Experience with your family this summer Kelowna Offers Summer Fun for the Whole Family By Stan Sauerwein

The

Okanagan may boast of the finest wine touring in Canada but it’s still the great variety of family attractions that make Kelowna such a popular destination for all ages. A sandy beach bathed by a beaming sun is practically a patented family experience for Kelowna visitors during the summer time. With more than 2000 hours of sunshine, a visit to the centre of “Okanagan vacation fun,” rightly has to start beside Okanagan Lake in Kelowna. It’s just a matter of choosing where to begin working your holiday. City Park fringes downtown Kelowna and hosts Hot Sands Beach, aptly named and one of the most popular lakeside beaches for families in the city. Hot Sands Beach is also located next to a free children’s water park and playground when a new diversion or two may be required. The park also offers some respite from the sun with shade trees and the gorgeous VanDeem Rose Garden for a stroll.

! Gyro Beach to the south, towards Kelowna’s Mission district, is popular with the teen set, and families can enjoy private beach time at Bertram Creek Regional Park. Even further from downtown than Gyro, Bertram Park has tall pines that grow almost to the beach. The park area is popular for birthday parties and has onsite barbeques for beach goers!

Tugboat Bay Beach, north of City Park, is another popular lakeside retreat located in the Cultural District of downtown Kelowna. The museums and art galleries to be found in the six-block long Cultural District are a short walk from this beach. Along the way, everyone in the family can enjoy discovering Kelowna’s unique identity as interpreted by artists. The Cultural District has 16 works on display in both indoor and outdoor settings ranging from monumental sculpture to functional streetscaping, sometimes with a touch of whimsy.

!

When you want to occupy the children, there’s nothing better than meeting new furry friends in an unconventional setting. Carmelis Goat Cheese Artisan is a tasty departure from the norm. This boutique dairy is located some 12 km south of downtown near to CedarCreek Estate Winery. Absolutely heavenly goat milk gelato, made in 24 flavours, is a specialty to enjoy, as are the 16 to 20 varieties of goat cheese, while you soak in views of Kelowna or the farm’s quirky goats. Tours for groups of four people or more can be pre-booked for a small tour fee. (www.carmelisgoatcheese.com)!

Country Home Candle was started in the basement of Karen and Peter Northgraves home in 1989. After two years of considerable testing and development, sweat and hot wax on the floors and many thoughts of giving up, a product was finally created that could compete with the other candle products that were being sold in Canada at the time. In 1991 Country Home Candle was launched in the two stores that Karen and Peter owned at the time in Simcoe and Tillsonburg, Ontario.

!

A lot has changed since those early days in the basement. Country Home Candle moved into their very own Country Home in 1998 and now occupies a 20,000 sq. ft. factory and retail store located on 5 acres in rural Norfolk County, Ontario. Norfolk County was recently named “Canada’s Garden” and is rich in agricultural history and home to new award winning wineries and breweries, herb and vegetable farms, Carolinian forests, exciting outdoor adventure parks and miles of unspoiled beaches on this south coast frontier. Country Home Candle’s most recent product innovations have included the use of a proprietary blend of vegetable waxes and the use of customized labeling which clearly differentiate them from the many other ordinary candle products that are found throughout shopping malls and discount stores. This vegetable wax blend includes coconut, palm and soy waxes, which are all derived from nature. They burn cool and clean and deliver fragrance to your home, as they should with a beautiful glow.

In a very short period of time the wholesale division was started and Country Home Candle products were being sold in retail stores not just across Canada, but in both the U.S. and Europe. Country Home Candle has always strived to be a leader in creative product development, product quality and customer satisfaction.

/0!

Country Home Candle now has over 300 products to choose from and is continually changing products and fragrances while adapting to the needs and desires of customers. You can find Country Home Candle products in hundreds of independent retail stores across Canada and on their website www.countryhomecandle.com

Lemon Sole Goujons with Asianesque Rouille !

We’ve got a bit of an Asianesque variation on rouille here for sauce, but feel free to go traditional if you prefer, or use tartar sauce, or even a mixture of Greek yogurt, lime juice, and chopped fresh coriander. If you aren’t a sauce person, try these wonderfully crisp little morsels with just some lime juice squeezed over and a smattering of coriander leaves strewn on top. ! !

For the sauce 1 cup (250 mL) mayonnaise 3 tablespoons sambal oelek 2 tablespoons lime juice 1 teaspoon tomato paste 1 garlic clove, crushed Salt and pepper! !

For the sauce, stir together the mayonnaise, sambal oelek, lime juice, tomato paste, garlic, and salt and pepper. Taste and adjust the seasonings. Pat the fish dry. Slice it into finger strips. Put flour in a shallow dish and season it well with salt and pepper. In a second shallow dish, beat the egg. Heat a good inch (2.5 cm) of oil in a deep sauté pan. When the oil is sizzling, working in batches, dip the fish in the seasoned flour to coat all sides and shake off any excess. Dip in egg, letting the excess drip off, then dip in the flour again. Lower the fish into the oil and fry until crisp and golden, 2 to 3 minutes. Remove to paper towels to drain and season with salt. Transfer to a serving platter. Scatter over coriander leaves and drop around a few wedges of lime. Pass the sauce separately. Makes: 4 servings! !

Rosemary-Marinated Quail !

Quail must be the speediest of all birds to cook, and there’s something about them that always feels like a treat. This is a herb-flavoured version, but they also like spice, so another time try them with a rub of crushed fennel, cumin, and coriander seeds. The farro on p. 121 of Paris Express would make a suitable side. ! ! !

4 quail, split in half Salt and pepper 3 to 4 tablespoons butter, softened Leaves from 1 branch fresh Rosemary, chopped 1 garlic clove, crushed !

Season the quail with salt and pepper. Mix together the butter, rosemary, and garlic; rub it evenly over the quail and (carefully, so you don’t tear the skin) as much under the skin as possible. If you have time, cover and refrigerate for an hour or longer to allow the flavours to infuse the birds. Heat the broiler with the rack at the very top. Arrange the quail on a baking sheet skin side up and broil until the juices run clear, 12 to 15 minutes. Makes: 4 servings !

Salted Caramel Pots de Crème !

! !

A very, very dangerous dessert worth saving room for, but be warned: it has created more than one addict.! 1 cup (200 g) sugar 1-1/2 cups (375 mL) heavy cream 1/2 cup (125 mL) whole milk 6 egg yolks Fleur de sel !

Heat the oven to 325°F (160°C). Bring a large kettle of water to a boil. Set six 1/2-cup (125 mL) ramekins in a shallow baking pan. Melt the sugar in a skillet with 1/4 cup (60 mL) water over medium-high heat, stirring until the sugar has dissolved. Stop stirring and cook to amber caramel, about 8 minutes. Standing well back (the mixture will sputter), whisk in the cream and milk. Whisk the yolks in a medium bowl, then slowly stir in the milk mixture. Strain into a jug or large measuring cup. Pour the custard into the ramekins. Set the baking dish in the oven, then pour in hot water from the kettle to come halfway up the sides of the ramekins. Cover the dish with foil. Bake until the custard has just the slightest, slightest sense of wobble in the centre, about 30 minutes. Remove the ramekins from the water bath and cool completely on a rack. Cover and chill until serving. Serve with a pinch of fleur de sel atop each. Makes: 6 servings ! ! !
