Growing towards one million members Every year, thousands of Western Australians join RAC for the first time or renew their membership. For some, this has continued across generations. As a result, and because of your support, RAC is growing towards one million members. Our million member milestone is especially important when you consider that, at the time when RAC was formed in 1905, the horse and cart were the main method of moving around our state. For some, motor vehicles were even considered to be a nuisance. This certainly didn’t stop the 32 Western Australians who came together to form an organisation that would become the state’s key advocate for the future of the motor vehicle and mobility in our state. RAC recognises that the decision to be an RAC member will be made for a number of reasons. It could be for family, to keep you moving, to be part of an organisation giving back to WA or to protect your most valuable belongings. My own personal experience saw my parents encourage me to join at the time I purchased my first car. They believed an RAC membership would be handy for me if help was needed. I am proud to say that I have been a member ever since. Becoming a member for the first time, or renewing your membership, can also deliver more than you think. It introduces you to great benefits at more than 100 retail and travel partners, as well as a range of RAC services. These services and benefits can include roadside assistance, insurance, personal loans and investments, car servicing, batteries and tyres, travel services, holiday parks and resorts, home security, home repairs and maintenance, and discounts on fuel, groceries, movie tickets and more.
In the past 12 months, almost 200,000 members have used RAC’s member benefits for the first time and this number is growing. The lead-up to Christmas is a great time to take advantage of your member benefits, by showing your membership card at a range of retail stores, or by using the RAC online shop. Your membership, as it was for those members at the formation of RAC in 1905, also enables RAC to continue its advocacy role in making it safer, easier and more sustainable to move around the state. As the year draws to a close, I would like to encourage RAC members and the community to stay safe over the festive season. When you travel to spend time with family and friends, please think of them and the safety of other road users before getting behind the wheel. Speeding and drink-driving have continued to devastate communities across the state this year, as has inattention and, in particular, the use of mobile phones, which has continued to cause distraction on our roads. So while the focus at Christmas is on connecting with loved ones, I encourage you to not do this while driving. As we approach the period of Christmas and New Year festivities, please take extra care on the roads and thoroughly enjoy the holiday break with your family and friends.

ROUNDABOUTS SURVEY
’60s rule
Just a quick note to say I really enjoyed the article on ’60s cars we loved’ (Horizons, August / September). Here’s a photo of my HD Holden – still on the road and ruling – 52 years and counting!
Are you confident you understand how to correctly use a roundabout, including dual lane roundabouts?
Mick Kordas
I always enjoy reading Horizons, especially of late when the cars of the ’60s and ’70s were featured. I wanted to share my ‘favourite ride’. My 1966 HR Holden, Herman, was purchased in 1972. He was my first car and I’m still driving him. Herman is also insured with RAC Classic Car Insurance.

Going for gold We have just completed a wonderful 10-week trip through the Goldfields, Northern Territory, Kimberly, Pilbara and the WA coast. It was lovely to read the article ‘Going for Gold’ (Horizons October / November) and see pictures of places we visited. We were covered with RAC Classic Roadside Assistance for the trip, which was well worth it when we broke down on the Gibb River Road 170km from Derby. Our accommodation was also covered as we waited five days for a car part from over east. Our last stop before Perth was two nights at

Faded licence plates On my weekly out of peak hour trips from Mandurah to Perth and on caravan trips around WA, there is a noticeable number of cars being driven with faded unreadable number plates. Has the law changed regarding number plates or are they just not being enforced anymore? Barb Paterson
RAC response Licensing regulations place the onus on the vehicle owner to keep the plate in good legible condition but it may be worth discussing with your licensing centre if you believe the fault lies with the manufacture of the plate. New plates can be issued by the Department of Transport, Licensing Division. For more details, visit transport.wa.gov.au/ licensing.

News in brief from the RAC & beyond
Snapshot
How fast can a thief get into your car? It can take as little as 30 seconds for a thief to break into your car and take any valuables left inside. CCTV footage from a Perth car park released by WA Police during 2017 shows a car being broken into in just 16 seconds. Property theft from cars is a significant problem. Car owners should always keep car doors locked, no matter how long they are leaving the car unattended and keep any property left inside out of sight or, ideally, somewhere else. The summer holiday period is the season of the most property crime, and the message from WA Police is “don’t turn your car into a shop window this summer”. During the summer months, thieves target cars in beach car parks, shopping centres, public car parks and street parking. Phones, tablets, laptops and GPS units have been identified as the items most commonly stolen from cars.
Stolen plates The theft of vehicle licence plates is an emerging crime, according to WA Police. Number plate theft has been linked to concealing stolen cars that are used to commit more serious crimes. To minimise the risk of number plate theft: l Replace the standard screws on your number plates with anti-theft or tamper-proof screws – they cost a lot less than replacing your licence plates. l Remove and store plates on long-term parked vehicles such as caravans and trailers.
Dangerous airbags – are you on the list? The world’s biggest ever vehicle recall, to replace faulty airbags, continues to affect an enormous number of vehicles in Australia across many makes, models and years. When deployed due to an impact, the faulty Takata airbags may propel metal fragments from the bag at great force. They have already caused deaths
and serious injuries around the world, including in Australia. If you have been contacted by your vehicle manufacturer to fit a replacement, it’s important you act immediately. If you’re unsure whether your car is affected, check Takata airbag recall at productsafety.gov.au.
Lifting the lid on capped-price servicing Capped-price servicing can be an attractive feature for car buyers, promising some certainty when it comes to the maximum cost of regular servicing for the vehicle over a number of years or up to a number of kilometres travelled. However, while the cost of basic servicing may remain under the capped price, regular checks made on the vehicle during the service may result in recommendations from the workshop to perform more work on the car. For example, capped-price servicing typically does not cover wear items such as brakes, tyres or batteries. While capped-price servicing is often promoted as being a good deal, it still pays to shop around to get the best price for a given logbook service. Also, if you’re considering a service plan – where you pay for a set number of vehicle services at the time you purchase the vehicle – you should do your homework first to make sure it really is a good deal. Remember, there is no requirement for car buyers to have a new car serviced by a dealership in order to keep the warranty intact, so you’re under no obligation to take up any included or extra servicing offer. If a capped-price servicing scheme isn’t as good as it looks from the outside, you should walk away and find a better, more transparent offer.

Keep your plates clearly visible
Don’t get trapped In the year to June 2017, RAC Roadside Assistance rescued more than 300 children after they were accidentally locked in cars. With the temperature of a car interior often reaching 40°C more than outside, it’s never safe in warm weather to leave children or pets unattended in a car for any period of time. It’s also important to be familiar with any deadlocking features in your car. Some deadlocks are intended as a theft deterrent, to prevent a car being entered even if the windows are smashed. For more information about locking features, check your car manual or contact the dealership.
As you’re packing the car for your next summer road trip, keep an eye on how high the mountain of luggage and equipment is getting both inside and out. You must have a clear view through all car windows and of all vehicle mirrors. If you’re carrying equipment outside the car, such as bike racks over the rear bumper, make sure it’s fastened securely and that both front and rear number plates are not obscured.
$?
By law, number plates should be clearly visible and legible. Number plates that are even partially obscured by an object outside your car can attract a fine. If bikes or other equipment racks are obscuring your number plates, you can purchase auxiliary plates to fix to the equipment outside your car. Auxiliary plates are available from the Department of Transport for $25.70 per plate. For more information, visit transport. wa.gov.au/auxiliary.
Find out the outrageous price someone paid for a number plate in Sydney recently. See page 8.
Riccardo’s $4 million car goes on display Daniel Riccardo unveiled his Red Bull RB10 Formula One racing car in September as one of the new displays at the Motor Museum of WA at Whiteman Park. The museum’s recent extension, which was officially opened by Riccardo, Premier Mark McGowan and museum chairman Kelvin Ferris,
also features a new exhibition telling the story of RAC’s motoring heritage in WA. Riccardo’s Formula One racing car is the one he drove to three Grand Prix wins in 2014, including his first victory at the Canadian Grand Prix. The vehicle is estimated to be worth $4 million. Riccardo told RAC’s Alex Forrest that it
was particularly meaningful for him to display the car in his home state where he learned his craft at the grassroots level in karting. For more about the Motor Museum of WA, visit whitemanpark.com.au. RAC members receive a 20 per cent discount off entry. December / January 2018 Horizons 13

The cars West Aussies loved in the high-flying ’80s It was the era of WA Inc, the America’s Cup, shoulder pads and big hair. It was also the start of a big move to smaller cars, thanks to Japanese manufacturers. In our final instalment of the series, we feature some well-loved cars from the ’80s. by Toby Hagon
Mitsubishi Sigma The Sigma started life as a Chrysler before Mitsubishi purchased the South Australian manufacturing facility in 1980, in turn affixing its badge on the mid-sizer. It was the start of many locally produced Mitsubishis that tried to rival Ford and Holden with a smaller-is-smarter promise. While large Fords and Holdens sprouted cylinders as the key to effortless performance and towing, Mitsubishi cashed in on the shift to smaller vehicles and the (relative) grunt of its optional 2.6-litre four-cylinder.

Nissan Exa Turbo In some ways, the Exa was an obvious move in the wake of Celica mania. Take the proven mechanicals of the Pulsar small car and wrap them in a two-door sports car skin. Utilising the diminutive 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo from the Pulsar ET – one of the early hot hatches – the Exa had the performance to match its looks. The turbo was all but guaranteed to go bang (it was early turbo tech!), but that didn’t deter the enthusiasts.
Volvo 700 Series Safe and boxy: on paper the Volvo sales pitch just wasn’t on the agenda of car buyers during the 1980s. Yet there was something that appealed, in part because of the racing success of the smaller 240. But it was the 740 and 760 that changed things for Volvo. The car was big and had visions of challenging Mercedes-Benz and BMW with luxury. Any corner, line or edge was ludicrously sharp or straight, with curves apparently forbidden in what was a bold, almost imposing design. And if you wanted a wagon with space, the Estate had it in (boxy) spades.
Toyota Celica By the 1980s, Japanese cars were getting sexier, courtesy of sports models such as Toyota’s Celica. The first-generation 1970s Mustang-inspired Celica put it on the map, but it was the sleek and edgy 1980s model that gave the Celica street cred, at least from the outside. Pop-up lights and a door wedge profile were all the rage in the stonewashed and permed ’80s. Behind the wheel, the promise of pace never materialised, courtesy of undernourished four-cylinder engines. But in 1985, the Celica rounded out and stepped it up with a high-revving motor that drove the front wheels for the first time. It was a big change but one Aussies warmed to.
Mazda RX-7 In a land of big cars with big engines, the Mazda RX-7 shouldn’t have worked. Yet it was the perfect antidote for those looking for driving enjoyment on a budget. It was small and impossibly light, in part because of the tiny rotary engine hidden beneath its comparatively long bonnet. The RX-7’s popularity was fast-tracked, courtesy of Canadian-born racer Allan Moffat, who successfully challenged the V8 Fords and Holdens on Australian racetracks, even picking up the 1983 Australian Touring Car Championship in his familiar blue and white RX-7. Datsun/Nissan Bluebird The Bluebird started life as a Datsun before shifting to Nissan in 1983 in line with a global move for the Japanese car maker. Coming off the success of the Datsun 200B, the Bluebird had customers lining up. Underneath, there was plenty of 200B, right down to the engine and rear-drive layout (the last before a late ’80s switch to front-drive). But its sharper-edged mid-sized body was more modern. It was also doing nicely on Aussie racetracks in the hands of George Fury, who at times outpaced Peter Brock’s Commodore.

Holden Commodore Ted Bullpitt, from the iconic series Kingswood Country, would have been horrified to see his beloved Kingswood put out to pasture in the late 1970s to make way for this newfangled thing called a Commodore. Smaller than the classic Holden large car that defined the 1970s, the Commodore was a response to the 1973 oil scare that prompted car makers to reduce fuel use. Of course, by the time the heavily reworked German Opel Insignia arrived, fuel supply had normalised, so Holden had a monumental task tempting families into its large car that wasn’t so large. By the late 1980s, the Commodore had ditched its Holden engine (briefly using a Nissan one before switching to its first V6, from Buick) and grown with the arrival of the everunreliable VN model.
Toyota Tarago In an era when four-wheel drives were actually designed to go off-road, the Tarago was a spacious alternative to the Commodores and Falcons that typically populated suburban driveways. A glance at its upright, boxy stance reinforced it was all about seats and space, although the heavily raked windscreen gave it a semblance of style. Big families loved them and the people mover (briefly) enjoyed some popularity … until the arrival of the SUV.

barbecues and tasty treats from Rotto’s famous bakery. It’s a nostalgic fragrance woven with the sounds of children giggling, snorkellers splashing and the lapping of crystal-clear water on yachts. Over the past year, some 650,000 visitors crossed the 19km channel between Perth and ‘Rotto’. At least half of all visitors have been 10 times or more. The former penal colony, boys’ reformatory and war base is arguably as much a part of Western Australia as mine sites, colourful entrepreneurs and giant blue skies. Now for the first time in decades, things are changing.
Step back in time Rottnest – also known as Wadjemup – has a history stretching back 7500 years, when it formed part of the mainland, with artefacts suggesting Aboriginal people walked across a landbridge before sea levels rose about 7000 years ago. European settlement of the island began in 1829 with a farming focus, including livestock, grains, tobacco, fruit and even salt harvested from the central saline lakes. A decade later, the outpost was transformed into an Aboriginal penal colony, imprisoning

On Rottnest, people from all walks of life exchange nods and smiles as they stroll beneath leafy Moreton Bay fig trees. Everyone gets around in the same casual dress code of T-shirt and thongs, pedalling their bikes. The hang-ups of the ‘real world’ readily slip away, replaced by the smells of sunscreen, sizzling

nearly 4000 men and boys over the next century. Prisoners were forced into hard labour, quarrying stone and constructing most of the colonial buildings still found in Thomson Bay. Hundreds are believed to have died, buried on the island. Towards the end of the 19th century, the Rottnest Island Boys’ Reformatory was opened next to the prison. It closed in 1904 and as the last inmates moved off the island in the 1930s, its use as a holiday island grew. The repurposing was signified with a paint job: the buildings’ blindingly white lime wash was coated over with the gentler and now well-known peach ochre hue. The two world wars interrupted tourism, but when the global conflicts ended, Rottnest returned to a recreational escape. The reformatory was converted into accommodation, the Governor’s summer residence was turned into a pub and the remnant canons and army barracks became tourist attractions. The prisoners’ quarters, known as The Quod, are still used as holiday accommodation,

but by May 2018, the Rottnest Island Authority (RIA) will take it back for historical preservation.
Modern day escape Over the past two decades, upgrades have been made to the accommodation and facilities, including freshwater showers, televisions, a solar farm and a new booking system. The old ballot system, where booking applications could only be made at specific times for limited peak periods by those quick – or patient – enough to get in first, was thrown out in 2013. Now, visitors are free to book up to 18 months in advance, and bookings can be made at any time of the day, year round. Largely, though, life on Rottnest has been deliberately kept to a ‘back to basics’ style, and the isle’s status as a Class A Nature Reserve means it needs to balance tourism with conservation. A large portion of the RIA’s annual budget is allocated to managing the marine and terrestrial environment and the island’s sustainability.

Bathurst Lighthouse near Pinky Beach is one of the island’s two lighthouses.
Rottnest Island Authority
The next few years mark a new chapter in Rotto’s story, with two new developments planned: a glamping-style eco retreat at Pinky Beach, and a major expansion of Hotel Rottnest into a resort facility. At the time of writing, the Rottnest Hotel expansion was being reviewed by the RIA. The development of Pinky’s 86 low-impact eco tents will be the first new accommodation at Rottnest in more than 30 years. The $13 million development will cover two hectres of land between The Basin and Pinky Beach, providing a number of eco tent options, from luxury glamping to affordable family accommodation and will include boardwalks, a beach club and kiosk. Public access routes to the beach will remain. Construction is planned to commence early in 2018. Plans for the Hotel Rottnest site, owned by tourism developer the Prendiville Group, are being evaluated, but the proposed development includes 80 new villas, a large feature pool and a function centre for 400 people.

New eats, walks and a seaplane As well as new accommodation options, there are other new offerings for this crop of summer visitors. the island and is dotted with storytelling audio boxes, interpretive artwork and a whale sculpture created by Noongar artist Peter Farmer. The six-km, one-way Karlinyah Bidi section traces the northern beaches such as Catherine, Stark and Rocky bays, while the 10km Wardan Nara Bidi weaves between southern reaches and central inland stretches, including Parker Point, Wadjemup Lighthouse and Strickland Bay. The trail’s improvements grant better beach access at Narrow Neck, Catherine Bay, Little Armstrong and Armstrong Point, and with 6900 seedlings planted in targeted areas, the result is a wonderful combination of conservation and heritage. A new restaurant is set to open, with Thomsons replacing what was Aristos. And, there are now even more options for getting across to Rotto, with a Swan River-based seaplane offering day trips and Captain Cook Cruises launching a new ferry service – Sealink Rottnest Island – departing from Fremantle. There are also private planes, a private helicopter and a bright yellow catamaran to get you there.

Rotto’s quokkas are a social media hit.
One thing that’s unlikely to change any time soon is the quokka selfie phenomenon. The furry native marsupials – who are responsible for Rottnest’s name, which translates to “rat’s nest” and was bestowed by 17th century Dutch explorers who mistook them for catsized rats – are an internet sensation. Their comic grins and cute, cuddly features have been captured thousands of times in visitor selfie photographs. Described as a ‘must-do experience’, the craze was first sparked by a 2013 article in The Huffington Post entitled “Meet The Quokka, The Happiest Animal In The World”. Since then, celebrities including Hugh Jackman, Terri Hatcher and Martin Clunes of Doc Martin fame have snapped themselves with quokkas. It’s estimated quokka selfies have reached more than 610 million people worldwide – proving that, as always on Rottnest, it’s the simple pleasures that are the best. ●

RAC Rescue
Narrow escape After escaping a car crash that would normally have been fatal, Cory Payne faced a long road to recovery. Now back on his feet, he has been reunited with his rescuers.
I
t was the summer of 2014 and 17-year-old Cory Payne had just graduated from high school. He had been accepted into university, had his driver’s licence and was enjoying the freedom of his summer break. Payne felt as though he had the world at his feet. But in a split second, everything changed. While driving home to his family’s farm in New Norcia one Saturday afternoon, he drifted on to the shoulder of the road and crashed. The impact was so severe, the first motorist who stopped assumed Payne could not possibly have survived. Miraculously he had. Emergency services were called and an RAC Rescue helicopter was immediately deployed. “I remember seeing the accident from the air,” recalls RAC Rescue air crewman Garth Fitzgerald. “It was looking particularly bad. I went over to the vehicle and saw the extent of the damage. I was thinking ‘this kid will be lucky’.”
Cory Payne meets his rescuers – (from left) Critical Care Paramedic Jason Boschin, Pilot Andy Greenall, Air crewman Garth Fitzgerald.
The swift air transfer from the crash scene and the care given to Payne immediately after the crash gave him a lifeline. But the road to recovery would be a long one. “I had 56 stitches and 24 staples in my scalp,” says Payne describing his lifethreatening injuries. “I had three bleeds on my brain and that was the worst thing, so they put me into an induced coma. I was in a coma for a while and had to relearn everything again.” He was in hospital for seven weeks before undergoing eight months of rehabilitation. More than three years after the crash, Payne and his family met the RAC Rescue helicopter crew who came to his aid that day. RAC Rescue pilot Andy Greenall said meeting Payne again had been an important and rewarding experience. “It’s wonderful to see somebody who’s managed to come out the other end of some bad experiences and major trauma.”
For Payne, meeting his rescuers gave him the opportunity to express his immense gratitude. “You want to say ‘thanks’ but thanks just isn’t enough. I’ll never be able to thank them enough for saving my life. If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t be here. But it’s also good for them to see me now that I’m better, not just when I was at my worst.” Payne now speaks to school students and sports teams about road safety, particularly in the Wheatbelt, and has raised more than $35,000 for charity. He hopes one day to be an occupational therapist and work in a rehabilitation hospital, like the one that helped him. ● To view the video where Payne recounts his rescue, along with his family, and the RAC Rescue crew, visit rac.com.au/rescuereunion. Funded by the State Government and sponsored by RAC, the two RAC Rescue helicopters based in Perth and Bunbury are managed by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services.

Energy
Future energy Soon, sharing energy with your neighbours or having an electricity storage battery in your home could not only become reality, but the norm. by Jane Hammond
their draw on the electricity grid (via batteries) or offset costs by selling to others (trading). What is interesting is the choice that people will make. Will they choose to trade their power or store it instead?
Power trading The first option is to sell your power – not back to the grid – but direct to your neighbours, and it is WA technology that is leading the way in this space. Perth-based Power Ledger is a cutting-edge power trading company that plans to link domestic energy consumers with other homes that generate energy with their solar panels. The idea is that if you generated
excess power at your home during the day when you weren’t there and didn’t need it, you could sell it to someone who did need it at a higher rate than if you sold it back to the grid. Importantly, that ‘higher rate’ would still be below the current rates charged for domestic electricity supply, so those without solar panels could buy cheaper electricity. For instance, rather than receiving, say, seven cents per kw of power sold back into the grid, when the power company sells it to you for 29 cents, the solar panel owner could sell the excess kw to another consumer for, say, 14 cents. The consumer benefits because they would still pay less than the cost of ▼

id you know that WA has one of the highest rates of rooftop solar panel penetration in Australia and according to reports, we enjoy 300 full days of sunshine every year? Collectively, that means we’re generating a lot of power outside the grid, but right now much of it goes to waste as it is being generated during the day when no one is home to use it. Changing technology means we will soon be able to make better use of that wasted solar energy, by either selling it to our neighbours or storing it in our homes for our own use. The winners will be us – domestic energy users who can either reduce

purchasing from the energy supplier, and the seller benefits by getting a higher price for their excess power than the energy retailer would pay. To make the economics even more attractive, the central power retailer is removed from the transaction, as is the banking system, meaning costs for handling the exchange are cut to the bone – leaving both the buyer and the seller of the energy better off. The energy trading company would take a small cut and the cost of moving the electricity would be low as the buyer and seller would be close by. The system would use a cryptocurrency similar to Bitcoin to make the transactions seamless and immediate. Managing Director of Power Ledger David Martin says the trading system would be done using an app and

blockchain technology, which acts like a digital ledger to keep a record of transactions between buyers and sellers. “The power goes to the nearest point that has demand at that time, so it’s efficient,” Martin says. Power Ledger is trialling the trading system in apartment buildings in Fremantle. The apartment dwellers share the cost of solar panels and see the benefits by paying for what they use and selling what they don’t to their more energy-hungry neighbours. These trading systems are known as ‘behind the metre’ as they operate inside a closed network of energy users. While Power Ledger’s system is still a couple of years away from launching to consumers, the trial demonstrates how the system can work for those in strata-titled housing and how they can share the benefits of the solar revolution.
Affordable storage batteries The energy technology that is about to go mainstream is in-home battery storage. Managing Director of the Clean Energy Council in WA, Dermot Costello, says in-home batteries were following the same downward curve towards affordability as solar panels, with the

Tesla’s Powerwall is a battery that stores energy generated by solar panels.
Redflow’s ZCell claims to be the “world’s smallest flow battery”.
POWER UP: The future of home storage batteries Lithium-ion batteries
Flow batteries
This type of battery technology is most likely already powering your mobile and laptop. Most of today’s electric vehicles (EVs) use lithium-ion batteries due to their long life and impressive energy storage capacity. The Tesla Powerwall and Powerpack batteries, which allow home and business owners to store renewable energy, are lithium-ion batteries. Current high costs are a barrier, but with prices expected to drop, Australians may embrace them as enthusiastically as they have solar panels.
Flow batteries could be the next big thing – in fact, they’re seen as the challenger to lithium-ion batteries. How do they work? Liquid electrolyte solutions are stored separately, and when they flow next to each other they produce power. Australian company Redflow designed the ZCell, the “world’s smallest flow battery”, which was launched in 2016 and works in both home and business energy storage systems.
Pros: They pack a lot of power into a small space. Cons: Despite mass production lowering costs, they’re still relatively expensive. Who do they suit: Households that are after a battery storage system that can provide relatively large amounts of power instantaneously (i.e. a battery that will ramp up quickly) and who are willing to invest more money.
Pros: The battery can be fully discharged without affecting its life span (100 per cent depth of discharge). They’re considered to be safer and more environmentally friendly than other types of batteries.
Cons: With a shorter life span than lithium-ion batteries, price might be an issue. The heavy weight of the batteries also better suits them to large-scale applications. Who do they suit: People who are keen on cutting-edge technologies. However, they’re also great for standalone systems or remote applications.
systems likely to pay for themselves in a time frame mirroring that of rooftop solar. “With the plummeting costs of manufacture, battery costs have come down so much that they are now within touching distance for the average domestic home, and within 18 to 24 months you will see a lot more domestic-scale batteries being rolled out across WA,” Costello says. “At the moment, they are quite expensive at more than $20,000, but within a few years they will be between $5000 and $10,000 for an average home.” Costello says even with the introduction of in-home batteries we still need the power grid and it’s poles and wires to ensure consistency of supply. Which brings up the risk. Martin says, due to the way we pay our tariffs for the state grid system via our regular electricity bills, those with battery power would be more likely to opt out of the system, leaving those unable to invest in solar panels paying more for the cost of a distribution network that fewer people were using. “There are some regulatory changes that will need to be made to accommodate the future,” he says. l December / January 2018 Horizons 33

STRAIGHT AHEAD: Do not indicate as you enter the roundabout but indicate left when you pass the exit just before the one you wish to take. You must give way to traffic already on the roundabout.
Roundabouts refresher Of all the rules on our roads, there aren’t many that generate as much discussion and confusion as roundabouts.
R
oundabouts continue to spring up all around us – at intersections both big and small, on major roads and in local traffic areas. Roundabouts can create a safer and more efficient traffic flow, but drivers can often be confused about how to correctly tackle one. Most of the confusion centres on when it’s necessary to indicate entry to and exit from a roundabout. That confusion escalates according to the size and complexity of the roundabout, particularly where there is more than one lane of traffic travelling in the same direction. So let’s try to clear up some of the misunderstandings. Firstly, what exactly defines a roundabout? According to the Road
Traffic Code 2000, a roundabout is an intersection with: (a) one or more marked lanes, all of which are used by vehicles travelling in the same direction around a central traffic island; or (b) room for one or more lines of traffic travelling in the same direction around a central traffic island. Sometimes roundabouts are marked with a sign that looks like a ‘recycling’ symbol, but even when they’re not marked, they are easy enough to identify and apply the correct rules to.
Entering and exiting The first rule is that you must always give way to vehicles to your right, particularly if they are already on the roundabout. It’s the same rule you’d apply to any uncontrolled intersection – wait until it is safe to enter.
The other basic rule is that you must signal to other drivers that you’re about to leave the roundabout. So whether you are turning left, going straight, or turning right, use your left indicator to signal that you are exiting just before your exit point. So those are the ins and outs, now on to what happens in between.
Single-lane roundabouts The most common type of roundabout is an island at the intersection of two roads with a single lane of traffic in each direction. Here, there are four entry or exit points. ● If you’re turning left at the first exit, you indicate a left turn before you enter and keep indicating left until you exit. ● If you’re going straight ahead – that is

TURN RIGHT: Indicate right as you approach the roundabout, and then indicate left when you pass the exit prior to the one you wish to take. As with all other manoeuvres, you must give way to traffic already in the roundabout.
continuing on in the same direction on the other side of the roundabout – don’t indicate as you enter the roundabout but ideally you should indicate a left turn just before you exit. Indicate your left turn as you pass the exit just prior to the one you’re exiting from. Not enough time? It’s true that on smaller, single-lane roundabouts you only travel a short distance between one exit and the next, but even a short signal from you is important as it lets any following traffic know where you’re going. So, if practicable, you should indicate.
Roundabout penalties Failing to give way at a roundabout: Three demerit points and $150 fine. All other offences for not using a roundabout correctly: Two demerit points and $100 fine.
Not to scale
U-TURN: As with a right-hand turn, indicate right as you approach the roundabout and then indicate left when you are past the exit just prior to the one you wish to take. Remember to give way to traffic already in the roundabout.
● If
you’re turning right, indicate a right turn before you enter the roundabout. Then as you pass the exit just prior to the one you’re exiting from, indicate left.
Three exits or more than four exits What about on a three-exit roundabout, or where there are five or more exit points? The key here is thinking about the midway point in the roundabout. If you’re taking any exit before the halfway mark on the roundabout, then indicate a left turn as you approach the roundabout and keep indicating left until you exit. When taking any exit after the halfway point, indicate a right turn as you enter the roundabout and then indicate left as you pass the exit that is just prior to your exit point.
Multi-lane roundabouts You need to think ahead before entering a roundabout where there are two or more lanes of traffic going in the same direction, but the same rules apply as to when you need to indicate upon entering and exiting.
Roundabouts can create a safer and more efficient traffic flow but often drivers can be confused about how to correctly tackle one.
Where arrows are marked on the road to show the direction of traffic, obey the direction of the arrows. If you do need to change lanes once you’ve entered a multi-lane roundabout, wait until it is safe then signal a move into the correct lane. From there, you must indicate your exit as you would on any roundabout. ● December / January 2018 Horizons 35

News and information for travellers
RAC President’s Cruise 2018
Nature’s skyscrapers The fascinating colours, textures and vast scale of the US’s stunning natural wonders have long attracted Australian visitors. Increasing numbers of Australian travellers are heading to the US and venturing beyond the big cities to explore its national parks, from the ocean to the desert. While the most renowned parks, such as Yellowstone, Grand Canyon and Yosemite, always draw the crowds, visitors should not overlook lesser-known parks such as Arcadia and Bryce Canyon. Arcadia National Park in Maine has a coastal setting and is home to the tallest mountain on the US Atlantic coast. Its soaring mountains, lush woodlands,
tranquil lakes and diverse wildlife make it a memorable place to visit. Meanwhile, Bryce Canyon in Utah is known for its spectacular red and orange geological formations, colloquially known as ‘Hoodoos’, which create an otherworldly landscape. Adventurous visitors can hike right down to the canyon floor or enjoy a 28km scenic drive with many lookouts. At an elevation of about 2700m Bryce Canyon is also popular with cross-country skiers and other snow-sports enthusiasts. If you’d like to find out more about visiting the US’s national parks, the best times to go and where to stay, talk to an RAC Travel consultant on 1300 655 179.
A mountainous island off the coast of Japan, towering marble gorges in a Taiwanese national park and a taste of ‘old Manila’ are just some of the highlights of the 2018 RAC President’s Cruise. Hosted by RAC President Tony Evans, you’ll experience three cultures between Japan, Taiwan and the Philippines and create a lifetime of memories with other RAC members. The trip starts in Japan, where you can explore Tokyo and Kyoto, before setting sail aboard Ponant’s L’Austral for a 10-day voyage between Osaka and Manila. You’ll visit many natural attractions and cultural and historical sites, including Hiroshima’s Peace Memorial Park and a medieval castle on Okinawa. Then it’s on to Manila, where old districts meet modern skyscrapers, to see Intramuros, the old walled city from Manila’s Spanish colonial period. This exclusive 16-day cruise departs Perth on 4 June and cabins are selling quickly. To secure your place speak to an RAC Travel consultant on 1300 655 898.

magical red earth country, the East Kimberley’s wonders include the natural artistry of the Bungle Bungle Range to the 320km Ord River and vast waters of Lake Argyle and Lake Kununurra. This North West wonderland is the setting for the jewel in the East Kimberley’s social calendar, the annual Argyle Diamonds Ord Valley Muster, a 10-day event that draws thousands of visitors to the area. The town of Kununurra has been hosting a muster of sorts since around 2001, starting out with a dinner for 500 in a cane field at award-winning rum
distillery The Hoochery, which is the oldest continuously operating distillery in Western Australia, owned by local farmer Spike Dessert III. This modest event has since blossomed into a celebration of the outback, held each May and now featuring more than 30 events. There’s a five-star dinner with a celebrity chef at a historic homestead, a boat trip along Lake Kununurra for breakfast under ghost gums, a rodeo and a corroboree celebrating the Waringarri culture and people. The big finale is the Kimberley Moon concert where much-loved performers take to the stage under the stars at an open-air amphitheatre. ▼

Chef Colin Fassnidge at the 2017 Muster.
Stepping off the plane at Kununurra Airport after a three-hour flight from Perth is like arriving on set for Baz Luhrmann’s 2008 film, Australia, which, appropriately, was filmed in the region. Our arrival coincides with what proves to be one of the most raucous nights of the Muster — the comedy show, which in 2017 was held at The Hoochery. The lively event saw acclaimed stand-up comedians, fresh from the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, perform on an outdoor stage before a nightly audience of 500. The comics shared the spotlight with hundreds of bugs that were attracted by the bright lights – some performers wore head nets to keep the pesky insects at bay.

Each year, a visiting celebrity chef flies in to the Muster for an afternoon of cooking demonstrations. The past chef line-up includes George Calombaris, Matt Moran and Poh Ling Yeow. For the 2017 Muster, My Kitchen Rules judge and chef Colin Fassnidge also prepared food for the Durack Homestead Dinner. The anticipation was palpable as we boarded a coach for the one-hour drive through bush to the Durack Homestead Museum, rebuilt from the pioneering Durack family’s late 1800s home. Four beautifully set long tables sat on the front lawn under
strings of twinkling lights, while Colin Fassnidge was hard at work with a team in the outdoor kitchen. It’s was an evening that even the celebrity chef will remember. “I’ve done a lot of events around the world and I think this is one of the best,” said Fassnidge. The dinner is unforgettable and, as it turns out, is just the start of more great meals. The next day we take a 10-minute boat trip down Lake Kununurra to a picturesque property owned by Russell and Sophie Cooke for breakfast. Springs such as Zebedee Springs at El Questro Wilderness Park and Molly Springs, about 30km from Kununurra, are popular day spots. Molly Springs is free to visit, while El Questro charges a park entry fee of $12 a day for adults. Flying in just for Muster week? A light plane or helicopter will cover the region’s vast distances much quicker than by land and there are plenty of tours to choose from. An Aviair Scenic Air Tour from Kununurra passes over some of the most spectacular landscapes in the world. At Purnululu National Park, we switch to a helicopter for a closer look at the Bungle Bungle Range. This Bungle Bungle Adventurer and Helicopter tour runs from April to October and costs $798 per adult. You can also explore the landscape on one of the Triple J Tours boat cruises ($185 for adults, $145 for children). Cruising the 55km to Lake Argyle, you will marvel at the spectacular scenery and flora and fauna, including elusive freshwater crocodiles. The Waringarri Cultural Tour ($85 for adults, $45 for children) opens the door on Miriwoong Aboriginal culture. Meanwhile, there’s plenty to keep visitors busy in town, too, including arts and crafts markets on Saturdays and the Sandalwood Factory, which sells all things sandalwood, as well as other local delights such as mango and boab jam.

There’s a buzz in the Kununurra air leading up to the Kimberley Moon Experience concert on the Saturday night. A glamorous evening gown or sharp dinner suit is essential for the Kimberley Fine Diamonds Corporate Circle, where guests are served a three-course meal followed by a knockout desserts table. For those seeking a more down to earth experience, bring your own rug and supplies – the more casual picnic option (priced between $109 and $235) is particularly good for families. Guests party until midnight under a shimmering blanket of Kimberley stars. It caps off a magical stay filled with incredible food, entertainment and local experiences where, without a doubt, the star of the show is the Kimberley. l

Wineglass Bay on the Freycinet Peninsula along Tasmania’s east coast.

Tempting Tassie A WA local winds his way through Tasmania’s lush valleys, forests and coastal regions, making surprising and delicious discoveries along the way. by Max Brearley
Great Eastern Drive Tasmania’s east coast is made for taking your time. As you meander 300km from Hobart to Eddystone Point each small township along the way has a drawcard. But Freycinet National Park is the jewel of this coast, the sweeping crescent of Wineglass Bay a photographer’s dream. To get there, start from Coles Bay, hike The Hazards range to a spectacular lookout and descend to explore the beach at Wineglass Bay. Expect a minimum two- to three-hour return
hike, although extending your visit to roam and maybe even have a picnic is well recommended. You can also explore the area by sea with Wineglass Bay Tours. Owner and skipper Duncan Sinclair’s well-worn commentary is peppered with sightings of local wildlife. “There’s always sea eagles,” he says. “We have dolphins all year round, the whale migration through the winter and then again in the spring when they migrate back down to Antarctica. We probably see

’ve done my share of straight-line road trips in WA, throwing the tent in the back of the Toyota and heading in one direction. But I’ve craved a trip that presents a world of possibilities without WA’s long distances. I found that in Tasmania, where country lanes wind and climb as you pass roadside stalls, hedgerows full of plump blackberries, deserted beaches and signs for freshly shucked oysters.

five to six hundred humpbacks a year and probably one to two hundred southern rights a year.” Freycinet Lodge, run by RAC Tasmania (RACT), sits within the Freycinet National Park. It makes for a stunning base to explore the area, with options to retreat to a deluxe spa cabin or lounge on your terrace with elevated views of Coles Bay. Just half an hour north of Freycinet, we uncover an emerging wine scene at the multi-use café-cum-wine-bar and gallery The Farm Shed in Bicheno. “Coal River and the Tamar Valley are known to most people,” says co-owner

Subi Mead. “But with 19 vineyards, we’re proclaiming it as a wine region in its own right.” Designed by celebrated Tasmanian architect Maria Gigney, The Farm Shed opened in December 2016 and espouses a community feel. Along with the wine bar, it has a coffee shop, design gallery and, for good measure, a post office in the back. Next stop is Binalong Bay, which marks the start of the coastal drive along the rugged Bay of Fires. The road becomes narrow, winding and more exposed with a low mist hanging over the coastal views of the red lichen-covered rocks to one
side, pastoral land to the other and a distinct edge of the world feeling.
All roads lead to Cradle Mountain Heading inland from the east coast, the opportunities to taste local produce continue. You can explore the Tamar Valley wineries, or head north-west and check out the seasonal ales at the Seven Sheds Brewery, or at Burnie, stop at Hellyer Road Distillery to test their single malt. Hotly tipped by locals is Pyengana Dairy, a fourth-generation farm where traditional English-style cheddar is made. Make sure you stop to get a taste.

From Cradle Mountain we head to the west coast for a stay at Strahan. As the departure point for Gordon River Cruises and the West Coast Wilderness Railway, which takes you under steam deep into old growth rainforest, Strahan is the access point for the beautiful wilderness region that dominates the south-west corner of Tasmania. Looping back inland from Strahan, the road winds and climbs steeply above Queenstown, with long rocky drops below. It takes longer to drive than the map might suggest.
Ultimately, the drawcard here lies inland, as the chorus of Tasmanians you meet will ask “you’ve been to ‘the mountain’ yet?”.

It’s just before dawn as we pull out from Cradle Mountain Hotel to head off for a short walk. A light mist hangs low and the headlights are on full as a wombat ambles across the tarmac – and we’re not even out of the car park yet. The road to Dove Lake is the starting point for many of Cradle Mountain’s twists and turns. As dawn breaks, the mist clears and cobwebs hang bejewelled with dew. I’m not prone to mysticism, but the awe of the manmade means little in Tasmania, while the majesty of nature is everything. Setting out to walk a short loop, the tracks are well marked with good advice about the degree of difficulty. For experienced hikers, it might seem obvious, but you should be prepared, even if you’re going for a relatively short walk. The weather in Tasmania is highly changeable, so you need to be dressed for all climates. Drinking water and sturdy footwear are a must. Back at Cradle Mountain Hotel, we visit the Wilderness Gallery and an exhibition of the work of the late Peter Dombrovskis. His wilderness photography played a key role in the battle to protect Tasmania’s wilderness in the politically charged protests of the ’70s and ’80s.

Lake St Clair, Australia’s deepest freshwater lake, has long held visitors in awe, along with nearby Mt Olympus, named for its imposing position within the landscape. Lake St Clair is also home to Pumphouse Point, a pumping station that has been converted into a spectacular luxury hotel. Our room hovers over the lake and includes an in-room larder. The property also features an honesty bar and roaring log fires, all of which complement the pristine location.

But we could afford it here and just fell in love with it,” he says. Skirting the coast from North to South Bruny, it’s easy to see why.

It’s a heady mix of art, food and polar history. There’s so much more that we’ve yet to see, but I suspect this is just the first of many adventures here. ●

What’s new
The latest news from the motoring world
Chitty clocks up 50 Hitch your wagon Station wagons, as alternatives to SUVs, continue to fly under many car buyers’ radars. The Subaru Levorg, Renault Megane wagon and Volkswagen Golf wagon are among the options, as is the larger Skoda Superb wagon, which has had a major upgrade. In September, standard extras were introduced to the Superb, including blind spot warning, rear cross traffic alert and Skoda’s emergency assist fatigue management system. Autonomous braking is standard, and all Skodas come with a five-year warranty.
In 2018, it will have been 50 years since the launch of the classic movie Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. In the movie, the car was built from an old racing car by an inventor named Caractacus Potts, who gave it the ability to fly and travel on water. In reality, six cars were built for the film, including one that could be driven as a regular road car. This car was built in 1967 by Alan Mann Racing and used a 3.0-litre Ford V6 engine. In 2011, the car was sold by its long-term England-based owner to the film director Sir Peter Jackson for about $1 million.
Ready & wheeling Many commentators have signalled a time when car ownership will fade and some of us will subscribe to a car-sharing service. However, Jaguar Land Rover reckons you’ll still own at least part of a car – the steering wheel. Jaguar Land Rover has launched a standalone device, which is roughly shaped like a steering wheel, to help people with their mobility needs. The device has been named the Sayer, after the legendary Jaguar designer Malcolm Sayer. It will be voice activated and, ahead of a journey, will be able to work out when you need to start getting ready, when a car needs to autonomously arrive at your door and will even advise what parts of the trip you might enjoy driving yourself. It sounds novel, but we reckon a smartphone wouldn’t be too far away from doing this already.
Car sales sliding After some signs of recovery in August 2017, new cars sales in WA have taken another dip. Sales figures in September were down 3.1 per cent compared with September 2016 and total sales for the year to 30 September (72,688) were also down compared with the same period in 2016 (76,971). The biggest selling vehicle in WA was the Toyota Hilux 4x4, followed by the Ford Ranger and Toyota Corolla. Most cars sold in WA are built in Japan, followed by Thailand and Korea. Test drive Audi S4
The Audi S4 is the Clark Kent of sports sedans – sensible on the outside, with quite a different character under that smartly cut suit. It looks almost as mild mannered as a regular A4 2.0 TDI, but if called upon, the S4 can progress at a brisker rate than a Porsche Boxster. This is partly due to the significant changes that have gone on under the bonnet. There’s still a 3.0-litre petrol V6 like there was in the old S4, but instead of the previous model’s supercharger, a twin-scroll turbocharger now nestles in the vee of the V6. This has resulted in increases in the engine’s outputs, with it making 260kW (up 15kW) and 500Nm (up 60Nm).
Compounding this extra capability is the fact that this new power plant is 14kg lighter than the old supercharged unit. In turn, this aids fuel economy, with the S4 sipping only 7.7L/100km in the ADR test cycle. Like other Audi A4s, the S4 has an impressive piece of safety tech that becomes active after the vehicle has come to a stop. Before exiting, passengers in the S4 are warned of other vehicles (including cyclists) approaching from the rear via a series of LED lights on the inside of the door. Although Audi is not the only manufacturer offering this technology, the fact that it’s available on the S4 is commendable given

its potential to help avoid catastrophic injuries in Australia’s increasingly congested cities. The S4 is also equipped to help avoid crashes where the vehicle is turning right across a stream of traffic, and is able to brake the vehicle if a dangerous situation is detected, such as a potential T-bone crash. The main competitors for the S4 are the MercedesAMG C 43 ($102,600 plus
on roads) and the BMW 340i ($89,900). The S4 sits between these two at $99,900. The Jaguar XE S is another seductive option in this company, needing $105,000 plus on roads. If you can afford it, the S4 is hugely compelling given its ability to be a serene, comfortable cruiser that can also shed its sensible suit to become a serious and almost super, luxury saloon. l

Land Rover Discovery For the first time since it was launched way back in 1989, the Land Rover Discovery has done away with the boxy shape that defined it for more than two decades. However, while the new Discovery takes on those design cues shared by the smaller Discovery Sport and the on-road biased Range Rover Sport, it retains that astounding off-road capability for which it’s renowned. With its air suspension raised, the new Discovery has a ground clearance of 283mm, which compares to the Landcruiser 200 Series at 220mm. It can also wade through water up to 900mm deep. In fact, what limits the Discovery’s ability to wade through water is its tendency to
float at the rear. Even if it does go a little deeper than recommended, the Discovery is able to extract water from the air intake to minimise engine damage. But the most notable aspect about the new Discovery is the tremendous reduction in the vehicle’s weight when compared with the previous model. The new one is a whopping 480kg lighter than its equivalent predecessor. The dramatic slim-down is due to Land Rover’s extensive use of aluminium in the vehicle’s monocoque architecture, as well as other light materials such as the composite tailgate. The all-alloy Ingenium diesel engine also contributes to the added lightness, which

in turn benefits the Disco’s performance and efficiency. For example, the entry level Discovery Td4 S with the 2.0-litre, 132kW/430Nm engine weighs 2.1 tonnes, and yet in the combined cycle it uses only 6.3L/100km. A Toyota Corolla uses more petrol than that. Pricing starts at $72,400 drive away for the Td4 S, but Land Rover reckons the biggest selling variant will be the Sd4 SE, which has a 177kW/500Nm version of the 2.0-litre turbo
diesel and will cost $93,800 drive away. If that’s still not enough, there’s the Td6, which has 190kW and 600Nm. But unless you’re towing something really big, the performance of the Sd4’s 500Nm is ample, especially given the vehicle’s lighter weight. The fit and finish of the Discovery is neat and luxurious, although seven seats aren’t standard and you’ll need to spend extra for those. l December / January 2018 Horizons 53

Mazda CX-5 Maxx Sport Even Mazda was surprised with the runaway success of the CX-5 when it was first launched in 2012. It is still the biggest-selling medium-sized SUV in the country and makes up one quarter of all Mazda’s Australian sales. So it had every reason to be cautious about fixing something that wasn’t broken. Still, when the extensively revised CX-5 was launched in April 2017, it wasn’t before time. Really, what we have here is a significantly redesigned body and upgraded interior, some important new safety gear and a new variant that’s wedged in the middle of the range called the Touring. Drivetrains are as they were in the previous model,
which is not a bad thing at all. These comprise the 2.0-litre petrol in the entry level models, the 2.5-litre petrol and the 2.2-litre turbo diesel. Avoid the 2.0-litre petrol though – its fuel consumption is only marginally better than the 2.5, but the difference in performance and refinement is marked. An important new addition to the CX-5 is autonomous braking, which is standard equipment on all models in the range. Further, the auto braking feature also works while the vehicle is reversing. A rear camera, rear cross traffic alert and blind spot monitoring are all also standard across the range – not bad for a base model.

However, the boot is still not the most cavernous of the medium SUV bunch, with both of its biggest competitors (Hyundai Tucson and Toyota RAV4) offering slightly more cargo space. In the rest of the interior, the majority of the hard black plastics of the previous model have been replaced with softer touch materials. Rear air vents are now in all models except the entry level Maxx, and the availability of a
powered tailgate in the higher spec models is another new addition. Pricing for the CX-5 starts at $32,330 for the front wheel drive Maxx, but we tested the Maxx Sport AWD, which is the most popular model. With its impressive standard safety gear, sharp driving dynamics and revised interior, the new CX-5 makes an excellent case for keeping its crown as segment leader. l

Hyundai i30 This new, fourth-generation i30 was launched in May 2016, and is the most important new model Hyundai has launched in recent years. Hyundai had to get it right, and right for Australia. That meant getting the pricing correct, making the safety package among the best in the segment and bringing the interior up to premium small car standards. So, after sorting out these basics, Hyundai’s Australiabased suspension tuning mob spent five months driving it toand-fro across the outback in the middle of summer to ensure the steering, ride and handling would suit Australian tastes and conditions. The i30 variants are arranged in two model streams – comfort and sports.
The comfort models comprise the Active, Elite and Premium grades, all of which can be had with either a 2.0-litre, naturally aspirated petrol engine, or 1.6-litre turbo diesel. The sports models are designated SR and get the same gutsy 150kW, 265Nm 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine that’s in the Elantra SR. The i30 SR models comprise the entry level SR and the SR Premium, which brings with it a sunroof and front parking sensors among other features. For that, you’ll need $37,630. With their multi-link rear suspension, the SR models are an enticing, well sorted warm hatch offering at a bargain price. Indeed, it’s much closer to a Volkswagen Golf
Hyundai i30 specifications Price Engine Power Torque Claimed fuel economy ANCAP safety rating

GTI than the $15,000 price difference would suggest. The entry level variant is the i30 Active manual, at $22,990 drive away. For a base model, the value proposition here is astounding. The Active gets an eight-inch touchscreen, a rear camera, sat nav, Bluetooth, digital radio, alloy wheels and compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. What’s not standard across the range is autonomous
braking, which you only get on the Elite and Premium models. Another area for improvement is the warranty, which at five years is better than most, but we don’t see why that can’t be extended to seven years, given that’s what Hyundai’s subsidiary Kia offers. The new i30’s interior is classy and restrained with mostly high-quality surfaces and good sound deadening – it even passes the door-closing ‘thunk’ test. l December / January 2018 Horizons 55

Q
I have a 2004 Mazda 6 that has served me faithfully for more than 12 years. Recently I noticed that on cold days the engine vibrates excessively when starting. Once the engine is warm the vibrations disappear. A friend suspects my engine mounts have failed and need to be replaced. I would have thought that if this were the case, the vibrations would persist even when the engine is at normal operating temperature. Why would the vibrations disappear once the engine is warm? What else could be a contributing factor?
Paulus Sui, Victoria Park
A: There are a number of
possible causes for this cold-only vibration, including faulty fuel injectors or spark plugs. If either or both of these are compromised, the result could be less than optimal combustion, which in turn could be causing the vibration. While a faulty
engine mount could cause excessive vibration, we agree that the vibration would be likely to continue after the engine had warmed up. In any case, we would advise having your vehicle checked by a qualified technician to ascertain the exact cause of the vibration.
Q
My dad told me to never turn the wheels of a car while it is stationary, as this damages the tyres. Is he correct? Thank you for your advice. Patricia, Maylands
A: Turning the steering
wheel when a car is stationary can cause unnecessary wear to the steering mechanism. The loading placed on the steering system can especially be felt in vehicles without power-assisted steering, where considerable force is sometimes needed to be applied by the driver to change the angles of the front wheels.
Q
I have a 2009 D40 Navara 2.5 turbo diesel that is stalling when the weather is cold. It will start, then stop and start again, then stop. I have had the suction control valve replaced and computer reset, but there has been no improvement. This stalling stops once the engine is warmed up and it then runs all day without stalling. The stalling does not happen if I start the car in the middle of the day when the temperature is warm. Graham Burleigh

It sounds like this problem is related to the vehicle’s cold starting system, which could mean problems with a number of components. These could include the glow plugs, fuel injectors or a sensor. However, given this sounds highly inconvenient and potentially dangerous, we would recommend taking your vehicle to a diesel specialist who could diagnose exactly what the problem is and rectify it.
See page 81 for terms and conditions of entry.

Member Lounge Five things you shouldn’t forget these holidays Last year, more than 6003 metropolitan homes reported a burglary during the festive months of November to January, according to WA Police crime statistics. Often it’s the simple things we forget during this busy time that can make our homes a target. Take these steps to ensure your home and property is safe this Christmas:

WA’s summer heat can put pressure on some of your car’s essential systems, components and parts. To avoid a summer breakdown, keep an eye on coolant and fluid levels, your battery and tyres.
Coolant levels: Most cars have a translucent
Dispose of gift packaging carefully so you’re not advertising new contents to thieves. Break it down and put it inside bins out of sight or wait until bin day to dispose of it. If you’ve received big ticket items, check your level of insurance cover.
coolant overflow tank with markings on the side indicating where the level should be. In older cars you may have to check the level by looking inside the radiator. Only check your cooling system when the engine is cold and never remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot. Check your coolant level regularly and only use the recommended coolant type for your car.
CHRISTMAS LIGHTS
Other fluid levels: To ensure safe and
DON’T ADVERTISE
Don’t feed Christmas lighting extension leads through partially open windows. Burglars will take advantage of any opportunity to easily access your home.
VISIBLE GIFTS Make sure your Christmas tree isn’t visible from the street. Being able to see your beautifully wrapped gifts may be tempting for would-be thieves.
GOING AWAY Make arrangements to have someone collect your mail and look after your garden so it’s less obvious you’re not home.

Help your car keep its cool
LOCK UP Secure all entry points to your home, including access to your backyard. Check your windows and doors are locked and if you don’t have one already, consider a home security system.
For a free in-home security consultation, contact RAC Security on 1300 132 735 or enquire online at rac.com.au/security.
reliable driving, ask a mechanic to check that all the fluid levels are topped up including those for the transmission, brakes and if it’s a manual, the clutch fluid. Make sure they check the washer fluid as well. If your car needs a service this summer, visit rac.com.au/service.
Battery: Check your battery terminals regularly to ensure they are clean and tight. Make sure the battery is secure. If it hasn’t been replaced in three or more years consider a replacement as battery failure often occurs without warning.
Tyres: Heat can affect tyre pressure. By ensuring your tyres are always inflated to the recommended pressure levels you can extend their life. You should regularly check your tyres for signs of wear and tear. If you do need new tyres, RAC’s mobile tyre service can come to you – visit rac.com.au/tyres. Good preparation and regular servicing should help keep your holiday driving adventures on track, but in the event of a vehicle breakdown, call RAC Roadside Assistance on 13 11 11.

To help keep you safe on the roads this summer, we’ve included an easy-to-use tyre tread gauge with this edition of Horizons (find it behind your magazine address sheet). Use this handy little tool to check you’re not putting yourself at risk with tyres that are too worn and that they meet the legal 1.5mm tread requirement. We know tyre safety is often overlooked, so please take two minutes to check the condition of yours. If you do need new tyres, RAC Tyres has a mobile service that can come to your home or work to fit in with your plans, plus members get 10 per cent off. In a first for Western Australia, you can now lay-by your holiday at RAC Parks and Resorts. The new payment system allows guests to book their holiday and pay it off in weekly, fortnightly or monthly instalments before they go (for bookings of more than $200). Lay-by payments will make it easier for West Australians to plan and budget for their holiday, says RAC Executive General Manager Brand and Tourism, Tony Pickworth. “Being able to pay your holiday off in regular instalments, rather than just putting it on the credit card with all the related fees, makes good financial sense. “It also helps holiday makers book ahead for popular places during times
LAY-BY
like school holidays, rather than missing available out as they don’t have the money up front. We expect the new system will make it more affordable for our members and West Australians to holiday in our own incredible back yard.” The holiday lay-by system is available at all five RAC Parks and Resorts: Exmouth Cape Holiday Park, Ningaloo Reef Resort, Monkey Mia Dolphin Resort, Cervantes Holiday Park and Busselton Holiday Park. Members save up to 20 per cent on bookings at all RAC Parks and Resorts. Book online at racparksandresorts.com.au.
World Phone® is an award-winning travel app that allows you to make and receive calls on your mobile phone while overseas at low rates, and it’s now available to RAC members as a special package. Members get exclusive access to discounted World Phone® prepaid packages that include: ● up to 1000 outbound and inbound calling minutes ● a dedicated travel phone number that you can divert your personal number to, so family and friends can call you as they would at home. World Phone® is available for iPhone and Android. To find out more, visit worldphone.io/rac.
Free hand clappers for RAC Christmas Pageant RAC Little Legends Club® is giving away free hand clappers to its members at this year’s RAC Christmas Pageant on Saturday 2 December. To get your hand clappers on pageant night, make sure you sign your little ones up to RAC’s Little Legends Club® for free at RAC Little Legends characters at last year’s RAC Christmas Pageant.
rac.com.au/kids then find one of our helpers who’ll be walking along St Georges Terrace before the Pageant starts, to claim your hand clapper. What better way to cheer on the floats and get into the Christmas spirit.

‘Road rules’ for mariners At 12,889km, Western Australia has by far the longest mainland coastline of any state. It’s no wonder we’re also a state of boaties, claiming the highest rate of boat ownership in the country – 19 per cent of us live in a household with at least one boat, according to a Roy Morgan report released in 2017. With so many Western Australians out on the water, it’s essential our skippers know exactly how to safely stay out of each other’s way. When you’re out on the water this summer, remember the following rules from the Department of Transport to avoid a collision:
Approaching head on Both boats must veer to their starboard side (right) and allow the approaching boat to pass on the port side (left).
Geraldton hosts international classic car rally About 150 beautifully restored historic cars made the journey to Geraldton in September for Rally West, an annual national event, hosted in WA this year by the Veteran Car Club of WA. Over seven days, Geraldton was buzzing with veteran cars and their owners as the city hosted the event for the first time. Rally West attracted about 300 participants from across Australia and as far away as New Zealand, the USA and the UK. RAC was a major sponsor of the event along with the City of Greater Geraldton. RAC Sponsorship Manager Carina McBurnie said with the club’s roots as a lobby group for car enthusiasts, RAC was pleased to be part of this major veteran car event in WA. “While RAC is today moving towards a new and different future of mobility and motoring innovation, we take great pride in our heritage as WA’s original car club.” Among the historic vehicles on display at Rally West was a 1981 Ford Escort panel van that was used as an RAC Patrol vehicle. RAC recently unveiled a display of heritage items at the Motor Museum of WA, including a 1928 Matchless Motorbike and Sidecar combination used by RAC’s first Patrols. RAC members receive 20 per cent off museum admission.
Power-driven boats crossing paths Boat B has boat A on its starboard side (right) as it’s approaching, which gives boat A the right of way. But in the event that boat B does not give way, boat A must act to avoid a collision.
A B
Overtaking You can overtake a boat on either side, but you must keep well clear of it as you’re overtaking.
Finally, remember the golden rule: Look to the right, give way to the right, turn to the right and stay to the right. And always keep right in channels. Skippers can find more information about marine safety rules at transport.wa.gov.au/imarine. To make sure your boat is protected on land and on the water, visit rac.com.au/boat to get a boat insurance quote.

Why miss words if you don’t have to?
This hearing aid works for your ears how a contact lens works for your eyes: improves your hearing without anyone knowing it’s there. Introducing a hearing aid that is designed for your individual hearing loss and is custom made for your exact ear size and comfort here in Australia. It’s so small it fits right inside your ear canal, and that makes it virtually invisible for anyone else to see. Latest Technology Despite its miniature size, the sound processing computer inside some of our models is so fast it supports the most sophisticated advances in digital hearing technology to date. It samples the listening environment 20,000 times per second and makes automatic adjustments to the sound it delivers to your ear. Our high tech models in the range are designed to identify non-speech noise and the steady hum of background conversations then reduces those sounds 30 DAY EXCHANGE GUARANTEE

Bottle Bay, Francois Peron National Park, Shark Bay region
Lucky Bay, near Esperance.
Surrounded by the dramatic reds cliffs, white sands and blue waters of this spectacular coastline, Bottle Bay is a small beach camp site and one of four bush camps in the national park. It has few facilities so campers will need to be self-sufficient.
Tourism Western Australia
Hamelin Bay Holiday Park, Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park, Margaret River region
National park camp sites on the coast Osprey Bay, Cape Range National Park, Exmouth region The camp site is located on a rocky shelf next to a small sandy beach. It was redeveloped in 2015 and has more than 40 sites, along with shelters, picnic tables and a sunset viewing platform. Snorkel, kayak or fish off the beach, or explore the gorges of Cape Range National Park.
Cape Le Grand, Cape Le Grand National Park, Esperance region This is a great location for swimming, kayaking and fishing. The camp site in Cape Le Grand National Park near Esperance, has the 17km Cape Le Grand Coastal Trail running past it. There’s a camp kitchen with a gas barbecue, and the showers have solar water heating. The campsite is 55km south-east of Esperance.
Neds, Cape Range National Park, Exmouth region
Four Mile, Fitzgerald River National Park, Ravensthorpe Shire
Neds is a small camp site 48km from Exmouth set on a narrow beach along the Coral Coast. It’s nestled behind sands dunes, which provide some protection from the coastal winds, and the site also has some shade. There is access to Ningaloo Reef from the beach and walking trails that lead to lookouts with sweeping views of the region.
West of Esperance and not far from Hopetoun, Four Mile is a popular camp site located on a picturesque beach. It’s a great spot for whale watching and there are attractions within the national park to explore. It has picnic tables and gas barbecues and is accessible by two-wheel drive, but there is no fresh water.
Skippy Rock, Stokes National Park, Esperance region
Lucky Bay, Cape Le Grand National Park, Esperance region
There are good fishing spots for keen anglers close to the Skippy Rock camp site. The site is west of Esperance in Stokes National Park and is a small, basic site only accessible by four-wheel drive. There is no water, so campers should bring enough drinking water for their stay.
This recently redeveloped camp site, 60km south-east of Esperance, is in a bay along with what is arguably WA’s most beautiful stretch of coast. It has a camp kitchen with a gas barbecue and showers. As with the Cape Le Grand camp site, it has the Cape Le Grand Coastal Trail passing the site.
This large and popular holiday park's accommodation ranges from from cottages to camp sites. There are plenty of water and land-based activities, from diving to fishing and bushwalking on the Cape to Cape Track. Hamelin Bay is also home to a large number of resident stingrays.
Waychinicup Inlet, Waychinicup National Park, Albany region Set on a spectacular coastline dotted with striking granite rock formations, the Waychinicup River inlet has a small camp site that is accessible by two-wheel drive. The coast here is rocky with dense vegetation and is a great spot for bushwalking and rock climbing. The inlet is 65km east of Albany.
Conto, LeeuwinNaturaliste National Park, Margaret River region The upgraded Conto campground has a large number of sites with great facilities for campers and caravanners. The sheltered sites are among the coastal peppermint trees. Conto Springs Beach is an ideal spot to fish or surf and the Cape to Cape walking track is close by. Correction: The Kalamunda Artisan Market (formerly Kalamunda Village Market) is held on the first Saturday of every month, not Sunday as stated in October/November’s 10 Best.
