Editorial

EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Michael Da Silva

It’s been a long time coming, but our fifth issue is finally here. A ‘Derbies Issue’ has been an ambition since our inception in 2013, and we’re delighted to have collaborated with some fantastic writers and photographers to realise this goal. Derbies are the games us football fans live for. There’s nothing quite like the tribalistic battle for local supremacy and it doesn’t matter if you’re fighting for a league title or against relegation — you just need to win the derby. In this issue, we get under the skin of five very different derbies, and explore why there is such bitterness — even hatred — between fans. These include River Plate vs Boca Juniors, Dortmund vs Schalke, AS Roma vs Lazio and Galatasaray vs Fenerbahçe. Also keep an eye out for a derby you may not have heard of: Brazil’s ‘Derby Behind The Wall’. We’re proud to have collaborated with Nike and French image-makers Studio White to bring you an iconic cover and interview with Paris SaintGermain star Blaise Matuidi, who sat down with France team-mates Raphaël Varane and Mamadou Sakho for a Q&A. There’s also an exclusive interview with Liverpool sensation Roberto Firmino, England women’s coach Mark Sampson and we go behind-the-scenes at Real Madrid legend Raul’s final game as a professional for New York Cosmos. So sit back and enjoy The Derbies Issue. Michael Da Silva, Editor of Rabona
