About the project Artist statement As a relatively new photographer, I’m always on the lookout for equipment that I could use in the future of my craft. Of the things I’ve read about from various resources, a 50mm lens was one of those essential pieces to a photographer’s “collection” and was something I had had my eye on for a long time. Even though I wasn’t sure at first whether I would ever want to do portraiture or work with people in the future, after working with a fellow photographer and seeing what the lens could do, I knew it was something I would love to have. In May 2013, I purchased my very own 50mm lens (f/1.8) for my Nikon but, of course, I wasn’t sure how to go about using it and what I would even use it for. It wasn’t until I started planning my final portfolio for the Fashion & Glamour Photography class I was taking that I figured out the best way to learn a new lens: Use the lens, and only that lens, to shoot an entire project. And that’s exactly what I did. This portfolio was shot entirely using my 50mm lens and I can now say with confidence that not only is the 50mm one of my favorite lenses, but any qualms I had about working with models/people are now minimal, if not entirely gone. Working on this portfolio also, without trying, has become an excellent representation of what I’ve gained from my college experience and something I have often reflected on with mere weeks left until graduation. Just as I was unsure and nervous about working with models but am now more than confident in doing so after completing this portfolio, college has transformed me from a shy recluse of a girl to a confident and outspoken woman ready to take on the world. While I have included a thank you section at the end of this portfolio, I would like to take this opportunity right away to thank not only my models who helped me complete this project, but everyone - both peers and teachers alike - who have helped me make it through the last five and a half years of school and have stuck with me through it all. Know that I truly appreciate all of you.
