ABOUT KAT VON D

Katherine von Drachenberg

K

atherine von Drachenberg, best known as Kat Von D, was born on March 8, 1982, in Nuevo Leon, Mexico. Her parents, RenÊ Drachenberg and Sylvia Galeano, are both from Argentina, but her father is of German descent and her mother is of Spanish-Italian descent. Kat moved to the United States when she was four, settling in Colton, California. Kat’s paternal grandmother, Clara, played a significant role in shaping her artistic development, particularly in playing the piano and exposing her to the great composers, which, as anyone who knows her can attest to, led to her love for the works of Beethoven. Kat credits her grandmother as an inspiration for her in music and art. She maintains a strong relationship with her parents and her siblings - her brother, Michael, and her sister, Karoline - and finding time to spend with family is a priority.

FAST FACTS In July 2007, she decided to quit drinking after it started to threaten her work. She is fluent in Spanish; it is her first language. Kat collects vintage platform shoes and designer clothing. Kat claims to have known since she was 7 years old that she would never have kids, but she actively works with children through volunteering. Her favorite artist is Kore Flatmo, based in Cincinnati; he tattooed the eyeball on her hand. She is obsessed with photos of downtown LA. She has a tattoo portrait of her sister on her left arm. Her favorite movies: The Devil’s Rejects,

there about once a month to tattoo. She also owns three pianos, one housed in Dallas and two in Hollywood. She loves skateboarding and skateboards to work all the time.

CAREER Her first tattoo came at the age of 14, an Old English “J” on her ankle as a memento of a love gone-by. Shortly thereafter, realizing her natural ability, her friends asked her to pick up a machine and get to work on them in early 1996. Her first effort was a Misfits skull with a homemade rig. The tattooing wasn’t easy, but she knew it felt right and she knew she wanted to pursue it. In 1998, Kat quit school at the age of 16 and began working in her first professional shop, Sin City Tattoo in Pasadena for a year. Then, later on, she ended up at Red Hot Tattoo in Arcadia. A little under two years later, she started working with a talented bunch at Inflictions, a shop in Covina, California. This was a great period of growth in her work and led to her eventually moving down to True Tattoo for a chance to work with Clay Decker and Chris Garver. Any tattooist worth their salt can see what an honor and an opportunity this was, and any one who had know Kat over the course of her career to that point knew that not only did she deserve the chance but was sincere and talented enough to add to the already high standards of that shop. In addition, it afforded her the opportunity to live and work in Hollyowod, the heart of the city that she loves - Los Angeles. Kat credits the Latino culture of Los Angeles as a major influence on her tattoo and style. With this group together and the quality of the visiting artists and the additions to the line-up over the years, True Tattoo has become one of the shops that any real enthusiast (whether artist or client) must visit, a place where something great is always happening. She was asked to work at 305 Ink (now Love Hate Ink) in Miami when Darren

as Alkaline Trio’s “Help Me.” Kat was also referred to in the Eagles of Death Metal song “High Voltage,” which was named after her shop and is featured on their third album, Heart On. In an interview, Eagles of Death Metal’s Jesse Hughes said, “I wrote that for Kat Von D, because that girl’s bad ass.”

However, Kat subsequently acquired her own TLC series, LA Ink, which chronicled her work at her tattoo shop, High Voltage Tattoo in Hollywood, California. LA Ink ran for four seasons, ending September 15, 2011.

As well as cameos and various chat show appearances, TV, film, and video game appearances include:

fter leaving hit program Miami Ink because of a dispute with her fellow cast members, Kat Von D moved back to Los Angeles to open her own tattoo shop and was offered a spin off show. Initially, she hired her close friend Amber “Pixie Acia to be the shop manager and her good friend Corey Miller as the tattoo artist. After considering many more artists for the job, Kat hired Hannah Aitchison and Kim Saigh to work for her as well. The cameras follow her as she opens the shop, while capturing everything that unfolds in between. Inevitably as the show progressed, changes occurred. Kat fired Pixie in the second half of Season 1. Kim and Hannah left the show after the Season 2 finale. Season 3, former Rock of Love competitor Aubry Fisher premiered as new shop manager, but she was fired mid-Season 3 after getting into a lot of trouble with most of the people at the shop. Tattoo artist Amy Nicoletto was hired on a trial basis, but left to work at American Electric. Tattoo artist Paulie Tattoo was also hired and quit to go to American Electric because of lack of work.

After a year of strict dedication and focus, he became a “professional” tattoo artist. After only 2.5 years tattooing, he and his Boston Terrier, Houdini, moved to Burbank, California, in October 2010 to work on Concept Illustration, Creature Design, and Sculpting for Tom Devlin’s 1313FX. Nate favors imagery that proposes a creative challenge for him and making each piece original for the individual client, while executing it in a way that withstands the test of time.

COSMETICS AND FRAGRANCE

P

eople have always asked me what I would be doing if i wasn’t a tattoo-er,” says Kat Von D, TV tattoo artist, TV star, and owner of High Voltage Tattoo. “The only other thing I could imagine is doing makeup!” Kat may not be “doing” makeup in the artistic sense, but boy can she create it. A Kat conception inside and out, her Sephora-exclusive makeup collection is the perfect distillation of her personal style, passion for makeup, and creative background. Although she has been professionally inking since 1998, Kat’s love for makeup

started much earlier. “The first time I ever wore makeup was at the age of 7, after sneaking into my mother’s makeup drawer,” she says. “Growing up, my mom was always beautiful, with or without makeup. But man, oh man! When she did wear makeup, I noticed it changed everything: the way she walked, talked, and smiled.” Her recognizable look - consisting of dark, smoky cat eyes and racy red lips - shows she’s a sexy, enterprising libertine who’s not afraid to speak her mind. This early awareness of makeup’s transformational qualities and her innovative style is one of the reason’s Kat’s makeup collection reigns supreme at Sephora.

n Go Big or Go Home, her most intensely personal work yet, Kat Von D raises the expository and tattoo bar as she writes candidly about her greatest desires, fears, successes, and failures, and shares how she has dealt with them - for better or worse. In seven thematic essays, she addresses issues close to her heart

and draws on engaging and inspiring stories from her own life and those of her clients throughout each section. Aligned with this focus on risk taking, making bold moves, and taking responsibility for her actions is Kat’s decision to create only large-scale tattoos especially for this book. Each tattoo represents a two-fold commitment: one from Kat as an artist, and the other from the client, for whom the tattoo almost always represents a significant event or a visible manifestation of his or her evolving inner self. Filled with Kat’s sketches, handwriting, and specially commissioned photographs of tattoos - both in process and complete - Go Big or Go Home features a range of astounding work both on regular citizens and the many celebrities who seek her out, including • Songwriter Linda Perry • Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong • Actor Ewan MacGregor • Rapper Game • Comedian Bobcat Goldthwait Above all, this special book captures the candor, compassion, and enormous talent of an artist beloved by millions worldwide. - from barnesandnoble.com

CLOTHING LINE

T

he Kat Von D Clothing LIne was launched in autumn (roughly October) of 2011.

She launched a collection featuring coats, shirts, tights, and dresses, and more, which appear to have taken inspiration from classic and gothic sources. Describing the collection, a statement on her website reads: “For Fall 2011, the overall theme was influenced by Love Letters. Over the years, I’ve saved every single letter, note, and card given to me by loves. Reading through them, each one triggers beautiful feelings, some are more melancholic than others, but all beautiful nonetheless. I thought about my favorite love story of all time, which is the tale of Ludwig von Beethoven’s ‘Immortal Beloved’ - a mystery that even now

has never been truly solved. When I put on the ‘Beethoven’ jacket, or the ‘Fur Elise’ pants, I feel tragically romantic.” Kat has played with a diverse spectrum of textures in the fabrics and the subtle details to everything: from the buttons and the hardware, to her interpretation of a toile de jouy pattern used for the lining of many of the pieces. She revealed she sees the collection as an extension of her work as an artist, and in keeping with her established style, explaining, “The purpose of me creating this clothing line is to share what Mom taught me - ‘Express yourself through your art, whether it’s your drawings in a sketchpad, tattoos on your skin, the shade of your lipstick, or the clothes that you wear.’”

W

hat inspires Kat?

“The inspiration for the line varies from elements of nature to architecture, to love letters, to all things from time passed, with a modern romantic approach,” she explains. Plenty of emphasis has also been placed on wearability and comfort. “I’ve become most attached to the highly tailored pieces, especially the coats,” Kat says. The Napoleon jacket, a military-style coat, is her favorite. She added: “By no means am I rebelling from my tattoo roots, but I am showing the world what truly inspires me.” Rather than the Ed Hardy-esque wares you might expect, Kat’s first collection has a tasteful gothic flair inspired by historical figures like Beethoven and Poe. Not a skull or pin-up girl print in sight! “It was easy to predict that most people would be pleasantly surprised by the sophistication of the line,” she tells PEOPLE. This balance means one will be able to adopt a unique, fearless style that will definitely allow you to explore your feminine side as well without falling into the “way too girly” side. Plenty of black, lace, and vintagelooking hardware adorn pieces like military coats, shiny leggings, and distressed sweaters. The line ranges from $259 to $429 for jackets and coats

To me, I think it’s important when creating anything for the public, that it is something that all walks of life can feel connected to. If you stick to your guns and create rom a genuine place, there is a way to find a balance between the ‘extreme’ and the ‘safe.’

MUSIC

A

fter her split from Jesse James and the cancellation of LA Ink in 2011, Kat Von D found solace in music and has since been recording her first album. While Kat hasn’t had prior professional musical experience, she sees recording as another creative outlet. “I’ve been passionate about music all my life,” she says. “I’ve been playing classical piano since I was six. So I understand the form, but it will be fun to be able to translate a message.” It was unsure in October 2011 whether any of the songs will reference her broken engagement, but the Beethoven fanatic did say the sound will be “more on the dark, more tragically romantic” side. Kat’s musical influences include Guns N’ Roses, Metallica, AC/DC, Depeche Mode, and The Cure. While the album is still in the works, Kat has performed with on various occasions with other musicians. Such events included 2011’s Fashion Week in New York with the Sounds’ singer Maja Ivarsson performing Guns N’ Roses’ “November Rain” at a Sephora store location. Her actual debut perofrmance on keyboard and vocals was at An Evening with Women, which benefited the Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Center. She played “Small Town Boy” by 80s synthpop trio Bronski Beat, accompanied by former Limp Bizkit member Wes Borland on bass and Danny Lohner, who has worked with Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson, on guitar. Also, a week before the Evening with Women event, she flew to Sweden to record with goth-rock band The 69 Eyes. She has sung guest vocals on their track “Rosary Blue.”

In August 2013, Kat revealed that her long-awaited debut album will feature drums by “dearest friend” Dave Grohl. She has posted two short Instagram videos of one of her tracks, “Lost at Sea,” which was co-written by Canadian Kevin “Hevvy Mental” Maher of the band Fake Shark - Real Zombie!, who is better known for his production work with Carly Rae Jepsen. No official title or release date has been announced for Kat’s album, but she has gradually dropped hints to her fans directly through social media. Her primary creative collaborator appears to be Lohner and she’s worked with songwriter Linda Perry and her ex-fiance DeadMau5. The latest sample of her music indicates that her music will likely sound much like her public persona: playfully sexy and rock ‘n’ roll. She posted a short set list of three songs that she had been rehearsed for a show on August 20 - “Enough,” “Satellite,” and “Easy to Please.” On her YouTube page, demos of two songs - a Kat original called “Vanish” and a cover of “Re-Offender” by Traviscan also be heard.
