Slow down, move over There is no question that the roadside, particularly on high-speed roads, is a dangerous place for stranded motorists. For road workers, emergency-service personnel, police officers, tow-truck drivers, roadside assistance patrols and all those who call the roadside their place of work, this danger is constantly present. Increasing safety on the roadside is a key priority for the RAC and we remain deeply concerned about motorists who do not slow down as they pass broken-down vehicles. The RAC believes several legislative changes coupled with a prominent community-awareness campaign are required to significantly improve the safety of all workers who are required to operate on busy roadsides. We are calling for change because this is not only a road-safety matter for the community; it also affects workplace safety. It is important to also highlight that our concerns are not just confined to the metropolitan road network. The problem is also exacerbated on country roads where high speed limits apply, but there is little room on the roadside to safely park a broken-down vehicle. To increase roadside safety, the RAC is strongly encouraging the state government to identify and implement options to improve the safety of motorists and workers on our roads. We believe the key to increasing roadside safety is the introduction of slow down, move over or SLOWMO regulations and laws. SLOWMO has been introduced in most states in the US and most provinces in Canada and requires motorists to slow down when they see the flashing lights of emergency-service vehicles, tow trucks or roadside-assistance patrol vehicles and to
move over to another lane, if possible, as they pass the scene. There is also the potential to use this opportunity to clarify existing regulations relating to roadside assistance vehicles and tow trucks and also deliver a benefit in terms of reducing congestion by allowing for the more efficient removal of broken-down vehicles. The RAC believes the mix of options must include legislative amendments to the Road Traffic Code or Road Traffic Act to require motorists to slow down or move over (where possible) and exercise care when approaching and passing a broken-down vehicle or crash. To promote awareness of the new requirement to slow down or move over and to highlight the safety issues facing incident or breakdown respondents, the introduction of a community-awareness campaign would be required. The campaign should also inform motorists what they should do to remain safe in the event of a breakdown on a high-speed road. This is an aspect of road safety that cannot be overlooked. The state government should move quickly to review and introduce the required SLOWMO regulations and laws. Our concern is that without a concerted effort to confront this problem, further deaths on our roadsides are, tragically, inevitable. ●

Join the discussion about the RAC and the magazine studs. The tyres had been changed by an operator who was over-zealous with the ‘rattle gun’. Today, tyre fitters have information on torque settings when fitting wheels and most use a hand torque wrench to complete the tightening. If this is not done I suggest that it is requested, with the nuts being released before checking. If they are over-tightened most torque wrenches will only register the fact that they have, at least, reached the setting. Michael Dent, via email
Disaster waiting to happen
Our winning letter
Never too young to learn Learning to drive should begin when you start school. We put children on bicycles and expect them to know how to interact with other vehicles. We should be teaching the most basic of rules, “keep to the left” and “give way to the right”, from the start of kindergarten. Children learn by playing. Bicycle tracks and footpaths at schools should all be “keep to the left” and “give way to the right”. As parents, we always explained road rules to our son and daughter when driving them to and from sport and shops. Kids are far more observant than adults. Reinforcing the rules in school lessons and family outings doesn’t have to be boring or tiresome. Coleen Swaan, Port Hedland
Where’s the number? The RAC has been strongly promoting the dangers of distracted drivers and I commend you for this. One distraction [when driving] that
annoys me, and over which the driver has no control, is the lack of street numbers on buildings. If a driver is looking for a particular location that is unnumbered or not clearly numbered, they need to slow down while trying to find the location. This is a dangerous distraction not only to the driver but to the traffic following. GPS navigation units are helpful but can’t always be relied on. If you take a drive down any of our highways you will see that many buildings are not numbered. It amazes me when businesses spend large sums on advertising but then don’t have the courtesy to number their premises. Numbering may be mandatory but if it is not, it should be. David Gore, via email
Wheel nuts hazard J.Hardwick’s letter (Horizons, April/May) reminded me of an experience [I had] many years ago. I lost both rear wheels on my Nissan Patrol, at different times on the same trip, due to stripped threads on the
I couldn’t agree more with the President’s message about the seriousness of road crashes in the Wheatbelt. My husband and I live in a Wheatbelt town and the residents in our town and other nearby towns are faced with the possibility of a massive waste dump being established nearby. The company concerned plans to run double-bogied trucks every 20 minutes to and from Perth on a 24-hour basis every day of the year. These trucks will run from the Welshpool transfer station up through Mundaring, Sawyers Valley and on to the Great Southern Highway. The mind boggles at how such a colossal increase in traffic can ever be considered, let alone endorsed. The Great Southern Highway is already facing an increase in trucks due to wheat being carted by road with the upcoming closure of the Tier 3 rail system. The Great Southern Highway is a narrow, twisting road with no mobile phone coverage for much of its length. There is going to be a huge increase in road crashes if something isn’t done to reduce the number of trucks using these roads. It isn’t just a matter of improving roads, such an increase in traffic makes any improvements just
a temporary move. Just off the Great Southern Highway at the Lakes junction, we also have trucks carting from the quarry. This road is fast becoming a nightmare to travel on, not knowing what the traffic volume will be on any given day and with a mobile phone blackspot from just past the Lakes junction to just before York only adding to the worry. Jean Durbin (via email)
Am I still a good driver? Now that there is no requirement for a driving test for the over-80s, is it possible for a qualified independent observer to provide a driver with a driving assessment? As I approach 70, I do wonder whether my ability has deteriorated or if I have developed undesirable habits. As a former Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents ‘Gold’ advanced driver in the UK, I recognise the need to maintain my personal safety standards at their best achievable level. Stephen Winfield, via email

Snapshot News in brief from the RAC & beyond
The RAC is pleased to announce it is a Presenting Partner of Anzac Albany.
The Anzac Centenary The first of November, 2014, will mark 100 years since troops from the Australian Imperial Force and New Zealand Expeditionary Force departed from Albany to serve in the First World War. For many on-board those ships, Albany’s King George Sound would be their last sight of Australia. The Anzac Centenary is a four-year commemoration that pays tribute to those who fought in the First World War and all wars and conflicts in which Australians have since been involved, in combat and in peacekeeping roles. From 30 October, 2014, the national and international spotlight will be on Albany, with a range of significant commemorative and community events and activities planned.
Anzac Albany Community Events l Princess Royal Harbour Lights l WASO Community Concert with special guests l Anzac Projections and Storytelling l Stirling Terrace Mess Hall For event details visit anzacalbany.com.au.
The RAC’s Executive General Manager, Pat Walker, said the partnership was a perfect fit for an iconic Western Australian organisation with a long history in the state. “To be a Presenting Partner of the Anzac Albany events during the Anzac Centenary commemorations is a great opportunity for us to reflect on the sacrifices made by so many brave troops and all those touched by war, and to give something back to our members and our community.” The RAC’s support will be directed towards community events and the volunteer program, as well as the dedicated public transport network operating during the events.
Get involved Many volunteers will be involved in Anzac Albany events filling a range of positions including event marshals and tour guides. Volunteer positions are already filling fast. To find out more visit anzacalbany.com.au/participate. If you would like to submit a personal Anzac Centenary story or images visit anzacalbany.com.au/participate and select ‘Submit personal accounts’
Member accommodation offer As part of the partnership RAC members will also have the chance to stay in Albany and be part of these landmark events. RAC members will be given the opportunity to secure a site at the Centennial Campground presented by the RAC in the centre of Albany. Access to specially prepared temporary sites suitable for tents and caravans within walking distance of the town centre, with an event shuttle-bus stop also nearby and both powered and nonpowered sites will be available. Members will be able to stay at the sites between 30 October and 3 November. With accommodation in high demand for this special weekend, members are encouraged to book early to secure a site. For more information about this special opportunity for RAC members or to secure your site please visit rac.com.au/anzacalbany.
Centenary edition of Horizons The October/November edition of Horizons magazine will be dedicated to the Anzac Centenary with information about special centenary events, an Albany Anzac centenary map and a look back at Western Australia during the First World War. Look out for your October/ November 2014 issue of Horizons.

STUDENTS GET A CLOSE-UP VIEW OF ROAD TRAUMA Event awarded This year bstreetsmart won a Consumer Protection Award under the Kidsafe WA category for its contribution to the advancement of injury prevention for children.
bstreetsmart for regional students On 1 July, about 28 regional high schools also had the chance to be part of bstreetsmart when the event was staged for regional students during the Country Senior High Schools Carnival.
More than 5200 WA students in years 10 to 12 were brought close to the devastating impact of road trauma at the RAC bstreetsmart event held earlier this year. RAC bstreetsmart, staged at Perth Arena, exposed students to a live re-enactment of a fatal crash scene, with emergency services demonstrating how they respond to such a crisis. Students watched the dramatisation unfold as police attended the scene, personnel from the Department of Fire and Emergency Services removed the roof of a car using the ‘jaws of life’ and victims were attended by paramedics. Students also heard stories from those whose lives had been affected by road trauma. The annual event was presented by the RAC, WA Police, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services, St John Ambulance and Royal Perth Hospital. The bstreetsmart initiative is an important part of the RAC’s commitment to positively influencing the behaviour of one of our most vulnerable groups of road users. Drivers aged 17 to 24 account for only 11 per cent of the population and yet comprise more than 18 per cent of road fatalities. Did your teenager’s school register to take part? Lost in transit In 2013, Main Roads WA recorded 1675 callouts to collect debris on our roads. A high number of these callouts were for unsecured loads that had fallen from vehicles, including household goods, building materials and green waste. Each year, debris falling from unsecured loads causes road closures and disruptions, especially on our freeways, and can be a major contributor to serious crashes. Debris can also cause significant damage to vehicles and property. Motorists are reminded to ensure any loads they are transporting are correctly positioned and well secured before they set off. Loads should be secured using high-quality load restraints and should be checked immediately before leaving and also during the trip. For more information visit mainroads.wa.gov.au.
Keeping kids safe and active The RAC recently partnered with WestCycle, WA’s peak cycling body, to deliver 10 cycling education workshops to more than 300 students during a week-long tour to six communities across the Wheatbelt. The tour visited Beacon, Kalannie, Merredin, Bruce Rock, Narembeen and York.

Two accredited coaches delivered the workshops where students learnt bike-handling skills and basic bike maintenance. The program aims to keep kids safe on our roads as well as encouraging cycling as an alternative mode of transport. RAC Sponsorship Manager Carina Lauder said the sponsorship support is part of more than $675,000 already provided to local communities since the RAC’s Community Sponsorships program began in 2011. The Wheatbelt tour is part of a series of week-long tours in regional WA which are being coordinated by the RAC and delivered by WestCycle. WestCycle CEO, Clint Shaw, noted that “over the past couple of decades the number of kids riding to school has actually declined. It’s our focus to change that and we know through research that children who receive cycle training not only display safer cycling behaviour but they also ride more often. So we’re incredibly grateful to the RAC for coming on-board and sponsoring the project.” The next tour is scheduled for September 2014 and will visit WA’s Mid West. For more information on the RAC’s Community Sponsorships program visit rac.com.au/sponsorship.
The recent upgrade to a section of the Kwinana Freeway’s shared path will ensure a better flow of bicycles and pedestrians along the busy path, as well as minimising water overflow from the Swan River. The path was widened between the Narrows Bridge and the Thelma Street footbridge and a concrete wave deflector wall was installed on the retaining wall to minimise river overflow. The sloping river-wall on the bank of the river between Bowman Street and Lyall Street was also strengthened. This section of the Kwinana Freeway’s shared path between the Narrows Bridge and Canning Bridge is the most heavily trafficked in the metropolitan area. In 2011, there were more than 3000 daily and 712,000 annual bike movements. Use of the path by cyclists is growing at an annual rate of about seven per cent. The project cost $3.1 million.

estern Australia is blessed with a staggering array of natural beauty every which way you look. Glossy magazines showcasing our stunning coastline, rugged scrub and powder-blue skies cause endless yearning for an escape from the daily grind. But you don’t need to traverse the state to find some of its most beautiful regions. Just an hour south of Perth, the Peel offers all of the above and so much more. Given the waterways of the Peel-Harvey Estuary are twice the size of Sydney Harbour, many get no further than the boating options,
a spot of crabbing or relaxing on Mandurah’s quaint shoreline. But if you want to experience more of the region’s stunning natural beauty, head inland to the rolling farmlands and the majestic native forests of the Darling Scarp. The pretty town of Pinjarra is about 17 kilometres from Mandurah along the Pinjarra Road, and sits at the mouth of the Murray River. Established by Thomas Peel in 1830, Europeans were once attracted to the area for its fertile land, and these days many are drawn to its peaceful rural lifestyle. A walk through Pinjarra reveals several historical points of interest within the Edenvale Heritage Precinct,
Drive 23 kilometres east from Pinjarra along Williams Road to the forested town of Dwellingup and one of the world’s longest walking trails. The Bibbulmun Track stretches almost 1,000 kilometres from the Perth Hills south to Albany. Dwellingup is about 12 walking days from the Perth starting point in Mundaring and is an ideal spot to begin day or overnight hikes. You can get a sense of what life was once like for our pioneers while walking the former railway track bordered by towering jarrah and marri forests. Rustic campsites provide simple overnight accommodation and the track is clearly signposted with yellow triangular markers symbolising the Waugal, the rainbow serpent of Aboriginal Dreaming. The trail caters to all levels of fitness, and you can either join a guided group or trek independently. One of the highlights of walking the Bibbulmun Track from Dwellingup is passing through Lane Poole Reserve, although this can also be reached by vehicle or bike. Covering almost 55,000 hectares, the reserve is named after C E Lane-Poole, the state’s first Conservator of Forests, and August / September 2014 Horizons 19

Fast facts Where is it The inland Peel region is approximately an hour’s drive south from Perth and lies between Armadale and Harvey. Visitors driving from Perth can take the South Western Highway, or if leaving from Mandurah, take Pinjarra Road. The region can be enjoyed in a day or over a weekend.
Distance from Perth About 75km south of Perth, depending on your route.
When to go Summers are warm and dry while autumn and winter are cool, often with heavy rainfall. June to October is ideal for white water rafting. In September and October the entire region blooms with wildflowers.
Where to stay There are plenty of accommodation options in the region from camping to luxury chalets, apartments, caravan parks, even houseboats.
Don’t miss The opportunity to let a local expert be your guide. Consider the Pack ‘n’ Paddle tour with local company Dwellingup Adventures, a ladies’ pampering and adventure day along the Munda Biddi Trail with Adventurous Women or a five-day trek from Collie to Balingup with Inspiration Outdoors. is one of those special spots the locals would prefer you didn’t know about. Undulating jarrah and wandoo woodlands hug the meandering river, adorned with granite outcrops and more than 500 species of native plants, cockatoos, possums and scrub birds. It’s hardly surprising that it’s a year-round favourite for camping, bushwalking, photography, picnics, canoeing, wildlife watching and cycling.
Mundaring to Albany, The challenging terrain of the Munda Biddi Trail keeps off-road cyclists active year round through 1000km of unspoilt forest, towering eucalyptus and quaint country towns all the way from Mundaring to Albany, including Dwellingup. The cycling trail through this area can be tackled as a day trip or off-road cycling enthusiasts can camp at the purpose-built cycle-friendly campsites along the trail.

Near the Murray River, Dwellingup was once a traditional Aboriginal camping ground named after the Indigenous word, meaning “place nearby water”. White-water rafting is popular from June to October and as well as bushwalking, mountain biking and canoeing, you can also find thrills in other adventure activities such as abseiling, the flying fox and horse-riding. After all that excitement you might want to consider tea and scones at the charming Blue Wren Café, or locally made apple cider, ginger beer and fruit wines at the Wine Tree, just out of town. For dinner with a difference step back in time and board the Etmilyn Diner Restaurant Train or take a scenic ride on the Steam Ranger, both part of the Hotham Valley Tourist Railway. The railway line through this region opened in 1910 to serve the once thriving timber industry. Today, the historic

line is run purely as a tourist service, and winds through the region’s picturesque forests. About a 10-minute walk out of town takes you to the distinctive leaf shaped Forest Heritage Centre where you can join tours, visit the gallery or take a workshop. Also nearby is metal sculpture studio Mill Studio and private art gallery Monart Design. About 35 kilometres south-west of Dwellingup, Waroona offers camping at Lake Navarino - a freshwater man-made lake popular for water sports. The Shire of Waroona includes Preston Beach, Hamel and Lake Clifton and stretches from the ocean to the Darling Range. From Waroona township, moving west and crossing the Forrest Highway, the ancient thrombolite reef is located on the edge of Lake Clifton with the nearby Yalgorup National Park offering camping, bushwalking, and access to the crystal
waters of Preston Beach. The beach is a popular destination for four-wheel drive and fishing enthusiasts. At the northern end of the Peel region, the Serpentine National Park is one of the state’s best places to experience September and October’s wildflower season - expect to see Wattles, Kangaroo Paws and Hakeas. Famed for its Serpentine Falls, the national park is a stunning place to picnic and partake in a spot of bird watching for western rosellas, yellow robins and endangered red-tailed cockatoos. Or as you head back to the big smoke, treat yourself at Millbrook Winery located in the picture-perfect Chestnut Farm, where much of the produce is farmed locally and delivered fresh to the table. Manjimup marron, Baldivis rabbit, Blackwood beef and sharing platters showcase the region’s outstanding fresh produce. l

Words and photography David McGonigal
A voyage to Antarctica is at the top of many travellers’ wish lists. Expedition leader and Antarctica expert David McGonigal shares his thrilling experiences of this wild and beautiful continent.

shuaia, a charming frontier town at the tip of Argentina, is the jumping off point for voyages to Antarctica, a two-day ocean journey across the infamous Drake Passage. Ominous for some, iconic for others, this sometimes-stormy stretch of water is where passengers begin to make the adjustment to their new environment; learning to find their way around the ship, getting their sea-legs, spending time watching whales and albatross, and getting to know the ship’s staff, crew and fellow passengers. On expedition ships those first few sea days are crowded with presentations about Antarctica, its history, wildlife, politics and how to make the most of the extraordinary photographic opportunities. Like everyone who works in Antarctica, the presenters are passionate about their subjects and often have PhD-level knowledge, have published books on the continent, or have links to national science programs or the Scott Polar Research Institute. Antarctica slowly unfolds as you approach. The Convergence, where cold, northward-flowing Antarctic waters meet the relatively warmer waters of the subantarctic, is a natural border. A feeding ground for whales and seabirds, the Convergence brings a chill to the air and lets you know you’ve finally arrived. Spotting your first gleaming white iceberg sculpted by the sea is an exciting moment. Finally, the mountains of the Antarctic Peninsula or the South Shetland Islands
- black and snowy peaks above shimmering glaciers - are visible. Here the sea is calm, the waves dampened by the ice. Zodiac boats, the stable and dependable inflatable craft designed by Jacques Cousteau, are the basis of Antarctic excursions from expeditionary ships. Accommodating about a dozen passengers each, they can carry you to the edge of the ice, a rocky promontory or a shallow beach so you can step onto dry land (or ice) or into a few centimetres of water. Gumboots and waterproof jackets and pants are necessary equipment – some expedition companies provide this essential gear to passengers, but on some expeditions you’ll need to bring your own. Naturally, the activities ashore depend on where you go – and that’s determined by the initial sail plan modified by ice, wind and weather. Ideally, there’s time to climb onto a glacier or take a walk along a beach. But sometimes a profusion of penguins and seals limits how far you can move. It’s a real joy to use the Zodiac as a floating camera platform and take a cruise through the ice-seeking sunbaking seals on icebergs or, later in the summer, look for curious Humpback and Minke whales. Days in the Antarctic have their own rhythm. Typically a morning excursion is followed by lunch back

on board, while the ship relocates for a new excursion destination. Then it’s time to take the Zodiacs out again, returning in time for drinks and dinner. After dinner, the ship’s dining room accommodates everyone for recaps about the highlights of the last excursion and a preview of the next. At night the decks and bridge are perfect locations for watching alpenglow over snowy peaks. And if the weather is good the majority of voyages offer the opportunity
to camp “on the ice”, where you can really feel part of the Antarctic experience, discomfort and all. Of course, it can sometimes be difficult to leave the warm comforts of the ship. And expedition ships put a premium on passenger comfort. One Ocean Expeditions’ twin ships Akademik Ioffe and Akademik Sergey Vavilov are ice-strengthened and very stable as well as light and spacious and all passenger cabins have windows or portholes. library provides excellent forward views and there’s a small gym, sauna and heated plunge pool. Passengers’ culinary needs are accommodated, from international cuisine to personal food sensitivities. The ever-present hotel manager is there to help you out and, if medical problems present, an expedition doctor is on hand. The comfort and luxury on-board is a very welcome respite from Antarctica’s wild and often harsh environment.

There’s a surprising diversity of excursions along the Antarctic Peninsula whether you’re looking for a specific species of penguin, ice cruising, a visit to a scientific base, climbing up a glacier (or watching one hoping to see the dramatic moment when a wall of ice falls away from the glacier). Some passengers elect to take kayak excursions (you may need to sign up to the whole program to participate) to gain a unique viewpoint of Antarctica. Each excursion leader has his or her own speciality so you may wish to join the birder’s Zodiac, or be accompanied by a marine mammals expert, an historian or a glaciologist.
returned more than 100 times. That’s not unusual – many passengers spend the voyage home planning their return. There’s always South Georgia, or the Weddell Sea or the mystical Antarctic Circle for next time. Most enthusiasts agree that you initially come down for the wildlife but will keep coming back again and again for the captivating ice continent in all its myriad forms. ●
Where is it? Since Antarctica separated from Australia 30 million years ago it’s taken up residence over the South Geographic Pole. While Antarctica is a continent surrounded by ocean, the Arctic is frozen ocean surrounded by continents.
Trip length The shortest voyage to Antarctica is 10 days but there are some 12-day voyages that venture further afield. Allow 18 days or more if you wish to include the Falkland Islands and South Georgia.
Picture perfect On One Oceans Expeditions, a professional photographer, whose role is to help you bring back the best possible photos, is always available to advise passengers. From presentations and one-on-one sessions on board to a photography expedition or special shore excursions to seek out the perfect angle, the offer of photographic assistance and development is always there. There’s certainly no lack of subject matter and most travellers are surprised and delighted with their results. An Antarctic voyage sometimes seems like “the ship that never sleeps” with birders meeting in the library after dinner, midnight sunset photography on the bow, 3am dawn wake-ups for the keenest photographers and pre-breakfast bridge watches for whales. The two-day voyage back across the Drake is a welcome chance to rest, consolidate diaries and photographs and review the voyage with fellow passengers and staff. Of course, that’s unless an unusual albatross, or the sighting of a Blue or Fin whale is announced over the PA. On my first voyage to Antarctica in 1995 I thought it would be a one-off trip-of-a-lifetime. Instead I became infatuated, found work, and have
Fast facts
What’s involved Getting to Ushuaia, the departure port, requires a flight from Australia to Argentina via Santiago de Chile. Take a night to rest (or tango) in Buenos Aires then fly south to Ushuaia. It’s a good idea to arrive in Ushuaia at least one day before departure. Take the time to explore the town or take a trip to the National Park that’s literally at the end of the road.
Best time to go
About the author David McGonigal has worked as an expedition leader since 2002, and has been part of the One Oceans Expeditions team since 2010. He has visited Antarctica every year since 1995 and has participated in more than 100 polar voyages, leading many of them. He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and the co-author of Antarctica - the Complete Story and subsequent Antarctic books. His polar photographs have been exhibited worldwide and in 1997 he briefly rode in Antarctica and so became the first person ever to motorcycle on all seven continents (and through all 24 time zones).
The Antarctic summer season runs from late October until March. While it’s hard to generalise, early season is pristine, mid-season has penguin chicks and late season is best for whale-watching.
When to book Book any time but keep in mind some voyages fill up many months before the sailing date.
Antarctic essentials Unless you are prepared to stay on the ship you need to be mobile
enough to get up and down the gangway. Once ashore you can be as active or sedentary as you wish. Buy evacuation insurance - a part of most travel insurance policies. Always take your own supply of essential medications.
What to take Waterproof clothing - jacket, pants and boots - is provided on many ships so you may only need to bring good warm waterproof gloves. The temperature is about the same as an Australian ski resort so make sure you have fleece, long johns and a warm hat. A waterproof bag or backpack will keep cameras dry, too. Take extra memory cards or a back-up drive for photographs. A back-up camera can be reassuring in the harsh Antarctic conditions.
Safety Antarctica is unlike anywhere else in the world so it’s comforting to see the highly skilled officers and crew working efficiently in icy conditions. You will soon develop the same confidence in your expedition leader and his team, whether they are driving Zodiacs around icebergs or leading you on-shore excursions.
Don’t miss Everyone visiting Antarctica should take the time to put down the camera and simply appreciate where they are. Antarctica is an exotic and beautiful alien world of ice, populated by penguins, seals and whales. Being there is enriching and few return unchanged.

RAC Special report

fter the mortgage payment, buying and running a car can be a household’s highest expense, so it pays to understand exactly where your money is going. The RAC’s annual Vehicle Operating Costs report reveals the true cost of owning and running your car from interest payments and depreciation to fuel, servicing, insurance and more. Alex Forrest, RAC Manager Vehicles and Fuels says this year’s report reflects some key changes in car costs over the past 12 months. “Compared to last year’s results, there was a significant increase in the cost of LPG, which of course impacted the
cost of running LPG-powered vehicles,” Mr Forrest says. “Also, the $2,000 government rebate scheme for the purchase of LPG vehicles closed on 30 June 2014, which made LPG vehicles even less affordable.” “Over the past 12 months we’ve also seen more manufacturers offering fixedpriced servicing, which generally means the cost of servicing has come down,” he says. Mr Forrest also notes that while electric vehicles are perceived as cheap to run, the high depreciation and up-front costs continue to make them an expensive option. This year’s report also includes an additional category, with micro cars now positioned below light cars and judged on their own. “With more cars in this category, it’s only
fair that we have this distinction between micro and light cars,” says Mr Forrest. Consumers will not be surprised that costs are rising generally. The rise in inflation, stamp duty, fuel and registration are making an impact on the overall cost of owning and running a car. The largest of those costs is depreciation. “Most people don’t think of depreciation when buying a car, but it’s the single biggest cost over time,” says Mr Forrest. While prospective car buyers should be reading the detail of the report carefully, Mr Forrest acknowledges cost is not the only factor involved in a purchase. “Some people are very passionate about their cars and their cars define them,” he says. “Others just want to get to from A to B as efficiently as possible.”

Motoring Mad Max’s Interceptor, perhaps the most famous Australian star car of all

s movie stars go, they’re probably the easiest of all to work with, thanks to low wages, zero costs for hair and make-up and a willingness to put in long hours. Best of all, if one of them dies they can be easily replaced, and no one will even notice. Yes, we’re talking star cars, the motor vehicles that have put the motion in motion pictures and gone on to become icons just as beloved as the hopelessly unpredictable and demanding human actors. In global terms, some of the most famous star cars are James Bond’s Aston Martin, Herbie, the Batmobile and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and on television KITT from the US TV show Knight Rider
and the Dukes of Hazzard’s General Lee, but you could argue that there’s one Australian creation that stands, or parks, right beside them, the Mad Max Interceptor. Ask Adrian Bennett, the man behind the Mad Max Museum in Silverton, NSW, just outside Broken Hill, where much of the first two movies was shot, and he’s in no doubt at all. “I’d say it’s the most iconic car in film history, maybe that and the Batman car, depending on your generation, but I might be biased,” he admits. This is a man who moved from Yorkshire, in England’s freezing north, to the harsh red desert of Australia seven years ago, purely to pursue his passion for the Mad Max film series.
“Mad Max has been such a big part of my life, other people think I’m mad, because I moved 12,000 miles from Yorkshire to the outback to collect these cars and set up this museum,” he says. His collection includes two replicas of the famous Interceptor - which was adapted from a 1973 XB GT Falcon Coupe by Ford designer Peter Arcadipane and a few others - as well as several of the crazy buggies used to chase the character of Max down in the sequel. With its unique “Concorde” front end and non-functional supercharger pouring through the bonnet, only one Interceptor was made for the original film, and after spending many years on the promotional circuit it was bought by car collector Peter Nelson to take pride of place at his Cars August / September 2014 Horizons 37

It really is high time there was an Oscar for Best Motor Vehicle in a Motion Picture. In the movie, the savant-like inventor Malcolm, creates a getaway car for a bank robbery. The ingenious car - a Honda Z - splits in half and becomes two individual, two-wheeled vehicles. The effect was achieved using three different Hondas, one of which was made up of two motorbikes with a Honda Z shell. Stunt riders drove/rode those two in the movie. A second car was used for shots of the actors and was built on to a caravan base and dragged along behind a tracking vehicle, while the third stayed in one piece, and is now kept in the foyer of Cascade Films in Melbourne. The fully driveable split car is stored at the National Film and Sound Archive in Canberra, as a treasured relic. Considering cars that have become part of Australia’s motoring heritage it’s fitting that perhaps the most famous, revered and collectible car ever produced here,

of the Stars museum in Cheswick, England (where it was parked right next to Chitty Chitty Bang Bang). In 2011 it was sold on to the Dezer Collection, where it now resides in North Miami, Florida. At the other end of the toughness scale, and a far bigger star in every way, is Priscilla, the bus that took a title role in the 1994 film, Priscilla Queen of the Desert. Almost half of this surprising global hit - about a group of drag queens from Sydney venturing into the bush to put on a show - was set in the hard-as-nails mining town of Broken Hill, which has become the permanent home for Priscilla, or at least one of her iterations. Stephen Elliott, who directed the film and the subsequent stage adaptation, was offered $1 million for a very special version
of the boy-bus, but decided to gift it to the town that had been so welcoming to him and his crew instead. “It’s a free-standing, massive scale Greyhound that moves on its own, can spin completely 360 degrees and pivot on the spot, all the sides of it open up and close,” Mr Elliott said of the bus, which was specially built for the stage show. “It’s got an extraordinary lighting design inside, it’s got scissor lifts, things that rise up and down, so that people can rise in and out of it. And its big one is that it changes colour.” Andrea Roberts, manager of community development for Broken Hill City Council, says the city is hoping the bus will become a major tourist attraction… as soon as they work out what to do with it. “It’s in storage at the moment and we’re still trying to find a home for it, because the sheer size of it is making things a little tricky, we need forklifts just to move it, and it’s tricky to find a local business that can fit it in,” she says. “We’re hoping it will add to the overall film experience we provide for visitors. Lonely Planet listed us in the top four locations in the world known to appear in movies.” Priscilla and the Mad Max Interceptor are largely responsible for that fame, although actors Mel Gibson, Hugo Weaving and Terence Stamp may have helped. From a slightly less successful film, 1986’s cult comedy classic Malcom, comes perhaps the most spectacular and innovative vehicle in Australian screen history, known colloquially as the “split car”.

the Falcon GT-HO Phase III, also had its moment on the silver screen. A GT-HO featured alongside a Dodge Challenger and a ’57 Chevy Coupe in the street-racing Aussie classic, Running On Empty, in 1982. Partly funded by the Film Corporation of Western Australia, and starring a young singer called Deborah Conway, it captures a moment in time when the famous Falcon was a car people owned and drove, rather than the museum piece it is today. Perhaps the most disturbing film ever to star cars, and possibly the strangest movie ever made in Australia, is Peter Weir’s gothic classic, The Cars That Ate Paris. Literally a car crash of a movie, it’s about the fictional Australian country town of Paris, where the residents arrange fatal accidents for any visitors passing through. The locals salvage and modify the wrecked vehicles, turning them into wonders of weirdness on wheels, including the infamous Volkswagen Beetle covered in spikes, to become a kind of vehicular porcupine. This was a Vincent Price/Bela Lugosi moment for cars in Australian cinema.

“Not the bloody Kingswood” When it comes to the small screen, cars have always played supporting roles in Australia, never reaching the fame of The Dukes of Hazzard’s General Lee or Knight Rider, but there was one that gave its name to a legendary comedy series, Kingswood Country. Those of us old enough to remember the show might be trying to picture Ted Bullpitt’s beloved Holden Kingswood, of which he was so fiercely protective (“Not the bloody Kingswood!”), but the fact is the car was never shown on television. Bullpitt was obsessed with the car, although he actually traded it in for a Holden Commodore late in the series, but most of the show was filmed on set and he
was never actually shown driving it, or washing it, although he talked about both a lot. The keys, which he treated as some kind of holy relic, were the only starring part of the Kingswood. Interestingly, the Kingswood sedan wasn’t in production when the show was put to air, from 1980 to 1985. Ross Higgins, who played Bullpitt, recently revealed that the show’s makers approached Holden at the time, hoping to strike an endorsement deal (presumably for the Commodore), but both the local branch and General Motors flatly declined to get involved. It’s a decision that’s hard to imagine in the modern world of product placement. Audi chose to sneak preview its awesome R8 to the world by featuring a futuristic version in the Will Smith vehicle I, Robot, in 2004. Sadly there won’t be any Aussie vehicles making their debut in the new Mad Max film, Fury Road, due to premiere next year. Much to Adrian Bennett’s disappointment, the whole thing was filmed in Namibia.
The greatest Aussie movie car Alex Forrest, Manager Vehicles and Fuels for the RAC, says he’s with Bennett when it comes to the greatest Australian movie car of all time. “It’s got to be Mad Max’s Interceptor, definitely, and I was actually lucky enough to drive a really beautiful replica of that car here in WA a few years ago,” he says. “To drive that car was like making a fantasy reality, like being part of the movie that had blown me away in a drive-in all those years ago.” Mr Forrest points out that there are several iconic movie cars that now call Western Australia home, including the Valiant ute from the original Crocodile Dundee film, the XW Falcon ute from Red Dog, the 1920s Essex from Phar Lap and his own 1968 Volvo 1800S. You might not have seen Esoterica, the small, art-house flick filmed in Perth, that his immaculate Volvo appeared in, but for a proud owner like Mr Forrest it’s a treasured moment in film. “An old university colleague of mine was involved in making this film and he knew I had the car so he asked me to lend it to
them for a day, so I went along and it was just fantastic,” he says. “It wasn’t a huge budget thing, but there was still all the lighting and the sound people, and it still took all day just to produce a few seconds of film. The actor actually drove my car in a getaway scene and tore off in it, which was pretty cool to watch.” Once again, a car stole the scene. It really is high time there was an Oscar for Best Motor Vehicle in a Motion Picture. l
007: The Bond cars The Aston Martin DB5 that James Bond drove in Thunderball and Goldfinger is a star whose brightness never wanes. Two DB5s were used in the making of these two films, one of which was stolen in 1997 and hasn’t been seen since. The other is in a museum in Ohio. Though this is Bond’s most famous ride, 007 has nonetheless been almost as profligate in his vehicle choices as he is with women. While Aston has tied itself to the Bond brand in recent years, cashing in on the shared heritage, the super spy has also been seen in car brands ranging from Alfa Romeo, BMW and Lotus (including the famous submarine car), through to AMC, Sunbeam, Citroen and Toyota. It was an Aston DBS, though, that featured in possibly the most spectacular Bond car stunt ever filmed, for Daniel Craig’s debut in Casino Royale. Several Astons were destroyed (a delivery driver crashed one into a lake on the way to the set) or horrifically damaged during filming, but the one that set a Guinness Record for the most flips ever captured on film - seven - was a DB9 specially modified to look like a DBS. Adam Kirley, the stunt driver, used an air cannon to launch the car into the incredible barrel roll, and then presumably held on very tight.

RUNNING ON EMPTY It’s not unthinkable that a major disruption to liquid fuel supplies in Australia could happen. Whether it’s a refinery disaster or an accident at sea, Jane Hammond asks the question: how would Australia cope?

magine life without liquid fuel. Simply getting to and from work could become a major logistical issue, let alone accessing food and medical supplies. There could be rationing and queues for basic necessities. It’s a scenario that has some of the hallmarks of the plot of a post-apocalyptic film, but in reality this scenario might not be as implausible as many people imagine. A report by the NRMA released earlier this year estimates Australia has as little as 21 days of liquid fuel in storage, leaving the nation vulnerable to disruptions in fuel supplies. From a tanker running aground and blocking a shipping channel to a major incident at one of the few remaining Australian refineries, we could be just one catastrophe away from rationing. The NRMA’s report Australia’s Liquid Fuel Supply, Part 2, written by retired RAAF air vice-marshal John Blackburn, warns that more needs to be done to reduce the nation’s oil vulnerability. The report finds that we currently import more than 90 per cent of our liquid fuel needs and states we need to be keeping more in stock in readiness for a disruption. It calls for political action to ensure the nation’s refineries remain viable and for a more coordinated effort to reverse the growing fuel security problem.
The report also warns that in the event of a conflict Australia may have to rely on “the tacit approval of foreign refineries” to keep its naval helicopters flying. RAC Manager Vehicles and Fuels Alex Forrest sits on the WA State Fuel Emergency Management Committee and says the first line of response to any major disruption to fuel supply is public education. In the event of a shortage consumers would be advised to reduce their fuel consumption by taking simple measures like reducing car trips, using public transport and bicycles, car-pooling and driving more carefully to limit fuel use. Rationing would be the next step, with priority given to fire and emergency and other essential services workers. Police, ambulance, fire units, taxis and public transport would be exempt from rationing. Members of the public would at first be encouraged to use voluntary restrictions but if the situation continued or worsened then restraints on consumption would come into effect with limits on purchases. “The most likely restricted retailing scheme would involve setting a maximum transaction value,” says Mr Forrest. “The Mad Max scenario is something that would probably be a little far-fetched, however we already see that when there
The Mad Max scenario is probably a little far-fetched, however we already see that when there is a line-up for cheap fuel some people have difficulty maintaining their sense of humour ...
Planning for peak oil Peak oil refers to a point in time when the global production of oil reaches its maximum rate, after which production will gradually decline as supplies become more difficult and costly to access. Scientists disagree on when we might reach the “end of the oil” era but most agree on the need to develop alternatives. The Australian Association for the Study of Peak Oil warns that global oil production has been static since 2005 and is forecast to start declining within the next few years. RAC Manager Vehicles and Fuels Alex Forrest says there are lots of ways motorists can reduce their fuel consumption, regardless of whether there is a supply disruption. He says measures like accelerating gently and driving within the speed limit are very simple ways to save fuel and money. Getting rid of big bulky roof racks when not in use, limiting the load in your car by emptying the boot, keeping the correct pressure in your tyres and minimising unnecessary car trips are some other quick and easy ways to bring down your fuel bill and conserve fuel resources, he says.

is a line-up for cheap fuel some people have difficulty maintaining their sense of humour, so that is something that would need to be managed under a supply shortage scenario. “The committee has gone as far as thinking about putting security on sites where fuel was being rationed out. “There are a lot of what-ifs involved in this sort of thing and until we really know what the situation is we can’t put a specific plan in place to respond to that.” Mr Forrest says the eastern seaboard has seen a significant reduction in its capacity to produce fuel in the last few years, with the closure of a number of refineries. “WA is slightly better off just because of the size of the BP Kwinana refinery, the biggest in Australia. That does make WA a little less susceptible to changes internationally but that refinery still imports its crude oil and still needs imports from overseas to meet demand in WA and elsewhere.”
Planning ahead WA’s contingency plans for a fuel shortage are set out in Westplan – Liquid Fuel Supply Disruption, a public document first released in 2011. The plan is designed to limit the impact of any fuel shortage on consumers, conserve resources and ensure emergency services can continue to operate. A spokeswoman for the WA Department of Finance’s Public
Utilities Office, which oversees the plan, says demand for fuel products in WA is met by production from the BP Kwinana refinery and imports of crude and refined product from overseas. “Fuel stockholdings form part of that supply profile and are managed by the respective oil companies,” the spokeswoman says. “Oil companies regularly review stock levels to assess whether demand and market characteristics have changed sufficiently to warrant changes in stock levels and storage capacity at individual locations.” Mr Forrest says the exact amount of fuel in stock at any point in time is difficult to quantify because the oil companies tend to keep it a closely guarded secret for commercial reasons. He says the best estimation would put WA’s stockpiles at close to 50 days’ supply, making the state better prepared than some others. “For individuals, reducing their reliance on vehicles for commuting may reduce the immediate impact to them from any fuel supply disruption. However, it is the preparedness of government and its agencies, fuel companies and the liquid-fuel supply chain, which would help mitigate the impact of a fuel-supply disruption. “There is capacity for the supply chain to absorb any small disruption but with anything bigger we are doing our best to ensure that it is managed and mitigated in the best way possible.” l
The best estimation would put WA’s stockpiles at close to 50 days’ supply, making the state better prepared than some others.
Running on charcoal A fuel crisis brought on by high petrol prices in the 1930s and by liquid fuel rationing during WW2 saw many Australians use their practical skills to make sure they could still use their cars, trucks and tractors. Devices known as gas producers – big metal drums mounted on a trailer or on the vehicle itself – were a popular way of getting cars back on the road and according to the Motor Museum of Western Australia, home-made gas producers, fuelled by charcoal, could run vehicles at up to 60 per cent of the motor’s capacity. Not all gas producers were home-made - some enterprising companies began manufacturing them for sale too. When rationing finally ceased in 1949, most gas producers were sold for scrap or consigned to the rubbish heap. “People were glad to see the back of them,” says museum curator John Mclean. “Running a gas producer was a messy and dirty job.” The museum has a rare trailer-mounted gas producer constructed by bush mechanic Bob Liddle at Southern Cross in its collection. The trailer was towed behind Mr Liddle’s ex-Black and White Taxis’ 1939 Dodge sedan and is on display in its original condition.

Story Virginia Millen
10 years of service More than a decade after the service began, the RAC Rescue helicopter has gone from strength to strength, reports Virginia Millen.
T
he RAC Rescue helicopter is Western Australia’s only dedicated 24-hour air ambulance helicopter delivering vital search and rescue and critical care medical services 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Managed by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services and funded by the state government, with sponsorship from the RAC, the helicopter and its crew have saved hundreds of lives during its 10 years of service. Since its inception, the RAC Rescue helicopter team has included the helicopter and flight crews supplied by contractor CHC Helicopters, with aviation-trained critical care paramedics seconded from St John Ambulance. Base manager and pilot Andy Greenall has worked for the service since it began. “More than 10 years ago, the Western Australian Government identified a need for a
dedicated emergency rescue helicopter service. Prior to that, there was a service of sorts, but not one dedicated as a rescue and air ambulance helicopter,” says Mr Greenall. With an operating range of 200 kilometres from Perth, the service covers 90 per cent of WA’s population and can be airborne within 15 minutes of receiving an incident call. In exceptional circumstances it may even operate beyond that 200-kilometre range. Mr Greenall says the biggest change to the way the helicopter has been used during its 10 years of service is the frequency with which it is dispatched. In its first year of service it undertook just 164 missions. Since December 2003 it has undertaken more than 3700 missions. Last year saw the highest number of missions ever recorded in a single year, with the helicopter undertaking 510 missions, the first time in the service’s history that more

than 500 missions were flown in a year. Based at Jandakot airport, on the southern side of Perth, the service undertakes three types of missions: Primary missions involve flying critical-care specialists straight to the scene of an incident, including car and motorcycle crashes, and then transporting the injured directly to hospital; the helicopter’s secondary role is to provide essential hospital transfers; and its search and rescue role can include searching for missing people, maritime operations in support of the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, or attending cliff or sea rescues.
The challenges Mr Greenall says some of the most challenging missions are the ones where the weather is inclement or night is falling. “Moving platforms, such as boats, are always fairly hard work, especially if the conditions aren’t good, if there’s poor weather or it’s getting close to dark,” he says. “Going out and trying to find lone walkers is another challenge,” he says. On one mission, Mr Greenall, the pilot and his crew, an air-crewman and a St John Ambulance critical care paramedic, who is also trained as rescue crewman, had to lower a winch in the dark to rescue a walker, who was suffering from exposure and heart problems. “It was a good all-round crew operation because it involved all of us in different aspects,” he says. RAC Sponsorship Manager Carina Lauder says the RAC is committed to ensuring the emergency rescue helicopter service will continue its vital role in the West Australian community. “The service is a prime example of our commitment to assisting people in times of need,” she says. “RAC Rescue is at the core of what the RAC stands for in terms of helping West Australians.” l

Test drive Alex Forrest reviews the latest cars on our roads.
Subaru WRX
W
hen the longawaited fourthgeneration WRX finally arrived on Australian shores in March this year, it didn’t just have a strong rallying heritage to uphold. It had to show that it had moved with the times. Along with performing in a manner befitting its sporting reputation, the new WRX needed high levels of build finish, refinement, fuel efficiency, safety and value – everything consumers expect of a new car in 2014. Subaru was the first manufacturer in Australia to have five-star ANCAP safety ratings for all the models in its range, and the new WRX follows and adds to that tradition. Now it has
seven airbags including one for the driver’s knees. The manual WRX is also 11.5 per cent more fuel efficient than its predecessor, and it also emits 13.8 per cent less carbon dioxide. At the heart of the WRX, just like all those which came before it, is a turbo-charged boxer engine. For 2014, it has been reduced in size to 2 litres. The previous WRX had a 2.5-litre engine. Despite this, the smaller engine has slightly higher outputs than its predecessor, with 197kW (up 2kW) and 350Nm (up 7Nm). More significantly, the new engine’s peak torque output arrives much lower in the rev range, from 2,400rpm, a trait that makes the car much more tractable and fun to drive at lower speeds.
There were three other big bits of news that came with the new WRX. Firstly, the manual version now finally has a sixth gear – a well-overdue addition but better late than never. Secondly, it’s available with an automatic gearbox: a continuously variable transmission (CVT), to be precise. This news left many enthusiasts groaning in unison because of the (mostly
deserved) reputation for CVTequipped cars to sound and feel like they have a slipping clutch. The WRX’s CVT isn’t like that. In fact, it does a largely convincing impression of a normal torque-converter auto. Finally, the announcement of the WRX’s entry-level price shocked everyone in the room when it was announced at the car’s launch: $38,990. That’s $1,000 less than the WRX’s price in 1994. l

Toyota Kluger Grande
Y
ou know how a new suit and shoes can make you walk taller and feel good inside and out? Well, the new Toyota Kluger is a bit like that. Under the skin, it has the same engine as before but the Kluger’s bold new body design, its new six-speed gearbox and revamped interior give it a whole new attitude, even though its heart is the same. This third generation Kluger is now built solely in the United States, although the Australia-bound versions have their steering and suspension especially tuned to suit our tastes and our roads. There’s more space inside thanks to the body being slightly longer and wider, and Toyota

engineers have also adopted a more compact double wishbone rear suspension set-up, which is more space efficient than the previous model’s. This means the third row of seats could be moved so they’re easier to access, and there’s now much more room once occupants get in them. Externally, the Kluger’s new, more aggressive-looking bodywork is a result of its North American design influences. The old Kluger’s excellent build quality continues in the new one, despite the vehicle originating from a country not renowned for its expertise in this area. The entry-level front-wheel drive GX model starts at $46,300 drive away, ranging
Price driveaway (as tested) Engine Power Torque Claimed fuel economy ANCAP safety rating CO 2 emissions
up to $76,200 for the rangetopping all-wheel-drive Grande. All new Klugers have sixspeed automatic gearboxes, enabling a slight improvement in fuel efficiency over the previous five-speed model. Any reduction in the Kluger’s thirst is welcome, as this is its major downside. The official figure of 10.4L/100km looks reasonable, but this engine is big and willing to rev, which can send consumption up to well over 15L/100km around town. Standard safety features on all

new Kluger models include a reversing camera, rear parking sensors and seven airbags. Of particular importance are the Kluger’s side-curtain airbags, which extend all the way to the third row. That cannot be said of all family vehicles and Toyota should be commended for this. The Kluger can be had with a pre-collision alert system (it’ll warn the driver but won’t automatically apply the brakes), but you’ll have to splash out for the Grande to get it. l August / September 2014 Horizons 47

Kia Soul Si
F
or people who like labelling and categorisation, the Kia Soul is a frustrating little misfit. Is it a hatchback, a baby SUV or a shrunk-in-the-wash van? Regardless of what you call it, its looks are an absolute standout and after its introduction in 2009, the first generation found a niche comprising 1779 buyers. The badge snobs stayed away from it, but those who bought one received a fuel-efficient, safe, roomy and rather rare little van-hatch, or whatever they chose to call it. It even had speakers that flashed coloured lights in time with the music. Now, we have the new Soul and it’s a little more grown up than its flashy predecessor.
There’s only one model grade (the Si), one engine (a 2.0-litre petrol) and no disco speakers. The new Soul echoes much of its predecessor’s looks, but it doesn’t share any body panels with the old one. Many of the changes in the new Soul were inspired by a Kia concept car called the Track’ster, which first appeared in early 2012. Apostrophe abuse aside, the Track’ster was a dramatically styled coupe that gave the new Soul its distinctive tail lights, lower air intake and the ‘floating’ body-colour panel that’s inset into the tailgate. Inside the new Soul, there is slightly more head and shoulder room compared with the old one (up by 6mm and 7mm respectively), and there’s also a bit more cargo space in the boot.
Under the skin, the new Soul is based on the current Cerato, which means upgraded suspension and a better ride compared to the previous Soul. The engine is a non-turbo unit and although quiet at low speeds and very efficient, it lacks torque in the lower rev range, and needs to be revved past 4,000rpm to get any reasonably spirited performance. There’s also a choice of six-
speed manual or automatic transmissions. The auto runs with a conventional torque converter. The Soul’s Cerato genetics also mean it gets Kia’s FlexSteer function, which allows drivers to adjust the weighting of the steering. Pricing starts at $23,990 plus on-road costs for the manual Si, while the auto version we tested is $25,990 plus on-roads. l

Jaguar F-Type V6S
I
f you ever get the opportunity to drive a Jaguar F-Type, just walk around it first. Enjoy its external beauty and the silence, because when you drive it, you’ll have access to neither. You will have a few other things to enjoy when you’re driving it though. Such as the exquisite interior and dials that dance in time with an exhaust note which crackles and whips the air like it’s trying to rip it in half. The long-awaited Jaguar F-Type started life as the C-X16 concept, stirring enthusiasts worldwide when it was first shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2011. Australians were finally able to buy the production version in September 2013, and like
all good things, it was worth the wait. From the time the C-X16 appeared, enthusiasts compared the F-Type to the classic E-Type from the 1960s and ‘70s, which was followed by the XJ-S, XK8 and the XK. The F-Type is the most focused sports car of all the above. It’s strictly a two-seater. In the boot, there’s room for little more than a toothpick and a nail file but like the original E-Type, it is perfectly proportioned. On the road, its handling is addictively involving, removing all doubt that Jaguar is looking to claw some sales away from the Porsche 911. The F-Type is also about the theatrics of driving such a decadent sports car. When you unlock it, the flush door handles pop out. At 100km/h,
the rear spoiler rises. Turn on the ventilation fan, and the vents rise out of the dashboard. Press a button, and the exhaust note deepens threateningly. Very few non-living things can make you feel as good as the F-Type can. The entry level F-Type has a 3.0-litre supercharged V6 with 250kW and starts from $138,645. Next
up, the V6S has the same engine but with software changes that help it pump out 280kW, which starts from $171,045. For most sane people, that is plenty. However, you can also choose the $201,945 supercharged V8 F-Type, which with 364kW, makes enough noise and power to pull the sky down. l

amazing new blue-block sunglasses drivingsunglasses
"They looked like ordinary sunglasses, but I got the surprise of my life when I put them on ..." I FOUND I could see right through glare with a striking clarity. Everything appeared sharper, crisper and more defined - like a kind of enhanced 3D effect. And colours were much brighter, vibrant and more ‘alive’. I kept taking them off and putting them on again to make sure that what I was seeing was actually sharper, and not just my imagination playing tricks on me. But the improvement was definitely there. It was obvious. I then put on my $160 sunglasses to compare. They were dull, blurry and glarey - no comparison. I was impressed. But why did these BLOK® sunglasses make such a big difference? I discovered there are two reasons ....
Firstly:
And most importantly, it’s how the sun’s blue rays affect the retina in your eyes. Your retina is like the film in old cameras, it captures images. And because blue rays are so short in the visible spectrum, they land just in front of your retina, not directly on it, as do other colours. This causes what scientists refer to as Chromatic Aberration or "Blue Blur" - a chaotic scattering of blue rays that obstruct and dilute every other colour as it enters your eye. They believe this results in reduced visual sharpness, eyestrain and fatigue. BLOK® lenses filter these blue rays, allowing all colours to focus clearly on your retina. So colours are enhanced and objects appear much sharper and clearer*, even in low light conditions. And because they are no longer battling blue rays, you’ll immediately notice a soothing, relaxation effect on your eyes - no matter how extreme the sunlight.
Secondly:
*Interestingly, it is thought that natural oil filters found in
the eyes of eagles do much the same thing.

Preserving the Alfa Romeo tradition Alfa Romeo’s long-awaited 4C sports car should be in Australian showrooms by the time this issue of Horizons is mailed out. The 4C promises to recall three of the most treasured Alfa Romeo traditions: beautiful styling, great handling and of course, rear-wheel drive. Priced from approximately $80,000, initial versions of the two-seater 4C will have a mid-mounted 1.75-litre turbo four-cylinder engine-making 177kW and 350Nm. Gear changes will be taken care of by Alfa’s TCT automatic twin-clutch transmission. While the 4C is full of modern sports-car technology, its name harks back to the legendary 8C and 6C sports and grand touring cars of the 1930s. A convertible version of the 4C is due to arrive in Australia in 2015.

Horizons-AUG14
It wasn’t long ago that high-intensity discharge lamps were the latest thing in vehicle headlights, but even they became old hat in 2008 when Audi introduced LEDs (light-emitting diodes) as the main light source for its supercar, the R8. Now, BMW and Audi have announced new cars with laser headlights. It sounds like the car Star Wars character Luke Skywalker might drive to the shops when he runs out of milk, but neither manufacturer is looking for a role in a science fiction movie. BMW’s laser high beams will be available on the i8 hybrid supercar when it becomes available later this year, while Audi was the first to bring laser high beams to market when its R8 LMX went on sale in May.

Land Roving art When Land Rover enthusiast Mark Davis bought this early 1970s Series 3 example of the marque, it was in desperate need of restoration. Earlier this year, he finished restoring the vintage off-roader but left one major part – the paint job – just as he found it. Mr Davis bought the Land Rover as a wreck from an Aboriginal elder, who had driven it around Australia three times. During that time, as the elder stayed at different communities, his hosts painted Dreamtime stories on the Landy’s body panels. Mr Davis said the elder allowed him to purchase the Land Rover on the basis that the paintings would remain on the vehicle. The distinctive Land Rover makes regular appearances on the classic car show circuit in WA. Updated Nissan X-Trail The last X-Trail was a huge sales success for Nissan Australia, but a major update was overdue by the time this third generation model arrived earlier this year. The new X-Trail introduces an all-new body style that echoes other models in the current line-up such as the Pathfinder. It also introduces a seven-seat option. Engine choices at launch comprised only two petrols – a 2.0-litre and a 2.5-litre, although Nissan has said a 1.6-litre diesel would become available in September 2014. Watch out for a road test in an upcoming edition of Horizons.

Ask the car doctor
Our experts answer your questions
Which speed reading is right?
Q
On the occasions I have used the GPS unit in my Volkswagen Tiguan I have noticed the speed readout on the GPS is about 4km/h less than that shown on the digital speedometer of my car. So which reading is more true to the real speed, the car’s speedometer or the GPS? Vincent W.T. Kong, Riverton
A:
Theoretically, GPS can be very accurate; however in practice GPS accuracy can vary depending on variables such as the terrain of the area you’re driving through, the presence of tall buildings, weather conditions, electrical interference and the number of satellites available to the GPS system (a minimum of three, preferably four). These factors can affect the consistency of the GPS reading, but you are correct in that the GPS-indicated speed is on average, slightly lower than on your vehicle’s speedo. The Australian Design Rules require that a vehicle’s speedo must not indicate a speed less than the vehicle’s true speed or a speed greater than the vehicle’s true speed by an amount more than 10 per cent plus 4 km/h. This means that the vehicle’s true speed must not be higher than the speed indicated by the speedo. That is, at a true vehicle speed of 100km/h, the speedo must read between 100km/h and 114km/h. An alternative way to look at it is; at an indicated speed of 100km/h, the vehicle’s true speed must be between 86 km/h and 100km/h. Generally speaking, on modern cars the true speed is only a few km/h less that the indicated speed. GPS speed readings can be accurate, but not always. It is therefore recommended that you use your vehicle’s speedo for a consistent indication of speed.
You can be a winner If your question is published you will receive a copy of the new UBD Gregory’s 2015 Perth and Surrounds Street Directory from RAC Travel, which includes new streets and suburbs, petrol station locations and more. See page 79 for terms and conditions of entry.
Power lock
Q
I have read that if a vehicle is in a locked garage, it is good practice to lock the vehicle to help retain battery charge. The rationale is that after the key is removed, many computers and accessories continue to run and they don’t power down until the vehicle is locked. If this is correct, could a car’s armed security system consume more battery power than the ‘active’ computers and accessories in an unlocked car? Robert Barham, Brigadoon
A: The modern vehicle
needs to be locked when not in use. The locking process advises the computers in the vehicle that they are no longer required. In this “sleep” mode the power consumption is at its minimum. Depending on the vehicle manufacturer, if not locked, a vehicle’s computers will stay in “standby” mode and continue to consume
extra power. If left in “standby” mode, most modern vehicles will monitor the electrical system and if over a period of time there is no usage it will shut down devices and enter “sleep” mode.
Downhill dilemma
Q
My partner often uses the gears in our hatchback to slow the car going downhill as opposed to using the brakes. Is this a good idea? Does it save the brakes? Silvio Wirth, South Perth
A:
Using engine braking is recommended for very long downhill descents. It saves brake wear and more importantly, it helps prevent the brakes from overheating. However, for short downhill runs such as on suburban streets, and when the car isn’t carrying a heavy load or towing a trailer, there is no need to use the gears given the high efficiency of the brakes on most late-model cars.

Tassie rescue RAC member Susan initially joined Roadside Assistance to cover her travel between Augusta and Perth, but her membership ended up assisting her much further from home. During a caravanning holiday in Tasmania, Susan and her husband found themselves in a tricky breakdown situation. “We were half way up a mountain and about 100km outside Launceston. The turbo on our four-wheel drive blew up in a cloud of smoke and loss of power. We were stranded!” Susan called the RAC Roadside Assistance team in Perth who immediately organised help. “Within half an hour a tow truck arrived, put the four-wheel drive on the back of the truck and towed the caravan into Launceston. The caravan was dropped off at the local caravan park, the four-wheel drive was
dropped off at the mechanics and I was deposited at the hire-car provider. RAC Roadside Assistance covered the towing of the four-wheel drive and caravan and the rental of the car. “Your very competent and helpful team made it possible for my husband and I to continue to enjoy our holiday during the repair period and afterwards. We thoroughly recommend RAC Roadside Assistance to anyone planning to travel in regional WA or interstate.” Susan was lucky to have the RAC’s Ultimate Roadside Assistance, the recommended cover for those towing a caravan.

2014 marks a decade since RAC Auto Services began operating in Perth. The service was launched to provide Perth motorists with a trusted car servicing operation staffed by highly skilled auto service mechanics, and to ensure high safety standards were maintained in all cars serviced. The first centre opened in Balcatta in September 2004. Today RAC Auto Services has grown to a network of nine centres across Perth, stretching from Joondalup in the north to Mandurah in the south. Each year our mechanics service more than 50,000 vehicles, keeping them in peak condition to ensure their safety and reliability on the road. Our reputation and expertise in vehicle servicing means an honest assessment of your car, whether it’s in need of servicing or repairs, and a commitment to its ongoing maintenance.
To celebrate its 10th anniversary, RAC Auto services is offering RAC members a free vehicle safety check between 8 September and 12 September, 2014. You can drop into any one of our nine centres during that week between 10am and 2pm to receive your free vehicle safety check. For more info call 1300 652 451 or visit rac.com.au/ freesafetycheck. WINTER WEAKENS BATTERIES Each winter as the temperature drops, the number of calls to RAC Roadside Assistance for battery-related problems can increase by up to 30 per cent. In cold weather, using window de-misters, internal heating, windscreen wipers and leaving headlights on for longer puts more strain on your battery, which over time can cause it to go flat or even fail. Using less of these internal accessories often isn’t practical. One way to keep your battery healthy during winter is to use a CTEK 8 Stage Car Battery Charger to keep it fully charged. If you do find yourself with a dead battery this winter call RAC Batteries on 13 11 11 to arrange a replacement. Delivery and installation is free for members and available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.* For more information about battery chargers visit rac.com.au/ motoring/car-batteries and go to the charger section.

Choosing the best landlords’ insurance You’ve worked hard for your investment property so getting the right insurance cover is essential. Even with the best tenants unexpected problems can arise. So it pays to ensure you’re adequately protected and that you understand exactly what you are covered for as policies can vary considerably. While price is important, cheap cover may give you insufficient coverage when it comes to a claim so be cautious. You should also make sure you have the right level of cover. Remember, your landlords’ insurance is often tax deductible so it’s not worth the risk of leaving your property underinsured for the sake of saving a few dollars. Watch out for varying excess levels when comparing policies. Also, check that your policy covers malicious damage caused by the tenant.
RAC landlords’ insurance will give you: l Up to 12 months’ cover for loss of rent if your
investment property can’t be occupied after an insured event, such as fire or flood. l Up to $10,000 cover for theft or malicious damage caused by your tenants or their guests. l Cover for loss of rent if your tenant defaults on their payments after four weeks. l Cover for accidental glass breakage. WA’s high break-in rate Western Australia has the highest rate of break-ins and attempted break-ins of all states, according to the 2014 Report on Government Services. Behind those figures are many victims of crime who have lost more than just their property. Even after belongings are replaced and damage is repaired, feelings of fear and vulnerability can continue to affect many householders following a break-in or even an attempted break-in. Your family’s safety is everything, and while most householders take sensible precautions,
achieving an optimal level of home security means employing a range of measures as well as changing behaviour and routines. Adding an extra level of protection with a home alarm system can help you sleep easier and feel more confident when you’re away from home. Today’s alarms have many sophisticated features, which will ensure a high level of protection around your property. To find out more, talk to one of our home security experts on 1300 131 578 or visit rac.com.au/security.

Authentic Period Detail Sets the Scene Meticulously hand-crafted by our Master Artisans, the clock comes alive with memories of a time when the FJ was king of the road! There’s even a couple of authentic period petrol pumps outside! A precision quartz movement powers the clock, and at the top of every hour watch as an FJ rolls out from the garage, accompanied by a real engine sound! It’s a celebration of 1950s Holden, every hour!

Since its release in 1953, the Holden FJ transformed the way we live. More than a car, it has become a shining symbol of the post war years – colourful, fast and ready to drive Australia forward into a new age of prosperity. Sixty years later, the FJ still represents the best of Holden and the golden years of the lucky country. Now, you can enjoy both again every minute of the day in the “Holden FJ Anniversary Clock,” only from The Bradford Exchange.
