Mapping Ljubljana

“ M A P P I N G L J U B L J A N A” »The city is revealed in various ways. By the silhouette of the towers on the far horizon, by dimension of city boulevards or by the vibrancy of urban center. We can experience it as a collage of beautiful facades and welldesigned squares or as a rich social environment, where urbanity allows a diverse personal interactions. The city is also the space of a collective memory of community. Careful reading offers us the possibility of deeper understanding of the conditions and reasons for its occurrence. Through layers of archaeological remains and through footsteps of historical and contemporary architecture, it reveals us its history. When you are open and immersed deep enough you can listen to the story it is telling us. Only then one can feel the city as a whole, understand the logic of its beginning, and align with all its memories without which today it would not be such as it is... And the more we know it, closer it is to us and more we like it...« P R O F. M A R U Š A Z O R E C PROMPT: How do you perceive the urban tissue of Ljubljana? Which urban, architectural or natural elements, structures and subjects you identify as essential for it? In which scales identified subjects occur? How they shape the emptiness that we call urban space? How they affect our perception of the city scape and place? Present your mapping of Ljubljana with graphical techniques and by abstract models. 5/2 - 16/2/2018 JULIANNA ŁOBODA KAIDI PÕDER R O B I N V I NAY EZGI SIN RACHAEL HUDSON ARIF BURAK TILBE

In my I work I focused on pedestrians walks and shared spaces. Nowaday, city should be design for pedestrians. Cars have their place also, for that we create shared spaces. Ljubjlana and his mobility plan promote bike, city buses, Park and ride system... that's make this city pleasant for pedestrians.

For this project Jože Plečnik’s landscape intervention examined in terms of articulation of trees. You can easily observe the role of trees in giving character to Ljublana. Five different location chosen to explain role of trees in landscape and urban design.

The columns in Ljubljana’s city center, specifically Plečnik’s interventions throughout the center are quite noticeable as a unique urban element that one does not find in other cities. I see these columns, designed by Plečnik, as special because they serve a separate purpose to the urban fabric than most monuments. They can be a symbol, path or gateway, that in turn connect the main axis’ of Ljubljana. Columns are usually structure for a building or roof of support, but I see these columns as support Ljubljana’s public space. They are the stitching of the urban fabric, connecting the neighborhoods. 1. Plecnikova Trnznica - Market area - The columns lining the front between the permanent structure and the temporary market stalls, act as a guide along the river creating a path leading you to the heart of Ljubljana. 2. Tromostovje - Triple bridge - Ljubljana's main square features three bridges connecting both sides of the river. The columns define the different spaces with their height without overwhelming passersby. The bridge and the square is the center of the convergence for the main axis', which functions as both a symbol and gateway. 3. Suštarski most - Cobbler's bridge - The columns were originally supposed to hold a roof. Without the roof, they create an unique bridge where the space is defined vertically, connecting the riversides and acting as a stopping point with views or a gateway to the other side. 4. Vegova Ulica - Path from Congress Square to French Revolution Square - The interventions made here were to add culture and knowledge. Columns support the busts of famous musicians along the street, that create a path to the end as well as relate to you because they are in human scale. At the end of the street, is a monument to the French Revolution. This square column is tall and significant creating a symbol. 5. Trnovo Bridge - bridge as square for church - The original square for the church was quite small and didn't meet the needs of the church-goers. Plečnik designed this bridge to be extra wide to extend the square over the river and give a more comfortable gateway to the church. He used pyramid columns to line the edge of the bridge that were influence by the church's architecture.
