A new year with new challenges and new opportunities There is no question that 2013 has been a hectic and at times challenging year. We have seen a hard-fought state election, followed by a lengthy federal election campaign, and our country has been led by three different prime ministers. And that’s just on the political scene. As we approach Christmas and a new year there will hopefully be time to reflect on the past 12 months, draw strength from our family and friends, renew our spirits, gather our thoughts and recalibrate our goals before life once again leads us off at a frenetic pace. As L M Montgomery, the author of Anne of Green Gables, once noted, “Isn’t it nice to think that tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it yet?” With the year 2013 fading we look to the continuing sense of optimism and confidence that underpins and pervades our Western Australian community. For all the challenges of 2013, there is still no question that we will move forward to better times in 2014. I like to think that mistakes can be opportunities and challenges will lead us to a better way of doing things. And there will be significant challenges. The RAC was the first voice to raise the alarm about the impact our rapidly increasing population growth was having on traffic congestion and how this, in turn, could strain our economy and our quality of life. We’ve made significant progress in establishing this issue on the public policy agenda but there are no easy or quick-fix solutions. These problems are not going to go away nor be resolved overnight. We need to ensure we maintain the political will to deliver the road, public transport and cycling projects

required to keep Western Australians moving and on the go in their daily lives. In a sense, we are playing catch-up because of the mistakes made in the past when we, as a community, failed to adequately plan and invest in this area. Similarly, too many families in our community will be missing loved ones or have family seriously injured this Christmas because we haven’t done enough to make our roads safe for all road users. This will be an ongoing challenge that will be a personal priority for me over the next three years. But whatever mistakes we made yesterday or today, tomorrow is what we make of it. As I begin my term as President of the RAC, I am humbled by the honour, grateful to my predecessor, Tim Shanahan, and mindful of the responsibility of leading one of WA’s oldest and most respected community organisations. But above all, I am optimistic and confident that we will continue to play a leading role in helping to create a better Western Australia. So, on behalf of my colleagues on the RAC Council, I wish all of our members and their family and friends a safe and happy Christmas and New Year. And remember, please take extra care of you and yours on our roads at this time. l

Our winning letter Learner drivers

Cycle safety

My 18-year-old daughter is currently on her L-plates and as a parent, and often her supervisor, I would like to comment on some drivers’ behaviour. We live in the country so she is practising her driving skills in town as well as on the open road between towns. A couple of weeks ago, we twice faced a very dangerous situation. The first time, as we approached a small town, my daughter dropped her speed to 90km/h, as indicated by a road sign, when a lady decided to overtake us at high speed on a double white line. Shortly afterwards, another car overtook us , but this time, with approaching traffic and a double white line, we had to slow right down to let the car pass. I urge road users to show more patience and be aware that L-platers often lack the experience and knowledge to deal with dangerous situations. We often complain about the bad driving habits of young drivers so be a good role model on the road and show them the correct driving skills and behaviour. Finally, I would like to highly recommend the Keys for Life program to students and parents. My other daughter participates in this program through her school and I recently attended a workshop for parents. The program promotes safer driving, getting a driver’s licence and the benefits of driving practice.

I cycle to and from work on average three days per week. I have been doing so for more than 10 years. Each day I ride means one less car on our roads. I don’t want a medal, but I desperately want to see improved bike-car safety on our roads. Sure, there is a small element of cyclists with ‘attitude’ and dangerous motorists too, but the majority of us just want to travel safely each day. If we accept that bicycles and cars have to share the road, then surely a sensible starting point is road-user education to promote consideration and safe driving? On a recent cycling holiday in Portugal and Spain the mutual respect between driver and cyclist was a revelation – so different to the aggression often experienced on Perth roads. Millions continue to be spent on TV campaigns against drink-driving and speeding. What about a simple bike-car education campaign? Let’s stop ignoring the problem and deal with it.

Lovely lemon memories I really enjoyed your article Loving the lemons (Horizons October/November). It brought back so many memories of those nerve-wracking jaunts where one would set out with no reliable expectation of completing the journey or even making it safely back home! Why did we do it? Hard to say, but it’s interesting to note that some of the most collectible cars around today are the ‘orphans’; many of them the cars with all the worst character flaws. (There are car clubs worldwide filled with fanatics worshipping Edsels, Corvairs, Isettas, TR7’s, and many more models so awful that they that should logically have sunk into obscurity). A girlfriend of mine bought a metallic blue American Pacer with a white interior hot off the assembly line in 1975. It was the prettiest car, in spite of its poor build quality, and we went everywhere in it, turning heads as we drove. Its styling was quite eyecatching. Unfortunately, the extra-long doors, a highly

desirable feature according to the ads, proved to be far too heavy, soon sagged badly, and would always refuse to shut properly after a few months of use. This was disappointing and resulted in large numbers of Pacers appearing on used car lots, traded in for more conventional transport. I often wonder if that little car my girlfriend owned is being cherished in some Pacer car club somewhere...wouldn’t surprise me. Charmain Pomfret, via email

Faded rego plates In response to the email from Lynley Davey (Horizons, October/November) regarding faded rego plates, the plates on my wife’s 2001 car were badly faded. As a last resort I tried car polish, and this completely removed the white film over the letters. It turns out they were not faded, it was just oxidised paint. Other readers may like to try this before going to the expense of getting new registration plates. Ian Hunt, via email

Snapshot News in brief from the RAC & beyond

$ You can replace all these cars with this many cyclists or pedestrians.

Cyclists and walkers are winners These images taken on High Street in Fremantle are a powerful visual reminder of the huge impact single‑occupant cars have on congestion. The images are part of a series recreating a famous photo taken more than 20 years ago in Muenster, Germany, which compared the space needed to transport an equal number of people by car, bus, bicycle and by foot. The project was supported by RAC’s Community Sponsorships program, as part of the 2013 Walk Over October campaign, which raised awareness of the many benefits of regular walking. The congestion photos were a partnership project between the Heart Foundation, State Government, RAC and Healthier Workplace WA, with support from the City of Fremantle.

Holiday fuel saving Before you head off on your Christmas holiday road trip, make sure your car’s servicing is up to date so you and your family stay safe when travelling long distances at highway speeds. A well‑maintained car will run more efficiently and be less likely to develop problems which may leave you stranded when you’re far from home. Once you’re away from city and town centres the choice of fuel outlets is often limited and prices are generally higher but there are some things you can do to reduce your fuel use.

Fuel‑saving checklist

Check tyre pressure frequently

– keeping your car’s tyres at their correct pressure ensures an optimum balance of tyre grip and fuel efficiency

Reduce loads and avoid the need

for roof racks - extra weight increases the consumption of fuel as does increased wind resistance

Don’t warm up your engine before

starting off - modern cars generally no longer need to be warmed up before starting off, only in extremely cold conditions

Accelerate gently and keep your

speed constant - gentle driving uses less fuel and is safer

Use air conditioning only when

necessary - AC takes power directly from the engine, increasing fuel consumption. l

New app to connect with cars

Mixing music with road safety The West Australian Symphony Orchestra’s WASO on the Road tour visited the Wheatbelt and Great Southern regions and was supported by the RAC Community Sponsorships program. A number of free community concerts saw the trio mix Handel and Beethoven with a road safety message. The tour also included six school workshops, which addressed the importance of wearing a seatbelt. RAC Sponsorship Manager Carina Lauder said support for the tour was part of the $415,000 already provided to local communities since the RAC’s Community Sponsorships program began in 2011. “As the State’s largest road safety advocate, we are committed to reducing road fatalities and are always looking for new ways to spread the road safety message. “Last year, the Wheatbelt’s fatality rate was six times as high as the State average, while the Great Southern fatality rate was twice as high as the metropolitan average.” The next round of Community Sponsorships closes on 24 February 2014. To find out more download our Community Sponsorships Handbook from rac.com.au/sponsorship

The RAC is trialling a new technology via an iphone app that will connect with a device installed in your car, providing details about your car’s health, trip history and how well you’re using fuel.

The app will also provide live fuel prices, parking locations and traffic and congestion information. We’ll keep you up to date with the trial’s progress and let you know when the app and device might become available. l

60˚celsius This is how high the temperature inside a parked car can get on a 30˚celsius day Leaving your kids in the car, even if you’ll only be gone a short time, is never a safe option and can be especially dangerous during the summer months, with kids particularly susceptible to heat stress, dehydration and heat-stroke. Your pet’s health can also be endangered if left in a hot car.

Fresh approaches to traffic signals Work commissioned by the RAC is investigating possible solutions to better manage congestion in perth through new approaches to traffic signals. Main Roads WA is a key partner in the project and the RAC’s analysis and report, undertaken by Aurecon Consulting, is aimed at highlighting where traffic signals are working well and where processes could be improved for the benefit of all road users. The study applied an alternate approach to test a series of traffic signal options at two demonstration sites, Kelvin Road / Tonkin Highway, and Orrong Road. RAC’s Manager of Transport planning, Anne Still, said the early signs were promising. “Both sites demonstrated a range of impacts, including potential traffic flow efficiencies of up to a 27 per cent reduction in vehicle delay. importantly it was demonstrated that some tested options could have a negative impact, highlighting the benefit of the alternate approach, using modelling to test options before they are implemented.” The study also highlighted that positive improvements can potentially be achieved with better use of existing technology and getting more from existing infrastructure. The RAC will continue to work with Main Roads WA to build on the findings of the study by testing them in the field. l December / January 2014 Horizons 11

Congestion still a cost for WA business perth businesses say traffic congestion is continuing to cut into their bottom line and its impact is being felt more widely by workers.

Award for innovative RAC road safety event

The second RAC BusinessWiseChamber of Commerce and Industry Congestion Survey has confirmed traffic congestion is taking an increasing toll on the productivity and profitability of business and is having an impact on their ability to recruit, manage and maintain staff. More than 400 small-tomedium businesses contributed to the 2013 survey, which revealed 83 per cent of respondents believe traffic congestion is having a negative impact on their operations, a result virtually unchanged from the 2012 survey. RAC External Engagement Manager Liz Carey said nearly all respondents (97.3%) reported

traffic congestion had increased the time their workers spent on the roads, up from 90 per cent in 2012. Businesses are facing higher fuel costs, lower productivity and the inability to take on more work. “Of particular concern are the implications for the safety of drivers spending longer hours on the road,” Ms Carey said. RAC BusinessWise Manager Emily Noteboom said understanding pressures on WA businesses was important. The RAC will use the results to advocate for increased and targeted government investment in road infrastructure, public transport and cycling to alleviate congestion. l

RAC’s bstreetsmart community education event for young people has been awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award for Community innovation by the injury Control Council of Western Australia. The unique one day event takes road safety learning out of the classroom and links it to real life situations, including a live crash re‑enactment attended by professional emergency services personnel. Students also gain a greater understanding of the psychological and emotional impacts of road trauma by hearing stories from those whose lives have been affected by it directly. Wayne Houden RAC Manager of Community Education said bstreetsmart relied on the combined efforts of many organisations. “bstreetsmart has been a success due to the fantastic collaborative support of Royal perth Hospital, St John Ambulance, Western Australian police and the Department of Fire and Emergency services. i wish for all these organisations to be recognised for this award too.” l

Ambulances to Timor-Leste The RAC recently helped the St John Ambulance Corps in WA transport two donated ambulances heading to TimorLeste by providing two tow trucks to assist with the first part of the journey through Perth, before the vehicles were shipped out of WA. RAC General Manager Corporate Affairs, Will Golsby said the RAC was pleased to

play a small role in the project. “The ambulances will assist the communities by providing access to medical clinics and moving patients requiring further treatment to hospital,” he said. The RAC also understands the ambulances will be used to supplement the National Ambulance Service in TimorLeste, which is under-resourced.

“...these hearing aids have given us our lives back” I read farmer Lindsay Olman’s story in the paper and thought he was right about choosing the audiologist before the hearing aid. I’ve experienced what seems to be a common story, with my hearing aids sitting in the proverbial top drawer for the last couple of years. Communication was difficult. I couldn’t wear them, they were just too uncomfortable, like a brick in my ear, and they didn’t help me hear well anyway. But now I’m proudly wearing new hearing aids prescribed by Brad and it’s a very different story. Both my wife Jean and I feel these hearing aids have given us our lives back. My history isn’t much different from a lot of people with industrial hearing loss. I worked as an engineer in a noisy factory, and was a drummer in a band in my youth. We knew nothing about protecting our hearing from the inevitable outcome of hearing loss. I enjoyed my work and loved my music and didn’t realise this could impact so much on my later life.

[I] was so impressed with my new ability to hear the full and rich sounds of the music, I turned my aids on and off a few times just to hear the difference. Now I’m retired and need to hear well, to enable me to do lots of meaningful volunteer work. I am a guide with the Rottnest Volunteer Guide Association and it’s really important for me to be able to respond to questions and join in on conversation whilst conducting a tour. My Wife and I are studying the Sanskrit language where it’s vital to

be able to hear and pronounce minute sound variations well. I also belong to a meditation group and was very surprised to hear for the first time the sounds of running water from a fountain in the established courtyard - it’s probably been there making that soft trickling noise since I joined. Best of all for me, two days after being fitted with my new hearing aids, I attended a West Australian Symphony Orchestra concert and was so impressed with my new ability to hear the full and rich sounds of the music, I turned my aids on and off a few times just to hear the difference. It was amazing. I’m very happy to have met Brad and his Staff and it’s fantastic to be hearing well again. I can’t recommend this hearing centre highly enough to anyone wanting a fresh start with their hearing. Peter Wyder

Travel Words Andrew Draffen Photography Corbis

ViVa Brazil As hosts of this year’s FIFA World Cup, Brazil will attract the attention of sports lovers world-wide. But as Andrew Draffen discovers, there’s much more to Brazil than football.

C

olonised by the Portuguese 500 years ago, Brazil is a vibrant country with many cosmopolitan cities, scores of picturesque colonial towns, an abundance of natural wonders and genuinely friendly people. Brazilians are a fascinating mix of Portuguese, African and indigenous cultures, and no people in the world know how to enjoy themselves more. They must be the most musical people on the planet – everywhere you’ll find superb

music and dancing. And of course the whole country celebrates Carnival in late February. For first-time visitors, the best way to discover the country is a group tour with an experienced guide. Outside the major cities, English is not widely spoken, so a bilingual guide is essential. You’ll save significant time and effort, and have more fun sharing experiences and caipirinhas (Brazil’s national drink – a mixture of rum, sugar, lime and ice that is simply delicious) with fellow travellers.

Iguaçu Falls, on the border of Brazil and Argentina, is a spectacular grouping of more than 275 thundering waterfalls.

While Rio de Janeiro is the jewel in the crown, there’s so much more to explore. Ideally, your tour should include some of the most interesting cities, a couple of colonial towns and some natural wonders. You’ll also need some free time to enjoy Brazil’s worldrenowned beaches. A two-hour flight north of Rio is Salvador, the centre of Afro-Brazilian culture. The lively historical centre is full of brightly coloured colonial architecture and baroque churches dripping with gold. For the locals, music and religion are as important as eating and sleeping. The music blends African and Brazilian traditions into a mind-blowing percussion. If you can, time your visit to include the weekly Tuesday-night street party. The religion combines a type of voodoo called Candomblé, with a

Travel

veneer of traditional Catholicism. A visit to see a Candomblé service, where worshippers go into a trance, is a must. Salvador is where you’ll savour some of the finest Brazilian food. A favourite dish is moqueca, a spicy seafood stew. And on every street corner you’ll find ladies wearing traditional huge hoop skirts and dangling necklaces selling acarajé – fritters made with brown beans and shrimp fried in palm oil. It’s the most popular fast food in Bahia. After exploring the city, cruise the island-studded Bay of All Saints, or visit Morro de São Paulo on the island of Tinharé, two hours by ferry from Salvador. Its sandy, carfree streets lead to some of the country’s most beautiful beaches, with small, beachfront restaurants offering lobster for lunch.

New York of the tropics São Paulo, less than an hour’s flight from Rio, is the largest city in South America with more than 20 million inhabitants. It’s known as the ‘New York of the Tropics’, and while it’s more of a business city than a tourist destination, travellers who visit can enjoy world-class restaurants, great nightclubs and interesting architecture. At sunset head to the restaurant at the top of Edificio Itália, the city’s tallest building, for a stunning view of skyscrapers in every direction. The city is home to more ethnic groups than any other part of Brazil, including the largest Japanese community outside Japan. The suburb of Liberdade offers restaurants serving excellent Japanese food, often with a tropical twist. Brasilia, the nation’s capital, is one and a half hour’s flying time from Rio. Carved out of the wilderness 50 years ago, it’s a modern city, with public buildings in the most avantgarde style. The city is striking, so take time to explore the major monuments and buildings.

A three-hour flight north of Brasilia is Manaus, the gateway to the Amazon – both river and rainforest. You’ll want to explore the city and use it as a base for trips into the rainforest and the river that dominates it. Not to be missed is the ‘meeting of the waters’, where the clear, reddish-brown waters of the Rio Negro run side by side with the muddy-brown water of the Rio Solimões for several kilometres until they finally merge to form the Amazon. It was the inspiration for the wavy, black-and-white tile-work in front of Manaus’ opera house – a scaled-down version of the Paris Opera and a throwback to the days when Manaus was the centre of a world-wide rubber boom. In the far west of Brazil lies the Pantanal, the world’s largest wetlands. Home to more than 600

Travel Getting there For more information about packages to Brazil and South America visit rac.com.au/travel or call 1300 655 179.

Fast facts Getting there species of birds, 350 kinds of fish and an abundance of reptiles and mammals, it’s the best place in Brazil to view wildlife. Take a trip down the Transpantaneira, an elevated roadway that runs deep into the Pantanal. Along its 145km length are 126 precarious bridges that are ideal for viewing wildlife. You can also spend a few days at a lodge offering horse rides and boat trips into the swamp. And you can even try your hand fishing for razor-toothed piranha! Iguaçu Falls, on the border of Brazil and Argentina, is a spectacular grouping of more than 275 thundering waterfalls. You can fly over them, take a boat ride next to them or stand under one – the Garganta do Diabo (Devil’s Throat). Everyone visiting Brazil comes here, and it’s set up well for the constant influx. You’ll need at least two days to fully experience the falls – one day on the Brazil side for the panoramic view and the other in Argentina to explore the waterfalls more intimately. Extending your trip outside Brazil, a hike in the Andes is worthwhile. The best-known trek in South America is the 3-5 day hike along the Inca Trail in Peru, following the old Inca roadway through high, mountain passes and tropical lowlands to Machu Picchu, the famed lost city of the Incas. Many adventure companies in the nearby city of Cuzco offer trips which include whitewater rafting,

Qatar Airways fly to São Paulo via Doha from Perth. Also Aerolineas Argentinas fly from Sydney to Buenos Aires, Argentina. Qantas and LAN fly to Santiago, Chile via Auckland. From both, it’s a short flight to Brazil.

Language Unlike the rest of Spanish-speaking South America, Brazilians speak Portuguese. Learn a few words and they will love you! Thumbs up is the ‘OK/good’ gesture.

climbing and hiking sections of the trail. The alternative is catching the train from Cuzco to Aguas Calientes and taking a bus up the mountain to Machu Picchu. Those flying to South America via Buenos Aires should spend a few days enjoying the ‘Paris of South America’. Eat a thick steak accompanied by a bottle of Malbec, take in a tango show and shop for leather goods. If possible, time your stopover to catch the wonderful Sunday antique market in the bohemian suburb of San Telmo. l

Australians need visas for Brazil. You’ll also need vaccinations against tropical diseases. Don’t forget to stay hydrated, drink plenty of bottled water or the local favourite, fresh coconut water

When to go Most of Brazil is in the tropics and its seasons are the same as Australia. The best times to go are in November/December and March/ April, when the weather is hot but not unbearable. Brazilians holiday in July and December to February, when prices rise for the high season and attractions become crowded.

Acclimatisation If the Inca Trail is on your itinerary, spend a couple of days getting used to the thin, high-altitude air around Cuzco, or you’ll quickly become exhausted.

Don’t miss Iguaçu Falls. Try to time your visit with a full moon. It’s unforgettable!

A feast for the senses

With its extraordinary natural beauty and vibrant, exciting culture, Rio de Janeiro has always fascinated travellers. Scott Podmore discovers all this exciting city has to offer.

A

s soon as you first set foot on Rio de Janeiro’s famous beaches expect to be hit by a colourful and exotic feast for the senses. On Ipanema and Copacabana the rhythms and addictive sounds of samba typically blast from speakers on the sand, people dance or play beach sport, and the famous oiled and tanned locals - with their minimalist approach to beachwear – provide an astonishing fashion and beauty parade. Ipanema beach has a spectacular outlook. To the

right it’s hard to miss Sugarloaf Mountain towering imposingly at the mouth of Guanabara Bay on a peninsula that fronts the mighty Atlantic Ocean. Look closely enough and you will notice people hiking, heading up to the famous gondola ride, or hang-gliding over the city for a bird’s-eye view. Whether it’s the beaches, the downtown buzz, adventurous food, entertainment, shopping, or day trips to the wilderness, Rio is an unforgettable city, and one every traveller should visit. There’s a gift shop and several viewing platforms around the statue to see the 360-degree spectacular views of Rio below. Music is an important part of any Rio experience. Best time to go From May to September when the rain is minimal and the temperature is in the 20s; Carnival occurs in late February each year. Unless you have tickets for the 2014 FIFA World Cup you may want to avoid the massive crowds that event will generate between 12 June and 13 July 2014.

Safety It pays to be cautious in Rio. For all that is beautiful and exotic, it’s equal parts dangerous: wander off too far into the confronting world of favelas (slums) and Rio suddenly doesn’t seem so beautiful, so always make sure you know where you’re going and what you’re doing.

To put your new skills to the test, follow the addictive sounds of bossa nova at Ipanema’s Vinicius Bar where you can dance the night away while sipping on refreshing Caipiroska cocktails or a Martini Bianco. All that’s enough to build an appetite for some great food. Any South American will tell you a stay in Rio requires a visit to the famous grill Porcão. Here waiters weave between patrons and tables – and each other – with trays of meats raised in the air with one hand and carving knives in the other. Shopping is best explored in Rio’s malls. Try Botafogo Praia Shopping for a big selection of shops and stellar views from the

Kill two birds with one stone by heading to the shopping strip on Copacabana and snap up Havaianas thongs for a steal before throwing them off again when you take a dip on the beautiful beach fronting the popular tourist zone. And, of course, then there's that little old event that comes around only once a year and attracts the eyes of the world – Carnival. It’s

White sand dreaming Stunning beaches, spectacular scenery and charming coastal towns make the turquoise waters north of Perth a favourite holiday destination. Kerry Faulkner unlocks its beguiling treasures.

A

road trip can be the most rewarding type of family holiday and the stunning stretch of coast from Perth to Kalbarri is easily one of Western Australia’s best. Most of this route follows the Indian Ocean Drive; a 355km ribbon of road hugging the Indian Ocean. Before the Drive was completed in September 2010, the Brand Highway, a loping inland road, was the only direct route between Perth and Dongara. The coast road is a spectacular

scenic route threading through a series of salt-of the-earth fishing towns, which are receiving increasing numbers of visits, thanks to the new road. On the stretch up to Jurien Bay the water is tinged turquoise and often fringed by crisp white beaches – hence the name Turquoise Coast – and it’s easy to see why water sports are popular along this stretch of coast. RAC’s Tourism Supervisor Courtney Bowen says the coast is a paradise for fishing, swimming, snorkelling and,

of course, windsurfing. The beaches are easily accessible and the towns offer a wide range of accommodation including high-quality caravan parks, many of which are accredited under the AAA Tourism Star rating system. Ms Bowen offers this advice too; Perth to Kalbarri via Indian Ocean Drive should not, cannot, be rushed. Take at least a week, if not more, to stop, relax and really soak up this beautiful Western Australian coastline. Guilderton is the first mustsee town on this road trip north.

reef in 1656 and sank. In 1931 a boy unearthed some of its treasure in the sand dunes, hence the town’s name. Further north, Lancelin remains one of the most blogged-about kitesurfing spots in the nation and four-wheel drives, their trailers packed with quads and dirt bikes, are evidence that the thrill of motoring across the massive sand dunes around here is another big attraction. Jurien Bay and Cervantes have positively thrived post-Indian Ocean Drive. At Cervantes a pretty blue and white kiosk with a vast grassy playground that bumps right into the beach provides a perfect family picnic spot. Part of this town’s big attraction is its location - an easy 15-minute drive from the Pinnacles - which attracts nearly 200,000 visitors a year to its lunar-like landscape

The Turquoise Coast takes its name from the clear waters around Jurien Bay. Lancelin remains one of the most blogged-about kitesurfing spots in the nation.

of tall limestone pillars moulded from seashells over millions of years of weathering. Sandy Cape Recreation Park between Jurien and Greenhead encapsulates the natural attractions of this part of the coast more than any other place. It is part of a marine sanctuary where sea lions feed on the reef and come to rest on the gentle curve of the white sandy beach. But the sanctuary doesn’t stop fishing altogether – in fact the campground is a magnet for fishermen aiming for mulloway, tailor or whiting in the gutters not far offshore.

Closer to heaven Arguably one of the best ways to appreciate the beauty of this coastline is from the air. Skydive Jurien Bay offers a breathtaking, adrenaline-pumping scenic flight ending with a jump out of an aircraft thousands of feet above the earth and a soft-sand beach landing. The Mid West’s crayfishing capital, Dongara, is one of the friendliest towns in WA and its pretty main street is beautifully shaded by enormous Moreton Bay fig trees. A drive into Dongara takes in two towns in one; the bridge over the Irwin River is the only thing separating Dongara from Port Denison, with its beautiful fishing-fleet-bobbing harbour. It’s on the Denison side of the bridge where travellers will find the caravan parks. The highway between Dongara and Geraldton marks a change in scenery, especially in spring when it is fringed with paddocks of bright yellow canola. Olive groves, historical Greenough Hamlet and natural curiosities such as the trees wind-whipped to grow horizontally, make ideal rest stops before hitting Geraldton. Population 38,000 plus, Geraldton is the hub of the Mid West, a city that has flourished December / January 2014 Horizons 25

in the last ten years thanks to a revamped waterfront. It is now home to a clique of cool cafés and a wildly popular water playground. The moving HMAS II Sydney Memorial, overlooking the city from Mount Scott, is a must– see even for those who usually shy away from museums or memorabilia. A lone bronze woman, her hand shielding her eyes against the sun’s glare, searches the horizon desperately. Behind her is the eye-catching steel dome, made of 645 seagull silhouettes, one for each man tragically lost when the HMAS Sydney II was torpedoed by the disguised German raider Kormoran in 1941 near Carnarvon. If time permits, the Railway Tavern at Northampton – unmistakable thanks to the giant “TAVERN” painted on the roof - is a worthy stop for dinner en-route from Geraldton to Kalbarri. It’s an historic pub with a restaurant quality menu, loads of country hospitality and if you’re stopping for the night, one of WA’s cutest caravan parks is straight across the road. The most scenic route to Kalbarri turns off at Northampton and heads to the coast. This route passes the Pink Lake, named for the hue made by carotenoid producing algae, the same pigments found in many fruits and vegetables.

Kalbarri is 587kms north of Perth with most of the route via Indian Ocean Drive (355kms), joining the Brand Highway just south of Dongara. Follow the highway to the Kalbarri turnoff at Northampton, 51kms north of Geraldton. The best time to travel is spring and early summer. Summer temperatures can reach into the 40s and afternoons often turn windy, so any outdoor activity is best scheduled for the morning. August and early September is the best time to see the wildflowers blossoming at their carpet-like best.

 Tackling the Holland Track by GPS RAC Travel’s Alison Peters recently set out on a four-wheel drive adventure to test the Hema HN6 navigation system on the Holland Track. The Holland Track was originally established in 1893 by pioneer John Holland and one hundred years later it was officially re-opened and is now a well-known four-wheel drive adventure. Alison started her Holland Track journey in Hyden, finishing four days later in Coolgardie. The Hema unit includes mapping for over 250,000 kilometres of outback roads and tracks across Australia so there was no issue finding mapping for this track and with great satellite coverage, pin-pointing her exact location was also easy. Alison found planning the trip was simple as the unit offers preloaded camping and caravanning sites and dump points plus the ability to drop waypoints along the journey. You can also use the system to keep a record of any great camping spots you happen to come across along the way. The Hema HN6 features a big six-inch high-resolution screen - essential when you’ve got lots to focus on outside your vehicle. “Planning, tracking and recording the trip was easy with the HN6,” Ms Peters said. “The mapping is very comprehensive. The information is also up-to-date which is comforting when you’re tackling a tougher drive.” To start planning your next driving adventure visit rac.com.au/holidayguides. A night with A booze bus

The front line for policing on our roads, booze buses help keep our roads safe, but as Jane Hammond reports, not everyone is getting the “don’t drink and drive” message.

I

t’s 8pm on a Friday night in inner-city Perth and members of the Breath and Drug Operations team are just warming up for a long night ahead. The crew of 15 WA police officers has set up a random breath testing (RBT) unit on Victoria Park Drive in Burswood and members of the public are being waved into bays marked by orange witches’ hats to undergo testing. A man in his late 40s is pacing around and swearing, with his hands on the back of his head. He has been asked to get out of his car while his details are checked and he isn’t happy. He tells police without prompting that he has just been released from prison for driving offences. He seems to be expecting sympathy. Caught behind the wheel of a car while under suspension, his car will be seized for 28 days. His 1970s-model Mercedes Benz is about to be towed away while he is arrested to appear in court at a later date. He is angry and tells police they are targeting him unfairly. He starts screaming expletives and saying he only just bought his car and he

won’t be able to pay the cost of impounding. “You’re going to get me divorced,” he yells at one of the officers. This is front-line policing on Perth’s streets, a typical night on duty for police officers attached to the Breath and Drug Operations unit or BaD. This BaD team will spend the next five to six hours standing on the roadside while they test close to 1000 drivers. Teams like these work on a rotating roster. Day or night, rain, hail or shine, you will find them on the road attempting to keep our streets safe from dangerous drivers.

Anytime, anywhere The officer in charge of BaD Operations, Senior Sergeant Brendon Newton, borrowing from a recent road-safety advertising campaign, says drivers can expect to be stopped “any time, anywhere” and required to undergo an RBT. His colleague, Senior Constable Rod Endall, describes how recently the team had stopped a man in his 60s at an RBT who was so drunk he had urinated in his pants and on his car seat. It was

There is clear evidence that RBT has led to a reduction in crashes in all states. just after 10am in one of Perth’s south-eastern suburbs and the man had been drinking all night. Snr Sgt Newton shakes his head in disbelief that anyone could drive in such a condition, especially given the publicity about the dangers of drinking and driving. Data from the WA Office of The impact Road Safety (ors.wa.gov.au) shows of RBT in WA that consuming alcohol prior to driving increases your crash risk. When compared to drivers with a blood alcohol concentration of reduction in zero, drivers are twice as likely to fatal crashes crash with a blood-alcohol content (BAC) of 0.05; seven times more likely to crash with a BAC of 0.08; and 25 times more likely to crash reduction in with a BAC of 0.15. There is a body single-vehicle night-time of evidence that shows even the crashes first drink of alcohol begins the deterioration of important driving skills. Young, inexperienced drivers are at an even greater risk. overall reduction The impact of the introduction in all serious of RBT has been heavily researched crashes in all Australian states. There is

clear evidence that RBT has led to a reduction in crashes in all states. In Western Australia, the initial impact of RBT has been a 28 per cent reduction in fatal crashes, a 26 per cent reduction in singlevehicle-night-time crashes and overall a 13 per cent reduction in all crashes of a serious nature. RAC External Engagement Manager Liz Carey says while more than 883,000 RBT tests were carried out in WA in the 2011/12 financial year the State could be doing better. She says there were 1.8 million licensed drivers in WA and the test rate represents less than half a test per driver per year. Ms Carey says the RAC is pushing for a doubling of the test rate so that on average there is one test per driver per year.

Volume and visibility A recent survey of RAC members found 33 per cent believed they were unlikely to be stopped by an RBT when driving home from a night out at dinner or the pub. “Compared to other states we have a relatively low rate (of RBT). Queensland has a rate of one test per driver per year,” Ms Carey says. “The situation (in WA) has improved in the past 12 months and December / January 2014 Horizons 33

we applaud that, but we are still not at that best practice point. You really need not just the volume of testing, but the visibility of the testing process to be higher. A high visibility random breath testing operation sends a message to anyone who might be having a drink or two and then thinking of driving not to push it too hard because there is a fair chance they will be pulled over.” “The community strongly supports random breath testing and would like to see more of it done,” Ms Carey says. Last year 15 per cent of road fatalities were put down to alcohol with another 8 per cent attributed to a combination of alcohol and speed and an additional 1 per cent to a combination of alcohol and drugs. In 2010 one in every five drivers killed on our roads had a BAC above the legal limit of 0.05 and more than one in ten had a BAC three times the legal limit or more than 0.15.

Urban drink driving myths Sucking mints and drinking coffee or water are some of the many techniques people believe can fool an RBT, but Snr Constable Endall says nothing works to flout the test. “If they have had a mint then we tell them to take it out of their mouth and that they will have to wait 20 minutes to have a test,” Snr Const Endall says. “When they are sitting in the bus after blowing over the limit they will often ask for water thinking it will alter the test results but it won’t.” He says the biggest myth about drinking is that people believe they are safe to drive after a couple of hours of not drinking. But he says a drinker’s BAC may continue to go up for two hours after they finish their last drink. Snr Const Endall says the best way to avoid a reading at an RBT is simply not to drink or not to drive if you are drinking.

Meet the ‘turners’ While the Burswood bus team is busy pulling over drivers, across the city another two units are working from booze buses in Mandurah and Thornlie. As the night progresses so does the frequency and intensity of the offences the police officers will come across. Minutes after the suspended driver is dealt with in Burswood the officers spot what they term a “turner”. A four-wheel drive is reversing up Victoria Park Drive away from the booze bus. It takes seconds before police in a vehicle nearby have their sirens wailing and are in pursuit. The driver, a 61-year-old man, stops and is then led back to the booze bus for testing. Head bowed he boards the bus for a random breath test and an interview. His test reveals he is under the limit and he is released with a caution. Apologising, and clearly embarrassed, he drives away. Turners are a common sight for

booze bus crews but Snr Constable Endall says they seldom get away. Police cars, sometimes unmarked, are usually secreted in nearby streets waiting to catch those who think they can slip away to avoid an RBT. Later, while most of the officers enjoy a short meal break or “crib”, a car does a rapid U-turn in sight of the bus and the chase car is deployed. The driver’s erratic and suspicious behaviour leads to more serious charges, including drinkdriving, after he is apprehended nearby while trying to lose police in the busy Burswood parking area. In the past 12 to 18 months the role of booze buses has been expanded to include a greater emphasis on intelligence gathering and the apprehension of offenders. Snr Sgt Newton explains that most criminals use vehicles so it makes sense to deploy RBTs to areas of high crime and make use of the

No one has any excuse to drink and drive these days and everyone should know their limit.

resource to combat not only drink driving but also other offences from stealing to drug dealing. “If we are throwing out a net we are fairly likely to catch other offenders as well,” he says. “We always did that (caught criminals at RBTs) but now the locations of the buses are very intelligence based. They are based on drink and driving data and intelligence indicating crime trends. For instance if there has been a spate of burglaries in the Kensington area then we will deploy there. We are always looking for crooks.” Part of Snr Const Endall’s job is to crunch the numbers, analyse the intelligence and work out the best place to put the booze buses each day. Sr Sgt Newton said technology was driving the change in the additional use of RBTs as mobile crime detection units.

BaD news BaD has at its disposal a fleet of smart cars, vehicles equipped with rooftop cameras and high-tech computer systems, that scan the traffic checking number plates. The smart cars, or advanced traffic management vehicles, alert police to cars whose owners have been flagged for a range of criminal activities or who might be driving under suspension or have a drug history. By the close of tonight’s shift at Burswood more than 930 drivers will have had their alcohol levels tested, three will have been charged with a BAC in excess of 0.08 and another three in excess of 0.05. Three drivers will be picked up for driving while under suspension and seven will be issued with traffic infringement notices. A further 37 will be cautioned for minor traffic offences, three people and one vehicle will be searched and two cars will be seized after their owners are found driving under suspension. The 14 random drug tests the officers will conduct will all come back negative.

Motoring

The officers will also be involved in a number of pursuits including a high-speed chase that will take them as far as Karrinyup. Two police cars are involved in the chase that begins when the vehicle refuses to stop for the RBT and ends when the car is abandoned and its three occupants flee on foot. The driver is caught and charged with a number of offences including reckless driving, evading police, providing false particulars to police and driving under suspension.

No excuse The officers attached to the BaD unit have heard every excuse in the book but say that these days most people just accept they have been caught and take the consequences. “We do get told a lot that its our fault,” says one young officer. “Try working that one out? At the end of the day if you drink and drive chances are you will get caught.” BaD officers can now issue on the spot driving suspensions for anyone caught with a BAC of 0.08 or higher. This means that when someone is charged they can have their licence suspended immediately for up to two months. If they drive during that time their car will be seized. Snr Sgt Newton says this change, introduced last year, surprised some drivers although most accepted the penalty without complaint. Once someone blows over the limit in the initial roadside test they are required to sit in the booze bus for 20 minutes. After the 20 minutes has elapsed the driver is required to do an evidentiary test. If they fail this they are charged and processed on site. If no one can drive the vehicle home it is left overnight in an area near the booze bus. “You see a cross section of people sitting in the booze bus, they come from every walk of life,” Snr Sgt Newton says. He says mums and dads coming home after a few drinks at a social event are often picked up by the RBT and say they had no idea they had drunk enough

to push them over the limit. But Snr Sgt Newton says no one has any excuse to drink and drive these days and everyone should know their limit. Ms Carey says it is a simple matter of, if in doubt don’t drink and drive. “At the RAC we try to convey the message that if you are going to be drinking at all then seriously think about leaving your car at home. A lot of people make the mistake of thinking they will only have one drink but then they have a second or their wine glass gets topped up and they lose track of how much they have consumed. It is impossible for motorists to determine their blood alcohol level accurately so our message is don’t take the chance, leave your car at home, get someone who isn’t drinking to drive or be prepared to leave your car at the hotel or at the restaurant.” Snr Sgt Newton says with Christmas a traditional time for drinking, police will be out in force manning booze buses across the metropolitan area. l

What’s a standard drink? In order to stay under 0.05 the best advice is not to drink at all. If you will be drinking, follow these guidelines to do so safely. Men should not drink more than two standard drinks in the first hour and one standard drink every following hour. Women should not drink more than one standard drink every hour. f you’re a typical Australian the Australian Bureau of Statistics tells us you can expect to see your 81st birthday, which means a potential 63 years of happy motoring. During that time, you’ll buy a car once every seven years - eight in total - including two new and six used. Each of those eight car purchases will set you back around $24,000, of which 15 per cent will disappear annually as the car’s resale value falls. You’ll cover about 14,000km a year for a total of 882,000km, equal to 22 times around the world. You’ll spend another $6,000 a year on interest, registration, insurance, repairs, maintenance and fuel. So when you’re sitting back in your rocking chair at 81, your first great-grandchild bouncing on

your knee, you’ll have spent over $570,000 on cars. But the real cost of driving is about more than just the price of petrol and buying and maintaining a car, it also has a human element. Tragically, around 1300 people die on Australian roads each year. Another 26,500 will be injured, spending on average 4.4 days in hospital. The federal government estimated the cost of road trauma in 2012 at $24 billion, equal to $1,040 for every Australian. Buying the safest possible car can help reduce the very real risk of road trauma, but how do you know which car is safer than the others? More than one million new cars are bought in Australia each year and purchasers have a new car-safety rating system called the

Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) to guide their decisions. But what about the threetimes-as-many Australians buying used cars? That’s where Used Car Safety Ratings (UCSR) come in. The UCSR, compiled by Monash University’s Accident Research Centre (MUARC) using data from 5.5-million real world crashes, can help. With an impressive level of detail, the UCSR covers more than 216 vehicles manufactured between 1996 and 2011, so most of the popular models on our roads are there. Each model is given a star rating out of five, which consumers can use as a reliable guide to a vehicle’s safety performance. “The UCSRs are based on the analysis of real world crash December / January 2014 Horizons 37

outcomes using advanced statistical techniques to separate the contribution of vehicle design and specification from other factors that contribute to injury outcome such as occupant demographics and crash circumstances,” explains MUARC team leader Dr Stuart Newstead. Dr Newstead says the ratings have evolved significantly since the program’s first published results in 1992. The ratings methodology has been refined to produce more accurate ratings, and the number of vehicles rated has grown to cover more of the used-car market. But the biggest advance is the introduction of a predictive element. “Initially the ratings only focused on how well each vehicle protected its own occupants from death or serious injury in a crash, known as crashworthiness,” Dr Newstead explains. “They were then expanded to consider how likely the vehicle is to kill or seriously injure other road users with which they might collide including other vehicle drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists, called the aggressivity rating.” One interesting tidbit to emerge from the analysis is the influence of colour on a vehicle’s safety rating. It turns out that bright, garish colours might actually be safer. “MUARC research has shown

With an impressive level of detail, the UCSR covers more than 216 vehicles manufactured between 1996 and 2011, so most of the popular models on our roads are there. vehicle colour to have a significant influence on crash risk with low contrast colours such as silver, grey, black and dark blue having up to 10 per cent higher crash risk,” says Dr Newstead, “but only during daylight hours. At night where vehicle lighting is used there is no difference. Choosing a bright colour may help other road users see you, but it won’t help in the most common crash type,” says Dr Newstead. “Single vehicle crashes in Australia are very prevalent, representing about 45 per cent of all crashes involving light passenger vehicles.” Excessive speed, drink driving and inattention, including fatigue and mobile phone texting are all common factors of single vehicle crashes. And yet all these factors can be addressed with common sense. Remember, no matter how

safe a car is, safe driving still starts with you, the driver. And your decision to be a safe driver starts with the car you choose. Dr Newstead says that consumers shouldn’t necessarily focus on certain safety features like airbags and crumple zones, though knowing what you need is a start. Instead, the UCSR has been devised as an all-encompassing guide that takes care of the detail. “A car’s safety performance is about total design and specification and not just a few features fitted. The best advice is to use the ratings to identify the safest car for the purpose required.”

Younger drivers at risk Young drivers, says Dr Newstead, are putting themselves in danger not just by taking risks while driving, but also by choosing the wrong cars. “This has been an area of struggle to achieve improvement and there is still much work to do,” Dr Newstead explains. “Novice-driver vehicle safety has improved over time but still lags the safety of vehicles driven by older drivers by a long way. (This is) due to the vehicles being older and, for females, smaller, with continued generally poor-safety choices. Safety needs to be the number one priority for a novice-driver vehicle because they are so much more likely to have a crash and (have to) draw upon the vehicle

safety features to prevent injury.” One rule of thumb is to choose as new a car as possible, but there are exceptions, says RAC Vehicle and Fuels Manager Alex Forrest. “Newer is almost always better. The established, mainstream carmakers are continually making their cars safer. However, the exceptions here are some of the more recent entrants to the Australian market, such as some vehicles from Chinese and Indian manufacturers. The good news is they’re slowly improving, but generally speaking, they’re not there yet.” What about size? Does size matter? “While the laws of physics can’t be denied, a huge vehicle is by no means a guarantee of optimum safety. A large, older four-wheel drive, for example, can be more susceptible to rolling over and have poorer passenger and pedestrian protection characteristics than a smaller, more modern car.” The best advice, however, is also the easiest to follow. “Used-car buyers should purchase the safest car they can afford,” says Mr Forrest. “The vehicle should of course be practical and suited to their needs, but safety also varies widely in the used car market and two cars which look the same could vary widely in their safety credentials. The Used Car Safety Ratings is there to help consumers make the right choice.” l

UCSR or ANCAP?

Who really owns your car? You’ve found your next car, and you’ve driven a great bargain. You hand over the money, sign some papers and drive off into the sunset. Two days later a tow driver repossesses your sleek new freedom machine and you’ve done your dough. This could happen to you. Before you part with a single dollar, do a check on the vehicle through the Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR) to make sure the person selling the car actually owns it, and that the car is not secured against their loan. If it is, their bank has the legal right to repossess the car even after they’ve ‘sold’ it to you. So don’t put yourself at financial risk, do a PPSR check online at ppsr.gov.au. It’s free and it could save you a lot of money.

Safety features are fertile ground for acronyms. ABS, EBA, ESC are just three of many that relate to vehicle safety features. Two of the most important - ANCAP and UCSR - are specifically intended to help you buy a safer car. ANCAP analyses the safety credentials of new cars by taking into account how well a vehicle’s structure and safety equipment could protect occupants in crashes and help them avoid crashes in the first place. Because it is focused solely on new cars, ANCAP does not use real-world crash data. Instead, ANCAP puts vehicles through a series of laboratory crashes to assess safety and allocate a star rating out of five. It also recognises safety equipment such as electronic stability control and seat-belt reminders. UCSR, on the other hand, analyses data from more than 5.5 million real-world vehicle crashes attended by police to score vehicle occupant protection. Does that make UCSR better than ANCAP? No. The UCSR requires at least 100 real-world crashes for a vehicle before it can be scored. So, next time you’re shopping for a car, take both ratings into account, but if the model you’re looking at is less than three years old, you may need to rely solely on ANCAP for your guide to safety.

Mind over motor Inattention is the cause of a significant number of road traumas but an innovative new project is aiming to help drivers keep their mind on the road. Toby Hagon investigates.

R

oughly one in five road fatalities in Western Australia are caused by inattention or fatigue, according to statistics compiled with data from WA Police. RAC road safety experts say those figures are likely significantly higher due to the difficulty in determining when fatigue or inattention plays a part in a crash. Often it’s impossible to accurately determine, for example, whether the lack of skid marks leading to a fatal crash was because the driver misjudged a corner or was playing with their phone. Behind speeders and drink-drivers, those not paying attention or concentrating fully on driving account for a large proportion of road trauma. The RAC’s Executive General Manager, Pat Walker, says that while it’s the one issue that can affect almost any motorist, it’s also something we don’t know enough about. “Whether it’s distractions inside or

outside the car or simply being on auto pilot, inattention is one of the biggest killers on WA roads. But we still don’t know enough about what happens in that moment when a driver’s mind is elsewhere.” This year the RAC embarked on a landmark project to learn more about what happens when a driver’s attention is switched off. To gain valuable insight into inattention and its impact on driving performance required literally getting inside the mind of the driver. The RAC approached Dr Geoffrey Mackellar, Chief Technical Officer at Sydney-based research company Emotiv to use their EEG headset to monitor drivers in a series of tests. Emotiv’s Australian-designed EPOC headset uses 14 sensors to monitor brain waves. The initial thinking was that by monitoring a driver’s brain activity there could be opportunities to reduce injuries

or fatalities by avoiding impact altogether. The result of the collaboration between Emotiv and the RAC was the world-first Attention Powered Car project. As the name suggests, the Attention Powered Car is a vehicle that responds depending on whether the driver is paying attention, with pre-determined restrictions implemented for those deemed as not being alert and with their mind on the serious task of driving. The Attention Powered Car was put to the test in October and November this year when it completed a monitored journey through a number of locations in regional WA and on a controlled track at the RAC Driving Centre. Even though the brain-monitoring technology had already been developed, Dr Mackellar focused on developing the unit further so that it was able to determine what inattention was and to recognise when a driver was not paying attention. Motoring

“We can’t read thoughts, but we can figure out to a fair approximation what’s going on in the brain, in general terms,” says Dr Mackellar. “We can generally detect if someone is alert, if they’re hearing things, whether they’re speaking ... just from activity in different parts of the brain.” But to accurately determine what drivers are actually doing, the project needed to monitor eye movements including the size of pupils and rates of blinking, all of which can give an indication of fatigue and alertness. “With this project we teamed up with a company that produces eye tracking equipment, so we could look at what people are watching as well as thinking.” Dr Mackellar says one of the biggest challenges was distinguishing between the different things people are concentrating on. “Paying attention can easily be paying attention to a mobile phone,” explains Dr Mackellar. “So we determined that the most successful strategy was to look at attention switching, scanning between [concentrating on] the road and texting. We wanted to look for specific attention related to driving ... and we can detect that with quite good accuracy.”

“Whether it’s distractions inside or outside the car or simply being on auto pilot, inattention is one of the biggest killers on WA roads.”

Focus on distractions While many modern cars have fatigue detection systems, that’s all they detect. They cannot determine whether someone has switched their focus from the intersection ahead to the kids in the back seats, something that makes this project unique. Almost 20 subjects underwent intensive driving simulations on a computer to determine what their brain and eyes were doing under certain situations – such as regular driving, changing music or making a phone call. “Then we restricted them to 15km/h for 15 minutes, got them bored out of their brains,” says Dr Mackellar, all with the aim of simulating fatigue or inattentive situations. “We then developed some machine-learning systems to interpret all the data. We had massive statistical modelling packages to get information on

what sort of driving constitutes normal driving and distracted driving.” As well as simulations the aim of the Attention Powered Car project was to move into real-world testing. The project team selected a Hyundai i40 to take part in the high-tech trial. Already a five-star ANCAP safety-rated vehicle, it’s otherwise a standard, four-cylinder family wagon complete with the latest mod cons. Integrating the headset and associated tracking equipment into the car is where Sydney-based production and technology company Finch came in. Director of Applied Technology Emad Tahtouh says there was plenty of debate early in the project about what the car should do once it was determined the driver wasn’t paying attention. “Really we wanted to highlight how easy it was to lose attention ... so we settled on cutting the accelerator,” explains Tahtouh.

“The accelerator is impacted in a way that does not involve the modification of any of the vehicle’s existing operations or systems. We wanted to ensure the Attention Powered Car was safe for use on public roads.” Detecting inattention only triggers an acceleration cut-off – an existing mechanism in the vehicle. The driver is always in control of the vehicle and can disable the unit at any time with the push of a button mounted on the steering wheel. At no time does the system have any impact on increased acceleration or braking. Finch went about developing a program that sits between the EEG headset and the car. “Then once we hit certain trigger points it sends an accelerator idle command to the computer, which impacts on the accelerator,” says Tahtouh.

Monitoring driver attention Tapping into the car’s computer uses a system based on commonly used speed-limiting devices. “Instead of monitoring for the speed limit we’re monitoring for attention,” says Tahtouh. Early testing on a track quickly – and accurately – determined when a driver wandered from the task of driving by reading a map or using their phone. “The effect was instantaneous,” says Tahtouh. While the RAC has no plans to commercialise the unit, the Attention Powered Car will be used to test different causes of inattention and the findings used to guide the development of appropriate interventions for the better of all drivers. The RAC’s Pat Walker says raising more awareness of inattention as a serious issue has also been an important part of the project. “We hope that through this initiative West Australian drivers will acknowledge the fact that we often don’t pay attention behind the wheel in the way we should.” Already the Hyundai has undergone many real-world kilometres, with strict control conditions. The results of that journey are now being examined. It’s a preview of an exciting future, where new technology may help us all become more mindful drivers. l

Jeep Grand Cherokee

U

ntil the fully redesigned Grand Cherokee was intro‑ duced in Australia nearly three years ago, Jeep was best known in this country for making capable but crude off‑roaders that were yet to break into the mainstream SUV market. The Grand Cherokee introduced in February 2011 did much to change that. Jeep had taken a quantum leap forward in the design and quality of its interior, and the exterior now looked like it belonged in the twenty‑first century. Consumers responded, and by the time the last generation Grand Cherokee was discontinued in June 2013, that

model made up a whopping 45 per cent of Chrysler’s sales in Australia. Now, the next new Grand Cherokee has arrived. The qual‑ ity is still there and so is the value, particularly at the low end of the range, where there’s a new two‑wheel drive model. The new entry level Grand Cherokee Laredo, starts at a sharp $45,000 driveaway for the 210kW/347Nm petrol V6. Moving up from the Laredo, the mid‑spec Grand Cherokee is the Limited, followed by the Overland. The range‑topper is the performance‑focused SRT. As well as the two‑wheel drive model, the big news is the introduction of Jeep’s eight‑speed automatic

transmission to the Grand Cherokee range. Compared with the gearbox it replaces, there’s an extra three ratios, meaning the engine is operating in its optimum rev range more often, improving efficiency and performance. As well as the aforementioned petrol V6, other engine choices comprise a 3.0‑litre diesel V6 (with 184kW and a muscular 570Nm), a 5.7‑litre V8 (259kW and 520Nm) and the huge

6.4‑litre petrol V8 in the SRT model, which makes 344kW and 624Nm. The off‑road ability of the four‑wheel drive models is excellent and there is a range of selectable driving modes for various terrains, including sand, snow, mud and rock. Conversely, the new two‑ wheel drive Grand Cherokee may not be able to access all areas, but it will give Jeep access to a new area of the market. l

O

n city streets, the gigantic new Nissan Patrol V8 looks both impos‑ ing and faintly ridiculous. Take it off‑road though, and it transforms from constrained behemoth to hugely capable and powerful king of the rough stuff. It’s available in three model grades, and we tested the mid‑spec Ti model, which costs $103,286 driveaway. When it was introduced to the Australian market in February 2013, this new Y62‑ generation Patrol brought with it a new 5.6‑litre petrol V8 that sends its 298kW and 560Nm through a seven‑speed auto. That’s a lot of engine, but

it’s needed given the Patrol weighs 2706kg. However, when this new Patrol did arrive, the elephant in the room was the lack of a diesel engine option. In Australia, diesel is virtually the default engine type in large four‑wheel drives. However, pet‑ rol is the preferred fuel in larger markets such as the US and at this stage, it’s the only sort of engine we’re getting in the new Patrol for the time being. If you want a new diesel Patrol, you’ll have to get the old (14 years and counting) Y61 model, which has remained on sale as the only diesel option. In a first for the Patrol, the new one comes with independ‑ ent suspension all‑round, as well as a new, variable‑mode

four‑wheel drive system, which allows the driver to select the drive mode that best suits the terrain. Given the increasing number of large four‑wheel drives that have selectable terrain modes, their presence in the Patrol brings it right up to date with its competitors. High and low‑range gearing is also available, as it should be on a vehicle like this. Both the wet and soft sand on the

beach near Busselton were no match for the Patrol’s new all‑independent suspension and dedicated Sand‑driving mode. However, the most notable improvement with the Y62 Patrol is its premium interior‑build quality and refinement. The V8 is amply powerful, creamy smooth and more efficient than its Y61 predecessor’s smaller petrol engine. All it needs now is the option of a diesel. l

n one of the most significant safety advances in the small‑car segment, Volkswagen’s new Golf VII comes standard with a driver‑fatigue detection system. It means every new Golf VII comes with the ability to analyse the driver’s steering input at the start of the journey, and if that input becomes bigger and more sudden during the trip, visual and

audible warnings are given. Autonomous braking (city emergency braking in VW‑ speak) is also an option, as is park assist, which will automatically steer the car into a parallel or perpendicular parking spot. All this takes some focus away from the fact that Volkswagen had a tough 2013 with regards to the safety and reliability issues of its older models.

Volkswagen Golf VII

Time will ultimately tell whether the Golf VII will be free of problems in these areas and chances are it will be, given the very public reliability issues surrounding its predecessors. Most importantly though, will be changes to the way VW responds to customer queries and complaints, which was really at the heart of the whole VW reliability furore. The twin‑charged (super‑ charged and turbo‑charged) petrol 1.4‑litre engine has been dropped, and the 1.4 in the new Golf is turbo‑charged only. It’s available in 90kW (the 90TSI) and 103kW (103TSI) versions. There’s also the 110TDI we tested, which came with VW’s

ubiquitous 2.0‑litre turbo diesel, complemented by the seven‑speed direct shift gear‑ box (DSG). Externally, this seventh generation Golf has retained the basic styling cues which identify it as a Golf. At the same time, VW says the Golf VII has been completely redesigned – quite a feat given how familiar it looks. Also familiar is its handling, which is an absolute standout. Turn‑in is razor sharp and it’s backed by highly communicative steering and gecko‑like grip, mid‑corner. The interior quality in the Golf VII is stunning, with a build and finish you’d expect in cars costing far more than the Golf’s starting driveaway price of $22,990. VW says its reliability woes are in the past and if that’s the case, its competition should be very nervous. l

The test vehicle had the turbo petrol engine, which got the 5008 along just fine, although it was only carrying two young children and one adult. While we didn’t test the diesel, its extra 100Nm of torque would no doubt be better at handling the bigger loads. There’s just the one model grade available with the 5008, and the only option is a leather interior at an extra $3,000. eople movers have typically suffered from an image problem because of their sole dedication to the task of efficiently getting people around. This is in contrast to mid‑sized SUVs, which do the same job but generally cost more to run because their owners also want to sit higher and pretend that they might one day go off‑road. It’s for this reason that the Peugeot 5008 does its core task very well: it simply doesn’t have to worry about multi‑ tasking. Being a Peugeot though, the 5008 is also clever and slightly

wacky, and few categories need these points of difference more than people movers. For a start, the Peugeot 5008 has a giant glass roof that makes you feel like you’re in a convertible, but without the wind. It also has two LCD screens with Bluetooth wireless headsets for the second row of seats, a flip‑up sat‑nav screen, a light in the boot that doubles as a removable torch, tray tables behind the front seats and window blinds on all rear side windows. Storage compartments are everywhere, including one under the steering column. Surprise and delight features

aside, the Peugeot 5008 is strong on substance too. Importantly, it has curtain airbags that extend all the way to the third row of seats – which sadly can’t be said of all people movers. What’s new

The latest news from the motoring world

Limit your kids’ top speed Record-breaking three million mile car

I

t’s fair to say that few people like driving as much as Irv Gordon. The affable American has now driven his little 1966 Volvo P1800S more than three million miles (4.8 million kilometres) and he holds the Guinness World Record for the longest distance ever driven by one person in a non-commercial vehicle. That distance is the equivalent of driving around

the earth 126 times or six return trips to the moon. “I bought my Volvo on a Friday, and immediately fell in love,” Mr Gordon recalled. “I couldn’t stop driving and I brought the car back to the dealership the following Monday for its 1,500-mile service.” Since then, Mr Gordon’s fanatical attention to car safety and maintenance has ensured he was able to go the distance.

New ignition key technology has been introduced by Ford, enabling owners and parents to place certain restrictions on young drivers such as limiting the top speed and overriding the ability to deactivate safety technologies such as ESC. The technology, called MyKey, is available on the new Fiesta, and allows parents to program an ignition key, to be recognised by the car as being different from the main key. The car’s settings are then adjusted according to the settings that have been linked with the secondary key. MyKey can also limit the volume of the audio system, and/or disable it completely until the seatbelts are fastened.

Honda CR-V diesel

Mini Paceman

Fiat Punto

It’s been a while coming, but the first diesel-powered CR-V is nearly with us. Honda launched the current CR-V in late 2012, which also brought with it a first for the CR-V in the form of a two-wheel drive option. The brand is expected to launch the CR-V diesel in early 2014. Expect the diesel – most likely a 2.2-litre unit with 350Nm – to carry a price premium over its petrol equivalents in the CR-V range, although the diesel’s pricing is likely to be very competitive with its arch enemy in the marketplace, the Mazda CX-5.

Yes, the Paceman is yet another iteration of the Mini – the seventh, in fact – which the BMW-owned brand introduced in March 2013. It’s based on the higher-riding fourdoor Mini Countryman, which is somewhat ambitiously referred to as an SUV. The twodoor Paceman’s key distinguishing feature is its sharply tapered roofline, although Mini suggets this isn’t a two-door baby SUV it’s a “Sports Activity Coupe”. It handles well, but we recommend choosing a Countryman if you want an off-roading Mini. If you’re after even better looks and handling, go for the Mini Cooper or a Toyota 86.

Hot on the heels of the re-launch of the Fiat 500 in June, the Fiat Punto made a re-appearance in Australia in early August. The Punto had previously been sold here between 2006 and 2010, and is back with a starting driveaway price of $16,000. With 57kW and 115Nm, it’s more about efficiency than performance. The four-cylinder engine is linked to a five-speed manual and uses 5.7L/100km – slightly more than competitors such as the Hyundai i20 and Mitsubishi Mirage. Neither of those cars are Italian though, and this cachet alone could well count for a lot.

Our experts answer your questions

service times. I have been informed by automotive part retailers that it is all right to mix coolants. Would the good ‘Doctor’ kindly comment? Alvin, Applecross

A:

You should stick to the recommendations outlined in your vehicle owner’s handbook. This is particularly true with regards to modern vehicles, whose cooling systems require specific types and concentrations of engine coolants. Mixing coolants can alter both of these. When your car is serviced, the technician will inspect your cooling system including the coolant and if necessary they can test to see if it is still within required specifications. If the coolant does not pass the test they will recommend a flush and replacement of the coolant.

Illegal child restraint

Q

This morning I was on my way to pick up my Hyundai Getz as it was being recalled for a safety switch when I came across a red Getz, which had a child safety seat installed in the boot section. I couldn’t believe this, so I walked back to get a better look, and found the parcel shelf had been removed and the child seat installed onto the backseats facing outwards. Is this legal? I’m asking because I can only fit one child seat and one booster seat on my back seat. M Ballard

A: It is illegal to transport any

person – including a child in a child car restraint - in the boot

of any vehicle. This is a highly dangerous practice and even more serious where children are involved who rely on the decisions of their parents and guardians to make safety decisions for them. A child restraint should only be installed in an actual seating position, and one where the restraint can be installed using the appropriate attachment points on the vehicle. For more information please contact KidSafeWA on 9340 8509.

Coolant cocktail

Q

According to my vehicle owner’s handbook, coolant types should not be mixed and the system should be flushed at the stipulated

Q

My car is just over two years old and only requires annual (or 20,000km) servicing intervals. Because I average less than 5000kms per year do I still need to stick to the annual servicing or could this be extended?

You can be a winner If your question is published you will receive a copy of the new UBD Gregory’s 2014 Perth and Surrounds Street Directory from RAC Travel, which includes new streets and suburbs, petrol station locations and more. See page 80 for terms and conditions of entry.

Send your questions to: The Car Doctor RAC Horizons GPO Box C140 Perth WA 6839 or email: editor@rac.com.au Please include your full name, address and daytime telephone number with your query. If your question is chosen for publication, please allow up to eight weeks for the delivery of your prize.

Garry, Swanbourne

A:

Despite your vehicle covering a considerably lower number of kilometres than average, it’s recommended that you nonetheless have your vehicle serviced annually. This is because some items on your vehicle’s service schedule require attention based on time rather than the distance the car has been driven, such as changing the oil, coolant and brake fluid as well as checks of tyres, brakes, lights and drivebelts.

Home safety at Christmas Stocking up on the latest electronic goods, computers, jewellery and other high-value gifts in the lead-up to Christmas can make our homes even more of a burglary target. Keep these simple security tips in mind to reduce the temptation for opportunistic theft. l Avoid displaying your Christmas tree and gifts in a window so they’re visible from the street. l After Christmas Day don’t advertise your new gifts to thieves by piling up empty gift boxes in a visible place. Break the boxes down and place them in your recycling bin. l If you’re using outdoor Christmas lights, don’t feed extension cords through partially open windows. Use solar options or outdoor power points.

Green machine team Formula SAE is an international student design program where teams of engineering students finance, design, build and race small, open-wheeled vehicles.

You should also ensure that valuable gifts are fully covered by your contents insurance policy. Take photos of your new valuables and create a catalogue in case you need to make a claim. Consider using identification engraving on new property. This makes it easier for police to return your goods if they’re found after a break-in. You can borrow an engraver from your local police station or Neighbourhood Watch area co-ordinator. If your home alarm is monitored, notify your monitoring company when you’re going away and check that your contact details are up to date.

Team member Andre Van Vulpen said they were excited to be part of a challenging project focused on building a greener car. Supported through the RAC’s Community Sponsorships program, the Formula SAE project aligns with the RAC’s commitment to promoting greener motoring and reducing vehicle CO² emissions. Since the Community Sponsorships program started in 2011, more than $415,000 in sponsorship has been provided to support a variety of community initiatives across WA.

If you’d like to review your home security, call RAC Security on 1300 132 735 or visit rac.com.au/security

Cover your home improvements If you carried out any home improvements in the leadup to the holiday season it’s important to consider the extra value you may have added to your home and how it may affect your home insurance policy. Making home additions or improvements without adjusting your sum insured could mean your insurance cover falls behind the true cost of replacing your home. You may also accumulate more valuable home contents over Christmas so this is a great time of year to assess whether your belongings are properly covered. Underinsurance may not seem like an issue if you only need to replace a stolen television, but it could be a

big problem if you need to rebuild your home from the ground up and replace all its contents after a disaster, such as a fire. Without enough cover, you may end up with a shortfall at a time when you can least afford it. Our online home insurance calculators can help you estimate the value of your building and contents to determine if you have the appropriate cover. For more information visit rac.com.au/ underinsurance or call 13 17 03.

Free course for young drivers As a road safety advocate, the RAC is committed to ensuring our members and everyone in the WA community is able to move safely around our state. A critical part of this work is educating our most vulnerable road users. In 2012, the proportion of road fatalities for young people aged 17-24 years was almost double their proportion of the population. These high fatality rates are often the result of inexperience, risk-taking behaviour and overconfidence. As part of our commitment to safeguarding young drivers, RAC is offering free Driver Enhancement Courses to those under 25 with an RAC Comprehensive Car Insurance policy. Young drivers can learn about correct braking techniques, wet-weather driving, wheel-changing, reversing and much more, and get to practise in a safe and fun environment on our purpose-built track. Successful completion of the half-day course entitles the policy holder to a 20 per cent discount on their next Comprehensive Car Insurance renewal, followed by 10 per cent off the second renewal and 5 per cent off the third. Driver Enhancement Courses can also be purchased as a gift for $195. Plus, RAC members receive 10 per cent off the price of the course. For full details of the offer visit rac.com.au/youngdriver or call 1800 502 328.

As modern vehicles and their on-board computer systems have increased in complexity, restarting your car when the battery goes flat isn’t as simple as it once was. A jump start is not always the most hassle-free way to get back on the road. When done incorrectly restarting a car with a flat battery can result in the loss of codes, memory settings and even damage to expensive computer units. The experts from RAC Batteries use specialist equipment to minimise the risk to your car and get you back on the road quickly and safely.

"They looked like ordinary sunglasses, but I got the surprise of my life when I put them on ..." by Anthony Brennan

I ALWAYS thought I had pretty good vision. But when I put on a pair of BLOK® sunglasses it was like seeing with fresh new eyes. I found I could see right through glare with a striking clarity. Everything appeared sharper, crisper and more defined - like a kind of enhanced 3-D effect. And colours were much brighter, vibrant and more ‘alive’. I kept taking them off and putting them on again to make sure that what I was seeing was actually sharper, and not just my imagination playing tricks on me. But my vision did improve. It was obvious. I then put on my $160 sunglasses to compare. They were dull, blurry and glarey - no comparison. I was impressed. But why did these BLOK® sunglasses make such a big difference? I found out ....

Firstly:

And most importantly, it’s how the sun’s blue rays affect the retina in your eyes. Your retina is like the film in old cameras, it captures images. And because blue rays are so short in the visible spectrum, they land just in front of your retina, not on it, as do other colours. This causes what scientists refer to as Chromatic Aberration or "Blue Blur" - a chaotic scattering of blue rays that obstruct and dilute other colours as they enter your eye. They believe this results in reduced visual sharpness, eyestrain and fatigue. BLOK® lenses filter these blue rays, allowing all colours to focus clearly on your retina. So colours are enhanced and objects appear much sharper and clearer*, even in low light conditions. And because they are no longer battling blue rays, you’ll immediately notice a soothing, relaxation effect on your eyes - no matter how extreme the sunlight.

For polarised sunglasses of this quality, without our unique lens, you could easily pay $200 upwards. But because we don’t sell to shops (no ‘middlemen’), we can supply them directly to you for just $79 plus $8 post & handling. Each pair comes with a Microfibre carry case and has a ONE year warranty.

Compare for yourself

I’m very proud to be involved with BLOK ® sunglasses, so I urge you to order a pair today and give them a try. When you receive them, compare them to your old sunglasses. Notice how vivid colours are and how much sharper objects appear with BLOK® - even through water. Notice the absence of glare and how quickly you stop squinting. Notice how nicely relaxed and refreshed your eyes feel. And if you don’t instantly see a dramatic difference - exactly as I’ve described here - then return them to us within 60 days and I’ll ensure you get a prompt and courteous refund. That’s my promise to you. You have no risk. We live close to Earth's biggest ozone hole. Blue light and UV dangers exist all year round, even on cloudy days. So protect your eyes and enhance your vision with one of the most advanced pair of sunglasses you can buy. Order today.

“Having tried various sunglasses I find the anti-glare factor and improved vision with BLOK to be amazing. Even driving on overcast days my vision is still sharp and clear. I highly recommend these sunglasses to everyone” Noel Colman – Peakhurst NSW “As a roof tiler out in the heat & sun all day I used to get a lot of headaches, until I used your BLOK sunglasses. I find the clarity unbelievable and would rate them 9 out of 10. Excellent value! By far the best I have ever purchased" Colin Underwood – Viewbank VIC “I drive from the Gold Coast to Brisbane and back every day for work. BLOK's shut out glare and really do make everything sharper. At the beach, shades of the sea are much more distinct and I can see distant objects that are almost invisible to the naked eye." T. Thompson - Gold Coast QLD “When I used your sunglasses I was absolutely astounded at the clarity. I've recently had lens replacements due to cataracts and this has restored my eyesight. So you can understand my amazement when I used your product and found my vision had improved - in my opinion - by a further 10%. I can now see better than ever before" Mr K Schmierer – Boonah QLD “I live in east Arnhem Land and spend a lot of time outdoors, especially fishing. BLOK sunglasses completely remove glare, maintain natural colours and are light and comfortable. The clarity of BLOK when looking into the water is superb.” Craig Pullen – Nhulumby NT

The lenses are polarised. Polarised lenses have a micro-thin, invisible film which acts like a ‘venetian blind’ blocking the horizontal glare bouncing off water, cars and other shiny surfaces. They’re particularly good for driving as they (very noticeably) cut hazardous dashboard reflections on your windscreen. The remarkable effect of this blue-block and polarised combination got me very excited about the value of this product. But I soon learnt more facts that absolutely convinced me. BLOK® lenses also block harmful UV rays and are made from anti-scratch CR-39, one of the finest high resolution materials in the world. "I am extremely happy with the BLOK sunglasses and have told many people how good they are. I am an ardent supporter and am happy for you to use anything I write if it helps you sell more of these excellent glasses" Dr J Huyton - Bruce ACT “I took 2 weeks to order your glasses thinking it was just a gimmick. My wife has Macular Degeneration and can’t stand the sunlight, even with other sunglasses on. So I thought I'd give the BLOK's a go. Now she has no more eyestrain and is delighted with them. The best $87 we have ever spent!” Mr D Lowe – Modbury Nth SA
