RAC bstreetsmart to help deliver young drivers a serious road safety lesson On 5 April, RAC will deliver a free road safety event at Perth Arena. Now in its seventh year, RAC bstreetsmart is a road safety initiative for Year 10, 11 and 12 students and provides them with the opportunity to see real emergency personnel respond to the victims in a crash re-enactment – the way they do far too often in real life. Delivering RAC bstreetsmart would not be possible without the help of WA Police, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services, St John Ambulance and Royal Perth Hospital. These organisations have amazing people, who do amazing things and who witness first-hand the devastating impact of road crashes. RAC bstreetsmart ensures that students hear about the tragic impact of road trauma, and the trail of heartache it leaves for families, friends and the broader community. At last year’s event, more than 8500 students from 94 schools watched RAC bstreetsmart, the biggest attendance we’ve ever had. This year, we are expecting even more students who will see and hear about the devastating effects of road trauma. Seeing and hearing about the impact of road trauma is vital. It is vital because it could help save a life or stop a serious injury on our roads. RAC bstreetsmart is about encouraging students to think about the choices they make when they drive or get into a vehicle. Speeding, drink and drug driving, driver fatigue, inattention and distraction remain the leading causes of death and injury on our roads. These choices include the inevitable time when a split-second decision is needed – like whether you’ll get into a vehicle with
a drunk driver, whether you’ll drive others around when you’ve been drinking or make the mistake of sending a text message or using social media while behind the wheel. In making this decision, we want young drivers to remember that their actions and choices could change their life, and the lives of the ones they love. There is no disputing that RAC bstreetsmart sends a tough message; at times the event is very confrontational. But it needs to be. This is because young drivers are continually over-represented in road fatalities. Tragically, 17 to 24-year-olds make up 21 per cent of WA road fatalities, yet account for just 11 per cent of the population. Three-quarters of these deaths are young men. Too many people, too many young people, are dying or being seriously injured on our roads. RAC bstreetsmart aims to reduce road deaths and injuries of young people by graphically demonstrating the consequences of road crashes and promoting safe behaviour as drivers, riders and passengers.

ON THE ROAD
Campervans reported the largest growth rate of any vehicle type in Australia.
Members Robert and Lyn Uppill met up with some ‘locals’ at RAC’s Exmouth Cape Holiday Park.
MEMBER MAIL Electric incentives
The UK government has committed to an expansion of electric cars with more roadside chargers, grants to act as incentives for purchases and tax breaks for company car drivers. The Chancellor Philip Hammond said that a £400 million fund would also be created to boost the number of chargers on the road network. Even though it is claimed that Britain lags behind other European countries in the adoption of green vehicles, it is many years ahead of the Australian Government’s electric car policy engagement considering the inevitable
WIN
free roadside assistance for one year
large-scale introduction of electric vehicles (EVs) by 2025. Now that Australia no longer manufactures cars, we will have little or no control over what power systems drives our automobiles. As Europe and Japan prepare for the wholesale introduction of EVs, will Australia be operating catch up policy on charging hubs and green vehicle subsidies? What we don’t want is for the government to make policy on the run, which will inevitably end up as another NBN type fiasco. To avoid this, serious consideration of the EV issue needs to start immediately. Stuart Coleman
Easy ebikes
I bought an ebike earlier this year as I am 70 years old and was struggling with my normal bike because of arthritis, especially in my hands and wrists. I’m also a bit over riding up hills. Since I’ve bought the ebike I am back riding and loving it. For people like myself it makes all the difference between getting out in the fresh air and exercising as opposed to staying home and maybe not doing as much.

News in brief from the RAC & beyond
Snapshot
Rating ourselves on the roads We asked members about their understanding of WA’s road rules and their observations of other drivers applying the rules on our roads.
Parts of the Mitchell Freeway extension used recycled, crushed glass for its road.
WA’s recycled roads India is a country known for its potholed roads; however, Jambulingam Street in Chennai is different. Jambulingam Street is made of polymer glue from shredded waste plastic – one of India’s first ‘plastic’ roads – and although several years old, it is in perfect condition. Using recycled waste to build roads is a growing trend around the world. In Australia, construction waste like glass and rubble and even printer toner is used to build some of our highways. More than 1000 tonnes of crushed, crumbed rubber from waste tyres has been used by WA’s Main Roads to lay roads in the Goldfields, while parts of the Mitchell Freeway extension near Wanneroo Road include recycled, crushed glass. Construction and demolition waste such as plastic and reclaimed asphalt is
also being used – the famous Taj on Swan site at Peppermint Grove was ground up into road base, with rubble supplied to local governments as a base for minor roads. “We look for recycled materials that maintain or improve the performance of the road,” says Louis Bettini, Main Roads WA Principal Advisor on Sustainability. “Certain plastic is better suited for where there’s heavy traffic and where vehicles are turning, and there are other plastics better for straight roads where there are fewer vehicles.” “Using waste to create roads means we conserve our current stocks of gravel, limestone and bitumen, which are unrenewable sources of materials.” Bettini says there will be an even greater level of recycled content in our roads in the future.
The top five road rules WA drivers see others breaking: 1. Speeding 2. Failure to indicate 3. Tailgating 4. Using a mobile phone 5. Running red or amber lights

Crash tests in your pocket Before you buy a new car, check how it rates for safety on a new app developed by the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP). ANCAP crash tests new cars available for sale in Australia, giving them a star rating from one to five according to occupant and pedestrian protection and collision avoidance capabilities. Downloading the app before you go car shopping can help you make an informed choice. You can find and compare new car ratings and see how your current car stacks up. The app also lets you save notes and photos as you shop around and receive the latest ratings and car safety news. In the event of a crash, you can also keep a log of details to assist with reporting
the crash and making an insurance claim. When you consider that you have twice the chance of being killed or seriously injured in a 3-star ANCAP rated car compared to a 5-star car, putting safety at the top of your new car shopping list becomes even more important. The ANCAP safety app is available for iPhone and Android. Safety ratings are also available for a range of used cars through the annual Used Car Safety Ratings program, and the latest ratings are now available. If you’re in the market for a used car, see our 10 safest used cars under $10,000 on page 18.

The Bunbury-based RAC Rescue helicopter It’s been a year since the RAC Rescue helicopter began operations out of its Bunbury base, with the State Government recently confirming ongoing funding for the Bunbury base and service. It’s good news for WA. Having both the Perth and Bunbury helicopters
operational means more than 90 per cent of WA’s population have access to 24/7 emergency helicopter service when needed. The RAC Rescue helicopters can be airborne and on their way within 15 minutes of receiving a call-out, delivering life-saving aid to remote
and difficult-to-access areas within the vital first hour following a medical emergency. The RAC Rescue helicopters are managed by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services, funded by the State Government and sponsored by RAC.

f you’re wondering who the happy face is on the cover of this edition of Horizons, her name is Evie and she’s been voted RAC’s pet superstar. Evie the three-year-old cavoodle was the winner of our pet insurance photo competition. After making the shortlist, our Facebook followers voted for Evie to feature on the cover of this edition of Horizons. As well as being our Horizons cover star, Evie has won 12 months of RAC Pet Insurance and a professional studio shoot with award-winning animal photographer Alex Cearns at Houndstooth Studio. Our pet photo competition attracted an overwhelming response, with pet owners sharing more than 4000 photos of their much-loved animal companions. There’s no doubt pets occupy a special place in our lives. They cheer us up when we’re down, keep us active and love us unconditionally. And if the number of photos West Aussies are

I
magine this: the young driver in your family has just found their first car and they’re excited. It’s a 2000 model Subaru Impreza and from the outside it looks perfect – silver, apparently in excellent condition and with a low price. It’s what they can’t see that’s the problem. The 2000 Subaru Impreza only scores one-star in the Used Car Safety Ratings, which means an inexperienced driver is 10 times more likely to be killed or seriously injured in a crash than if they were driving a used car with a five-star rating.
The latest Used Car Safety Ratings released by RAC are essential reading for anyone considering buying a used car. What the ratings show is that there is a surprising variation in the level of safety provided by popular used cars. Each year Monash University’s Accident Research Centre examines the police reports from millions of real-world car crashes and scores those vehicles on their safety credentials. All used cars on the list were manufactured between 1987 and 2014 and account for 95 per cent of all registered passenger and light
commercial vehicles manufactured during that period, including light, small, medium and large cars, SUVs, people movers and commercial vans and utes. The extent of the research makes it a very useful and comprehensive tool for parents, young drivers and anyone looking to purchase a second-hand vehicle, especially with safety ratings varying significantly between older vehicles, says RAC Manager Vehicles and Sustainability, Alex Forrest. “Simply put, choosing a vehicle that performed well in the Used Car Safety

Behind the New Museum It’s been years in the making, but WA’s New Museum is very much underway and scheduled to open in 2020. That means staff are dealing with unusual challenges like how to hang a blue whale... by Bronwyn Wilkie

id you know that the tongue of a blue whale can weigh as much as an elephant? If you consider the sheer enormity of the skeleton that such a tongue belongs to, and the feat of engineering required to suspend it indoors, you start to understand the weird and wonderful everyday challenges facing those responsible for developing the New Museum for WA. Creative Director Bliss Jensen took us behind the scenes of this colossal $428.3 million redevelopment project, scheduled to open in 2020.
A big and complex task After many years working towards the funding and approval to build the New Museum, the architectural plans are in the final stages and the museum team is in the internal design phase, in particular bringing to life the exhibitions and galleries to wow the public. While the 2020 opening date seems a comfortable two years away, Jensen says the scale of this project is so huge that the 25-strong content team will need every minute between now and then to get the job completed in time for the ribbon cutting.

Millions of precious objects The size of the museum’s collection, much of which is currently stored in
a specially designed and climatecontrolled warehouse, is staggering and diverse. “We have more than eight million items in our collection,” says Jensen, citing everything from vintage cars to trucks, dinosaur bones, delicate paperbased manuscripts and even a red British telephone box. “There are all sorts of logistics and decisions we have to make with the exhibition designers about how things can be displayed," explains Jensen. “That involves everything from the engineering requirements of rigging and mounting the blue whale to whether objects are too delicate to be displayed upright and whether they need special lighting considerations. But it’s really exciting to see the final ‘wow’ moment when it’s in.” ▼

“This is one of the largest museum redevelopments in the Southern Hemisphere, and the volume and scope of the project is unprecedented in Australia for creating a museum,” Jensen says. As well as the size of the project and budget, Jensen says what makes the project unique in museum terms is “the breadth of the collections we’re working with, being from natural, social and cultural collections as well as the stories relating to an entire state, rather than a city museum. We’re also working with spaces that bring together a mix of heritage and contemporary spaces.”

A big museum needs quite a few people with some interesting skills to get it into shape. There is a team of 20 keeping busy behind the scenes, including: l Project director l Creative directors l Exhibition team leaders l Curators l Project officers l Engagement officers l Audience advocates l Learning team l Conservation team l Preparators l Exhibition design services
teams l Researchers l Marketing, communications,
research, online and digital teams.
That research has seen the museum talking to the WA community to find out what they want. On the wish list was to see more WA Aboriginal culture and stories, both contemporary and historical, plus more about the species in our oceans. There were also requests for a few old favourites seen by many a WA school kid, including dinosaurs, butterflies and mineral displays and the star of the show – the adolescent blue whale skeleton. Jensen says the skeleton spans 24m, weighs 4003kg and is very old and fragile, adding to the challenge of hanging and display.

The finishing touches
Mineral specimens are carefully stored in boxes.
The art of storytelling With so many objects in the collection, perhaps even more challenging than how to display objects is what to display, and then how each of those displays or galleries work together. “This is very much a state museum and will be primarily sharing stories of WA,” Jensen says. “There are so many extraordinary stories out there that the curatorial teams are constantly having to make tough decisions about the significance of objects and their importance to the community. “Sometimes community preferences will lead us in a direction to make those decisions, so it’s great when we’ve got our audience advocates on board to help with visitor and engagement research.”
When everything is finally installed, Jensen and the team will have to complete a couple of last-minute jobs before they can relax and enjoy opening day. “We’ll be cleaning showcases and making sure everything is spick and span, as well as tweaking the lighting and road-testing the digital, multimedia and interactive displays,” she says. “I think visitors will be surprised when they come and see the New Museum. There’s very much a focus on people, interactivity and stories about the future.”l

My name is Sue Green and I am very happily wearing hearing aids that have shown me just how important is good hearing. I’d been taking my Dad to see the audiologists at Brad’s clinic for a few years, and I got the message loud and clear that the earlier you start wearing hearing aids, the better your hearing outcomes are likely to be – for the rest of your life. Dad has had hearing aids for years and only started wearing them regularly in recent times, and he has essentially left it too late, I can see that. For the rest of us, having a family member who needs just about everything repeated, the TV up louder than we find comfortable and mixed messages can be very challenging. Even with this personal experience, it still took me about 12 months of actually acknowledging the validity of what was being said to Dad before I put my hand up for a fitting. I think I had to overcome the thought that I was too young for hearing aids. The free test and 2 weeks’ home trial was a real bonus with lots of flexibility, and first up I noticed I’d started enjoying music more than I had in years. The changes were

subtle, but great. I found that watching TV wasn’t a matter of turning the volume up, but more about speech clarity so that I understood dialogue and could follow the story. Previously speech sounded like a lot of muffled, mumbling nonsense which saw me fall asleep in front of the screen. I even tested my hearing aids by taking them out and trying to understand to appreciate that yes, they make a huge difference. We attend quite a number of family functions which have improved enormously because I can converse with confidence. On a recent annual trip way down south with my former netball friends, even in the back seat of the car I could join in on the conversation, in spite of road noise as we drove along. In previous years I’d sit and say nothing and feel isolated because I couldn’t constantly be asking for what was said to be repeated. This time around I was right back in the thick of things and positively enjoying life, a member of the team again. From my first-hand experience of hearing loss in loved ones, I know I have started at the right age and won’t be causing this frustration to those close to me. Sue Green

On a trip to Cervantes you can get away from it all without travelling a long way from Perth.

t was the best two-day Western Australian road trip you could think of. The ingredients? One of our most scenic driving roads, a father and son, some fishing rods and sand boards, an idyllic destination and one of the very last Australian-built Holden Commodores. Our destination was an easy two and a half hours’ drive north of Perth along the spectacular Indian Ocean Drive to the coastal town of Cervantes. The tragedy that has beset this road in recent times was not lost on me. Its seemingly endless curves and undulations demand respect and attention, especially in the late afternoon, when we travelled it. But aside from arriving at our destination safely, there were other rich rewards for taking it easy and enjoying the ride. With the lad alongside me, a fiery sunset sizzling into the ocean and the deserted road arcing over the dunes ahead, this became a moment I would always remember – especially as this road trip was from behind the wheel of one of the best Australian cars ever made. Specifically, this was an SS Commodore, in what Holden calls ‘Slipstream Blue’ paint, with the 6.2-litre, 304kW LS3 V8 and a six-speed manual gearbox. This one was from the last six months of production before the factory closed
on 20 October 2017, and was the quintessential expression of the modern, affordable and locally built car. It was ideally suited to cruising this wide open road. The overnight trip would have us park our motor for the night at the newly renovated RAC Cervantes Holiday Park. The after-hours check-in system worked seamlessly and we were soon inside our two-bedroom villa, which was just what you want from a beachside holiday stay – clean, bright and within a stone’s throw of the ocean. As it was late, dinner was kept simple and we cooked up some sausages on the barbeque on the verandah outside our villa, made some hot dogs and got some rest. If you’re eating out, though,
The Commodore LS3 V8, was introduced to the range in September 2015 to see it out to the end of production in October 2017. For the $55,250 drive away price, it’s a unique driving experience which blends the sound and rear-drive performance of a V8 muscle car with state-of-the-art ride and handling, modern safety gear and an up-to-date infotainment system. It makes 570Nm of torque, which can shove you in the back with the gusto a grumpy rugby player. The very last SS Commodore came with new additions including sat nav, a head-up display and new alloy wheel designs.

the Lobster Shack is worth a visit. Members also get a 10 per cent discount at Cervantes Bar and Bistro. The following day we were up early to explore the local sights and the activities on offer. Fishing was first on the list. We headed to Cervantes jetty, which is reputed to be good for herring, bream and skippy, but it was a little windy and conditions weren’t ideal. Though we came away empty handed, it was an enjoyable way to start the day. About two kilometres out of Cervantes township we visited Lake Thetis, one of only a few places in the world with living marine stromatolites. Referred to as ‘living fossils’, they’re one of the earliest forms of life to evolve on earth. But without doubt, the drawcard of this region is the world-famous Pinnacles. The ability to simply drive your car between the stunning limestone formations on a designated path is particularly special at such an iconic site. It’s something all Western Australians should take the opportunity to enjoy. When we visited, the big SS Commodore V8 prompted almost as much interest as the Pinnacles, with some visitors taking selfies with the big Aussie sedan and others having a sit in it. The Commodore still has a presence few other cars can match. On the way home from Cervantes, we took our time, stopping in at Lancelin for The Pinnacles in the Nambung National Park.
some sand boarding in the legendary dunes right beside the town. There are opportunities to hire sand boards in the town or from the base of the dunes to surf the white giants, or if you’re feeling even more daring, you can rent a quad bike. Bringing some experience of the latter is strongly recommended. If you’re not familiar with Lancelin, you will need to carefully follow a map to find the access road to the dunes, as it is not obviously signposted. However, the sight that besets you as you enter the parking area at the foot of the dunes is absolutely breathtaking. If you’re a keen sandboarder, the trip to Lancelin alone is worthwhile. When we visited on a Saturday, there was plenty of room on the dunes for everyone to get some sand boarding in. If you’re daring, you can ‘carve up’ the dunes with some sweeping turns in the sand. Scaling the huge dunes again for

another downhill run will test your fitness – there are no chair lifts here! Four-wheel driving in the dunes is also an option, but you’ll have to ensure you’re well equipped – with both training and vehicle recovery equipment – to ensure you stay safe in the sand. From Lancelin, its 127km to Perth, which will take about one hour and 50 minutes. We were on the road for home well before the light started to fade, with many happy memories from our special weekender. l
RAC Cervantes Holiday Park Amy Risinger, who manages the RAC Cervantes Holiday Park with her partner Ryan O’Rourke, says that since the park’s extensive renovation has been completed, visitor numbers have jumped and they continue to receive glowing feedback about the facilities and location. “The best things about managing RAC Cervantes Holiday Park are the beautiful beachfront location and the relaxed family-oriented atmosphere,” Risinger says. The renovation includes 11 new selfcontained villas, a new swimming pool and a children’s recreation room. For campers, a state-of-the-art camp kitchen has been added along with extra barbecue areas.

The tantalising Great Southern Bremer Bay.
From top-class restaurants, tiny farm gates and cellar doors, to wide open beaches and forest adventures – you’ll need at least a long weekend to discover the many flavours of the Great Southern. by Danielle Costley
This vast region encompasses destinations including Albany, Denmark, Mount Barker, Porongurup and Frankland. It may be more than 400km south of Perth, but as the city skyline fades in the distance and is replaced by verdant pastures, towering forests, endless whitesand beaches and vineyards blanketed in grapevines, you will understand why the Great Southern is worth the journey.
A destination to savour Food is a reflection of a place and its people, and here the produce really does speak for itself. In March, the region comes alive to celebrate the gastronomic delights grown here at the Taste Great Southern festival.
While the foodie festival is a great time to visit the region, its many delights, including outdoor activities, Indigenous and military history, and beautiful beaches, are accessible all year long.
Discovering Denmark There is a slight chill in the air as I arrive at the quintessentially charming township of Denmark and sit on the banks of the winding Denmark River, surrounded by trees carpeted in hues of gold and crimson. I travel along picturesque Scotsdale Road and am ensconced among the towering forest and rich flora and then continue on to beautiful William Bay National Park. If you’re a keen cyclist,

ucking into freshly shucked oysters from the pristine waters of the Southern Ocean while savouring a glass of crisp riesling from a nearby vineyard is all it takes to fall in love with the Great Southern region. Of course, the spectacular coastline and magnificent mountain ranges also help. It doesn’t take long to understand that this special place is a culinary haven. Far away from the hustle and bustle of the city, the soils are rich and farming is plentiful. Inhale the fresh, ocean air and relax into a region that enjoys a slower way of life, where food and wine are its backbone and a sense of community is at its forefront.

Food is a reflection of a place and its people, and here the produce really does speak for itself. ▼
the 1000km off-road cycle track, the Munda Biddi Trail, which runs from the Perth Hills to Albany, passes some stunning coastal locations in this region.
Food and wine delights The Great Southern wine region experiences a true maritime climate with cold, wet winters and mild summers. Combined with its latitude and rich soils from the surrounding forests, this region
is blessed with producing some of Australia’s top rieslings and pinot noirs. At Singlefile Wines I sample some of the region’s award-winning wines at the cellar door, before strolling up the hill for a caffeine hit at Stash. Tucked away among the grapevines, these artisan roasters are dedicated coffee enthusiasts, injecting passion, knowledge and craftsmanship in every single bean.
I’m unsure if it’s the caffeine talking or the happy buzz of the Great Southern, but after spending time in this tranquil slice of heaven, I decide it’s time for a dip in the clear Southern Ocean at one of the most popular coastal attractions in the region – Greens Pool in William Bay National Park. The striking granite boulders that dot the water here create a perfect, protected swimming area. Immersed in a snorkelling paradise floating past colourful fish and brilliant coral formations, I understand why this area is called the Rainbow Coast. Just a short walk from Greens Pool is another interesting natural wonder known as Elephant Rocks – large

granite boulders that resemble a herd of elephants standing in the shallow waters. A walking trail connects the two sites.
Exploring Albany It’s a leisurely 50-kilometre journey east to Albany, where the occasional farm shop can be spied on the side of the road. I arrive at Liberté restaurant, headed up by chef Amy Hamilton who is participating in the Taste Great Southern festival. When Hamilton moved to the Great Southern in 2014 with her young family in tow to pursue her dream of owning a restaurant, she never imagined her food being recognised nationally in the Good Food awards. Now, with her ‘first hat’, she says it’s certainly not a decision she regrets. “I love this region. The slower pace of life and the incredible produce at my fingertips really does make it a wonderful place to raise children,” she enthuses. “I especially enjoy the ability to connect with the producers. There are even a few wine renegades here who are helping build the region’s profile with interesting varieties and styles.” Hamilton finds inspiration for the menu at the weekly farmers market and she enjoys the challenge of working with lesser-known produce. “There is an abundance of seafood here. I cook with all species of seafood and concentrate on finding the best way to make it taste great. Then I draw on my visual arts background to create a dish of both beauty and flavour,” she says. This philosophy is evident in every bite.
Taste Great Southern 2018 highlights This annual foodie festival runs from March 8 to 25, with a range of masterclasses, workshops, markets and events. On 11 March, experience A Sense of Place: a food and wine journey through the Great Southern, or on 16 March in Denmark you can Challenge the Chef at the Signature Pie event. The Albany Wine and Food Show takes place on 17 March.

Where to stay
“Our focus is on sustaining local food traditions, which really is endemic to the Great Southern.”
Organic foraging On the outskirts of Albany lies a precious patch of organic earth that has a special connection with nature. When I arrive at Oranje Tractor winery, a light shower has fallen over the orchard and in its wake, a rainbow begins to shine brightly in the skies. I am greeted by Murray Gomm, who guides me through the edible kitchen garden. With a warm smile, he hands me a basket and encourages me to pick from the range of the beguiling produce.
Flora at Fitzgerald National Park.
Precious rays of sunshine are streaming through the orchard as I pick my ingredients for lunch. There’s macadamias, plums, oranges and apples, still glistening with rain drops. Not surprisingly, my basket is soon full. Afterwards, I sit down to a meal made from my selections and allow the afternoon to slowly pass me by. “We encourage visitors to wander through the farm and experience the taste of organic produce on our food foraging tours,” he explains whilst munching on a freshly picked apple. “Our focus is on sustaining local food traditions, which really is endemic to the Great Southern.” I watch in fascination as he extracts honey from his beehive. Moments later, he passes me a spoon overflowing with this golden nectar. The produce at Gomm’s organic property is like a pocket-sized expression of this magnificent region, a virtual tapestry of colours and flavours, of tranquillity and wonder. And it is beckoning to be explored. ●
The region is blessed with many independent guesthouses, B&Bs and small hotels. The Beach House at Bayside is a boutique hotel that is close to Albany’s Middleton Beach, as is the motel-style Dolphin Lodge. Offering a slice of serenity in the Porongurups, close to the Porongurup Range National Park is both the Sleeping Lady, a self-contained two-bedroom chalet or the romantic Woodlands Retreat, which sleeps just two people. In Denmark, try the luxurious Chimes Spa Retreat, complete with day spa, or one of seven timber and stone cottages at William Bay Country Cottages.
Don’t miss ● Whale watching season
runs from June to October. ● A visit to Albany’s National
Anzac Centre is a powerful reminder of the soldiers’ sacrifice. ● Greens Pool in William Bay National Park, Denmark is a white, sandy beach with interesting rock pools. ● The Granite Skywalk is a suspended walkway high up in the Porongurups and is a moderate hike offering spectacular views of the countryside. Or climb Bluff Knoll, one of Western Australia’s highest peaks.
What to pack Warm clothes for cool autumn nights, hiking boots, sunscreen, bathers, fishing rods and hats.

News and information for travellers
Iconic forest retreat joins the RAC family
RAC members can now enjoy Pemberton’s Karri Valley Resort with a special member discount. The lakeside resort was acquired by RAC late last year and will be extensively refurbished and improved. Additions will include a new caravan and camping site. RAC Executive General Manager Brand and Tourism Tony Pickworth says this acquisition builds on RAC’s goal to provide members with good-quality holiday accommodation in key tourism destinations around Western Australia. “RAC is excited to invest in such an iconic location with the aim of boosting local tourism and encouraging more Western Australians to holiday at home.” He says the plan is to provide a range of consistent, quality accommodation options for members. As part of the new
Take the ‘Rhône’ less travelled For anyone considering a European river cruise, there’s certainly no shortage of options; in fact, the choice can often be overwhelming. The Amsterdam to Budapest itinerary continues to be popular with many Australian travellers, especially those cruising for the first time, though this longer, four-country trip may not suit everyone. An alternative is to consider cruising the Rhône through France. Most Rhône cruise itineraries are seven days, which is ideal for those wanting to cruise without a longer commitment. In summer, you’ll enjoy Mediterranean temperatures, and there is no shortage of scenic, historic or cultural highlights. Visit Arles, Avignon and Vienne to see amphitheatres, temples and bridges, many of which are more than 2000 years old. For wine lovers, Rhône cruises that include the Burgundy and Beaujolais regions are a must. And wherever you go, the cuisine is world-class – experience classic French fare such as bouillabaisse and ratatouille, along with cheeses galore. RAC Travel and Cruise offers a number of Rhône river cruise itineraries, including APT’s eight-day ‘Rhône Treasures’ from Lyon to Arles. For more options and information, call 1300 655 898.
ownership, the name of the park has changed to RAC Karri Valley Resort, and RAC members will receive up to 20 per cent discount on accommodation. Guests can also use RAC’s new ‘lay-by’ system to book their stay and then pay their holiday off in instalments. The resort joins the family of RAC Parks and Resorts in iconic WA locations, including the Ningaloo Reef Resort, RAC Exmouth Cape Holiday Park, RAC Monkey Mia Dolphin Resort, RAC Busselton Holiday Park and RAC Cervantes Holiday Park. To find out more and to book, visit parksandresorts.rac.com.au.
Visit Australia’s ‘land of tulips’ Each spring, the Tasmanian coastal town of Wynyard bursts into life with fields of colourful tulips and the buzz of the annual Bloomin’ Tulips Festival. The festival celebrates the flowering of the tulips at Van Diemen Quality Bulb Farm on Table Cape with three weeks of events, including the Bloomin’ Tulips Cocktail Party, a fireworks spectacular, stalls full of local artisans’ work and plenty of chances to savour the region’s culinary delights. Wynyard, on the picturesque north-west Tasmanian coast, has celebrated tulip season with a festival since 1991.

In 2018, the main event will be held on 13 October, and RAC has created an exclusive tour package for members to attend the festival and to visit other key highlights in Tasmania’s north-west. To find out more, call RAC Travel on 1300 655 179. SYDNEY Wollongong

t first glance, it just seemed to be a pile of snow on the ice. But, as our Russian captain expertly manoeuvres the 6.45-tonne Akademik Ioffe research ship through the cracking sea ice, I finally see a 300kg adult male polar bear rolling around like a gigantic puppy. All 70 passengers are on deck, plus the 23 expedition staff and 41 Russian crew, to marvel at this Lord of the Arctic – the largest land carnivore on earth – as he lies with all four paws stretched towards us. We may be wrapped in microfibre, fleece and waterproof outerwear to stay warm but our polar bear specialist Derek Kyostia explains that polar bears are doing the opposite, sticking their paws in the air to cool off. The clickety-clack of camera shutters mixes with the cries of gulls swirling overhead. We’re on a nine-day Spitsbergen Encounter in the Norwegian Arctic with polar expedition specialist One Ocean

reputation (Lloyds 1A rating). The academic credentials, experience and passion of the expedition team, along with the professional polar knowledge of the Russian crew ensure the cruise is educational and fun. This is not luxury cruising but an authentic expedition adventure, packed with life-enhancing experiences. Cabins range from suites with double beds and ensuite bathrooms to bunk bed triple rooms with shared facilities. The ship also has a small gym, plunge pool, hot tub, sauna and well-stocked library. Conveniently, outerwear jackets, pants and rubber boots, as well as binoculars and dry bags, are provided.
Wildlife encounters Spitsbergen, which was discovered by the Dutch, is the largest island in the Svalbard archipelago – an area that is 60 per cent glaciated. “Our nine-day itinerary is great because you get a microcosm of everything – from Arctic wilderness and wildlife plus explorer history,” says expedition leader Boris Wise. “Two-thirds of the archipelago is protected and the distances between stops is much shorter than in the Canadian Arctic. It’s so far north, there is no indigenous culture. The unknown is guaranteed here and we have a great deal of flexibility about where we go. You get a real sense of adventure on this trip.”

We head off the nautical charts up to 82 degrees north, cruising along the edge of vast plateaus of sea ice with rarely seen vistas of phantasmagorical shapes and intense turquoise hues. We’re rewarded with five blue whales, the largest mammal in the world, which dive around the ship, and dozens of minke whales playing hide and seek among cracks in the pack ice. We enjoy nine polar bear sightings, one of a mother and cub, mum standing tall on her hind legs as she monitors an aggressive male in the distance. Polar bear mums-to-be have the longest fasting period on earth, according to our on-board experts,

entering their dens in October and not emerging until March with a cub.
Adventure excursions Every excursion is carefully planned but nimbly adjusted, depending on wildlife sightings and weather conditions. When the weather is bad, we watch for wildlife from the bridge and listen to entertaining lectures about birds and bears, whales and walruses. When the weather is good, we’re out on the deck, or in Zodiacs zipping across the face of kilometreslong blue glaciers, or out in kayaks, or enjoying guided hikes in the pristine landscape, revelling in the 24 hours of continuous sunshine.
The shore landings are as spectacular as they are diverse. Guides offer a choice of strenuous hikes, naturalist meanders and easy-going strolls so we can get within spitting distance of docile Arctic reindeer and elusive Arctic foxes, and marvel at noisy clouds of kittiwakes and little auks circling their nests tucked into the mountain. Just nine of us chose to sea-kayak, kitted out in dry suits and booties underneath our kayak skirts. Paddling through gaps in small icebergs, we watch tiny, aerodynamic Arctic terns divebombing for fish, and glide underneath rocky ledges where comic-faced puffins line up like diminutive clowns. on the spit, sweet corn and cauliflower cheese. Another day, birdwatching in the sunshine on a tranquil glacier-fringed lagoon, hot chocolate with optional Kahlua twist is delivered by Zodiac. The birdwatching alone is transformative. I had come to the Arctic for the big mammals but came away with a new admiration for the resilience and resourcefulness of its feathered inhabitants. For instance, the thick-billed murre, which creates vast breeding colonies on narrow ledges, produces a single cone-shaped aquamarine egg designed to roll in a tight circle if knocked. Surprisingly, most of these eggs don’t fall off, but at three weeks the chicks literally jump off the cliffs to learn to fish, fly and swim (their wings are designed to ‘fly’ underwater) with dad. As we sit and listen to such stories of survival and endurance during our afterdinner fireside chats, I am grateful that those long months of Arctic darkness have parted just long enough for us fragile humans to savour a ring-side seat in such a sublime wilderness. l
Fast facts Getting there: Fly ‘one-stop’ from Perth to Oslo with Qatar Airways, Emirates and Thai Airways. Scandinavian Airlines flies from Oslo to Longyearbyen, where the cruise starts and ends. For West Australians, the great appeal of the Norwegian Arctic is the ease of getting there, compared with the Canadian Arctic. 2018 departures: One Ocean Expeditions (oneoceanexpeditions. com) is offering two Spitzbergen Encounter departures in June 2018, one a specialist photography symposium at no extra charge. More benefits: Returning guests receive a 10 per cent discount, automatic cabin upgrades, complimentary pre-voyage hotel night and $100 towards their on-board bar tab. connected within a few hours to cities in Asia Pacific, Africa and the Middle East, and will soon know Europe as just one long-haul flight away, with no stops. Qantas will launch its direct flight from Perth to London in March, and it’s being heralded as a game changer. A shiny 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, fresh from Boeing’s Seattle factory, will fly the route, and its long-range capability and light composite material mean there’s no need to stop and refuel in Asia or the Middle East.
At 17 hours, it will become one of the longest commercial flights in the world. It means that, in less than 24 hours, West Aussies could be outside Buckingham Palace, tucking into a curry in London’s Brick Lane or sashaying through Selfridges – feeling less jetlagged and less dehydrated than normal after a long-haul trek from Australia. RAC Travel’s Adam Steward says the 787-9 Dreamliner will make all the difference. ▼

ecades ago, West Australian children would study the globe at home and at school, noting the vast distance from Australia to the UK. For most of those kids (and many of their parents), international travel was an impossibly glamorous and scarce thing, involving visits to the travel agency, the issuing of paper flight tickets and multiple stops across the world. In stark contrast, today’s Generation Alpha growing up in WA is directly

The original Kangaroo Route in 1947 – 7 stops over 4 days
In April 1970, Qantas 707: London–Rome–Tehran–New Delhi– Hong Kong–Manila–Brisbane. All of us kids got a copy of the Tin Tin Flight 714 book! In 1969, when we came to Perth as £10 Poms, our first stop was Frankfurt, followed by Tel Aviv, Tehran, Bombay, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and, finally, Perth. Left London on 8 October and arrived in Perth on 10 October. Still not sure what happened to the 9th.
Deborah Karpierz We flew here on the last flight made by British Eagle Airways in 1966 and it was horrendous. We left from London and I only remember stopping in Kuwait (we were all escorted to the terminal under armed guards and kept there for about eight hours) then a forced landing in Colombo, where we had engine failure as we took off over the jungle, causing an eight-hour delay, then onto Darwin and then Melbourne. Another flight, possibly Ansett, took us on to Adelaide. There may have been other stops along the way but as a seven-year-old at the time I can’t remember any.
OVERNIGHT STOP
The new Perth–London flight – 17 hours direct “The Dreamliner is a great aircraft – it’s more economical, it’s better for the environment and it’s more comfortable,” he says. “The aircraft is designed for less turbulence, its air pressure means that there is less jetlag and there is more cabin space on the aircraft. There are also touch button windows – you can set the darkness to your own preference and the cabin lighting is also designed to reflect the day-night cycle during the 17-hour flight.” ▼

One flight; multiple advantages Steward believes having no stops at another airport will be a bonus for travellers. “Transit is where things can go wrong – luggage can get lost or you could miss a connection. Particularly for people travelling with children or elderly or disabled passengers, flying direct is appealing,” he says.
Early days on the Kangaroo Route Flying directly to London is a far cry from the early days of international flight in Australia. Qantas’ first overseas flight from Perth was in 1943 – the Indian Ocean service to Colombo in Sri Lanka, which was operated with Catalina, Liberator and Lancastrian aircraft. In 1947, Qantas connected Australia and the UK for the first time via the Kangaroo Route, with a L749 Constellation aircraft ‘hopping’ once a week across the globe. The inaugural flight took off in Sydney on 1 December 1947 with 29 passengers and 11 crew. The flight stopped in Darwin, Singapore, Calcutta, Karachi, Cairo and Tripoli en route to London. The flight took four days and passengers stayed overnight in Singapore and Cairo. To get on the original Kangaroo Route to London, West Australians needed to get to Sydney first, adding even more time to the journey.

Perth Airport was once home to much-loved black swans.
The Kangaroo Route changed over the years to include stops in other cities in the Middle East, Europe, India and Sri Lanka, and the number of weekly flights increased steadily, too. The Indian Ocean service from Perth was also eventually extended to Karachi, allowing WA passengers to connect from there to fly onwards to London.
Perth’s international reach Perth and its airport have grown phenomenally over the decades. The airport’s international non-stop flight network today includes 17 international cities in Asia Pacific, Africa and the Middle East. “The most popular routes include Singapore, Denpasar, Kuala Lumpur, Dubai and Hong Kong,” says Debra Blaskett, Chief Corporate Services Officer, Perth Airport.
Find a deal At the time of writing, return economy-class fares on the new Qantas London flight were available for between $1350 and $2300 for travel in May. RAC Travel’s Adam Steward says that with some planning and flexibility, you could secure a deal to Europe. “It’s always advisable to travel outside the peak periods (June, July and August), sign up for our newsletter to keep up with offers and be flexible. Shifting your travel dates by just a few days could save you hundreds of dollars. If you call us we can see where the best deals are.”
The new Qantas Dreamliner will operate direct to London.
Qantas
Perth Airport
Travel
The airport has seen an increase in flights and routes to and from Perth over the past year. “Perth Airport has welcomed a seasonal B787 Dreamliner service to Christchurch, an additional flight to Mauritius, two flights a day on new airline Batik Air to Bali, an additional flight to Guangzhou and a new A350 aircraft daily to Hong Kong.” Blaskett says that in addition to the new London flight, more capacity to China and a new direct flight to Japan are on the horizon.
How much faster could we fly? While a single 17-hour flight to Britain is a huge leap from the four-day journey on the original Kangaroo Route, flight times could be slashed even further in the future. Aircraft manufacturers Boeing and Airbus continue to develop long-range aircraft, while other organisations and individuals also have a vision for the next air travel revolution. The last Concorde flight may have taken off in 2003, but NASA is among the organisations planning new research into supersonic aircraft. Meanwhile, billionaire Elon Musk has stated his interest in transforming air travel, too. As founder of space company SpaceX, Musk has spoken about plans for a rocket-like aircraft which he claims could reduce travel times from Honolulu to Tokyo to about 30 minutes. So, could Perth one day be connected to Jakarta via a high-speed flying train? Or could a supersonic flight from WA to Johannesburg be possible in under an
Features include windows that can be dimmed.
“The Dreamliner is designed for less turbulence, its air pressure means that there is less jetlag and there is more cabin space on the aircraft.” hour? Right now, it seems an unlikely prospect – but then the thought of jumping on just one 17-hour flight from Perth to London would have been just as unlikely to those first passengers hopping their way across the globe on the original Kangaroo Route. l February / March 2018 Horizons 49

Mustang dodges Bullitt Continuing our series of famous movie anniversaries, this year marks 50 years since the premiere of one of actor and racing driver Steve McQueen’s most renowned films, Bullitt. The thriller follows the work of McQueen’s character, San Francisco police Lieutenant Frank Bullitt. It’s widely known for the now-iconic car chase involving Bullitt’s Ford Mustang GT 390 and the baddies’ Dodge Charger R/T 440. A Mustang believed to be the stunt car used in the movie was discovered in Mexico last year and is being restored.
Sorento upgraded Kia has launched a heavily revised new version of its popular Sorento seven-seater SUV for 2018, with the most important additions being autonomous emergency braking now standard equipment across the range and a new, in-house designed and built eight-speed transmission. Apple Carplay and Android phone integration capability, plus a new Harman/Kardon sound system, are also available. Prices are also up slightly across the range, but only slightly and for that you get a fair amount more gear.
Gaming gets real Battery factory plugs in BMW, along with its Chinese joint venture partner Brilliance China Automotive Holdings, has opened a new battery factory in Shenyang, a large industrial centre in China’s north-east. The factory will supply batteries to a nearby plant that produces the BMW 5 Series Plug-in Hybrid. BMW said this is the first battery factory of any premium automotive manufacturer in China, and it expects that by 2025, electrified BMW and Mini models will account for between 15 and 25 per cent of global sales.

Alex Forrest reviews the latest cars on our roads.
Test drive Toyota Mirai
Even though hydrogen is extremely flammable, hydrogen fuel-cell cars don’t burn hydrogen in an engine, and, of course, they don’t burn petrol or diesel either. These vehicles also don’t need to be recharged with electricity from an external source and yet this one is powered by an electric motor. So how does that work? Toyota’s hydrogen fuel-cell car, the Mirai, stores hydrogen under very high pressure (70 megapascals or more than 10,000psi) in two tanks. That hydrogen is fed into a fuel-cell stack, which is a device that can combine the hydrogen with oxygen from the ambient air to form a chemical reaction that produces electricity.
That electricity is then used to drive an electric motor, which, in turn, powers the vehicle. However, to optimise its energy conservation, the Mirai utilises the same hybrid system developed for the Toyota Prius, with the exception being the regular hybrid’s petrol engine is replaced by the fuel-cell stack. That means the Mirai also uses a battery, which can also store electricity generated by the fuel cell and the regenerative braking system and use it later to power the vehicle. The drive system generates up to 110kW, and with both hydrogen tanks filled, a range of 550km is claimed. The tanks take about five minutes to fill and would cost about $60.

There’s an accelerator and a brake in the usual places and you drive it just like a regular automatic vehicle. The Mirai’s interior is well finished, with some futuristic elements. The polished surfaces and soft-touch materials are what you might also expect in a premium small car. It has been sold in Japan, the US and Europe since 2015, but has never been sold in Australia.
The one we drove was carried to WA by a large truck dedicated to the job of refuelling hydrogen cars, which Toyota calls its ‘mobile refueller’. Toyota has said it will continue to work with governments, industry and other stakeholders in Australia to fast track the development of the refuelling infrastructure required to support the widespread sale of fuel-cell vehicles. l

Audi TTRS Remember the first Audi TT? With styling that made you want to hug it, the 1998 TT was distinctive, and today that first TT remains an automotive design icon. However, it wasn’t until 2005, when Audi rammed a 184kW, 3.2-litre V6 into the TT, that it became a truly capable sports car, and one that could give rivals such as the BMW Z4 3.0 something to worry about. Today, the Audi TT is not defined by looks alone. It’s a responsive sports coupé with razor-sharp handling and a breathtaking interior. That’s just the base model, which has a four-cylinder, 169kW turbo engine. But in this part of the market, luxury sports coupés need to do better than that. This
is where the Audi TTRS comes in, complete with Audi’s five-cylinder, 294kW turbo engine. Five-cylinder engines are unusual, but Audi has been making them for a long time and is very good at it indeed. In fact, in the early 1980s, Audi put one of these fivecylinder jobs and a quattro all-wheel drive system into a small family saloon. It dominated the World Rallying Championship so thoroughly, the competition had to get all-wheel drive too, just to get a whiff of Audi’s dust. The TTRS isn’t cheap. It costs $152,000 drive away, the ride is very firm, there’s no legroom in the back, it needs premium fuel, ANCAP rates it only 4 stars

and the warranty is for only three years. But think of it this way. For those occasions where you can safely enjoy it, the TTRS has the kind of performance that approaches that of a supercar. Take it to a racetrack, and you’ll find it can reach 100km/h in 3.7 seconds, which is only 0.3 seconds behind a Lamborghini Huracan. Yet,
the TTRS is also more than $240,000 cheaper than that Lambo. Not many TTRS buyers will feel the need to justify its purchase, but if you do, just mention the Lambo comparison. You can add that the TTRS is also more fuel efficient, cheaper to service and nicer to sit in. You’re welcome. l February / March 2018 Horizons 53

Nissan X-Trail Aggressive pricing and competitive equipment levels have helped keep the Nissan X-Trail among the five top-selling medium-sized SUVs in Australia. Features like the option of seven seats in a vehicle this size have been among its differentiating factors, as has its affordable starting price. In May 2017, it had some styling tweaks to the front and rear, new alloy wheel designs and some changes to the interior cosmetics. The X-Trail also got a new 2.0-litre diesel engine boasting 130kW and 380Nm – a significant upgrade from the previous diesel’s 96kW and 320Nm. The 2.0-litre and 2.5-litre petrol engines (106kW and 126kW respectively) are carried over from the previous model.
But the X-Trail’s main appeal in recent times has been the neat combination of its sevenseater option and mid-sized SUV dimensions. It means buyers don’t have to spend more on a larger SUV and the extra fuel consumption that usually entails, but can still have the option of carrying extra passengers. The seven-chair X-Trail starts at $36,050 drive away, which places it between the entry level Mitsubishi Outlander seven seater at $29,990 and the entry level Honda CR-V seven seater at $43,415. Of these, the Outlander is the only one available with seven seats and all-wheel drive. However, the Outlander is also built down to a price,

particularly in the entry-level models, and you’ll notice it. The most important safety upgrade to arrive with this new X-Trail was the addition of autonomous emergency braking to all variants in the range, a move which brings it into line with the safety leaders among medium SUVs. Autonomous emergency braking is a sensing technology that uses radar and/or cameras to detect obstacles ahead of the vehicle and then
automatically apply the brakes if the driver does not. Higher spec variants get pedestrian detection added to the auto braking system, along with other driver assist tech, including rear cross traffic alert and intelligent cruise control. To many who have no plans to go off-road and like the idea of slightly lower fuel consumption and great interior flexibility and build quality, the seven-seat equipped, front-wheel drive X-Trail will be a winner. l

Subaru XV Subaru’s baby SUV has a special point of difference from its competitors in this super-heated part of the new car marketplace: symmetrical all-wheel drive. Both the front and rear wheels have drive going to them all the time whenever it is being driven, which is in contrast to on-demand systems that have sensors picking up when the wheels are losing traction and then engaging them reactively. There is another distinguishing factor with the XV – it has the highest ride height in its class, and this combined with its all-wheel drive system gives it excellent off-road ability. The XV was first launched in 2012, and this is the model’s
first major upgrade since then. In fact, Subaru has said 95 per cent of the car is new, though to the casual observer it looks quite similar to the old one. The 2.0-litre, flat-four cylinder engine has been tweaked to extract an extra 5kW, taking the total to 115kW. Torque output remains the same at 196Nm, though it now comes in at 4000rpm, which is 600rpm earlier than the old model, making it a bit more accessible. These changes have been partly due to the adoption of direct fuel injection in the XV, which is not the only change under the bonnet. Subaru says around 80 per cent of the engine components have been revised for
Subaru XV specifications Price Engine Power Torque Claimed fuel economy ANCAP safety rating

improved efficiency and lighter weight. The latter has resulted in a 12kg weight saving. However, there are some stronger performers among the XV’s competition. This includes the 1.6-turbo petrol available in the Hyundai Kona and the torquey 2.3-litre diesel in the Mitsubishi ASX. The CVT transmission can accentuate the XV’s hardworking flat four when you’re asking for most of what it’s got, though in light, around-town
driving it’s not as obvious. Still, the XV has better off-road credentials than both these vehicles. The improvement in the build quality of the interior is marked, and considerably more upmarket and cohesive in its design than the superseded model. Plus, Subaru’s change to annual servicing for the XV is a significant improvement over its previous six-monthly requirement, both in terms of convenience and cost. l February / March 2018 Horizons 55

Q
Every time I have my vehicle serviced I am asked if I wish to have an ‘engine flush’. This is claimed to be beneficial as it removes engine deposits that are said to build up between oil changes (performed annually with around 10,000 to 12,000km travelled). I refuse this $40-plus expense on the basis that I cannot see the benefit, because modern oils should provide sufficient engine protection. Am I saving my money or is the extra cost worthwhile? Richard Plumridge, Hillarys
A: If you are in doubt,
we would advise you to always follow manufacturer log book servicing requirements. If an engine flush is not specified here, then provided your vehicle has been serviced regularly, generally speaking an engine oil flush would not be required.

Q
I have a Mazda2 Neo and about six months ago I started to notice a rattling noise under the driver’s seat. I heard this noise only at my first drive of the day. It sounded like metal turning when I pressed the accelerator pedal and it would last for about 15 minutes. This noise was more noticeable after a long winter night. I do not hear the noise again on subsequent drives during the day. Is there anything concerning about this? Rose Wong
A:
It’s very hard to identify what causes these problems without looking at the vehicle. The rattling noise could be a number of things, like a heat shield on the exhaust, a loose exhaust bracket or ventilation fan. As an RAC Member you are entitled to one Free Fault Diagnosis per membership each year. If you would like to determine the cause of these problems, don’t hesitate to contact RAC Auto Services on 13 17 03.
Q
How frequently do I need to check the air pressures of all four of my tyres ? I have been told by friends that once every month should be good enough. Do I go by the manufacturer manual for the recommended tyre pressure regardless of wet or dry seasons? I have been told that I need to increase the pressure by 2 psi above the manufacturer recommendation for all four tyres. Linda Teo, Woodlands
A:
RAC Tyres advise that tyre pressures should be checked at least once a month, and it is best to check when cold. Tyre pressures should be set to manufacturer specification, which can be found on the tyre placard. This is usually located in the driver’s door jamb, under the bonnet or in the glove box.

Six simple camping hacks Every camper has their favourite camping hacks. Those little tricks that make life more comfortable in the great outdoors. Here’s six easy hacks you might be able to use next time you set up camp.
1
Buy foam tiles – the kind that link together like a jigsaw – for the floor of your tent to add a little extra cushioning and comfort.
2
Use a shoe organiser to store items you need regularly, like torches, insect repellent and tea towels and then hook it up somewhere easily accessible at your camp site.
Our members During the early 1900s, as the first cars began appearing on Western Australian roads, a small group of intrepid automobiles owners got together in a home in Peppermint Grove and resolved to start an automobile club. That club, which became the RAC, began in 1905 with 32 enthusiastic members. Now we have more than one million. That means one in every two households in WA are home to an RAC member. Our members are everything. You are the reason we exist and, with no shareholders, the reason we are able to give back to you and the whole WA community for the better of all West Australians.

How to avoid real ‘cat burglars’ Pet owners are often concerned about having a home alarm installed in case they’re not able to leave their dog or cat inside while they’re out and the system is armed. The good news is there are alarm sensors that are ‘pet immune’. Pet immune motion sensors are designed to tell the difference between humans and animals, making pet triggered alarms less common. How this works depends on the type of sensor installed. Pet Immune Passive Infrared Motion sensors are less sensitive to movement lower to the ground so your dog or cat can literally go under the radar. They need to be positioned accurately to work best.
Car detailing tricks you can use at home If your car had a good workout during the holiday season, there are some simple car detailing tricks you can use to get it shining again. Car Detailer Bernie Matthews from RAC Auto Services says the best time to detail your car is straight after a big road trip and he has some useful tips to get a professionally detailed look:
How pet-immune alarm sensors work 2.00 1.75 1.50 1.25 1.00 0.75 0.50 0.25 Metres
l Before applying a wax or polish, make sure all dirt particles have been thoroughly washed off or you may inadvertently create swirl marks on the paint’s surface; the swirls are actually very fine scratches. l After applying your wax or polish, to get the shiniest finish, use a microfiber towel to remove the polish and buff it up. It makes the buffing job easier and helps prevent swirl marks. Allow the wax or polish to dry thoroughly before taking it off. l Use a soft broom to clean the wheels. This is important, as car wheels can have brake pad residue, which can scratch the paint on the rest of the car. l Always work from the top of the car to the bottom, as the bottom is usually the dirtiest. Keeping your car’s interior and exterior in good condition is important for resale value so it pays to clean it regularly. To keep the rest of your car in great condition, make sure it’s serviced at the recommended intervals. When small maintenance jobs are missed it can lead to bigger problems. Members get 10 per cent off labour costs for services at RAC Auto Service centres.
Pet Immune Dual Technology Motion sensors are more complex and use two different detection sensors. This unit is more tolerant of alarms being triggered due to animals, even larger animals or small animals in a group, as both sensors need to be activated for the alarm to trigger. To find out more about how your pet and home alarm can coexist, call RAC Security for a free in-home consultation or visit rac.com.au/security.
To find out more, visit rac.com.au/autoservices.
Correction: The Roundabouts Refresher article in December/ January Horizons stated that drivers must give way to vehicles on their right including those already on the roundabout. The exact requirement is that: “A driver entering a roundabout shall give way to a vehicle that is within the roundabout."

CAN YOU HEAR BUT
NOT
UNDERSTAND?
Virtually Undetectable
“If you are serious about improving your hearing then wait no longer” (This New Technology comes in all styles & sizes to match most types of hearing loss) Improves Your Hearing Without Anyone Knowing It’s There Introducing a brand-new hearing aid technology that was designed in Europe and custom made here in Australia for your exact ear size and shape. It’s so small it can fit deep inside your ear canal, it begins where other hearing aids end. This makes it virtually invisible to anyone else.
Latest Technology Despite its miniature size, the computer inside the “CompletelyIn-Canal” hearing aid is so powerful it supports the most sophisticated advances in digital hearing technology to date. The microprocessor is so fast, that it samples the listening environment
30‑DAY EXCHANGE GUARANTEE
20,000 times per second and makes automatic adjustments to the sounds it delivers to your ear.
No Whistling, Buzzing, Or Plugged-Up Feeling It also supports the undisputed world-leading feedback cancellation technology. This means that the annoying whistling and buzzing your grandfathers old hearing aids used to make is a thing of the past. In addition, the positioning of this hearing aid deep in the ear canal is designed to work with the ear’s natural acoustics to deliver more precise and natural sound and resolve that pluggedup or head-in-a-barrel sensation (a complaint of many hearing aid wearers).
FREE LIFETIME Hearing Aid Adjustments, Consultations & In-House Servicing
If you are not completely satisfied with your new hearing aids
Are You Missing Too Much? Don’t let your hearing loss deprive you of the things you enjoy most in life: the relationships with your friends, family and work colleagues. You can get help now without suffering the stigma of yesterday’s large unsightly hearing aids.
Hearing Loss Specialists Hearing Clinics Are offering complimentary hearing consultations to RAC members to determine whether you are a candidate to wear the Completely-In-Canal hearing aids. We invite you to call today for an appointment. Your visit will include a hearing test (with an otoscopic examination), a personalised consultation to determine the correct level of technology that is required for your individual hearing loss.

Clarification: In December/January 2018 Horizons (“Future energy”, pg 33) we reported that flow batteries had a shorter life-span that lithium-ion batteries. Australia’s Redflow ZCell flow batteries are in fact longer lasting than comparable lithium-based batteries.

Rowley Shoals Marine Park, Kimberley coast
Ningaloo Reef.
The Rowley Shoals west of Broome offer spectacular diving. This chain of three coral atolls sits at the edge of the continental shelf, the shallow lagoons teeming with colourful coral and fish. Get there by taking a charter boat from Broome.
Coral reefs Ningaloo Marine Park, Ningaloo coast
Pocillopora Reef, Rottnest Island
Houtman Abrolhos Islands, Geraldton coast
The largest reef in the world so close to the mainland, Ningaloo Reef is a beautiful place to experience our underwater world. The World Heritage-listed site is home to marine life such as whales, dolphins and dugongs and is the largest fringing coral reef in Australia. At certain times of the year you can see mass coral spawning along the reef.
At Rottnest’s Parker Point, the warmer waters brought by the Leeuwin Current allow the stunning pink coral found on this reef to flourish. It’s the ideal snorkelling spot for beginners, with relatively calm and shallow water. This is the southernmost place in WA to find tropical coral, which typically thrives in warmer waters, so you’re not missing out if you can’t head north.
Stretching 100km along the coast of Geraldton and made up of 122 islands, the waters of the Houtman Abrolhos are unique as they support both tropical and temperate marine life. This is due to the warmer waters brought by the Leeuwin Current. There are extensive reefs surrounding the islands that are accessible to snorkellers and divers.
Montebello Islands Marine Park, Pilbara coast
Muiron Islands Marine Management Area, Ningaloo coast
Dampier Archipelago Marine Park, Pilbara coast
This marine park 120km west of Dampier is made up of more than 250 islands and islets, with colourful coral reefs, lagoons and channels. The area is rich in marine plants and animals, including mangroves, about 150 species of hard coral and more than 450 species of fish. Dugongs can also be found feeding in the seagrass.
This island group off the coast of Exmouth is an underwater wonderland for divers. Fish and coral are abundant and it also contains many interesting underwater rock ledges and swim-throughs. Both divers and snorkellers can experience the underwater highlights, with a shallower dive spot in the south Muiron island area.
Within a 45km radius of Dampier, you can find an archipelago of 42 islands with waters that contain more than 650 fish species, as well as coral reefs, sponge gardens and seagrass. These pristine islands offer world-class diving and spectacular snorkelling – you might even spot a dugong or bottlenose dolphin.
Biggada Reef west of Barrow Island has a diverse range of important coral species. The marine park is also a vital breeding and nesting area for marine turtles. There is no public access on Barrow Island, but you can visit the waters by private boat.
Montgomery Reef, Kimberley coast If you’re in the Kimberley, don’t miss the chance to watch Montgomery Reef emerge at low tide. This natural wonder rises from the ocean by up to five metres. The reef covers about 300sq/km and lies within Camden Sound Marine Park, where you can also see turtles, dolphins and dugongs.
Scott Reef, Kimberley coast This remote reef at the edge of the continental shelf supports an incredible array of marine life. With remarkable underwater visibility, it has been a hotspot for divers; however, the reef has been affected by coral bleaching. Scott Reef is about 300km north-west of Broome.
Preserving our marine world Coral bleaching is affecting many coral reefs around the world and WA’s coral reefs are not immune. To learn more about coral bleaching and how you can help, visit coralwatch.org.
