Senior Captain Profiles
Will Gebhardt Most difficult part of cross country: The most difficult thing is maintaining your breathing rhythm. Most satisfying part of cross country: The most satisfying thing about Cross Country is getting my Personal Record (PR) in a race. Who is your biggest rival? The biggest rivalry is probably Cedarburg, but there are a lot of individual rivalries. Why did you choose cross country? I got into Cross Country because of good things I heard from older kids, and I thought it would be a good fit for me. Who is your biggest inspiration? My biggest inspiration is Steve Prefontaine, an international track star. Do you plan on continuing running in college? I plan on doing some intramurals stuff, and maybe keep running noncompetitively.
Danny Knuth Most embarassing moment during cross country: After a summer practice before my junior year, we went to Panera to get bagels. We walked in to order and little did I realize that I had no shoes on, no shirt, just neon green short shorts that complemented my legs very well. The cashier was looking at me, and it was super awkward. Most difficult part of cross country: We run...a lot. It is a mental sport, and pushing yourself to go faster and run harder when you think you can’t give anymore is by far the hardest part. Most satisfying part of cross country: The greatest feeling is the sense of self-accomplishment as you finish a hard workout or break one of your Personal Records in a race. Of course, we all live for that approving nod from Coach Claussen and his occasional, “awesome, awesome,” as we walk by. Who is your biggest rival? Cedarburg. All of the guys are working hard for sectionals, especially Thomas Miller and Evan Routhier, and we are working hard to beat them to make it to state. Why did you choose cross country? I got into running originally because of my brother, Conner. He was a junior on the varsity running team as I entered high school. He pushed me to join the team and from there it just stuck. The team, the coaches and the traditions they had were amazing. It was a great way to meet new friends before the school year started and, like I said, running just has a satisfaction to it, where you can run in the morning and then lounge around all day and still feel like you did something. It’s a great sport. I love it.

8 Steps to a Perfect 5k 1. Carbo load the night before. 2. Drink plenty of water the day before and the day of your race in preparation. 2. Don’t skip your ten minute warm-up run. 3. Stretch all of your muscles before your race. 4. Pace yourself and have fun!

The girls cross country team trains extensively every day after school in order to perform their best at their 5K meets. Claire O’Brien, sophomore, (left) demonstrates the circuit training program the girls use to improve their strength and endurance. If injuries happen to befall any of the runners, the girls still get in their workouts in the bike room (right), or the pool.

Kick. Noah Harrison, senior, takes a corner kick in the first half of a game against Grafton. In the last game against the Blackhawks, Homestead scored an early goal off of one of Harrison’s kicks. “I feel that our team has very good potential, we just haven’t reached it yet,” Harrison said.

Luca De Martino, freshman, jumps above two Sheboygan North defenders to win a header ball. This is his first year on the team and he hopes to play his sophomore, junior, and senior years. “Size doesn’t always mean strength, it is the power of will and determination that shows who’s bigger,” De Martino said.
Win. Charlie Hanson, sophomore, controls the ball and takes it up the sideline against a strong Sheboygan team. This is Hanson’s first year on varsity. “The game we played against Sheboygan North epitomized our season thus far because we kept the score tight all game but, unfortunately, lost in the end due simply to bad luck,” Hanson said.

Get Ready. Nick Plamann, Joe Clemens, and Evan Gruel, juniors, get ready to play defensively as they wait for the ball to be served. “I think that during practice we play with a lot of intensity and try to make the best and smartest plays to be able to become the best,” Plamann said.

20 5 Steps to a Perfect Spike 1. Make sure that you stretch before beginning. 2. Get into your power position. 3. Watch the setter, and once the ball is set in the air, prepare for your jump. 4. Once in the air, use your momentum to slam the ball across the net towards the ground to your opponent’s feet. 5. Follow through, keeping hand and feet on your side of the net.

Sydney Roeper Lada Avrunina Rachel Novak Erin Connolly
27 Sydney Roeper, Booster Magazine editor and designer, who rides the struggle bus frequently, is a girl unlike any other. On any given day, Sydney can be found either at the ice rink, practicing her dirty dangles, or in Room 405, staring at the Booster Mag. However, the one thing that will always put Sydney in the best mood is playing with her one-yearold niece, Lula Belle. She also thoroughly enjoys driving her party bus around the Quon. A “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” marathon and a trip to DSW for those much needed new shoes would round out the perfect day for Sydney.
Rachel Novak is a junior and loves her role on staff as Booster Magazine co-editor. During her time outside of room 405, Rachel enjoys long walks on the beach and planning her imaginary wedding. Just kidding, this isn’t eHarmony. Rachel also likes to play Madden and Fifa with her brothers on Xbox 360, take super long naps (like ridiculously long) and spend all of her paychecks on things that she doesn’t need. In conclusion, Rachel is super smart and talented and not at all irresponsible.
Lada Avrunina is a photographer, Booster Magazine designer, junior, and lover of puns - loving to stop and smell the irony. The daily routine includes giving deserving looks to teachers who mispronounce her name (happens more often than not), tripping over inconceivably trippable surfaces and reading every sappy romance novel that she can get her hands on. She is a manager of the Homestead boys hockey team, is a professional Couch Potato, and is fluent in English, broken Spanish, Russian and Pinterest.
Erin Connolly, meticulous copyeditor and self-diagnosed grammar freak, spends her time in the journalism lab perusing drafts of stories looking for spelling errors whilst yelling at the writers for putting random, commas in the most unfortunate, places. Just kidding. Nobody on staff is that bad at comma placement. And she doesn’t yell outside of the ice rink, which, when there are pucks flying at her clocking in at around a million and four miles per hour, makes perfect sense. When she’s not editing anything or willingly risking her facial structure to save a goal, Erin enjoys traveling, going on mission trips, hanging out with friends and, believe it or not, running cross country.
