Nature and Environment Interpretation Centres
Interpretation Trails
Manche has a whole host of facilities for visiting its natural heritage, including interpretation centres on themes such as migrating birds, Mont Saint-Michel Bay, the coast and the environment, rivers and other sites. These sites are great places to learn about Manche and offer many varied activities for all.
Interpretation trails are ideal for family fun. They are short paths enlivened with observatories and information or interactive terminals. Learn about the animals, plants, heritage and countryside that you may encounter along the way. Some suggestions : try the interpretation trails of Saire Valley, the Islands Coast and the Regional Nature Park of Cotentin and Bessin.
parks Cotentin and Bessin Marshlands Regional Park
Regional Park of Normandy-Maine
Straddling the departments of La Manche and Calvados, the Regional Park of Cotentin and Bessin Marshes comprises 27000 hectares of marsh and polders that merge with the traditional bocage countryside. Pasture and mown grassland, divided by ditches and dotted with peat bogs, are characteristic of this humid area spreading from one shore to the other of the Cotentin : in the east, from the Bay of Les Veys looking out over the Saint-Marcouf Islands, to the harbour of Saint-Germain-sur-Ay and the dunes of Créances in the west... The marsh turns “white” during the winter floods, giving meaning to the Cotentin’s epithet “peninsula”. Animals, flowers, countryside and architecture are all characteristic of this region. Interpreted footpaths, walks and hikes, activities and tourist roads are all on offer in the region. For information and brochure, contact: Les Ponts d’Ouve Espace de découverte - 50500 Saint-Côme-du-Mont Tel. +33 (0)2 33 71 65 30 ponts.douve@parc-cotentin-bessin.fr www.parc-cotentin-bessin.fr
Peaks, ridges, gorges and rocky escarpments of the Armorican Massif characterize the landscape of the Regional Park of Normandy-Maine. Watercourses, streams and rivers enliven the area with their force and score narrow valleys. The Mortain waterfalls and the site of the Fosse Arthour trench are witness to this force of nature. Covering 25% of the area’s surface, the woods and forest of the massif are interconnected by a vast network of hedges and orchards harbouring apple and pear. Between castles and historic cities, the area also stands out for its local products and country traditions: pear and apple brandies classified AOC, honey, shortbreads, milk products… a multitude of flavours to discover.
