highlander news magazine KATYA MIKHAILENKO
IN A DAY’S WORK
lead magazine editor
WHY PUBLICATIONS? Publications is unlike any other elective at Homestead. The class grants one with skills that they can utilize in several different aspects of their life. For example, the design skills I acquired I have used in other classes at school and outside of school for work. Publications provides its students with experience that will allow them to further succeed in life hence my love for the class.
A day’s work requires me to mainly design, write a little and take a couple of photographs. I tend to use InDesign to create my designs for the News Magazine or anything else that is needed. As Lead Editor of the magazine I hold to responsibility to assist and guide new designers on staff. Along with this, I have written several articles for both the website and the magazine. Video and media are another area of what I do in publications. Throughout my time in the class I have created several videos covering different events.
FAVORITE MEMORY
My favorite memory in publications is definitely the days we have food. Whenever bagels are brought in or if someone makes something yummy my day is automatically better.

magazine editor-in-chief
IN A DAY’S WORK
As the editor-in-chief of the Highlander Newsmag, I oversee the design and content of the magazine. I primarily work on Adobe InDesign, but I also use other Adobe programs such as Photoshop and Illustrator. As the EIC, a lot of my day is spent working with the designers, copy editors and photographers to make sure the content of the magazine is the best it can be.
I love publications because it gives me a creative outlet and a place to voice my opinions to a larger platform than just a classroom. Publications has opened many doors for me, and through the class, I have interned for Channel Guide Magazine as a TV blogger and for the Mequon-Thiensville Education Foundation as an email coordinator.
FAVORITE MEMORY I have been part of the publications staff since my freshman year, and I have taken part in a lot of amazing conventions and internships through publications. My all-time-favorite memory is traveling to San Diego for my first national convention.

IN A DAY’S WORK
I serve as a copy editor in this class. As a copy editor, my job is to maintain the professionalism of our output, so I check all works for any grammar, structural or visual errors before they are published.
FAVORITE MEMORY
I don’t have any single particular favorite memory of this class, but I’d have to say that my favorite experience on this staff as a whole would be the entirety of this trimester. With my new job as copy editor, I get to interact with more people, and I also feel more productive than I did before, which makes this year even more fun than all the previous ones.
WHY PUBLICATIONS?
Publications is important because, no matter who you are, where you are or what you plan to do, knowing what’s happening in the world around you is essential. It lets people know what’s happening in the world and why, giving them the knowledge they need to confront daily issues and prepare their lives accordingly
I come up with story ideas, write stories, and try to assign stories to people for the website.
FAVORITE MEMORY
My favorite memory was Spring Journalism Convention in Denver. I had never been to Denver and I thought it was such a cool city. Also, Molly and I got to have lunch with the president of JEA and some other journalists from around the nation and it was really cool to see how our program is one of the only schools without censorship.
WHY PUBLICATIONS?
It’s so much more real than other classes. Rather than taking tests and writing papers, publications offers opportunities for real world experiences.
As a web editor, my job is to always be available to help anyone who needs it. I approve web stories, help copyedit when necessary, and answer any questions our staffers have about working the website.
FAVORITE MEMORY
My favorite memory from this year is when I told Cassie Shaurette not to sit on the chair I just brought because two of the legs were missing but, ignoring me completely, she sat on it anyways. Needless to say, she ended up on the ground.
WHY PUBLICATIONS?
Publications has grown exponentially since I first started on staff three years ago. I love seeing how we continue to improve every year and how dedicated everyone is to achieving excellence.

IN A DAY’S WORK FAVORITE As the sports team editor, every MEMORY monday I meet with my team to decide what sports will be covered and who will be writing the stories. After that, we start to write the stories assigned and set out to interview whoever we need to. It can get stressful at times because the sports team is the team that has the tightest deadlines. We have to be able to write a story in a very short span of time and sometimes that is overlooked by others. Make sure to follow us on social media and check the website often because there are always new stories to read!
My junior year I went to D.C. with the publications staff for a national high school journalism convention. It was such a good experience because I got to enhance my knowledge on all sorts of journalism, and I got to explore the city with some of my good friends and fellow journalists.
WHY PUBLICATIONS? Publications has taught me how to meet deadlines and to collaborate with others. I think everyone should try to take at least one trimester of publications because it has taught me so many life skills. Through my experience on staff, I was able to get an internship at the News Graphic to write about sports. This has been an amazing experience, and it is very rewarding to see my work published in a local paper.

WHY PUBLICATIONS?
My favorite publications memory by far is definitely going to San Diego for a national convention my sophomore year. We collectively learned a lot and had a lot of fun at the same time.
Through publications I have not only improved my people and communication skills but also developed professional skills that I know I will apply throughout the rest of my academic and post-academic careers. Publications provides students with real-world experiences and prepare kids beyond high school. I truly believe everything I have learned through publications will carry me far and present me with opportunities I wouldn’t otherwise have.
