a green valentine

9 A Healthy Start for 2012 a new year upon us, this is a good time to start new healthy habits and take inventory of your life.

When most of us think of health care we tend to think of health insurance or the ability to pay for the treatment of a major illness. But health care is not just a hot political topic, but the act of taking care of your health. It’s maintenance and prevention. It’s being proactive instead of reactive. It’s not waiting until something is wrong before you get help. Health care is also not limited to just our physical bodies, but also our mental and spiritual health, our relational health, our financial health and our occupational health.

By Janel Dear

3. Keep a prayer journal. This is a good way to put all those anxieties, or desires on paper. It’s also a great stress reliever.

1. Get a therapist. If you can’t seem to shake those holiday blues from last year, be proactive and consult a professional. Just as we get a yearly checkup for our physical health, it is wise to do the same for our mental and emotional health.

Financial Health

4. Exercise and diet. This is a popular one for the new year, but make it a reachable goal by removing one bad item from your diet and get your body moving.

Relational Health

1. Get the toxic folks out of your life. If the person is more of a liability than an asset, you may need to reevaluate the role of that person in your life. 2. Learn to say no. By setting (and keeping) healthy boundaries you greatly enhance your relationship experience. 3. Forgive 4. Get to know your neighbors. 5. Volunteer in your community.

Spiritual Health

1. Take a weekly day of sabbath. This is the one day where you turn everything off and tune everything out. If you can’t do a whole day then try at least an hour a day. 2. Schedule a personal retreat to your favorite place. This can be as simple as the chair in your living room or a beach in the Caribbean. The goal is to have a place where you can reflect and reevaluate what is important in life.

red velvet cheesecake

2. Take more risks or try something new.

Physical Health

3. Pick a dominant health issue or concern and address it head on. Instead of a long list of resolutions, pick one the most urgent matter and focus on it.

4

Mental/Emotional Health

3. Face a fear and overcome it. Just pick one that’s been a challenge and take steps to defeat it.

2. If you smoke, quit. The American Lung Association www.lungusa.org has several tips to help you quit.

3+

4. Fasting. Fasting from one meal or one favorite activity for a period of time is not only good for your health, but also for your soul.

The new year gives us a “tabula rasa,” the Latin word for clean slate, to start over and make a commitment to good health. Here are a few areas and suggestions to help you get started on your road to becoming the best version of you in 2012. 1. Make all health related appointments. By doing it the same time each year makes it easier to remember. Remember an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

total omega

4. Dream big and pull out that bucket list. Commit to checking off a few more this year and even adding a few more. 1. Get your credit report. Under the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACTS) you are entitled to a free copy of your credit report from all three reporting agencies every 12 months. You can check for inaccuracies, fraud or just to know your financial health. Go to www.annualcreditreport.com.

7 the healing power of laughter

2. Work on that emergency fund. Most experts recommend at least 6 months of living expenses. 3. Set financial goals to create wealth. Most of the time we focus on getting out of debt, but the more proactive mindset is to look at ways to create wealth. There are a plethora of books on the subject, so get started today.

8

4. Eliminate debt. One surefire way to hinder wealth creation is continual debt creation. Dave Ramsey has a simple way to start with the “Debt Snowball” at www.daveramsey.com 5. Create or update your will and create a living will. There are several templates online that can help you create your legal documents before you submit them to your attorney. Legal Zoom www.legalzoom.com is a great place to start.

Occupational Health

1. Update resume whether you are looking for a job or not. 2. Use social media to your advantage to network and keep in touch with those who can help you in career. 3. Sharpen interview and negotiation skills. 4. Learn a new skill in your industry to keep you competitive. 5. Turn that business idea into reality and write a business plan. 6. Get organized. The worse thing is to be presented with an opportunity of a lifetime and you’re not ready for it. Now the rest is up to you. Happy New Year!

body hances are you or someone that you know are stressed or are going through an emotional or mental challenge. You may feel stressed, depressed, angry, frustrated, lonely, fearful, anxious, constantly worrying, suicidal, grieving the loss of a loved one, or suffering from a physical or sexual assault. Your challenges may be recent or you may have been suffering for weeks, months, years, or decades. Most likely you have tried various methods to manage or cope with your problem. You may have attempted to resolve your problem with the help of a counselor, psychiatrist or psychologist. Your problems were discussed, analyzed and dissected in an attempt to get to the underlying cause, to hopefully find a solution. Or, you were merely comforted, counseled and taught various coping methods to deal with your problems. Prescriptions drugs may have been given with the intent of treating the symptoms as opposed to the root cause of the problems. You may have tried alternative healing methods such as Reiki, Emotional Freedom Techniques, and other forms of Energy Healing. You possibly even sought help in various religions and support groups. Hopefully, with these various methods you have been educated, given good advice, comforted, given insight into the nature of your problem and taught various coping techniques. Regardless, chances are good that the problem, along with the pain and suffering still exists. Throughout your journey you may have been told that time heals all wounds, but your wound remains as fresh as the day it was inflicted. Your coping methods may be helpful, but at times it is still a major undertaking to maintain your emotional equilibrium. You may have been told that you will eventually learn to live with your problems, but ongoing pain and suffering have been a very hard lesson to grasp. You may believe that what happened to you was so traumatic, so dreadful, so painful that no one could possibly completely recover. You might feel that for some reason you need or even deserve to be suffering. Meet Dr. Ceaser Hello, My name is Dr. Sheldon T. Ceaser M.D., and I have been practicing medicine in Chicago for over twenty-five years. If any of what I have just mentioned is true for you, or anyone that you know, I am writing this message to let you know that I can help you. Unfortunately, 

e have been conditioned to accept day-to-day stresses as being W normal; They are not!

 We have been conditioned to believe that there is a certain length of time that one must grieve and suffer; There is not!

 We have been conditioned to believe that there are various stages of grief that one must go through after the loss of a love one; Only if you want to go through the painfulness of it!

 We have grown accustomed to managing our stresses and problems as opposed to working towards the most desirable alternative; The complete elimination of our stresses and the emotional impact that our problems have created in us!

Help Is On The Way You have suffered long enough with your problems, the time has come to rid yourself of them completely and permanently. If you were to arrange a consultation with me, I guarantee, I promise, that I will eliminate any emotional or mental problem to your satisfaction, or your visit is free. The claim may seem unbelievable and naturally, you may be skeptical. It is human nature to be skeptical at first, but it is not human nature to choose to suffer needlessly. I will eliminate your problem in one session or multiple sessions if there are multiple problems. When you leave my office you will feel as if a tremendous burden has been lifted.

The Offer The reason I offer the guarantee is twofold. The first reason is that I am extremely confident in my abilities and I stand behind every word that I have just written. The second reason is that there are many people with good intentions and even some with bad intentions that make claims that they are unable to fulfill. I have been to them myself and have paid for their services, as you may have too. Most of the time we have both left, either less than satisfied, or sorely disappointed. Your satisfaction is extremely important to me. If you are not satisfied I do not want you to pay anything! You may be wondering, how I am going to do this, and whether it involves that you believe anything. Several years ago, I discovered that I had a natural ability; a gift, to almost instantly, treat various emotional and mental problems. I have labored four to eight hours daily over the past seven years, developing my abilities, to reach the point where I can confidently back-up the above mentioned claims. I have helped many, including skeptics, to overcome unspeakable challenges. The only thing that you will need to do is speak positive affirmative phrases to yourself, and I will do the rest. In conclusion, there is absolutely no reason for you to suffer or hold on to your problems another day. Call today to make an appointment and put an end to your misery.

H

eart disease has been the leading cause of death in the U.S. for the last 80 years. Close to 27 million Americans have heart disease today, and 20 million people per day take statin medications for elevated cholesterol. Research shows that a healthy diet, exercise, and reducing risk factors such as smoking and lowering cholesterol, is your best medicine whether you have heart disease, a family history of heart disease, or you just want to maintain a healthy heart. Fish oil has been extensively studied for its cardiovascular benefits. There is an inverse relationship between fish consumption and cardiovascular disease. Total Omega 3+ is an antioxidant infused fish oil that provides the necessary nutrients to support heart health.

What Makes Total Omega 3+ Unique

Total Omega 3+ is a pharmaceutical grade, triple molecularly distilled fish oil. Molecular distillation is a purification process that eliminates heavy metals (mercury, cadmium, lead), dioxins, PCB’s and other harmful toxins from the fish oil. This process guarantees the fish oil to be ultrapure. Molecular distillation is safe and provides a stable fish oil with less odor, less rancidity, and less oxidation. Total Omega 3+ ultra-pure fish oil is then infused with Coq10, Vitamin K2, Vitamin D3, and Vitamin E.

Calcium and the Role of Vitamin K2

Calcification of the arteries is one of the hallmarks of cardiovascular disease. Calcium builds up in the arteries creating plaques that stiffen the blood vessels and decrease their elasticity. This plaque formation increases the risk of clot formation, heart attack and stroke. A recent study in the British Medical Journal showed an increase risk of heart attacks in women taking calcium supplements! This paradox suggests that calcium is not effectively utilized by the body to build strong bones and instead, it accumulates in the arteries leading to heart disease.

Vitamin K2 acts as a tour guide for calcium. Vitamin K2 attaches to calcium in the blood and in the arterial walls and directs it to the bones. This helps to reverse the process of cardiovascular disease while strengthening

the bones and preventing osteoporosis. A double victory!

Vitamin D3 Deficiency and Heart Disease

Vitamin D deficiency is associated with increased cardiovascular risk, and research suggests it is a better predictor of heart attack and stroke than other established markers of heart disease, like cholesterol and lipid levels. The higher risk associated with vitamin D deficiency was particularly evident among individuals with high blood pressure. Upwards of 75% of all Americans have low Vitamin D levels.

Vitamin E as Tocomin Suprabio Vitamin E as Tocomin Suprabio is a natural full spectrum tocotrienol/ tocopherol complex concentrated

from virgin palm oil via a patented mild extraction process which ensures maximum preservation of the phytonutrients. Tocomin Suprabio has been studied extensively for its cardioprotective effects which include restoring healthy cholesterol levels, improving the integrity of the arterial system, and positively influencing systolic blood pressure. Historically tocotrienols are very poorly absorbed; however the bioenhanced oral delivery system of the Tocomin Suprabio creates a self-emulsifying delivery system that guarantees oral absorption of tocotrienols by as much as 300%!

Benefits of CoQ10

CoQ10 has a profound effect on cardiovascular health. Most people are unaware that statin medications deplete CoQ10 levels in our body which weakens our heart and increases the likelihood of heart failure. The American Heart Association recommends supplementing CoQ10 in patients taking statin medications to support their cardiovascular health.

Popular “Sports Doc” Chiropractor Enjoys Home Field Advantage in New Oak Lawn Office ches, pains, and nagging injuries don’t stop pickup gamers, schoolyard hoopsters, fairway addicts, and weekend warriors across the south suburbs from indulging in their favorite pastimes. When they feel a sudden twinge, tweak, or sore spot, they simply pay a quick visit to “sports doc” Rory Marrell and before long, they’re back in the game.

What Makes Platinum Chiropractic Different From The Rest Among the plentiful reasons that keep them coming back to Dr. Marrello and his Platinum Chiropractic practice are: (1) the CCSP after his name, which stands for Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician; and (2) his new convenient office location near 111th St. and Cicero Ave. in Oak Lawn.

The former is no trifling abbreviation. Dr. Marrello is the only known chiropractor in the south suburbs with CCSP credentials — which indicates that he trained nearly a year longer than a regular chiropractor and specializes in treating athletes and sportsrelated injuries. It’s a big reason why he’s in such high demand among amateur ball clubs and competitors in the area, including baseball and softball squads with Westside Baseball of Oak Lawn, and Victory Martial Arts in Orland Park. And now, it’s even easier for coaches, players, and non-athletes alike to see Dr. Marrello, since he moved his solo practice in August to a larger space and more accessible address at 11008 S. Cicero.

“...a chiropractic physician believes in safe, non-invasive, non-habit-forming means of therapy that produce lasting results.”

By Erik Martin

“Having a larger facility allows me to better serve my patients and offer a more convenient, easy-to-reach locale,” said Dr. Marrello, who formerly shared an office with another chiropractor near 103rd and Central in Oak Lawn. “My goal was always to remain in Oak Lawn, where I first opened Platinum Chiropractic back in 2007. This is a town I’ve known and loved for years, and there’s an increasingly strong demand for chiropractic care from patients in and around this area.”

Chiropractic Care is for Everyone

In addition to sports enthusiasts young and old, Dr. Marrello’s clients include “a lot of hardworking local people in physically demanding professions, such as firefighters, police officers, and construction workers,” he said. “Pain and injuries aren’t exclusive to athletes. We get plenty of white and blue collar workers and who come in after throwing out their backs, pulling a muscle on the job, or waking up stiff after engaging in strenuous activity the day before.”

Full Range of Services Available Among the services and techniques available to Platinum Chiropractic patients are: Adjustments Massage therapy Acupuncture therapy Ultrasound treatment Inter-segmental traction to treat spinal conditions Flexion distraction to treat injured discs of the lower back

Kinesio-taping Electrical muscle stimulation Cold laser treatment Therapeutic exercises Custom foot orthotics X-ray and MRI diagnostic tests

Dispelling the Myths about Chiropractic Care

Dr. Marrello noted there are a lot of common misconceptions about chiropractors that keep many of the walking wounded from seeking treatment. “We’re often thought of as back-andneck crackers who put bones back in place,” he said. “Actually, chiropractors deal more with the muscles surrounding joints, not just the joint. We’re musculoskeletal specialists who can often provide immediate relief of pain and discomfort.” A medical doctor, he continued, “will often prescribe painkiller medications and surgery, but a chiropractic physician believes in safe, non-invasive, non-habit-forming means of therapy that produce lasting results.”

aughter is a free wonder drug that can help with stress management, boost your immunity and be a welcome distraction to life’s challenges. According to William Fry, M.D. at Sanford School of Medicine, children in kindergarten on an average laugh about 400 times a day. By the time we are adults that average drops to about 4-6 times a day. Clearly, as we age, we need to bring more laughter into our lives. But laughter does more than just bring a smile to our face. Laughter can also heal. There are many benefits to laughter and your next chuckle is as close as your next You Tube video. The Benefits of Laughter Reduces stress – Have you noticed when you laugh you automatically relax more. It’s hard to stay tense and laugh at the same time. Studies show that daily laughter can help counter damaging stress hormones by releasing the health-promoting ones such as endorphins and neurotransmitters and suppressing two stress

Improves social interaction – Laughter is naturally contagious. A recent study showed that people laugh six times more in the presence of one other person and 30 times more in the presence of a group. While we do laugh alone, we often laugh harder and longer when we are with others. Funny people are more approachable. Laughing or smiling makes you appear more friendly and therefore more approachable. Without fail, one of the top attributes men and women find attractive in a partner, is a sense of humor.

Gives perspective in negative circumstances – Unfortunately bad things happen to good people, and a sudden change in circumstances can leave you reeling. Laughter helps keep the big picture in mind. It can be a much welcome distraction, and many times just the simple act of smiling can give you hope that things will get better. Reduces pain – There is a growing belief that humor helps reduce pain. Many hospitals are now adding humor rooms, which promotes the use of humor to help in the recovery process. Studies in the Journal of Holistic Nursing support this claim and many patients noticed a reduction or elimination of pain when preceded by laughter.

Builds immune system Laughter helps produce hormones which aids in building the body’s immune system. Researchers at Loma Linda University, found that

Our bodies use more resources during the cold weather just to keep warm! As a result, we have less resources to bolster our immunse system during winter months. How can we keep our immune system happy? 1. Get plenty of rest. The first challenge of the colder months is adjusting to daylight savings time, so use this extra hour of sleep to rest and recover. 2. Make sure you are eating plenty of nutritous foods to keep your antioxidant levels up. If you don’t have time to eat 6 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables daily, substitute with a good multi-vitamin 3. Get adjusted. As strange as it sounds, chiropractic adjustments to the thoracic spine increase levels of white blood cells in the blood over the course of 4 hours. This can translate to a super-charged immune system for 4 hours at a time! 4. Drink plenty of fluids. It is easy to get dehydrated during the winter since the air is much drier. Staying hydrated can help flush out viruses before they have a chance to take hold in our bodies. Follow these guidelines for a healthy start to the New Year! Best wishes to our readers for a bright and healthy 2012!!

Massage for Holiday Stress

The

Holiday season brings joy and happiness to millions of Americans each year. However, with all of the festivities and gift giving comes, the long checkout lines, gridlock traffic, and not to mention opening your post-holiday Visa bill. How do you deal with all the stress that has been mounting for the last couple of months? Well, the answer seems to be an ancient one. Massage has been used by the Chinese for centuries and just now western research is confirming the effects of massage on the body. One of the most well known and utilized effects of massage is the stress relieving effect it has on a person’s body. Massage creates chemical changes that reduce pain and stress. One way it does this is by reducing a brain chemical called substance P and releasing endorphins, the body’s natural pain killer. According to a Newsweek article on the five benefits of massage, it is not the type of massage that is important but the act of massage itself. Furthermore, massage may actually help boost immunity. Many studies have measured the stress hormone Cortisol before and after massage and have found dramatic decreases. Cortisol, which is produced when

you are stressed, kills cells important for immunity. So next time you get a massage it may help you avoid getting a cold. Massage is not a complex medical procedure that requires specialized equipment and a doctor’s degree. Anyone can learn to do simple and effective massage, for their partner or even

on themselves. Nowadays there is a variety of massage instruction DVDs for beginners or even amateur instructors on You Tube providing excellent advice. If you are not the do-it-yourselfer then there is plenty of massage therapists out there that can even do in home visits. When speaking of massage it is necessary to speak of massage oils and the added benefits they can have on your body. Massage oils can be daunting by the sheer number of options that are available but I will go through some of the most common and useful ones to guide you in making your shopping experience not a stress factor. When starting out, you might want to look at Sweet Almond Oil; it is one of the most popular massage oils among massage therapists. This oil is absorbed by the skin leaving it feeling refreshed and moisturized while allowing hands to glide easily. If you have a nut allergy then you might want to use Apricot Kernel Oil as an alternative. This oil is similar to sweet almond oil but it is rich in vitamin E and has a longer shelf life. Sunflower Oil is another alternative that is nongreasy and won’t leave skin feeling oily. The oil, extracted from sunflower seeds, is rich in the essential fatty acid linoleic acid, as well as palmitic acid and stearic acid, all components of healthy skin. The amount of linoleic acid in skin declines with age and can be stripped by harsh soaps and cleansers. Sunflower oil can go rancid quickly, so it should be purchased in small quantities and stored in a dark cool area. Squeezing one or two capsules of pure vitamin E oil into the bottle may help to extend the shelf life. Now that you know more about massage therapy, give it a try. Go for it and experience so many of the benefits that are associated with it.

Saving Healthcare Dollars by Preventing Back Pain: Q&A With Dr. Jeff Winternheimer of Illinois Back Institute

Up

wards of $100 billion is spent every year on treating back pain, which contributes to a large amount of the overall healthcare dollars spent in the United States. Looking into the future, a huge emphasis will be placed on lowering the cost of care in all areas, especially back pain management. “The overall education to patients about how they need to live their life to take better care of their spine is lacking,” says Jeff Winternheimer, DC, founder of Illinois Back Institute. “There are things people do every day to perpetuate back pain and that comes at a great cost.” At the Illinois Back Institute, Dr. Winternheimer and his colleagues are now engaged in a public health campaign, The Billion Dollar Back Cure, to spread the word about back pain prevention and appropriate treatment. He discusses the key issues surrounding back pain management and how

medical providers can guide patients to appropriate, cost-effective care. Q: What trends are you seeing in your practice regarding back pain treatment? JW: We often see more than 250 patients per month and close to 3,000 chronic patients per year, and none of them have been taught that extended periods of time of flexion will hurt their backs. These people have been to other physicians, chiropractors and therapists and nobody has taught them how to lift, bend or stretch their backs appropriately. People sit too long during the day; they sit at their desks at work, sit in the car driving home and sit to watch TV during the evenings. Sitting too much can be bad for the back, so if we educate patients on simple therapeutic life changes, we can prevent some serious problems. Q: How does The Billion Dollar Back Cure campaign aim to spread awareness of these issues?

JW: We have a website where we publish articles about tips for preventing back pain. We have also been on TV talking about these tips. It’s a grass roots push for public awareness and next spring, we are going to start a campaign working with physicians to supply them with material they can pass along to their patients. The biggest problem with a therapeutic lifestyle is it requires education and physicians don’t always have time to sit with patients and explain these simple tactics to them. If we give physicians a tool they can easily give to their patients, the patients will know how to treat their backs. Q: What challenges do you expect to encounter with this campaign? JW: We are asking people to change their lifestyle; it’s the fundamental idea that there are simple things you can do for yourself to eliminate chronic back pain and the fear of back pain. It’s never easy to get people

to change their habits. However, physicians have influence over their patients and if physicians say they should change their lifestyles, patients are more likely to do so. Physicians can give patients the handouts and recommend they watch our film on back pain prevention, but there also has to be some sort of follow up. The physician or nurse should call and ask if they understand the concepts to avoid prolonged flexion. If physicians have the right tools, they can educate their patients and follow up with them to prevent some of the serious back pain cases we see today. For More Information Illinois Back Institute has locations throughout Illinois in Arlington Heights, Wheaton, Berwyn, Countryside and Orland Park.
