“Leadership means being able to motivate those around you on and off the course. It means being somebody that your teammates look up to and can always go to when they are struggling with something. It means treating each and every teammate with the respect thay deserve.”

Sophie Bradshaw ‘15 Trevor Cho ‘15 “Leadership means that you’re the guy that the whole team can count on to lead the team in the right direction. When things aren’t going smoothly for the team you have to be the guy that keeps everyone focused and makes sure that the team doesn’t lose focus of the ultimate goal.”
Mitchell Sutton ‘15
“Leadership means always making the right decision, even when you think no one is watching. Being a leader means understanding what is best for the group and doing whatever it takes to get that goal accomplished.”
Jared Stieve ‘15 “Leadership means putting your teammates before yourself and always trying to do your best and help people when they are struggling.”

“To me, leadership is an opportunity to help the team as a whole move forward. Acting as a leader is dedicating myself to doing anything and everything necessary to support, ease and motivate my teammates in even the toughest game-time situations.”
“Leadership is such an important component to a team’s success, and I try to lead by example. I give 100 percent during every practice and every game and hope that my effort carries over to my teammates. When I was younger, I had great leaders ahead of me, and they inspired me to be a positive role model for the softball program.”

Rennicke creates baseball legacy

or hitchhiking. Running behind his farm, the interurban trail stretched from Sheboygan to Milwaukee. According to Rennicke, hitchhiking was quicker, as “everyone wanted to pick him up” when he sported his leather jacket.
No one anticipated that this boy would become a hall-of-famer.
Rennicke recalls being chided for being the “farm boy,” but he excelled academically and athletically while attending Shorewood. After receiving numerous athletic awards, he was selected as the recipient of the Badger Boys State Scholarship.
Don Rennicke grew up on a dairy farm in Mequon, Wisc. Each day, he attended the Thoreau School. Rennicke spent first through eighth grade in the two rooms the school had to offer. After finishing grade school, Rennicke attended Shorewood High School. At the time, Mequon did not offer a high school. Thus, its teens were able to choose where they attended high school. Transportation to and from school was a different matter entirely. His two options were taking the interurban trail
In 1948, directly out of high school, Rennicke pitched at a baseball tryout in West Bend, Wisconsin. Out of the approximately 100 dreamers in attendance, he was one of two young men offered professional contracts. A scout from the Brooklyn Dodgers arrived at his home to sign him, but his folks would not allow it due to the fact he was only 17 years old. He stowed away his childhood dream of playing professional ball, packed up and headed to the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Rennicke was the first in his family to attend college, and after graduating, he

and his new wife, Betty, headed to Eugene, Oregon. A year later he received his masters degree from the University of Oregon. Mr. and Mrs. Rennicke returned to Wisconsin, and he was given his first teaching position at South Milwaukee High School, where he taught students and coached football, basketball and baseball. In 1957, after three years of teaching, he transferred to Brown Deer High School as the assistant principal and baseball coach. According to Rennicke, he was fortunate to be hired as the assistant principal at Homestead and coached baseball as well in 1964. His first three years, he coached the JV and varsity teams, and he ran the Mequon Little League over the hot Wisconsin summers for many years. In his 12-year coaching career at Homestead, he won six conference titles and two state titles- one in 1974, where his son, Randy, pitched for him. The boys won the game 16-0 and Randy threw a no-hitter in the state finals against New Holstein. Later, Randy signed
Coach Don Rennicke
with the California Angels. Four years later, his son, Dean, pitched him to another state title. Dean went onto play with the California Dodgers, a minor league organization, for a number of years afterwards. Amongst the cheering and championships, Rennicke has been awarded numerous hall of fame positions. He is a member of the Homestead High School Hall of Fame, Wisconsin Old Time Ballplayers Hall of Fame, Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame and the Land of Lakes Hall of Fame. Furthermore, Randy and Don have been inducted into the Homestead High School Hall of Fame for Athletes. Although Rennicke has retired from coaching Homestead baseball, he is present in every no-hitter thrown, every victory celebrated and every home run hit. The years he has dedicated to baseball can be seen and felt on the field the Highlanders play on: Rennicke Field.
