Tribute to Aftab… Dear Professor, Firstly my sincerest apologies for not replying immediately… Reading your email, I was completely shocked. Professor, personally am highly gratified to you. Without you it wouldn’t have been possible for ICAT to be a partner with BCU. It was you who helped us at every stage of development in college. We could clearly see a great positive transformation in our college that is the turning point at ICAT.

Also, I personally remember the way you have taken care of me whenever I visited UK. It was such a warmth and great memory. I learnt a lot from you Professor, you have personally taught and guided me a lot that I will never forget in my life. Without you, completing CELT would have been impossible. I personally thank you very much for CELT and all other knowledge, experience you shared with us. You have been an inspirational person and a well wisher for me. I am sure; I am going to miss the experience, which I got from you in the future. Professor, whenever you are in Chennai, it’s my pleasure to assist you. Kindly give the opportunity for it. We have not had very close contact, but it has been such a pleasure working with you. Tribute to Aftab… Hi Aftab, I woke up this morning with a severe stomach upset that hasn't gone away. I'm really sorry to say I can't come tonight. I wanted to come to thank you in public for what you've done for me. You took a huge risk taking me on 18 years ago. It gave me a renewed lease of life by using my experience in the business to assist in helping younger people. You've also been one of those people that Milton Glaser describes as ‘holders of the flame’. Someone who understands and carries the knowledge of how great design can transform the world in a positive way. You've been a great support. Thank you Aftab. Tribute to Aftab… Dear Aftab It's very difficult to express in words what Professor Aftab has contributed in building up my thought process. There is so much to learn from him in different capacities. He has always been a supportive pillar in guiding as how modules have to be delivered to students. He is always been a strong believer in delivering a course in multidimensional perspective rather than encouraging a narrower attitude towards design. He is a good philosopher, guide, mentor or colleague but a person who has a sound knowledge of cultural and moral values, which, distinguishes him to understand someone empathetically. He prefers doing his work so meticulously that there's no room left for argument or discussion. It's been a pleasure and honour working with him and would look forward to work with him in future. Aftab and I have had some very interesting times together. My most memorable jaunt (together with Aftab's charming wife, Saieda), included visits to the beach. During one such trip, and on consecutive days, we swam in the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea! Although, over our many years of working together, Aftab and I haven't always seen eye-‐to-‐eye, our dealings with one another have always been gentlemanly exchanges. They will be missed.

Tribute to Aftab… Dear Aftab

I first met Aftab, fifteen years ago, when he formally interviewed me for my first role as a part time academic. He was always extremely supportive and generous about my work and very understanding, as he was to all of my colleagues. In particular, I recall the occasion, when we caught up one morning, in the legendary stairwells at Gosta Green, where he gently helped me realise that the position that I'd accepted was actually full time;). He took me under his wing and guided me through the myriad of wonderful opportunities within Higher Education; he literally broadened my horizons by opening up International collaborations through LASALLE-‐ SIA, Singapore; entrusting me with remote assessment through the SARS crisis; and building up my contribution to the school through charging me with the responsibility of our schools annual degree shows, of which he celebrated the achievements of every individual student with equal merit and applause. Aftab is a great design teacher; he has vibrant passion and belief in his subject of Graphic Design. Quietly, he is a meticulous collector of quality design ephemera, of which he has preserved several important collections in his private archives, which he openly shares. I've enjoyed many a happy

afternoon in his company, talking about the key success of our business that of creative ideas, culture and more importantly education, and how great teaching and belief can change lives. As his belief in me fifteen years ago changed mine. I thank you Aftab, and look forward to working with you again in the future, you are a great man. Dear Aftab Derbyshire College of Higher Education produced in 1985 an extraordinarily high standard of work for the D&AD/Post Office Student Awards Scheme. Since the Post office Scheme started 6 years ago it is most interesting to see how it has become truly national and how standards have improved throughout the country.

Derbyshire College has now put itself on the UK map as a School, which is producing students of an exceptionally high standard. The College broke new records this year by receiving so many Prizes and ‘Highly Commended’ certificates. I look forward in the future to this College producing even more exciting work. Tribute to Aftab… Dear Aftab I was told that you wanted ‘to go quietly and without a fuss’ and consequently respected that request. I hope that, nevertheless, you enjoyed the farewell gathering with your immediate colleagues in Graphic Design. However, I cannot let you depart without acknowledging the important role that you have played in the School of Art and Design and, in particular, in the development of Graphic Design. Please accept my personal thanks for all of the hard work, effort, inspiration and motivation that you have unceasingly offered to students and to the course in general. Whilst I am sorry to see you leave I am at least confident that the spirit that you have helped to engender will survive and continue to flourish, and I am sure that this is what you would wish. Dear Aftab I’m a little embarrassed to be caught writing the foreword to this years presentation of graphic design. For one thing, my few thoughts arrived last, least, and well after the date they were asked for. I don’t deserve space alongside the efforts of the talented young people whose work makes up this show. They know how to meet the deadlines. For another reason, what ever I say about the standard of Derbyshire College

graphics might suggest some bias in my writing of Creative Review. I can only stress that I have yet to receive any form of financial encouragement from tutors or students at the college. It just so happens that we keep publishing work of theirs. Perhaps they will pay up soon. Meanwhile, in all objectivity, I can say they are not all bad at Derbyshire College. There’s many a design consultancy or advertising agency that could benefit from the freshness of thinking and sheer enthusiasm that comes out of the graphics staff and students. And it’s seen at its most lively in the annual special projects. This year’s one is famous dates. Their own show could make a claim to be included as one of those dates worth remembering. The only thing is, they don’t do the same one twice. Next year it is the “Pirates”. They certainly are gearing up to the realities of the creative industries. Tribute to Aftab… Hi Aftab Wow... A total joy to see your retirement movie and PPT presentation. I wish you a fulfilling and happy retirement, which I've no doubt will be the case. On a personal note... I'd like to say a huge 'Thank You' to both you and Keith. I've been so fortunate to have a career in Graphic Design. Thirty-‐three years as a graphic designer and each day I still awake looking forward to working on the next design, solving the next problem, thinking of the next idea. I do remember our association since 2001. The fact that we are in touch even after so many years is indeed fortunate. My directorship of NID was indeed a high point in my professional career which will be fondly remembered because it enhanced my own reach and personality while helping me to unleash my pent-‐up energies to place the institute in another orbit during my stay of about a decade which is well captured in over 82 pages in “50 years of NID” brought out as the Golden Jubilee celebration publication. When I first started working at UCE I did not really have any real connection or knowledge of Aftab but he seemed a distant figure living the in clouds on Gosta Green connected to a god like figure called David Knight. But during a visit to Paperpoint in Covent Garden, Aftab and myself spend some time together and I started to become aware of the real Aftab, his past, interests and personality. From that stage and across a number of different roles for us both, I hopefully can say we got to know each other better and became friends. During our recent Reaccreditation event in Hong Kong and the time we spend together as a team has reinforced my views of Aftab, his professionalism, attention to detail, coolness under extreme pressure and questioning, his ability to answer any question however difficult that is thrown at him and us, his grasp of the bigger picture, ease of working with others and bring colleagues on-‐board, I can go on… But on a personal level and aspects of Aftab’s personality that I feel underpins the above and are to me more important, is his…

Dear Aftab Firstly I have to thank you for remembering and sending me a mail about our conversations that we had about 13 years ago. Though they are still fresh in my head. I am surprised to know u still remember them and more than that remembering me. I am so honoured and feel that this mail is the biggest prize I have ever got till date. Today what I am is because of you. Being so strong with my career and marrying Poornima. Your advice to see things differently about our future changed a lot of things...I still remember you telling me "you come from a small town called Chennai". Your presence during my wedding in spite of your hectic schedule was a very kind gesture. You have been not just a mentor but a father to me who has helped me in many ways. Tribute to Aftab… Dear Aftab, Sincere apologies for the lagged reply, was on the move because of some family engagements. The sudden news of your decision to leave BCU came by as a complete surprise. I had mixed feelings when I learned of it; sad for me the first association to Gosta Green even before I stepped into the campus was you, on the other hand I’m glad about the exciting opportunities that await for you. It has truly been an honour to be associated with you, as my mentor, guardian, and family away from home. I feel extremely lucky to have been tutored by you as one of the last batches and be able to gain from your experience not only on design but every aspect of professional and personal life. From minutiae details on drafting professional emails, structuring presentations, critically analysing our own works to understanding design in just the most simple way put across – your three levels of communication. Tribute to Aftab… Knowing Aftab has been a pleasure, a genuine one, and a colleague who became a friend. The workplace is often a complex compromise, distractions from a personal and collective set of values, game playing, posturing, manipulations… so it is a delight to meet and work with someone who is consistent, a safe pair of hands. For me, on many occasions Aftab was this person, always happy to sit down with you and listen and offer considered and sensible advice, gentle advice. Hard working and genuinely committed to his work, to his colleagues and to the students. An experienced diplomat, who was as happy at BIAD, as he was at HKDI, ICAT or SUIC. His grace and dignity was a joy to behold during the re-‐accreditation panel discussions at HKDI in March 2015. Towards the end of his long academic career, he demonstrated his expertise, diplomacy, grace and dignity on an international stage. Not soapboxing or showing off, just a quiet confidence, an example to all. This quiet confidence, grace and consideration are evident in his design, elegant and sophisticated, attention to detail. So Art & Design at Birmingham will miss Professor Aftab, but his example is a legacy worth remembering. Thank you Aftab, for your advice, support, inspiration and friendship.

Dear Aftab I'm so sorry to hear this news, I can't believe that a situation was allowed to evolve that would cause someone as valuable as you to move on. It seems counter intuitive. However, I'm sure you will find another way to contribute your knowledge and experience and another party will benefit greatly as a result. I have to say that I have always felt reassured knowing that you were working towards the same goal, creating educational opportunities for young people -‐ our future. Tribute to Aftab… Dear Aftab I've known Aftab for around 15 years and I'm sure that many will have already mentioned his organised, methodical approach to working life. Armed with files, pens and a wealth of knowledge I have seen him on many occasions manage with ease some of the most complex scenarios that a career in HE can present. However on a personal note it is two very different memories that ring the loudest for me. The first was a phone call to see how I was. I'd just gone through the anguish of losing my mum at the age of 30. I was parked up near home, an emotional wreck when Aftab called. ''Don't worry about the course it's all covered here, be with your family and take the time you need''. A simple gesture that helped so much. My fondest memory though has to be when I first joined BIAD and as part of a long forgotten reason I was told 'we need to go to Aftab' I got my stuff together and headed off to what I presumed was another committee. Only to be met by the man in question. I've often wondered though what the acronym A.F.T.A.B would have stood for! All the best for the future and please stay in touch. Paul

Tribute to Aftab… Dear Aftab Many, many years ago in a land called Gosta Green, Aftab and myself, who both then had very different roles, were doing a Health and Safety ‘Walk around’ in the Department of Visual Communication. We wondered onto the second floor where Vis Com had its main Lecture theatre. Two weeks previously, Alan Fletcher (the greatest and most famous Graphic Designer of his generation) had been in to give a talk to the students and Aftab, of course, who was so proud to have organised and achieve this coup, had a motion passed through Senior management that we should call the room ‘The Alan Fletcher Lecture Theatre’. With no expense spared, a foam board plaque had been erected in the middle of the front door proclaiming the room’s new title. On approach I turned to my colleague in horror, “Bloody hell Aftab, some little bastard has already scribbled some shitty graffiti on the corner of the plaque". With index finger in mouth, I, in my usual Neanderthal style, slobbered on the appendage and proceeded to scrub away at the offending eye sore with some vigour. Without warning, I was immediately rugby tackled from behind by Aftab, his clipboard had fallen to the ground and for a man of his build, and he

held me in a rather impressive pincer like grip. Now, at moments like this your life flashes before you, I had known Aftab for many years, this wasn’t his normal behaviour, he was a very gentle man. I also knew that Aftab was a very happily married family man and as the corridors were deserted, had he finally taken advantage and fell fowl to my irresistible manly charms. It wasn’t until a split second later his screams aided my relief (or disappointment depending which way you look at it), “Lander you bloody fool, and you’re rubbing off Fletchers signature…”

Seriously, a gentle, warm hearted man, who in all the years that I knew him always retained his diplomacy, dignity and professionalism regardless of the situation. A genuine ‘one off’ who will be sadly missed. Best wishes. Paul

Tribute to Aftab…

Aftab is the longest serving member of the School, and has made an inestimable contribution to its current standing and success. As Course Director for both Undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes, he was responsible for much of the inspirational groundwork in setting the direction for contemporary design education that has been a strong foundation for the School’s subsequent development. He has also given long service and support as Deputy Head of School to a sequence of Heads of School over many years. In certain cases this has presented very significant challenges for the diplomatic Deputy. In particular, Aftab has taken a very important role in the establishment and development of our various long-‐standing international collaborative programmes. With meticulous attention to detail, and extensive academic knowledge and experience, he has taken a lead role in guiding the school's overseas business, over many years, to its current level of success. He has shown by example that sustained attention to the detail of academic process is essential in developing such associations, but it is the ability to build close personal working relationships with a wide variety of individuals over a sustained period that really makes the difference in ensuring the long-‐term

Tribute to Aftab… Excerpt from the Hilfiger Diaries I’m on the upper deck of the tram to Happy Valley, at the front, the air like a hair dryer through the open window. We are on Hennessey Road and this is Hong Kong 2013 at dusk. As Aftab and I lurch towards Sogo, he decides we should stay on the tram to Lane Crawford, Times Square-‐ after all, the options are greater, the opportunity to burn plastic even more compelling. Aftab the discrete shop-‐a-‐holic, is on a mission to introduce me to as many Tommy Hilfiger shrines as possible in a single evening. My thoughts drift to a warm evening in Norman, Oklahoma, mid 90’s, mid-‐Spring. We are moving out into the central mall, the air like a hair dryer through the open door. I am about to be introduced to my first Tommy Hilfiger shrine and my first TH purchase. It is eight-‐thirty in the evening, the day’s business at University of Oklahoma well behind us -‐ and I am now a convert already. We celebrate with two long glasses of ice-‐cold orange juice. Aftab has taste; Aftab has influence. Aftab has style and I am grateful for the many conversations and excellent company we have enjoyed. Aftab

When I first met Aftab we were both starting a new role, he as Course Director of the BA (Hons) Visual Communication course, I as his newest Pathway Leader (Illustration). He was proud of his role and this rubbed off on me and in that first year we hosted the first Macmillan Prize in a venue outside London and won the first and only Gold Award for Illustration. (We also together with David Knight, painted the new Vis Comm Boardroom a tasteful shade of Aubergine).

It was this sense of pride that denoted his approach to his various tasks, whether it was his pitch perfect QuarkXPress documents or collated course documentation, hand crafted certificates or the wonderful enamel badge he designed for the 150th anniversary of the Birmingham School of Art in 1993.

In February 2001, Aftab was the first ever-‐academic member of staff in the School of Visual Communication’s history to be conferred a ‘Professorship’ outside the automatic Professorship given when becoming a Head of School. Aftab also helped me in my application and I became the second conferred ‘Professor’ in the School. Aftab was always a loyal Deputy to several Heads of School, no easy achievement given the demanding personalities, and latterly he was the Faculty’s first International Director of Academic Partnerships, a role that made full use of his ease of manner and urbane diplomacy. All this taken into account it will be his gentle and humane approach to staff, always interested and always around to listen and advise that we’ll remember. It will seem somewhat strange without him but I’m sure our paths will cross again. Good luck with all future activities and thank you for your kind support. Tribute to Aftab… Professor Aftab Gharda

Significantly, the first time I worked with Aftab was in Hong Kong! We were both attending (but on different sides of the table) a University approval event, which was to be the genesis of the now long term and very successful collaboration with the Hong Kong Design Institute. Aftab’s contribution to the three-‐day event was absolutely central in securing the partnership. His calm explanations of the proposal combined with his meticulous preparations and diplomatic delivery were my first insights into these enviable qualities, which I have come to realise, characterise the man! Subsequently when we were “on the same side of the table” (I moved to the Faculty) I was able to witness these and many others of Aftab’ s qualities, first hand, as he led on the further development and expansion of the Faculty’s international portfolio. Significant here, was the fact that, at the time, the University was extremely reluctant to support overseas collaborations and without Aftab’ s perseverance, quiet resolve and commitment, in truth the Faculty may well have abandoned it’s now very successful overseas portfolio. Aftab and I frequently commented in those early days that we were developing overseas collaborations “despite the University”! However the Faculty now has the largest and

most credible international portfolio within the University with (much expanded) collaborations in Hong Kong, India and Thailand. Central to each of these successes is Aftab’s knowledge of the institutions as well as his ability to work effectively and efficiently with partner institutions. He has achieved this enviable portfolio with a characteristic humility and an elegance of working which disguises the enormous effort and hard work he has undertaken not only to establish the collaborations (“the easy bit” we often commented) but also to sustain and grow the partnerships. It’s a pleasure to note the affection and respect that the colleagues, in all the partnerships have for Aftab, which is clear on each and every occasion, they meet. His work on developing and organising the Faculty’s international collaborations has been obviously successful but a deeper and less obvious benefit of his work has been the “internationalisation” of numerous staff (both here and overseas) and also the curriculum of those programmes involved in the collaborations. Every member of staff who has taught, been involved in the administration or management of the overseas collaborations has been quietly but definitely benefited by the experience and owes gratitude to Aftab. For me, working with Aftab, has been a privilege and an enormous pleasure. He has given me insights into the much specialised domain of overseas collaborations, opportunity to see and understand the cultural nuances of educational approaches on several continents and has been enormously generous in sharing his thoughts, comprehensions and great knowledge. He has also inspired me to attempt (unsuccessfully) to keep my office tidy! He has the one of the tidiest offices I’ve ever seen! I’m certain that his enthusiasm for international collaborations and his experience will mean he continues with his passion! Thanks for everything. Dear Aftab

Though Aftab is a man (a gentleman) who I do not know tangibly well, he is one with whom I nevertheless feel perfectly acquainted and at ease. That is not such a common phenomenon and so I do feel that something will be missing as he departs from our immediate space. One could always sense his essential enthusiasm and calm and, once again, this is a quality of inestimable value in any workplace; one, which we should hope, endures beyond any tendencies toward the obsession with surface. Not least I will miss seeing the row of many and various elephants, which stood in line along the edge of his desk on the third floor. Tribute to Aftab… Dear Aftab I can’t remember when I first met Aftab, but he’s just always been there, keeping everyone grounded and things running smoothly, like the proverbial swan on the lake. I also can’t count the number of times, (well I can, but won’t), that he’s helped me out of a pickle or two. One that immediately comes to mind was where I was required to present all the documentation in a specific student case, and he rightly took me to task on the quality and sloppiness of it. He has been, and will continue to be, a great teacher and I have been lucky enough to benefit many times from his patience and wisdom. You should see my paperwork now. I’m not sure what I’m going to miss most, his urbanity, his gentle yet tough demeanour, his ability to reassure, his consistent sagely advice or his good company.

I think it’s probably just easier to say that I’ll miss Aftab Gharda.

Tribute to Aftab… Dear Professor, Still I am unable to recover from the message that I have read from your email. It is an honour knowing you and pleasure working together for last 4 years. I consider you as our mentor. I really cannot come to terms with the fact that after working with us for all these years you will not see our first cohort graduating. I do not accept this to be adieu but rather a continuation of the same at different level. As you rightly said how much ICAT means to me it means to you as well. Tribute to Aftab… Dear Professor,

Professor Gharda -‐ Our mentor who has been a strong pillar of our organisation since we met for the first time four years back. An evening discussion over a cup of coffee with Praveen Chrispugg who was talking about Professor Aftab Gharda and how he influenced his life while studying in Birmingham City University prompted me to send an invitation inviting him to visit us to conduct a workshop for our students on creativity. Had no idea about the magnitude of the man and his passion about creative education. Prompt came the reply showing his interest and probable visit detail. As we met during his visit in India, we discovered that there are lot more opportunity or possibility of association and many such workshops can be simply be part of the package. At that point we were exploring possibilities of adding on more programmes for delivery at ICAT and Professor Gharda suggested that we could do that together with Birmingham City University. We went through the programmes that the University delivers and found out courses of common interest. Sleepless night for next five months -‐ writing programme specifications and all necessary documents -‐ sending it across and a prompt reply from him at whatever time it is. So many times we wondered whether he sleeps at all!

We were amazed with the time and energy that he contributed so diligently towards completing all required paperwork accurately. Ever so gentle, patient and encouraging he was with us that the workload and impending validation did not scare us a bit. Within no time it was time for visit of the validation panel, validating programmes that is to be rolled out within next 5 years and all these were possible solely for the man we met less than six months before.

Still it is difficult to believe and we all were awestruck during our graduation showcase on 11th July 2015, looking at student's work when our first cohort of this association graduated. It really was overwhelming to see the audience interacting with the students and the confident student shown while explaining their work -‐ industry professionals appreciating student's project and offering to manufacture their design or giving opportunity to work on their project. Thank you Professor for being there for us always while increasing the level of expectation gradually last three years and pushing us to work towards achieving the set goal! Shaswatii

I have known Professor Aftab only since the last 4 years and although our interactions were mostly limited to his visits to ICAT or my visits to BIAD; due to our common interests and passion for all things related to design, we shared a lot during our various discussions on typography, design, creative thinking and life in general. Tribute to Aftab… Dear Professor, It is very sad for us to see you leaving BCU. You were a great support and true motivation for many of us at ICAT. Personally, I owe a very big thanks to you for all the support you have given me. You were a major reason for us to enrol on CELT program. The knowledge, which we gained there, is immense and is definitely helping us to shape us and our college better. With your constant support and timely guidance, as a team we were able to see a drastic change in our college in terms of quality, energy and enthusiasms. You were a major reason behind some milestone achievements in our college. As a team, we owe a high respect and gratitude to you. Your theory in Design, which you taught me at Hyderabad campus, will always be there in my memory and I will use it every time I teach or share feedback to students and staffs. It was a valuable session. Of all memories we had, the best were “The Feast” we had at your home. I still mention to my wife about the generous hospitality and mouth-‐watering food. Tribute to Aftab… Dear Aftab, I have no words to express my sadness that you will no longer be with BCU and interact with us like you have been doing for more than 15 years of our working relationship!!!! It has been a long journey for me personally, and it was thanks to yourself and Prof Tom Jones who introduced me to BIAD and taught me all about the courses and how to market the same. I am eternally grateful to both of you. You have been more than a professional colleague, a friend, a mentor, and in many ways than one, I learnt a lot from you. Your ethical standards at work and your enthusiasm were always your strongest qualities, and this attracted me the most!!! I will miss you terribly and do not believe your place can be taken by anyone. There will be many who will carry on the good work at BCU but the vacuum will stay!!!! I wish you all the best in your professional career post retirement from BCU and firmly believe there will be some place somewhere that you can resume your journey.
