Design Justification My design aims to create a library for the community and bring everyone together within it. In modern society libraries are becoming less popular due to the introduction of digital books and other means of acquiring reading material. Therefor I wanted my library to create other reasons for the community to come to the library.
Through Passage and Void I created a public passage that links to a void of the library. Within the library there is a community gallery and a communal meeting room, to bring the community up into the library. My library also houses the market, which will bring the general public shopping for food to library aswell.

Week 1
Progression
1
After listening to the ‘In Our Time: The Written World’ BBC radio broadcast, my thoughts were that as we read written words we go on a journey. We begin in the unknown and travel to the known.
2
We start in confusion and end in enlightenment. Therefor I wished my 1st 5 models to show this voyage. Model 1 shows a journey from darkness and a small space to a large light space. Model 2
3
represents travelling from a distressing confusion to a calm enlightenment. My 3rd model shows another trip progression from dark to light, especially in the shadows of its form. Model
4
5
4 shows a pathway through the confusion to peaceful clarification. Finally Model 5 symbolises an inaccessible place, suggesting that perhaps one can never fully understand or know something.

My next 5 models explored pathways. I experimented with mixing the different conditions from week 1 to create paths and spaces with different feelings. I also investigated creating different voids within a shape to further explore my idea of an inaccessible area.

Week 3
Void and Passage
11
During week 3 I did a study of pathways leading through an object. One key idea I focussed on was 2 routes passing each other, sometimes impacting on one another and sometimes not.
12
The 2 models that stood out from this exploration were Models 13 and 15. I liked the way the path impacted on the void space in Model 13 and thought I could apply this to Model 15. The void

spaces running through the models were a development of the inaccessible space from previous models.

My final models wished to develop on the idea of voids creating paths through a solid and one impacting on the other so as they are aware of each other. The model that stood out from this week was model 18, which was a development of Models 13 and 15.

The site I chose is in Trastevere. It is a large square with a fruit market and children’s play area. It’s busy centre of Trastevere with 2 main roads on either side. Therefor there is a lot of traffic and people passing through. My design would have to reflect the different uses of the site and accommodate them.

Library-Void and Passage
After the visit to Rome I decided my finally resolution from the 20 models excercise would be well suited to the Trastevere site. I developed the idea further to create an awareness between
the tunnel and void. I decided the tunnel would serve as a replacement for the market building and the void would allow light into the library. After further studies, I developed
the form to allow sunlight into neighbouring buildings.

Materials
Crumbling Roman buildings
My library is made from in-situ concrete, cast with a texture to make it feel worn and rugged to fit in with the crumbling buildings of Rome. Despite its modern form this makes the design feel slightly more historic.
Concrete Texture
Texture on plan shows paved area
Around the market and footprint of my library, the ground is paved with white granite tiles which would sparkle in the Roman sunshine. This paving locks together the market and library and also links with the nearby play park, creating a great community space.
