Planning for driverless cars: why we can’t take a back seat Having a discussion about vehicles driving in ‘nodes’ in a connected network, communicating with each other and roadside infrastructure, as well as using satellites and driving themselves, has the potential to raise eyebrows. Driverless vehicles may seem like a radical shift to some, and the biggest disruption to the conventional car to ever occur, but one thing is certain – the technology is on its way so it’s not a matter of ‘if’ but ‘when’. The US has just issued the first licences for driverless vehicles and Nevada, Florida and California have already passed laws allowing the testing of fully autonomous or driverless vehicles on public roads, while Britain is currently choosing a city in which to trial them. South Australia has also commenced the debate around driverless vehicles and what is required to accommodate them on their roads. So what is Western Australia doing? In order to ensure the introduction of driverless vehicles and the infrastructure required to accommodate them is fully considered, we need to start exploring a number of policy, regulatory and technological requirements. Building effective relationships across all levels of government, vehicle manufacturers, technology and information suppliers and relevant stakeholders will be critical to having an informed conversation about the infrastructure our state needs for the future. RAC believes that as a state we must ensure the expansion of the road network is balanced against the need to make better use of the infrastructure we already have, and of new and emerging technology solutions, in concert with better
co-ordinated traffic management and road works planning. Intelligent Transport Systems is a collective term covering many aspects of advanced transport management, but unlocking its potential provides us with real opportunities to help reduce congestion, improve mobility, save lives and stop serious injuries, and ensure our existing and future transport networks work harder, smarter and are more integrated. We are taking our first steps with Managed Freeways, which could make a significant difference to reliability, safety and the journey experience for travellers. Making better use of technology to manage traffic signals is also expected to have significant benefits for road users. In-car technology, where it relates to changing or mitigating the effects of road user behaviours, will play a key role in reducing road trauma and congestion. Our cars are already making decisions for us, with an ever-expanding set of crash avoidance technologies present in many modern vehicles. Driverless vehicles are on their way. We need to start planning and considering the future now, so that communication networks and supporting infrastructure are in place to embrace new transport technology, and unlock its potential benefits. l

to think the speed limit is between 115km/h and 125km/h. Worse still, when I am towing a trailer and supposed to be driving at 100km/h I am passed by other cars pulling trailers and boats. We are the biggest state in Australia and the police can’t cover all of it. In my opinion we need a combination of driver education and a more integrated holistic approach, similar to Victoria’s. P. Robinson, Bunbury
Still following dad’s advice
Inspired to explore WA I have only lived in WA for five years and unfortunately haven’t had much chance to see this beautiful state. After reading the article published in your December/ January issue about Bremer Bay I decided it was time to explore. My first stop was Albany for a few days as I wanted to visit the new National Anzac Centre. I spent several hours at the centre as there was so much to see and do. I found it to be unbelievably [good] and would recommend it as a ‘must see’ when visiting Albany. The technology was brilliant. After Albany I headed for Bremer Bay. The township itself is small, the general store providing everything from groceries to fuel and lots of other supplies. The beaches are wonderful with white sand
and clear water. You can even drive onto the beachfront in certain areas. Reef Beach was my favourite beach but you can only get to it by four-wheel drive. The track is narrow and rough but worth the visit. Thank you to Horizons - your magazine allowed me to have a splendid holiday. Marlene Harris, Thornlie
Everyone’s in a rush In response to your article Slow road to safety in the April/May issue of Horizons, there is a lack of courtesy among WA drivers that is one of the causes of the everincreasing road rage problem. One of the biggest road safety problems is speeding. When I’m not towing a trailer and I’m driving at 110km/h I often get passed by a steady stream of traffic that seems
I have 20 years’ worth of driving experience as well as another four or five years driving on the farm where I grew up. The drive from the farm to town was approximately 22km. Half of it was gravel and the other half a single lane of bitumen. When you met a car travelling in the opposite direction you had to drive with half the car on the road and the other half on the shoulder so as to avoid each other. One piece of advice my dad gave to me has stuck with me. He said “you must drive to the road conditions”.
Our winning letter
When you do a lot of country driving, you are forever changing the way you drive as conditions are always changing from gravel roads – recently graded or ungraded for 12 months – to narrow roads, sharp corners, crests, dust and the varied speed limits going from 40-110km/h. These need to be assessed as you drive. So, next time you are out there, ask yourself this: “Am I driving to the road conditions?” Graeme Weatherhead, Casuarina
Path to improvement I am 71 years old and recently received a Defensive Driving course (from RAC DTEC) from my family. Having completed the course, my overall comment is that everyone should do it because all drivers can be better drivers and this theoretical and practical course can help us improve. Thank you to the very experienced, patient and professional instructors who made it an enjoyable, worthwhile day. S. Jan Beauchamp, Ellenbrook

110 years of RAC Part 3 – 1946 to 1965
As we continue to mark the RAC’s 110th anniversary, Horizons presents the third in a series of RAC milestones. In this issue we look back at 1946 to 1965, a period of great growth for both the state and the RAC.
1946
1947
1949
An RAC road safety initiative is realised with the formation of the National Road Safety Council of Western Australia, made up of representatives from RAC, government, police and education departments.
As the volume of cars on Perth roads continues to grow, the RAC calls for a central body to control the city’s traffic.
The club begins replacing the motorcycle and side-car combinations used by patrols with Austin A40 vans. The vans are seen as providing greater protection to patrols.
1954 RAC purchases a property in Albany to house Roy Bailey, the region’s patrol.
1960 The RAC Touring Department appoints a draftsman to produce maps detailing 10 of the state’s key tourist areas. RAC Travel opens as a full time travel agency for members.
1956
1955 To commemorate RAC’s Golden Jubilee year, a new two-storey building is opened at 228 Adelaide Terrace, Perth.
After lobbying for a single controlling body to manage the state’s expanding road network, the club welcomes the establishment of the Main Roads Department.
1957 Metropolitan road service patrols are fitted with two-way radios and the roadside service is extended to 24-hours a day.
1965
1962 Perth hosts the Commonwealth Games and RAC provides complimentary insurance on the fleet of vehicles used during the games. The club also initiates an ambitious scheme to provide roadside services along the Eyre Highway for motorists driving to Perth for the games.
1962 RAC begins offering vehicle loans, a service which proves very popular with members.
1964
The RAC joins with the National Safety Council of WA to approach the government about issuing special driver training permits to students at the age of 16, with the training to take place in dedicated off-road training grounds.
After negotiations with oil companies and the government, the RAC agrees to operate an emergency service station on Hill Street, Perth. It operates daily from midnight to 7am to cover the hours when rostered service stations are closed.

Young crash victims tell their story
Image Danemo (Dreamstime.com)
Tayla and Konnah are Western Australians who, at 15 years of age, both became wheelchair bound after suffering serious spinal cord injuries as a result of car and motorcycle crashes. Tayla, a paraplegic, and Konnah, who was left a C4 quadraplegic, share their stories in a new documentary produced by the Paraplegic Benefit Fund (PBF) for their Prevention Youth program targeted at high school students across WA. RAC has contributed $17,725 to the production of the documentary through the RAC Community Sponsorships program to help raise awareness of youth road-safety issues. To register your interest in the PBF Prevention Youth program, contact the Paraplegic Benefit Fund on 9388 3366 or info@pbf.asn.au.
In-car breath test devices for repeat drink drivers
For anyone touring WA by road, planning short rest stops along the way is an important part of overall trip planning. To ensure drivers know exactly where to pull over for a break on their journey, Main Roads WA has produced a guide that details Main Roads rest areas in Western Australia.
Western Australia’s new alcohol interlock law will see interlock devices installed in the vehicles of repeat drink drivers and drivers found with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.15 and above. An interlock is an alcohol breath-testing device that prevents a vehicle from starting if the driver is over a specified BAC. RAC General Manager Corporate Affairs Will Golsby said an alcohol interlock program for WA has been on the agenda since 2003. “In 2013, alcohol, along with speed and drugs, accounted for 41 per cent of deaths on our roads,” Mr Golsby said. “Many Australian states and territories have been using the alcohol devices for a number of years with some positive results.” According to an RAC survey, more than nine in 10 RAC members said they felt drink driving was an issue of high priority in WA and 62 per cent believed the current penalties for drink driving were not severe enough. “Alcohol interlocks are a good measure to alter behaviour while they are fitted, but we’d like to see an additional strategy for long-term behaviour change that looks at intervention, education and rehabilitation for repeat drink drivers. “These programs can specifically deal with addressing repeat offenders’ drink-driving behaviours to help prevent them reoffending once the interlock has been removed. “Our member survey showed 92 per cent of respondents indicated support for compulsory driver education programs for repeat drink drivers.”
A rest area provides drivers with a safe place to stop for a break and also offers additional facilities that may not be available at shortterm parking spots or information bays. The guide contains maps of rest areas along 17 major routes across WA, the amenities available at each and the distances between rest stops. For your copy, email Main Roads WA at enquiries@mainroads. wa.gov.au. June / July 2015 Horizons 13

A lifetime of loyalty and support
Making better travel choices In 2012, RAC forecast another one million vehicles on WA roads by 2020. As Perth continues to grow, choosing alternative ways of moving around our community can help decrease traffic congestion and the negative impact it has on quality of life and economic productivity. RAC is promoting and actively using travel plans as one strategy to encourage a shift from single-occupancy car trips towards alternative transport options. A travel plan is a package of measures to promote and improve viable alternatives to single-occupancy car travel. In 2012, RAC launched its own Workplace Travel Plan to reduce its impact on congestion and CO2 emissions and improve the health and financial wellbeing of staff. Measures have included a
dedicated TravelSmart intranet page, guides that promote alternative travel options to staff and visitors, an electric pool bike scheme, car-pooling database and staff discounts for cycling stores. A 2014 RAC staff travel survey revealed a decrease in singleoccupancy car trips by staff at its two major sites, and targets for increasing walking and cycling at the RAC West Perth building have been achieved. RAC is also promoting the benefits of travel plans to local property developers and other organisations. Developers have already incorporated travel plans into planning for residential developments. Making walking, cycling and public transport a more regular part of your travel can be a great way to increase physical activity, as well as having wider community benefits.
Past President honoured with OAM
It was a celebration of milestones at RAC’s Gold Life morning tea held earlier this year in the Grand Ballroom at Crown Perth. The event celebrated the loyalty and support of those members who last year reached 50 consecutive years of membership with RAC – our Gold Life members. This year it was also a celebration of RAC’s 110 years of service in WA. RAC President Esme Bowen highlighted some of the organisation’s landmark achievements over the past 110 years, while RAC Executive General Manager Pat Walker gave guests an insight into the club’s current advocacy work and the inroads that have been made into creating safer, more sustainable and accessible ways to move around our state. The event was also attended by RAC’s longest-serving member, Kitch Pugsley, who has held RAC membership continuously for 82 years since 1933. All Gold Life members are entitled to free RAC Roadside Assistance for life. In addition, regional Gold Life members received a commemorative 50-year RAC notebook and pin in recognition of their ongoing membership.
RAC’s longest serving member Kitch Pugsley with RAC President Esme Bowen.
Giving back is in our DNA at RAC, and former RAC President Rod Evans epitomises this. We are very proud Rod recently was awarded an Order of Australia Medal for his contribution to the Western Australian community over 50 years. From 1972-2007, Rod was an RAC Councillor and served a term as President from 1977-79. Known as a “statesman”, Rod has been a member of various Government Advisory Committees and community organisations including Rotary, Surf Life Saving Association of WA, Association for the Blind, Vice Patron of the St John Ambulance Association and Curtin University. For almost 25 years, Rod has also contributed strongly to the business community as the Chairman and Managing Partner of accounting firm Hall Chadwick. Congratulations to Rod on this well-deserved award. left: RAC Group CEO Terry Agnew, OAM Rod Evans and RAC President Esme Bowen at Government House.

RAC cycling survey RAC’s 2015 WA Cycling Survey found half of all respondents felt either moderately or extremely unsafe when sharing the road with vehicles. The survey received more than 5,500 responses, highlighting the importance of cycling to the community, as well as exposing some significant barriers in ensuring it can reach its full potential as a safe and convenient mode of transport. RAC General Manager Corporate Affairs Will Golsby said the survey shows investment in cycling infrastructure, both on and off road, is viewed as the most important area for the WA Government to place priority on by far to help encourage more people to cycle. OTHER RESULTS:

think the state government should prioritise building on / improving the on-road cycle network (this ranked first based on respondents’ top three priorities)
“Funding for cycling has failed to keep pace with the state’s rapid growth and in 2012 RAC released research that showed $388 million was needed to build world-class cycle networks in WA over the next 10 years”, Mr Golsby said. “This funding is required urgently because it has been almost 19 years since the first Perth Bicycle Network Plan was released, and today WA’s cycling infrastructure remains piecemeal. “RAC supports cycling as an important and alternative mode of transport to help tackle congestion, improve the health and wellbeing of cities and towns, and to help reduce vehicle emissions. The future is bright for cycling but now is the time to deliver.”

he distance electric vehicles can travel in WA is about to jump exponentially with the opening of Australia’s first electric highway this year. The RAC Electric Highway® will consist of a series of fast electric vehicle charging stations placed strategically en-route between Perth and Augusta. The plan for the highway includes drivers being able to recharge their batteries at fast charging stations initially located at Fremantle, Mandurah, Harvey, Bunbury, Busselton, Dunsborough, Margaret River, Augusta, Donnybrook, Nannup and Bridgetown. RAC is funding the highway as part of its commitment to promoting more sustainable motoring and encouraging electric vehicle (EV) uptake. The charging stations will be funded by RAC but will be owned and maintained by local councils.
Recharging stations will offer Perth’s EV owners more opportunities to explore the South West.
EVs usually take a few hours to recharge using a standard AC charging system, but the electric highway stations will recharge a battery to 80 per cent in less than half an hour. The charging stations will be located in areas that will also give those travelling through the South West the chance to enjoy what the local community has to offer. RAC Executive General Manager Pat Walker says any costs for charging will be determined by local governments. Plans for the Electric Highway® followed a two-year trial of electric fleet vehicles in WA, which recommended increasing the availability of charging infrastructure to encourage electric car uptake. “The Electric Highway® idea initially came from a local committee that proposed 35 fast-charging stations for EVs in the South West. RAC has worked to bring the idea of an Electric Highway® running from Perth to

Augusta off the drawing board and into reality,” Mr Walker says. The charging stations would be spaced to lessen “range anxiety” – a term that refers to a driver’s fear of running out of power. Most EVs have a range of between 100km and 180km before they need to recharge. “The RAC Electric Highway® is a significant investment but the RAC believes it will foster electric vehicle uptake,” Mr Walker says. He says the RAC has a long history of landmark work and initiatives that have enabled Western Australians to move more safely and efficiently around their state. “As our organisation celebrates its 110th anniversary, the RAC saw the Electric Highway® as aligning very closely with our history of meeting our members’ needs, often through innovative and forwardthinking initiatives. 110 years ago people believed cars would never replace the horse and cart – cars were too expensive and access to fuel stations across the state was an issue. The situation is the same today for electric vehicles. “The RAC Electric Highway® fits very well with our history and our advocacy agenda because we are aiming to open up the state to electric vehicles while also focusing on safe, sustainable and accessible travel. We are also aiming to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from cars in WA as part of that.” The charging stations will be stand-alone facilities and will look like petrol bowsers. They will be about two metres high and will have three cables, two for fast DC charging to fit different sockets and one AC cable which can charge a Tesla at the same time. The first are expected to be operating by the end of June. Mr Walker says fast-charging stations were more commonplace in Europe and in some areas of
the world are co-located with petrol stations. “They have worked very well overseas,” he says. “The WA charging stations will be centrally located in each chosen local government area to encourage people to stop and have a coffee or a rest.” EVs work by using an electric motor powered by a series of batteries to run the vehicle. They look like conventional cars but drive silently. There are nearly 50 production EVs registered in WA and a further 78 converted electric vehicles. Fully electric vehicles sold in WA include the Tesla Model S, Nissan LEAF and the BMW i3. Prices start at around $16,000 for a secondhand EV and rise to more than $180,000 for a Tesla with all the bells and whistles. Chair of the WA branch of the Australian Electric Vehicle Association Chris Jones says the electric highway would help encourage EV uptake in WA.

“Instead of having two cars, one for long distance and one for around town, you can have one that does both. That’s the real benefit from the Electric Highway®. “It will help change electric vehicles from a curiosity to an option,” he says. “One charging station extends the range of every electric car in town by another 100kms. Electric cars have been around for a long time. Now, with improved battery technology they are lighter, more powerful and quicker to charge.” Mr Jones says the uptake of EVs had been greater in Europe and the US where subsidies encourage purchase. Electric car enthusiast Tanyia Maxted says she is excited by the prospect of the Electric Highway® and it will mean that her family could take their Nissan LEAF on holidays down south.
“To be able to charge in half an hour will make a real difference. It’s the sort of break you’d take to have a coffee. It will definitely open up electric cars to more people,” she says. The Maxted family has reduced their carbon footprint with an electric car and a 6KW solar system on the roof of their home that produces enough power to run two cars and the house. By charging the car in the middle of the day when rooftop solar cells are at peak production, she is able to reduce her demand for coal-fired power even further, reducing her emissions to close to zero. Ms Maxted says electric cars offered a new way of driving that was cleaner, calmer and more enjoyable. “When I sit in traffic and drive slowly I’m not thinking I’m wasting fuel, I’m thinking I’m saving charge.” l

The driverless future
Autonomous cars are no longer the stuff of science-fiction. Samantha Stevens profiles the technologies heading our way soon.
F
ully autonomous vehicles that navigate the streets – and each other – all while passengers are painlessly chauffeured around, may seem more fitting on the silver screen than on the streets of Perth. But the reality is autonomous car technology is already starting to make the leap from futuristic fantasy to our immediate future. We could see the end of speeding fines, the demise of the red light camera and an end to drink driving – the designated driver would be the car itself. In fact, someone born today may never even need a driver’s licence. Lessmobile individuals could maintain their independence and parents could be freed from the school or Saturday sport run forever. Motoring left (top to bottom): Autonomous cars seemed like fantasy back in the 1950s but today, fantasy has become our immediate future; sensors combined with GPS technology could eliminate not only blind spots and unforeseen obstacles, but also inch us closer to a zero-crash road environment.
The current crop
“These technologies have gone from being available only on luxury cars, to being available on relatively affordable ones such as the Mazda3. “On some vehicles, auto braking systems can also brake for pedestrians, animals and cyclists. Driving the Mercedes-Benz C250 BlueTEC (reviewed in this issue of Horizons), and seeing it automatically steer, stop and accelerate is absolutely astonishing. “While it still required a level of driver involvement, it was an exciting example of the autonomous vehicle technology that’s now on our doorstep, and a preview of what’s just around the corner.”
A safer path?
…the reality is autonomous car technology is already starting to make the leap from futuristic fantasy to our immediate future.
As autonomous cars use sensors combined with GPS technology to constantly monitor a full 360-degree view of their environment both near and far, they could eliminate not only blind spots and unforeseen obstacles, but also inch us closer to a zero-crash road environment. Vehicle autonomy has the potential to not only eliminate human error as a crash factor, but also the three biggest killers on our roads - speeding, drink and drug driving, and inattention. In fact, the only way for a crash to happen while in full autonomous mode would be via a hardware or software malfunction or the actions of a human-driven vehicle. There are understandable concerns about network malfunction or vulnerability to hacking. Any malfunction or cyber attack on a network of automated cars could potentially have serious consequences. And who is actually liable if there is a crash – surely not the ‘driver’ reading their paper in the back seat? Would insurance for accident coverage and property damage be needed for the individual, or for the manufacturers and software developers? The security of customer data, the software enabling the autonomy of the vehicle, and the network co-ordinating the driverless cars themselves would need to be secured and the information

Autonomous travel has existed for almost a century in the form of autopilot systems on planes and self-steering sailboats. Cars are a trickier proposition, but recent developments in this area have manufacturers claiming their special projects will become production vehicles in a matter of years. Google has been testing its autonomous vehicles in the US for several years now and its self-driving production car is expected to be released as early as 2017 – the same year that semiautonomous saloons from the likes of Volvo, Toyota and Audi are scheduled for the showroom. Closer to home, car sharing companies such as GoGet and Uber are investigating self-drive car sharing and, back in 2012, Rio Tinto introduced driverless vehicles to move mining materials in the Pilbara. Cars already on our roads have varying levels of autonomy, particularly in the active and passive safety systems that can literally take the wheel in the event of an impending crash. “Most people consider the idea of a car controlling itself to be unnerving and even unsafe, but most cars on our roads already have a low level of autonomous assistance capability,” says RAC’s Vehicles and Fuels Manager Alex Forrest. “Electronic stability control, for example, automatically applies the brakes to certain wheels of a vehicle when the system senses a loss of traction. This is all done without any intervention by the driver. Complex technology has been slowly fed into into our production vehicles as it is tested, developed and implemented, introducing the consumer slowly to the idea that the car taking control is ‘for our own good’”. “Technologies such as automatic emergency braking, radar cruise control and lane-keeping have been around for several years and offer low levels of autonomous functionality,” says Mr Forrest.
Motoring below (clockwise from left): The self-driving concept car F015 of car company Daimler at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, USA, 2015; Car sharing company GoGet are considering using selfdrive cars in the future; Rio Tinto is using driverless vehicles to move mining materials in the Pilbara.
stored correctly. Data collection is increasingly more common and customers should have certain assurances around private and personal information.
Less congestion Occupant safety isn’t the only way fully autonomous cars could serve us better than conventional vehicles – they also have the potential to reduce congestion. A queue of autonomous cars travelling in what’s referred to as a ‘platoon’ would be able to safely travel close together, creating more space on the road. Ideally this will be achieved in a situation where all vehicles are autonomous and all are connected via the appropriate infrastructure rather than operating as individual units. In such an interconnected road network each vehicle would be able to find the most efficient path to its destination.
The network For a car to operate in full autonomy – to navigate with no human intervention or interaction – a flawless communication network
Vehicle autonomy has the potential to not only eliminate human error … but also the three biggest killers on our roads – speeding, drink and drug driving, and inattention. and supporting infrastructure is needed. We have seen that a limiter of alternative power technology such as hydrogen fuel cells and electric cars has been a lack of infrastructure to service them. Implementing emerging technology so completely different from our current setup will take time, adequate funding, and a co-ordinated approach from all levels of government. “Vehicles are increasingly becoming more automated and may even be fully autonomous, but to support this, we need to start investigating how we can facilitate these systems, and eliminate the barriers,” says RAC’s Public Policy Adviser, Anna Sawyer.
Aussies willing to have a go Current research by the University of Michigan compared the public perception of automated vehicles in Australia, the UK and the US, and found that Australians were the least likely to know about the technology, but are the most positive about it.

The past vs the future Networks and infrastructure can be built, security tested and tightened, and technology developed and produced. But what will it all mean for the affection many of us hold for driving? There are many of us who aren’t about to give up on our weekend wheels, our classic treasures, or that trusty old steed we know and love. It’s difficult to imagine what the streets of Perth will look like in the next decade or so with more autonomous features in our cars. But in the future, we may be wondering how we ever managed to get around safely and efficiently without them. l

found that Australians were most likely to say they were interested in having this technology at 67 per cent compared with the US at 66 per cent and the UK at 63 per cent. “If we look back at the introduction of motorised vehicles in the early decades of last century we could say the rise of autonomous vehicle technology is another step in a long line of technological advancements,” says Ms Sawyer. “It’s an exciting transition, but there are obvious challenges that need to be addressed. A demonstration or trial would be a useful way to understand the impact of autonomous vehicles on our lives. There’s also a need to consider the viability of different options, such as a publicly available fleet of autonomous cars where users can jump in and out of

Road rules explained
Clear rules for motorists & pedestrians Pedestrians are one of our most vulnerable road user groups. Make sure you understand the rules that keep you and your family safe when you are out and about on foot, and the rules that protect pedestrians when you’re in the driver’s seat.
20m
For motorists
Vehicles entering or exiting a driveway must give way to any pedestrians on the footpath or verge.
At traffic lights, turning drivers are required by law to give way to pedestrians.
Unless stopping for pedestrians, a vehicle must not stop within 20m of the approach to a pedestrian crossing. This is to ensure the crossing is kept clear, with no cars parked or stopped within the 20m limit.

Share your views Walking can improve your health, reduce travel costs and vehicle emissions, as well as help tackle Perth’s growing traffic congestion. To share your views on walking in our towns and cities, look out for our upcoming Walking Survey.
For pedestrians
Pedestrians must use a pedestrian crossing, be it a signalised crossing or a crosswalk if they are within 20m of it.
Pedestrians must not begin crossing on a constant red or flashing red pedestrian light; you must wait for the next green pedestrian light.
Pedestrians must cross the road by the shortest safe route and not stay on the road longer than needed to cross safely. You should not cross an intersection diagonally unless it is specifically allowed at that intersection. June / July 2015 Horizons 31

MUST-DO TRAVEL EXPERIENCES
Looking for a reason to visit Myanmar? We can give you more than 2000 of them. In a 400-year temple-building spree, the rulers of Bagan in central Myanmar erected thousands of temples across the flat plains around the city. Earthquakes, war and neglect have taken their toll, but there are still more than 2000 to explore. Some are gigantic, others barely bigger than a pigeon coop, and many of them contain beautiful frescoes. Sign up for a hot air balloon ride to enjoy an unforgettable overview of this magnificent site.

Northern lights from Norway During the long, hard Norwegian winter, the sun rarely makes an appearance. By way of compensation, however, there are the northern lights: unearthly light trails of green, yellow, pink and violet strewn across the sky. Northern Norway is one of the best places on earth to see them: add in dog sledding and a stay in an ice hotel, and this winter holiday is looking pretty damn hot.

Visit a sacred Monastery in Bhutan
Step into a time warp in Cuba
Bhutan is full of spectacular Himalayan scenery, but it is hard to beat the jaw-dropping trek up to Taktsang, the Tiger’s Nest Monastery. Perched atop a sheer cliff face, its seven sky-scraping temples can only be reached with patience and perseverance. The switchbacking trail takes around two hours; from there, you need to climb a steep flight of stone stairs without handrails. Trust us: the hairraising climb is well worth it.
It is the Caribbean island where ‘50s Cadillacs still cruise the streets and salsa beats pour from every doorway. One of Cuba’s greatest charms is its sense of having been caught in a time warp. With the US starting to lift its embargo, change is in the air; go there now to enjoy the beautiful beaches and bays, the elegantly mildewed colonial cities, and the ever-present tropical rhythms, before life on the island changes dramatically.
5 Cruise the Douro River into Portugal For a river cruise without the crowds, skip the Rhine, the Rhone and the Danube and head south. Portugal’s Douro River is one of Europe’s best-kept secrets, winding through granite mountains and leafy vine-covered slopes. Highlights include tours of family-owned wineries, visits to walled towns, and the chance to explore the beautiful, World Heritage-listed city of Porto. June / July 2015 Horizons 33

8 Witness the Olympic Games in Rio No one throws a party like the Brazilians, so next year’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro is bound to be the party of the year. Hotels are already filling up, but one of the world’s largest cruise ships, the Norwegian Getaway – which takes almost 4000 passengers – will be anchored in the scenic harbour as a floating hotel.

Pearly white sand, gently lapped by water that shifts between turquoise, teal and aqua: it is not hard to see why the spectacular 7km-long Whitehaven Beach, on Queensland’s Whitsunday Island is so often named among the world’s best beaches. If a day trip just isn’t enough, a handful of camping sites are also available on the island.
Sail the Panama Canal The Panama Canal has been open for 101 years, and it remains one of the great engineering feats of all time. Cutting through a continent, the 77km canal connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific, and is a highlight of any Central American cruise. On many cruises, guest lecturers are on hand to give insights into the extraordinary stories behind its construction.

Get off the beaten path in Madagascar Madagascar is an island of oddities. There are 100 species of chameleon, giant hairy crabs weighing almost 2kg and, of course, those endearing lemurs. There are around 70 species of these strange creatures – furry and long-limbed with frighteningly human hands. Look for sporty lemurs swinging through the trees, tiny dwarf lemurs curled up asleep on a branch and the rare indri lemurs, known for their haunting song.

Words Lee Atkinson
The Wild West A road trip though the Gascoyne Murchison region uncovers a wealth of little-known natural wonders, writes Lee Atkinson.
A
sk an Aussie to name the world’s biggest ‘rock’ and chances are they’ll say Uluru (or Ayres Rock). Uluru may get all the glory as the world’s largest rock, or rock monolith, but in the heart of WA’s Gascoyne Murchison region is another ‘rock’ of grand proportions. It’s the world’s largest monocline – two-and-a-half times bigger than Uluru, a whopping 717m high and almost 8kms long.
Called Burringurrah, but also known as Mt Augustus, it’s one of Australia’s lesser-known natural wonders, and just one of many highlights in an area that usually flies beneath the tourist radar. Around two days’ drive from Perth, there are two ways to get to Mt Augustus, and both are great fun. You can take the coastal route and spear east at Carnarvon (make sure to stock up on fresh fruit and vegies from some of the many farms and orchards in the
area, watered by vast underwater aquifers) or if it’s wildflower season (late winter and spring) take the inland route via Dalwallinu, Morawa and Mullewa to see vast carpets of wildflowers and then continue north via the Carnarvon-Mullewa road to Wooleen Station. Established in 1886 as a sheep station, the quarter million acre property now runs cattle and offers accommodation in the National Trust-listed homestead and at four different campgrounds scattered

Fast facts Where is it? The Gascoyne Murchison region is approximately 1000km north-east of Perth. The main town in the region, Gascoyne Junction, is 174km east of Carnarvon. Allow at least a week to explore the region, plus travelling times to and from Perth.
Driving conditions Many of the roads in this region are unsealed. They are dusty but generally in reasonable condition although some river crossings may be tricky after rain. Although many of the major roads are accessible by twowheel drive, a four-wheel drive and an off-road caravan or camper trailer, if you are towing, is recommended if you really want to explore the area.
When to go Summer in the Gascoyne Murchison region can be hot and unpleasant. The best time to visit is during autumn and winter or in spring to see the wildflowers.
Places to stay Wooleen Station: stay in the historic homestead or take your pick from four different campgrounds, including four remote sites on the banks of the Murchison River. Showers are available at the homestead. wooleen.com.au. Murchison: the Murchison Oasis Roadhouse lives up to its name with a very pleasant grassy camping area that has powered caravan sites and basic cabins. 9961 3875. Kennedy Range National Park: enjoy spectacular views of the rocky range from your camp at the Temple Range Campground, which has toilets but no showers. parks.dpaw.wa.gov.au. Mt Augustus: no camping is allowed in the national park but there are powered caravan sites and basic cabins available at Mt Augustus Tourist Park, with great views of the rock. mtaugustustouristpark.com.
Don’t miss You’ll need to get up early, and it’s a bit of a steep scramble in sections, but watching the sunrise from the top of the escarpment in Kennedy Range National Park is a magical sight to behold. Allow two to three hours return, depending on your fitness, and take plenty of water.
around the property including on the banks of the Murchison River, where the sunsets have to be seen to be believed. The magnificent but once overgrazed property, which is slowly being restored back to an ecologically stable and productive landscape by the young leaseholders, Frances Jones and David Pollock (the couple have featured on ABC’s Australian Story three times since 2012), features heritage-listed wetlands teeming with birdlife, vast mulga scrub rangeland and 36km of the Murchison River. It is famous for its extensive wildflower displays in early spring, but there is enough to see and do here that you could easily spend a couple of days exploring the historic buildings and the self-drive, mountain bike and walking trails, whatever time of year you visit. Back on the road, fill up at the roadhouse in Murchison Settlement – it’s the only shire in the country that doesn’t have a town, and the fuel is some of the cheapest in the outback. Head north through the newly rebuilt town of Gascoyne Junction, which was devastated by floods in late 2010, and on to Kennedy Range National Park, but stop along the way at Bilung Pool between Murchison and Gascoyne Junction. Rarely dry, this picturesque waterhole on the Wooramel River is sacred to the local Wajarri people and tradition decrees that you throw a handful of sand into the pool to appease Gujida (the rainbow serpent) when you first arrive. It’s a lovely spot for a picnic. Another stunning natural wonder
that remains relatively ignored by many travellers is the sandstone plateau of the Kennedy Range. The range is between 12 and 25km wide, and about 75km long, and is riddled with dramatic gorges and fantastic rock formations. There are several walking trails that lead from the campground into the canyons, as well as a climb to the top of the range. At sunrise and sunset the rocky ramparts glow red in the soft light and it’s quite a sight to behold: a bonus is that you can watch the early morning light show from the comfort of your camp. Mt Augustus is 268km to the north, following, for the first part of the trip, the Lyons River. You’ll see the massive rock, which is estimated to be a mindboggling 1,750 million years old, long before you get there, and once you are there you can climb to the top and back in around six hours, or take the much easier option and drive around it – the road that encircles its base is 49km long, which gives you an idea of its colossal size. Like Uluru, it’s a deeply spiritual place and many of the rocky overhangs are covered with ancient engravings. The best place to see them – easily – is at Mundee, on the south side. It’s around 360km to the Great Northern Highway at Meekatharra, where you can head south to Perth, east to the Red Centre via the Gunbarrel Highway or north to Newman and Karijini National Park in the Pilbara. It doesn’t matter which way you go, every trip offers a new wild-west adventure. l

Wild about wildflowers The Gascoyne Murchison region is one of the state’s wildflower hot spots. During spring you’ll see lots of fluffy purple mulla mulla around Mt Augustus and vivid displays of native cornflower, flannel bush, everlastings, scarlet Sturt desert pea, vast swathes of golden billy buttons, mauve velleia, magenta parakeelya and blue pincushions in and around Murchison. There are also carpets of pink and white everlastings around Mt Magnet to the south. The Mt Magnet area is also renowned for its yellow pom poms, hakea and emu bush.
But it’s the wildflower displays at Wooleen Station that really steal the show, where, if there have been good winter rains, the sparse rangelands are blanketed in pink, yellow, white and mauve everlastings and pom poms as far as the eye can see. “We also have Sturt desert peas, mulla mulla, cornflowers and pink parakeelya,” says Wooleen Station’s Frances Jones. “As well as all the flowering shrubs and trees – emu bush, wattles and acacias, grevilleas, native hibiscus, bottlebrushes and eucalypts. It’s a pretty huge variety. “Our granite country is renowned for yellow bachelor

buttons,” she says. The granites are a culturally significant place for the local indigenous people, so the only way to see them is on one of Wooleen’s guided tours. See wooleen.com.au.

Words Justine Costigan
For Western Australians keen to cruise their home state’s spectacular coastline, there are more options than ever to choose from. And, as Justine Costigan discovered, it can be a fascinating (and luxurious) way to explore the coast.
Room with a
sea view
T
here is approximately 20,781kms of Western Australian coastline and exploring all of it by ship could take up to two weeks or more, depending on the number of stops on your itinerary and the size of your ship. While many passengers happily cruise for weeks or months, if you’re keen to see more of the state, a short voyage is a fine introduction to the vast possibilities of WA cruising. A segment of Diamond Princess’s first 33-night circumnavigation of Australia, our five-night journey between Adelaide and Fremantle included two-and-a-half days at sea and two full-day shore stops, offering a taste of the attractions of the southern coast and an all-too-
brief glimpse of life on board. It was a good time to experience the Diamond Princess. After 10 years in service, the ship underwent a $30 million refurbishment in early 2014. To the general upgrade, two new Japanese inspired spaces – a sushi bar and Japanese bathhouse – were added, a reflection of the fact that the ship spends half the year cruising in and around Japan and South-East Asia. Designed to give passengers a taste of Japanese culture and life, the result is a ship that still feels like it’s a part of the Princess family but has a subtle Japanese flavour. From Adelaide, the Diamond Princess spent two days at sea crossing the Great Australian Bight to reach Albany.
We needed these two days just to get our bearings – the ship has 10 levels, five pools, five main dining rooms and three specialty restaurants, plus a gym, spa, numerous bars and cafés, two theatres, an art gallery, a ninehole putting course and a casino. It’s both a little intimidating and exciting, but there’s certainly no shortage of activities to keep you busy if the lure of simply staring out to sea, counting stars at night or taking a leisurely walk around the deck has little appeal. Most cruise lines make a big fuss of their wine and food – offering specialty restaurants in addition to their standard dining rooms as well as carefully selected wine lists, guest chefs and cooking classes – and the Diamond Princess is no different. We find it impossible to resist the temptation to visit the ship’s new Japanese restaurant. Kai Sushi is a standout experience, with Japanese-born and trained chefs creating fresh sushi and sashimi to order in typical theatrical style. Two days at sea passed quickly with a visit to Izumi, the ship’s new Japanese bathhouse, an easy way

to spend an afternoon. Izumi is modelled on Japan’s upmarket onsen, the hot springs experience famous throughout the country, and is the largest Japanese bath area at sea. Resting in the open-air hydrotherapy pool, after an hour or so in the indoor baths and sauna, is a very pleasant experience. Our first stop after a calm and relaxing two days at sea is Albany, the beautiful harbour town that’s home to the recently opened National Anzac Centre. In late 1914, 41,000 Australians left the town for the European battlefields of the First World War on ships that sailed through the harbour. Leaving from that same harbour 100 years later, after several hours immersed in the town’s history, I doubt a single passenger who visited the centre that day would have watched Albany disappear from view without thinking about those men and women. After another night on the ship we arrived in Busselton. As there’s no port in the town, the Diamond Princess anchored in Geographe Bay and passengers were taken on small tender boats to shore.
We were welcomed by a school band, local dignitaries and a red carpet. A special reception to mark the first cruise ship to Busselton, it was clear the town was thrilled to have the opportunity to welcome passengers ashore. There are many options for exploration in Busselton and shore excursions can be as jam-packed or as relaxed as you wish. We opted for a full-day Margaret River tour that included a visit to Vasse Felix’s cellar door and restaurant, Thompson Estate and several local producers including Vasse Virgin, Gabriel Chocolate and Colonial Brewery – giving us both a taste of the region’s produce and its spectacular coastline. After only a few days on board, we formed a strong attachment to our stateroom, the staff and the sense of tranquility that comes from being pampered in this exclusive world at sea. After our introduction to exploring WA’s coast by ship, it’s clear why more and more Western Australians are choosing a cruise as a way to explore their state, Australia and the wider world beyond. l
Fast facts When to go The Diamond Princess is based in Australia throughout our summer season and cruises Japan and South East Asia in our winter.
What to pack Always pack a rain jacket and non-slip shoes for wet and windy weather, no matter what season you’re travelling in, and sturdy walking shoes if you plan to join any shore excursions. Don’t forget to pack cocktail attire so you can join in the fun on formal nights.
Don’t miss Including Albany on your cruise itinerary. The new National Anzac Centre’s thoughtful and informative exhibition won’t leave you unmoved.
Cruising WA Exploring Western Australia by sea is a unique way to see the state. It’s also a leisurely and thoroughly enjoyable starting point for journeys further afield to east coast Australia, the Pacific and South East Asia. WA itineraries may include segments on international cruises (subject to availability) or destination specific WA cruises. From Fremantle, head north to explore the Coral Coast or journey further to Broome. To the south, destinations include Busselton, Albany and Esperance. Kimberley cruise itineraries include WA-only voyages as well as Broome to Darwin, exploring remote and secluded destinations along the way. For more information on a range of voyages and destinations, visit cruiseclub.rac.com.au. To find out more about this cruise, call RAC Cruise Club on 1300 655 898 or call into an RAC Travel centre. Each year, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is contacted by more than 10,000 Australians who get into difficulties while travelling overseas, according to the department’s Smart Traveller website. Australian consular officials can offer assistance to travellers in emergency situations, however, all medical expenses incurred while in another country, including evacuation costs, must be covered by the traveller. Some overseas medical costs could potentially take a lifetime to repay and can reach hundreds of thousands of dollars depending on the situation and the country. Medical evacuations from the US cost an average of $75,000-$90,000, but can cost as much as $200,000. Even in South-East Asia, hospital stays can be as much as $800 a
day and evacuations from Bali to Australia can cost up to $60,000. Before you purchase a travel insurance policy, check it covers all activities you may take part in overseas and make sure it adequately covers medical expenses in every country you’ll be visiting. Not all policies cover adventure activities, such as skiing, diving and bungee jumping. Most travel insurance will cover you for insurable events that occur before you travel so it’s important to take out a policy as soon as possible after you’ve paid for your travel. While many policies offer similar features, they’re not all the same, so you should read the product disclosure statement before you commit to any policy.

Test drive Alex Forrest reviews the latest cars on our roads.
Falcon FG-X
I
n late 2014, Ford launched the last ever Falcon model, a nameplate that at one stage adorned Australia’s favourite family car. With Ford planning to cease its vehicle manufacturing operations in Australia in October 2016, the FG-X is the Falcon’s final sign-off after what will be 56 years in the Australian market. You can see where Ford has focused its attention in the development of this car. Obviously, the front and rear ends have been revised and inside, Ford has added the latest version of its SYNC infotainment control system. There has also been a focus on fuel efficiency, with Ford claiming efficiency gains for the 4.0-litre, six-cylinder Falcons
in both turbo and naturally aspirated versions (4 per cent and 9 per cent improvements, respectively). However the big news to come with the FG-X Falcon is the triumphant return of the XR8 sedan after a four-year hiatus. The FG-X XR8 is everything an enthusiast of big, rear-drive Australian cars could want. The throttle response of that 335kW supercharged V8 is instant and very sharp in its progression. This is refreshing in 2015, when so many new cars are hindered by lagging and dopey throttle electronics. However, a number of issues, which were present in the previous FG Falcon, weren’t fixed by the time this one went into production. For example, the driving
Ford Falcon FG-X XR8 specifications Price (as tested) Engine Power Torque Claimed fuel economy CO 2 emissions ANCAP safety rating
position is still too high. For anyone over 190cm tall, the steering wheel obscures the speedo even when the wheel is adjusted all the way up. Also, in 2015 a car priced at $58,800 drive away should have basic equipment such as automatic up-and-down windows in every door, and proximity keys. Advanced safety technologies, such as auto braking and blind spot monitoring, are also

missing, even as options. A reversing camera is standard though. We also had some reliability issues with our vehicle. Although a brute, the XR8 is also a reminder of just how good a front-engine, rear-drive sedan can be to drive. Its drivetrain and suspension are truly brilliant and as the last of the line, this is an instant classic. Enthusiasts wouldn’t have it any other way. l

Mercedes-Benz C250 BlueTEC
I
f you’re fortunate enough to be in the market for a new Mercedes-Benz, there’s a good chance this will be it. It’s the new C-Class, and it’s the most popular model in the Mercedes range. In 2014, Western Australians bought 561 C-Classes, a mixture of the old model and this new one. The new C-Class was launched in August 2014, just in time for the car to win two trophies in this country’s most prestigious new-car assessment program, Australia’s Best Cars. The C-Class most obviously sets a new standard with its interior, with both its build quality and exquisite design making the cabin a benchmark in its class. Beautifully wrought details, such as the speaker
grilles and seat-adjustment switches, add to the sense of occasion when you sit in it. It is these elements of luxury that make the C-Class feel much more expensive than its starting price of $68,000. At the time of writing, it was also one of the safest cars on the Australian market, carrying an ANCAP score of 36.46 out of 37 points and hence the maximum 5-star rating. The car we tested was the C250 BlueTEC, which costs $78,125 drive away. For the extra $10,000, you get a 2.1-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine, which in the official ADR test, uses just 4.5 litres per 100km. Opt for the $83,600 C300 BlueTEC Hybrid, and consumption goes down to

4.0 litres per 100km. Among the more interesting options is the Air Balance package, which gives owners the option of adding a specific fragrance to the car. The factory-provided scents include “Downtown Mood” and “Freeside Mood”. Alternatively, you can pour in a bottle of Brut 33, if that better suits your style. What is truly amazing though is the Distronic Plus system,

which is standard on the C250. Distronic has two functions called Steer Control and Stop & Go Pilot, which in some traffic situations can steer and adjust the vehicle’s speed autonomously. Of course, autonomous braking is also standard, as is fatigue monitoring. That was enough to provide an exciting glimpse of how fully autonomous cars will feel when they finally reach our roads. l June / July 2015 Horizons 47

mong Western Australian buyers, the Tiguan is Volkswagen’s third most popular vehicle after the Golf and the Amarok. It’s an important vehicle for the German car-making giant, which has a vested interest in keeping it appealing, especially in the cut-throat competition of the medium-sized SUV market. The Tiguan range is priced just above its key competitors, with the base model 118TSI about $1,500 more than its Mazda CX5, Honda CR-V and Ford Kuga equivalents. To strengthen the appeal of the Tiguan, Volkswagen updated the range and added a special equipment package called R-Line in October 2014. The idea of the R-Line range
is to provide an opportunity for customers to add some of the sporty look and feel of Volkswagen’s other performance models to more affordable and practical vehicles. So, the R-Line package is available as an option on specific models in the Golf, Golf Wagon, Beetle and Tiguan ranges. However, in the Tiguan and Touareg ranges there are also standalone R-Line models. In the Tiguan, on top of the extra equipment of the R-Line package, the separate Tiguan R-Line model also gets a higher output 155kW petrol engine, leather upholstery and sat-nav. It also gets VW’s Adaptive Chassis Control, which means adjustable dampers and variable steering weighting. At $45,990 drive away, the
Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line specifications Price (as tested) Engine Power Torque Claimed fuel economy CO 2 emissions ANCAP safety rating
Tiguan R-Line competes with the range-topping variants of the Mazda CX-5, Honda CR-V, Subaru Forester and others. As well as being as practical as any other Tiguan, the R-Line also has a strong element of sporting luxury, which the German manufacturers do so well. While the Tiguan R-Line is indeed $8,000 more than the next petrol Tiguan down the list, the extra gear the R-Line brings would

cost much more than this if they were added individually. Plus, there’s that gutsier 155kW engine. Really though, with the 130TDI now in the Tiguan ranks and boasting an extra 27kW and 60Nm over the old 103TDI, we’d go for this. If we were feeling brassy, we’d add the R-Line package, in which case we’d still be $2,500 in front compared to the standalone Tiguan R-Line. l

Mazda CX-5
I
f there’s one mid-size SUV that has set a new benchmark for the segment in recent years, there’s no doubt it would be the Mazda CX-5. Critically, the CX-5 proved SUV buyers no longer had to sacrifice good handling, excellent safety, reasonable affordability and driving fun when they went from a regular car to an SUV. Deservedly, at the end of 2014, the CX-5 was Australia’s most popular mid-sized SUV. However, the CX-5 was launched in February 2012 and, by its third birthday, was due for an update. In February, Mazda launched a freshened-up CX-5 that brought a smoother and quieter ride, an electric park brake,
a higher-quality interior and an updated front end. Externally, there’s a new front grille mesh and slightly different lights, but no major differences, and that’s a good thing given its looks didn’t need fixing in the first place. Under the skin is where the more important changes have been made. Mazda has added an electric parking brake to all variants in the CX-5 range, which gives better access to necessities like cup holders and other storage spots. Mazda has also improved the ride of the CX-5 by changing the structure for the front and rear dampers and the bushes in the front suspension arms. The new CX-5 is quieter than
Mazda CX-5 specifications Price (as tested) Engine Power Torque Claimed fuel economy CO 2 emissions ANCAP safety rating
the old one, thanks to improved sound insulation. The interior also gets new metal-finished buttons and knobs, which add to the overall quality feel. Engine and gearbox choices are exactly the same as in the superseded model. When pushed hard, the noise from the 2.5-litre petrol can get intrusive, but it has enough torque not to require that too often. The 2.5 is also much better

suited to this vehicle than the 2.0-litre petrol in the base model, which is breathless and buzzy. The 2.2-litre diesel is as highly capable as it’s always been. Pricing starts at $30,500 drive away for the Maxx 2.0-litre petrol manual, but the Maxx Sport petrol at $39,900 (diesel is another $3,500) is right in the sweet spot for value and driving pleasure. l June / July 2015 Horizons 49

What’s new
The latest news from the motoring world Audi’s ‘Virtual Cockpit’ On launching its sporty new TT in Western Australia in March, Audi introduced what it calls the Virtual Cockpit. It doesn’t mean the whole interior is an illusion, but it does mean there’s a large colour screen in front of the driver rather than the regular fixed analogue dials. The screen displays navigation, audio and the traditional speed and tachometer dials, with the driver able to alter their prominence. The system also does away with the centrally mounted display screen commonly seen on modern cars.
Jaguar’s love tap The Jaguar Land Rover group has been working on a car seat technology that ‘taps’ drivers on the shoulder to warn them against opening the vehicle’s door into the path of oncoming bicycles. The technology is called Bike Sense, and it includes a suite of functions designed to keep cyclists safe. Bike Sense can detect approaching bicycles on either side of the vehicle, and an air cushion inside the top of the car seat will extend to ‘tap’ the driver on the left or right shoulder. The technology can also make the interior door handle buzz and illuminate a matrix of LEDs inside the car as further warnings of approaching cyclists. Lexus fills SUV gap Until recently, there was one glaring omission in the Lexus range – a mid-sized SUV. Given virtually every popular luxury brand now has a mid-sized SUV in their range, Lexus simply couldn’t be without one, and now it isn’t. Lexus now has the NX 300h, which is an all-wheel drive petrol/ electric hybrid with the rear wheels driven solely by a dedicated electric motor.
This was followed by the NX 200t, which is purely petrol-powered. In a first for a Lexus engine, the 200t is also turbocharged.
60 years of the 300SLR This year marks the 60th anniversary of Stirling Moss’s and Denis Jenkinson’s legendary win in the gruelling 1,600km Mille Miglia race. It’s also been six decades since the devastating crash at the Le Mans 24 Hour race that killed 83 spectators when a vehicle flew into the crowd. Amazingly, both these separate events involved the same model car, the iconic Mercedes-Benz 300SLR. Though primitive in their safety equipment, only nine 300 SLRs were built and each of the remaining examples are now worth millions.

I kept taking them off and putting them on to make sure everything was actually sharper and not just my imagination. But I wasn't seeing things. The improvement was very striking. And very obvious. I then put on my $160 sunglasses to compare. They were dull, blurry and glarey - no comparison. I was really impressed. But why did these BLOK® sunglasses make such a big difference? I discovered there are two reasons ....
Firstly:
And most importantly, it’s how the sun’s blue rays affect the retina in your eyes. Your retina is like the film in old cameras, it captures images. And because blue rays are so short in the visible spectrum, they land just in front of your retina, not directly on it, as do other colours. This causes what scientists refer to as Chromatic Aberration - a chaotic scattering of blue rays that obstruct and dilute all other colours as they enter your eye. They believe this results in reduced visual sharpness, eyestrain and fatigue. BLOK® lenses filter these blue rays, allowing all colours to focus clearly on your retina. So colours are enhanced and objects appear much sharper and clearer, even on dull days. And because your eyes are no longer battling blue rays, you’ll notice a soothing relaxation effect - no matter how harsh the glare.
Secondly:

The lenses are polarised. Polarised lenses have an invisible film which acts like a ‘venetian blind’ blocking all the horizontal glare bouncing off water, cars and other shiny surfaces. They’re especially good for driving as they also eliminate hazardous dashboard reflections on your windscreen. The remarkable effect of this blue-block and polarised combination got me very excited about the value of this product. Even more so when I found out how well they're made. BLOK® lenses also block harmful UV rays and are made from anti-scratch CR-39, one of the finest high resolution lens materials in the world. The polarisation and filters are part of the lens itself - not a cheap coating that can rub off later. The black unisex frame is made from
Hi-Flex TR90 Nylon, making it super strong a nd durable - yet so light and comfortable you will hardly know you’re wearing sunglasses. For polarised sunglasses of this quality, without our lens, you could easily pay $200 upwards. Running on fumes
Q
I drive a 2002 Commodore and in the last month I have run out of petrol twice. The first time the electronic indicator showed 40km to empty, the second time 65km to empty, yet the gauge indicator was not on empty. I also often get a strong smell of petrol inside the car. Does this indicate a mechanical issue or should I just ignore the dashboard indicators?
Emma Devenish, Balcatta
A:
The fuel gauges on your model Commodore are known to give problems, so you are not alone. As well as the accuracy of the gauge, it sounds like your car may also have a fuel leak. Given this could potentially be dangerous, we recommend you take the vehicle to a workshop as soon as possible to have both issues addressed. Once these are fixed, you’re likely to save money on fuel as well as reduce the likelihood of being inconvenienced by running out of fuel.
Park and drive
Q
I have a 2010 Ford Falcon auto and I accidentally placed it into park the other day while driving at a speed of about 30km/h. It made a horrible ‘clattering’ sound for the 3-5 seconds it remained there. I immediately placed the gear back in drive and proceeded as normal. I then drove 160km home without any obvious transmission issues. The gears and ‘park’ still seem to work OK. Do you think I need to get it checked out?
Rodger Bryant, Narrogin
A:
Importantly, it sounds like you have not damaged a critical part of the park function called the parking pawl, which locks the transmission. However, it would be worthwhile having your vehicle checked by a workshop, especially if you do a lot of country driving. Draining and replacing the automatic transmission fluid should help remove any metal debris that may cause further damage within the unit.
Which unleaded?
Q
My wife bought a Ford Focus Trend last year. I was with her on the test drive and at the conclusion of the sale. At the time my wife asked the sales consultant which type of petrol the car required. She was told ‘unleaded’. Since then I have read the car owner’s manual and it states that 95RON fuel should be used. Does it really matter? If it does, then we have been misled and will have to keep buying the more expensive fuel.
Chris Quinell
A:
According to Ford, your Focus can use unleaded petrol with octane ratings of between 91RON and 98RON. While using 91RON petrol in your vehicle will not damage your car, you may notice higher-octane fuels such as 95RON and 98RON deliver slightly better fuel economy and smoother running than 91RON.

Weathering winter driving Winter weather places several additional stresses on you as a driver and on your car. Cold weather can cause older batteries to fail and is one of the most common RAC Roadside Assistance callouts. One of the warning signs of failure is the motor turning over more slowly. If your battery is a few years old, consider a replacement before it leaves you stranded. Cold winter temperatures can also lead to the loss of
tyre pressure, so regularly check you have the correct pressure in all tyres and a safe amount of tread. Also, make sure your windscreen wipers are in good condition and can completely clear water from your windscreen. And remember to keep your headlights on in heavy rain and darker daytime conditions. To keep you and your family safe on the road this winter make sure you feel confident handling difficult conditions. Training Team Leader from RAC DTEC Andy McLeod said motorists needed to be aware of the extra risks involved when driving in wet weather.
Members save 10 per cent on labour costs performed by RAC. Conditions apply.
“Increase your following distance. There are many benefits to having more time to react to the unexpected actions of others. Even cautious drivers can get caught in a skid. And don’t underestimate the value of professional driver training to help you stay safe.”
To improve the way you handle difficult winter conditions, consider a Defensive Driving course at RAC DTEC. To find out more visit dtec.com.au. For breakdown assistance or battery failure call RAC Roadside Assistance 24/7 on 13 11 11. To check the state of your battery, book a free battery check on 1300 657 482. June / July 2015 Horizons 55

Horizons winners’ amazing adventure Last year, Sheila McCrae and her partner Clark won a Horizons Kimberley holiday. We asked Sheila to share some of her favourite memories of their unforgettable adventure. “The Kimberley was already on our ‘to do’ list. We had planned to take our four-wheel drive and tent but instead, we had the most amazing experience with APT,” she said. “We flew from Perth to Broome where, at Cable Beach Resort, we met the other 18 people with whom we were to spend the next 15 days. We all gelled very well as a group and had a lot of fun. “George, our extremely friendly Exploring the Kimberley
and knowledgeable driver and guide, thought of every eventuality. “We already knew WA was a big state, but we gained a real appreciation of the vastness of The Kimberley. The scenery was spectacular. We had an abundance of waterfalls, gorges and ranges, beautiful boab trees, sunsets with red reflections on the ranges, and saw rivers including the Fitzroy, Drysdale, King Edward, Gibb and Ord. “We walked most days through bush, along rivers, through gorges and swam in the natural pools. We had a helicopter ride over the Mitchell Falls - my first trip in a helicopter. This most definitely was the trip of a lifetime for us.”
Fast alarm installation prevents second break-in The prompt installation of a home security system immediately following a home invasion has resulted in a second break-in being thwarted in the same week. During the initial home invasion, a woman asleep in the Byford home was woken by an intruder entering her bedroom. The intruder broke through a privacy lock installed on the bedroom door. The woman screamed and the intruder fled. The following day a police inspection found marks and dents over most of the home’s screens, doors and windows. There was concern the intruder had spent some time in the home and was now familiar with the layout and contents, so the home owner contacted RAC Security for a security consultation. The home was assessed and a full perimeter alarm system was promptly fitted following the break-in. Three days later, the toilet window sensor was activated at 11.30pm and the woman woke to the sound of the alarm and someone running from the property. No one had entered the home and, with the system in place and providing effective protection, the woman has since felt more at ease. Repeat break-ins are not uncommon and residents are urged to always take steps to improve home security immediately following a break-in. For advice about the right security system for your home, contact RAC Security for a free in-home consultation on 1300 132 735 or visit rac.com.au/security.

Mike O’Doherty’s Hillman Minx has been covered by RAC’s Roadside Assistance since 1934 and has transported three generations of drivers. Mr O’Doherty recalls some of his family’s affectionate Hillman Minx stories. “My grandfather ordered the Hillman Minx directly from England. It was a soft top with the optional four-speed gearbox with freewheel. “The Minx was purchased for my grandmother. My grandfather, always mindful of her comfort and safety, took out RAC Roadside Assistance as soon as the car was on the road. My grandmother loved her car and drove it for many years. The longest journey the Minx did was to Kalgoorlie and back travelling on gravel roads. “My grandparents would take my sister and me to the pictures at the Astor Theatre in
Mt Lawley every Friday night. The car could not be locked but it would be parked in the street with all our belongings inside. Nothing was ever stolen. When I got my licence at 17, I drove it for about 12 months. “After my grandparents passed away, my father Hugh became the owner and fully restored the Minx over several years. He joined The Vintage Automobile Association and my parents had many years of enjoyment driving it. “On my father’s death in 1996 my mother became the owner and transferred it into my name. “This is not just a car to me; it holds many cherished family memories and I will look after and maintain it until I pass it on to one of my children. So far the Hillman has clocked up 69,241 miles. That’s quite an achievement for a 1934 model!”
