ABOUT US Jamaica Diaspora Education Taskforce (JDETF) is a member of the Jamaica Diaspora Taskforce Action Network (JDTAN) and provides support, resources, workshops & networking opportunities for educators in Jamaica. JDTAN is a network of 15 sectoral focused Diaspora Taskforces with members across 21 countries. Taskforces have been operating for the past seven years as a collaborative approach to engage, and mobilize the Jamaican Diaspora to join forces and support Jamaica in achieving Jamaica Vision 2030 and United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs.). JDETF was formed to support the needs of education professionals in Jamaica. The Taskforce partners with organizations in Jamaica and the diaspora to provide workshops, networking meetings, conferences and mentoring opportunities.. Message from JDTAN's Chairman March 2022 Education Summit was a milestone as it was Jamaica Diaspora Taskforce Action Network’s (JDTAN) first face-to-face event since spring 2019. If you missed the faceto-face ebony, this a made for you. Under the theme, "Pushing Forward with Resilience, Inclusion, Capacity, Equity." We are happy to bring experts from Jamaica, and from various school systems across Diaspora.

With the worst portion of the COVID19 pandemic behind us, it is time for us to start preparing for the future in education. Whatever the future holds, JDTAN must begin creating a future that aligns with the best practices in education, to meet the needs of children in Jamaica. I wish to welcome all educators; teachers, administrators, and practitioners; from all levels of the Jamaican education system. This opportunity is opened to offer professional instructions and development workshops, and panel discussions, to engage educators and help prepare them for the future of education in Jamaica. The collective of the five Jamaica Diaspora Education Task Forces (arms of the JDTAN) is hosting their upcoming Virtual Education Summit on August 8-9, 2022. I congratulate Dr. Noel Gordon, Dr. Sherian Demetrius, and Ms. Andrea Thomas, who chaired the planning committee for this virtual session. Well done! It is essential to note; however, that several other key individuals from the diaspora, and from the Jamaican educational system, collaborated on a very effective action plan. Message From Planning Chairs The Jamaica Diaspora Education Task Force (JDETF), in conjunction with Jamaica Diaspora Taskforce Action Network (JDTAN) welcome you to its Annual Virtual Education Summer Conference, on August 8-9, 2022. This virtual conference aims to continue the mission to advance education in achieving Jamaica’s Vision 2030. Under the theme, Pushing Forward with Resilience, Inclusion, Capacity, Equity (R.I.C.E), this two-day conference is designed to benefit all educators in Jamaica. Conference topics include Why Best Practice Matters, Restorative Practice and its Implication for Teaching and Learning, Optimizing Your School’s Success Through Transformational Leadership, Building Bridges with Parents to Promote Next Level Family Engagement, and Optimizing Your Students’ Success Through Equity and Excellence in Instructional Practices. Ms. Andrea Thomas, Conference Planning Committee Co-chair, and Chair of the Jamaica Diaspora Educational Leadership Taskforce said, “I am looking forward to two days of stimulating educational conversations. Dr. Donna Powell Wilson Executive Director of the Council of Community Colleges of Jamaica. Her professional qualification spans Doctor of Philosophy in Curriculum and Instruction, Northern Caribbean University; Master of Science in Educational Technology, University of British Columbia; Master of Science in Educational Leadership, Central Connecticut University; Bachelor of Science in Education, the University of the West Indies, Mona; Diploma in Teacher Education, Passley Gardens Teachers' College. She is a board member of the Tarrant Primary School; a member of the Curriculum Committee of the Nursing Council of Jamaica; and a co-founder of EdTech Jamaica. Dr. Powell Wilson is a Justice of the Peace for the parish of St. Catherine
Mrs. Yvonne Campbell, J.P – is a retired educator and Executive Director of Missionaries Outreach Ministries International. She served as a teacher at Dinthill Technical High School and Ewarton Secondary School. She was employed at the Ministry of Education from 1991 until 2014. She served as Supervisor of Guidance Counselors, Substance Abuse Trainer, regional Guidance and Counseling Officer, Senior Education Officer and head of the Independent Schools Unit. Mrs. Campbell is a graduate of Mico College, has a Bachelor of Science from the University of Western Caroline in Educational Administration and a Master of Science in Sociology from the University of the West Indies. Ms. Andrea M. Thomas, Vice Chair of the Jamaica Diaspora Primary & Secondary Education Taskforce, attended Iona College, where she earned a bachelor's degree in Communications. After spending a decade as a project manager on Wall Street, Ms. Thomas felt called to a new career in Education. She left her corporate salary to pursue a life of service in Education. She earned a master's degree in Elementary Education and a second master's degree in administration and supervision, with a minor in Special Education. Ms. Thomas is currently enrolled at Concordia University – Wisconsin, where she will earn a doctoral degree in Leadership, Innovation, and Continuous Improvement.
Mrs. Natalee Roper-Allen is the principal of Goshen Primary School in St. Elizabeth. She is a result-driven administrator with over 26 years of classroom experience. Mrs. Roper-Allen is a Family and Consumer Studies specialist in teaching Exceptional Children, Justice of the Peace, Child Diversion Officer, and a trained Mentor. She leads as a Mentor for the Church of God in Jamaica, National Bible Quiz Coordinator, and as Chairman of the Christian Education Committee for Region 2 of the Church of God in Jamaica. In addition, she serves as an executive member of QEC 40 (Quality Education Circle) for Region 5. 12
Mr. Eaton McNamee is the principal of the Broadleaf Primary School in Manchester, a Native of the parish of St. Thomas, who holds a Diploma in Ed (MICO), Bachelors in Ed, and Masters in Ed (U.W.I.). He has taught all facets of the education system, from Early Childhood to tertiary. He is presently President of the Manchester J.T.A. chapter. In addition, he serves at Manchester 4-H clubs as Chairman of the Parish Advisory Council, Executive Member of Manchester Peace Coalition, and Member of the Advisory Board of the Windsor Lodge and Hanbury Children's homes. A dynamic individual with the gift to lighten up anyone's day, he lives by the philosophy that "Life is fulfilling when the things you think, say, do are in harmony with your spirituality."
Mr. Winston Smith has been the President of the Jamaica Teachers’ Association since 2017. Mr. Smith has been the Principal of Golden Spring Primary School and Constitution Hill Primary School; as well as a teacher at Papine High School. He is a graduate of St. Elizabeth Technical High School. Mr. Smith holds a Diploma in Teaching from the College of Agriculture, Science and Education and a Bachelor of Science degree in Management Studies from the University of the West Indies. He is pursuing a master's in education administration from the University of the West Indies. Mr. Smith is committed to 'Bridging the digital and social divide: Transforming education for economic growth and sustainable development.'
Dean Michael Salmon, is Associate Vice-President / Dean of Academic Excellence and Senior Advisor to the President of Marymount Manhattan College. He advises the President and several senior leaders on various strategic initiatives and student-centered projects. He has a bachelor's and M.Sc. in Economics from the University of the West Indies and has completed doctoral coursework at New York University. He has over fifteen-year experience in teaching across a wide variety of subject areas. He has been a Director on the Board of the Union of Jamaican Alumni Association since 2019.
Mrs. Michelle Campbell, Director of Cross-Sectoral Coordination at the Early Childhood Commission, has been with the commission for the past 12 years. She currently leads the coordinated and integrated delivery of early childhood programs and services across Ministries, agencies, and stakeholders. Mrs. Campbell holds a bachelor's and a master's degree in Early Childhood Education from Nova Southeastern University and a specialized Graduate Certificate in working with infants and toddlers with Special Needs from the University of Central Florida. 12

Dr. Albert Benjamin is (Acting) Vice President of Academic Affairs at the Mico University College. He has a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and Master of Education from the University of the West Indies, a Diploma in Teaching from the Mico University College, and a doctoral degree in Teacher Identity from the University of Sheffield (U.K.). He has done pioneering work in developing S.T.E.M. curricula for higher education and teacher professional development and is presently a member of the National S.T.E.M. Taskforce. His research interests include teacher professional identity and effective pedagogies in science teacher education. He has successfully led several International S.T.E.M. consultancies with the IDB, OAS ITEN, and the British Council.
Dr. Megan Swaby is a Clinical Psychologist and Lecturer in the Department of Behavioral Sciences at The Mico University College. She is trained in Restorative Practices and often facilitates behavior management workshops with various schools across the island. Her primary research interests are in childhood depression and trauma
Dr. Margaret Chin, Assistant Secretary General at the Jamaica Teachers' Association, is a 22-year veteran educator, local and regional workshop Presenter, and Conference Speaker. She received her Doctorate in Education from the University of Sheffield in England, an M.Sc. in Special Education from Nova Southeastern University, and a BSc. in School Counseling from Western Carolina University. She also holds certification in Early Childhood Education from the University of the West Indies. A former Lecturer at the Mico University College in the Department of Special Education, Dr. Chin also has experience at the early childhood, primary and secondary levels in Guidance and Counseling, 14
Mrs. Elaine Foster-Allen holds a Master of Philosophy in Theology, and a Bachelor of Education from the Universities of Birmingham and Nottingham. Mrs. Foster-Allen is an Education Specialist/Consultant and served as Principal of Shortwood Teachers' College. She has served as Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Office of the Prime Minister and also the Ministry of Education. Mrs. Foster Allen was the first Chief Inspector of Education for Jamaica, she has worked as an Education Officer with the Ministry of Education Youth and Culture, and served as the principal of a local high school. She currently serves as a member of the National Council on Education and the National Education Sector Committee. Mr. Courtney Thomas has been a Lecturer at The Mico University College since 2016 with approximately thirty years of experience as a classroom teacher and a guidance counselor. In addition, he is a marriage officer with over twenty years of experience as a pastor within the Church of the First Born of Jamaica. He is in the process of completing the practicum as a restorative Justice facilitator. He has a Master of Arts degree in Pastoral Psychology and Counselling (St Stephens College), a Bachelor of Arts in General Studies with an emphasis in Guidance and Counselling (Jamaica Theological Seminary), and diplomas in Career Counselling and Teaching (Vocational Training Development Institute and Mico) along with other professional certificates. Mrs. Pauleen Reid received her certification at Shortwood Teachers' College, a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English and a Master of Science in Educational Leadership from Central Connecticut State University. Mrs. Reid's achievements have captured national attention, as she was named Lasco Principal of the Year ('10-'11) and received the Prime Minister's Medal of Appreciation for Outstanding Contributions to Education. She has served in a variety of positions including President of The Association of Principals and Vice–Principals; founding Principal of Holland High School; member of The Advisory Board of The National College for Educational Leadership; and as a Director on the Board of Victoria Mutual Foundation. Dr. Noel Gordon, Chair of the Jamaica Diaspora Primary & Secondary Education Taskforce, earned a bachelor's degree in science from the University of the West Indies; a master's degree in human resources/organizational development, with a major in guidance and counseling services, and a second master's degree in administration and supervision, with a major in educator training from Montclair State University; and a doctoral degree in educational leadership from Nova Southeastern University. In the New Jersey public school system, he served in several capacities including Director of Guidance, Director of Testing and Evaluation, and Director of Curriculum and Instruction. 15
Dosseth Edwards-Watson Ph.D., is the Chief Executive Officer of the Trench Town Polytechnic College. She has distinguished herself as an exemplary transformational leader, an educational leadership researcher, instructional coach, workshop facilitator, and school improvement specialist. Dr. Watson earned her Doctorate and a Master of Education at the University of the West Indies; a Master of Arts, and a Post Graduate Diploma in Education from the Indira Gandhi National Open University. In addition, she holds a Bachelor of Education from the University of Technology; a Diploma in Teaching from Shortwood Teachers' College and numerous credentials in Technical/Vocational Education. Ms. Tanisha Miller is a Behavior Change Consultant and an Advocacy Specialist for children. Over the years, she has worked with Jamaica Association for the Deaf as a project coordinator and manager of adult services. In addition, she works with the Ministry of Health as the Regional P.L.H.I.V. Liaison Officer and has served inmates with H.I.V. in penal institutions. Ms. Miller has a bachelor's degree in mass communication with an emphasis in Public Relations and Radio Broadcasting from the Northern Caribbean University and Law from the University of Leicester. In addition, she has her master's degree in communication for Social and Behavior Change from the University of the West Indies. Ms. Karlene Largie attended Immaculate Conception H.S. and taught primary school a short time before migrating. She is retired after spending 32 successful years moving up the leadership ladder in corporate America's banking industry. She is the immediate past president of The Union of Jamaican Alumni Associations (U.S.A.) Inc. She is currently the Corresponding Secretary and Co-Chair of the Education & Diaspora Committee. After serving as the President for over 12 years, Ms. Largie is the current Vice-President of her alma mater's alumnae association's N.Y. Chapter. In addition, Karlene is a founding member of the Jamaica Diaspora Education Task Force (J.D.E.T.F.), assisting in the advancement of Education in Jamaica. Dr. Colin Wolfe is a retired principal and educational consultant. He earned a doctoral degree in Educational Leadership from North Central University, an M.S. degree in Teaching from The City University of New York, a second M.S. degree in Educational Administration and Supervision from The City University of New York, a Bachelors of Arts degree from The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, and a Certificate in Teaching from The Mico Teachers' College. Wolfe began his teaching career at the St. Hughes High School for Girls and later migrated to the U.S., where he served in many capacities before becoming a Principal. Dr. Wolfe is currently the President and C.E.O of Pro-Knowledge Consultancy. 16
Dr. Marie Gaboton-Swift, Director of Equity and Inclusion, is a veteran educator with twenty-three years of experience serving children and families in New York. She obtained her Ph.D. in Counselling Psychology and a master's degree in School Counselling from Capella University. In addition, she holds a Master's in Secondary Education from Brooklyn College, an Advanced Certificate in School District Leadership from Niagara University, and a bachelor's degree from Marymount College Tarrytown. Dr. Gaboton-Swift is a former classroom teacher, a practicing School Counselor, Curriculum Writer, and Counsellor Educator at Mercy College School of Social and Behavioral Science.
Mrs. Karlene DeGrasse-Deslandes is the Executive Director of the Early Childhood Commission (E.C.C.), Jamaica's agency responsible for the Early Childhood Sector. She graduated from the University of the West Indies and acquired a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History and Economics and a Postgraduate Diploma in Social Work. She pursued further postgraduate studies in Social Work Policy and Administration at Florida State University (F.S.U.), Tallahassee, Florida. She remains passionate about children and is currently Jamaica's representative on C.A.R.I.C.O.M.'s Technical Working Group for Early Childhood.
Dr. Clover Hamilton-Flowers is the Acting Deputy Chief Education Officer for Curriculum and Support Services. She collaborates with various Units and Agencies of the MoEY in ensuring the development of a national curriculum that is consistent with policy and standards. She provides leadership to the Units responsible for developing and implementing solutions to problems in Special Education, Guidance Counselling, Curriculum, and Educational Technology. She has contributed to the various initiatives for the professional development of Education Officers, Classroom Teachers, Educational Leaders, and Teacher Educators locally and abroad. Dr. Dianna Davis-Smith, President at Catholic College of Mandeville is the first Jamaican to serve in this leadership position. As President, Dr. Davis-Smith has sought to reinvent the college's offerings and ensure adherence to local and international tertiary education benchmarks. Dr. Davis-Smith is a certified Coach and Trainer of Emotional Intelligence and Restorative Practices and is currently designing the introduction of S.E.L. skills for incorporation into the training of all C.C.M. teachers. Although she is a Public Speaking lecturer at C.C.M., her academic background is diverse, with a master's degree in Business Administration from Nova Southeastern University and a Ph.D. in Education. 17
Christopher C. Clarke, PhD is the Principal of Midland Bible Institute. Dr. Clarke gained his doctorate at the University of South Florida. He pursued his masters at the McGill University and his Bachelors at the UWI, Mona. He has also served as adjunct faculty for the University of South Florida, University of the West Indies, University of Technology, Caribbean Graduate School of Theology, and has been a facilitator in the Master of Education offered by St. Mary’s University of Minnesota and the Catholic College of Mandeville since its inception in 2007. He currently serves as an assessor and facilitator for the National College of Educational Leadership and Chair of the Verification Committee of MIND.
Lesleyann Samuel is U.J.A.A.'s current President and has served in this position for 7+ years. She is also the Assistant Treasurer for her alma mater - Immaculate Conception High School Alumnae Association New York chapter. In addition, Ms. Samuel is a Technical Writer for a large telecommunications company. She has been an adjunct professor in the Business Department of the University of Maryland's Global Campus for the past 21 years. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania.
Mrs. Sophia Nicholson – Actress – TV Host – Media Personality. is a native Jamaican who resides in South Florida. She is currently the host of 'Di Kulture Zone' aired on IrieTimestv.com and a storyteller on The Caribbean Edge Kids, a Facebook live-streamed program. Sophia specializes in voice-overs, print and video Commercials, news anchor for radio and records, audiobooks, and lectures for nursing institutions. In addition, she is an event coordinator, poetry performer, and host for cultural events and charitable organizations both here and abroad. Sophia volunteers with many charitable organizations in South Florida. I
Sherian Demetrius, Ph.D., Co-Chair of the Jamaica Diaspora Early Childhood Education Taskforce, strongly believes in shaping young lives into strong, fully rounded contributing members of society. She is an educational leader that believes in empowering fellow educators, students, and administrators. She has a bachelor's Degree in Education, a Master of Science in Varying Exceptionalities from Nova Southeastern University, and a doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction, Reading, and Language Cognition from Barry University. She is currently the Curriculum Specialist for the Miami-Dade County Public Schools
