There are few clubs in the world where a titlewinning season can feel anticlimactic. Bayern’s Champions League exit at the hands of Barcelona — injuries or no injuries — brought coach Pep Guardiola’s position into doubt. In fact, the Catalan faced an inquest immediately after Lionel Messi’s virtuoso performance at Camp Nou left Bayern battered and bruised. “I’ve already said 200 million times — I’ll be here next season. That’s it,” an irritated Guardiola told the press. One player who’s been through all the highs and lows at this club is captain Philipp Lahm. He’s experienced the pain of losing a Champions League final on his home turf and the joy of winning Europe’s top prize a year later at Wembley. He is Bayern’s Mr Reliable, the man in whom Guardiola holds unconditional trust. So who better to be the face of a Bayern issue than the man described by Guardiola as the most intelligent player he’s ever coached? In this issue we also speak to Mario Götze about swapping Dortmund for Munich, we explore the contribution of the late legendary coach Udo Lattek, and analyse Bastian Schweinsteiger’s reinvention as a deep-lying midfielder. However you feel about this most divisive of mega clubs, please put your feet up and enjoy our Bayern Munich issue. Michael Da Silva, Editor of Rabona
