first step to recovery from the long road of addiction is to admit that you have a problem. Once you have made that initial move, the possibilities of a new and productive life are within reach. To those who have stuck it out and stayed clean for years, and to the people just starting on their journey, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) applauds you for your actions.

On October 30th of this year Smith-Clark will celebrate 11 years of sobriety. Now she counsels people whose position she was once in. “It’s a beautiful experience to partake in helping another potential lost soul get this thing called recovery, and actually get a new lease on life,” she says.

According to the organization’s Web site the 30-day event promotes the societal benefits of treatment for substance use and mental disorders, celebrates people in recovery, lauds the contributions of dedicated treatment providers, and promotes the message that recover in all its forms is possible. National Recovery Month spreads the positive message that behavioral health is essential to overall health, that prevention works, treatment is effective, and that people can – and do – recover.

Rick Williams, Partners in Treatment Counseling Services No one plans to put him or herself in a position to where they have to “recover” from abusing a substance. Research suggests that there is no one factor that can determine whether or not a person will become addicted to drugs or alcohol.Full The National Institute on Drug Page Ad Chicago Walks.indd 1 Abuse reports that scientists estimate that genetic factors account for between 40 to 60 percent of a person’s vulnerability to addiction. Being courageous enough to battle a substance addiction is a fight that is carried out on a daily basis. Sheila Smith-Clark knows this from first-hand experience. Her substance abuse began in 1984 with alcohol. She was later introduced to crack. After serving a couple of prison terms and going in and out of seven treatment centers, Smith-Clark realized she had one of two choices to make – “keep smoking and die, or get some help.”

“Changing your environment is a big thing because it can be very influential. If you keep going into the same environment you’re eventually going take advantage of the things that are there.” To the person trying to kick the habit by themselves Williams suggests seeking help and support from others. “You’re more prone to relapse when you’re doing it on your own. Get treatment and join some type of fellowship. A lot of people’s belief systems are different. Fellowship can be church, or it can be a 12-step program such as AA (Alcoholics Anonymous), NA (Narcotics Anonymous) or a group for whatever addiction you have.” For information on drug and alcohol treatment programs visit the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration Web site at www.findtreatment.samhsa.gov. Recovery is achievable. You just have to take it one day at a time.

hiropractic is a branch of the healing arts which is based upon the understanding that good health depends, in part, upon a normally functioning nervous system (especially the spine, and the nerves extending from the spine to all parts of the body). “Chiropractic” comes from the Greek word chiropraktikos, meaning “effective treatment by hand.” Chiropractic stresses the idea that the cause of many disease processes begins with the body’s inability to adapt to its environment. It looks to address these diseases not by the use of drugs and chemicals, but by locating and adjusting a musculoskeletal area of the body which is functioning improperly. The conditions which doctors of chiropractic address are as varied and as vast as the nervous system itself. All chiropractors use a standard procedure of examination to diagnose a patient’s condition and arrive at a course of treatment. Doctors of chiropractic use the same time-honored methods of consultation, case history, physical examination, laboratory analysis and x-ray examination as any other doctor. In addition, they provide a careful chiropractic structural examination, paying particular attention to the spine. The examination of the spine to evaluate structure and function is what makes chiropractic different from other health care procedures. Your spinal column is a series of movable bones which begin at the base of your skull and end in the center of your hips. Thirty-one pairs of spinal nerves extend down the spine from the brain and exit through a series of openings. The nerves leave the spine and form

a complicated network which influences every living tissue in your body. Accidents, falls, stress, tension, overexertion, and countless other factors can result in small shifts of the spinal column, causing irritation to spinal nerve roots. These irritations are often what cause malfunctions in the human body. Chiropractic teaches that reducing or eliminating this irritation to spinal nerves can cause your body to operate more efficiently and more comfortably. However, that’s not to say that chiropractic is limited to the back and neck. Dr. Rory Marrello is welleducated in the treatment of more than just back pain. Have you had problems with your knees, shoulders, ankles, wrists or other joints? Call and see what our office can offer you. Dr. Marrello is a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician, a certified acupuncturist and Kinesiotape practitioner. Dr. Marrello utilizes cold laser therapy and ultrasound as necessary, and we have a wonderful massage therapist on staff. Chiropractic also places an emphasis on nutritional and exercise programs, wellness and lifestyle modifications for promoting physical and mental health. While chiropractors make no use of drugs or surgery, doctors of chiropractic do refer patients for medical care when those interventions are indicated. In fact, chiropractors, medical doctors, physical therapists and other health care professionals now work as partners in occupational health, sports medicine, and a wide variety of other rehabilitation practices. The Miracle Of Fresh Fruits & Vegetables by Tanya Doris, BSN & Errol S. Doris CNHP Managers of A Choice For Life, Inc., Holistic Wellness Center

T

here is one thing we should understand as parents. If you do not introduce a child to consuming fruits and veggies at a very impressionable age, it becomes impossible to get them to eat them throughout formative years. That act of avoidance without proper enforcement continues as a “love hate” relationship throughout adulthood. Two US Presidents in recent years have run afoul of their own Food and Drug experts. One mandated that all school lunch programs funded by the government reduce cost by submitting tomatoes with ketchup, without realizing the importance of tomatoes as a fruit. The other, based on his own childhood problems with the taste of vegetables, told a classroom full of kids, on national television that “no one should be made to eat broccoli.” Such serious statements attributed to both leaders of the free world, would virtually mandate to every adult and every child listening, that consumption of Fruits and Vegetables are neither important nor essential. Despite the faux pas made by such high authority the Food & Drug Administration’s mandated studies call for individuals to eat at least 7 10 13 servings of Fruits and Vegetables each day as part of their regular diet to maintain good health. RICHARD E. DUBOIS M.D. is a world renowned Infectious Disease expert with over forty years experience; has treated thousands of patients over the years, and found that patients with the highest rate of success were the ones that consumed a diet rich in phytochemicals and antioxidants found in Fruits and Vegetables. That the ones that had a more difficult recovery had poor diets.

WE’RE PERSONALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR OUR OWN HEALTH Dr. DuBois refers to our System of Health Care as a, “Disease Care System” and that preventing disease is our own personal responsibility that passes right down from the mature individual to the family unit.” He goes on to say, “that a person who has their health has hope, and a person with hope has everything.” Our health depends almost solely on our good nutrition and we must make wise nutritional choices since studies have proven that a diet rich in phytonutrients work synergistically in our bodies to help reduce the risk of all disease. HEALTH STUDIES Some studies show an association with Fruits and Vegetables diets, and a significant reduction in the risk of disease. The studies also link wellness with a diet rich in Fruits & Vegetables Says Dr. DuBois, “Some studies show that with the consumption of Fruits and Vegetables, it is less likely that an individual will die from anything over a given period of time.” He also quotes that “one study by the Centers for Disease Control looked at over 9,000 adults and followed them for over 19 years to prove that point.” The reason for this is the balance of Mother Nature.

Fruits and Vegetables with all those thousands of phytonutrients work together to enhance our good chemistry and to protect against our bad chemistry. GOOD VS BAD CHEMISTRY AND THE PHENOMENON OF OXIDATIVE STRESS

Dr. DuBois likens burning a log in a fireplace to

Oxidative Stress because the fire generates spark s. Without a screen to protect the surface, the spark s would burn holes in the floor. “When we burn Sugar, Fat and Carbs spark s called Free Radicals are burning at a high rate that damages the DNA. To stop them we need to have a diet rich in Fruits & Vegetables

to prevent that damage from occurring.” THE CHALLENGE “It is difficult and costly to get 7 to 13 servings of Fruits and Vegetables in the daily diet,” Dr. DuBois suggest “once a day servings of JUICE PLUS+.” JUICE PLUS+ is whole food based concentrated food capsules that have been studied by over 25 very reputable institutional review boards & research institutions worldwide. “JUICE PLUS+ make no claim to treat or prevent illness or disease. But the results are compelling enough to show that it significantly impacts those aspects of our physiology that lead to disease; to reduce aging and get in the blood stream where it does the most good for the body.” Please call to learn more. What You Should Know About GMO foods do we know about GMO foods? Not a lot. GMO entered our food supply in the mid-1990s as an effort to bring more food to the world marketplace and increase crop yields. Increasing yields meant improving crop protection through increasing a plant’s resistance to disease or its tolerance to herbicides by altering its genetic makeup. While there is much debate worldwide regarding the effectiveness of this approach and the possible health risks to humans and animals, the following should help you to better understand GMO foods that may be in your diet.

What

What is GMO? According to the World Health Organization, GMO is an organism in which the genetic material (DNA) has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally. The nomenclature stands for “Genetically Modified Organism,” and was established to distinguish these new plants from conventionally grown plants. Also known as genetic engineering, selected individual genes are removed from one organism, such as a bacterium, virus, insect or animal, and recombined into the DNA of the plant to be altered. By transferring directly into a plant’s genetic structure, the arrangement of the basic protein template of the cell and expression of its DNA are changed to include some of the cross-species’ genetic material. For example, the bacterium known as Bt (for Bacillus thuringiensis) expresses a protein that is toxic to insects. When Bt genes are transferred into the DNA of corn, the corn produces its own pesticide. Many Common Foods and Ingredients Are GMO In the 15 years since genetically engineered plant foods have been available in the marketplace, many of the most common foods and food ingredients have been genetically altered. According to the Institute for Responsible Technology, most common are soy (91%), cotton (71%), canola (88%), corn (85%), and sugar beets (90%). Foods that use these ingredients include vegetable oils, corn syrup, cornmeal, tofu, tamari, and soy protein supplements. Dairy products that are made with milk from cows injected with the genetically altered growth hormone rbGH also contain GMO. Debate Surrounding GMO Genetic engineering of plant foods seemed like a good idea in the late 1980s/early 90s, and was quickly green lighted by the Food and Drug Administration, foregoing much of the usual lengthy testing required for new food products. According to the Institute for Responsible Technology, the Food and Drug Administration claimed

in 1992 that they had no information showing that genetically modified foods were substantially different from conventionally grown foods. The debate surrounding GMO has only intensified since then. Proponents, like Monsanto and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, defend GMO as the only way to solve the world food shortage crisis and support developing countries’ agriculture economies. Opponents, like the Institute for Responsible Technology, cite adverse health effects, damage to the environment, and the compromising of conventional and organic agriculture. In Europe, the debate is even more heated. Few Scientific Studies In 2009, the American Academy of Environmental Medicine stated, “Several animal studies indicate serious health risks associated with genetically modified food.” While no clinical trials have been conducted on humans, concerns are rising about the effects GMO can have on human health and the environment. While limited, international research studies have cited incidences of tumors, digestive organ failure, compromised immune systems, sterility and the inability to reproduce in laboratory animals fed a GMO diet.

Empirical Reports of Allergic Reactions and Damage According to the Institute for Responsible Technology, the Center for Disease Control reported in March 2001 that food-related illnesses had doubled since 1994 – about the time when Americans began eating GMO food. Allergies to soy increased 50% in the United Kingdom soon after GM soy was introduced. Additional observations include the decimation of monarch butterflies who feed on GMO crops, the increase in pesticide-resistant pests, and cross contamination of GMO genes into conventionally or organically grown crops. Farmers note that, when given a choice, livestock prefer conventional feed and avoid GMO feed.

GMO Impact on Human Health GMO presents a unique challenge to the human physiology by entering the system as unrecognized protein. The extreme allergic responses that some people have noted indicate that the human system doesn’t know how to handle the foreign organism. Everyone is different, however, and some may tolerate GMO better than others. Life is a balancing act of stimuli, and the human body is configured to address and respond to

each stimulus with our best health intended. Another repeated observation is the disturbance of gut function. Occurrences of GIRD, extreme bloating, flatulence, a sense of discomfort during or after eating, and unexplained fat deposits are noted more frequently.

Ways to Identify and Avoid GMO As GMO food has become a large part of the American diet, it is difficult to discern what is GMO and what is not. One identifier of GMO is its ability to remain fresh for weeks at a time showing few signs of decay or degeneration. While a debate is being waged in the U.S. regarding the labeling of GMO foods, there are steps that you can take now to modify your intake of GMO. Recommendations by The Organic and Non-GMO Report and others include: Avoid processed foods containing ingredients from corn, soy, canola, sugar beets and cotton Look for Non-GMO Project verified products

Eat organic - however, GMO foods can also be grown organically Buy locally grown non-GMO foods. Grow your own food using seeds and plants that are not genetically altered.

Brought to you by Third Eye Communications Company

Help Your Business Stay Healthy By Allowing It To Thrive, Not Just Survive Darryl Parham

According to Darryl Parham, owner of Third Eye Communications Company, a marketing video is a simple way to update your website and invest in the growth of your company.

uring a time when the national economy is in a constant struggle to recover, your business or non-profit has managed to survive these hard times. But just because you’ve been able to keep your doors open another day doesn’t mean that business couldn’t be better. When a large corporation like the mega bookstore chain, Borders, is forced to go out of business, it’s proof that no one is exempt from being shut down, particularly a small company. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2010 there was a net loss of 96,000 companies with less than 100 employees; and that was only in the year’s first quarter. The harsh reality is that having your own company can have more downs than ups, especially in a tough economy. One of the worst things a business owner can do is to become complacent with the success that may have been had in the past. The “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” way of thinking may work in some cases, but for a business, sometimes you need to switch things up a bit in order to get new results. Not only can change be good, but it can also be healthy. Much like a healthy human body, a business needs to be provided with sustenance in order for it to exist and grow. For the business owner, having that sustenance means being willing to step out of your comfort zone and try new things. Darryl Parham, a Chicago entrepreneur who’s had his own company for over 20 years, can attest to that. As owner of Third Eye Communications Company, a full service firm specializing in film and video production, he has had to learn to adapt to the changing times. “Even though we’re in a recession there are still things that are very necessary in maintaining the growth of a business. Not being afraid to take chances, or try something you haven’t done before in order to get more business your way, is one of them. To remain visible in today’s society you have to step up your game.” Perhaps you’ve already decided to make that leap of faith and take a step toward providing your company with some proper nourishment. In your mind you’ve toyed around with the thought of how to draw in more clientele, but have the slightest notion on where to begin. One way to improve your company’s bottom line may be as simple as updating your website. It’s a fact that these days a website is a must-have for the success of any business or organization, however, having a site with traditional static pages

“Even though we’re in a recession there are still things that are very necessary in maintaining the growth of a business. Not being afraid to take chances or try something you haven’t done before in order to get more business your way is one of them,” Parham explains. “To remain visible in today’s society you have to step up your game.”

is quickly becoming a thing of the past. To get noticed on the World Wide Web it’s imperative to stay current, and the best way to do that is by updating your website with a marketing video about the services that your business has to offer. A Video Speaks Louder Than Words By creating a marketing video you are giving the public an in depth look into what your company has to offer in a way that comes across better than just using plain text and photos on your site. What you are doing is actually creating your very own commercial. “I don’t think that people understand the value of using video as a visual aid,” says Parham. “When people think about commercials they automatically think, ‘Oh, it’s going to be a million dollars.’ And while there is an expense to it, it should be viewed as an investment into your business. By using the web you can advertise to millions of people for little to no charge; where as before you had to buy air time. Now you can have the same quality product on the Internet as you would on television. Your video can be viewed on your website, or you can have it on Youtube, which gets millions of hits and can draw those same people back to your site. There are several places to advertise on the

Internet, which will also allow you to get instant feedback. That’s a huge advantage.” More Than A Commercial Besides using video to advertise your company to the world, it can also be used to document special events that your business my sponsor such as workshops, training sessions or conferences. This type of documented material can keep your website fresh or even be packaged and sold to clients. Leave It To The Experts Sure, you can try to use your smart phone with all its fancy capabilities to make your video yourself, or you may even let your best friend hold the camera for you while make your marketing piece. Chances are, when all is said and done, what you’ll end up with is a bunch of shaky images with bad lighting and poor sound. “Getting quality work means leaving the job to the experts who have the experience, capabilities and your best interest in mind,” Parham explains. “By getting it done right the first time, you save valuable time that could be going towards the growth and wellness of your business. Hire a professional to do the work so all you have to do is sit back and reap the benefits.”

Managing Asthma with Holistically with Acupuncture & Chiropractic

sthma is a chronic lung disease that narrows the airways, making it difficult for the affected person to breathe properly. It can be a frustrating and stressful condition for children and adults alike, and while there is no cure, many people achieve moments of relief with the help of inhalers, steroids and other types of prescription drugs. Still, there may be alternative treatment options available. Asthma can be triggered by a number of environmental factors including weather conditions, high temperatures, very cold temperatures, high humidity and general allergies from cut grass, ragweed or pollen. Infections such as the flu or cold virus can also trigger asthma symptoms. Too much physical exertion which encourages heavy breathing often leads to an asthma attack, so sufferers must be careful with the types of exercises and sports they participate in. Dust and fumes in the home are other common triggers for asthma sufferers, so many sufferers need to keep their homes as free of dust and other irritants as much as possible. Acupuncture and Chiropractic treatments may help to alleviate the symptoms of asthma, by helping the body regulate itself. Increased sympathetic output can cause hyper-excitability of the nervous system, which not only increases primary hypertension but, may also increase the excitability of an allergic response. Chiropractic manipulation to the cervical and thoracic spine can reset the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. Acupuncture may also help in controlling the symptoms of asthma by regulating the energetic meridians in the body, and helping the body to be in harmony with it’s environment.

When Is The Right Time To Receive Speech Therapy?

“Early Detection” Is Always Best “In most cases a child’s outcome is better when early detection occurs,” Taylor explains. “Treatment can start and be beneficial so that by the time the child is school age they may need less speech and language therapy, or they may no longer need services at all.”

F

rom the time we are born communication becomes one of our most important tools in life. That’s why it’s important to seek professional help when the act of having a conversation becomes a challenge, even in a small way. Certified speech language pathologist Shawnise Taylor, founder of Advancement Tx, believes that when it comes to effective communication early treatment in speech therapy is key. “I am very passionate about working with children and making a positive impact on their lives. We wholeheartedly advocate ‘the earlier, the better’ approach in speech therapy,” says Taylor. “In most cases a child’s outcome is better when early detection occurs. Treatment can start and be beneficial so that by the time the child is school age they may need less speech and language therapy, or they may no longer need services at all.” Advancement Tx, located in the south suburb of Matteson, offers speech and language therapy

performed by qualified allied health professionals who are available to provide individualized treatment to meet your child or loved one’s needs. Advancement Tx specializes in providing pediatric therapy. Treatment options include individual speech and language sessions, language group training, early learning play groups, and evaluation and implementation of augmentative alternative communication (AAC) devices for children who are late talkers or non-verbal communicators with limited verbal output. Contract speech language pathologists are also provided to various school districts in the metropolitan Chicagoland area and the south suburbs. According to Taylor, the most common types of treatment she encounters for young people focus on fluency, or the distortion of sounds that can be caused by a lisp or improper placement of articulators. It is estimated that 10 percent of all Americans have some

speech problem, however, not everyone is fortunate enough to receive treatment at an early age. Grown-ups can also benefit from the adult-centered speech and language therapy that Advancement Tx provides. Services include voice, fluency, communication and body language, public speaking, speech coaching and word retrieval tasks. For adults, speech and language therapy can also focus on feeding. “This would include adjusting and altering diets to ensure that the patient is swallowing safely,” explains Taylor. “Swallow therapy is provided to focus on compensatory swallow strategies that can assist the patient during meals.” If you, your child or someone you know is having difficulty performing at work or at school because of a speech or language related problem don’t put off treatment another day. Let the professionals at Advancement Tx help to advance your life.

Hours of operation are Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Arrangements can also be made for Saturday appointments. Call today or visit Advancement Tx online at www. advancementtx.com.

Since 1989, the Alzheimer’s Association has mobilized millions of Americans through Memory Walk®; now, we’re continuing to lead the way with the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. This newly rebranded event enables people to learn more about Alzheimer’s disease, how to become involved with the association through advocacy efforts, gain access to clinical trial enrollment and learn more about vital community resources. There is also an inspiring ceremony honoring all of those who have been affected by this devastating disease. Two of this year’s participants, Leah and Anya Drew, are walking to honor their mother who has Alzheimer’s disease. This will be their second year participating in an Alzheimer’s walk. The following is from a recent interview with them:

around just how hard this disease is only makes it worse. Family and friends are the most important part of helping to deal with it. They are going to be your shoulder to cry on and your major support system. I also think reaching out to others that are dealing with the same issues, someone in the same age range, is also key. Your friends will be there to listen to you, but they will never truly be able to understand what you’re going through. Leah: I would say, make time for you, the caretaker. When a loved one receives this diagnosis, your personal needs no longer seem important, however making more time for yourself is critical so as not to drown in the responsibilities of caring for an Alzheimer’s sufferer. It’s a 24/7 job, and as with all types of work, you need time off and shouldn’t feel guilty about it. So whether you choose to spend a little extra time with friends, take a run on the lake or a schedule day to sleep in, be sure to create space to care for you.

Why do you think it is important for people who become involved in the walk to end alzheimer’s?

Anya: I think it is important for people to become involved simply because the statistics alone show how much of an impact this disease has on society right now and the impact it will have in the future.

Leah: Because every 69 seconds someone is diagnosed with this disease. This isn’t just an illness, it’s an epidemic, and in order to beat it, we need as much awareness and support as possible. Furthermore, this isn’t something that just attacks the elderly. My mother was just 62 when she was diagnosed, and I’ve met families who were faced with the diagnosis of a family member who was only 40 years of age. Now is the time, so please join us in the fight and Walk to End Alzheimer’s! Sadly, stories like this are echoed throughout the United States and the world. Together we can make a difference! Join us today by visiting www.alz.org/illinois to register for a walk near you! Remember, the end of Alzheimer’s begins with you!

How has alzheimer’s disease impacted your life?

Anya: My mom was diagnosed the summer before my senior year in high school, so it has impacted my life greatly going through my final year of high school, starting college, and really discovering who I am without a mother around is far from easy. I often wonder what my life would have been like if my mom was diagnosed later, or never at all. It makes me wonder if I would have stayed in Chicago for college, if I would have ended up living in Chicago after college and if my sister, dad and I would have become as close as we currently are. So many things changed when degrees from what it was and might have been.

©2011 Alzheimer’s Association. All Rights Reserved.

Leah: My mother was officially diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s in 2005, the summer before I moved to Paris to get an MA in French. Since that time our family has been deeply impacted, as my mother was required to retire and stop driving on the day she was diagnosed with the illness. At first we all took turns caring for her at home, but as with all Alzheimer’s patients, that became too much and we had to hire full time staff to care for her. Over the last six years following her diagnosis we have watched a drastic change in her behavior and habits. Although the experience has brought me closer to my father and sister, it has not been an easy one by any means, and I am certain it has helped me to appreciate the life I have today.

How did you react to your mother’s diagnosis?

Anya: My sister and I had known for a little while that something wasn’t right with my mom, so when she went get examined by the doctor I was prepared for the worst. When we got the doctors’ diagnoses I knew that from then on, nothing was going to be the same. I don’t think it really sunk in what the reality of the situation was until my mom started to progress. It was then that I would find myself crying to my sister or dad and leaning on them for support. Leah: I had been suspicious of Alzheimer’s for about a year prior to my mother’s diagnosis, but hearing that my suspicions were a reality was extremely difficult. I was shocked and overwhelmed, but didn’t take the time to fully digest what this meant for my mother and our family until about six months later. It was really hard, and at first I was fully prepared to deal with the tumultuous emotions on my own. This soon proved overwhelming and I relied on friends, family and other networks for support. About a year after the diagnosis I felt better able to approach the day, and our family’s situation and have been getting stronger ever since. My involvement with the Alzheimer’s Association over the last year has also been a cathartic experience.

What advice would you give to someone with a friend of family member who has just received a diagnosis? Anya: My advice would be to stay strong and that it is not going to be easy. That might not sound like the best advice, but I think tip-toeing

nfortunately, it is becoming more and more common for the average person to learn that a friend or loved one has been diagnosed with breast cancer. The most recent studies from the American Cancer Society (ACS) show that during 2009-2010 an estimated 192,370 new cases of invasive cancer were slated to be diagnosed among women. Even though breast cancer occurs primarily in women, men are not exempt from the disease. The same study indicated that among men 1,910 cases where estimated to occur, making up less than one percent of all breast cancer cases. According to the ACS, cancer is caused by changes in the cell’s DNA. These changes may be inherited or they may be caused by environmental factors or outside exposures. The range of exposures is wide. They include: lifestyle factors (nutrition, tobacco, physical activity); naturally occurring exposures (ultraviolet lights, infectious agents, radon gas); medical treatments (chemotherapy, radiation, immune system suppressing drugs); workplace exposures; household exposures; and pollution. These exposures that can lead to cancer are called carcinogens. How a person gets cancer can depend on many things. The ACS reports that some cancers are caused by prolonged use of a substance, how a carcinogen was exposed and the length and intensity of the exposure, and a person’s genetic make-up. The reasons why women get breast cancer are still not 100 percent conclusive. While there has been a great deal of speculation that antiperspirants and underwire bras could be among the culprits of carcinogens, researchers are still reluctant to validate that there is an association between the products and breast cancer. After singer Sheryl Crow’s 2006 bout with breast cancer, she warned women not to drink bottled water that had been sitting in a car, which is how she believes she got the disease. It is suspected that the heat from the car causes dioxin chemicals to be released from the plastic and into the water. Dioxin is a toxic reported to be increasingly found in breast tissue. Many people, however, consider this particular cause of breast cancer to be an urban legend. In November 2007 Yolanda Stewart was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 50 after

doctors “saw something” in her mammogram results. Since her mother also had the disease, Stewart considers her case to be hereditary. “I am prayerful that someday there is a way to tell what causes this so that women know what to stay away from,” she says. Cancer-free since December 2010, Steward notes she celebrates her remission daily and tells her story to others for encouragement. She offers this advice to the newly diagnosed: “Don’t give

up hope, and stay optimistic as to what can be done. If you catch breast cancer early enough it doesn’t have to be fatal.” The day researchers can pin-point the exact causes of breast cancer may still be far off. Until then women should continue to do monthly self-examinations. Beginning at age 40 women are advised to get a mammogram every 1 to 2 years. If you have a family history of breast cancer, talk to you doctor about when to start, and how often you should receive a mammogram.

This October marks the 27th anniversary of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM).Visit the organization’s Web site at www.nbcam.org to learn more information about breast cancer, not just during the designated month of October, but all year round.

body The Pain Clinic Opens Their 2nd Location avid P. Calimag M.D. and Charles A. Gross D.C., founders of The Pain Clinic, are pleased to announce the opening of their second location at 176 W. Sauk Trail in South Chicago Heights, Il. The office will be open to the public beginning October 1st. At The Pain Clinic the doctors use a combination of neurology, physical therapy, chiropractic care, acupuncture and disc decompression to help alleviate pain and suffering. In their practice the latest therapeutic and rehabilitation equipment is used to assist patients in getting well as soon as possible. Both Dr. Calimag and Dr. Gross believe in a philosophy of using more manual therapies and less drugs, however, medication is available when absolutely necessary. “People get hooked on drugs, explains Dr. Gross, which is why medication is not always their first choice. “We both believe that a number of patients are over medicated and that they aren’t given the proper therapy to help reduce the inflammation and pain. They wind up having to rely on that medication, and all the medication does is block the pain. It doesn’t do anything to help clear up the pain. The therapies do. Some of the most common ailments that patients visit The Pain Clinic for have to do with tingling in the hands and feet. According to Dr. Calimag, oftentimes the cause is due to physical labor. “These symptoms are likely the result of the work they do – sitting at a desk long hours and typing – which

nerve conduction studies suggest can cause carpal tunnel syndrome. Treatment includes doing ultrasound therapy and administering a cortisone injection. Dr. Gross adds that in cases like this The Pain Clinic has been able to successfully treat patients without surgery. “Our feeling is that surgery should be a last resort. On average we send 10 patients into surgery out of 1000, and in these cases we have deemed this is our last option, and is absolutely necessary. To treat ailments and maintain a healthy lifestyle the doctors recommend taking organic herbs, vitamins and minerals. “Our treatment strategy is to always try something natural first, and to use medication and surgery as a last resort, Dr. Gross explains. “We have had

Brought to you by The Pain Clinic a great deal of success sticking to these philosophies. Dr. Gross and Dr. Calimag make it their duty to do more than just preach a healthy lifestyle to their patients. They also set an example by following their own advice. This includes maintaining a healthy weight, not smoking and consistent exercise. “We try our methods on ourselves, Dr. Gross says. “I take the same vitamins I endorse, and I live the same lifestyle I advocate to my patients. To better serve a larger population of those patients is the reason for the opening of the second location of The Pain Clinic in South Chicago Heights. The tentative operating hours at 176 Sauk Trail are as follows: Tuesdays: 1:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Thursdays: 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 and 3:00 – 6:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays: 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. To make an appointment at the new location call 708-756-7777. The Pain Clinic at 500 River Oaks Drive in Calumet City, Il, will still offer the same great service as before. The operating hours are: Mondays and Wednesdays: 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 and 3:00 – 6:30 p.m. Fridays: 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Saturdays: Only 9:00 a.m. appointments are available. Call the office at 708-862-0111 for an appointment. At both locations most major insurances are accepted, including Medicare.
