M i ch ael Nath anson Tal k s Th e Puni sh er & more By Rachel Gal vin (This phot o and cover by Chris Loupos)

When getting ready for his first comic book convention, Michael Nathanson took the time to speak to Independent Streak Magazine and talk about his own role in a comic book inspired TV show ?The Punisher? as Sam Stein. ?This is my first comic con as a guest. It's every geek's weird fantasy. It's funny how many people geek 5 out on me,? he said. ?I find it strange... especially

younger people. I take it seriously. I love it. I love the connection with the fans.? Okay, there are about to be some spoil ers, so if you don't want to read them, stop reading now... Nathanson talked a bit about working on the set with actress Amber Rose Revah, who played Dinah Madani. ?We were fast friends from the get-go, like brother and sister. I make her laugh,? he said, adding, ?I knew what happens [the death scene] but kept it from her. I thought it was important to build love and trust and I thought it would get in the way. You don't know when you are going to die. She called when she found out. She was sad. We had become friends so it was hard. We had a close, intense relationship. It was real emotion in the scene.? He added, ?We used a lot of practical effects. It was intense. It felt awful. It felt very real. I am someone who invests 100 percent. There are so many things that you are trying to convey in that moment. If you are in that situation, you are scared, freaked out, trying to juggle all emotions at once. I was freezing cold. There was fake blood running all over me.? When asked if he is method, he said, ?No, I go in, turn it off. I try to invest and then get out as quick as possible. I don't want to sit in that.? He had to undergo a lot of weapons training before

going into this role. He spent a lot of time in a training facility where he said actors who play superheros train. He explained, ?It was super fun. We learned all sorts of techniques, how to hold the gun, hit targets. We did hand to hand combat training. It was fun to work on hitting targets.? This role is different from some of the other roles he has played, like Dr. Levi Zinberg in ?The Knick,? Barry Kleinman in ?Wolf of Wall Street? and Lew Fogelman, and so many other roles in shows like ?The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,? ?Orange is the New Black? and ?The Good Life,? among others. Nathanson said he studied many acting methods in college, Northwestern State, but was never interested in any particular method. He created his own method. He was part of a production of ?Tracers? while there and hung out with real Vietnam Vets. That experience, he said, was one of the most life changing experiences while there. While at the school, he really felt the power of storytelling and acting. ?That set me on my path,? he said, adding he felt he had a mission to get into this career.
