “open” collaboration relationships,


according to specifications required from time to time, with the establishment of a real production line open in the technical contents, to be filled with the specific request and to be addressed according to the skills required for that single case. DECENTRALISATION OF WORK

A real supply chain, therefore, that is new and organised differently from in the past, because it is organised for the application of technologies and solutions sought for every single product or for each single request. A supply chain determined by the request for technical, organisational and productive capacity, which can hardly support a single company and which takes the form of decentralisation of those processes or those phases of processing phases of those components or those parts of the product that require technical expertise and particular technology. And so

also where this leads to a real outsourcing of activity. With an obvious double advantage: the achievement of those particularities that otherwise would be difficult or uneconomical to obtain internally and avoid straining their internal organisation at the expense of the rest of production. However, for both solutions, that is both for the use of subcontractors and for the organisation of the production line open to decentralisation or the outsourcing of processes and activities, a good dose of attention is needed, given that the final responsibilities of the product towards the market do not escape us simply because we have entrusted ourselves to others, even if specifically sought after. In fact, and let us not forget it, on the market the product travels under the name of the manufacturer who has turned to one or other of the aforementioned solutions and not under the name of those who have been turned to. It is therefore necessary to take precautions to trust subject that are reliable and professional from a technical-productive point of view and subjects whose knowledge of the modus operandi is known or verification of which in the course of work is accessible. It is also necessary to take precautions by implementing solid protections from the contractual point of view. Here, however, the roads are different and sometimes even many, although not always all suitable: ranging from the provision of rigorous quality standards to the imposition of documentation; from the imposition of security deposits to the request for subscription of economically significant guarantee bonds; from the request for insurance forms and indemnity clauses, for transferring back any compensation consequences, to constraints of technical-productive liability. However, this does not detract from the fact that what must constitute a determining reason for choice is and remains the criterion for identifying the external subject to turn to, or the

De hecho, el producto en el mercado viaja con el nombre del fabricante. Moreover, this should also be the case with regard to the contractual relationship that will be established at that point, given that it should, yes, embody the decisive reason for that choice, but no less the goal to be achieved. Generally, the alternative falls between subcontracting and sub-supply. But here also attention must be paid because the choice of subcontracting is often improper, as it is applied in a manner that is inconsistent with its principles and limits. In fact, in the common idea, sub-supply evokes the concept of collaboration and economic cooperation better than subcontracting, because the contractual relationship is apparently closer to the traditional idea of the supply chain. But this is only in appearance. In fact, where the recourse to the third party, outside of its corporate organisation, takes place to refer that process or part of the work autonomously to the third party, subcontracting has very little to do with it and is sometimes a dangerous contractual hybrid. Even more so when that autonomy of workman-

ship was precisely the reason for the choice of referral to the third party. On the contrary, subcontracting (but also the contract itself ) represents the best and most suitable instrument for delegating a specific expertise and capacity in a particular matter to a third party. It is no coincidence that the subcontractor (and so also the contractor himself ) is called on with his client to achieve the desired and sought after result precisely through its organisational-entrepreneurial and technical-productive autonomy, with consequent title and foundation also for an involvement in liability in the event of defects or non-compliance with what was commissioned.

Sub-supply, by contrast, implements a real technical and technological dependence. So, if autonomy in this sense is less, liability can only be less. Of course, compared with the market, the result does not change much, given that, for the consumer, the direct interlocutor is the vendor and given that, in relation to liability for a defective product, the principle of the concurrent liability of all those who participated in realisation of the product applies. Without prejudice, in both cases, to internal claims.

Today the company has a R&D department that in junction with the internal plastic mold making workshop provide new products to the molding department that counts on 30 injection machineries and a brush making department with 16 tufting machineries and 4 strip brush machineries. Spival has as much catalogue products as OEM ones. In the last years a new line of innovative and competitive mop frames and mop called FPS Pulito was created using the previous experiences. 66

Spival has a complete production chain from the development to manufacturing for brushes and accessories for cleaning equipment and industrial uses. In 2018 two tailor made brush making machineries will be delivered to increase production capacity and flexibility. Also for the molding department it is going to be updated with the arrival of the 30th injection machinery. New software and two rapid prototyping machines were acquired for the R&D department to speed up the development process. All these improvements have been made to be the ideal partner for the production of cleaning accessories. ¿Cuáles son las estrategias de marketing y los apoyos que ofrece a su clientela internacional? También para el departamento de moldeo se actualizará con la llegada de la 30ª máquina de inyección. Se adquirió un nuevo software y dos máquinas de creación rápida de prototipos para el departamento de R& D para acelerar el proceso de desarrollo. Todas estas mejoras se han hecho para ser el socio ideal para la producción de accesorios de limpieza.

To illustrate the wide range of equipment that the pest control operator (PCO) uses in disinfestation services, it seems useful to give an example that we consider very pertinent even if, at first glance, it may seem irrelevant: plastic pollution in the seas. It is our belief that it is not the plastic that is guilty. Humans throw it everywhere in an indiscriminate way and if plastic ends up in the sea it seems to be a completely passive subject of the crime ascribed to it. The same also applies to chemistry: our products, if used well, solve problems, they do not create them. So the focus for PCOs is to use the resources that are made available to them and the related application procedures well. POSSIBLE MISTAKES

tion; in fact, the choice of the PMC is the responsibility of the technical service and the schedule of treatments as well as the places in which to intervene are defined in the contract (which, it is to be hoped, according to careful monitoring). Now the preparation of the solution-suspension of use for the PMC-Biocides that it requires is performed at the moment and requires attention but for a rather short time and the instructions for the operator are quite simple (g or ml per litre). For correct or incorrect distribution, the argument becomes wider and leads us to equipment. INFORMATION, TRAINING AND COACHING

The goal we set ourselves is to give information on the main types of equipment and to mention how the training must convince (motivate) people on the importance that the correct use of a piece of equipment must guarantee the exact unit dosage (ml per units


of measurement: m2 or m3) targeted at the areas to be treated (surfaces, foliage, water or air). Coaching (delegated to professional training courses) must activate almost automatic manual procedures by the PCO so that he/she can operate correctly and at the same time observe the environment in which the disinfestation work is carried out (a work that always requires much time). The analogy with driving a car seems to us to be pertinent: use of the gear lever, steering wheel and pedals is automatic, but our attention must always be paid to traffic as well. SPRAYERS

The equipment consists of a tank in which a liquid under pressure is comminuted and made to pass through nozzles. Sprayers make it possible to target the use-suspension solution contained on the areas to be treated with the utmost precision. They can be classified as manual or motor. The distinction is intuitive. In motorised devices the pump can be operated by a petrol engine and an electric motor (alternating current or battery). The amount of liquid dispensed varies from high to low volume. To be clear, in combatting crawling insects the high volume is on average 100 ml/m2 (on a vertical surface we are at the limit of dripping), the medium volume is instead 50 ml/m2; in some cases, if equipped with turbulence nozzles, these devices can also be used in disinfection with average dosages of 0.1 ppm (100 ml/m3) which, with micro-drops of 20 microns in diameter, can reach an ambient air disinfection and have a certain effect also on surfaces when the micro-drops are deposited on these surfaces.

La principal recomendación es que los peligros de las desviaciones aumentan con la potencia del equipo utilizado y con la disminución del diámetro de las microgotas dispensadas. Un punto de excelencia es la formación (delegada en cursos de formación profesional), que debe activar procedimientos manuales casi automáticos en el OCP para que pueda operar correctamente y al mismo tiempo observar el entorno en el que se lleva a cabo el trabajo de desinsectación (trabajo que siempre requiere mucho tiempo).

In these motorised devices the solution-suspension is the combination between the micronisation of a liquid under pressure that meets a flow of air at low pressure, but at high speed. Also in this case the motor can be petrol or electric (also with battery). The field of action varies from disinfestation, to disinfection and phytosanitary defence. Operating volumes range from medium to low volume. In the fight against adult mosquitoes, volumes of approximately 50 l/ha should be used depending on the product used, the environment in which one works (parks or city streets, campsites), speed of progress and concentration of the formulation. By way of example, a medium-power atomiser can treat 200,000 cubic metres in one hour of work (the projection on the ground is equivalent to about 8 hectares which would require about 400 litres of the suspension-solution used. Motor powers vary from fractions of hp to over 100 hp. It is therefore a very broad product category. Danger of drifts: zero, medium-low in closed environments, high in the open, so we feel to recommend the use of electrostatic devices that increase effectiveness, reducing the danger of unwanted drifts. We will not go so much into this category which requires high level professional skills and use of specifically registered products. We will limit ourselves to mentioning the classic definition: 5 l/

PLASTIC Precision of language would, in fact, require that the term “plastic materials” should be used given the great variety of polymers that are indicated with this term. Chemically speaking, in nature amber, the shell of turtles and the horns of certain ungulates are “plastic” being natural polymers. They are generally used by introducing thermostable products into hot air flows. Danger of drifts: high if used outside. CONCLUSIONS

More than conclusions we could talk about recommendations. The first is that the dangers of drifts increase with the power of the equipment used and with the decrease in the diameter of the micro-drops dispensed. In any case, in the professional training courses of technical operators (PCO) coaching is the point of excellence. 80
