Parametric design has been considered as the cutting edge trend in the architectural design realm, regardless of the debate it arose. This group project endeavours to push students’ creativity to the next level with the introduction of top-down design approach. This is a freeway art project located in the Prince Hwy commissioned by the City of Wyndham. We started with a biomimicry structure - voronoi tunnel: to provide a habitat for birds to reside and meanwhile to act as a ‘patch’ in urban forestry for birds to travel by. As parks and reserves are best known destinations in the City of Wyndham, this would be a great way to welcome the visitors.

We started from a pool of selections, followed by narrowing the choice down using different criteria and finally ended up with the 3D voronoi that we thought would meet the functional and aesthetics purpose.

showroom /office mixed-use neon sign This is a proposed car showroom design project located in the Melbourne CBD on the former Barlow Motors Enterprise site. It is assuming that Barlow Motors still exist today and commissioned us to design a new building for their office and showroom. Barlow Motor founder is well known of his dramatic life and Mr Barlow Jr. is known for his adventurous spirit. This studio consists of two parts: neon sign and building design. My design is aimed to integrate the spirits of Mr Barlow and Barlow Jr. into the neon sign and building.

The indoor sign is composed of hundreds of light tubes arranged in a certain pattern that when the light turn on, a reversed ‘BARLOW‘ sign can be seen on the floor. This is to simulate the founder, A.G. Barlow’s life of contrast with glory and shadow. Contoured elevation symbolizes Mr Barlow’s dramatic life as well as adventurous and ambitious spirit. The sense of dynamic represents the never stopping innovation and challenge this company would embark on.

office project This is a proposed office project for a design firm located in the iconic international style Seagram Building in New York City. The idea is to create a fake mountain with timber panels in the chaos of metropolitan setting. It serves the function of revealing and preserving privacy in the corresponding areas while providing the sense of nature. The timber panels are cut out and oriented differently with various density to achieve that goal.

IIDA Student Competition 2016 Finalist

This project is a proposed construction of American Folk Art Museum in the historical heritage site in Dumbo, Brooklyn to house and exhibit over 5,000 pieces of art work. My concept is to embody the history of Dumbo and the life rise-and-fall of folk artists in the design of the spatial experience. Hence, meandering paths are designed to distil and give options to the visitors, for more intimate experience and unique discoveries in the ground floor permanent gallery. The temporary gallery is interconnected by two ramps, to promote movements not only horizontally, also vertically. Different perspectives to be discovered throughout these movements. 

ideation project

This project is designated to visualize our wildest conception and ideas using different tools. My design is a gallery inspired by Deconstructivism paintings and architecture. It aims to deliver a dynamic visual experience which promotes movement, guided by a main circulation staircase. Interior partitions are fragmented into shards penetrating and breaking through different floors.

3d wallpaper

Designing 3d wallpaper has been an unprecedented course or practice except in Pratt. I have been excited to learn and try to design my own 3d wallpaper. Inspired by the social media in this digital age, I try to represent the infinity space of information and data surrounding us everyday. (3d glasses required to see the 3d effect.) My motif of wallpaper is from movie matrix, it gives the impression of data rain in this infinite space as a metaphor of our contemporary society.

rhythmized foliage Inspired by floral ornaments in the Bed-stuy neighbourhood in Brooklyn, this project aims to design 3d foliage ornaments of today. Started with simple leaf found on campus, I modelled it in Maya and used other deformation tool to recreate a dynamic and vivid motion as if it’s

falling or moving in the wind. To break the convention representation of foliage, I group different motions into one base tile and used rotation and mirror and other approaches to create new presentation of rhythmized foliages ornamentation.

tiling stencil This project aims to design stencil tiling for the white plain facade of a dormitory building on Pratt Institute campus. With the intention of simplicity and presentation of Pratt, I de-constructed the font “Pratt” and designed a set of tiling arrangements. It demonstrates a sense of organic pattern and simplicity. The word “Pratt” occurred twice on the facade and would only resonate with those who are familiar of Pratt.

hand drawings In the age of digital drafting, I still find drawing by hand a very helpful way to express one’s ideas or grasp the essence of the design. Here are some drawings done to study the designed landscapes and architecture in Europe.
