State Budget will set the journey and the destination must be clear The upcoming State Budget, the first for this WA Government, is an opportunity to deliver against its 2017 election commitments, and to also set the path for delivering the priorities the state urgently needs. RAC believes these priorities need to be delivered in the context of also providing the community with the certainty it urgently requires. RAC members and the community need certainty on how the governance of road safety will be improved, and the projects that will be funded by the State Government to help save lives and stop serious injuries on our roads. The State Government’s management of the Road Trauma Trust Account needs to be more transparent and the State Budget needs to guarantee that all the funds are spent or allocated every financial year, with the full list of projects and programs made publicly available. Importantly the State Budget must also fund the government’s election commitments to create and implement a Regional Enforcement Unit to target the factors contributing to the regional road toll, and also the important commitment to ensure WA Police have the resources to significantly increase the volume of drug testing of drivers on regional roads. The state’s road maintenance backlog, estimated to be around $845 million, also needs to be addressed and funding, including from Royalties for Regions, needs to be allocated to repair dangerous roads and to improve safety. RAC’s priority is for the State Budget to commence the process of reducing the road maintenance backlog by at least 30 per cent during this current term of government. The community also needs certainty in managing congestion. This includes confirming funding for the State Government’s transport commitments, such as the election commitment to deliver the Thornlie rail line extension, and the other
transport projects that will provide RAC members and the community with better mobility options including public transport, smarter and more efficient roads, and cycling infrastructure. A critical message from the RAC to the State Government is to ensure that the State Budget does not “gouge” motorists through the hip pocket by increasing motoring costs. This is because the cost of motoring remains a high priority issue for RAC members. Costs and charges imposed by the State Government, such as registration, compulsory third party insurance, including no fault, and licence fees are levied regardless of the number of kilometres driven and they must be capped at or below the rate of inflation. RAC believes the State Budget also provides the opportunity to confirm and guarantee that Third Party Insurance fund dividends will be directed to road safety programs and initiatives and ensure transparent reporting of the Motor Vehicle (Catastrophic Injuries) Fund. RAC also holds the view that the Insurance Commission of WA must remain State Government owned and CTP insurance must not be privatised. The next State Budget must set the journey ahead; the destination needs to be clear and concise, and the map needs to outline how the projects planned and promised will be funded, when they will commence, and when they will be delivered.

Join the discussion about the RAC and the magazine a car approaching its end of life. I have owned a Ford Fairlane AU11 Ghia 4lt Silver Auto sedan 2002 since it was new. It has done just over 540,000km. I service it regularly every 10,000km, instead of the recommended 15,000km. Yesterday I had my 540,000km service carried out and there was nothing abnormal that required any further repair. If you look after your vehicle, drive it responsibly and service it regularly, there is no reason you cannot extend the life of your vehicle.
Our winning letter Be aware of bus lanes
Interstate purchases
Continental journey
I had the unfortunate experience of being a first responder to a motorcycle accident on Ranford Road in Canning Vale. A motorcyclist was riding in the bus lane, as was permitted as part of an extended government trial. When a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction turned right in front of two lanes of standstill traffic, right in front of him, he was thrown a significant distance. The motorcyclist was sore but survived mostly unscathed. As a rider myself, I believe this trial has been mostly successful. However, few people I have talked to are aware that bicycles and motorcycles can ride in some bus lanes. One dashcam video I saw online was of a police car being hit in a near identical scenario. People only expect a tall bus to be visible over the top of traffic and wilfully turn in front without having clear sight. The community must be more vigilant for some of our most vulnerable road users.
We purchased a 1995 Mitsubishi Pajero in Tasmania, due to its exceptional condition, despite its old age. We believed we would have only a few hassles getting the vehicle’s rego changed over once it arrived in Perth. Wrong. It was a costly exercise especially when there is any work required, as there is a “before” and “after” inspection cost involved. The most frustrating cost incurred was for the removal of tinting from the entire vehicle as it was deemed too dark. This cost $272. In total, our costs amounted to $1443. A vehicle inspection in one Australian state can be very different to an inspection in another Australian state.
I read with interest the letter (April/May Horizons) about the Honda N360. My love for cars started with, not the N360, but the Honda N600. At that time, I was living and working in Sydney. When I returned to WA, I decided to drive back in the car. I encouraged a friend to share the drive and off we went. Before reaching Hay in NSW the muffler blew. As we drove to the nearest garage the ignition burnt out. We left the following morning with a Castrol tin wrapped around the muffler and a new Holden ignition switch tied to the dash with a piece of string. After that nothing fazed us. My little Honda crossed the continent on one cylinder, a blown muffler and a Holden ignition. Talk about a tough little piece of machinery.

The survey, which asked members to nominate risky roads in their areas, attracted more than 6000 nominations from both metropolitan and regional WA. “There is over 187,000 kilometres of road in Western Australia and no one knows it better than the people who drive, ride, cycle or walk on it every day,” said RAC General Manager Corporate Affairs Will Golsby. “WA has an $845 million road maintenance backlog and also one of the country’s worst road fatality rates. “Last year, 194 Western Australians died on our roads, with many more seriously injured. “Our road fatality rate has gone from being one of the best in the country to one of the worst, with the effects of road trauma estimated to cost WA $6.6 billion each year.” The RAC Risky Roads campaign empowers community members to voice their concerns about dangerous roads and intersections, so we can work together with relevant authorities to address the issues raised and try to save lives. The survey can make a real difference in local communities – following the 2014 Risky Roads campaign, eight of the top 10 roads and six of the top 10 intersections named have had work planned, committed, started or completed. When every second counts Jordan Dickinson joined the crew of the second RAC Rescue helicopter located in Bunbury last year and is an air crewman, managing confined area landings, winching operations and assisting the paramedic and pilot when needed. He also works with the RAC Rescue helicopter’s state-of-theart forward-looking infrared or ‘FLIR’ camera that can help locate people in distress at sea or in remote areas. Mr Dickinson manages the communications systems and processes that enable the RAC Rescue helicopter to find its target destination as quickly as possible and prepare the crew for the scene that will confront them when they arrive. While flying to an emergency Mr Dickinson says the crew can be in contact with many different emergency services personnel on the ground. “We liaise with voluntary paramedics and Police, as well as report to the Department of Fire and Emergency
Services – they’re all a massive help when we’re out on a job,” Mr Dickinson says. “They can provide information such as the landing site, whether there are wires in the area and whether the paramedic will have some assistance on the ground. Police will block roads and keep the general scene safe. “We went to a job with a car that had rolled down south and ended up finding where they were by liaising with units on the ground and we landed on a small bridge. We were lucky enough to have an area where we could land and retrieve them.” Funded by the State Government and sponsored by RAC, the two RAC Rescue helicopters based in Perth and Bunbury are managed by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services. Find out more about the RAC Rescue helicopters at rac.com.au/racrescue.

Albany switches to e-bikes Albany’s challenging hills have proven to be no barrier for keen e-biking enthusiasts who took part in RAC’s most recent e-bike trial. During the trial, participants slashed the number of car trips they made by using their e-bikes instead, and they’ve kept that momentum going. The group went from travelling by car for 85 per cent of their trips to and from work to 47 per cent on average over the 10week trial period and 41 per cent after it ended. In fact, most participants enjoyed riding their e-bikes so much that 14 of the 20 went on to buy their e-bikes after the trial ended. “Nearly 1170 e-bike trips
Fuel myth Is there a difference in the quality of fuel sold at different fuel retailers?
were made, clearly demonstrating how e-bikes can help overcome common barriers to cycling,” said Anne Still, RAC General Manager Public Policy. Trial participant Sue-Ellen Shaw said she has always been an avid fan of professional cycling but never owned a bike of her own for a number of reasons, including not considering herself fit enough to cycle. “The e-bike has given me the confidence to go further and challenge myself,” Ms Shaw said. “I enjoy riding to work and arrive feeling more energised and ready to face the day.”
Before the trial, none of the participants cycled to work. During the trial, almost half of all their commuting trips were made by e-bike. This level of cycling was sustained after the trial ended, with a massive 57 per cent of trips being made by e-bike and regular bicycle – 51 per cent with an e-bike and six per cent with a regular bicycle. RAC partnered with the City of Albany and the Department of Sport and Recreation for the trial to help increase awareness and usage of e-bikes, and boost cycling in WA’s regional cities. This trial builds on the success of the RAC e-bike trial, which took place in Perth in 2015.

All fuel sold in WA must comply with national fuel standards. No matter where the fuel is sourced from, whether a local refinery or overseas, it must comply with the Fuel Quality Standards Act 2000. More than 90 per cent of fuel sold in WA comes from the state’s only oil refinery in Kwinana. Some fuel companies introduce additives to their premium fuels, however these additives don’t improve the inherent quality of the fuel.

Driving home the impact of road trauma
Emergency services crews worked quickly to save a distressed and severely injured young passenger trapped inside a car following a serious crash, prising open its roof with the Jaws of Life. Fortunately for more than 6800 young students who witnessed this scene, it was all part of a dramatisation staged as part of the RAC bstreetsmart event held at Perth Arena in March. The annual road safety event
exposes students in Years 10 to 12 to a simulated crash scene enabling them to experience first-hand the enormous number of people and services involved when a serious crash occurs and the extent to which people are affected by it. Students hear stories from those personally affected by road trauma, those who have lost loved ones and also from frontline emergencyservices personnel who regularly deal
with confronting road crashes. RAC bstreetsmart, in its seventh year, is a key part of RAC’s youth road safety education strategy. In 2016, drivers aged 17 to 24 accounted for only 11 per cent of the population and yet represented 21 per cent of road fatalities. RAC bstreetsmart is presented by RAC, WA Police, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services, St John Ambulance and Royal Perth Hospital.

As I get older I am conscious that I may be losing to some extent my eyesight, my balance, my hearing, but I’m not losing my mind or my insight into my health problems. Call me old-fashioned, but I’m accustomed to the old ways where older people were treated with respect. And I’m not happy when I’m discussing a health problem with a professional and they cut me off because either they have little interest in what I have to say, or they appear to be dismissive of my perspectives on my health. I wonder how many other older people identify with my sentiments here. I believe there will be others who also find it really awful to be treated as though they’re invisible or foolish. So right away from the time I entered the waiting room at Brad’s audiology

bout the size of Victoria and Tasmania combined, the Kimberley region, in the far north-west corner of Australia, is a magnet for nature lovers with its soaring rock formations, abundant flora and fauna and stunning gorges. Our Kimberley family adventure begins in the upmarket beachside town of Broome where we pick up an Apollo Overlander four-wheel drive camper that will serve as both transport and home for four people over three weeks. What the Overlander lacks in creature comforts, it makes up for with the high
road clearance and rugged features needed to cope with the variable terrain and occasional river crossing encountered on the Gibb River Road. No visit to the Kimberley is complete without a close up view of the spectacular, beehive-shaped sandstone domes at the Bungle Bungle-Purnululu National Park. After stocking up with supplies, we head off on the 800km bitumen drive towards Kununurra along the Great Northern Highway, stopping overnight at Fitzroy Crossing before turning off down the 53km access road to the Bungle Bungle visitor centre. The bumpy drive is
worth it and leads to short walks through the unique domes and to Cathedral Gorge, a huge natural amphitheatre with outstanding acoustics that at the time of our visit is being used by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra for a series of concerts. We also time our visit perfectly to Echidna Chasm, a spectacularly narrow gorge, catching the fiery hues created as the midday sun filters through a metrewide gap between soaring rock walls. Back on the bitumen, we enjoy a quick tour of the Warmun Art Centre, run by the local Aboriginal community and featuring paintings by leading Kimberley

artists. Further north and we head to the bustling town of Kununurra – the last opportunity for almost two weeks to stock up on supermarket supplies.
On the Gibb River Road The turn-off to the Gibb River Road is 53km from Kununurra, and the sealed road continues another 33km to the world-famous El Questro, a working cattle station-cum-upmarket wilderness retreat. The smooth bitumen is a luxury we won’t see again until a sealed stretch at the other end, near Derby. With everything from five-star units to shady campsites, El Questro is our introduction to the first of many short bush walks to the spectacular gorges. These include the spellbinding Emma Gorge and Zebedee Springs, a
permanent thermal spring in a relaxing rock pool setting. Back on the Gibb River Road, we drop tyre pressures and restrict top speed to 60km/h to provide a more comfortable and safer journey over the rougher corrugations.
Discover the Mitchell Plateau Another 200km along is the Kalumburu Road turn-off, which provides access north to the spectacular Mitchell Plateau. It’s a bumpy five-hour detour, but the rewards include magnificent Aboriginal rock art at the King Edward River crossing. We also pass through a dense forest of Livistona palm trees, some of which are up to 300 years old, and spot a large frill-necked lizard clinging motionless to a tree trunk. The two-hour hike from the Mitchell

it’s the perfect spot to rest for a couple of days. Once we are feeling more energetic, we tackle the challenging, hour-long hike into the magnificent Manning Gorge, where highlights include plunging into deep water from a high rocky platform, and spotting a Mertens’ water monitor sunbaking on the rocks.
Mornington highlights A further 150km down the Gibb River Road we take a detour to the Mornington Wildlife Sanctuary. It is another pristine bush camp location at the end of a memorable two-hour drive along a winding track dotted with huge boab trees and termite mounds. The highlight at Mornington is a 4km-return canoe trip into Dimond Gorge, paddling through towering, red ▼
River campground to the unique, multitier waterfall is hard work but incredibly beautiful. We leave at sunrise to beat the heat, and the soft morning light playing on the majestic cliffs and gorges proves perfect for photography. On the Gibb, we make a late evening run for the Mt Barnett Roadhouse, one of just two general stores along the road, while enjoying another fantastic Western Australian sunset. We keep an eye out for nocturnal wildlife, but the main concern is stray cattle from nearby stations chewing grass along the side of the road. With a flowing river close by, it’s no surprise the Manning Gorge campground behind the roadhouse is busy with campers when we arrive. With a water park for the kids and a well-earned break from camp duties for the grown ups,
Planning your trip Heading into any remote Outback region requires more planning and preparation than the usual self-drive holiday. Longer distances between food and fuel stops makes it necessary to be largely self-sufficient and prepared for almost anything. Limited mobile phone coverage necessitates alternative communication options such as a satellite phone, which can be rented. Off-road maps, either printed or as part of a portable GPS unit, help keep you on track.
Best time to visit Most overland travellers make the trip during the slightly cooler dry season period around May–August. June / July 2017 Horizons 21

rock formations and enjoying a lunch stop at a small sandy cove. Amazingly, we have the place to ourselves. The final stretch includes a stop-off at picturesque Bell Gorge, a popular water hole and one of the most slippery, with moss-covered rocks ensuring a thrilling, slip ’n slide entry from the shoreline. Further on, Windjana Gorge provides a close-up encounter with freshwater crocodiles as well as thousands of flying bats during a sunset viewing. Nearby Tunnel Creek is another must-see, where we wade with torches through the 750m passage buried in the Napier Range, hoping not to disturb any slivery creatures in the murky water. It proves more fun than the ghost train at Luna Park and what’s more, it’s free.

A fitting finale Back in Broome, we wash off the red dirt at the popular Cable Beach Caravan Park before joining the four-wheel drive hordes for the famous sunset drive along Cable Beach, watching tourists ride by on camel trains while enjoying take-away fish and chips. We round off our Kimberley adventure with a few days at Cape Leveque on the Dampier Peninsula. An often bumpy, three-hour drive north of Broome, it’s one of those magical Western Australian coastal spots where glowing red rock meets pristine white sand and clear turquoise sea. At Kooljaman Resort, one of many Aboriginal-run campgrounds on the peninsula, we nab a prized beachside

hut complete with bush camping luxuries such as a private thatched hut and shower, not to mention priceless coastal views. Also recommended is a four-wheel drive tag-along-tour with local Bardi man Brian Lee, where we cut a path along the soft white sand to unspoilt Hunter Creek and enjoy a barbecue lunch of freshly-caught mud crabs. All up, our trusty Apollo camper clocked up 3700km, with around half of that on the dirt. Three weeks is sufficient time to enjoy many Gibb River Road highlights, plus a taste of the Dampier Peninsula, and we leave with great memories and a desire to return to this very special part of Australia. l

The Apollo Overlander Based on a Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series wagon, the Apollo Overlander is perfect for families wanting to get off the beaten track and experience a self-drive holiday through remote, outback regions such as the Kimberley. The four-wheel drive campervan covers the camping essentials including a roof-top tent and annexe that sleeps four, a 45-litre fridge, portable
gas stove and 20-litre freshwater tank. Items required for sleeping, cooking and eating are included in the daily rental fee or available at additional cost. The vehicle’s long range, 130-litre fuel tank reduces the need to carry extra fuel. Apollo also supplies an EPIRB device for emergency situations such as vehicle breakdown.

WA is blessed with many fantastic destinations off the highway blacktop, so it’s worth considering whether your next vehicle should allow for off-road adventures.
Ray Cully
There are a number of off-road vehicle options. An all-wheel drive soft roader is great if you’re more inclined to travel on graded gravel roads but if you plan to take on the Canning Stock Route, you’ll need a four-wheel drive with high ground clearance to tackle tough terrain. While the best advice for new four-wheel drive owners is to sign up for an accredited training course, here are a few key tips to get you thinking about driving in the dirt.
Buy the basic equipment
Tackling sand and mud For your first off-road adventures, the extra resistance of soft sand is a good teacher for how your four-wheel drive responds to gearing, throttle and steering inputs. You’ll need to lower tyre pressures to help extend the tyre’s footprint length and distribute the vehicle’s weight. Lower pressure also allows the tyre to mould itself to the terrain being driven for better traction. In winter, mud might look like fun, but it’s grinding paste for your vehicle. Unless you’re thinking of competition four-wheel driving or have the desire and ability to regularly and thoroughly clean down your vehicle – don’t play in the mud.
When it comes to water crossings, never forget you’re in a vehicle not a boat. A warning about water When it comes to water crossings, never forget you’re in a vehicle not a boat. Grab a stick to probe and test the base. Walk the crossing first – across in the path of the driver’s wheels and back in the passenger’s. Check depth, condition of the base and flow rate. If you’re having trouble standing in the water flow, don’t try to drive through it.
Sit correctly Sit upright and your wrists should comfortably rest on the top of the steering wheel without you leaning forward. Your legs should never have to extend to operate brake or throttle. Always keep your thumbs outside the wheel while firmly gripping at the quarter-to-three position.
Get the right tools Specialist four-wheel drive shops can provide advice in determining the best accessories for your vehicle and which modifications won’t put you on the wrong side of the law or compromise your insurance policy. It is important to avoid fitting too many accessories and exceeding your vehicle’s legal carrying capacity or just carrying too much gear. This can be a hard thing to balance, especially if you plan to travel to remote locations where you need to carry adequate fuel, water, food, basic vehicle spares and tools to fit them plus reliable communications like a satellite phone, RHF radio and EPIRB, as well as camping equipment. Once you’re all set up you can fully explore the beauty of our national parks and Crown land but always respect locked gates, track closures, private property and native title lands that can only be entered with appropriate permits and permission. And always four-wheel drive for the future – take care of the environment and make sure every destination remains beautiful for your next trip beyond the city limits. ▼
Kit out your fourbie with some basic equipment including a shovel and quality snatch strap, plus a reliable compressor and an accurate tyre gauge. The humble shovel will clear away sand build-up in front of sunken tyres and help get you moving again. The snatch strap is a vital part of any four-wheel driving recovery kit. Used correctly, it can effectively pull a stuck vehicle out of trouble. Used incorrectly, the same strap could damage your vehicle or cause serious injury.

Building the crash-proof car
Could car crashes soon be a distant memory? Fast-emerging technology means that the crash-proof car is closer than you may imagine. by Toby Hagon

Lane keeping aids With this technology, cameras monitor lane markings and warn the driver when they are wandering from their lane. Advanced systems integrate lane departure warning with a mild self-steering system, which aims to keep the car in the middle of the lane and assist the driver in steering. More advanced semi-autonomous cars already use more active steering for handsfree driving over short distances, however, so far, all cars require the driver to have their hands on the wheel. These systems are far from perfect, often temporarily disconnecting over large intersections or on country roads, where lane markings may be non-existent or poorly marked, but lane keeping systems will get smarter and more reliable.
Smart headlights Vision systems are a key focus for car makers as they improve the level of information delivered to the driver. LED headlights (and, in the case of the Audi R8, laser lights) can illuminate more than half a kilometre down the road. The latest technology can also direct the beam through a corner and block it out to oncoming road users, allowing high beams
to be used longer and reducing glare for other motorists. Teamed with advanced night vision systems – such as those used in top-end luxury cars – it provides an unparalleled view of what’s ahead. In the future, such data could be projected on a head-up display, pinpointing upcoming obstacles and better highlighting them to the driver.
Autonomous emergency braking (AEB) AEB is commonplace in luxury cars and is quickly filtering its way through mainstream models, including the Mazda3 and Toyota C-HR. It can automatically apply the brakes to avoid other vehicles ahead. There are, however, different levels of intelligence. Basic AEB setups tend to use a single method of detection, usually a camera, and typically operate up to about 40km/h. More advanced AEB systems use multiple sensors, often combining radar with forward-facing cameras to work at freeway speeds. Some luxury cars, including the new Audi A4 and Q7, monitor cars coming towards them and can apply the brakes to stop a driver from turning in front of other cars.
Mood sensing Car makers are increasingly alert to the driver’s state of mind; someone who is frustrated or angry may make poor or ill-timed decisions on the road, leading to crashes. Fatigue detection systems are commonplace in new cars – some are as simple as a two-hour timer encouraging a break; others monitor steering and braking inputs for signs of drowsiness and then warn the driver. Mercedes-Benz and Hyundai are each developing technology that monitors a driver’s state. By assessing breathing rate, posture and even heart rate the car can determine whether a driver is stressed, for example, or even if a heart attack is imminent.
Emergency services alert Mobile phones aren’t usually associated with safe driving, but they do allow emergency services to be called more quickly after a crash, potentially saving
▼
I
magine a world where car crashes simply do not happen. Or, at least, they were as rare and shocking as plane crashes. It may seem unrealistic, yet that world may not be as far away as you think. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class, BMW 5-Series and Volvo S90 each have groundbreaking crash avoidance technology. These systems not only use radar and cameras to monitor traffic and automatically brake but can also steer around trouble, adjust the seatbelts and prepare other safety features for an impact. As futuristic as it seems, this is only the very early stages of crash avoidance technology, which promises to dramatically reduce road trauma, and – one day – make cars all but crash proof. Here are some of the current technologies and what we could see in the near future along that road to the crash-proof car.

Utilising a connected phone, the system can automatically dial 000 after a crash, further reducing response times. In other countries, cars send detailed data about the collision, readying emergency teams. In the future that could extend to automatically sending photos of the surrounding scene so more specialist help – be it rescue teams or a fire crew – can be deployed sooner.
Pedestrian alert Pedestrians and motorists don’t always make good partners on the road. In fact, about 13 per cent of the 1200 off-road fatalities in Australia are pedestrians. Technology could help to reverse this trend. In developing vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure technology Honda has explored the idea of vehicleto-pedestrian technology. Using short-
range communication, cars could talk to nearby smart phones and, if a collision is imminent, the system could not only warn the driver but also the pedestrian.

Already Tesla is collating data from tens of thousands of its cars around technologies,” says Mr Forrest. ●
REDUCING HUMAN ERROR represents a significant opportunity to reduce deaths and injuries. A World Economic Forum white paper published last year predicts that 902,000 lives could be saved globally over 10 years as autonomous tech is introduced to vehicles. However, Mr Forrest cautions motorists to understand the limitations of these innovations. “The abilities of some vehicle safety features are sometimes overstated, and their limitations are not made as obvious as they arguably should,” he says. For now, the most effective safety system in a car is a competent and alert driver. CIPE0169
Since 2007 Volvo has had a target of zero fatalities or serious injuries in one of its new cars by 2020. Its “Vision 2020” program focuses on crash avoidance and autonomous technology to meet that target. Most crashes include some form of human error, says Mr Forrest, so the prospect of a car that doesn’t get distracted or hot-headed or irrational holds plenty of appeal. “Removing the factor of human error does present an opportunity to reduce crashes, however there is still much work needed to be done to achieve this ideal,” says Mr Forrest. He adds that the push towards autonomy on our roads

Whale swim trial continues A trial at Ningaloo Marine Park allowing groups to swim with humpback whales is continuing this year. The first phase of the trial, which ran from August to November 2016, was deemed a success with more than 1600 people getting into the water with the humpbacks as they migrated along the Ningaloo coast. The Department of Parks and Wildlife worked with licensed operators to ensure swimmers were at minimal risk and the whales were also not disrupted. The humpback swim is the latest outstanding nature-based experience on Australia’s Coral Coast. In addition to enjoying the spectacular reef, visitors to Ningaloo can swim with whale sharks and manta rays and see dolphins, dugongs and turtles.

The Midlands Road wildflowers If you’re heading north of Perth to view wildflowers this spring, consider the Midlands Road as an alternative inland route to taking the Indian Ocean Drive or the Brand Highway. You’ll pass through Coorow’s hinterland, a well-known wildflower area that is home to the 1.2km Bart Mailey Wildflower Walk and an alternative 1.3km loop walk at Bart’s Lookout. To cover a larger area of wildflowers, take the Midlands Road north to Coorow and Mingenew and then carry on to Coalseam Conservation Park and Mullewa. You can then loop back heading south via Gutha, where the wreath flower is common and carry on through Perenjori and Dalwallinu towards Perth. Look out for RACWA facebook #bloomalerts. Seeing the light Field of Light Uluru is the realisation of a 24-year dream for artist Bruce Munro, who has transformed part of Australia’s ‘red centre’ into a canvas of epic proportions. Story Deb Eccleston

luru. The literal heart of Australia. Cared for by the traditional owners, Anangu, for tens of thousands of years. Something about this spiritual heartland – a feeling, for want of a better word – defies explanation. British artist Bruce Munro experienced that feeling more than two decades ago, and it was so profound it triggered within him a passion for artistic expression. Despite his love of art and drawing, Mr Munro didn’t have faith in his ability to make a career out of it. After graduating from Bristol Polytechnic with a bachelor degree in fine art in 1982, Mr Munro worked in an art gallery until wanderlust led him to Australia for what was intended to be a six-month holiday. What he didn’t anticipate was that while here, he would realise he could earn a living from his passion for light. For Mr Munro, light became the medium to express his thoughts and ideas. “Light for me is like paint and canvas to a painter,” he said. “Light is a medium that describes our reality and there’s something very poetic about that. I love the ephemeral nature of my work – you can flick a switch and it’s gone.” During his time in Australia, Mr Munro developed illuminated displays for retailers and exhibitions. In 1992 he visited Uluru as a swansong, before returning to the United Kingdom. That trip was the turning point in his art and provided the inspiration for his

first exhibition in the UK some years later. “Field of Light is a reflection of what I felt when I saw Uluru for the first time. It was a life-changing moment.” With journals filled with drawings of his impressions of Uluru, and ideas that wouldn’t be realised for more than 20 years, Mr Munro left Australia inspired to take a leap of faith and work as an artist, full time. More than a decade later, his first Field of Light exhibition opened at London’s Victoria & Albert Museum, followed by a larger iteration in a field behind his home. “We left it up for a year to test it, and people began popping up at odd times to visit it, and that’s when I began to notice that the gentle movement of the lights, not shimmering but almost breathing, created a response.” Despite his success in the UK and abroad, Mr Munro yearned to bring to life the drawings and ideas he’d had in Australia. “Field of Light Uluru was one idea that landed in my sketchbook and kept on nagging at me to be done,” he said. “I saw in my mind a landscape of illuminated stems that, like the dormant seed in a dry desert, quietly wait until darkness falls, under a blazing blanket of southern stars, to bloom with gentle rhythms of light.” You don’t have to understand art to appreciate it. Watching the sun set over Uluru, the night sky illuminating more than 50,000 frosted-glass spheres spread over an area the size of four football fields, is breathtaking. Mr Munro has brought the desert to life in the most visually spectacular way, by mirroring the sky. And that’s just the view from a distance. Walking among the installation is an immersive experience. “I’m passing on a feeling, not overintellectualising it,” Mr Munro explained. “Hopefully this will encourage people to come out to Uluru and be inspired like it inspired me.” l Bruce Munro’s Field of Light exhibition is at Uluru until 31 March 2018. Mauritius You’ll be building sandcastles in no time – fly direct from Perth in just over eight hours to this Indian Ocean island that is a mini melting pot with French, African and Indian influences. The cosmopolitan capital of Port Louis is home to the Natural History Museum, which opened in 1842 and has accumulated more than 35,000 artefacts (including a reconstructed dodo). However, you’ll want to spend most of your time outdoors, making the most of the outstanding water-sports facilities, 18-hole championship golf courses and adult and family friendly resorts. Flic-en-Flac in the south is popular with scuba divers and snorkellers and there
are plenty of restaurants in nearby Gris-Gris serving up authentic Mauritian creole seafood dishes. The southern, eastern and western coastlines are dotted with mid-range to high-end luxury and all-inclusive resorts. The sunset on the west coast and full-day catamaran trip to Ile aux Cerfs on the east should be included in every Mauritius holiday itinerary.

When to go: This is a year-round destination but winter (May to September) is less crowded. December is high season, although cyclones can occur in January. June / July 2017 Horizons 41

Singapore
This popular resort island is just minutes from Singapore’s city centre by train, making it an easy day trip. Considering attractions include two golf courses, the Adventure Cove Waterpark and Universal Studios Singapore, you might want to stay a little longer. The island is known for kid-friendly accommodation with most hotels offering kids’ club activities to allow the grown-ups a chance to soak up one of the many spa treatments. For tranquillity, head to Sentosa Cove, an exclusive oceanfront strip of high-end hotels.
Why not: The Sentosa Boardwalk is a 700m timber pedestrian walkway featuring five garden themes, canopycovered travellators and lots of shops and restaurants.
Iceland Did you know that Iceland isn’t always cold? Temperatures can hit the mid-20s over summer, perfect for snorkelling between tectonic plates at the Silfra Fissure. That said, the island is most beautiful in winter – you might see the Northern Lights between September–April (when the sky is at its darkest) plus there are seven ski resorts – keep warm soaking in a natural hot spring. Tour the sites of the Golden Circle, including the Geysir geothermal fields, Strokkur geyser and Thingvellir National Park. Don’t miss Vatnajokull National Park, home to Europe’s biggest glacier, most powerful waterfall and Iceland’s highest mountain. The capital Reykjavik is easy to explore by foot.
Best for Adventure
Try it: Factories in Westfjords use geothermal heat to harvest sea-salt flakes from the ocean to produce flavoured salts.
Santorini Greece
Best for Romance
Postcard-perfect Santorini is a must-see for visitors to Greece, especially if you want to escape the hustle and bustle of busy Athens – think crystal clear skies, steep hidden laneways and whitewashed buildings carved into the cliff-face with dome shaped Aegean-blue roofs. Stretch your legs on a breathtaking two-hour hike from Fira to Oia (start early in the day between July and August to beat the heat) before soaking up some ancient history at the Akrotiri Archaeological Site, a Minoan Bronze Age settlement. If arriving by ferry, you still have the option to ride a donkey up.
Do this: Half-day and full-day food and wine tours
allow visitors to discover Santorini’s volcanic wines; then feast on olives and creamy favá (pureed yellow split peas).

The Maldives
Best for Romance
Be prepared to relax – the Maldives, an archipelago of more than 1000 coral islands is the ultimate destination for luxury travel and it’s only 11 hours from Perth via Singapore. Soak up some sun on Fulhadhoo’s deserted white sandy beaches or swim with whale sharks on Ari Atoll. Alternatively get in touch with your inner conservationist at the recently opened turtle rescue centre at Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu. Home to manta-rays and more than 2,000 species of fish, the Maldives is a divers haven. Accommodation ranges from three-star, family friendly to high-end ultra-luxury resorts, the Maldives suits any traveller’s budget.
Stay here: Tick “luxe overwater bungalow” off your bucket list; shack up in a private thatched hut above crystal clear waters.
Zanzibar Tanzania
Just off the coast of Tanzania, this historic island evokes images of near-biblical scenes with its blend of architecture – there are Arab, Persian, Indian, European and Swahili elements – and pungent aromas of exotic spices from when it was a vibrant trading centre in the 19th century. Its capital, Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a labyrinth of alleyways lined with colourful bazaars, minareted-mosques and Zanzibari houses. Stroll through produce markets, boutiqueedged Gizenga Street and around to the seafront where former sultans’ palaces have morphed into splendid accommodation such as the Zanzibar Serena Hotel and the new Park Hyatt. It’s wise to use a reputable tour operator when touring Zanzibar. Bench Africa or Adventureworld offer a range of experiences on the island. Qatar Airways offers a direct flight from Doha.

Boracay The Philippines
Given that travel to this tiny island involves planes, buses and ferries it’s no surprise that Boracay is a new frontier. One of 7000 islands in a country that covers sprawling cities, UNESCO World Heritage-listed landscapes and some of South East Asia’s best beaches, this island is a great destination for luxe-seekers. At 5km long, White Beach is the centre point of the island; you’ll find restaurants, dive shops and hotels. Family friendly water-based activities such as wind surfing, sail boating and jet skiing are readily available, but if a seaside massage is more your style you’ll find plenty of these, too.
At sundown: Take a cruise on a paraw, a traditional sailing boat made of wood and bamboo.

Hawaii
Best for Adventure
Hawaii’s islands offer plenty for outdoorsy families. Hire a car and drive Maui’s serpentine Hana Highway, stopping at a roadside waterfall for a splash. Oahu’s North Shore is the place to catch the perfect wave; the nearby Polynesian Cultural Centre offers a crash course in Hawaiian history. Browse high-end designer goods in Honolulu on chic Kalakaua Avenue or grab a bargain at Waikele Premium Outlets, it’s a 30-minute drive from Waikiki but there’s a free shuttle service. Sunrise or sunset is the best time to check out the Kilauea volcano on the Big Island; book an organised tour for glowing views.
Don’t miss: Local delicacy poke is a raw fish salad; you’ll find it in just about every restaurant and there are some left-of-centre options such as poke tacos or pizza.
Phu Quoc Vietnam Best for Romance
More than half of the Vietnamese island of Phu Quoc, located just off the coast of Cambodia, is national parkland, making this a great destination for hiking through tropical jungles. The capital of Duong Dong (pronounced “Sa-zoo-ong Dong”) is where the action is: you’ll find hotels, resorts and restaurants here; Dinh Cau night market is the best place to sample local cuisine. Head to the south west coast for secluded resorts with private beaches, golf courses and spas.
Meet the locals: The island is known for its stunning sunsets – see in the evening with residents at Dinh Cau Temple. 44 Horizons June / July 2017

The latest news from the motoring world
Good time Rolls Rolls-Royce has designed and built an electric car and donated it to a children’s hospital in the UK in a bid to reduce the stress on young patients before they go into surgery. The shrunken custom-built car was built by the renowned luxury car maker so children awaiting surgery could drive themselves through hospital corridors to the operating theatre. The route is lined with traffic signs. “It’s wonderful seeing a smiley face on the way to theatre, rather than an apprehensive one,” said paediatric matron Sue Nicholls at the St Richard’s Hospital Paediatric Day Surgery Unit in Chichester. The vehicle is called the Rolls-Royce SRH, after the hospital it was donated to.
Old CHiPs Television cop show fans of a certain age will fondly remember the long-running series CHiPs, which followed the adventures of Californian motorcycle police officers Frank “Ponch” Poncherello and Jon A. Baker. This year marks 40 years since they first rolled onto screens worldwide. The show ran for six seasons until 1983. Ponch, who had the radio call sign of 7-Mary-4, was played by Erik Estrada, while Baker (7-Mary-3) was played by Larry Wilcox. The show’s name was based on a quasi-acronym for Californian Highway Patrol. The CHiPs ’99 reunion movie was released in 1998. A further 2017 make was panned by critics.
Electrifying vision New chips
Honda is aiming for two-thirds of its sales in Europe to be some form of electric vehicle by 2025. If successful, the Japanese car maker’s “Electric Vision” will see a dramatic increase in sales of its plug-in hybrid, battery electric and fuel cell cars. The announcement came as Honda unveiled its hydrogen-powered Clarity Fuel Cell model at the Geneva motor show in March, while it plans to launch a new hybrid model in 2018, which will have a two-motor hybrid system.
Audi has detailed its interest in developing artificial intelligence in vehicles, and has joined forces with computer chip manufacturer NVIDIA to further the abilities of its autonomous vehicles. The potential of NVIDIA’s MIB2+ chip was explored with an Audi Q7, which was firstly driven by a human driver, allowing it to gain a limited familiarity with the route and surroundings with the help of some extra cameras. This established a correlation between the driver’s reactions and the occurrences detected by the cameras, said Audi. During subsequent demonstration drives the car was able to interpret instructions and act appropriately. June / July 2017 Horizons 47

Hyundai Elantra SR
I
n recent years, a market has emerged for small cars with just a little extra sparkle. Not hot hatches – they’ve been around for decades – but warm ones. These are cars that have more sporting flavour than the base model, but not to the extent of the high-priced pocket rockets that inhabit the hot hatch niche. This is where the Hyundai Elantra SR sits, competing with the likes of the Honda Civic RS and Mazda3 SP25 GT. The biggest difference between the Elantra SR and other Elantras is what’s lurking under the bonnet. The SR has pinched the 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine from the Veloster Turbo, which makes 150kW and 265Nm.
Specific changes for the Elantra SR engine include shorter intake pipes and an electronic waste gate for more accurate boost control. That’s not all: the torsion beam rear suspension of the regular Elantra has been ditched in favour of a more sophisticated independent multi-link rear end set up, which has been tuned specifically for the Australian market. It’s sharp, responsive and composed and deservedly sits in the upper echelons of the category in this regard. The seven-speed, twin clutch auto in the test car was generally smooth, although, some surging at low speed is evident – as is typical of a twin clutch ‘box.
Hyundai Elantra SR specifications Price Engine Power Torque Claimed fuel economy CO 2 emissions ANCAP safety rating
Legroom is good – with the driver’s seat adjusted for a 190cm occupant, there was still ample room in the back for someone the same size. In the ADR test, fuel consumption is 7.2L/100km for the Elantra SR auto, and in around-town driving, we achieved 7.8L/100km. Impressive for a sporty thing. It’s compatible with Apple Carplay and Android Auto, and the safety kit includes blind spot detection and rear

cross traffic alert. Autonomous braking is an obvious omission, and the space-saver spare tyre is also a safety issue in the event you get a flat. It doesn’t have sat nav either. However, it does have six airbags and advanced seatbelt reminders on all five seating positions, and provided good passenger protection in ANCAP’s crash tests, which helped the Elantra achieve a 5-star ANCAP safety rating. l

Volvo S90
A
lthough Volvo built its reputation on the back of well-made and safe saloons and wagons, it’s been quite some time since the now-Chinese owned Swedish car maker has had a vehicle capable of taking sales from the German large luxury car establishment. The S90 is, however, that car. Launched in Australia in June last year, the S90 competes with the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Also chasing a slice of this pie are the Jaguar XF, Lexus GS and Infiniti Q70. Volvo has long been an innovator in vehicle safety, however in recent years the company has also stepped up its focus on design and clever ergonomics, such as the iPad-
like central touch screen, or the practical rotary switch to start the engine. Other innovations on the S90 include a run-off road mitigation system, which was introduced as a world first on the XC90 in 2015. The car is able to automatically steer away from the edge of the road and reduce its speed, and if things are still looking dire, the seat belts will grab you tighter and hold you against the energy absorbing seat cushions. Like the XC90, with which it shares the same Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), the S90’s interior is its most impressive feature. The quality of the materials used and the way they’re put together and designed is

comfortably on par with its German competitors. The car we tested was the S90 T6 Inscription, which starts at $98,900 and is powered by a 2.0-litre, turbocharged petrol engine, which drives all four wheels. Outputs are 235kW and 400Nm. What’s clever about this engine is it has a little electric air compressor, which blows air into the intake before the
turbo spools up, to minimise turbo lag. One of the downsides of the S90 – and it’s not alone on this front – is the options list can blow out the purchase price significantly. Specifically, the 20-inch alloy wheels are a $2850 option, and it has the option of travelling back in time with a single CD player for $160. The S90 range starts at $89,860 drive away. l June / July 2017 Horizons 49

Mitsubishi Outlander XLS
Y
ou will no doubt be able to think of some books and films that, while not critically acclaimed, far outperformed award-winners at the box office. The phenomenon also happens repeatedly in the new car industry, and the Mitsubishi Outlander is one of them. It offers excellent value, such as the option of seven seats, plus good safety credentials, and interior comfort, great ride quality and below-average fuel consumption for the category. Price will always be near the top of consumers’ criteria when considering buying a new car, and this is also where the Outlander does well – it starts at $27,990 drive away for the manual five-seater. The sevenseater auto is under $31,000.
In the hyper-competitive mid-sized SUV category, which comprises about 20 different vehicles, the Outlander occupies sixth place in the sales race. In 2016, more Outlanders were sold than Volkswagen Tiguans and Honda CR-Vs. This 2017 model Outlander went on sale in September 2016, and introduced important safety features including blind spot warning, rear cross traffic alert and lane change assist. Though these are only on the range-topping Exceed and come as extras on the lesser variants. The current Outlander’s front-end look – referred to amusingly by Mitsubishi as its “Dynamic Shield” – has been around since its major refresh

in 2015, but since then there’s been some other changes under the skin. The update for the 2017 Outlander included revised front shock absorber valving to improve body control and steering linearity, and the rear shocks have been tweaked for an improved ride. However, the Outlander lags behind some of its competition in the way it drives. Its handling isn’t terrible, but it’s not as sharp as
some competitors and the combination of the 2.4-litre petrol engine and CVT gearbox makes for extra engine noise under hard acceleration. So while this new Outlander is better, it isn’t the category leader. However, the fact it has the option of seven seats and is a very compelling value proposition, means it’ll continue to be a hit among those prioritising good safety, reliability and features per dollar. l

Mazda3 Maxx
B
efore the Mazda3 was updated in July last year, it was one of Australia’s most popular cars, but you don’t remain competitive by staying the same. The Mazda3 Maxx is the most popular Mazda3 variant, and overall, the Mazda3 is one of the most popular small cars in Australia. The Mazda3 Maxx is Mazda’s golden goose – well, one of them – and the company is keen to keep it that way. Given buyers in this market are usually very price-sensitive, added value always goes down well, and that’s what happened last July. Most notably, autonomous braking, which can prevent or reduce the severity of
low-speed crashes, is now standard across the range. Mazda calls the technology “smart city brake support”, which for the new Mazda3 has been changed from an infrared-based laser sensor to a camera. The change was made because of the camera’s ability to detect pedestrians as well as other vehicles. On all new Mazda3 variants except the base model Neo, the system also functions while the vehicle is reversing. Next up in the model hierarchy is the Maxx, followed by the Touring, SP25, SP25 GT and the SP25 Astina. The lower three variants get the 2.0-litre petrol engine, while the SP models get the more spirited 2.5. Having driven both, the 2.5-litre engine’s

extra power and torque is distinct. For driving around town, the 2.0-litre is fine but it does work harder for lower outputs. It does use slightly less fuel, with the automatic hatch version consuming 5.8L/100km in the regulation fuel consumption test compared with 6.1L/100km for the equivalent 2.5-powered cars. The Maxx’s interior has come in for some revisions to include some more luxurious
finishes to the door trims and elsewhere in the car. The criticism of some Mazdas transmitting excessive road noise to the cabin is an old chestnut that’s losing relevance as Mazda continues to improve its vehicles in this area. The Mazda3 Maxx is not the cheapest small car, but you can see why. Its handling is sharp and fun, it’s very fuel efficient and has a 5-star ANCAP safety rating. It’s pretty hard to go wrong with the Mazda3 Maxx. l June / July 2017 Horizons 51

Technology
Blast from the past Some things improve with time, as shown by these old car technologies that have experienced a rebirth. Words Alex Forrest and Samantha Stevens
Electric Vehicles (EVs) In the early 1900s, electric cars were considered a viable alternative to the internal combustion engine. Early petrol-powered vehicles were difficult
– even dangerous – to start, with the explosive noise scaring many horses that still shared the road. By comparison, electric cars were quiet, reliable and easier to drive and service. The EV lost its charge when the internal combustion engine developed into a lighter, more powerful unit capable of much longer distances – plus the discovery of huge oil deposits in the US also made them economical. It wasn’t until the late ’90s that the EVs made a comeback. A few failed attempts from Chrysler, Ford, General Motors (GM), Honda and Nissan surfaced, before Toyota came through with the petrolelectric hybrid Prius that captured
the green-conscious buyer on a commercial scale. With the addition of public charging infrastructure, today’s full EVs boast all their original benefits, with improving range.
Engine starter buttons Starter buttons on cars date back more than 100 years, and typically required the use of both the ignition switch and then the starter button to close the circuit and fire up the car. Today, proximity keys are the main reason for a start button — simply the convenience of both opening the car and starting it without fishing for your keys. ▼
The fashion world is known for calling on ideas from the past. Just cast your mind back to bell-bottom flares and shaggy beards, or neon lycra and blue eyeshadow; then take a look around at the tragically hip for evidence of a resurgence of these styles. Similarly there are definite parallels when it comes to some current trends in the automotive world, where some old ideas have become new again.

Automatically dipping headlights
Folding convertible hardtops
In 1952, GM introduced its “Autronic Eye” system on Cadillac and Oldsmobile models, making the switch from high beam to low an automated process. The sensor, which looked like a scale model Zeppelin hovering above the dash, automatically switched from high to low beam when it sensed oncoming headlights. After drivers found it overly sensitive to other light sources, such as street lamps, it was phased out. But in the past few years, accurate automated highbeam systems are filtering back into modern vehicle makes, including Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai and, of course, Cadillac.
In 1996, the Mercedes-Benz SLK convertible kicked off the modern folding hardtop revolution. However, the initial phase of this movement began in 1935 with the Peugeot 401 Eclipse, the first production car to feature a folding hardtop. The idea was reimagined on the 1957 Ford Fairlane Skyliner, and while the soft-top took over again afterwards, the folding hardtop came back into vogue thanks to technological improvements that made them lighter, more compact and more reliable. When the current model Mazda MX-5 was launched in 2015, it abandoned the folding hardtop of its immediate predecessor in favour of a weight-saving fabric roof. In January 2017, it introduced the MX-5 RF, which does have a folding hard top roof. The cycle continues …
Directional headlights The 1935 Tatra T77a was the first production car to feature directional lighting. It had a centrally mounted headlight, which turned with the steering, allowing drivers to ‘see’ around the bends. The 1948 Tucker 48 also featured a swivelling central ‘cyclops’ headlight, and in 1967, Citroen introduced the feature on both headlights, and linked it to both the steering and suspension systems for adjustment on both the horizontal and vertical axis. The flow-on effect was the self-levelling headlight: over rises and bumps, the lights automatically adjust to offer optimum vision, and again, not blind the oncoming traffic.
In 1935 the Peugeot 401 Eclipse was the first production car to feature a folding hardtop.
All-wheel drive All-wheel drive capability in passenger cars for better on-road grip, has been around since 1966, when the Jensen FF was introduced. Only 320 of these were built, and they were very expensive. All-wheel drive had a resurgence about 15 years later in the legendary Audi Quattro, which pioneered all-wheel drive to devastating effect in the World Rally Championship, rendering the two-wheel drive rally cars largely redundant. Nowadays, all-wheel drive in on-road focused cars is common, such as in the $22,400 Subaru Impreza. l
Ancient history Floor-mounted headlight dippers Until the 1970s, many cars had a button mounted on the floor near the pedals that switched the high beams on or off.
Swivelling seats and steering wheels In the ’50s, some Chryslers and Chevrolets had swivelling seats to allow easier entry and egress. For the same reason, the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing had a tilting steering wheel, and the 1961 Ford Thunderbird’s wheel could shift 25cm sideways. Airbags have made these features obsolete.
Vinyl roofs Through the 1960s and ’70s, vinyl-covered roofs were the poor man’s convertible, meant to make the car look like a soft-top without the extra cost. Some sceptics believed vinyl roofs were applied at the factory to cover up a poor paint finish.
Manual wind-up windows Hand-cranked windows used to be the norm, but nowadays they’re definitely relegated to the classics. Interestingly, the term “wind up your window” is still commonly used.
Did you know? The Motor Museum of WA at Whiteman Park is home to one of the oldest electric vehicles in the country, a 1914 Detroit Electric (left).

Q
Q
I am an older member (63), with limited experience of new cars, so before I ventured up to the Kimberley and did some off-road driving I consulted my new Mitsubishi Outlander AWD’s owner’s manual to find out about its many features. This car is fitted with traction control, which is a first for me. I leave it on all the time but can you explain why the manual instructed me to switch it off, which I did, for really heavy going in deep, soft sand. Am curious as to why the traction control is not left on in these situations? Nic Wallis-Smith
A: Conventional traction
control systems will brake the spinning wheels and direct the power only to the wheels that have traction. When driving in soft sand there is potential for all four wheels to lose traction at once, so leaving traction control on is not always ideal. In these situations it is usually preferable to have power going to all four wheels to maintain momentum.
I live in the hills and drive a vehicle with a continuously variable transmission. In general, is it better to use my brakes when going downhill or engage the manual gear option to keep the vehicle from picking up speed? I have had conflicting advice on this from various people regarding strain on the gearbox as opposed to wear on brake linings.
We bought a new Nissan Dualis in April 2013 and have travelled just under 35,000km, usually short distances in the metro area and maybe a once-a-year trip to the South West. We don’t accelerate or brake hard and have never towed a trailer – in other words, we never work the car hard. When it had its 70,000 km/42-month service, unexpected works added about $900 to the cost. Is it normal for a three-and-a-half year old car with low mileage to need the following: – Front brake service, which included the replacement of the rotor discs. The pads needed to be replaced because they were worn, which I understand, but I was told the rotor discs were below tolerance and couldn’t be skimmed because they are made from a softer compound. – Upper cylinder purge to maximise engine efficiency and an induction service to remove excess carbon and resins in the throttle body area. Is this due to using standard unleaded petrol and, if so, should we be using premium or a cleaner additive to the fuel to avoid the build up?
Vincent Hughes
Jon Callus
Q
A: When encountering road A: Firstly this is correct, conditions such as hill descents this will always create faster wear and tear on a vehicle’s brakes and braking system. In most circumstances and with no additional load (such as a caravan, trailer or loaded vehicle) using the brakes to slow down the vehicle will suffice. When you are carrying additional loads and are descending a steep hill, keep your speed down. Continue to use your brakes as the primary way of managing the vehicle’s speed. The transmission may provide some retardation, however it should not be relied upon in this way.
brakes rotors are made of a softer material for more efficient braking. Due to each person having different driving habits, it is very hard to estimate their durability. Furthermore, where you drive will make a difference. For example, when metro driving there is a lot of stop/start, requiring using the brakes more. An upper cylinder purge and induction clean is not 100 per cent necessary, unless it’s stipulated in the manufacturer’s logbook service. For any clarification on this, you can always contact our Motoring Advice team on 13 17 03.

Insurance
Who’s copping the most storm damage?
Bibra Lake and North Coogee, including Hamilton Hill and Coolbellup, also had high numbers of storm claims over the four years to June 2016. Taking some simple precautions around your home can keep you and your family safe and minimise storm damage: l trim tree branches that could fall and cause damage to your home or other property l clear gutters and downpipes to prevent blockages that may cause water to overflow into your roof l secure loose objects stored outside, including outdoor furniture
l have
an emergency kit with a torch, a battery-operated radio and first-aid kit l if you know a storm is approaching, move your car and other vehicles under shelter, charge your mobile phone and stay indoors away from windows. It’s also a good idea to review your insurance cover periodically to ensure any home improvements or other additions are covered. ▼
I
f you live in the 6210 Mandurah region postcode, chances are you’ve been in the path of some significant storm activity. This area recorded the most storm claims in the four years from June 2012 to June 2016, according to RAC Insurance claims data. While storm damage can occasionally be widespread, more often the destruction is localised with some areas more prone to damaging storm activity than others. Member Lounge Finding a good tradie just got easier Perth home owners searching for tradespeople to carry out home repairs have access to a new RAC service. Launched in April, RAC Home Repair & Maintenance provides access to a range of reliable local trade services that can be booked through one dedicated phone number. Set rates are offered for all trades giving you a better understanding of costs involved at the time of booking. There are no call-out fees during business hours and emergency situations are also covered.
Trade services include plumbing, gas and hot water, electrical, air conditioning and heating, glazing, locksmith, painting, fencing installation, handyman services, carpentry, paving and more. RAC Home Repair & Maintenance provides home owners with reliable services offering quality workmanship and making the process of organising home repairs fast and simple. To find out more about the services, visit rac.com.au/homerepair. To book call 1300 655 057. RAC members receive a 10 per cent discount on all trade services provided by RAC Home Repair & Maintenance.
Alarm monitoring: how does it work? Traditional monitoring uses a phone line, but with changes to technology and the introduction of the National Broadband Network (NBN), this may not be possible and you may need a wireless solution. It’s important you get the right advice
An event occurs at home
Your alarm sounds
to make sure your alarm panel will still work when you’re connected to the NBN and, if necessary, see what alternatives are available. RAC Security recommends wireless monitoring as it uses the 3G network.
Alarm signal is sent to monitoring centre
This means a higher level of security with no risk of phone-line tampering and you won’t pay any call costs to transmit information to the monitoring station.
Certified operator receives the alarm signal
The owner/keyholder is contacted and the appropriate action taken.
If you need advice on wireless monitoring and how it works with the NBN, contact RAC Security on 1300 132 735.

Keeping the wheels turning this winter
Cape Inscription
Francois Peron National Park
Low temperatures and wet weather can put extra stress on your car. Having your car serviced in time for winter will keep all essential systems in good working order. Worn brakes can extend your stopping distance and increase the risk of crashing on a wet road so should be checked as part of your regular service. Tyres should also be checked before the winter weather hits. Tyre pressures that are too low or too high, or tyres that are worn below the legal 1.5mm limit, will reduce grip and increase stopping distances, especially on wet roads. Cold weather also takes its toll on car batteries. Make sure battery terminals are clean. If your vehicle is becoming sluggish when starting, particularly on cold mornings, it may be time to
consider replacing the battery rather than risk being stranded. If possible, park your car under cover at night and avoid parking on the lawn as condensation can collect on the engine and ignition parts, which can cause current leakage. Condensation under the bonnet can also cause rust. Preparation is the key so visit rac.com.au/motoring for more information. If your car does break down, call RAC Roadside Assistance on 13 11 11.

Why miss words if you don’t have to?
This hearing aid works for your ears how a contact lens works for your eyes: improves your hearing without anyone knowing it’s there. Introducing a hearing aid that is designed for your individual hearing and is custom made here in Australia. It’s so small it fits right inside your ear canal, and that makes it virtually invisible for anyone else to see. Packs a Punch Despite its miniature size, the processor inside some of our models is so fast it supports the most sophisticated advances in digital hearing technology to date. The microprocessor is so fast, that it samples the listening environment 20,000 times per second and makes automatic adjustments to the sound it delivers to your ear. Our high tech models in the range are designed to identify nonspeech noise and the steady hum of background conversations then
