Finishing Well As we approach the end of 2011, take this time to finish something well , the holiday season. This time of year elicits either a response of dread, or squeals of joy. This is the season of harvest, where we reap the fruits of our labor from the previous year. It is a time of reflection and self-evaluation. We all start the year full of hope and resolutions. We have had our lofty, if at times, overambitious goals that, by June, have completely fallen by the wayside. hen we think of our final days on earth, most of us would like to be surrounded by loved ones, in a familiar place. It is no surprise that we would rather be at home or a homelike environment, than in a sterile hospital or nursing home. Hospice care was designed to do just that, provide patients with quality end-of-life care. What is Hospice Care?
The word hospice is derived from the Latin word hospitium meaning guest house. Originally defined as a place where sick and weary travelers found help, hospice care as we know it, started in London in the 1960s by Dr. Cicely Saunders. The first hospice facility in the United States was established in New Haven, Connecticut in 1974 and today there are an estimated 4,700 hospice programs in America. Hospice has come to be recognized as a place for end-of-life care where the purpose is for palliative care, to ease suffering and give comfort, when there is no cure. This care can be received in a patient’s home, or in a freestanding hospice facility. Contrary to popular belief, a hospice is not a place where you go when there is “nothing else to be done.” In fact, hospice care can be viewed as another form of treatment when dealing with terminally ill patients. The purpose of hospice care is to provide pain management, comfort, and care in a soothing environment. Hospice care also extends to offering assistance to the caregiver and family of the patient. Additionally, hospice professionals believe that when family members (including children) experience the dying process in a caring environment, it helps counteract the fear of their own mortality and the mortality of their loved one.

to the forms patients sign when they enter a hospital. The Hospice Team Hospice care does not depend upon one person, but a collective team of caring individuals committed to the care and comfort of the patient. This team is designed to help with the physical, emotional, and spiritual care of the patient and loved ones. They make themselves available during the final stages of life, the passing, and the transitional support and care for the surviving loved ones. The goal is to keep the patient as pain-free as possible, until death. The team usually consists of: P ersonal physician C lergy or other counselors F amily and Friends Nurses H ome health aides H ospice physician (or medical director) S peech, physical, and occupational therapists, if needed It is important to map out a plan of care with members of the hospice team to determine what each member’s role will be, and when it will be needed, especially if the care will be in the home of the patient. Each member is a vital part of the patient’s support system, and ensures a quality end-of-life experience.
Your hospice team can provide a much needed support system.

When should you consider hospice care for a loved one?
One of the first things the hospice program will do is contact the patient’s physician to make sure he or she agrees that hospice care is appropriate for this patient at this time. (Most hospices have medical staff available to help patients who have no physician.) The patient will be asked to sign consent and insurance forms. These are similar

Some of the duties the hospice team is responsible for includes: P ain management Emotional support E ducating loved ones on how to care for the person M aking short-term inpatient care available when pain or symptoms become too difficult to manage at home, or the caregiver needs respite time
P roviding grief support to surviving loved ones and friends Support can also include conversations with the person and family members, caregiving skills, prayer, telephone calls to loved ones, assisting with household chores or errands, companionship and help from volunteers. Counseling for the person and loved ones are an important part of hospice care. After the person’s death, bereavement support is offered to families for at least one year. These services can take a variety of forms, from written materials about grieving, support groups, individual counseling and calls.
Paying for Hospice Care
Hospice is paid for through the Medicare Hospice Benefit, Medicaid Hospice Benefit, and most private insurers. If a person does not have coverage through Medicare, Medicaid or a private insurance company, the hospice will work with the person and their family to ensure needed services can be provided. What Does Medicare Cover?
These are the core services Medicare covers and pays nearly all of their costs. Running Along The Marathon Road In The Footsteps Of The Men Before Him
As
part of its fundraising efforts, this year the Hellenic Foundation was proud to participate in the Bank of America, Chicago Marathon 2011, to raise money for its Psychotherapy & Counseling Charitable Fund. This fund allows individuals and families who are in need of assistance, yet lack the financial resources, to engage and participate in the therapeutic process. Hellenic Foundation’s cause has a particular connection to the marathon since in life, just as runners in a marathon, the individuals the organization serve, learn to persevere through challenges and obstacles and to accept support along the way. Last month, Hellenic Foundation welcomed on its team, 15 marathon runners from Greece, who were proud to help raise money for its cause. Below is an interview (conducted in May 2011) of Vlassis Karavasilis, founder of the Telmissos Runner Team, who traveled 5,500 miles from Greece to Chicago to run in the marathon and support the Hellenic Foundation’s cause. Born to Run
I have had the pleasure, over the last few months, to communicate with the founder of the Telmissos Runners Organization. Vlassis Karavasilis, who formed his
Quote: “Running a long distance takes you away from false values and brings you in tou inner self,” Karavasilis says. runner’syour organization in 2007, has taken part in 18 Classic Marathons and over 35 marathons in Greece and other countries. We discussed his love of running, how it all began, and his personal life philosophy. Vlassis Karavasilis is a man of character and resolve. His love of Greek culture and history brought tears to my eyes throughout our conversation. I felt such a connection to this pioneer! I am looking forward to meeting him and know that Marathon Week 2011 will be the beginning of a long relationship, a kinship if you will, between the people of Marathon and Chicago! Karavasilis said that he was born to run. He explained how he was an energetic child who used to run around the town of Marathon. He was always interested in sports, yet there were not many opportunities in his town: no stadiums and no gyms to help a young boy channel this energy. He was inspired by his grandfather, who took Karavasilis by the hand at the young age of nine and walked with him on the Peace Walk from Marathon to Athens. Although his first love was, cycling (in which he won several awards as a young teenager), he was inspired by his older brother, who was in the Greek multi-sport club Panellinios Gymnastikos
Running a long distance takes you away from false values and brings you in touch with your inner self,” Karavasilis says.
Syllogos and ran his first marathon at 19. Karavasilis followed in his footsteps, signed up in a sport club, and started distance running. When Karavasilis was 19, he, like his brother, ran his first marathon. At that race, while running to Kalimarmaro Stadium in Athens, he cut an olive branch in Marathonas in honor of his grandfather. His spleen was hurting during the race, and although the paramedics wanted to take him to the hospital, thoughts of his grandfather and the ancient runners before him inspired him to persevere and reach his goal. According to Karavasilis, running is the most sacred of sports: it gives the runner a respect for nature, while clearing one’s mind and testing one’s stamina and psychological limits. “Running a long distance takes you away from false values and brings you in touch with your inner self,” Karavasilis says. He and I agree that running a marathon is also a metaphor for life: “It is no coincidence that the ancient Greeks considered runners’ achievements glorious,” Karavasilis adds. And, the journey
towards self – discovery is what Hellenic Foundation is all about. To have Vlassis Karavasilis and his team of runners coming to Chicago to run for our cause, is especially symbolic of the Ancient Greek spirit to persevere, and take the steps to victory and peace. At Hellenic Foundation, this is the philosophy we embrace as we assist individuals and families we serve, in the steps they take on the road to an emotionally healthy life. Vlassis Karavasilis was pictured on the front page of the Chicago Tribune the day after the race, Monday, October 9, 2011. He came in 259 out of 45,000 runners. Karavasilis and his team helped to raise $20,040 for Hellenic Foundation’s Psychotherapy & Counseling Charitable Fund. Join the Team If you would like to run with Hellenic Foundation’s team in next year’s marathon to help with this worthy cause, please contact Sophia Stamatis, Director of Development & Marketing at 773.631.5222, ext. 108 or email sstamatis@hellenicfoundation.org

Molecular distillation is a purification process that eliminates heavy metals (mercury, cadmium, lead), dioxins, PCB’s and other harmful toxins from the fish oil. This process guarantees the fish oil to be ultra- pure. Molecular distillation is safe and provides a stable fish oil with less odor, less rancidity, and less oxidation. We then infuse our ultra-pure fish oil with Coq10, Vitamin K2, Vitamin D3, and Vitamin E. CoQ10 has a profound effect on cardiovascular health. Most people are unaware that statin medications deplete CoQ10 levels in our body which weakens our heart and increases the likelihood of heart failure. statin medications to support their cardiovascular health. Calcification of the arteries is one of the hallmarks of cardiovascular disease. Calcium builds up in the arteries creating plaques that stiffen the blood vessels and decrease their elasticity. This plaque formation increases the risk of clot formation, heart attack and stroke. A recent study in the British Medical Journal showed an increase risk of heart attacks in women taking calcium supplements! This paradox suggests that calcium is not effectively utilized by the body to build strong bones and instead it accumulates in the arteries leading to heart disease. Vitamin K2 acts as a tour guide for calcium. Vitamin K2 attaches to calcium in the blood and in the arterial walls and directs it to the bones. This helps to reverse the

Mini Dental Implants: An innovative and affordable way to a better smile Why Chose Mini Implants?
Are
you embarrassed to eat in public? Do your dentures fall out when you laugh? Are you forced to eat soft foods and have to avoid foods you love? Loose or ill fitting dentures can create a real social problem for denture wearers. Not only does it affect your social life, but it can also affect your health. Food that is not chewed correctly and completely can cause digestive problems. Let’s face it, there is simply too much good food to enjoy, to allow loose fitting dentures to control your life! Even the best denture adhesives can’t compare to the denture stability achieved with mini dental implants. Mini dental implants are designed to help denture wearers laugh, talk and live with comfort and confidence!
What is the MDI Mini Implant System?
The MDI Mini Implant System is a minimally invasive, affordable dental implant procedure that can provide the denture stability you have always wanted-without the costs and time associated with full-size implants. Smaller than full-size implants, mini dental implants are inserted to retain and stabilize your dentures. This simple procedure is done in our office under local anesthetic and can be completed in less than 2 hours! We use a precise
and controlled technique to insert the mini-implant. This procedure differs from the placement of standard full-size implants in that it can be inserted right through your gum. This means a much shorter healing period, which means you can get back to eating, laughing and LIFE right away. One of the best things about the MDI Mini-Implant System is that it can be used with your existing denture, a simple modification of your denture is all that is needed for the MDI system to work. This makes the system even more affordable! If you are unhappy with the appearance, wear or color of your existing denture, you can chose to have a new denture made as well. However, it is not necessary to replace your existing denture. If you are happy with your denture, other than the fit, by all means keep it. The modifications made to your denture are completely safe and will not decrease the strength, nor compromise the integrity of your denture in any way. Mini implants are so easy to take care of. Simply brushing them with an ultra-soft brush is all that is needed to remove any food or debris that may accumulate around them. Because of the minimally invasive nature of the mini-implant procedure, the MDI placement won’t require you to go through a lengthy healing period. In fact, many of our patients have reported
One of the best things about the MDI Mini-Implant System is that it can be used with your existing denture minimal to no discomfort following the procedure. We do prescribe an anti-inflammatory (NSAID) prior to surgery and will continue the course of medication after surgery. The use of anti-inflammatory medications in conjunction with icing the area after the procedure will greatly reduce the pain and inflammation. You can wear your denture immediately after the procedure and in fact. it is important that you do so for the next 24-48 hours. A simple exam and x-ray is all that is needed to see if you are a candidate. This appointment is being offered at NO CHARGE! So there really is no reason for you not to make the call. Within a few days of your procedure you’ll be out and about, enjoying your favorite foods, talking with ease, laughing and smiling freely. All that time, you’re feeling a new stability in your dentures! Now what could be better than that? ADA 065-04 DNP Eng 7x10

mind Not sure about counseling? Maybe a dog can help. Therapy dogs offer an alternative to traditional therapies
A
lthough people have cherished companion animals throughout history, it was in the 1960’s when the field of animal assisted therapy was born. A child psychologist, Boris Levinson, discovered that the presence of his dog, Jingles, helped a non-verbal child to communicate. Normally he put his dog in another room while seeing patients, but a patient showed up early one day and began interacting with and talking to the dog. The child was able to connect with the animal quickly and without the anxiety that characterized the prior month of speech therapy sessions with the doctor. Levinson believed that working with Jingles as his co-therapist, fostered an environment of trust and healing, and continued to use dogs in his work. On its most basic level, contact with therapy dogs can decrease stress by lowering blood pressure, slowing heart rate and reducing stress hormones. Endorphins, or chemicals in the brain that relieve pain and discomfort, are released when petting a therapy dog. Studies have shown that exposure to a therapy dog has a beneficial effect on people, decreasing anxiety and loneliness. Therapy dogs also offer comfort and non-judgmental love. Today therapy dogs work in a wide variety of settings, including schools, hospitals, libraries, prisons and shelters. Meet Ninja Ninja is a registered therapy dog, having completed a training program to bolster her natural therapeutic abilities. A rescued dog who now helps others, she offers her services along with her owner, Christy Lindquist, in a variety of healthcare settings. Lindquist and Ninja also work together in a private counseling practice in the Lakeview neighborhood of Chicago. Ninja is the favorite of a young teen with Asperger’s Syndrome, a developmental disorder that limits a person’s ability to socialize and communicate. It is often characterized by social awkwardness. “I like sessions with Ninja because I get to pet her and she feels good. She’s happy to see me,” he says. In sessions, the dog is used to facilitate communication and to increase empathy. For example, the client is asked to get the dog to knock over six cups using his voice, body language, and treats. Because dogs are non-verbal, simply telling her what to do doesn’t work, and this quickly becomes obvious. Through trial and error, both the client and the dog are excited when they succeed. Processing the exercise afterwards, the
client and therapist are equals when it comes to puzzling over what the dog was thinking at various points. Since neither can say with certainty what is going on in a dog’s mind, this can yield fruitful discussions about how we interpret the actions of others. Other clients enjoy petting her during sessions, while talking about painful events, and while doing mindfulness exercises. Ninja is happy to sit by a client, lay on the couch, or, for people who don’t want the attention, to lie on the floor. “In my work with adults,
I don’t give Ninja a lot of direction. She seems to sense what my clients need,” says Lindquist. “I started becoming interested in using dogs in therapy because of my own experiences with them. Dogs have always been part of my life, and they have helped me so much.” Christy Lindquist is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor who sees adults and adolescents who are dealing with depression, anxiety, trauma and stress. COLD & FLU Flu Shots Vs. Natural
tend to be more vulnerable and more seriously affected than most. Don’t Be Fooled! It is common knowledge that over the counter drugs that target colds or flu have the ability to temporarily relieve symptoms. Antibiotics, on the other hand, are clearly ineffective with the flu, but even so, some doctors feel pressured to prescribe drugs to placate the demands of their patients. preparing for the cold and flu season, proceed with caution It’s rare to find a person who has not experienced the wrath of the flu at some point in their life. Typically the flu arrives quickly and lasts for approximately a week, unless a secondary bacterial infection occurs, such as bronchitis or pneumonia. This lower respiratory infection increases the duration and intensity of the discomfort. The symptoms of influenza are fever, malaise, sore throat, myalgia, chills, fatigue, pharyngitis, a nonproductive cough, headaches, rhinorrhea, and muscle pain. If it develops into influenza pneumonia, your symptoms also include frothy white, and sometimes blood tinged sputum, chest pain, and of course, more coughing. As with most viral conditions, the young and the old
Should I Get the Flu Vaccine? VACCINES WILL NEVER PREVENT THE FLU. They weaken the immune system and in fact, make you more likely to get it. They are not the answer! When you challenge the doctor on why NOT to get the vaccine, he quotes the statistical and demographical explanations to justify immunization. Many of the statistics represent poor studies that identify only what serves the industry, and satiates the minds of those who lined up for the shot. If we look at the number of deaths from the flu, we must also recognize that most of those who die are already sick. It is clear that the flu vaccine does little to protect you from the flu. Do You Really Want to be “Shot”? Both the injected vaccine and the FluMist vaccine contain toxins whose cumulative effect is alarming! They commonly contain ethylene
glycol, which is antifreeze, phenols that are known as carbolic acid, used in disinfectants and dyes, formaldehyde which is cancer causing, aluminum that is associated with Alzheimer’s disease and seizures, and thimerosal which is a mercury disinfectant and preservative that is known to cause brain injury and autoimmune disease. There continues to be numbers of cause and effect connections between flu vaccines and immune disorders such as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, Multiple Sclerosis, asthma, etc. Is it worth the risk? The Solution The raging flu epidemics occur not because of a lack of flu vaccine but rather because of the state of our inner terrain. We are an immune-compromised society, in addition to being chemically immune-suppressed. Dr. Leonard G. Horowitz says that “the major source of weakened immunity has been drug side effects and vaccine induced toxicity which creates autoimmunity problems. “ No statement could be truer. With a diligently applied nutritional supplement regime and lifestyle changes, you can ward off the flu if you don’t have it, and alleviate the symptoms of the flu if you do have it. Nature has provided us with an arsenal of plants and natural substances to aid in boosting our immunity.
Eliminating sugar from the diet is the single most important factor when trying to avoid the flu. This includes junk food, grains, processed meats, processed packaged foods, white flour and fast foods. Get plenty of rest and reduce your stress load. Sunshine and fresh air greatly enhance the immune system. Eat organic when possible, especially animal protein. Supplement with Royal Flora SBOs to provide live soil-based organisms found originally in our food years ago, but are now missing!

hough figuring out just what to get Aunt Myrtle or a nephew for the holidays may seem impossible, choosing a gift that’s environmentally friendly doesn’t have to be. Purchase fewer, but higher quality, durable goods that will last longer and reduce the amount of waste ending up in landfills. And when wrapping up the perfect toy, remember to buy rechargeable batteries if it’s electronic. Information on disposing of batteries is available at www.rbrc.org. Collection sites are often available at major retailers. Missouri Department of Natural Resources www.dnr.mo.gov
