From Barriers to Breakthroughs

Make every moment count at The Breakers Palm Beach

WELCOME From the Founders

Dear Friends,

We are forever thankful for your generous support and dedication to Els for Autism®. We are honored to host and celebrate with you over the next few days.

Over the past year, Els for Autism has empowered countless autistic individuals to break through barriers both on our campus and worldwide. In fact, our team has now directly impacted individuals, families, and professionals in 37 countries. These breakthroughs would not have been possible without your unwavering commitment to us.

Many of you attended last year’s Grand Finale, where we proudly welcomed you inside the new Stoops Family Adult Services Building, giving you a firsthand look at what your dedication helped us build for adults who have transitioned out of the school system. One of those thriving adults is none other than Ben Els!

Ben is now part of our Adult Day Training (ADT) program and continues to break barriers every day, thanks to the programs and services he receives inside the Stoops Family Adult Services Building. “From recognizing an unspoken need in one of his peers and wanting to take on the role of caregiver, to becoming more engaged within the community through ADT outings, our team has witnessed firsthand the growth in Ben’s confidence, self-assurance, and sense of belonging,” said Robin Jones, EdD, Associate Director of Adult Services.

With the opening of the adult services building, we have increased the enrollment of our ADT program and will continue accepting clients until we reach capacity. We have also supported numerous individuals in achieving breakthroughs inside our vocational training labs, including the Big Easy™ Cafe by Ernie Els.

Our Early Intervention team is now supporting more young children than ever as they embark on their breakthrough journeys during pivotal years. We are proud to be one of a select group of global organizations using the FDA-authorized EarliPoint™ autism evaluation tool. This innovative tool helps identify children at risk for autism, and if a diagnosis is confirmed, our team provides on-site individualized intervention services.

Our recreation offerings have also expanded, and we now have a dedicated online portal for the Ernie Els #GameON Autism® Sports programs. This portal makes it easier for our Official Program Providers (OPP) around the globe to access our materials and support the successful implementation of the program in their communities.

As we celebrate our collective accomplishments, our eyes remain on the horizon. This time last year, we introduced our next project: a capital campaign to build a specialized, autismfriendly recreation complex. Thanks to Stanley Black & Decker’s $5 million pledge to name our gymnasium, the support of Florida legislators who awarded us two $1 million state appropriations, and many additional donors, we are excited to share that by this time next year, construction on the complex will be in full swing!

Thank you for lighting our path on the road to becoming the global leader in autism. We have done a lot of celebrating with our clients this past year as barriers were broken and breakthroughs were achieved. Now we get to celebrate all of you, who were influential in making these achievements possible.

Cheers to you!

WELCOME From the Board Chair

Dear Friends!

I am grateful for the opportunity to thank all who participated in our annual Golf Challenge regional event series this year, many who have been with us since its inception in 2011. Your dedication to supporting the vision of Els for Autism allows us to empower more autistic individuals to create lives full of limitless possibilities—our theme from last year’s Grand Finale, which still holds true today.

The Els for Autism team continues to expand its global reach, having now directly impacted autistic individuals, families, and professionals in 37 countries. With every barrier an individual breaks through, we further cement our status as a world leader in the development and dissemination of innovative transdisciplinary programming for individuals with autism.

As the Board Chair of Els for Autism, I am proud of all our team has achieved since last year’s Grand Finale. I am also very honored to announce three individuals now serving alongside me on the Board of Directors who are no strangers to the Golf Challenge: Donald Allan Jr., DJ Paoni, and Gary Gauba. All three are global leaders in business and philanthropy, with a longstanding history of supporting Els for Autism.

Donald Allan Jr., the President and CEO of Stanley Black & Decker, brings a strong background in finance and executive management to the Board. Don’s commitment to corporate social responsibility is evident through Stanley Black & Decker’s pledge of $5 million to support the construction of our specialized, autism-friendly recreation complex, the funding to outfit our Stanley Black & Decker vocational workshop lab, and their ongoing commitment as a National Sponsor of our Golf Challenge. Additionally, Don is the Co-Chair of our Hartford, Connecticut Golf Challenge event at Wethersfield Country Club.

DJ Paoni, the CEO of Certinia, is a seasoned executive in the technology and enterprise software sectors. As a loyal supporter of the autism community, DJ has specifically focused on helping autistic adults secure employment during his time as the President of SAP North America. He has dedicated countless hours to Els for Autism as one of our longtime National Co-Chairs. DJ is also the Regional Co-Chair of both our Chicago, Illinois and Scottsdale, Arizona Golf Challenge events.

Gary Gauba, the Founder and Managing Director of The CXO Fund, Founder and Chairman of TruU (Next Generation Cyber Security Identity Platform), as well as Founder and Chairman of Terra Near Net Zero Green Data Centre, has a track record of leading high-growth technology companies and driving innovation. Gary has played an active role in the Golf Challenge since 2011 and is the Co-Chair of our San Francisco, California Golf Challenge event.

The collective expertise, dedication, and prominence of these three leaders in business and philanthropy will undoubtedly bring new energy and insights to our global mission as we embark on another ambitious phase of growth at Els for Autism.

Please enjoy some barriers to breakthroughs stories that you have personally supported in the following pages, and know that for one written here, there are hundreds more breakthroughs our team has supported since our last finale—reminding us that with each barrier broken, we are one step closer to a world full of limitless possibilities for all impacted by autism.

With Gratitude,

MarleneSotelo&Dr

ELS CUP WINNER

Tanner’s Team

$84,900

Team: Gregory & Charles Poor

Regional Event: Bear Lakes Country Club

Honorary Captain: Tanner Poor

It all started in 2013 when Greg and Corinne Poor were invited to the Els’ home after their youngest son, Tanner, was diagnosed with autism. The Poors left the Els’ home feeling different than when they arrived—knowing they were no longer alone in their journey with Tanner. As they were leaving, Liezl mentioned the Golf Challenge. Greg immediately responded, “Yes, I’ll sign up!” Not only did Greg sign up, he went on to form Tanner’s Team, which has now raised over $630,000 to support Els for Autism.

In 2020, the Poor family relocated from Massachusetts to South Florida so Tanner could receive the programs and services offered by the Els for Autism team and attend The Learning Academy Charter School, located on The Els Center of Excellence campus. “Tanner has accomplished many breakthroughs since our move; however, one of the biggest areas of growth this year is his ability to identify his emotions more clearly,” said Greg and Corinne. “This not only shows his self-awareness but also his comfort in communicating his needs during challenging moments. This is huge for a child who is mostly non-speaking and represents breakthroughs we have been hoping for and that Tanner has been working toward since he was a toddler.”

The Poor family is grateful for how the Golf Challenge has provided an avenue for support and community. “Families often feel isolated when dealing with a diagnosis, therapy, and all aspects of special needs parenting. Our family felt this way too, but not anymore. We became part of something much bigger, and our Honorary Captain, Tanner, continues to inspire us every year for Tanner’s Team!”

ELS CUP RUNNER-UP Lucas’ Steps

$36,000

Team: Tracy Shreckengost & Jim Blood

Regional Event: TPC Twin Cities

Honorary Captain: Lucas Stanbrough

Joining the Golf Challenge since its inception in 2011, Team Lucas’ Steps is one of our longest-standing teams and has fundraised over $550,000 to support Els for Autism.

Diagnosed with autism at age 3, Honorary Captain Lucas Stanbrough has taken many “steps” over the years to break barriers in employment and education. This year, Lucas graduated from high school and spent his summer working as a waiter at a golf club in his hometown.

This fall, he started his freshman year at Ellsworth Community College, where he is working toward an Associate of Arts Degree. “Lucas is living in the dorms and spreading his wings at college,” said his aunt and team co-captain, Tracy Schreckengost. “It is very rewarding to watch him step into adulthood and find his place in life.”

COMMUNITY Partners

Ernie Els #GameON Autism® Golf Clinics

Els for Autism is committed to partnering with like-minded autism organizations throughout the Golf Challenge series. At select regional events, we host an Ernie Els #GameON Autism Golf clinic where we invite local autism organizations to participate, helping them further promote their mission and goals within their communities. These clinics are led by a local golf or recreation-based organization that completes our online training to become an Official Program Provider (OPP) of our curriculum. Alongside the clinic host, we invite an Autism Partner—usually a local nonprofit that brings clients to participate in the clinic. The clinic provides a one-hour introduction to golf, specially tailored for individuals with autism.

To support both organizations, Els for Autism makes a donation to the Golf Provider and the Autism Partner involved in the clinic. Through these clinics, we aim to create an ongoing positive impact that extends beyond the event itself.

“The event was a resounding success, showcasing the power of sports in fostering inclusion and personal growth. While we are a microcosm of the worldwide work of Els for Autism, K2K mirrors their mission, and the collaboration between Els for Autism and K2K exemplifies the positive impact that can be achieved when organizations come together for a common cause. It not only provided a day of fun and learning for the participants but also highlighted the importance of creating inclusive spaces in sports and beyond. As our community continues to embrace diversity and inclusion, events like this golf clinic serve as shining examples of what can be achieved through dedication, collaboration, and a shared vision of a more inclusive world.”

AFFILIATE EVENT Fundraising Totals

(As of October 15, 2024)

An Els for Autism Affiliate Event is a volunteer-run fundraiser that supports Els for Autism as a benefiting charity. These events can be held at any time, in any location around the world. While a golf tournament might come to mind, we have seen an incredible variety of events over the years. From concerts and pet shows to 5K run/walks and fashion shows, we welcome all exciting event ideas!

Each Affiliate Event host—whether an individual, family, company, or organization—is responsible for organizing the event’s program, fundraising efforts, activities, registrations, and volunteers. This allows the host full creative control while supporting a great cause.

AFFILIATE HIGHLIGHT Princess Anne Country Club

The 8th Annual Princess Anne Country Club Pro-Am Invitational took place this year with an exciting mix of top-tier golf, community spirit, and charitable giving. Hosted at the prestigious Princess Anne Country Club in Virginia Beach, the Pro-Am Invitational has grown into a highly anticipated event on the Club’s calendar, bringing together professional golfers, club members, and local enthusiasts for a day of unforgettable golf.

The Pro-Am format makes this event a unique experience for all participants. Amateur players get the chance to team up with seasoned professionals, creating an atmosphere of collaboration, mentorship, and competition. This year, the tournament featured some of the region’s most talented pros along with enthusiastic amateurs looking to sharpen their skills and enjoy a day on the course.

While the Invitational makes for an exciting day of golf, its true purpose lies in making a lasting positive impact. Over the years, the event has raised nearly $2 million, with charitable donations benefiting Els for Autism, F.A.C.T. (Families of Autistic Children in Tidewater), the Virginia Autism Foundation, and SEALKIDS. The Invitational has become a symbol of the Club’s commitment to fostering connections, supporting important causes, and providing members and guests with a truly unique golfing experience.

For Steve Van Horn, the father of a son with autism and one of the event founders, the Invitational holds a special place in his heart. "To be able to give back to an organization like Els for Autism, which has done so much for my family, is incredibly meaningful," he shared. "My son receives life-changing services through Els for Autism, and seeing how this event supports that mission is deeply rewarding. It’s more than just a golf tournament— it’s a way to bring the community together to make a real difference in the lives of children and families like ours.

CELEBRATING OUR Honorary Captains

We are proud to celebrate our Honorary Captains — children, teens, and adults around the world who are impacted by autism. These incredible individuals are the heart and inspiration behind our efforts, motivating teams to take on the challenge and make a meaningful difference. Our Honorary Captains shine a light on the daily realities of autism and showcase the strength it takes to break through the barriers they face along the way.

WELCOME FROM Our Executive Director

Dear Friends,

As we celebrate our 14th annual Golf Challenge, we are incredibly grateful for your commitment over the past year. Your dedication to Els for Autism and the Golf Challenge has once again allowed our team to reach individuals and families affected by autism around the world and help them break through barriers.

During last year’s Grand Finale, we introduced you to our newest social enterprise, U Can Employ (UCE). UCE is a guide for businesses to embrace autism inclusion in their workforce. This year, four partners, including Arcis Golf and Strides Toronto, completed their three-month training program. We’re proud to support Stanley Black & Decker in initiating and successfully completing their training program to become an autism-inclusive employer.

This past Winter, we launched our third newsletter, “State of the Science,” which highlights the research our team has published to date. In fact, our multisite, international golf program evaluation study was published this year in the International Journal of Developmental Disabilities. The Els for Autism team is committed to providing evidence-based programs and services to our clients, and our research supports professionals worldwide in delivering the best care for autistic individuals, grounded in scientific evidence.

During the Spring, we once again celebrated World Autism Month, challenging people to consider how they could make an impact through awareness, acceptance, and action. Through various local and nationwide fundraising efforts, our team collectively raised over $150,000 to further our mission. We concluded April with a special visit from Florida’s Governor, Ron DeSantis, who hosted a press conference on our campus. During this event, he announced the highest level of funding for direct services for individuals with unique abilities in Florida’s history for various organizations, and presented Els for Autism with a second $1 million state

appropriation to support the development of our specialized autism-friendly recreation complex. Just as we witnessed many barriers being broken within our adult services building over the past 15 months, we are excited to provide even more opportunities for breakthroughs with the opening of our recreation complex in the coming years.

Silentdiscoparty

Over the Summer, I had the honor of attending our Golf Challenge regional event at the Philadelphia Country Club. The day was particularly special as I supported an Ernie Els #GameON Autism Golf Clinic for participants of the Eagles Autism Foundation and Project Elijah Empowering Autism. Spending time with those we serve is my favorite part of working at Els for Autism. Through these clinics, we are helping individuals with autism feel included and welcomed to participate in recreational activities while playing on the same top-rated golf courses as you!

Then, as Fall arrived, we launched our fully rebranded website. As we strive to become the world leader in transdisciplinary customized programs for individuals with autism, it was essential for our new website to be user-friendly and a valuable resource for individuals with autism, their families, and professionals around the globe. We are thankful to the many key stakeholders involved in this process. My hope is that elsforautism.org will serve you, your family, and friends in answering questions about autism and show you how our team can help.

As you celebrate your dedication to Els for Autism, please know that you are part of our family, each playing a vital role in breaking barriers for individuals with autism.

With gratitude,

Dr. Marlene Sotelo & Dr. Erin Brooker Lozott

Early Intervention & Education

Els for Autism kicked off 2024 as an early adopter of the FDA-authorized EarliPoint™ autism evaluation tool, enhancing our clinical team’s ability to diagnose children at risk for autism.

Utilizing EarliPoint allows the Els for Autism team to serve more families with reduced wait times while still providing a goldstandard autism evaluation by capturing and analyzing looking behavior imperceptible to the human eye. “Research has proven that the study of social-visual engagement leads to improved autism diagnosis and assessment.” (Source: earlitecdx.com)

For a child, it’s as simple as watching a short video—like scenes of toddlers playing—while the device tracks eye movements at a rate of 120 times per second. Each data point is compared to thousands of measurements within a clinically validated database, providing parents, caregivers, and professionals with timely, objective, and accurate information on potential developmental vulnerabilities.

But our team doesn’t stop at diagnosis. We follow up with a personalized plan of care (POC) for each child and offer support services for their parents. The first child we diagnosed using EarliPoint was 2-year-old Mason.

His mom, Amber Walker, has since become a passionate advocate for Els for Autism after experiencing the value of combining EarliPoint for diagnosis with a POC from our unified team. “After Mason was first diagnosed with autism, I joined online parent support groups. I discovered that no other parents had been given the same opportunity as our family,” said Walker. “Instead, the parents I spoke with said that after their child was diagnosed, they were simply given a list of providers to seek services on their own, all of whom had long waitlists.”

“I now tell everyone about Els for Autism and how they’ve supported my son in making unbelievable breakthroughs, such as learning how to communicate his needs to avoid meltdowns and minimizing his urge to elope, which has given us peace of mind in public places.”

Our clinical team also praises Mason for the progress he’s made in just a few months. He now engages in pretend play, participates in circle time, and joins activities with children in our Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention (EIBI) program. Mason even has his first best friend!

FROM BARRIERS to Breakthroughs Adult Services

Harryson

At our Grand Finale last year, we hosted a cocktail party on our campus to give guests a firsthand look at our newly opened Stoops Family Adult Services Building. We were grateful for the opportunity to provide many of you with tours of the building, which features stateof-the-art classrooms, therapy suites, and vocational labs.

It probably does not come as a surprise that our Big Easy Cafe, one of our vocational labs inside our Adult Services Building, is a fan favorite. However, our cafe is more than just a place to enjoy a meal— it serves as a vocational training lab where many autistic adults are building upon their daily living and vocational skills.

One individual our team has witnessed breaking many barriers is Harryson Mauge, who has worked as a Cafe Team Member since September 2023. Harryson was an extraordinary spokesperson and advocate on World Autism Day, when he shared his story with the local CBS news team covering our celebrations. “To me, disabilities are not just disabilities,” said Harryson, “I think it’s just a different ability.”

Cafe Manager, Jen Wilson says that since Harryson started working at the cafe, he has grown in both his job and his ability to shine as a person with autism. When he started, Harryson struggled to complete his daily tasks before his shift ended. With the support of his cafe teammates and job coaches, he has learned time management skills to

complete his daily workload and has become more resilient when things don’t go as expected, working through challenges more effectively.

Additionally, he always shares with guests of the cafe how important his job is and how his role supports our mission of creating a world of limitless possibilities for individuals with autism. “It has been a pleasure to watch him interact with friends, new customers, and other young adults, teaching them about his love of trucks. He also educates them about how important his job is and how vital we all are to making the world a better and happier place because of our contributions,” said Wilson.

Jen Wilson is also supporting the second group of autistic adult clients enrolled in our 10-week Work Experience (WE) Program, which is designed for autistic adults interested in career exploration or who have a goal of paid employment. In the cafe, our WE participants gain essential skills for the food industry. In fact, participants collaborate with her to create their own specials of the day, which often sell out!

Thanks to the hard work and coordination of our staff, we began welcoming the public to dine in our cafe on the first Friday of every month, allowing the community to experience firsthand how we are helping autistic adults break barriers over some Homemade Happiness.

FROM BARRIERS to Breakthroughs

Recreation Services

Kenzie

Attending summer camp, a tradition many children look forward to each year, was a wish McKenzie (Kenzie) held onto. However, she was often told, “No,” or, “She can attend, but we won’t make any accommodations for her.”

That all changed when her parents applied for her to attend the Els for Autism Moovin’ & Groovin’ Summer Camp in 2023. “I could have literally hugged Greg [Connors, Recreation Manager] and added him to our will,” exclaimed Kenzie’s mom, Julie Webster. “We were partially in disbelief that Kenzie was finally getting a spot at camp.”

Already sharing a love for bike riding, swimming, bowling, and crafting, Kenzie was set to enjoy a fun summer at The Els Center of Excellence with fellow campers.

Before adventurous and sassy Kenzie could arrive, careful planning was necessary. Kenzie was born autistic, profoundly deaf, intellectually disabled, legally blind, unable to regulate her body temperature, and with a malformed bladder, rectum, and reproductive system.

Therefore, before Kenzie began summer camp, Program Director, Erin Booker Lozott called her mom, Julie, and said, ‘What do we need to do to accommodate Kenzie?’

This was a question Julie wasn’t used to hearing. “In the past, we were told by other camps, ‘We don’t understand her,’ or, ‘She needs to be potty trained to attend,’ or, ‘We don’t know American Sign Language (ASL).’”

Under Erin’s leadership, the recreation team and camp counselors prepared for Kenzie’s arrival. Each camp counselor received a laminated book of ASL keywords and directions to communicate with her, and Kenzie received a visual schedule to help her prepare for the day. “She was an entirely different child after the first week of camp,” said Webster.

After her successful camp experience, Kenzie became a regular participant in our afterschool recreation programs. “I’ve been told she’s a yoga master! She loves tennis and golf – asking for tennis every morning when she wakes up,” Webster added.

One of the greatest breakthrough moments happened during our music sessions. “Because of her deafness, she has often been overlooked in this area or told, ‘She can’t hear.’ But the Els for Autism staff included her without hesitation. They taught her to play the bells by matching the colors and got her to drum by feeling the vibrations.”

We were thrilled to welcome Kenzie back to summer camp this year. “All the counselors and even some of the kids are learning sign language to communicate with Kenzie. She loves her friends there. She smiles and acts silly with the teachers. You can tell there is a peace about her,” said Kenzie’s mom. Kenzie’s breakthrough story shows how participating in recreational activities fosters feelings of achievement and enjoyment while promoting inclusion, self-confidence, and an enhanced quality of life.

Our recreation programs already offer a variety of sports and arts activities on campus. With the addition of a specialized autismfriendly recreation complex, we will expand these offerings to include water safety and swim lessons, as well as an indoor space for activities during inclement weather. This space will feature a multipurpose dining area for lunch and afterschool respite between classes, a dedicated fitness room, and a regulation-size basketball court. Additionally, the complex will house a teaching kitchen, providing extended vocational training opportunities through our Food Industry Training curriculum.

MAKE A SPLASH! Recreation Complex

SUPPORT OUR CAPITAL CAMPAIGN to Build a Specialized Autism-Friendly Recreation Complex

Participating in recreational activities is critically important for people with autism and other developmental disorders. Research has shown that recreation, specifically sports, can be an effective supplemental therapy for individuals with autism. Our team has witnessed individuals of all ages break through many barriers while participating in our recreation services.

To expand the recreation activities available at The Els Center of Excellence campus and to provide individuals with autism with a full range of recreation choices, Els for Autism announced the official launch of its Capital Campaign to build a specialized autism-friendly recreation complex.

“Since starting our programs and services in 2015, it has always been our vision to provide the autism community with a robust offering of sports, fitness, arts, leisure, and healthy living programs. Our clients and families deserve a Recreation Complex, so let’s get it built!”

The

Gymnasium

South Florida can experience months of inclement weather including excessive heat, high humidity, and heavy rainfall.

The Stanley Black & Decker Gymnasium will be an indoor space that will provide yearround use for recreational activities.

The Aquatic Center Naming Opportunity Available

The Aquatic Center will include a pool allowing our team to teach specialized swim lessons and water safety. Drowning is the leading cause of death for autistic children, with Florida reporting the highest number of deaths among these children.

The Splash Pad Naming Opportunity Available

The Aquatic Center will also include a Splash Pad allowing individuals who cannot swim, choose not to swim, or fear immersion in the pool to enjoy water experiences and have opportunities for social interactions while feeling safe and secure.

ELS FOR AUTISM Spectrum Award

The Els for Autism Spectrum Award honors an individual with autism spectrum disorder who has shined a positive light on autism through their character, positive attitude, and contribution.

Congratulations to our 2024 winner, Russell Lehmann

Russell Lehmann is a testament to resilience and transformation. As a sought-after public speaker, he has presented at conferences worldwide, from addressing the United States Air Force on the intersectionality of autism and mental illness to delivering a TEDx Talk on “When Ignorance Becomes Awareness.” Russell’s voice is often a much-needed presence in spaces where discussions about autism and disabilities are either sidelined or misunderstood.

At age 3, Russell began experiencing developmental and behavioral symptoms. Despite his parents seeking answers, not a single doctor or specialist understood what was happening. Severe OCD, panic, and depression began consuming Russell’s life, resulting in him dropping out of the fifth grade due to low functioning levels. At the age of 12, Russell was admitted to a psychiatric ward for five weeks, yet left without a diagnosis. Six months later, he was finally diagnosed with autism; however, it took him until the age of 30 to move from recluse to dynamic speaker, poet, and activist.

Breaking through barriers of loneliness and detachment, Russell is now helping countless autistic individuals overcome their own struggles, allowing them to feel seen, heard, and understood.

In a world where society often overlooks or stigmatizes people with disabilities, Russell’s work serves as a reminder of our shared humanity. He doesn’t just raise awareness; he creates spaces where empathy can flourish and true understanding can begin.
