Giving back for a better environment
Members save 10% on carbon offsets
We live in a lucky place. It’s a truly beautiful state, and we’d like it to stay that way. So we’re giving back for a sustainable WA. Sustainability includes initiatives like our Member Carbon Offset Program that gives members a 10% discount on carbon offsets for home and car emissions. We do all this and more, because we’re proud of our home. And we want the next generation to be just as proud.
See how you can benefit at rac.com.au/environment Offer is subject to change without notice and is only available to current RAC members. Carbon Neutral Charitable Fund is the product issuer and is an organisation independent of the RAC. Better transport options for older Western Australians Providing reliable, safe and convenient transport options for our older Western Australians is an issue that should concern everyone. The ability to own and drive a car is often taken for granted. The convenience of having a car is not always appreciated until it is unavailable, particularly in times of urgent need. Without a car we must find suitable alternatives. We may be forced to rely on others, and if family or friends are unavailable, we may have to miss out on certain activities altogether. RAC’s Ageing and Driving Survey of 1,200 65 to 90-year-olds and beyond found as people age, they typically have fewer people around them to depend on and fewer transport options. This can lead to the car being their main form of mobility and a source of independence. The survey found this lack of reliable and safe transport options means many older motorists feel they have little choice but to drive in order to maintain their independence and avoid putting pressure on family and friends. Although the private car remains the primary mode of transport for older drivers, the survey also found car usage reduced with increasing age. Around 50 per cent of drivers aged 85 years and over drive less than 5,000km per year, and 45 per cent of drivers aged over 90 choose to drive less than 3,000km per year.
Public transport is not necessarily a readily available or convenient alternative. The survey also found people’s confidence in using public transport dropped as they aged. Public transport was used more widely by 65 to 69-year-olds, at two to three times per week, compared with 82 per cent of those aged 85 and over using it never or less than once a month. Western Australia is experiencing a demographic shift. As a community, we are living longer and getting older. By 2036, there will be more than three times the number of people aged over 85 than there are currently. This is an issue that is not going to resolve itself any time soon. As a state, we must develop an agreed plan for how we will meet these challenges. This comes from greater investment in a range of transport options specifically catering to the older demographic. Although the car is an important form of mobility, even without access to a private vehicle, older people should be able to remain mobile and connected to their community. l

Our winning letter
Big vehicle etiquette
Name and address provided
Wrong roads for road trains I have worked in Wheatbelt areas all my life. My job required that I drive in excess of 20,000km per year over my 50 years of working life. During that time I have witnessed many near misses and accidents caused by driver inattention
and equally as many near misses and accidents caused by roads not engineered nor built for road trains. At times, the wind suction from the swinging trailers of road trains has shaken my car from side to side as I pass them coming the other way. I would like to see all roads and highways in the Wheatbelt engineered for safe road-train usage. There is an economic need for road trains in the Wheatbelt provided they can be driven safely on our roads. Name and address provided
Heading for the country Whenever the opportunity arises we like to take a road trip through rural Western Australia, but it’s sad to see the decline in our rural towns. These towns are hanging on by a thread and it is our business (in a small way) that is keeping them afloat. We should all try to help. Do a country trip instead of following the pack to overcrowded tourist spots on the WA coastal strip. There is incredible scenery and history to be found in our inland, rural areas. Greg Wilton
Hard act to follow
Let’s reward good drivers
Over the years I have caused the eyes of many a younger person to glaze over with my stories about learning to drive on gravel roads in my father’s 1952 Hillman Minx, with its farm-tractor steering, armbreaking gear changes and the general manoeuvrability of a steamroller. This will now cease as I bow my head in deference to the story of the O’Doherty family’s 1934 Hillman Minx (Horizons, Member Lounge, June/July), which is still in the family and on the road today. That is one hard act to follow!
We hear so often in the media about bad driving and the issues surrounding demerit points. Clearly there’s a place for this system, however, as a driver of many years with a clean record and full quota of demerit points, I pose the question: Why is there no system in place to actively reward safe drivers with the accumulation of ‘merit points’? I’m no psychologist, but I think it is commonly accepted that people respond better to a reward than a penalty.

I work for a tour company and drive a large and heavy vehicle. I also drive many more kilometres than most regular road users. During this time on the road I have witnessed some horrifying and silly decisions by other road users, putting not only themselves at risk, but also my passengers. Some of the incidents include: overtaking while rounding a bend with no visibility to oncoming traffic; overtaking across double white lines; and cars overtaking when they shouldn’t, then braking in front of me as they zip back in, causing me to brake heavily. A lack of understanding among the general public of how larger, heavier vehicles differ from other vehicles in movement and control is a huge part of the issue. I believe other road users simply don’t understand how long it takes for a large and heavy vehicle to stop safely and how much space they require in order to turn safely. There needs to be a better awareness of this difference in order to prevent more of these incidents occurring.

Police presence heightens driver awareness to do the right thing. • Even a cardboard cut-out of a police officer on the side of the road works. • Watch behaviour change in the presence of a police vehicle! • It stops people texting while driving – there are no radars for that. • I immediately look at my speedometer. • People tend to bend the rules if no one’s looking.

After lobbying by RAC, the third-partyinsurance law is altered to allow spouse claims against their partners in vehicle crashes where negligence can be established.
RAC continues to expand its WA travel and touring services with its first venture into accommodation-grading services, through a grading scheme for caravan parks.
The club advocates for the compulsory installation of Motor Vehicle Standards’ approved seatbelts.
1973 Thirty-nine members join RAC Travel’s first escorted tour. The tour group and guide travel to New Zealand. It is the first of what will become a very popular travel option.
1974 The first RAC metropolitan branch office opens at the corner of Price Street and South Terrace in Fremantle.
1973 With the fitting of seatbelts in new cars now compulsory, RAC seeks legislation banning the sale of non-approved seatbelts and child restraints.
1977 RAC Insurance introduces motorcycle cover for machines over 500cc.
1975 It is the end of an era as RAC discontinues its directional signposting program. The maintenance of existing signs is handed over to local authorities.

To mark WA’s 150th anniversary, RAC launches Operation Overland, a gruelling overland journey from London to Perth with eight drivers in four vehicles. The trip takes 12 weeks and also serves to promote WA to international travellers.
With membership at more than 300,000, a new member category is created, the master member, allowing a member to nominate a vehicle that is covered no matter who is driving it.
1983 RAC is appointed to monitor emergency telephones on the Kwinana and Mitchell freeways.
1984 RAC’s Touring department arranges its first four-wheel drive Explorer Tour across WA to Alice Springs.
1985 A new Road Service control room and a dedicated phone number for emergency calls helps keep roadside assistance response times to a minimum.

would most likely use one in the case of a vehicle breakdown or incident if it were available within a 500m walk. Poll respondents commented that using a mobile phone was the preferred method of contact in a breakdown or incident for reasons of safety and convenience, but the availability of roadside phones provided added comfort should using a mobile phone not be possible.
South-west WA’s storm season runs from May to October, bringing heavy rain, lightning, hail, flash flooding and gale-force winds. During this time it is important to take steps to protect your home and family from dangerous weather. • Check your roof and gutters for damage or loose material and make repairs as needed. • Clear gutters and downpipes of leaves and blockages. • Trim tree branches near your home and hire a contractor to clear trees from power lines. • Clear loose objects and rubbish from your yard, balcony or patio. • Prepare an emergency plan including a relocation plan in case your home is flooded. • Consider what you will do with your pets and know how to turn off the gas, electricity and water supplies. • Prepare an emergency kit with portable radio, torch, spare
batteries, first-aid kit and family emergency plan. • Display a list of emergency phone numbers in an easily accessible location. If your home sustains storm damage you cannot attend to yourself, call the SES for emergency assistance on 132 500. SES volunteers can make temporary emergency repairs to homes that are badly damaged, including damage caused by fallen trees and storm-damaged roofs. During a storm it is important to find safe shelter and keep up to date with the latest weather information and advice from emergency services. For more information on storm safety visit dfes.wa.gov.au/ wintersafe.

RAC launches Little Legends Club
Does car colour influence crash risk? A recent Australian study found that white cars have the lowest crash risk compared with cars of other colours. The study found a number of colours were associated with a higher crash risk, including black, blue, grey, green, red and silver. The association between colour and crash risk was strongest during daylight hours and the relative crash risk could be up to 10 per cent higher for car colours other than white. A Spanish study also found that the
association between crash involvement and car colour was strongest during the day. Additionally, it found black cars had the highest risk of involvement in crashes, while white and yellow cars had a lower risk. Neither study could confirm if car colour was actually an issue or if it was related to the behaviour of drivers who chose a certain colour, but given a choice between otherwise identical cars, the risk-minimising advice would be to choose a light-coloured car over darker vehicles, particularly black.
RAC has launched a fun, free, road-safety membership for children – RAC Little Legends Club. The membership helps primary school students learn about bicycle, pedestrian and passenger safety on and around roads and gives children and teachers access to online resources including multi-level interactive games and in-class road-safety presentations. The membership also includes discounts and special offers for children such as offers on movie tickets and zoo entry. To join visit rac.com.au/littlelegends.
Preventing accidental house fires Last year, 849 Western Australian homes were damaged or destroyed by fire, according to the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES). Glen Walker, RAC Insurance Home Claims Manager, said house fires can put significant stress on the family, who can be inconvenienced for months while their home is being repaired. “We’d like to educate our members and the wider WA community on fire safety in the home, to avoid the emotional and physical turmoil that a house fire can cause.” Common causes of accidental fires in the home include flammable items being left near heaters, open fires and candles, appliances such as dishwashers and tumble dryers being left running when no one is
home, and incorrectly installed downlights or heating systems. Power-boards that contain a dust build-up can also become hazardous. If dust enters unused sockets when there is moisture in the air it can act as an electrical conductor. A simple blanking plug that blocks unused sockets can help reduce fire risk. And remember to avoid piggy-backing or overloading powerboards. You should also: • Check your heater and fireplace for built-up dust or ash.
• Have your air-conditioner serviced every year. • Turn off and unplug appliances not in use. • Invest in a fire blanket for the kitchen. • Always use licensed and qualified tradesmen to install lighting or heating systems. • Ensure smoke alarms are installed in appropriate locations in your home and test them every month. For more fire-prevention tips check the RAC Insurance factsheet at rac.com.au/insurance/tips, or visit dfes.wa.gov.au. August / September 2015 Horizons 13

1 Sluggish acceleration You’re likely to know when your vehicle is being abnormally sluggish, and it could be any number of reasons. Ensuring you’re using the correct fuel for your vehicle is important, as using lower octane fuels can be detrimental to a vehicle’s performance if the manufacturer recommends premium fuels. Dirty air cleaners and clogged fuel injectors

hat should you do when your car starts misbehaving? How do you know if the problem is serious or easily fixed? Whether your car is vintage, brand new, or a well-maintained and trusted family vehicle, you’re likely to experience at least one of these symptoms over the life of your car ownership. When your car sends warning signs that something’s not right, it’s vital that these signs are not ignored. An early fix is the smart approach, as is regular maintenance to help prevent these problems from developing in the first place.
can also cause sluggish performance, as can general engine and transmission wear. Low tyre pressures, which increase the rolling resistance of a tyre, can slow things down, too. Again, regular maintenance can make all the difference here. Action: Take the car to an auto service centre promptly for diagnosis and repair.
2
When your car sends warning signs that something’s not right, it’s vital that these signs are not ignored. An early fix is the smart approach...
Noisy / squeaky brakes Good brakes are vital, but being out of sight, they can also be out of mind. Always keep your ears open for unusual sounds when braking. Some brake pads also have small metal tabs that cause squealing when the pads are nearly worn out, so this can also be an indication that the pads need replacing. If squealing is due to worn brake pads or shoes, they might be causing costly damage to the rotor or drum. Squealing could also point to a defective rotor or drum surface. Remember, driving with faulty brakes is illegal, dangerous, and could lead to further mechanical damage. Action: Drive or have the car towed to a mechanic for urgent diagnosis and repair.
3 Smoky exhaust Smoke signals should never be ignored. They can have various causes, some minor and others a major cause for concern. In a modern diesel vehicle, excessive black-smoke emissions may be due to poor fuel combustion caused by faulty injectors or the exhaust system.

This smoke can also be a characteristic of older diesel cars. In petrol cars, black-smoke emissions can be caused by too much fuel going into the engine because of a dirty air filter or a faulty electronic sensor. More seriously, the release of blue-grey smoke could be a sign of worn engine components, such as the piston rings and/or cylinder bores.
If you smell exhaust or fuel fumes, treat the situation as urgent. Exhaust contains lethal carbon monoxide, while petrol fumes are a fire and health risk.
Action: Don’t hesitate to take the car to a repairer for diagnosis and remediation before further damage occurs. Image; iStockphoto
4 Smell of fuel or exhaust in the cabin If you smell exhaust or fuel fumes, treat the situation as urgent. Exhaust contains lethal carbon monoxide, while petrol fumes are a fire and health risk. One of the most dangerous aspects of carbon monoxide is that it is odourless. Before you take action, check whether a vehicle on the road ahead of you could be emitting exhaust or petrol fumes. More concerning explanations for exhaust fumes include a leak in the exhaust system, anywhere from the engine to the tail pipe. Similarly, fuel fumes could point to a leak anywhere in the fuel system, from the tank to the fuel lines or somewhere in the engine compartment. This should be treated as an imminent fire danger. Action: Park your vehicle safely, turn off the ignition, stand clear and seek roadside assistance.
5 Thumps and other noises The cause of noises such as knocks, whines, rattles, hisses and clunks can be difficult to pinpoint. If the engine makes a knocking sound, in petrol engines this is most commonly a sign of either poor tuning and/or the fuel octane being too low.
Whines can emanate from a drive unit, axle, wheel bearings, gearbox, or power-steering pump. Though they could also be coming from a passenger! The source of rattles could be anything in the vehicle, from the exhaust or hard fuel lines needing to be better secured to poorly fitting glass or body panels or even a kid’s toy under a seat. The suspension, universal joints, axle, steering and engine mounts can also clunk and thump. You could try to pinpoint a noise by test driving and visual inspection. It’s possible that there might be a quick fix, such as tightening a clamp, but a pricey diagnosis and repair is, unfortunately, just as likely. Action: If you can’t identify the cause of the noise, take a friend for a drive for a second opinion before taking the car to a mechanic.
6 Difficulty starting You turn the key, only to be frustrated. Click! Nothing. Or maybe the starter motor only cranks anaemically. It might even crank strongly yet still refuse to fire up. We are in a mystery zone for many motorists. The battery may be a suspect if it is old, has loose connections or if the cranking and dashboard lighting are weak. If the cranking and dash lights are OK, and the battery and starter are exonerated, then further investigation is needed.
Other culprits can include faulty fuel or ignition systems (poor fuel delivery, faulty spark plugs or leads) and let’s face it, an empty fuel tank. Action: Call out a roadside patrol for a diagnosis, an on-the-spot fix or new battery, or a tow to a repairer.
7 Excessive vibrations Annoying vibrations can emerge from components such as the wheels, brakes, axles and engine. If you wanted to try to diagnose and solve the problem yourself, here are a few ideas: check the tyre rims for damage, nuts for tightness and wheels for wobble. If you have been off-road, dried mud on the wheels may be a cause. Look for incorrect tyre pressure, uneven wear or separated tread. Vibrations during braking could also be due to a warped brake rotor. Other vibration sources could include axles or driveshafts that are out of balance or damaged. With a damaged driveshaft, the car might drive just fine for a while but will then begin to shake. Worn-out constant-velocity (CV) joints fall under the same category. Action: Take the car to a trusted service centre for diagnosis and repair. l August / September 2015 Horizons 19

Going with the flow We’ve come a long way since WA’s first traffic lights were installed in 1953. Jane Hammond looks at how the system is serving us today.

ave you ever had the feeling that the traffic lights are conspiring against you? When every light seems to turn red on your approach, particularly when you are already running late? Yet at other times your luck seems to turn and it’s nothing but green lights all the way? Traffic lights in WA are configured using a complex computer system. While the aim is always to keep you moving no matter where you are, there are many variables that must be managed concurrently to balance the needs of everyone interacting with our road network. It’s about ensuring the safe and efficient movement of people, not just vehicles.
A two-year study funded by RAC and undertaken in partnership with Main Roads...found that retiming traffic signals could help reduce peak-hour congestion.
WA’s signal system WA’s traffic signals are controlled by a system known as SCATS – the Sydney Coordinated Adaptive Traffic System, which was, as its name suggests, developed in NSW. Depending on how it’s set up, SCATS is able to adjust signal timings depending on the time of day and traffic demands. The system has an adaptive traffic-response capability, meaning that it can adapt to cater for changes in traffic volumes and movements to help keep the traffic moving. It can also coordinate adjacent sets of traffic signals to improve flow along major routes, something that is especially important during peak periods. The system can also be adjusted manually by system operators at Main Roads’ Traffic Operations Centre (TOC), located in Northbridge. Operators monitor the SCATS system and traffic conditions and can make manual adjustments in response to congestion, traffic incidents, or faulty infrastructure, for example. SCATS works on three levels to manage the operation of traffic lights in WA. The first is the traffic signal controller, which is a blue-grey metal box located on the road verge near
a set of lights. Sensors in the road located near the stop line pick up traffic movements and rates of flow; this information is processed by the controller and is then fed back to one of 12 regional computers. The regional computers are responsible for the operation of up to 128 separate traffic signal controlled intersections in a specific area. Each computer combines the on-road data with pre-programmed information to adjust the traffic signal timings. The third level of control is the Central Monitoring Computer located in the TOC; this is linked to the regional computers and controls the overall SCATS system. Traffic Management Operations Manager for Main Roads John Venables says SCATS helps keep the traffic flowing. “SCATS is an advanced real-time traffic-control system that optimises traffic flow on the road network, 24-hours a day.
“It helps ensure that a driver’s stops will be less frequent if driving according to the current conditions and speed limit in the direction of the major traffic flow,” says Mr Venables.
Maximising efficiency A two-year study funded by RAC and undertaken in partnership with Main Roads, which ended last year, investigated the use of technology to further improve the performance of WA’s traffic signals. The study found that by using an alternate approach to retiming traffic signals, peak-hour congestion could be considerably reduced without the need for new physical infrastructure. The first stage of the study used specialised software to test a range of options to improve signal operations at two demonstration sites. The second stage used recommendations from these tests and applied them in a real-world trial to a section of Orrong Road between Francisco Street and Oats Street.

Traffic lights Q&A

RAC Senior Manager of Policy and Research Anne Still says the trial demonstrated that improvements could be made to traffic flow along Orrong Road and its side roads. Cutting the total cycle time at the intersections – the time it takes for all movements to receive a green light – by up to 50 seconds, resulted in substantial improvements in traffic flow.
Average vehicle queue lengths... were reduced by up to 34 per cent.
This, along with the use of in-built SCATS functions to make the traffic signals more reactive to congestion, reduced delays. “Shorter cycle times resulted in vehicles getting a green light more frequently, helping traffic to clear faster, and resulting in shorter queues. “The average vehicle queue lengths at the four intersections along the trial corridor were reduced by up to 34 per cent, while journey times were up to 20 per cent faster,” she says. Ms Still says the study demonstrated that by using technology better, we can make our road network work smarter. “By changing the way we manage systems such as traffic signals we can squeeze more out of the existing infrastructure and help tackle Perth’s growing congestion problem.” Main Roads’ John Venables says this year they are looking at optimising traffic signals at 93 intersections on selected corridors as part of Main Roads’ Traffic Signal Optimisation Program. The corridors being examined include Leach Highway, Canning Highway, Stirling Highway, Marmion Avenue, Wanneroo Road and Charles Street. The program is a new initiative by Main Roads to manage Perth’s congestion and aims to improve through-put, journey times and importantly, reliability. “We are looking to lower the cycle time to keep things moving as optimally as we can,” says Mr Venables. “Once you coordinate a set of signals then adjacent signals, to remain in step, all have to remain at the same cycle length. The critical intersection – the one that is most congested – has to drive the cycle length. “What we try to do with coordination is shift traffic through in bunches that we call platoons. A platoon of traffic moves through one set (of traffic lights) and then moves to the second set. “Perth’s congestion is driving us to get the maximum efficiency out of our signals.” l
Why is it that when you get caught by one red light you often get caught by several more? SCATS, the system controlling WA traffic signals, allows for the coordination of adjacent sets of traffic lights. Groups of vehicles (known as platoons) released from one set of lights on the major road, and travelling at the speed limit, would receive green lights at a number of intersections. If you enter from a side road or are not travelling in with the main group, you may be out of sync with the lights. Not all signals are, or can be, coordinated, though. Why do you sometimes sit at a red light for a long time when there are no cars coming? SCATS is designed to adjust to traffic demands but this feature is not used at all signals at all times of the day. The detectors in the road tell the signal controller when a car is waiting and the controller changes the lights. Sometimes the detectors can fail but more often, if the lights are not adjusting based on demand, it is because they are operating on a fixed timing plan that is set for a particular time of day. Why do some lights change back to yellow / red so quickly after turning green? The loop detectors in the road detect the presence of vehicles and also gaps in the traffic. If a vehicle is stopped back from the lights it may not be detected. Likewise, if there is a delay in vehicles taking off from a green light or a gap in the flow of approaching traffic, the lights may change again. Why do I often see pedestrians crossing at some signals when vehicles have a green light to turn? At many signals in Perth, pedestrians cross parallel with the traffic. They receive a green pedestrian light, typically giving them a five-second head start before traffic running parallel to the crossing receives a green light. Despite having a green light, turning vehicles must give way to pedestrians.

ore than just the purchase price, registration and fuel, the true cost of owning a car can vary greatly between models and makes. RAC’s annual review of vehicle operating costs looks at the cost of running a range of popular models from on road costs to interest payments, depreciation, insurance and more. Owning a car is a necessity for many people, and as one of the most significant purchases consumers will make, it pays to know exactly what the vehicle you’re driving will cost you to run. Compared with the 2014 results, we saw a slight decrease in the overall average cost of running a car in WA. This was due to factors including the lower fuel prices over the survey period and the lower purchase prices of some new vehicles.
RAC Manager Vehicles and Fuels Alex Forrest says this year’s report reveals some interesting changes in the market. “In February this year the Suzuki Celerio, which sits in the micro car class, was released with very low drive-away pricing of $12,990. The Suzuki cost $100.02 per week to run, which is nearly $10 less per week than the second placed Mitsubishi Mirage, and notably lower than last year’s overall winner, the Holden Barina Spark at $112.70. “The light car class was won by another Suzuki, the Swift. “The Mitsubishi Lancer was the cheapest of the small cars to own and run, denying the Volkswagen Golf a third straight win in this hugely popular category. “Of course, safety is paramount in any vehicle so we’d urge buyers looking in these categories to check the ANCAP safety ratings of these vehicles.”
Mr Forrest says small SUVs are also a booming market segment with very strong competition. “The Mazda CX-3 was another new vehicle released in 2015, which moved ahead of the competition to take out its category, just pipping another category newcomer, the Renault Captur.” “Mazda replicated the result in medium SUVs, too, winning with its CX-5. And the Ford Territory’s sharp pricing helped it to a win in the large SUV category.” Mr Forrest says depreciation remains the single biggest factor in the cost of owning a car, but because it’s a cost that is only felt when an owner comes to sell a car, it’s often not a major consideration at the time of purchase. Electric cars were again the cheapest vehicles to fuel given the cost of electricity, and this year the Nissan Leaf was again the cheapest electric vehicle to own and run.

t is 28°C on a Perth summer day and a little girl is trapped in the back seat of her mother’s locked BMW. She is distressed; her face is red and she’s kicking out with her legs, trying to free herself from her child restraint as the temperature inside the black car inches up. RAC Roadside Assistance patrol Tony Martin has been on the scene for only two minutes when the child passes out. He knows he has to work quickly. Freeing her has become a matter of life and death. Using a special device, which also prevents any shattered glass from escaping, he pulls the window out cleanly in a single piece. The threeyear-old is whisked out of the car by her hysterical mother who rushes her inside to a cold shower and hydration. “Some people give the keys to the child to play with as a sort of a toy,” Tony explains. “Mum or dad steps out of the car, the child hits the button and they are locked in. That sort of situation can get a bit scary,” he says. It’s not unusual for RAC patrols to be called out to this exact scenario. A survey of patrols in 2015 revealed a surprising 97 per cent had to rescue a child or pet locked in a car. Tony has been working for the RAC for 16 years, 14 as a patrol, in a wide network of RAC staff and patrols helping members across Western Australia. Last year alone they were responsible for assisting more than 400,000 stranded members. A wiry New Zealander, Tony says that after years in a mechanics workshop he loves the freedom of being on the road and meeting new people, sometimes in very interesting situations. The 2015 patrol survey revealed just how interesting these situations can be. One patrol recounted attending a unique member call-out; a naked woman whose clothes were locked in the boot. Even more unusual was the member who called for help “with a parrot stuck in my car”; the Good Samaritan had
below and opposite: RAC Roadside Assistance patrol Tony Martin is one of a wide network of RAC staff and patrols helping members across Western Australia.

That sort of situation can get a bit scary. rescued it from the grille of his car and the unconscious bird lay on the passenger seat while the member drove to the vet. The member contacted the RAC when the stunned bird regained consciousness, flew up into the dashboard, and didn’t want to come out. As Tony says, no two call-outs or breakdowns are the same. But some problems are more common than others. In the three hours he’s been on patrol today, it’s battery trouble that has been the most common complaint. Flat batteries are one of the most frequent call-outs, alongside damaged tyres and overheating, and it’s the reason why Tony’s bright yellow state-of-the-art Mercedes-Benz Vito RAC van is loaded with 24 different types of battery. This is only Tony’s second shift in the Vito. He gets the battery in William’s old Nissan Patrol fired up and the goodnatured fly-in, fly-out worker can finally exit the Perth car park where he was parked overnight. The flat battery in Pete’s MercedesBenz four-wheel drive is much more complex to fix and he’s cranky, too. Tony, with the patience of a saint and the skill of a master mechanic, placates Pete and replaces his battery.
Getting the old battery out is a delicate task; it’s under the seat and connected to one of the vehicle’s four computer ‘brains’, which could easily be damaged by the battery acid and water that has collected in the battery well. Pete’s smiling again and on his way in under an hour. “Hopefully, they all leave with a smile on their face. That’s usually the case,” Tony says. Mark’s car is the third job and is the only vehicle Tony is unable to get back on the road. He’s checked the battery and it is ok. The thick, putrid fumes lingering around the engine and its dying splutter indicate that this car has more serious problems – possibly a tank of bad diesel. Tony calls the tow truck to the multi-storey, inner-city car park where Mark’s car is stranded. Though it’s bad news for Mark, he’s full of admiration for the determined RAC patrol, poking and prodding under the bonnet. “These guys know everything,” he says. That reputation, as expert mechanics who can diagnose problems on the hop and fix on the fly, goes all the way back to 1926 when HV Mason and RL Stockbridge were recruited as the RAC’s first roadside assistance patrols. below: An RAC Roadside Assistance patrol.
Dangerous driving Senior roadside assistance patrol Charlie Atkinson says it’s not just RAC patrols at risk on Perth’s busy highways and freeways. Road maintenance and emergencyservices personnel also put their lives on the line when they attend jobs on busy roadsides.
I turned up at a job where a young woman was being abused in the traffic ... A man was out of his car and standing over her and having a real go at her. He backed off when I turned up and then he drove off.
They rode Matchless motorcycles with sidecars crammed with tools, six-volt batteries, battery leads, tyre levers, a gallon-can of petrol and a ‘trouble light’ for night jobs. Motorcycles continued as patrol vehicles until the late 1940s when they began to be replaced by Austin A40 vans. By 1957 the RAC was offering the 24-hour, seven-day-a-week roadside assistance service it still provides today. In 2015, the work of RAC’s Roadside Assistance patrols takes place in a very different road environment. WA’s surging population is placing increasing pressure on our roads. A recent Infrastructure Australia audit revealed that by 2031, seven of the nation's 10 most congested roads, including the top four, will be in Perth. That pressure is already being felt by motorists and
their frustration is evident. Tony says the escalation in ‘road rage’ is an issue that patrols are worried about. He recalls being dragged from a member’s car he was working on, by an enraged bloke who had just snapped. And Tony’s not alone; a third of patrols have been threatened or assaulted and 85 per cent have experienced milder abuse such as tooting, verbal insults and rude gestures. “I turned up at a job where a young woman was being abused in the traffic because she’d broken down,” Tony says. “A man was out of his car and standing over her and having a real go at her – he was really angry. He backed off when I turned up and then he drove off. “Drivers really need to ‘chill out’ on Perth’s roads,” he says. l
The 2015 survey of RAC patrols reports that Perth’s roads are busier with drivers increasingly distracted. More than ever, they are ignoring road rules, driving in emergency and bus lanes, crossing white lines, running red lights and failing to heed slow-down signs and flashing warning lights. It’s not surprising then, that a whopping 91 per cent of RAC patrols said they have had a ‘near miss’ over the past year. Mr Atkinson says it’s for this reason that RAC supports the introduction of ‘slow down, move over’ rules like those in the force in most US states where drivers must slow when they see the flashing lights of an emergency services vehicle, tow truck or roadside assistance van. Or they should move over to another lane if possible as they pass the scene. Patrol Tony Martin echoes the thoughts of many of his colleagues when he says without those rules, there’s really no safe place for patrols attending freeway breakdowns any more. “I was nearly hit on the freeway by a four-wheel drive coming sideways at me on the freeway in peak hour traffic,” he says. “The woman driving was trying to avoid a collision with a guy who cut her off – she swerved and then realised she was going to hit the side of my van in the emergency lane and stopped in time.” He says it was a lucky escape because he was in the driver’s seat at the time.

A Nestled in the northern hills of the Darling Range, the valley is a citrus-growing centre and small self-serve stalls are dotted along the road.
fter three months on a strictly sugar-free diet, an opportunity for a Sunday drive in the picturesque Chittering Valley in search of the cake road-tested by Prince Harry earlier this year, was the perfect excuse for a Sunday drive. The prince stopped at the Bindoon Bakehaus and, after selecting a Banoffee éclair from the vast array of cakes on offer, gave it the royal thumbs up. Chittering’s growing reputation as a food lover’s destination was given an instant Banoffee-led boost. Less than an hour north of Perth, the Chittering Valley region is filled with rolling hills, which between May and September become lush and green, making the drive an absolute joy. Head up the Great Northern Highway from Perth until you reach Bullsbrook, then turn off at Chittering Road following the route as it snakes through idyllic farmland and pretty orchards to the even prettier Chittering Valley Road, where you’ll eventually loop back to Chittering Road. Nestled in the northern hills of the Darling Range, the valley is a citrusgrowing centre and small, self-serve stalls are dotted along the road, selling fruit and tomatoes to passing drivers for a few coins placed in an honour box.
The countryside changes from gently undulating open paddocks and orchard- and vineyard-covered hills to fields of crops and undisturbed bushland reserves where, in spring, you can see an incredible array of wildflowers. Granite outcrops and sandy brown soils gradually change to red loam as you travel through the shire. The roads are good and the drive engaging and there are plenty of places to stop and explore. There are a range of special drive trails, from a winery trail to sculpture trail or the trail that takes you to a series of walking tracks. We chose a hybrid of the trail tours, taking the winery tour for part of the route, stopping at the wonderful Stringybark Winery on Chittering Road, one of the oldest vineyards in the valley. The views from its restaurant verandah looking out across the paddocks to the forest provided a tranquil backdrop at lunch. There are many wineries with restaurants and cafés offering lunch and Devonshire teas along the 76km trail, so there are plenty of opportunities to sample local gourmet produce. Some even have open picnic areas so you can enjoy some of the produce you’ve picked up along the way.

Fast facts Where is it The Chittering Valley is just over an hour’s drive north-east of Perth.
When to Go Spring is the best time to see Chittering Valley’s wildflowers in full bloom. Plan your visit around a special festival or event. Highlights include: The Taste of Chittering, Sunday August 23; Wildflower Festival, 17 to 20 September; and Bindoon Agricultural Show, Sunday October 17. Weekend market days are held on the fourth Sunday of every month in Bindoon.
Places to Stay There are a range of accommodation options from B&Bs to farm stays, hotels and caravan parks. See chittering.travel for more information.
Don’t Miss The pies, cakes and banoffee éclairs at the Bindoon Bakehaus in Bindoon, the views from the top of Blackboy Ridge Reserve, along with the spring wildflowers, and the scenic drive along Chittering Valley Road.
More Information The Chittering Visitors’ Centre, 6180 Great Northern Highway, Bindoon, has free maps and brochures detailing local attractions and trails. Phone 9576 1100. Email bindinfo@iinet.net.au.
After our lunch we drove on to Blackboy Ridge Reserve in order to take in the scenery and work off the excess calories. As you enter the reserve from Chittering Road, look out for the largerthan-life grass tree sculpture. Its rust colour is the only clue that it’s actually a piece of art and not a tree. One of five pieces in the Chittering sculpture trail developed in the 1990s as part of a Central TAFE Art School project, you can pick up a map of the trail at the Chittering Visitor Information Centre, where one of the five sculptures on the trail is displayed. The 684-hectare Blackboy Ridge Reserve is a perfect place for wildflower spotting, a quiet picnic or, if you’re feeling energetic, a hill climb. If you are opting for the latter leave the car at the picnic area and follow the walking trail for around 750 metres until you reach the top of the ridge where you will be rewarded with sweeping views across the Brockman River flats. It’s a winding trail but generally well graded and takes between 30-45 minutes to climb. The area is a bird-watcher’s dream with more than 60 species known to
visit including Carnaby’s cockatoos, splendid fairy wrens, honeyeaters, and thornbills. During early spring you’ll be treated to a spectacular display of colour as wildflowers spread throughout the reserve. To view even more of the region’s wildflowers head towards the woodland areas along nearby Julimar Road. From Blackboy Ridge Reserve, continue along the Chittering Road to Bindoon, watching out for another of the surprising sculptures, this time a large stone bell in a paddock around 5km from the reserve on your left. Just before you get to Bindoon, take the time to stop at the historic Holy Trinity Church, built around 1886 from local stone. The church’s gravestones provide an insight into life in Chittering over the past century. The Bindoon Bakehaus is an absolute must stop. It has arguably the best coffee north of Perth and cakes are literally fit for a prince. From Bindoon head north till you meet the Bindoon Moora Road and follow it through farmlands to the town

of Wannamal, the northern most town of the Chittering shire. Wannamal was once the social heart of the district but is a tiny town with a wealth of history. It takes its name from the nearby lake and is a popular place to visit the wildflower-trail during the season when everlastings are abundant. Take a self-guided heritage walk through the town and discover the stories of some of the area’s early European pioneers. By the end of our round trip, which also included visiting the historic town of New Norcia, we had clocked up more than 300kms and our boot was packed with Chittering produce from local jams and chutneys from Bindoon to fresh tomatoes bought at the farm gate and excellent wine to cellar. And, of course, a new appreciation for Banoffee pastry. l
Extending your trip If you have time to go a little further than the Chittering Valley then New Norcia is well worth the effort. Continue along the Great Northern Highway from Bindoon for just over 50km to reach New Norcia, the nation’s only monastic town. Founded by Spanish Benedictine monks in 1847, New Norcia has been a mission, monastery and an education centre and is a place of spiritual retreat. You can take a two-hour town tour at 11.30am or 1.30pm most days to learn about the history of New Norcia and the region. The town is known for its bakery and it’s worth picking up a loaf of authentic sourdough – but get in early as it often sells out. The monastery’s wines are also well regarded and it also sells special label Abbey Ale, handcrafted in NSW with the
endorsement of the monks. Gingin, 24km north east of Bindoon, is another popular place to visit and the Gravity Discovery Centre on Military Road is a must see, as is the Observatory. The Discovery Centre is WA’s only interactive astronomy and science facility. Here you can learn about the amazing gravitational wave research going on in the centre precinct, get up close and personal to a black hole or watch a rocket launch. If you are staying overnight in Gingin then the friendly Willowbrook Farm Caravan Park at Neergabby, just 4km from the Observatory, is a fine option and will even welcome the family pet.

efore you even board the Orient-Express, Venice’s watery wonderland, where winding canals and gliding gondolas make for a magical stay, puts you in a romantic mood. Strolling from my hotel in the morning, I wander through cobbled laneways, over tiny bridges and past glorious Venetian palaces to get to the train station where I’ll begin one of the world’s most famous train journeys. Modernist Santa Lucia Station may not be terribly alluring but the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express reception desk, where the smiling staff, soft carpet and velvet rope create the atmosphere of an exclusive Hollywood party, is where the excitement starts to build. The first glimpse of the gleaming navy train is a moment to remember – staff clad in blue and gold Balenciaga-designed uniforms, wearing sparkling white gloves, line the platform, ready to greet and assist their passengers. I’m welcomed by Vincent, my charming French cabin steward, who shows me to my double cabin, a beautifully restored 1920s compartment featuring polished wood,
plush seats and art deco lighting. A welcome glass of Prosecco is poured – and then we’re off!
Step back in time The Orient-Express’ history spans a century of luxury travel. The first train ran from Paris to Istanbul (then named Constantinople) in 1883, with further eastern connections added later. In its heyday, it was the favourite of royals and the rich and famous from actress Marlene Dietrich to director Alfred Hitchcock and dancer Josephine Baker. Sadly, the Second World War and the rise of air travel cut demand for extravagant trains, and the OrientExpress completed its final journey in 1977. Several of the carriages were put up for auction and purchased by American businessman James B. Sherwood. He then began a Europewide search to recover the rest of the cabins and restore them to their former glory. The refurbished train first ran again in 1982, carrying actress Liza Minnelli and a host of celebrities on board. Now the Orient-Express attracts luxury train-travel enthusiasts from England, Europe and America.
If we update the carriages we’ll destroy the original experience. Everyone wants to come here because it’s a 1920s fit-out. We are a museum.

Old-fashioned luxury A trip on the Orient-Express comes with high expectations of luxury, intrigue and romance. Fuelled by English crime writer Agatha Christie’s iconic 1934 novel, Murder on the Orient Express, featuring Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, the acclaimed 1974 film adaptation and 2010 TV drama series starring David Suchet have prompted even more fascination with this exotic journey. Nostalgic travellers yearn to recapture the elegance of that era – the rustle of silk gowns, men in handsome tuxedos, and sublime food and wines served by impeccable waiters. The Orient-Express lives up to these lofty expectations, but the authentic experience means there are few modern conveniences. It offers vintagestyle luxury, so you won’t find flat-screen televisions, WiFi, showers or even en suite toilets (the only concession to 21st century technology is a subtle plug for charging your phone and camera). Some tourists complain about the compact cabins, says train manager Michele Rocca, but are soon converted. “They see what their fantastic cabin steward does for them, and are
entertained by our barman Walter. If we update the carriages we’ll destroy the original experience. Everyone wants to come here because it’s a 1920s fit-out. We are a museum,” he says. Returning to the glamour of a bygone age soon seduces. I’m not distracted by technology so I spend time taking in the stellar rural views. The journey covers five countries, spanning the Italian Dolomites, Austrian forests, the Swiss Alps, a small corner of Germany and France. There are spectacular landscapes, mountains and vineyards to enjoy. As the Orient-Express pulls away from the Venetian Lagoon, we pass the ancient northern Italian towns of Padua and Verona, mentioned in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, before verdant lowlands give way to pristine peaks. But if you’re looking for stimulating conversation, the staff is expert – both knowledgeable and entertaining. Thirty-something honeymooners and older couples celebrating wedding anniversaries make up most of the passengers, but there are also a few solo travellers and, thanks to the train’s convivial atmosphere, striking up a conversation is effortless. There’s so much to talk about on this extraordinary journey – the views, the train, the history, the service – it’s proof that this adventure is as much about the people you meet as the places you go.
Gourmet getaway French chef Christian Bodiguel has spent 30 years whipping up culinary treats in the train’s tiny kitchens, ensuring customers never run out of lobster, caviar or champagne. The cuisine pays homage to Venice, Paris and the other renowned gastronomic destinations along the way, drawing on fresh, local produce. Early in the trip, the maître d’ calls at my carriage offering a choice of two meal sittings at lunch and dinner, alternating between three ravishingly restored 1920s dining cars, including the Côte d’Azur, boasting art deco crystal panels by French master René
Fast facts When to go Train trips run to a scheduled timetable from March to November, throughout the European spring, summer and autumn.
Routes The Orient-Express’ routes link London, Paris, Venice, Istanbul, Budapest, Brussels, Prague, Vienna and Stockholm. Classic routes include Venice to Paris and London, or vice versa; Istanbul to Bucharest, Budapest and Venice; and Paris to Istanbul (the latter two run just once a year).
Cabins Double cabins are configured as a lounge with a banquette sofa that converts at night to an upper and lower bunk, accompanied by a small table, footstool and lavish washbasin cabinet. Cabin suites consist of two interconnecting double cabins, which can either be set up with two lower bunks (ideal if you have mobility issues) or turned into a comfy lounge and separate bedroom with stacked bunks. There’s an ornate lavatory at the end of each carriage.
Cost The Venice to Paris route (two days, one night) costs approximately $AU2,580 a person. For other routes, prices start from approximately $AU920 for the one-day Paris to London trip, rising to around $AU8,820 for Istanbul to Venice (six days, five nights). Journeys longer than one night usually include hotel sojourns so guests can shower. Ticket prices include set menus. Drinks and à la carte dining options are extra. wear a jacket and tie, and a tuxedo is welcome; ladies are invited to go to town, and often use the 1920s flapper look for inspiration. Due to space limitations, all this dressing up must be achieved with just one piece of hand luggage, and one suit carrier or overnight bag in your cabin, with another suitcase checked through for storage in the baggage car. I revel in the ritual of getting ready for dinner. The Côte d’Azur dining carriage is the ultimate in chic, with views of sparkling lights as we speed past Lake Geneva. It is a heightened experience – glamorous, exciting and wonderfully romantic. Later, we move on to the convivial Bar Car, where Italian piano maestro Signor Rossi serenades the passengers on the baby grand piano.
Paradise lost Back at my cabin, Vincent has transformed my banquette seat into one comfy single bunk, where the rocking carriage soon lulls me to sleep. At 6.45am, I wake for my continental breakfast of croissants, cakes and a silver pot of coffee. We arrive at Paris Gare de l’Est at 7.20am, although guests are allowed to linger. Leaving this mobile slice of paradise is a wrench, but after more than a century of luxury rail journeys we will surely always have the Orient-Express. l Sophie Davies was a guest of the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express.

Lalique, and black-lacquered L’Oriental. I enjoy a delicious three-course silverservice lunch in the marquetry-decked Etoile du Nord, and the food is exquisite, combining classic French technique with contemporary cooking styles. Only an hour or so later, it’s time for afternoon tea – Earl Grey served with an assortment of cakes, pastries and amuse bouche. With only a short time to recover my appetite, I soon have to start thinking about dressing for dinner. “You can never be overdressed on board,” advises the pre-trip guidelines. “Such is the ambience of the train that guests may wish to dress in their most glamorous finery.” The dress code requests smart daywear, with no tone-lowering jeans, shorts, T-shirts or trainers. 2015 President’s Cruise to Burma
Earlier this year RAC President Esme Bowen hosted the second RAC President’s cruise through Burma. Here she shares some of her favourite stories from the journey. “My husband Wayne and I were joined by 48 RAC members for the cruise from Yangon to Mandalay aboard the Cruiseco Explorer. “We explored many of Burma’s ancient wonders, however the city of Bagan was a highlight, a unique archaeological site with more than 2200 temples and pagodas. “While on the ship we often passed the time on the sun deck watching the world of the Irrawaddy River people as they fished, worked and played along the river’s banks. On the way to the Irrawaddy we visited the Commonwealth War Commentary – a very moving experience. “We visited a lacquer-wear factory to see the production of beautiful lacquer-wear products and afterwards enjoyed the sunset from the top of a temple. “Some of the group experienced a spectacular ride in a hot-air balloon over Old Bagan City. When the early risers returned we sailed a short distance to another, more accessible, jetty in Bagan.
The ship’s captain did this because some of the members had restricted mobility, which was very thoughtful. “During our journey down the Irrawaddy River we visited local fresh food markets, which were vibrant, colourful and quite fascinating. While in Yangon we also visited the Shwedagon Pagoda, an amazing gold structure with surrounding market stalls and spirit houses. “We sailed onto the Shwe Pyi Thar village, a simple village where we were able to walk around the homes and livestock and visit the school. Instead of donating pencils and books and small amounts of cash individually, the RAC members decided to collaborate and as a group generously donated over $500. “Eventually the time came for us to enjoy our final sunrise over the water, our final breakfast and our final morning with our wonderful crew before we bid them farewell. “The true highlight was sharing the experience with the RAC members, who quickly became great friends. The shy, gentle and beautiful people of Myanmar taught us all many things and we came home with memories we will all cherish of our amazing RAC holiday.”
Our blooming state Carpets of wildflowers are now spreading through the southern half of our state, including regions close to Perth, and there are many ways to enjoy the spectacle. To help you plan your wildflower adventure, visit RAC Travel’s wildflower information page at rac.com.au/ wildflowers. Find out about RAC Travel’s fully escorted wildflower tours, download self-drive itineraries and fact sheets, view a map of WA’s wildflower regions and check up on wildflower events. Western Australia is lucky to have more than 12,000 species of wildflowers, around 60 per cent of which are unique to our state. Whether you’re an experienced wildflower enthusiast or just a beginner, this is a stunning natural wonder not to be missed. To find out more visit rac.com.au/wildflowers.

Honda HR-V
I
n February, Honda resurrected a nameplate Australians hadn’t seen since 2001. With the rash of new and updated small SUVs launched in the market in early 2015, the Honda HR-V didn’t arrive a moment too soon. Small SUVs were one of the few vehicle classes to have risen markedly in a market where new car sales in Western Australia overall were down last year and in the early months of 2015. Honda didn’t want to miss a piece of this action. The all-new HR-V is based on the Honda Jazz platform and uses the same 1.8-litre, nonturbo petrol engine as the one in the Civic. It makes 105kW and 172Nm,
which is sent through a CVT (continuously variable transmission) and on to the wheels. In the HR-V’s transmission, there is a torque converter which transfers the engine’s power to the CVT itself. Honda says this helps reduce the high revving that can be a characteristic of pure CVTequipped vehicles and, under acceleration, you can feel the steps in the power delivery, which is preferable to the endless drone. Some throttle flaring is evident, though. A new type of CVT fluid and the wider range of ratios offered by the transmission are said to keep the HR-V’s thirst down and, in regular city driving, we did pretty well, averaging around 8L/100km. In the official
Honda HR-V specifications Price (as tested) Engine Power Torque Claimed fuel economy CO 2 emissions ANCAP safety rating
ADR test, the HR-V VTi-L used 6.9L/100km. The interior’s fit and finish is clean and solid, with high-quality materials throughout. It’s well designed and futuristic but still tasteful. Safety equipment in the HR-V is also good, with a reversing camera standard in all variants, although autonomous braking is only available with the top two VTi-S and VTi-L models. The optional ADAS safety

pack ($1,000) includes further safety-assist tech such as forward collision warning, lane-departure warning and high-beam support. Honda has been out of the small SUV game for 15 years. But it has caught up quickly with the new HR-V, which apart from the slightly buzzy engine, is a very competitive package in the hottest part of the new-car market. l

Jaguar F-Type Coupé
I
n 2014, we labelled the Jaguar F-Type Roadster the most beautiful new car on the market. Well, that label no longer applies because the F-Type Coupé has come along and upstaged last year’s roofless beauty with its tightly drawn tin top and correspondingly taut derrière. Of course, uncompromisingly beautiful design has been Jaguar’s calling card since the 1930s, and clearly this continues in the F-Type Coupé. Although thoroughly modern, the F-Type Coupé also embodies what is widely agreed to be the essence of classic sports car design: a powerful engine up front, two seats and rear-wheel drive. Sweetening the F-Type recipe
even further is the recently added option of a six-speed manual gearbox. The Coupé has the same engine choices as the Roadster versions, meaning a choice of four supercharged engines, which make the most delightful sounds of any new production car on sale today. It blares under power, it blatts on gear changes and on a trailing throttle, it crackles and spits like bacon on a hotplate. This, combined with its lascivious looks and fine handling, will leave you grinning daftly all day. The example we drove was a base model F-Type Coupé with the eight-speed auto, meaning it had the 3.0-litre supercharged V6 with 250kW and 450Nm. This year Jaguar has further
Jaguar F-Type Coupé specifications Price (as tested) Engine Power Torque Claimed fuel economy CO 2 emissions ANCAP safety rating
increased the car’s ability to compete with the sports car heavy hitters from Germany, namely the Porsche 911 and the Mercedes-AMG GT S. The most important additions are that six-speed manual and all-wheel drive. Electric powersteering is also now standard across the range. From a practical point of view, like the Roadster, the F-Type Coupé makes no sense at all. The boot is filled with the

spare tyre, fuel consumption is ordinary at about 13L/100km around town, and there is nothing behind the front seats except a storage bin for your yacht keys and golf balls. It costs $131,800 drive away, which for a noisy, hard-riding, attention-seeking and rather thirsty two-seater, would seem excessive. As an investment in your happiness though, it’s the ultimate indulgence. l August / September 2015 Horizons 49

Lexus NX 300h
N
owadays, a luxury car-maker without a small-sized SUV in its range isn’t really in
the hunt. With the success of the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and, more recently, the Mercedes GLA, Lexus has had plenty of reasons to expand its SUV offerings. The Lexus NX range is actually based on the previous generation Toyota RAV4 platform, but there are some big differences in the way the NX 300h makes its wheels turn. Most significantly, the NX 300h has a hybrid power train, with the front wheels driven by a 2.5-litre petrol engine and electric motor combination. This is similar to the system in the Toyota Camry Hybrid.
However, if you opt for the all-wheel drive version, the rear wheels will be driven by a separate, dedicated electric motor on the rear axle. The battery is just ahead of the rear wheels. Lexus calls the system E-Four, which varies torque distribution to the rear wheels, depending on driving dynamics and road conditions. A similar system has been used in Lexus’s larger SUV, the RX range, but this is the first time we’ve seen such a system in a Lexus this size. As a whole, it works well and power delivery is smooth and amazingly quiet. This also points to the core character of the NX 300h. The interior of the NX 300h is so beautifully put together,
Lexus NX 300h specifications Price (as tested) Engine Power Torque Claimed fuel economy CO 2 emissions ANCAP safety rating
it looks and feels like it’s been grown rather than built. It seems sharp and sporty on the outside, but it’s not really. The NX prioritises cosseting luxury over pointy handling but that will make sense to many buyers in this price segment. The mouse pad, which controls the audio, sat nav and other functions, was fiddly and irritating to use initially, but we got used to it.

Safety equipment in the NX is extensive, and includes a reversing camera as standard across the range, and eight airbags, including knee airbags for the driver and passenger. The NX 300h is available in four different model grades, ranging from the 2WD Luxury at $61,767 drive away, through to the top-spec AWD Sports Luxury at $83,758. l

Tesla Model S P85+
T
he Tesla Model S is the vehicle that will alter people’s perceptions of electric cars from pricey curiosities to practical and desirable alternatives to their conventional competitors. Key to the Tesla’s appeal is its range of around 500km, which is close to that of the conventionally powered luxury saloons it competes with, such as the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Its pricing is in line with its rivals, with the entry-level Model S 60 listed at $96,200 plus on roads, ranging up to $133,260 for the more powerful P85+. As a vehicle that attracts the luxury car tax, drive away pricing will be more than $150,000 for the range-topping model. Even then, the whole concept
of the Tesla means it’s running a different race. For example, in late January, Tesla owners worldwide awoke to find their cars had received a performance upgrade via a software update that had been automatically downloaded while their owners slept. The battery is located along the floorplan of the vehicle, and is approximately 10cm thick, keeping the centre of gravity low. There’s a huge boot, plus a generous trunk in the front, too. Tesla folk call that the ‘frunk’. There are a few things missing, though. The door trim materials utilise quite hard plastic, and there are no door pockets either. Thanks to a joint venture with Mercedes-Benz, the indicator

stalk and gear shifter come from Mercedes-Benz cars, which look a little old-school. We had the opportunity to drive more than 250km in a Model S P85+ between Sydney and its northern outskirts. This Model S had an 85kWh bank of batteries powering an electric motor that sends 310kW and 600Nm to the rear wheels. At the beginning of our journey, we had more than
$151,000 (approx) Single electric motor 310kW 600Nm 0 L/100km 0 Not rated
430km of charge in the battery and no concern that we were going to run out. It was worry-free travel in a highly attractive car with no tailpipe emissions. It also happened to be a very capable driver’s car. Even more impressive, and slightly unnerving, is that all that exuberant performance is delivered in almost complete silence. l August / September 2015 Horizons 51

What’s new Baby boom The first five months of 2015 saw a rush of new baby SUVs launched into the Australian market, including the Mazda CX-3, Renault Captur, the updated Nissan Juke and the Honda HR-V, which is reviewed in this issue. In WA, small SUVs were the fastest growing light-vehicle market segment, up 12.4 per cent in a market that overall was down 8.6 per cent compared to the January-May period of 2014 overall. Sales of small, medium and large cars, people movers, large SUVs and sports cars were all down, with medium SUVs and light cars the only other growth segments.
The latest news from the motoring world Toyota, Mazda team up In a further move towards automotive homogeneity, Toyota and Mazda have formed a partnership designed to help both manufacturers benefit from each other’s technological strengths. Both companies have said they value each other’s attitudes to their histories, while also embracing the future and looking forward. Of particular interest to Toyota is Mazda’s Skyactiv engine technology, while Mazda values Toyota’s focus on global environmental responsibility.
20 years of ESC This year marks the 20th anniversary of the introduction of electronic stability control, the most important vehicle safety technology since the introduction of the seatbelt. ESC, as it is known generically, was first introduced with the name electronic stability program (ESP) by MercedesBenz on its 1995 S 600 coupé. Later, in 1995, ESC was added to the S-Class saloon and the SL Roadster. Nowadays, it is mandatory for every new
Sandman returns
passenger vehicle sold in Australia to be equipped with the life-saving technology. ESC laws for light commercial vehicles begin in November 2015.
Holden have brought back the Sandman, albeit toned down from the original. From June, Holden began offering a small number of special edition Sandman Commodore utes and station wagons. Unfortunately, the station wagon is the closest we’ll get to the classic panel van of the 1970s, but the ute is a little more in keeping with its original counterpart. The modern Sandman is based on the Commodore SV6 and SS-V. Sandman additions include a modern take on the original Sandman livery and, for the wagon, there’s an orange shagpile floor rug available as an accessory. August / September 2015 Horizons 53

Our experts answer your questions
You can be a winner Oils ain’t oils
Q
What’s the difference between synthetic oil and normal oil and why would you use either? Gail Baker, Bateman
A: Synthetic oil is generally
preferable to mineral oils for modern vehicles. It operates better at lower temperatures because the lower viscosity of synthetic oil means it is able to flow and lubricate the engine at cold starts more easily. Furthermore, at high operating temperatures, the molecules in synthetic oil do not break down as easily, thus protecting the engine from excessive wear over time. However, manufacturers specify the most appropriate oil to use in their vehicles to ensure consumers get the best out of the vehicle. Using different oil from the manufacturer’s specification can be detrimental to the vehicle’s fuel consumption and/or its engine’s life.
Battery warning
Q
My car’s battery has a two-year warranty, but I’m very happy that it has lasted almost four years so far. Are there any warning signs to indicate that the battery might fail soon? Are battery checks that are done during servicing reasonable indicators?
Kathleen Chindarsi, Bassendean
A:
It is common for drivers not to notice the warning signs of a failing battery, as they can be subtle. Among the signals are the engine being a little slower to start, a slight clicking just before the engine starts, or fading dashboard lights. It is important to note that these symptoms may also indicate a faulty alternator. The best way to check if it is the battery at fault is to have a technician test it with a battery multimeter. A regular daily run for the car is not always sufficient to fully charge the battery, particularly if it has previously been run flat and not properly recharged. Also, vehicle battery checks during a service can be a reasonable indicator of whether a battery may need changing in the near future.
Clean screen
Q
The inside of my windscreen seems to accumulate residue that can make it very hard to see when driving into direct sunlight. My solution is to clean the screen using elbow grease and a microfibre cloth. Are there any better solutions or products that can help?
Daniel, East Perth
A:
There could be a number of causes of this residue. Sometimes it is due to protectants used on the dashboard to make it shiny and keep it from cracking. When the vehicle is parked in the sun, some of the protectant evaporates onto the inside of the windscreen. Using a piece of scrunched newspaper and window cleaner can be an effective cleaning method. Alternatively, the residue may also be caused by a faulty air-conditioner unit leaking gas. The gas looks like frost or icicles around the vent areas. If this occurs the window may need to be restored or replaced, depending on the amount of damage, and of course, the air conditioner will need attention, too.

Cameras keep a wider eye on crime
Breakdown safety Each year more than 400,000 Western Australians call RAC for roadside assistance. As most breakdowns are unexpected, you may find yourself in a dangerous situation such as at the side of a freeway, on a bridge, or in the middle of a junction. If you do experience a breakdown on a high-speed road, follow these safety tips: l Find a safe place to pull over, such as an emergencybreakdown lane. l Always activate your hazard lights and, if lighting is poor, also activate your parking lights. l Call RAC Roadside Assistance (13 11 11) on your mobile phone or use a roadside emergency phone. l If it is not safe to exit the vehicle, remain in the vehicle with your seat belt on.
l Exit
your vehicle from the side furthest from the traffic and always check for traffic first. Close your vehicle door on exit and stand clear of the road. Many of the dangerous conditions RAC roadside patrols experience are caused by passing motorists being inattentive or not adapting their driving to the conditions. When approaching a breakdown or roadside emergency, adjust your speed as you pass and move over safely, away from the breakdown area.
Closed circuit television (CCTV) has become a powerful crime-prevention tool enabling positive identification of criminals and often a clear record of their crimes. The wide uptake of CCTV systems by individuals, businesses and government agencies has created the opportunity for a database of systems that can be accessed to provide even greater protection for our community. The state government’s CCTV strategy outlines how existing private and public CCTV systems can be harnessed and networked to enable wider surveillance of crime hot-spots. As well as live feeds from organisations, the new strategy will enable individuals to register their residential CCTV systems and, when requested, to provide footage recorded by their cameras. The new state CCTV strategy will replace the current CCTV register, named Blue Iris, and enable more efficient access to better data. To find out more about the strategy visit police.wa.gov.au. For more information about the benefits of CCTV in and around your home, call RAC Security on 1300 132 735 or visit rac.com.au/security.
To keep your family safe in a breakdown, find out more about the different levels of RAC Roadside Assistance cover. Visit rac.com.au/roadside. August / September 2015 Horizons 57

Keeping a grip on the road With winter coming to an end, it’s a good time to check the condition of your tyres to see if they need to be replaced.
Common reasons your ‘check engine’ light is on It’s always a concern when your car’s engine light comes on unexpectedly. Here are some common reasons why it may come on: l Replace
your vehicle’s oxygen sensor(s) – This sensor determines the level of oxygen in the exhaust to assist the engine to run at maximum efficiency.
l Replace
catalytic converter(s) with new OE catalytic converter(s) – this warning is usually seen in older vehicles that have not kept up with regular servicing.
l Inspect for loose fuel cap and
tighten or replace as necessary – Even a loose fuel cap can trigger the engine light. If this is the case, the fuel cap may need to be tightened or replaced. l Replace
ignition coil(s) and spark plug(s) – these two
problems go hand in hand. If a problem occurs with the ignition coil, this can then have an effect on the spark plugs. l Replace
thermostat – this can be a common problem in high heat regions as the thermostat is a hard-working component within a car’s engine.
Tread depth has a significant effect on your car’s braking ability. At 3mm of tread, your tyres are 80 per cent worn, which can have a significant impact on braking and handling. To get the most out of your tyres, make sure they have enough tread (grip). The tread depth of a new tyre is typically 8mm. The Australian legal minimum is 1.6mm, however we recommend changing your tyres when the depth reaches 3mm. Make sure your tyres are properly inflated to ensure maximum contact with the road. This also helps extend the life of your tyres by avoiding uneven wear. Check the inside edge of your car’s door or the manufacturer’s guide book to confirm the specific requirements for your tyres. On average, you should change your tyres every 40,000 to 60,000km, depending on the rubber compound in the tyre and your driving style. RAC members can now buy a range of quality tyres and book a tyre fitting online. Tyres are also available for fitting at selected RAC Auto Service centres. To purchase tyres or to book your car for a tyre fitting, call 1300 651 042 or visit tyres.rac.com.au.
If a car engine warning light does appear, call RAC Roadside Assistance on 13 11 11, or make a booking for a free 30 minute fault diagnosis at one of our nine metropolitan Auto Service centres. For more information about RAC’s free fault diagnosis call 1300 134 642.

Spectacular stargazing
Roebuck Bay Broome’s Staircase to the Moon appears each month from March to October. As the Moon rises, the reflection of its light on the tidal flats is a spectacular sight.
The Wheatbelt Dark-night stargazing in the Wheatbelt region is within a two-hour drive of Perth. Here you’ll be able to view an incredible blanket of brilliant stars. On a moonless night you can see the Milky Way Galaxy stretch right across the night sky.
Perth Hills Make your way to the Perth Hills to find some protection from the glow of the city lights. The volunteer guides at Perth Observatory in Bickley run stargazing nights for public visitors, where you can learn more about astronomy.
Albany and Esperance If you’re stargazing along this part of the southern coast you may be lucky enough to witness the Aurora Australis - the colourful display of red and green lights also known as the Southern Lights. It’s a very rare site in WA and when it does occur, is usually only ever seen from the south.
Wooleen Station Wooleen Station in the Murchison region is an aweinspiring destination with views of the Milky Way Galaxy so close it feels like you could touch it. As a remote location, there is very little light pollution but the station has plenty of accommodation options so you can enjoy your remote stargazing in comfort.
The Pinnacles Take the Indian Ocean Drive to Nambung National Park and experience stargazing
among the Pinnacles. Budding astrophotographers can take some interesting images of the Milky Way Galaxy arching above the limestone structures. Under moonlight, the shapes of the Pinnacles cast wonderful shadows.
Wave Rock Head to Wave Rock near Hyden and on a dark night you’ll be amazed at how many stars you can see directly above you all the way to the horizon in each direction. The dark sky and shimmering stars look stunning against the backdrop of this iconic WA landmark.
Gingin While Gingin isn’t too far from Perth, it’s just far enough from the bright city lights to ensure the starlit skies here are a spectacular sight. At the nearby Gingin Observatory
view the stars through telescopes and find out more about the constellations.
Dryandra Country Two hours south-east of Perth in Dryandra Country there are some great camp and cabin sites that are ideal spots for seeing meteor showers or shooting stars. The Geminid Meteor Shower in midDecember each year is best seen in the early hours of the morning. This region includes Narrogin, Wickepin, Pingelly and Cuballing.
Lake Ballard The stars over the Gormley sculptures on the dry lakebed at Lake Ballard in the Golden Outback will take your breath away. Under the star-filled sky, the 51 steel sculptures stand out against the stark white salt plain. Stargazing tips and sites provided by the Stargazers Club WA.
