Most likely, in college a teacher will not give the class a pink colored sheet of paper marked in bold letters “CHAPTER 5 STUDY GUIDE.” You will have to create your own compilation of multiple resources to study from, most likely from at least one textbook. This website gives you the 411 on how to take notes from a textbook, instead of a review guide.

Don’t Forget! Information compiled by Maddie Fricker and Erik Skaar. Photos by Maragret Martin

When it comes down to packing for college, certain items may seem obvious to take, while others may not even cross one’s mind. Members of the Class of ‘14 imparted advice on some of the lesser obvious objects one shouldn’t forget to bring. Mitchell Kukla- University of Dayton: “Many of the math classes in college don’t allow you to use graphing calculators, so a scientific calculator would be a great thing to bring for next year.”

Julia Dorf- Indiana University: “Hammer and nails for sure, duct tape, sun screen and disinfectant spray.”

Annie Jorgensen- University of Georgia: “I’d say definitely something to decorate your room and make it homey, two sets of sheets and lots of extension cords. And you don’t need as many clothes or shoes as you think you do.”

Michael Schulz- University of Iowa: “Your favorite pillow.”

Kaelee McIlwraithUniversity of Wisconsin-Madison: “Don’t forget to bring lots of underwear for when you don’t have time or don’t want to do laundry.”

Ian Koch- University of Wisconsin-Madison: “Aspirin”

Brittany Emond- University of Missouri: “Even though it’s not an object, I think it’s extremely important to bring confidence to college. Don’t be nervous to go up to people or make new friends. Everyone is in the same boat as you, so no one will think you’re weird if you spark up conversation out of the blue. Everyone’s trying to make friends!”

Haley Wittchow- Kansas University: “Get lots and lots of command strips! I packed way too much of everything, so pack lighter and pack clothes that you can wear with multiple other items.”

Luke Lebesch- University of Wisconsin-Madison: “Never forget that you are in college to further your education. Don’t get too caught up in all the fun college provides.”

Halee Newby- Marquette University- “Don’t underestimate the importance of organizers (drawers and shoe/closet organizers). Some dorms don’t let you put tacks on the wall so 3m strips rock. As far as decorating goes, I would say invest in tapestries and big posters because they take up a ton of space and make your room look homey without the hassle.”

Sydney Benson- University of Minnesota: Extra earbuds. I can guarantee you’ll lose your first pair, and life without earbuds is a life not worth living. Pop-Tarts and/or granola bars for breakfast. Whether you have an 8 a.m., 9 a.m., 10 a.m.,\ or 11 a.m., you’ll somehow never have time for breakfast. Grab ‘n go, baby.”

Elisabeth BalistreriWashington and Lee University: “A large garbage can for all of the pizza boxes you go through. And caffeine is a godsend.”

Attending University of Miami Ohio: This just relates to finance since that’s the job I want to go into after college. A degree in finance will not lead to only one career after I graduate. I can go into anything from private wealth management to investment banking. The market is always changing and that helps ensure that I will always have something new and interesting to adapt to within my career; I don’t want to do something mundane.

I’ve always been drawn to the logical aspects of math and science, but I also like learning about why people make certain decisions.
