Architecture will always be a prominent passion in my life. The design challenge to interact spaces with each other and with the surrounding context, while incorporating the materials is the greatest adventure. It is a puzzle without definite pieces that must fit together. There must be a solution to every design challenge and usually a solution leads to more questions. Beyond the design process, architecture plays a role in everyone’s life. To be able to be involved in something that is so connected to the mass population is a really powerful feeling. There is a great responsibility that lies with architects because the buildings they build affect everything, through the cities they are built in and the people they are built for. I will be an architect that positively affects and adds beauty to the world.

VIEW FROM EAST CORNER

During a five week workshop, I designed a cultural center. Helsinki, Finland, lying on the 60° latitude line experiences very dark winters, with only 6 hours of sun on the winter solstice. Through the footprint of the building, the best of the winter sun is welcomed from the south to southwest on the public terrace into the core of the building. Travelers are connected to the city center through the diagonal passage. The program supports traveling art exhibitions, various lessons and conferences, and an expansive library to showcase and teach their culture, past present and future ideals. The shape of the building suggests inspiration of the Finnish Baltic architectural history with a look to the future in the modifying of traditions, in hopes to remember the past but still look forward.

The train and bus station in Tallinn, Estonia, has undergone a few renovations and now features many uncomfortable situations for using the train or bus. They are quite disconnected from what one would do when arriving in Tallinn. In a five week workshop, I worked to urbanize this area to create a smooth flowing transportation hub. By putting the bus station underground and controlling the flow of traffic, the pedestrians and travelers would be able to use this area more efficiently. Key elements to achieve this are the tram stop being closer and under the same roof as the trains, new buildings support the demand for more mix-used areas, and a public square that connects all access to, from and through Balti Jaam.

INNSBRUCK, AUSTRIA

VIEW FROM SEEGRĂœBE UP

In the next 100 plus years, Austria will be densified throughout all the flat lands, until there isn’t even land to farm. Mountains cover 62% of land in Austria, therefore the only place left to expand is up. The Nordkette will be the new home for a scientific utopia, where they will be self-sufficient and be the home of the future answers. Scientists, botanists, researchers and students will come to discover the future ways of agriculture, especially in harsh climates such as the Nordkette. From harmoniously harvesting energy and food together, to every resident also having their own greenhouse, they will be able to sustain themselves without needing the valley below. VIEW FROM EAST

Hotel Bellevue sits at the end of Ribcev Laz, atop this hill overlooking Bohinj Lake to the north. It has a beautiful stone base and wooden structure above. Also on this site are some apartments that don’t add quality to the hotel or site. The hotel itself is a monument and a expression of Bohinj. When approaching from southern road, one only sees a hint of the building through the trees. Approaching from the west you have a sense of its grandness, but also that your journey isn’t finished until you face the direction the building points. The view from the top of Bellevue is one to never forget. You see the lake at the bottom of the valley and also Triglav in the distance. EAST-WEST SECTION

Marvila is located in the East side of Lisbon, Portugal and is home to a new community center so the residents can participate in the greater community. The project includes a large space for gathering and smaller auxillary spaces as well as comfortable outdoor public space, both shaded and in the sun. The old Quinta is now a beautiful garden full of roses and other flowers, so the ruins can remain and remind us of the history of the region but not be desolate. The design is subtle on the land to let the Quinta have heirarchy, and also blend into the existing topography. The building has a unique ramp and circulation system around the outer edge of the building that then lets you into the main spaces at the appropriate heights. The windows are tall and thin to filter the light and offer softer lit indoor spaces.

Markets have been around for thousands of years meeting the needs of people. The most successful markets have lasted hundreds of years. The objective was to design a system through architecture that could meet the various needs through the generations in the same structure. The future market will be successful when it provides an engaging experience to its users. The roof was inspired by the traditional market typology. The circulation through the market is a journey that allows customers to be in each space and have views to the other spaces. It brings the customers through all the food Portland has to offer to the top beer garden that provides a wonderful view of the Willamette River and showcases Portland’s finest beer. OregonBILDS, an organization designed by Rob Thallon, creates classes that allow students to get real life experience in executing a design. As a class of 14, we were to design an affordable house, within an actual budget, while being creative and efficient. The house is 1280 sq ft with three bedrooms, 2 full baths, a multi-functional great room and a spacious backyard. We incorporated energy efficiency with a heat pump, full insulation, and great southern exposure windows. We submitted the drawings for permitting, on Dec. 3, 2013, construction began the following January and completed by June.

FINISHED TILE MOSAIC

The client requested to have a grand entrance to his home, which as a team we planned infinity pool fountains, the tile mosaic layout, and the front yard landscaping. I designed and coordinated the construction of the tile mosaic, which included specifying, sourcing, and drawing construction documents. Inspired by eclectic themes from the interior, a greek key borders the faceted oval encompassing the horse, which correlates to the logo of Mesa Manor. To continue this language inside the home, the upstairs corridors are bordered with a smaller scale greek key of the same materials.

The Fold and Roll will fit in wonderfully in any small space. This desk is functional and practical for anyone with limited space and minimal desk needs. The main surface folds up whenever needed and supported with collapsible gate legs. It can be stowed easily by rolling it away. The side storage, a slim box with a shelf, is minimal to not distract the user with too many items to choose from. A laptop and a few notebooks fit nicely on the lower shelf, while a mouse and some writing utensils fit on the upper one.
