Driverless, fully electric shuttle bus a reality in RAC’s staged trial It is widely recognised that increasing levels of automation in vehicles is an inevitable part of our transport future and the notion of driverless vehicles being on our roads is not a question of if, but when? As a state we must act now to ensure we are ready to embrace a range of transport solutions and new technologies through adequate planning for the efficient operation and management of new transport systems well into the future. Autonomous features such as radar cruise control and lane detection warning systems are already available in many vehicles and several vehicle manufacturers have indicated that self-driving cars will hit the market as early as 2017. In 2016, RAC’s commitment to leadership in the field of intelligent transport will see us stepping into the arena of autonomous vehicles with the trial of Australia’s first fully electric, driverless shuttle bus. The autonomous bus is a key part of RAC’s plan to further trial autonomous vehicle technology. Through NAVYA, a French company specialising in intelligent transport systems, RAC’s aim is to deliver a trial and provide Western Australians with the chance to experience the technology so we can learn more about how to most effectively harness it in our city and state. The staged trial will be the first of its kind in Australia and will enable us to develop a roadmap of changes needed to operate autonomous vehicles on our roads. The shuttle bus can transport up to 15 passengers and has a maximum speed of 45km per hour. The vehicle will complement the existing transport system

over distances that are too short to travel by car but too far to walk. The shuttle bus is fitted with multi-sensor technology providing 3D perception through which it maps the environment, detects obstacles on the road and interprets traffic signs. The shuttle bus is the result of 10 years’ research and expertise, which allows it to achieve the highest level of autonomy possible, making it an entirely autonomous or driverless vehicle. Safety will be a key focus of the trial and an independent safety review will be completed for prospective routes. RAC anticipates this first step will lead to further trials, research and collaboration that will increase our understanding of how driverless vehicles can be integrated into our transport system and ultimately, how the technology will affect the way in which our 840,000 members and the broader community move around our state.

The staged trial...will enable us to develop a roadmap of changes needed to operate autonomous vehicles on our roads.

Join the discussion about the RAC and the magazine The dangers of tailgating a long vehicle.

Honesty the best policy I am 71 years old and well aware I am not a very competent driver. I only drive to the two shopping centres near where I live, nowhere else. My ability to react to changing situations has decreased, my ability to see everything and respond has slowed. But I consider myself competent to drive safely to the shops and back. My friends argue that I should drive, that it’s just a matter of getting my confidence back. Bah! I tell friends I will not accept a lift from them if we want to go somewhere but insist on taking public transport, even if it takes longer, which it often does. This is alright as I have retired. Elderly drivers who want to drop out of the traffic shouldn’t feel inadequate. It’s okay if you don’t feel as competent as you once were and you don’t want to drive. You’re not a useless person; you’re honest. Name and address provided

Tips for tailgaters In response to Brian Bell and Rodger Bryant (Horizons, Dec/Jan and Feb/ Mar), I have been driving road trains and long vehicles for many years and in my opinion and the opinion of other drivers I have spoken to, the only reason we will indicate to let a vehicle know it is safe to overtake is when the vehicle is tailgating. It is hard enough keeping a heavy vehicle on the road as it is, with wild animals running out in front of you, cars coming towards you and the condition of some outback roads and long distances becoming a toll on the body. If a truck driver needs to slow suddenly or even stop we have to keep our eyes on our mirrors and then counteract what the vehicle tailgating is doing so that we don’t push the car off the road. Also if the driver of the tailgating vehicle runs into the second trailer it could send the trailer off course which would cause the trailer to go side to side and then the whole rig could end up in the bush on its side. My advice is to obey the law and stay back at a reasonable distance, maybe use the three second rule, wait for an overtaking lane

or if you do lots of country kilometres invest in a UHF CB Radio, turn to channel 40 and communicate with the driver. We don’t want to hold you up. Just remember we are in our workplace and want to get home safely as well. Ryan Scott

Give way, not raceway Why is it that as soon as some drivers leave the main road and enter a car park they automatically forget all road safety and assume they are on a raceway? Car parks are definitely not raceways with their sharp right angle corners, blind-spots and pedestrians. No car park I have entered has a posted speed limit, although 10km/h may be the norm. I have seen cars begin to reverse out only to stop suddenly as another driver races by. I have nearly been T-boned as I have made my way to the exit as another car has sped towards the junction hoping to beat me only to nearly collide with me. Andrew Knight

Keep the bike lane clean As a recreational and commuter cyclist I face a lot of road hazards on a daily basis, but the car parts and

glass that are swept into cycle lanes are making things very dangerous for cyclists. On a local road the debris from an accident covers the whole bike lane. We either have to cycle through it at considerable risk of an accident or puncture or pull out into the road, another hazardous choice. It is bad enough when bottles are smashed into the bike lanes (changing that behaviour might be a bridge too far). Please think before you put debris into bike lanes. It only takes one piece of metal, one branch or one bit of poly pipe to bring down a cyclist or possibly a whole group. Julie Winch

Snapshot News in brief from the RAC & beyond

Which fuel should you use? With a range of fuels powering many popular passenger cars, it’s important to have an understanding of how different fuels affect your vehicle.

The facts about misfuelling

The quality of unleaded petrol is measured using a Research Octane Number (RON) that indicates the fuel’s anti-knock threshold. If you use a fuel with a lower RON number than recommended for your vehicle, you may hear a ‘knocking’ sound coming from your engine due to the fuel detonating rather than burning smoothly. This reduces economy and performance and in time will damage your engine. Premium unleaded petrol carries a RON rating of 95 and 98. The 98 RON petrols are also claimed by their distributors to contain cleaning agents. There is a belief that using a fuel with a higher RON number than recommended for your vehicle will enhance its performance and economy. While using a fuel with a higher RON number will cause no harm, benefits will be minimal and usually don’t offset the considerable extra cost.

Putting petrol into a diesel vehicle’s tank and then attempting to drive it will almost certainly cause catastrophic engine damage. Putting diesel in the tank of a petrol vehicle is also not recommended.

Many Australianmanufactured vehicles along with most from Japan use 91 RON ULP, however an increasing number now require higher octane fuels.

Diesel passenger vehicles are now also commonplace with some owners preferring the benefits of diesel engines such as higher torque and better economy. E10 and E85 are ethanol-blended fuels. E10 may be used in many popular passenger cars, however E85 is suitable for a more limited range of vehicles. Always check your vehicle’s manual. Fuels with higher RON numbers cost more per litre, so it is always wise to check which fuel is required before buying a new car.

Dangerous storms are common in Australia. They can pose a threat to lives and cause millions of dollars in property damage each year.

With sporting clubs an important part of the social fabric of our community, RAC joined forces with the WA Sports Federation to present the awards to also raise awareness about road safety issues such as speeding, drink driving and drugs. Fremantle Dockers midfielder and Brownlow medallist Nat Fyfe received the prestigious The West Australian RAC Sports Star Award. Judith Pilatti, William Sinclair and David Carr were joint recipients of the RAC Insurance Service to Sport Award for their contributions to netball, baseball and athletics in WA. The Landsdale Netball Club was presented with the RAC Insurance Beyond Sport Award. A member of the club, Taylah Parry, became an amputee last year after a serious motor vehicle crash. The Landsdale Netball Club raised $8000 to buy gym equipment for Taylah to allow some of her rehabilitation to happen at home.

With the storm season almost upon us, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) is urging communities across WA to prepare while conditions are still mild. DFES Deputy Commissioner Lloyd Bailey said each year between May and October storms can bring dangerous conditions to the South West of WA, from the Great Southern region up to the Midwest Gascoyne. “Storms bring with them the risk of falling roof material, trees and branches, as well as destructive winds, heavy rain, flash flooding, lightning and hail,” Deputy Commissioner Bailey said. “It’s not only our coastal areas that are affected by storm damage; inland towns can be badly impacted by storms and severe weather, too. “Simple things such as clearing your gutters, securing loose materials around your home and trimming tree branches can make a big difference in alleviating the risks when a storm hits. “Now is the time to get ready as severe weather can happen when you least expect it.” Taking steps to prepare your home and family is the best way to stay safe during dangerous weather. For more information on what to do, visit dfes.wa.gov.au/wintersafe. SES volunteers can make temporary emergency repairs to homes that are badly damaged, including large fallen trees and damaged roofs. If your home is damaged by a storm and you cannot safely fix it yourself, call the SES for assistance on 132 500.

The survey found just under half of all respondents walk for 30 minutes or more per day in their local area on an average weekday, increasing to 58 per cent on weekends. Three in five respondents find it at least moderately easy to walk in their local area. However, respondents typically walk a lot less when they are outside of their local area. When commuting to their places of work or education, just under half travel by car but a reasonable proportion walk, either to catch public transport (17 per cent) or for their entire commute (nine per cent). Just over half the respondents believe the State Government should prioritise better planning of communities to provide more destinations, amenities and transport services within walking distance to encourage more people to leave the car at home for short trips and to walk instead. The survey is the first step to ensuring the needs of pedestrians are well understood and not overlooked in infrastructure planning. This is part of RAC’s commitment to making sure all Western Australians are able to move around their cities and towns in a safer, easier and sustainable way. April / May 2016 Horizons 11

Snapshot below: A 2013 report estimated that, each year, urban air pollution accounted for significantly more deaths than the nation’s road toll.

Clearing the air Volkswagen Group’s use of so-called emissions ‘defeat devices’ to evade clean air standards has drawn attention to the issue of vehicle emissions, and how they affect human health and the environment. Motor vehicles are the most significant contributors to air pollution in Perth. A number of air toxins, some of which are known or suspected to be carcinogenic, have been shown to be emitted primarily from motor vehicle exhausts. A 2013 report by the Australian Medical Association estimated that, each year, urban air pollution accounted for significantly more deaths than the nation’s road toll. Australia’s current vehicle emissions standards are based on the European Union (EU) Euro 4 standard. The EU is now implementing the higher Euro 6 standard. Last year, the Australian Government established a Ministerial Forum to report

Late last year, RAC, in partnership with Perth’s largest entrepreneurial hub, Spacecubed, announced three digital startup businesses had been selected to receive $20,000 in funding and participation in RAC’s 2016 SeedSpark accelerator program to develop their business idea. For the first time a Members’ Choice award was included, which went to CareCollective, a not-for-profit online disability directory providing families with an easier way to search for quality disability service providers. The startups were selected from applicants across Western Australia and they have since completed an

intensive eight-week program. RAC SeedSpark Program Director, Jamin Hirte, congratulated all entrants on their creative and innovative pitches. “We are especially proud to announce our very first Members’ Choice Award in which over 250,000 RAC members were invited to vote for a solution they’d like to see in our

community,” Mr Hirte said. Two other startups, Yabble and My Guide, joined RAC’s 2016 SeedSpark program. Yabble is an online marketplace where parents can discover, book and pay for after-school activities. My Guide is a mobile travel app that helps users plan and share their trips with other travellers through photos, videos and reviews.

back on options for managing fuel quality, air pollution standards and new measures to deliver Australia’s 2030 climate change targets. In Western Australia, RAC sits on the ministerial Air Quality Coordinating Committee, which oversees the implementation of the Perth Air Quality Management Plan. RAC has also participated in public vehicle emissions testing days, as part of the Department of Environmental Regulation’s CleanRun program, and will continue to play a role in helping to protect WA’s natural environment and mitigate the effect of climate change.

Our driverless future is here In an Australian-first, RAC is trialling a driverless shuttle bus in WA to test and understand autonomous vehicle technology.

M

any cars already have built-in autonomous vehicle technology and these features are becoming increasingly common, particularly in new vehicles. From automatic emergency braking, radar cruise control and lane-keeping, vehicles are becoming more automated, requiring less driver intervention. The number and type of autonomous vehicle features determine how

‘driverless’ a car is. Autonomy in vehicles can be understood in terms of ‘levels’ of automation, where a fully autonomous vehicle can perform all safety-critical functions and monitor conditions for an entire trip. Many mainstream vehicle manufacturers as well as some software companies are now designing and testing driverless vehicle systems, and some experts predict the release of fully autonomous production vehicles as early as 2017.

Despite the prevalence of autonomous vehicle technology, the idea of a car driving itself is still futuristic to many. However, as we quickly approach this future, there are many issues and challenges that we must consider, and while the idea remains in the realm of science-fiction, there will be many questions about the impact of these vehicles that we cannot answer. This is why RAC, with the support of the State Government, has acquired a fully autonomous, fully electric shuttle from April / May 2016 Horizons 17

French manufacturer, NAVYA. We want to test and understand, in a purposeful trial, how driverless vehicles operate and consider their likely impact. Equally, we want Western Australians to experience the technology, to ride in it, and to consider the possibility of autonomous vehicles in their day-to-day lives. The RAC’s trial will be staged in order to best understand the technology in varying situations and scenarios. RAC Group CEO Terry Agnew says the trial will be the first of its kind in Australia and will enable us to better consider the implications of the technology in real-world scenarios. “This trial will help members of the community, government and industry consider the potential impact and opportunities of autonomous vehicle technology. It will also help WA develop a roadmap of changes that will need to occur for fully autonomous vehicles to safely transition on to our roads.”

Trialling autonomous vehicle technology The predicted road safety and broader mobility benefits of driverless cars, including estimates of up to a 90 per cent reduction in crashes, has led many jurisdictions to begin testing and evaluating the technology. This Australian-first trial is one of many autonomous vehicle technology trials across the world. The United Kingdom’s Heathrow Airport has been transporting passengers in electric, autonomous pod

cars since 2011. Although these pod cars run on dedicated tracks and do not interact with other traffic, there are plans to adapt the pods for use in a trial on public roads in the Greenwich area in south London by mid-2016. The British Government also announced that it would contribute £100 million to autonomous car research. Currently, there are driverless vehicle trials underway in Bristol, Coventry, Milton Keynes and in Greenwich. The technology has been prioritised by the British Government to ensure the UK automotive sector keeps pace with rapid developments in autonomous cars worldwide. Similarly the US Government recently announced a contribution of $3.9 billion over the next decade for research and development of self-driving vehicles. Google’s driverless car is arguably the best-known autonomous vehicle operating on public roads. The cars have been legally allowed to operate in selected states in the United States since 2012, with more than 20 autonomous vehicles operating since 2015. In Ann Arbour, Michigan, the University of Michigan and the Michigan Department of Transport have developed a dedicated test facility resembling parts of a city for evaluating the capabilities of connected and automated vehicles. The facility simulates real-world situations for autonomous vehicle testing, including traffic signs and signals, footpaths, park benches, simulated buildings and street lights.

In Gothenburg, Sweden, consumers will be able to drive their own autonomous car with Volvo continuing to move towards its long-term plan of having 100 autonomous cars driving on selected roads by 2017. The city of Sion in Switzerland, is the latest site for a trial using NAVYA’s fully autonomous and fully electric shuttle bus. PostBus, acting on behalf of Swiss Post, plans to undertake a staged trial with two autonomous shuttles in a two-year test period.

RAC’s autonomous vehicle trial RAC’s trial involves several stages, with each stage designed to test and evaluate autonomous vehicle technology in a variety of settings and scenes. Each stage will involve increasing levels of complexity, including a greater number of obstacles, or traffic signals and road markings, then finally, interactions with road users. The first stage of the trial will take place at the RAC’s Driver Training Education Centre (DTEC), utilising a private 1.8km road circuit as well as several vehicle-manoeuvring areas. The shuttle bus is fitted with multisensor technology providing 3D perception that allows it to map and understand its environment, detect obstacles on the road and navigate along the most optimal route. The vehicle is also able to interpret traffic signs and traffic lights. Developed over 10 years, the shuttle operates at the highest level

The objective is not to replace existing services or routes but rather investigate how new technology might be utilised to diversify modes of transport.

of autonomy possible, making it an entirely autonomous, or driverless, series vehicle. The shuttle bus can transport up to 15 passengers and has a maximum speed of 45km per hour. An important feature of the shuttle bus is that it has been designed to complement the existing transport network and is best utilised to service what is known as the ‘first or last mile’ – those routes that are often too far to walk or too short to drive. The objective is not to replace existing services or routes but rather investigate how new technology might be utilised to diversify modes of transport. Mr Agnew says that as a state we must find solutions that incorporate a range of transport options as well as adapt to new technologies. “By giving Western Australians the chance to see autonomous vehicle technology, to potentially use it and experience it, we are learning more about it and working towards WA being ready for driverless vehicles.”

The road to driverless cars A KPMG UK report on Connected and Autonomous Vehicles, forecast that nearly 25 per cent of vehicles by 2030 would be fully autonomous. The current situation is that the technology is advancing ahead of the regulatory and legal frameworks needed to support their operation. The WA trial is one of the early steps needed to help ensure WA is ready for the changes. In its pre-budget submission, RAC also asked the Federal Government to consider and review regulations that specify where and how selfdriving vehicle technology could be implemented. Trials of this technology require funding and a coordinated approach from the State and Federal Government, as well as vehicle manufacturers, technology suppliers and many other stakeholder groups. A national framework is needed to ensure a flawless roll out. This includes the implementation of standards to ensure the integration of vehicles

Taking flight RAC was recently confirmed as the sponsor of Western Australia’s second emergency rescue helicopter and welcomed the State Government’s commitment to locate it in regional WA.

T

he new RAC Rescue helicopter will primarily be based in Bunbury where it will provide critical care medical services, essential hospital transfers and respond to search and rescue missions. RAC Group CEO Terry Agnew said RAC is committed to giving back to its members and the community, and is proud to now sponsor both RAC Rescue helicopters, having sponsored the Perth-based service since its inception in 2003. “Joining the existing Perth-based RAC Rescue helicopter, the helicopters will operate together as the state’s only dedicated 24-hour emergency rescue helicopter service and will help to provide medical assistance which is not always immediately on hand,” Mr Agnew said. “On average 75 per cent of missions

flown by the Perth-based RAC Rescue helicopter are to regional WA and the new regionally-based helicopter will provide the community with a greater chance of receiving treatment within the ‘golden hour’ of survival.” The ‘golden hour’ of survival is the first hour immediately after a victim sustains traumatic injury during which there is the highest likelihood that medical treatment will prevent death. Research indicates that the time saved by using helicopters to retrieve patients with major trauma injuries often reduces patient recovery time, the likelihood of long term serious injury and in many cases even death. The RAC Rescue helicopters are managed by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services. The Perth-based RAC Rescue helicopter has flown more than 4400 missions since 2003. l

Federal election:

Our top 10 transport priorities It’s a federal election year and RAC has developed a list of 10 transport priorities that we want to see Canberra throw its weight behind.

W

ould you like an easier commute into work each day, or more cycle paths to allow you and the kids to get to and from work and school safely, or simply more options for moving around your community and our state? RAC’s 10 transport priorities cover a broad sweep of issues that apply to each and every Western Australian and that’s why we’re calling on Federal Members of Parliament to get behind and commit to a number of infrastructure projects to keep the state moving. RAC’s priorities are aimed at supporting growth throughout the state, improving Western Australians’ quality of life and keeping our members safe and on the move. With Perth tipped to become the third biggest city in Australia by 2028, we believe now is a crucial time for Canberra to support these projects and initiatives.

Top five infrastructure projects

Perth light rail A longtime priority for the RAC, light rail would significantly reduce vehicle congestion on our overstretched road network and provide Perth residents with a convenient, cost-efficient and environmentally friendly way to get around. With Infrastructure Australia’s 2015 Infrastructure Audit estimating traffic congestion will cost Perth more than $16 billion a year by 2031, investing in new, efficient ways for commuters to get around is essential. We know there is strong support in the community and the businesses sector for light rail. For example, an RAC and Chamber of Commerce and Industry WA Congestion Survey of 400 businesses revealed that 64 per cent supported the reallocation of road space to light rail in the inner city suburbs. By the WA Government’s own estimates, there would be over 100,000 passenger boardings per day on the $2 billion MAX light rail network by 2031.

Highway upgrades

e Network management technologies Stick with us here – the term “network management technologies” may conjure up images of complicated systems controlled by robots. While these systems are indeed highly complex, they are actually aimed at something very simple: keeping the traffic flowing smoothly and safely. It can be as easy as upgrading traffic light signaling, so they work more efficiently and keep the traffic moving. Simply optimising and upgrading technology systems can have a dramatic effect on reducing congestion. We know that congestion is currently a burden on the state. The RAC and WA Chamber of Commerce and Industry business survey in 2015 found that 87 per cent of the respondents believe traffic congestion is having a negative impact on their operations, up from 78 per cent in 2013. Inefficient systems that result in traffic jams also have an environmental cost. Looking ahead to how self-driving vehicles will operate on our roads is also important. This is not a distant reality – semi-autonomous vehicles from a number of manufacturers are expected to be released in 2017. While self-driving vehicles cannot drive on our roads yet, a consideration and review of current regulations is needed and a flawless communication network and supporting architecture is required to support these types of vehicles. RAC is calling on the government to commit $300 million towards the deployment of Intelligent Transport Systems, including an integrated transport system required for selfdriving vehicles.

Thornlie rail line extension We have seen that Perth residents are positive about adopting rail as a means of transport, with patronage on the Mandurah line exceeding all expectations. Rail is also an efficient, safe and cost-effective way of getting around.

The extension of the Thornlie passenger rail line … would be one step towards meeting the growing demand for public transport. However, due to this growing popularity, by 2031 Perth’s public transport system will be required to carry more than twice as many people as it currently does. In fact, the 2015 Australian Infrastructure Audit forecasts that the Mandurah rail line will reach or exceed “crush capacity” by 2031. The extension of the Thornlie passenger rail line, which is well advanced with preliminary railway alignments and designs already completed, would be one step towards meeting the growing demand for public transport. Despite this, the project remains unfunded. The RAC is calling for a funding commitment towards the extension of the Thornlie rail line ($340 million in total project costs).

Highways require constant upgrades in order to keep them operating efficiently. Perth’s Mitchell and Kwinana freeways are operating at or near capacity for most of the day, making the Reid Highway, Tonkin Highway and Roe Highway increasingly important. However, bottlenecks are restricting free traffic movement resulting in more time lost in traffic, increasing safety risks and costs to businesses. In order to keep Perth moving safely and efficiently along its highways, the RAC is calling for funding towards a rolling program of grade separations and upgrades to Perth’s orbital route ($285 million in total project costs), comprising the Reid, Tonkin and Roe Highways, to freeway standard.

Bunbury Outer Ring Road The RAC recognises that other Western Australian centres, besides Perth, require ongoing Federal funding in order to keep their economies on the move. One example is Bunbury in the South West, WA’s second largest city. The Bunbury Outer Ring Road is a 19km dual carriageway planned to link Bunbury’s radial road connections to the Bunbury Access Road. A major part of the project is already complete but if the city is to feel the real benefits, the project needs to be progressed and completed in its entirety. Bunbury Outer Ring Road is an important regional initiative and requires further investment to complete the project. The RAC calls on the government to commit funding towards its completion ($675 million in total project costs).

Policy

Top five key policies

I

n addition to our top five infrastructure priorities, we have also identified five key policy areas to address the State’s infrastructure gap and funding deficit. The policies will also ensure more sustainable initiatives are at the forefront of government’s thinking.

Fund public transport infrastructure In 2012, RAC forecast there would be an additional one million vehicles in WA by 2020. Progressive, successful cities around the world are prioritising public transport solutions and while the RAC believes public transport solutions and road networks need to be developed in tandem, a focus on mass transport systems is critical for Perth residents. Traffic congestion is already holding back productivity and eroding people’s work-life balance. The reality is the road network cannot handle the demand being placed on it. Increasingly as the cost of congestion bites, more people require the flexibility to use public transport. In Perth by 2031, public transport will account for one in eight motorised trips, one in five of motorised trips in peak period, over 30 per cent of peak hour distance travelled and over 70 per cent of all trips to Perth CBD. It is no longer just about the car – it’s about options and choice. This is why RAC is calling on the government to commit to and develop an investment program that prioritises public transport infrastructure.

Vehicle safety standards WA’s Towards Zero campaign aims to reduce the fatality rate on the state’s roads to zero. While much has been made of WA’s lower road fatality rate in 2015 the reality is that tragically 161 people lost their lives on WA roads – a rate almost equivalent to where we were 10 years ago. Road safety is, of course, complex but Safe Vehicles is one element of Towards Zero. The Australian Design Rules (ADR) perform an important regulatory function by ensuring vehicles meet design standards. However, the process for setting standards must be flexible and dynamic, so it can accommodate rapid technical change. At the moment, examining new regulatory proposals and implementing them as ADRs takes far too long. This means that Australian drivers are missing out on the latest safety technologies that are often already in use in international markets. Another simple step the government can take is requiring ANCAP safety ratings to be displayed on vehicles at their points of sale. Just like energy ratings are required to be displayed on microwaves and fridges, it should be mandatory for cars to have their ANCAP rating clearly displayed.

The RAC calls on the government to reduce the time taken to examine new regulatory proposals and ensure consumers have access to the vehicle safety information by making the display of ANCAP star ratings at the point of sale mandatory.

… the WA Auditor General in 2009 identified that the state was facing an $800 million maintenance backlog.

Motorist taxation revenue You might have noticed that some of WA’s roads are in less than tip-top shape. Narrow seal, poor surface condition and hazardous roadsides are common complaints from all road users. In fact, the WA Auditor General in 2009 identified that the state was facing an $800 million maintenance backlog. And when you consider how much the Federal Government collects from WA motorists and how much is spent on our roads, you can quickly see that things don’t quite add up. In 2015, for every one dollar collected from WA motorists the Federal Government returned just 34 cents to WA transport infrastructure. This declined from 41 cents in 2014 and 37 cents under the previous government.

The RAC calls for a fairer distribution of funding from revenue raised from WA motorists and consideration of the merits of a reformed charging system as part of a genuine reform of taxation on motorists.

public transport in Perth will account for

Cycle network infrastructure Cycling is a great way to keep fit, a way to commute to and from work, university or school and of course Perth’s mild climate means that we should be the perfect place for cyclists. However, safety concerns and the lack of connected cycling means that many would-be-cyclists opt for other transport options instead. RAC’s 2015 Cycling Survey revealed that 46 per cent of respondents felt moderately or extremely dissatisfied with existing on road cycling infrastructure.

An investment of just $50 million over four years would be a transportation “game-changer”. Despite this, in the same survey 71 per cent of respondents consider investment in cycling infrastructure as a top government priority. An investment of just $50 million over four years would be a transportation “game-changer”.

The RAC calls on the government to allow allocations for cycling infrastructure to be made from the existing Black Spots Program, to safely separate cyclists from freight and commercial traffic along major arterial corridors.

Vehicle emission standards We all know that petrol- and dieselfuelled vehicles contribute significantly to CO2 emissions on our roads and there has never been a better time to support more energy efficient vehicles, such as electric cars, particularly when charging infrastructure, such as the recharging stations along the RAC Electric Highway®, is becoming more common. However, at the moment, Australia does not have a CO2 emissions standard for the new light vehicle fleet.

The RAC calls on the government to introduce an appropriate mandatory light vehicle emissions standard based on carbon dioxide emissions which sets an emissions intensity target for the Australian light vehicle fleet.

Motoring By Jane Hammond Photography Frances Andrijich

Labour of love Now in his 90s, motoring legend Cliff Byfield has been designing and building cars by hand since the 1940s. A visit to his workshop reveals a remarkable lifetime of motoring design.

ts mid-morning and the temperature is climbing into the high 30s but 92 year-old Cliff Byfield shows little sign of fatigue as he labours inside a stiflingly hot tin shed in his backyard in Perth’s eastern suburbs. The master craftsman is fashioning pieces for his latest project, a handmade Riley sports car. And this is no model; it’s an actual working vehicle that he can’t wait to drive. The car is currently away from his backyard workshop while it is spray painted a rich plum colour but there is still work to do on the final fit out. There are the chrome trims, the polished curly-jarrah wood dashboard, and the vintage-look leather seats to be made. All are being created from scratch. Mr Byfield looks like a man at least 20 years his junior. He is astonishing in his ability to design and work with metal and wood and in his agility and strength. Mr Byfield has lost count of the number of luxury cars he has designed, built or rebuilt over the years but thinks it is somewhere between 20 and 30. Some of his hand-made cars are with friends and family but most have passed through multiple owners. But Mr Byfield has kept his all-time favourite car, his heritage green Byfield SS Jaguar. He has declined six figure offers for the unique vehicle and uses it occasionally to go for a spin or to drive to local car shows where it is put on display. He has hand crafted everything on the convertible green Jag with the exception of the running gear, but has rebuilt the engine. He has even given it an automatic transmission so that his wife Jean can drive it more easily. “It’s just such a lovely thing to drive,” Mr Byfield says. Another of his vehicles is proudly displayed in the motor museum at Whiteman Park. The sporty yellow Jaguar sits alongside a small clay model of its bodywork. It is the only time Mr Byfield

I like Aston Martins or the Elvas – the English cars or the early Mercedes. has used the clay technique, which is commonly employed by car companies to visualise a completed car. He finds his cars difficult to part with and describes them all as a “labour of love”. Each takes around four years to make. Mr Byfield spends six hours a day in his workshop six days a week. At night he sits in front of the TV with Jean but

doesn’t watch what’s on the box, instead he draws plans for his latest designs. Ms Byfield describes her husband of 38 years as “quite remarkable” and tells me quietly how proud she is of his work and passion. “He can see things he is designing as three-dimensional cross sections. That is the way he thinks,” Ms Byfield says. “He will draw a design but then never take it down to the shed. Once he has drawn it, it’s in his head.” Mr Byfield was born in Northam in 1923 and left school at 14 to take up an apprenticeship as a coach builder in Perth. During this time he developed the metal work skills he would later use to craft his hand-made cars. At age 18 he joined the army and later the RAAF, where he was a gunner on the Lancasters that flew over Europe. After the war he briefly studied architecture but says the maths defeated him, particularly calculus, so he went back to coach building and completed his apprenticeship. In the post war years cars were hard to get in Perth and so Mr Byfield set to April / May 2016 Horizons 29

Cliff’s cars: After more than half a century of building cars, here are a few of those Mr Byfield remembers most fondly:

Citroen: This was the first car Mr Byfield built and was fashioned out of the burnt out wreck of an old Citroen. Its unusual shape and sporty look turned heads in Perth in 1954 when it hit the road.

Byfield Jaguar V12: One of three best-known Byfield Jags, the V12 was completed in 2003 when Mr Byfield was 82. It is housed in the Whiteman Park Motor Museum.

The Repco Holden: Built by Mr Byfield in the 1950s together with motoring identities including Jack Ayres, this vehicle went on to win many races in the 1950s and 60s and became an icon in WA motor sports. The car was thought lost until it was discovered in a Perth backyard in the 1970s and restored with the help of Mr Byfield in the 1990s.

I don’t do it for the financial reward. I do it because at the end of the day I’ve created something so the day hasn’t been wasted.

work to build his own vehicle using the burnt out wreck of an old Citroen. That set him on a path for a life-long hobby designing and building luxury handmade sports cars. “When I built that one you couldn’t get cars for love nor money. I built it out of necessity,” Mr Byfield says. “I’ve been building cars since the end of the war. Ferraris and Maseratis don’t interest me. I like Aston Martins or the Elvas – the English cars or the early Mercedes. “I rarely if ever use part of an old car unless it’s the grill, which then identifies the car. I prefer to make it all myself. I always rebuild the motors. I make the seats but I don’t upholster them because I don’t have a sewing machine, so I get someone else to do that.” It’s not just what’s under the bonnet or a car’s interior parts that Mr Byfield assembles. Remarkably, he also shapes the body panels in his own workshop. In the post war years Mr Byfield had a business building the bodies of trucks and had up to 15 employees. He eventually sold the business and took up teaching manual arts to high school students. It was at Cyril Jackson High School that Mr Byfield met his wife-to-be, a fellow teacher at the school. When students at the school began to ask about his car-building hobby Mr Byfield decided to teach them that building a handmade luxury car was possible. Together with the students he created what he describes as a

“mongrel”, a car built from the parts of many wrecks. That same car has since travelled from Esperance to Kununurra on some of the state’s bumpiest back roads. Recently Mr Byfield has turned his attention to carpentry and his skills have been put to good use in making the dash and window trims in his classic cars. When designing a car Mr Byfield uses imagination mixed with classic lines and shapes. While most of his creations would not look out of place in The Great Gatsby, others look like they could come from the set of a James Bond movie. “I’ve been drawing cars since I was a kid in grade school,” he says. “I don’t do it for the financial reward. I do it because at the end of the day I’ve created something so the day hasn’t been wasted.” Secretary of the MGTC Owners Club of WA and Mr Byfield’s mate Colin Bonney says Cliff is an artist. “Cliff has built some of the most memorable cars in motor sport history in WA,” Mr Bonney says. RAC Manager Vehicles and Fuels, Alex Forrest, said Mr Byfield is “an absolute living legend” who is much treasured by car enthusiasts in WA. “His skills and techniques are phenomenal, particularly in an era when that sort of skill is fading away. “The fact he is able to shape opposing body panels, such as two front wings, by eye and using traditional equipment is astonishing given the finished products inevitably look identical. “He is best known for building the body of a Repco Holden in 1958. The car went on to become one of WA’s iconic sports cars.” Mr Byfield says his current car project will be his last and then adds that he did say that the last time he finished a car. “If something really lovely came up that was of real interest then I might be tempted to build a body on it, but just to go out and get started on another one: Not on your nelly.” Whatever happens Mr Byfield says he has no plans to stop tinkering in his shed until he is no longer physically able to pick up his tools. l

Misty mornings, magical days The cooler months of the year are the ideal time to explore the region around Denmark – from magical treetop adventures to snug eateries featuring locally produced fare – there’s so much to discover. 32 Horizons April / May 2016

alking in the ancient forests or facing the tumultuous Southern Ocean is one of the life-affirming joys of travel in this part of Western Australia. Winter offers the opportunity of quiet discovery, when you may need a few more layers of clothing but your reward is quieter roads, attractions that you may feel have been opened just for you and nights spent by a roaring fire. A drive from Perth takes on the

same rituals. A roadside pie, fading radio signal and pit stops in the towns along the South West Highway. I keep my fingers crossed for secondhand treasures at Rero’s Up Country Collectables in Balingup, a rustic sausage roll at the Olde Shed and then it’s onwards towards Bridgetown and Manjimup. Stopping to fill up as we go there’s no denying you’re in the country; an attendant to pump your petrol and a conversation with the cashier that doesn’t end in them trying to spruik their latest special offer.

Northcliffe Northcliffe, 345km from Perth, could at first appear to be a place to bypass or fill up and head on, but a closer look offers a glimpse at its history from the Group Settlement Scheme of the 1920s to the present day. Now better known for dairy farming than timber, a visit to the Pioneers Museum provides an insight into the history of the town with photographs, stories, antiquated machinery and memorabilia. It tells the stories of how migrant families tamed the forests, dunes and swamps in order to make a life for themselves. At the Understory arts centre, an accessible 1.2km woodland walk takes up to an hour.

Travel assistance RAC Travel can assist with planning, maps and guides, along with some accommodation bookings. Plus, members can receive special member discounts for some attractions in this region.

This is an attraction that responds to the history and the environment of the area, it’s what Fiona Sinclair of Southern Forest Arts describes as “a creative response to this unique place and part of a movement of site specific artwork”. Over 50 local, national and international artists travelled to the area and created works that can be viewed along the walk. Audio tours for kids and adults are a mix of poetry, stories and artist commentary. The diverse collection has grown, added to each year, including work across the exhibit by Indigenous artists including celebrated novelist Kim Scott. Driving towards the coast from Northcliffe, the D’Entrecasteaux National Park flanks you on either side as you drive the 25km to Windy Harbour where the shack settlement built by fishermen and farmers is an insight into a part of WA’s past coastal life. A popular fishing spot, it’s also the starting point for a number of coastal and cliff-top walks that range

from family friendly and accessible to a little more challenging. Inland between Northcliffe and Windy Harbour, a walk up Mt Chudalup, a 187m granite outcrop, sees you rise amongst the Karri and Marri with views over wetlands to the ocean. Weather conditions should be considered on both coastal and inland walks. Polytechnic West Mt Chudalup’s granite sections can be treacherous when wet. Walpole A 97km drive from Northcliffe and 423km from Perth, Walpole is edged by forest. A cabin with a wood fire and mugs of hot chocolate could be a little too tempting after a day on the road but Delys Martin, owner of Tinglewood Cabins, tips heading to the town jetty to watch the sunset over the inlet, and heading out early to walk the Swarbrick Art Loop amidst the old growth Karri forest. For those with more time Mount Franklin and the surrounding national park offers an experience that some bypass for the better-known attractions. Back at the town jetty for 10am, the WOW Wilderness EcoCruise, is led by Skipper Gary Muir. His reputation precedes him – people smile wryly when mentioning you’ll be taking his tour of the Nornalup and Walpole inlets. Part performer, tour guide and eco crusader, Muir engages immediately with the group, making the experience relevant to all ages and nationalities. An expert on the natural and social history of the area, three hours takes you from the Gondwana supercontinent to

the conservation efforts of the last century to tangents that include Walpole’s connection with Tolstoy and Shakespearean quotes. There’s no well-worn script and as Muir explains, “every tour is different. It depends on who’s with us and what we see along the way”. Driving towards Denmark, the region’s major attraction is the Valley of the Giants’ Tree Top Walk. The treetop walk takes you 40m up among the canopy of the red tingle forest. For those who like to keep their feet planted on terra firma, the Ancient Empire is an interpretative trail between

the trees, many up to 400 years old. Julie Ross, business manager at the Tree Top Walk, thinks that winter offers a distinctly different experience for visitors. “The misty mornings are quite magical,” says Ms Ross. “It’s quieter with fewer people here, which offers a different atmosphere. The tranquility and beauty is evident at this time of year and the forest offers a different experience. Tingle trees can be seen to foam from the trunk and you’re more likely to see quokkas. Many people think they’re just on Rottnest but we have a healthy community here.” While WOW Wilderness EcoCruises does not tend to operate in August, the Treetop Walk is open year round, with Ms Ross saying, “we very rarely close due to hazardous conditions and whatever the time of year our guides work very hard to ensure a great experience”. Travel clockwise from below: In the winter, seek out the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow at Wilson Inlet, near Denmark; learn about the region’s truffle production; or indulge in gourmet coffee at one of Denmark’s many cafés and eateries.

The misty mornings are quite magical. The tranquillity and beauty is evident at this time of year. Denmark A 66km drive from Walpole and 410km from Perth, Denmark has small town charm that locals are justifiably proud of. “Oh we’re not Margaret River”, is a satisfied refrain you’ll hear time and time again; a sentiment that values the country town vibe, above visitor numbers. This could change as the town is propelled into the spotlight with Australian-born, Hollywood star, Simon Baker choosing the town as the location for his feature film directorial debut. An adaptation of Tim Winton’s novel Breath, the coastal splendour will have top billing all over the world. Denmark has carved out a stellar reputation as a food and wine destination. Anna Gare, known to the nation for her TV shows and cookbooks recently made Denmark home with husband and one time NBA star Luc Longley. For Ms Gare it’s an area that feeds her passion for good food and a better life. “At weekends exploring

between Walpole and Bremer Bay, we’ll come across another cove,” says Ms Gare, who is enthused by this new coastal life. “It’s simple and beautiful in such a natural way. The whole region is packed with people using traditional methods. Producers growing heirloom vegetables, great seafood and our cool climate wines.” You don’t have to look far for good food in Denmark. Ravens serves specialty coffee and wholefood; the hip staff, not out of place in a Perth inner suburb, navigate the brisk coffee trade. At Mrs Jones there’s less of a graband-go vibe, with the adjoining Old Butter Factory one of a number of gallery-come-artists studios within the area. Take Scotsdale Road to discover many of the area’s wineries, both large and small, from Rockcliffe, Howard Park, Paul Nelson and Singlefile. It all adds up to a magical winter break. l

Where is it?

In the South West of Western Australia, east of the Margaret River Region and west of Albany, the area is home to several national parks, world-class natural attractions and a growing reputation for its cool climate wines and food scene. For an alternative scenic loop to Denmark take Muir Highway via Mt Barker and Albany.

On the road

Country driving rules apply, so be aware of wildlife and hikers where the Bibbulmun and other tracks cross roads. With morning mists and rain likely speed should be a consideration as should stopping distances of both yourself and other vehicles.

When to go

The region is an ideal all-year destination and offers a different type of experience during the cooler months. With some businesses closing in the winter months June offers the best availability.

Places to stay

Good motel, camping and caravanning accommodation are available but for the winter down south opt for a cabin or chalet such as Tinglewood Cabins in Walpole or Karma Chalets in Denmark, both of which offer comfort, luxury and log burning stoves.

What to pack

Winter in the Southern Forests can be wet and evening temperatures low. The advice is to rug up and embrace the cold. Dressing to be waterproof and warm is advised, as is sturdy footwear.

Finding Eden

he sun is slowly dipping into the horizon, casting a golden glow across the mirror-calm ocean as a pod of dolphins frolic alongside the ship. From my private balcony, I’m enjoying a glass of wine and canapés delivered daily to my cabin by room steward Viddy. The only sound that breaks the silence is the slapping of the ocean against the ship. It is almost as if it can’t get any better. But then, it does. After a change of clothes in my dressing room, I join my group for an evening with a celebrity chef at Salt grill by Luke Mangan. Mangan serves entrees himself, before he signs a copy of his book for everyone in our group. The evening is rounded off with a late-

night comedy show before we climb into our king-size beds and fall asleep to the gentle roll of the ocean. It’s just another night on one of P&O’s newest ships, Pacific Eden, which will be sailing from Fremantle during 2016/17.

below: The Lido Pool Deck features a barbecue, bar and live music during the day and becomes a party venue by night.

As a relatively inexperienced cruiser, I wasn’t sure what to expect from Pacific Eden. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised. Unlike the new mega-liners, Pacific Eden has capacity for just 1,500 guests. Having been built for Holland America in 1993, the ship has a classical design that includes wide wooden decks and generous balconies, ensuites and penthouse cabins. While there is plenty of entertainment and activities onboard, unlike some other new ships, you won’t find huge waterslides or ice skating rinks.

Take a lanyard Your cruise card is your room key and payment method all in one, so keeping it easily close at hand is vital.

Duty-free A Pandora shop sells a variety of jewellery at great prices. A host of other duty-free products, including perfume and watches, are also available.

After P&O purchased Pacific Eden and her sister ship Pacific Aria last year, they each underwent a massive refurbishment in November 2015. Both vessels were dry docked in Singapore for their multi-million dollar upgrades. The refurbishment has stayed true to P&O’s statement of being ‘Like no place on earth’. Tillberg Design of Sweden led the revamp and the result is refined dining spaces, resort-style outdoor pool areas, such as the cabanas around the pool, complete with navy and white sun-loungers and billowing white curtains, stylish bars and contemporary communal areas. The ship’s communal interiors reflect contemporary Australian lifestyle and culture. Guests will be delighted by the little quirky touches such as the themed-lifts and the curious numbering on the main staircase. Music has also been specially curated throughout the ship – it is different in every bar and

restaurant and changes throughout the day, while the Blue Room features live music every evening. The cabins haven’t been redesigned, but I enjoyed the spacious feel of my suite, including ensuite bathroom with bath, separate dressing room and, best of all, vast balcony – large enough to easily fit two sun lounges plus table and chairs. For those seeking a more refined cruise experience, a suite is recommended.

Something for everyone So what type of cruiser does Pacific Eden suit? On our three-night “taster” cruise, there was a vast diversity of guests onboard – from a large family group celebrating a 50th birthday, through to young families with children, older couples and youthful groups of friends who were onboard primarily to enjoy the pool in the day and the comedy at night, which was part of the themed comedy cruise. Short cruises tend to attract a diverse demographic and are an ideal way for first-timers to experience what a cruise holiday can offer. The diversity of passengers onboard is reflected in the dining and entertainment options. From daily trivia in the Ocean Bar; wine tasting sessions featuring the Hunter Valley’s Glandore Estate Wines; feature films on the big screen; fitness classes; art and craft tutorials; live evening entertainment at the newly upgraded Marquee Theatre; or late-night themed “Bianco” or “Gatsby” parties, there is plenty to choose from. I, however, needed little encouragement for some R&R – lounging in the adults-only Oasis pool area or reading and soaking up the sun on my private balcony. The newly refurbished spa and salon are also well worth a visit (or even two). April / May 2016 Horizons 41

cruise fare and advanced booking is required, so factor that into your planning. Also, be sure to ask your travel agent about what drinks packages are available onboard, as these can offer great value.

Spa manager Rosie proudly showed me the new salon, where guests can enjoy a manicure, pedicure or hair styling session while overlooking the sparkling ocean. Or, do as I did and indulge in a bespoke Elemis facial before making the most of the thermal suite. This includes steam room, sauna, mineral bath and hot stone beds where you can lie back, take in stunning sea views or simply have a snooze surrounded by calming warmth.

Keeping active

Cruising has always been closely associated with dining and Pacific Eden is no different. Whether you fancy grabbing a burger straight off the barbecue beside the pool, indulging in a degustation dinner, or sampling signature Asian or Italian dishes, there is something for everyone. Much of Pacific Eden’s refurbishment was focused on the dining spaces. Instead of a traditional cruise buffet, The Pantry offers a more modern approach. Guests can sample a range of different foods and flavours, from traditional fish ‘n chips to fresh salads and Mexican fare, served from their own stations. Two of my lunchtime favourites were the crunchy Thai noodle salad or the fresh Caesar salad wrap. The Waterfront restaurant is an elegant all-day dining space complete with soaring ceilings, an a la carte menu and table service. Dining at The Pantry and The Waterfront is included in your fare. Then there is the New Zealand Natural ice-cream and espresso bar, located near the pool, which is a hit with kids and adults alike, while the new speciality restaurants – pan-Asian Dragon Lady and Italian Angelo’s are more private venues, and Salt grill by Luke Mangan delivers an exceptional dining experience.

And while there is a plethora of activities available onboard, simply being at sea where you can truly switch off was a lovely experience.

I couldn’t resist Mangan’s signature crab omelette and miso broth, which exceed expectations, followed by perfectly seared tuna, with just enough space for a taste of the chef’s famous liquorish parfait. For groups seeking an intimate dining experience, the private dining room seats 14 people for a degustation menu with matched wines. Dining at the speciality restaurants is not included in your

above (from top to bottom): Dining options include the relaxed Pantry, which serves a variety of fare, as well as speciality restaurants; the sumptuous Penthouse Suite offers the ultimate in luxury accommodation.

Journeys at sea Like many short “taster” cruises, ours did not make any port visits. Some shorter cruises do include a shore excursion, while longer trips usually take in a few destinations. Pacific Eden will operate a variety of itineraries from Fremantle between April and June 2016 and during 2017. Sample cruises include three or four nights at sea or with one regional stop at the likes of Esperance; longer eight-night trips visiting Geraldton and Broome; or 12-night South Pacific cruises. For those seeking to travel further afield, Pacific Eden will make two cruises to and from Singapore, with stops including Langkawi in Malaysia, Phuket in Thailand and Sabang in Indonesia. No doubt Western Australians will enjoy many unforgettable holiday experiences with Pacific Eden over the coming two seasons. l

Food, glorious food

With so much culinary choice, plus the Glandore Estate Wines and cocktails to tempt you, it is understandable many passengers are keen to keep active onboard. Luckily, this is easy to do on Pacific Eden. I ordered a yoga mat to my suite, which I put to good use on the balcony. Or make three laps of Deck 6 and you will clock up a mile. Fitness classes include Zumba, dancercise or spinning and a fully equipped gym is available throughout the day, too. If outside sports are more your thing, join a pool volleyball session or try the P&O Edge Adventure Park, which includes activities like abseiling.

must-do travel experiences

Cape Town is quite simply an incredibly good looking city, set along a dazzling coastline with a stunning mountain backdrop. It also has a beating heart with many cultural influences, outstanding architecture, art and exciting fine dining experiences. And all this is within easy reach of an equally impressive wine region. Be sure to visit the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront — an attractive shopping, dining and entertainment precinct. Beyond the city, head to Table Mountain National Park. There are many walking trails or you can get a bird’s-eye view from the cable car. A trip to the park’s Cape of Good Hope, with its massive sea cliffs, is not to be missed.

Epicurean enthusiast? Off-the-beaten track adventurer? Outback wonderer? No matter your style of travel, these 10 outstanding destinations are sure to make it onto your bucket list.

Stockholm SWEDEN

The Swedish capital boasts a rich history and an interesting modern edge with cobbled streets, well-kept medieval buildings and fashionable restaurants and bars filled with trendy young Swedes. Although built on 14 islands connected by 57 bridges the city is easy to explore, especially by boat. Stockholm’s museums contain some remarkable artworks. For pop culture fans there’s also ABBA: The Museum, dedicated to Sweden’s most famous musical export. Foodies will be impressed by the culinary delights. Enjoy traditional dishes including meatballs (köttbullar) and pickled herring (sill) or try Stockholm’s stylish modern food scene. Summer (June–August) is the best time to visit and with many hours of daylight then, there is always plenty going on.

Kyoto Japan

Once Japan’s capital, the ancient city of Kyoto is surrounded by mountains and filled with beautiful temples, shrines and stunning gardens. There are 17 World Heritage Sites within the Kyoto Prefecture. Visit the World Heritage listed Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion with its main hall covered in gold leaf. The Gion district is brimming with theatres, restaurants and tea houses and is most famous for its geishas. Kyoto is known for its kaiseki dining, which consists of multiple courses served in a prescribed order. Cherry-blossom season begins in March and is a particularly popular time to visit.

Alaska USA For anyone seeking unique wildlife and wilderness experiences, Alaska covers all bases. This vast state contains glaciers, icefields, volcanoes, forests and incredible wildlife including bears, bald eagles, migrating humpback whales, moose and caribou. Denali National Park is one of Alaska’s true highlights. The park’s Mount Denali is the highest mountain in North America and the scenery is breathtaking. The Inside Passage, with its spectacular islands and fjords, is a popular route for cruises with Glacier Bay an unforgettable scenic landscape. Alaska’s climate varies across its four main regions, so what to pack not only depends on when you go but where you go. In summer, the days are long with the far north experiencing up to 24 hours of sunlight.

5 Nelson and Marlborough New Zealand

Located at the top of New Zealand’s South Island, the coastal regions of Nelson and Marlborough are hotspots for world-renowned wines and fresh produce. Take a tour of the picturesque vineyards and restaurants for a taste of some of New Zealand’s finest food and wine. Book an adventure tour among the patchwork of bays and islands that make up the stunning Marlborough Sounds and don’t miss Abel Tasman National Park — its forests and beautiful beaches are a magnet for visitors and locals who come to hike, paddle, swim and snorkel in the crystal clear water. This region is also one of New Zealand’s sunniest.

Machu Picchu PERU The ancient Peruvian citadel of Machu Picchu, high in the Andes Mountains, is one of the world’s most mystical destinations. Built during the Inca Empire on a steep ridge, it is an incredible feat of engineering and many of the mysteries surrounding its construction and role remain unsolved. It is possible to get there by walking the Inca Trail but it is very challenging, takes several days and must be done with an official guide. Most people travel from Lima or Cuzco. To get there in style, take a ride on board the luxurious Belmond Hiram Bingham train. There are plenty of touring options from a range of companies to choose from, just make sure you book ahead.

8 Montreal Canada

9 The Kimberley Western Australia

Montreal’s unique blend of French and North American culture can leave you feeling as if you’ve just visited two cities, not one. Old Montreal’s cobbled streets and 18th-century French architecture practically transports you to the streets of Paris, while the modern face of Montreal is edgy with a vibrant arts scene and many renowned festivals, including the Montreal Jazz Festival. Highlights include the famous Notre-Dame Basilica, Rue StDenis with its hip shops, bars and bistros, and the Museum of Fine Arts, which holds artworks by Rembrandt, Picasso and Monet. Montreal also has a reputation for its dynamic food scene, with many cultural influences and a fabulous choice of world-class dining experiences.

Many holidaymakers to Broome happily ensconce themselves in this Western Australian resort town, rarely venturing further. But the history-rich pearling capital is also a gateway to the vast Kimberley region, where Aboriginal tour operators welcome you to their communities, sharing their stories and culture. On the Dampier Peninsula, enjoy beach-combing, fishing and looking for crocs through Bardi country, then go crabbing and feast on the catch while staying in the Lombadina Community. At Mimbi Caves near Fitzroy Crossing, ponder fascinating rock formations and view rock art in Gooniyandi country before cruising imposing Geikie Gorge. Wind your way through Windjana Gorge or tour fascinating Tunnel Creek.

10 Penang Malaysia Malaysia’s undisputed food capital is a true melting pot of flavours and cultures. Penang is renowned as a hawker’s paradise in a country where street food rules. In Penang’s buzzing and often chaotic capital, George Town, you can see and taste many cultural influences, chiefly Chinese but also Indian and British. George Town’s 2008 World Heritage listing has seen many grand historic buildings restored and has given the city a new dimension.

North-west of George Town is Batu Ferringhi, a long stretch of beach lined with palm trees, resorts and restaurants. For a break from the buzz, head to the island’s lush forests and hills and take one of the many walk trails.

Being home to 11 of the world’s 13 climate zones, Hawaii Island, nicknamed the Big Island, offers a range of experiences from hiking through lush rainforests, watching the red glow of lava from Kilauea — one of the most active volcanoes in the world, stargazing from the snow-capped heights of Mauna Kea or teeing off on one of its many pristine golf courses. But for a sheer adrenalin rush, try a night-time snorkel with majestic manta rays at Keauhou Bay. Spotlights are used to illuminate plankton, while scuba divers below and snorkellers above are treated to an underwater circus as giant manta rays glide in mesmerising patterns swimming within centimetres of snorkellers.

Travel brief Be cautious when travelling with medicines Australian travellers who need to take medicines overseas should ensure they have made the right inquiries and arrangements before they travel.

If you’re carrying medicines classified under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) they must be prescribed to you for your personal use. You should carry a letter from your medical practitioner and leave the medicine in its original packaging. It is illegal to carry PBS medicines out of Australia

unless they are for your personal use or the personal use of someone travelling with you. Some medicines, even when obtained on a legal prescription in Australia, should not be transported across certain international borders unless they are accompanied by a customs clearance from the appropriate consulate or embassy. If you’re unsure of your obligations, talk to your doctor before you travel. It’s also wise to check with the embassy, high commission or consulate of the country you’re visiting to ensure your medicine can legally be carried into that country. Test drive Alex Forrest reviews the latest cars on our roads.

Toyota Corolla

A

ustralia’s most popular car has had a makeover inside and out. There’s a fresh new interior, which makes it much more competitive against the Mazda3 and Volkswagen Golf, and a sharper front and rearend design, but there’s more than that. Deep under the skin, the new Corolla has been tweaked to make it ride and handle better, with revised shock absorbers and stabiliser bar bushes, and the rear suspension has also been retuned with the aim of improved ride quality. However, the most important new addition to the Corolla is a reversing camera to every variant, making lens-assisted rear visibility standard

across the range. The Corolla isn’t the first small car to have a reversing camera as standard across the range (Hyundai i30 and Volkswagen Golf have it too), but this is great to see and deserves acknowledgement. The revisions to the interior are significant, though it must be said there was plenty of room for improvement in the superseded model. The new centrally mounted touch screen looks and works far better than the previous system, which had small and fiddly controls. The system is operated purely via the touch screen itself, as opposed to a centre consolemounted knob, which is present on some competitors. The air vents, interior door

handles and gear lever surround have also been redesigned and the result is a much sharper and more premium look and feel. Mechanically, the engine is essentially the same as in the previous Corolla, although the auto transmission has been revised and this has shaved consumption down to 6.1 litres per 100km (from 6.6L/100km) in the ADR test. The result of all these changes is a Corolla that’s a far more

attractive proposition to private buyers than it’s ever been. The interior revisions are a significant factor here, and a good match for the expectations of the growing group of consumers looking for luxury in a small car package. Although the Corolla’s handling isn’t as sporty and engaging as that of the Golf, it does ride well and you know there will be absolutely no questions about its reliability. l

ast year was a tough one for Volkswagen. In fact, the company simply won’t be the same again following the diesel emissions scandal. Before that, there were DSG gearbox problems and engine reliability issues. Now, there is little doubt Volkswagen has more motivation than ever to keep its name out of the negative press. The new Passat, launched in October 2015, may be the model to start rebuilding the brand’s reputation. Globally, the Passat is VW’s most popular model, and it’s also the brand’s oldest badge that’s still in production. In Australia, in the mediumsized car segment where the

Passat competes, the Toyota Camry dominates with a 50 per cent market share, although a big chunk of that is fleet sales. After the Camry’s finished at the sales trough, the best of the rest is the Mazda6, followed by the Subaru Liberty with the VW Passat in fourth. Fresh new competition also arrived in 2015 in the form of the new Hyundai Sonata and Kia Optima GT, but the Passat remains the go-to vehicle for those seeking some extra badge recognition in their mid-sized car for minimal extra expenditure. The Passat looks, feels and drives like it’s much more expensive than it is, which in itself will make people think twice about whether they

really need to spend an extra $10,000 on an SUV. Pricing starts at $39,400 drive away for the 132TSI sedan, ranging up to $51,600 for the 140TDI. Wagons are an extra $2000. The one we drove was the 132TSI Comfortline wagon, which starts at $47,140 drive away. Auto braking, active lane keeping and blind spot warning systems are available in this and the 140TDI Highline. On the road, the 132TSI’s

standout attribute is the engine’s peak torque of 250Nm from a low 1,250rpm. This quietly-generated torque at low revs is a traditional signifier of a luxury car, and is what sets the Passat apart from competitors such as the Mazda6, Subaru Liberty and Toyota Camry. In the ADR combined cycle test, the Passat 132TSI uses 6.0L/100km. We averaged 8.7l/100km around town. l April / May 2016 Horizons 51

Ford Everest

I

n October this year, Ford will stop making cars here and the Everest is part of its preparation. It’s a very different sevenseater from the outgoing Territory, though it will mean there’s still a seven-pew SUV in the Ford range going forward. Of course, the Everest is based on the major components of the Ranger fourwheel drive ute, with the key difference being Everest’s coil sprung rear suspension, where the Ranger has leaf springs. Given its underpinnings, the Everest is a highly capable off-road vehicle. It has good ground clearance at 225mm and wheel articulation over the rough stuff is excellent, as we found in the bush near Albany.

However, that wasn’t really a surprise. What was eye-opening was the build quality and overall refinement given it’s a vehicle made up predominantly of twincab ute bits. The 3.2-litre, five-cylinder turbo diesel, which is also in the Mazda BT50, is an excellent match for this vehicle. In the Everest, the engine does have slightly different tuning (143kW in the Everest against 147kW in the Ranger), but torque outputs are the same at 470Nm. That amount of torque puts the Everest near the top of its game (the Holden Colorado7 auto has 500Nm) – important given the Everest’s 3000kg braked towing capacity. Ford has pitched the Everest as a rival for the Toyota Prado,

Ford Everest specifications Price Engine Power Torque Claimed fuel economy CO 2 emissions ANCAP safety rating

not the other twin cab-based wagons mentioned above. That’s not a bad idea, because the Everest is expensive and on that front, closer to the Prado. The top of the range Everest Titanium costs $85,180 drive away (gasp), although the mid-spec Everest Trend is $67,500 while the entry level Everest Ambiente is $61,110. The Everest gets selectable drive modes to suit varying terrains, and there’s a locking

rear differential. It also excels with its safety kit, offering lane-keeping and automatic emergency assistance. Auto parking is also available, as is Ford’s excellent MyKey feature, which can limit the top speed for drivers using the specially programed ignition key. Though generally well equipped, we were surprised keyless entry wasn’t available, even on the Titanium variant. l

Jaguar F-Type V6S AWD

T

he most beautiful feline in the Jaguar litter now has the claws of all four paws pulling it down the road. Yes, Jaguar has managed to squash all-wheel drive under its stilleffortlessly beautiful F-Type. The rear-drive F-Type is renowned for its extraordinarily crisp handling and steering. In adding all wheel drive, Jaguar had to be very careful not to dilute this and introduce such abhorrent characteristics as power understeer and corrupted steering feel. Hence, Jag has tuned the allwheel drive system so it only engages the front wheels in adverse grip conditions, such as wet weather or other times where grip is in short supply.

Under brisk acceleration exiting a corner, you can feel the additional torque being drip-fed through the front end, but you have to be looking for it. Torque vectoring, by braking the inside wheel while cornering, also helps in keeping the cornering line and reducing its inclination to go wide. The only other time the all-wheel drive system is noticeable in normal driving is a slight twitchiness when manoeuvring at parking speeds. All-wheel drive is available in the 280kW V6S coupé, and 404kW V8 R coupé and convertible. The one we tried was a black V6S coupe. Allwheel drive can’t be had with the manual gearbox – every all-wheel drive gets the eight-

speed auto. Importantly, a rear camera is now standard on V6S and R models. Externally, the differences between the all-wheel drive and rear-drive versions are a slightly larger bonnet bulge in the all-wheel drive models, repositioned bonnet vents and some subtle badging. All-wheel drive is not the only addition to the F-Type for 2016. Fans of theatrics will love that the switchable active exhaust is

now standard on all F-Types. That means you can either drive quietly, or open the flaps and let out some extra crackle and blare. It’s the most pointless yet infectiously entertaining feature we’ve ever seen on a car. Also new for 2016 is electric power steering, replacing the previous hydraulic system. The cheapest F-Type will cost you $131,000 drive away. All-wheel drive versions start at $187,900 for the V6S. l April / May 2016 Horizons 53

What’s new

The latest news from the motoring world

Audi TTS tones down Audi was so keen to reduce weight in its latest TTS sports car, it replaced some of the copper electrical wiring with aluminium wire. Plus, every body panel on the TT is made of aluminium except for the movable rear spoiler, which is made of steel because of the forces it bears. Overall, the weight savings were 45kg. The TTS’s clever all-wheel drive system can also send more power to the rear wheels — up to 100 per cent — before you accelerate out of a corner to limit understeer on the exit, based on the electronics’ analysis of how quickly you turn into it.

Bueller, Bueller?

T

he movie that depicted the perfect day for a generation of teenagers turns 30 years old this year. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, which spawned several classic quotes that have become part of our lexicon, is a classic teen movie about a high school kid who uses everything at his disposal to wag school, borrow a Ferrari 250GT California and get the girl. The most memorable scene for car enthusiasts was when the vintage Ferrari crashed through a window. To the relief of many, the vehicle in this scene was a replica. Last year, a real, unrestored 250GT California sold for more than $25 million.

WA bucks sales trend Western Australia was the black sheep of new car sales in 2015. Australia-wide, cars left showrooms in record numbers, with 1,155,408 overall sales making for a 3.8 per cent increase compared with national sales

in 2014. However, in WA sales declined by 7.9 per cent to 106,188 cars — the biggest decrease of all states and territories. That’s over 9000 fewer cars sold than in 2014. The decline wasn’t spread evenly across the market segments in WA though, with passenger and commercial vehicles generally declining while SUV sales increased.

Australia’s Best Cars In 2015, Volkswagen admitted to using so-called ‘defeat devices’ to evade clean air standards in several million Volkswagen Group vehicles worldwide. This affected the ability for the Australia’s Best Cars program to accurately or fairly assess VW Group vehicles against each criterion in the program, and as a result, no Volkswagen, Audi or Skoda vehicles were able to be considered in the 2015 program. Details of how the remaining vehicles scored can be found at australiasbestcars.com.au. Alternatively, the Australia’s Best Cars magazine is available at RAC Member Service Centres. Ask the car doctor

Our experts answer your questions

left: The 2012 Mazda BT50 and the 2012 Ford Ranger are essentially the same vehicle (except for the body shape) so why are the service intervals different for both?

You can be a winner

Q

I have a Mazda BT50 2012 model and my friend has a Ford Ranger 2012 model. These two vehicles are basically the same except for the body shape and both were built at the same plant in Thailand. Why is it that the service interval on the BT50 is every 10,000km, yet the service interval on the Ranger is every 15,000km?

Gary Atkinson, Pinjarra

A:

Although the vehicles are similar, it is the decision of each manufacturer on what is required with the servicing. In this case Ford has specified a slightly longer service interval for distance, although both specify servicing be carried out every 12 months. Both Ford and Mazda were ambiguous in their explanations, although it’s possible that with the Ford Ranger being more popular as a fleet vehicle, its longer interval may be related to gaining a competitive advantage in this segment of the market.

Q

My car has developed an annoying tendency to shudder when I ease the brakes on at speed, especially on the freeway. Initial feedback from my dealer was to replace the front discs as they are warped and this may solve the issue. Do steel brake discs warp under normal operating conditions in modern cars? Surely there is a better option than spending over $500 on a “may solve”? Is the problem the discs, the pads, the disc brake rotors, the disc brake-pad dust build up on the discs or a combination of all these?

John Hearne, Hillarys

A:

The cause of shuddering brakes is commonly misdiagnosed as warped disc rotors, which is rare in modern cars under normal operating conditions. It is more likely that friction material from the brake pads has been unevenly deposited onto the disc. However, in this case

we would suggest getting a second opinion from another workshop. All RAC members are entitled to one free fault diagnosis per membership year. To utilise this benefit, call 13 17 03.

Q

I own a 2000 Toyota Camry. There are a couple of problems with the air conditioning system, though the engine runs like a dream. Recently small pieces of foam have blown through the air vents. Does this matter and do they need to be replaced? Also, an odour comes from the vents when the air conditioning is on during lower outside temperatures. What could be causing this odour?

Elizabeth McTaggart, Duncraig

A:

The foam may be the padding around the air vents, further down the dash. This tends to happen with aging of a vehicle. Over time, bacteria will grow within the air conditioning system and can cause a bad smelling odour. To eliminate this odour, we would suggest replacing the pollen filter and having a sanitiser sprayed through the air conditioning system.

2010 hailstorm a reminder to prepare early Each year in Western Australia storms hit the southern half of the state, often causing major destruction. While WA’s storm season typically runs from May to October, the March 2010 hail storm, which caused around $1.1 billion worth of damage to Perth homes and cars, is a reminder that damaging storms can occur at any time.

In the aftermath of that storm event, RAC Insurance wrote-off around 9000 vehicles — more than the amount normally written off in one year. If you’re at home when a storm is approaching, park all cars under shelter if possible and secure loose objects outdoors. If there is lightning, unplug appliances and avoid using your landline telephone. If you’re driving when a storm hits, turn your

headlights on, slow down and keep a safe following distance from other vehicles. Take extra care when driving around corners and only use cold air to demist your windscreen. If visibility is poor, pull over to a safe location and turn on your hazard lights. For critical assistance, contact the State Emergency Service on 132 500. For more storm preparation tips and what to do if a storm hits, visit rac.com. au/storm or dfes.wa.gov.au. If you need to make a claim, visit rac.com.au/claims or call 13 17 03.

Lights are on but no one’s home

I

t’s no surprise that an obviously vacant home is a beacon for burglars. Lights off, rubbish bins left out and uncollected mail can make a home an easy target. But often an empty home left to give the impression of being occupied can also be a dead giveaway for experienced burglars. Results of interviews with police detainees featured in an Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC) report show burglars were aware of attempts to make a home appear occupied. Leaving lights on along with a radio or television for many hours at night signalled no one was actually home to many burglars. If you are planning on going away these school holidays try to find someone

reliable to live in your home while you’re gone. If that’s not possible, leave a car in your driveway and ask a trusted neighbour to collect rubbish bins and mail. If using timers on lamps and appliances, set them to turn off at a reasonable hour. With home alarms being the second biggest deterrent to burglars after barking dogs, you can ensure future holidays are worry-free by investing in a quality alarm system. A home alarm is a security guard you can engage any time you’re away, and almost 50 per cent of burglars in the AIC report stated that working home alarms were an effective deterrent. To inquire about an alarm system for your home, contact RAC Security on 1300 132 735 or visit rac.com.au/security.

Electric bike winner Kim Parks won a SmartMotion eCity e-bike for taking part in RAC’s e-bike Trial, which was conducted last year. The SmartMotion bike is the same model used by participants during the trial. Entrants told us in 25 words or less why they wanted an e-bike. Kim’s winning caption was:

“Because you can help reduce traffic congestion and pollution, be healthy, yet arrive in nearly the same time without so much sweat”.

A Sydney Harbour cruise, snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef, watching a sunset over Uluru or taking a scenic plane ride over the snowfields of Queenstown – these are just four of the more than 2000 holiday adventures RAC members can book at a discounted rate at rac.com.au/experienceoz. Members can enjoy up to 30 per cent off a wide range of leisure activities

across Australia and NZ all year round. You can search for activities by region or city within Australia, such as the Gold Coast, Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and Perth and also in New Zealand including Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington, Queenstown and many more. Stonehenge at Esperance

The first known burial was in January 1830, a year after Governor Stirling declared the Swan River Colony. The site contains seven different cemeteries and was used until 1899 as the main burial ground for the Perth area. Guided tours are available.

Weird & wonderful attractions Principality of Hutt River In 1970, Leonard Casley declared his wheat farm north of Geraldton an independent sovereign state, no longer part of WA, and proclaimed himself Prince Leonard in response to a government dispute over wheat quotas. The quirky fiefdom has its own currency and flag and attracts tourists from around the world. The Australian Government does not legally recognise the area.

Gnomesville This extraordinary collection of gnomes in the Ferguson Valley began as a protest against land being taken to build a roundabout. Initially a single gnome kept a silent vigil on site and soon more appeared. The gnome ‘hamlet’ is now in a new location nearby and contains many thousands of gnomes from around Australia and the world.

Gwalia ghost town Gwalia near Leonora in the Goldfields was a thriving mining settlement in the late 1890s. After the mine closed in 1963 it became a virtual ghost town. Today the abandoned buildings have become a historical precinct and provide an interesting insight into the town’s past. Herbert Hoover, who later became the USA’s 31st President, was the first general manager of the Sons of Gwalia Mine.

Tin Horse Highway What began as a campaign to promote the Kulin Bush Races in the Eastern Wheatbelt is now an attraction in its own right. In paddocks along the road to the Kulin race track and other roads in the area you’ll find many colourful tin horses. They’ve been appearing for the past 20 years. You can take the Tin Horse Tourist Route via Kulin to visit Wave Rock.

Oakabella Homestead Oakabella has become known as WA’s most haunted house. Built in the 1850s, there are a total of 13 rooms in the sprawling homestead, which is open for tours during the day. For those brave enough, there are also ghostly night tours. Oakabella Homestead is approximately 30km north of Geraldton. Cowaramup Cows Along with a large number of real bovines, Cowaramup in the Margaret River region is home to a herd of 42 life-size fibreglass cows. They can be seen along the main street, in parks and scattered around the town centre. Each July the cows are honoured with a cow town fair known as Deja Moo. East Perth Cemeteries East Perth Cemeteries provide a fascinating insight into the beginnings of the Swan River Colony and the lives of WA’s early settlers.

Cunderdin Museum earthquake simulator Cunderdin Museum is an extensive and well visited museum filled with artefacts showcasing the history of the area and also boasts WA’s only earthquake simulator room. The simulator is part of an exhibition commemorating the severe earthquake that hit nearby Meckering in 1968. The Meckering quake measured 6.9 on the Richter scale. Esperance Stonehenge This full-size replica of the UK’s Stonehenge stands in the field of an Esperance farm. The site replicates what the Stonehenge site would have looked like around 1950BC. Esperance pink granite has been used in the structure, which is made up of 137 individual stones some weighing up to 50 tonnes. Esperance Stonehenge is aligned with the winter and summer solstice. Nullarbor Links Golf Course The world’s longest golf course runs from Kalgoorlie in WA to Ceduna in South Australia with its 18 holes located in towns and roadhouses along the way. The course stretches a total of 1365 kilometres. On the WA side there are tees located at Kalgoorlie, Kambalda, Norseman, Fraser Range, Balladonia, Caiguna and Cocklebiddy.
